私は携帯ポンプを沢山持っています。

今までに買った本数は20本以上。現在、家にあるだけでも15本はあります。別にコレクションしているわけではないのですが、ロングライド使用時に最適なポンプを探すうちに、自然と数が集まってしまいました。

メーカーが鎬を削るフレームや、LED・電池の進化と共に急速に明るく長持ちになっているライトのような急速な進化はありませんが、携帯ポンプも緩やかに進化を続けていると思っています。

この記事では、ロードバイク向け携帯ポンプの未来を考えてみようと思います。

なお、私が自転車趣味を始めたのは2008年なので、それ以前の話は書籍・ネット記事の調査に基づくものです。誤りがあればご指摘をお願いします。

携帯ポンプの時代考証に関しては、八重洲出版発行のサイクルパーツカタログの1987年版と2002年版を参考にしました。 ■《スチールフレーム時代の携帯ポンプ》

未来を考えるには、まずは過去から。

スチールフレームの時代には、フレームに直接取り付ける「フレームポンプ」が一般的でした。下記ブログで取り上げられているようなポンプです。

JISで定められているフレームポンプは、携帯ポンプ全てを包含する言葉なのですが、ここでは「トップチューブまたはシートチューブに突っ張って持ち運ぶタイプの携帯ポンプ」を指すこととします。

1987年のサイクルパーツカタログを見ると、1本を除いて全てがフレームポンプでした。ブリヂストンだけが、フロントバッグ用の携帯ポンプを出していたようです。

◆《フレームポンプの特徴》

��はフレームポンプって、携帯ポンプとしては理に適った作りだと思っています。少ないポンピング回数で指定空気圧まで入れられ、高圧にも強い構造だからです。

基本的に、携帯ポンプの性能(一回のポンピングで何cc入るか)は、長さに比例します。長く太い携帯ポンプほど、ポンプ内部の容積が大きくなり、一回のポンピングで入る空気の量は大きくなります。当たり前のことですね。トップチューブの長さは50cm前後ありますから、ポンプの長さは45cm前後になります。これはよくある携帯ポンプの倍以上の長さです。

ただ、太い携帯ポンプはロードバイクには向きません。ロードバイクのタイヤが高圧運用を前提としているからです。

高圧運用の場合は、細い方が有利となります。気になる人は「パスカルの原理」を検索してみてください。最近流行りの油圧ブレーキもこの仕組みを応用しています。

つまり、「長くて細い」フレームポンプは、高圧で細いタイヤ(エアボリュームが少ない)を使うロードバイクには理想的であると言えます。

一方で、短所ももちろんあります。ずばり、重いことだと思います。

サイズが大きいので、どうしても重量がかさみます。現在売っているアルミ製のものでも250～300g程度の重量があります。現在の携帯ポンプは100-150gがボリュームゾーンなので、倍近くの重さがありますね。

やはりロード乗りは軽量化が大好きなので、出番の少ない携帯ポンプは真っ先にリストラを要求される部分です。

◆《消えたフレームポンプ》

現在でもフレームポンプを作っているメーカーはあります(TOPEAK、Zefalなど)。しかし、街で見かける機会は多くありません。

先の重量も原因の一つだとは思いますが、アルミ・カーボンフレーム時代の到来によって、取り付けにくくなったのが主要因かな、と私は考えています。

フレームポンプは端がパイプ形状にフィットするように作られています。スチールフレームのパイプは太さが規格化されており、ほぼ同一です(大体1インチか1-1/8インチ)。しかし、アルミ・カーボンフレームのパイプ径はバラバラな上に、真円ではありません。扁平なものもありますからね。フィットしないわけです。スローピングフレームが増えたことも要因かもしれません。

2002年のサイクルパーツカタログを見ると、1987年とは逆にフレームポンプはほとんど残っていません。今でも残っているTOPEAK、Zefalに加えてBLACKBURNが作っているのみでした。ほぼ全てが、フレームに付けないタイプの携帯ポンプに切り替わっています。

■《アルミ・カーボンフレーム時代の携帯ポンプ》

2000年代に入り、ロードバイクのフレームはアルミ製・カーボン製が当たり前��なりました。

フレームポンプは廃れ、ボトルケージ台座に共締めするブラケットや、バックポケットに入れて携帯するケースが増えたように思います。

◆《2000年代前半》

過去の文献をあさってみると、2000年代前半はTOPEAKのこちらのポンプのような、持ち手がハンドルになるタイプのものが主流だったようです。上記のポンプは「DX2」という後継モデルですが、「DX」は2002年のカタログには既に記載されています。

また、フロアポンプを小さくしたような、いわゆるミニフロアポンプもこの頃からあります。現在でも根強い人気を誇るタイプですね。こちらのロードモーフは2002年には既に存在しており、約20年間に渡ってラインナップされているロングセラー製品です。

重量的には、200g前後が主流だったようです。

◆《2000年代後半》

携帯電話がどんどん小さくなっていった2000年代後半、携帯ポンプも小型化・軽量化が進みます。

代表的なのは、「airbone ミニポンプ」でしょう。99mm・58gという極めて小さいサイズで、ツール缶や小さなサドルバッグにも入ります。性能はそこまで高くありませんが、回数さえこなせれば確実に空気圧を増やせることから人気を博しました。airbone本国サイトを見ると、発売は2007年のようです。 {{ シルベストサイクルのブログ : http://clubsilbest.blog61.fc2.com/blog-entry-1432.html : https://archive.ph/I1yWd }} にも紹介がありますね。

携帯ポンプ界の覇者たるTOPEAKも、次々に小さい携帯ポンプをリリース。2006年には現在も販売されている人気商品「マイクロロケット」シリーズがリリースされました。私が最初に買ったのもこれでした。

2009年には、軽量ブームの一つの到達点たる携帯ポンプ「バルビエリナノ」がリリースされます。重量なんと35g。カーボンを贅沢に使った超軽量仕様でした。長さも155mmとコンパクトでしたが、性能はお察しだったようです。

重量的には、100-150gが主流となり、現在の水準に近くなりました。

◆《2010年代前半》

2010年代の前半は特にコレと言った携帯ポンプ界隈の動きは無かったように記憶しています。

一つ書いておくとすれば、クラウドファンディングから誕生した超軽量ポンプ「iPump」でしょうか。日本に住むモリス・オストロウという人がkickstarterで5万ドル以上を集めたことでも有名ですが、 {{ 既に2012年にはサイスポで紹介されていました : https://old.cyclesports.jp/depot/detail/40643 : https://archive.ph/8mahd }} (この段階では試作だったようです)。

特徴は何といってもその軽さで、なんと19g(現在は改良されて21g)。先に紹介した「バルビエリナノ」の更に半分近い重量です。恐らく2020年現在でも世界最軽量の携帯ポンプだと思われます。

◆《2010年代後半》

2010年代後半もしばらくは大きな変化が見えませんでしたが、2018年に一つの転機が訪れます。「例のポンプ」の登場です。

例のポンプとは、このポンプのことです。このポンプの製造元は「PRO STAR」という中国のメーカーで、さまざまなブランドのOEM生産を手掛けています。色々なブランドで販売されているため特定のブランドで呼びようがなく、「例のポンプ」と呼ばれるようになりました。

例のポンプがエポックメイキングだったのは、内部で加圧するデュアルチャンバー方式を取っていたことです。詳しくは上記レビューで構造を解説していますが、簡単に言えば「内部に2本のポンプがマトリョーシカのように入っている」構造です。このため、見た目は結構太さがあるのですが、高圧状態(5気圧以上)でも楽に空気が入ります。

実はこの機構自体はそこまで目新しいものではなく、過去に採用していたメーカーもあります。ただ、「例のポンプ」は筒の太さと長さを最適化し、「ポンピング回数の少なさ」と「高圧での押しの軽さ」を両立する設計になっていました。

スペック上、ほとんどの携帯ポンプは5気圧以上入ることになっていますが、実際に5気圧以上入れられるポンプってかなり少ないんですよね。5気圧を超えても女性の力で加圧出来る押しの軽さは衝撃的でした。

2010年代後半のもう一つの大きなトピックは、「タイヤとリムのワイド化」です。

それまでは23Cタイヤが主流でしたが、「太いタイヤの方が転がり抵抗が低い」「エアボリュームが大きいので乗り心地が良い」ということで、あっという間に25Cタイヤが広まりました。更に、「リムが太い方がエアロ」「安定性も高まる」という理由で、リムも太くなりました。

そうなると困るのがパンク時です。「エアボリュームが大きい」と言う事は取りも直さず、「入れなければならない空気量が多い」と言う事です。

タイヤが23Cから25Cになると、エアボリュームは1.2～1.3倍になります。つまり、同じ携帯ポンプを使う場合、ある空気圧に達するまで��ポンピング回数は1.2～1.3倍になります(★)。これまで23Cのタイヤに7気圧入れるのに300回のポンピングで済んでいたのに、25Cタイヤになると360～390回ポンピングする必要があります。出先でのパンク修理の時間は確実に伸びます。

★ 容積から行くと1.2～1.3倍になるはずなのですが、実際に空気を入れてみると25Cのポンピング回数は1.4～1.5倍になります。理由は不明。

もっとも、タイヤが太くなると空気圧を下げる人がほとんどなので、実際にはここまで回数は増えません。それでも、ポンピング回数自体は23C時代より確実に増えます。

■《ディスクロード時代の携帯ポンプ》

さて、ここからは未来の話です。

2020年のツアーダウンアンダー、半分以上のプロチームがディスクロードを選択しました。これからはディスクロードの時代になっていくと思われるので、その視点で携帯ポンプの未来を考えてみます。

◆《さらなる太タイヤ化》

ディスクブレーキ化することで得られる最大の恩恵は制動性が上がることですが、もう一つ、タイヤの太さの制限が大幅に緩和されるということが挙げられます。

これまで存在していたリムブレーキのキャリパーが無くなることで、ロードバイクでもシクロクロス並みの太さのタイヤを履くことが可能になりました。しばらく25Cが普通だったロード界隈ですが、近い将来には28Cが普通になるだろうと言われています。

……となると、当然エアボリュームが増えます。もうお分かりかと思いますが、携帯ポンプでのポンピング回数は25C時代の更に1.2～1.3倍、23Cから比べると1.4～1.7倍の回数が必要になるわけです。当然、その分の進化がポンプ側に必要になると思っています。

◆《電動携帯ポンプ》

ここからは私の想像ですが、今後は「電動携帯ポンプ」の時代が来るのではないかと思っています。「例のポンプ」を見つけてきたチャリモさんも似たようなことを言ってました。

どんどん太くなってエアボリュームが増えるタイヤに人力で空気を入れるのは、もはや難しくなってくるはず。となると、電気の力を使うことになるのではないかな？と。

2010年代後半から電動携帯ポンプは出てきましたが、初登場時は重量500g程度と、スチールロード時代のフレームポンプより重いものでした。ただ、徐々に小型化が進んでいます。

現状、世界最小で最軽量と思われるのが、「Mini Fumpa」です。重量は190g。シクロワイヤードの計測によれば、26Cタイヤに50秒で7気圧まで充填出来たと言う事で、十分な性能を持っています。

ただ、バッテリーの容量があまり大きくないためか、使用できるのはロード用タイヤで2回までという制限が付きます。パンクって割と連続して起こるものなので、2回制限はちょっと心もとないですね。

サイズもまだまだ大きく、ツール缶に入るサイズにはなっていません。エアーコンプレッサーの機構を考えると、細長い形状にするのは難しいのかもしれませんが。

そして値段。定価は25000円ほどと、普通の携帯ポンプが10本前後買えてしまいます。さすがに買うには至っていません。

◆《こんな携帯ポンプが欲しい》

具体的に今後出てきて欲しいと思うのは、

「モバイルバッテリーからの給電で動作する電動携帯ポンプ」

です。今時、スマホ用にモバイルバッテリーは普通に持ち歩いていますし、大容量なモバイルバッテリーを使えば空気を入れる回数制限も緩和されるはずです。ポンプ本体からバッテリーを省けば、小型化も可能でしょう。

これに近いものは既にAliexpressでは販売されています。「モバイルバッテリーと別体」ではなく「モバイルバッテリーとしても使うことが出来る」電動携帯ポンプですが。例によって、新しい携帯ポンプをすぐに見つけてくるチャリモさんが購入して試していました。サイズは大きいですが、実用に足る性能は持っているようです(23Cタイヤに6.9気圧で14回充填可能)。
