"Rejecting his cultured upper-class background as a classical pianist, Robert Dupea (Jack Nicholson) opts for a blue-collar existence, working in a California oil field and spending time with his waitress girlfriend, Rayette (Karen Black). But when Robert discovers that his father is gravely ill, he wants to reunite with his estranged family in the state of Washington. He and Rayette take a road trip that brings the two paths of his life to an uncomfortable intersection."
A very good movie. I love how he tells off his family's friend who's being a classist bitch. In chose it on a whim and because it's Jack Nicholson. It was very touching to my heart in a strange way.

‘FOLLIES’ TRIVIA
Sidney Guilaroff, Lucille Ball’s hair dresser, who takes responsibility for her famous ‘golden red’ for this movie, becoming her trademark color.
Although they appear in different segments, this is the only feature film collaboration between “I Love Lucy co-stars" Lucille Ball and William Frawley. Coincidently, Frawley's character in this film shares a striking similarity with his iconic character of Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” In this film he plays a money-hungry curmudgeon of a landlord, much like the show. In the above photo, he appears with director Minnelli and co-star Brice.
The horse ridden by Lucille Ball is the Lone Ranger's Silver!
Lucille Ball was actually fired by Ziegfeld from his road company production of Rio Rita in the 1930s.
In February 1956, Lucy and Desi appeared on “MGM Parade” to promote their MGM film Forever Darling. The show also included footage of Lena Horne singing from Ziegfeld Follies.
Lucy also played a showgirl in pink in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;E19) aired on February 21, 1955. The scene was inspired by Ziegfeld’s legendary stage shows featuring beautiful women wearing elaborate costumes navigating long staircases. To solidify the comparison, Ricky says he is going to a meeting with Mr. Minnelli. Vincente Minnelli was one of the directors of Ziegfeld Follies.
Lucy Ricardo had previously cavorted around in a lampshade in the manner of a Ziegfeld girl in both the unaired pilot and “The Audition” (S1;E6).
Ziegfeld Follies includes a sketch for Red Skelton called “When Television Comes” aka “Guzzler’s Gin” in which a (future) television spokesman gets increasingly sloshed on his product. This sketch was an obvious influence on Lucy’s Vitameatavegamin routine in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30) aired on May 5, 1952.
Ziegfeld Girl Eve Whitney appeared on “I Love Lucy” episode “The Charm School” (ILL S3;E15). She used her own name for the character.
The Telegraph Boy in "A Sweepstakes Ticket" Arthur Walsh - appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined” (ILL S3;E11) as Arthur ‘King Cat’ Walsh. He teaches Lucy how to jitterbug.
The first Judge in the “Pay the Two Dollars” James Crehan also played the Police Detective on “I Love Lucy in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5) first aired on October 31, 1955.
Porky, a voice on the telephone in “Number Please” Peter Lawford, played “Password” against Lucille Ball on September 24, 1964. At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy’s sister, Patricia. On November 26, 1968, Ball was a guest on “The Tonight Show” when Peter Lawford was sitting in for Johnny Carson.
Chorus Boy Bert May appeared as a solo dancer on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Tennessee Ernie Ford” (TLS S5;E21) in February 1967.
In the dressing room, Lucy jokes with Fanny Brice, one of the funniest women in showbusiness. This was the only time Ball and Brice collaborated and was Brice’s last film.
Ziegfeld’s follies began on Broadway, so it was appropriate that the show featured past and future Broadway musical stars:
Lucille Ball ~ Wildcat (1960)
Carol Haney ~ The Pajama Game (1954)
Tommy Rall ~ Call Me Madame (1950)
Fanny Brice ~ The Ziegfeld Follies
Marion Bell ~ Brigadoon (1947)
Victor Moore ~ Anything Goes (1934)
There was a lot of material that was not filmed, but written and cast. Some of the original skits would have added “Lucy” performers Mickey Rooney, Ann Sothern, and Van Johnson to the cast.

Another World - Final Scene (1999)
It was 21 years ago today, on Friday June 25,1999 that Another World aired its final episode after 35 years on NBC. The soap, produced by Procter & Gamble fell due to low ratings, and to make room for the NBC soap Passions (think Bewitched as a Daytime Soap), which lasted eight years on NBC. Another World was the first soap to expand to 60 minutes (which it did in January 1975), and one of only two 90-minute soaps (which it was from 1979 to 1980). The soap had TWO Spin-Offs - Somerset (from 1970-1976) and Texas (from 1980-1982), and launched the careers of the likes of Morgan Freeman, Howard Rollins, Anne Heche, Luke Perry, and more. The soap won a handful of Daytime Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series (only in 1976), Lead Actor (Douglass Watson in 1980 & 1981; Charles Keating in 1996), and Lead Actress (Laurie Heinemann in 1978, Irene Dailey in 1979, and Linda Dano in 1993).
After Another World was cancelled, several characters moved over to Oakdale on As the World Turns, as well as the final AW showrunner, Christopher Goutman, who would be the showrunner for ATWT for 11 years, until ATWT was canceled in 2010 to make way for The Talk. ATWT moved over from the CBS Broadcast Center to AW’s set in Brooklyn for 10 years, only to move back to the CBS Broadcast Center in 2009 after Guiding Light was canceled.
The crowning point of the finale was a gorilla hijacking Cass and Lila's wedding with James Brown's 1976 hit "Get Up Offa That Thing". The final scene was with Rachel (Emmy-nominated Victoria Wyndham) and Carl (the late Emmy-Winner Charles Keating).

September 12 - Irene Dailey
Happy Broadway Birthday to Irene Dailey!
Irene Dailey was born in New York City in 1920. Her older brother Dan also became a performer. From the age of 8 she appeared in vaudeville. She also did stock and regional theatre. Eventually she studied acting with Uta Hagen, later teaching at HB Studios before opening her own acting school in New York. She made her Broadway debut in early 1943 with “Nine Girls,” one of which was Barbara Bel Geddes. “Nine Girls” lasted just 5 performances. Three years later “Truckline Cafe” closed after just 13 sittings, despite starring Marlon Brando and Karl Malden and being staged by Harold Clurman. “Springtime Folly” was just that – closing after just two showings in 1951. Dailey was in yet another brief run with a City Center revival of “Idiot's Delight” that same year. “The Good Woman of Setzuan” did slightly better with 24 performances at the Phoenix Theatre in late 1956. Hagen played the leading role. Less than a year later she joined Henderson Forsythe [see yesterday's Birthday Blog] in “Miss Lonelyhearts” at the Music Box. After this twelve-performance disappointment, Dailey decided to give TV a try, making her small screen debut on an episode of “Decoy” in 1958. She continued to do episodic television and soaps until landing the role of Aunt Liz on “Another World” in 1980, a role she played on and off until 1992. Back on Broadway in 1963 she continued her short runs with “Andorra” (9 performances) at the Biltmore. She finally broke through with a clear stage hit in “The Subject Was Roses,” a three character drama also starring Martin Sheen and Jack Albertson. It was named Best Play of 1965 and played 832 performances at five different Broadway venues. Dailey stayed with the show for more than a year. She served as a replacement performer in “You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running,” an evening of four plays that lasted more than 750 performances. It was more than two decades before Dailey returned to the Great White Way, as Grandma Kurnitz in Neil Simon's 1991 memory play “Lost in Yonkers.” Her final role on Broadway was in Roundabout's 1996 revival of Strindberg's “The Father” with Frank Langella in the title role. Her film roles were few, but included “Five Easy Pieces” (1970) and “The Amityville Horror” (1979). She won a 1979 Daytime Emmy for her role on “Another World” and was also the recipient of a Sarah Siddons Award and a Drama Desk Award. She died of colon cancer at the age of 88. She never married and had no children.
