LG Wing 5G Review

The wildest phone of late 2020, the LG Wing ($999) has a unique swiveling screen that brings a breath of fresh, creative air to the stale world of rectangular smartphones. Its T-shaped two-screen layout makes it the ultimate phone for multitaskers who like to take notes while in Zoom meetings or access both music and maps while driving. It also has a Gimbal video mode that simulates a Steadicam attachment. I wish this innovative device were a slam dunk, but the phone is extremely heavy, and underpowered for the price. The promise of using two screens at once also falls a little flat when you realize that third-party apps likely won't take advantage of the new design.

Perfect to a 'T'?

The LG Wing looks like a big, thick, but ordinary smartphone. At 6.67 by 2.93 by 0.43 inches (HWD), it's roughly the same width and height as other large flagships, and thicker by about 0.1 inch. But whoof, it weighs 9.17 ounces. I called the 8-ounce iPhone 12 Pro Max too heavy, so this one is a brick—though there's a reason for that. Push the bottom of the screen up and clockwise, and boom! The phone is in a "T" shape, with the large screen above in landscape orientation and a smaller screen below.

The main screen is a 6.8-inch, 2,460-by-1,080 AMOLED at 395ppi. The smaller one is a nearly-square, 3.9-inch, 1,240-by-1,080 OLED display at 419ppi. Unlike with folding phones, the two screens aren't designed to be used as one fluid display: They're a primary and a secondary panel. On the glossy back of the lower screen, there's a triple-camera stack. To use those cameras, you hold the phone up as if it were a cross to ward off vampires.

Once you get past the coolness, you'll notice some flaws. The color balance isn't very saturated, especially in comparison to Samsung phones, which really punch up the colors. There's a single, loud, aggressively tinny speaker on the bottom; USB-C or Bluetooth headphones are a must. (There's no 3.5mm headphone jack.)

The hinge moves smoothly, and LG says that it's rated for at least 200,000 rotations. It doesn't hold at any location other than zero and 90 degrees; once you push it, it's going to swivel automatically on a spring until it snaps into place.

Shockingly for something this oddly shaped, the phone has an IP54 rating for water resistance. The internal components have a spray-on waterproof coating; how long it will hold up with the parts constantly moving is hard to say.

Performance That Doesn't Really Take Flight

The Wing's Qualcomm 765G chipset benchmarks below where I'd expect. I didn't see any problems in video calling, web browsing, or movie watching, even while multitasking on two screens, but high-performance games that aren't optimized for the device may have issues. The included game, Asphalt 9: Legends, was fine; it's designed for the phone. In the extremely high-test but popular open-world adventure game Genshin Impact, occasional stutters somewhat marred the gameplay experience.

The Wing scores 7,946 on PCMark Work 2.0; 596 single-core, 1,858 multi-core on Geekbench; 318 on Basemark Web; and 17fps on-screen, 21fps off-screen with the GFXBench Car Chase graphics benchmark. By comparison, the $699 Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G scores 12,705 on PCMark Work 2.0, 392 on Basemark Web, and 45fps and 52fps on the GFXBench tests. It's clear that the Wing is operating at sub-flagship performance levels. Its scores are closer to those of the LG Velvet and the OnePlus Nord N10, two midrange phones that cost at least $300 less than the Wing's premium price.

The Wing does have flagship levels of RAM, though, and that's important. The 8GB of RAM is needed to keep all of that multitasking running.

How We Test Phones

The giant 4,000mAh battery runs out of juice surprisingly quickly. With the main screen in portrait orientation and the smaller screen hidden, the Wing streamed video over Wi-Fi for 9 hours, 15 minutes before conking out. Any recent large-size Samsung or Apple phone will surpass that by two hours or more.

The Wing has wireless charging and Qualcomm QuickCharge 4, allowing for fast charging using USB-C PD adapters at up to 28W.

Middling Connectivity

LG does not sell an unlocked, all-carrier Wing. There are two different hardware models: a Verizon/AT&T version and a T-Mobile version. I tested a Verizon model.

You shouldn't expect to see 2Gbps speeds on the Wing; 800Mbps will be more like it. The Wing uses a Qualcomm X52 modem, which we've previously seen run into trouble with AT&T's network (see our LG Velvet review). The X52 doesn't have a problem with Verizon 4G, but where flagship X55 phones will see peak speeds on Verizon's the 5G network, phones with the X52 modem will only use half of Verizon's millimeter-wave spectrum and see slower speeds. (To be fair, that difference will only show up in near-ideal circumstances in a limited number of cities.)

The T-Mobile version of the Wing can presumably handle T-Mobile's mid-band 4G as well as any other phone on the market. However, my Verizon-locked phone can't connect to T-Mobile's network, so I couldn't test its performance there.

5GHz Wi-Fi reception was about on par with the iPhone 12 Pro and behind the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Using an attenuated signal from a 100Mbps source connection, I saw around 8Mbps on both the LG Wing and the 12 Pro, and 35–40Mbps on the Note 20 Ultra. The iPhone 12 mini, on the other hand, frequently dropped that attenuated connection.

Software as Unusual as Its Hardware

The Wing runs Android 10, which is a year old at this point. It will get an upgrade to Android 11, but LG is notoriously slow to provide OS updates, so you'll have to wait for your carrier to push it. Upgrades beyond Android 11 are unlikely.

The Wing's software has been thoroughly customized to take advantage of its unusual form factor. When you swivel the top screen open, it switches from displaying the Android home interface to offering a carousel of dual screen–friendly apps: Asphalt 9, the gallery, the camera, YouTube, and Maps. There's no immediately obvious way to look at any other app on the main screen while it's horizontal. However, if you open an app while the screen is in portrait orientation and then rotate the screen, the app will stay open (sometimes adjusting well to the change of orientation, sometimes ending up displayed sideways).

Once revealed, the bottom screen displays a small version of the Android home screen. Among the icons at the bottom of the small screen, you now have pairs of apps that will open together, such as YouTube and Chrome, or Google Maps and YouTube Music.

Most of the time, the two screens operate independently. This comes in handy. My most frequent use was to pop open LG's QuickNote or Microsoft's OneNote on the bottom screen and jot notes while reading a web page or watching a video on the top screen. The Music-Maps combination looks great for driving, but there's one big UI failure: no Skip Ad button on the small screen, leaving you to endure long ads instead of your favorite playlist. A texting-and-Maps combination isn't bad if you're lost (but please pull over before texting).

You can also read two web pages at once. That's convenient, but the top page is in Landscape mode and the bottom one is small. They're certainly readable, but it isn't as natural an experience as, say, two side-by-side, portrait-style pages on the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

The Ecosystem Pitfall

The Wing's ambitious form factor looks destined to fall to the ecosystem pitfall that a lot of innovative phones have run into over the past several years.

There are four companies with enough market share to drive third-party app and accessory development. They are Apple, Google, and, to a lesser extent, Huawei and Samsung. Even Samsung hasn't done that well at it; the only success I can think of is Samsung making sure creative apps are compatible with its S Pen. Unfortunately for everyone, attempts to promote innovative APIs by other OEMs have universally failed. We saw this with the dual-screen Kyocera Echo and ZTE Axon M, and with Asus's convertible phone-tablets.

LG's dual-screen case for the V60 and the most recent round of foldable phones work around this problem by working with standard Android apps. But the Wing has two screens, with different sizes and aspect ratios, that aren't next to each other and don't form a single rectangle together, and third-party developers don't plan for that.

The result: I don't think we're going to see many games that use the second screen, or third-party camera apps that build on LG's innovative control scheme. LG has announced a few software partners—Rave, Tubi, Ficto, and Naver (which is big in Korea)—but they aren't companies well-known in the US.

Cameras: a Gimbal Gambol

The LG Wing has a main 64-megapixel camera on the back that defaults to taking 16-megapixel photos by combining every four small pixels into one brighter one. The camera has a "2x zoom" option, but it's digital zoom; it just crops the middle out of a 64-megapixel image. I found those resulting zoom shots to look quite good. They didn't seem dimmer than shots taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and they were plenty sharp. There's also a 13-megapixel, 117-degree wide-angle camera on the back, and a 32-megapixel pop-up selfie camera on the front.

Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the LG's sharpening is more aggressive, but I like that. Photos taken with this camera really brought out the texture of bricks and the stubble on my face. The Wing's primary camera is flagship level, no question about it. You may like it more or less than other flagship cameras, but I think that comes out to a matter of taste.

In low light, it's hard to compare the LG and the Samsung because they make consistently different exposure decisions. In my tests, the LG always went for a longer exposure: 1/10 when the Samsung chose 1/20, or 1/30 when the Samsung chose 1/60. That results in more detailed images, but with a greater risk of blur if you don't hold the camera still. (I noticed this when whipping out both phones to take a quick snapshot indoors. The LG was blurry at 1/24, while the Samsung was sharper at 1/40.) The LG may have been using a longer exposure because the sensor isn't as sensitive as the Samsung's. Photos taken on the Samsung have more saturated colors in low light; the LG's images look a touch washed out.

I ran into one irritating problem: In low light, when taking photos of objects at short distances, there were sometimes problems with focus lock, resulting in blurry images. This tends to happen on high-megapixel phones that don't have some sort of focus assist light, and it can be frustrating. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a focus assist sensor, so it does better in those situations.

The Wing's Portrait mode is particularly fun and notable because of its filters. Sure, it can do the usual background blur and "stage lighting" where it blanks out the background. But it can also turn the background into a cartoon or an outline, making for a great effect I haven't seen on other phones.

A neat Dual Recording video mode lets you capture videos with the front and rear cameras at the same time—great for YouTubers. The videos can be saved as two files or one. A whole bunch of phones a few years ago had this feature, but it's been less common in the past two years.

The Wing's Gimbal mode, which imitates a Steadicam, appears to be magic, and it is—of the sleight-of-hand variety. The Gimbal mode relies on a 12-megapixel, 120-degree ultra-wide-angle camera that's rotated 90 degrees relative to the other cameras on the phone. I've seen this trick once before, on the Moto One Action, which used a rotated camera to let you take horizontal videos while holding the phone vertically.

In Gimbal mode, the phone captures up to 1080P video—that's 2.1 megapixels. Think of the 12-megapixel sensor as divided into six 2-megapixel rectangles, and your field of vision as a moving 2.1-megapixel window onto that larger panorama. With a real gimbal, you're moving your camera around. With this, you're just moving a virtual window onto an extremely wide-angle fixed field of view.

There are a bunch of options to play with in the Gimbal mode. You can lock the view so that when you move the phone around, the frame stays still. You can let the frame move, but only on the horizontal axis, preventing vertical shake when you're walking. You can pan with a joystick rather than by moving the phone. (You can't zoom, because you're already using all the pixels.)

The best thing about the Gimbal mode is the panning and what that does to your mind. Typically, when I shoot a video with my phone, I try to keep the frame still because moving the phone around with my hand introduces some wobble and a kind of motion that can be distracting. But the digital panning on the Wing's Gimbal mode is perfectly smooth and feels very professional. That's really nice.

There are a few downsides to this. For one thing, you can't combine pixels to detect more light. On the main camera, the default mode is to combine four 0.8-micron pixels into 1.6-micron pixels for 12-megapixel images; with 1080p video, you can do further pixel combination because you only really need 2.1 megapixels at one time. The gimbal camera says it has 1.4-micron "big pixels," but since it can't ever combine them, images are dimmer and basically useless at night.

Also, at least some of the anti-shake is digital, and you can see it in the resulting video. The gimbal camera has a hexa motion stabilizer to physically reduce shake, but of course it's not going to be as smooth as if you had a real gimbal. When I created intense shaking by skipping along the street while I took video, I could see some distracting digital tearing in the image as the algorithms tried to keep it together.

Will the Wing Be a Thing?

The Wing is a genuinely innovative product. Its Gimbal mode can enable some great filmmaking. Its two screens let you pair passive activities (streaming videos, watching webinars) with active ones (researching on IMDB, taking notes) for a rich, engaged experience.

On the other hand, it's really heavy, performance isn't what I expect from a $1,000 phone, and, most importantly, I don't have faith in LG to further develop and expand the software ecosystem for the form factor. The phone's basic app experience isn't likely to improve or expand with time.

Gimbal mode is cool, but real gimbals aren't that expensive. A DJI Osmo Mobile 3 or Om 4 gimbal costs $80–130. Pair that gimbal with a $699 iPhone 12 mini or Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, and you have better overall phone performance at a lower price than the $999 Wing. Of course, having to tote an extra gimbal around isn't quite as convenient, which is part of the point of the Wing.

There's an old lyric from the British rapper The Streets that always comes into my head for phones like this: "Cult classic, not best seller." When you're out with friends and you flip open an LG Wing, you're going to get comments and stares. You'll be a cool weirdo. Then you can pan around the table with your Gimbal mode, capturing reactions. If that's your game, it'll be a fun one.

Agilenano - News: Fiio m5 portable high-resolution music player review

Music player provides retro music-playing experience that may not be worth the cost. Born in the early 1980s, I was lucky to experience the transition from cassette tape, through compact disc, through standalone MP3/MP4 players through various generations of iPhones. Our ability to listen to portable music has certainly expanded since the advent of the Sony Walkman in 1979. As smartphone tech has expanded, many of the features of standalone devices have become integrated into them. Now we can use our phones to navigate via maps/GPS, to watch movies/TV, to read magazines/books, to compose messages/articles/papers, to draw, and so much more. Streaming services and digital sources have reduced the need to purchase hard copies of music. It has become quite convenient to pay a monthly subscription instead of paying for music or larger hard drives/storage options. With an iPad/iPhone/Apple Watch/iPod Touch, you can still choose to purchase music, download what you want from the cloud, and then delete it without the need to ever hook your device up to a computer. I have not missed searching through a stack of SD cards to find the desired file, messing with a card reader, or the need to manage libraries/files on my computer. Other than for my Nintendo Switch and DSLR camera, I really have no need for SD cards. I received the FiiO M5 Portable High-Resolution Music Player for review and questioned the relevance of the device in the era of the smartphone. I would not consider myself an audiophile but I have tested several players and headphones. I wanted to give it a fair chance, based on its own merit but struggled to understand the cost to value. The M5 Portable Music Player arrived in an attractive 3 5/8 inches wide by 5 15/16 inches tall by 1 inch thick hanging retail package. The clean white packaging served as the perfect backdrop for the colorful square image of the music player, which reminded me a bit of my Apple Watch. The FiiO company name, in bold black font, was listed along the top left of the cover and you will find two square icons denoting Hi-Res Audio (Wireless) to the right of the FiiO name. Along the lower section of the cover panel, you will find the “M5 Portable High-Resolution Music Player” name and four icons: Qualcomm aptXHD, Qualcomm aptX, Bluetooth, and LDAC. With the cover facing up, the side panel to my left displayed “FiiO” in silver/grey font and the opposite side had M5 in the same silver/grey font. The top panel housed the semi-opaque hanging tab and the bottom panel was left blank. The rear panel provided several of the product manufacturing labels and copyright/legalese information. To access the product, I removed the thin outer plastic, gripped the hanging tab, and pulled upward. The inner box smoothly slid out of the surrounding slipcover. Within the outer layer of the box, you will find two smaller boxes. Along the top, you will find a 3 7/16 inches wide by 3 1/8 inches tall by 9/16 inches thick foam block with included M5 player. Along the bottom, you will find a 3 7/16 inches wide by 2 5/8 inches tall by 7/8 inches thick accessory box with a 32 1/2 inches long USB-A to USB-C cable and a clear plastic belt-clip case. Beneath the foam layer with M5 player, you will find a 3 7/16 inches wide by 3 inches tall by 1/2 inches thick box with an included screen protector, multilingual Bluetooth instruction manual, and a warranty disclaimer booklet (1-month guarantee for replacement, 1 year of free maintenance, no warranty for the accessories). Lastly, you will find a multi-lingual quick start guide, with three pages for each language. I turned to the English language section and found a useful labeled diagram of the 1 5/8 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches tall by 9/16 inches thick music player. The 36-gram device had a 1 1/8 inches square touch screen on the front panel, a 3.5mm port, volume down/up buttons, dual microphones, and power/lock buttons along the top panel. On the bottom panel, you will find the USB-C port and the Micro SD card slot (not included). To activate the device, hold the power button, and enjoy a brilliant touchscreen image displaying “FiiO Born to Music.” After a few seconds, the player will display a large pink triangle with the words “Now Playing” beneath it. You can change screens by swiping to the right or to the left. As you swipe from left to right, you will scroll through several screens: Category, Step Counter, Recording, Settings, BT Receiver, and Browse Files. My favorite feature of the M5 Portable player was the BT Receiver mode. Once the device was powered on, I swiped left to right several times until the BT Receiver icon was present on the screen. I tapped the Bluetooth symbol to “Enable Bluetooth” and subsequently navigated to Settings, selected Bluetooth, and then FiiO M5 from the list on my iPhone 11 Pro Max. This feature allowed the M5 player to pair with my iPhone, similar to other Bluetooth headsets. Thanks to the included 3.5mm port, you can plug your favorite pair of wired headphones into the M5 player to enjoy a pseudo-Bluetooth listening experience. Since the device does not have embedded speakers, you will need to provide your own at added cost to the virus. I paired my RHA IEM earphones with the M5 and listened to many of my standard headphone test tracks and a few new 8D options through Spotify and Amazon Music Unlimited. I also used a pair of 1More wired IEM earphones as well. I added the M5 device securely within the clear belt clip and listened for several hours. The 550mAh LiPo battery lasted approximately 10 hours and charged in about two and a half hours. I was pleased with the sound, with the portability and with the ability to remain handsfree from my iPhone. The volume up/down buttons quickly changed the volume of the headphones and I was able to play/pause music with the button on the top. Unfortunately, the RCA headphones lost the function of the inline button control. Despite the M5 feature, I already own several 3.5mm to Lightning and 3.5mm to USB-C dongles (iPad Pro). It was for that reason that I found the $99.99 price tag hard to swallow. If you want to add your corded earphone/headphones to your smartphone, simply purchase a headphone dongle for $9. While testing the device, I repeatedly found myself trying to find a feature/function that my iPhone 11Pro Max could not do for me. I liked being able to carry the lighter weight M5 while jogging/riding my bike. I could have my iPhone 11 Pro Max in the saddlebag of my Trek Mountain Bike but I could have placed the FiiO M5 on my lapel for music. Again, I found it difficult to beat a pair of Bluetooth headphones. Throughout the testing, I could not stop thinking about the laughing Apple Dongle video and that I might have the most expensive iPhone Dongle that currently exists. Since nearly everyone has a smartphone, I did not compare the price of the M5 to the purchase price of an iPhone. The M5 paired well with my iPhone and remained connected throughout my tests. In addition to the Bluetooth receiver test, the M5 had the ability to act as a Bluetooth Transmitter through SBC, aptX, and LDAC formats. I paired it with a Tribit XSound Go speaker and was pleased with the sound output. To test this, I played the sample track that came with the player. I also paired the M5 Player with a pair of Tranya Bluetooth Speakers. The downside to the music player was the need to have onboard music. As an added benefit, the M5 player had a built-in pedometer, and dual microphones along the top to capture high-quality audio (need a memory card). Again, my iPhone can capture audio and I do not also need to purchase/format a microSD card (up to 2TB). The website states that there are several accessories for the M5 to include a clear belt clip and a watch accessory. The CNC machined aluminum alloy M5 is available in Meteorite Black, Radiant Red, Starry Blue, Dreamy Silver, and Moonlight Titanium. You can wear the device with the included clear belt clip, or you can purchase the watch accessory from the website. At first, the user interface was pretty easy to navigate and the functions of the device were not difficult to learn. However, after several days of using the device, I found myself struggling with the clunky touchscreen. It did not want to respond to my finger swipes and this problem was exacerbated by the included screen protector. I was disappointed that they did not include even a small micro SD card with the kit. Personally, I find it time-consuming to try to add music to a memory card to then insert it into the device for a portable player. The thought of doing that brought up several memories of Napster and my college days of MP3 and data files. With modern streaming services like Spotify, Amazon Unlimited, and YouTube, you can listen to whatever you want, when you want to, from your smartphone. I am sure that there will be some audiophiles who feel that smartphone sound is terrible and a DAP is the goto setup. Since I did not notice much of a difference in sound quality from the M5 or my phone with wired or bluetooth headsets. The M5 does not have its own speaker and thus it relies on the quality of headphones that you select. By the time you have purchased the device and memory card, you will likely be quite close to a reasonable pair of Bluetooth headphones. In fact, some like 1MORE have their own App that allows you to gain EQ functions. As another downside when compared to an iPhone, the device did not support video playback. For the price, the device should have come with a memory card, possibly a silicone strap, and should have had covers for the USB-C, 3.5mm port and micro SD port. I did not find any mention of waterproofing, which decreased the utility further. So unless you want a retro MP3/MP4 experience, I would recommend that you save for a better quality pair of earphones/headphones and continue to use your smartphone as your jack-of-all-trades device. I appreciated the watch like structure, the ability to rotate the screen, and the equalizer functions. However, I disliked the screen’s lack of responsiveness. The user interface felt basic, the device had no radio transmitter, and I was unable to see what was playing when in Bluetooth Receiver mode. I read several other reviews to try to see what I was missing but continued to return to my original question of “what does the average person gain by purchasing this device?” Learn more about the FiiO M5 Player. While over-ear headphones aren’t highly-portable, they’re known for doing an excellent job at providing isolation of your favorite music over other noise.

Most over-ear Bluetooth earphones provide long hours of playing time and hi-fidelity stereo at a very affordable price.

What are the desired key features

Comfort

This would be the top priority for you to pick up a bluetooth headset. It will be on your ears for the long ride and comfort also means safety. If you are not comfortable in your headset kit and helmet, it might reduce the quality of your ride/touring.

Battery life

The average battery life of a motorcycle bluetooth headset is about 10 hours if it is charged fully. You should consider the time of your riding and compare it to the talk hours and standby hours of the headset.

More often, it should allow you at least a day of using, and many headsets on the market can meet this requirement. So you do not have to worry, but it is better to look at the battery life of your purchased item.

Range, call quality and connectivity

Based on your main purpose of using a bluetooth headset for your ride, you could decide which quality is more necessary. If your focus is on communication with other riders and passengers, first you should look for a headset that has suitable intercom range (lower range if you ride in small groups and higher range if you ride in much bigger groups).

The largest range and number of riders to connect with a bluetooth headset on the market right now is about 8 kilometers and 16 riders. The second quality to assure good call quality is the speakers and the mic. It should provide a clear sound that you do not have to shout through your phones to be heard. It should have noise cancelling and wind reducing ability because most of the time you are on the road with many unwanted sounds that you do not want to get involved in your conversation.

Some headsets even have automatic connectivity functions that allow riders to be instantly in contact with each other when they are in the intercom range. But you have to pay a much higher price for this advanced technology.

Sound quality

If your focus is also to listen to some music for entertainment, or it could be following the GPS navigation by voice, you should look for a headset that provides good sound quality and you should look attentively to the speakers of the headset kit.

Does it add bass to your music to allow a better listening experience? Is the volume clear or soft enough? And is it easy and convenient to change music backward, forward, or does it allow you to change the volume and not harm your ears with too loud sound? Finally, is the connectivity with your phones or portable devices stable?

A good sound quality also helps you have better call quality and improve the experience of talking with your peers when you are riding.

USB port/cable charging

Uses a USB port (and cable) charging, nothing proprietary in the headset-side plug. The charging port on the headset must be a standard USB port (micro or mini). (The other end should be a standard USB plug, which lets you charge from a powered USB port on a desktop or notebook computer, or a USB charger.)

Well-placed, usable controls

Remember, you’re trying to control the headset by reaching up with a finger, without looking, to accept/hang up, change the volume, and maybe something else. You don’t want to be hanging up on somebody when you’re trying to change the volume. It may take getting used to — or you may need different-sized fingers — or a given headset may not be the one for you.

Budget

Technology is changing rapidly. Headphones have now become so much more than a device only to talk or listen to music. There is no end to innovation. New and better features are added every day. However, you should take your budget into consideration, new tech means more money for most of the case. If you need basic functions, you should come for the lower budget headsets.

Useful but not essential features

Simple voice control. I’ve now encountered at least two headsets that take simple voice commands like “Hey Siri.”

Multipoint (a.k.a. “multishifting”) lets you switch it among several active devices, like between your BlackBerry and your netbook.

Small, compact USB charger. You want one that fits cleanly into a pocket or travel kit, but you’re likely to have enough better ones kicking around; don’t make this the deciding factor.

Best iPhone 11 and 11 Pro cases to buy for 2020

There are a multitude of cases that protect the new iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Max, which Apple released in September. This list of my favorite cases focus on those that offer easy charging, are relatively slim and provide strong drop protection for your brand new iPhone. A few budget cases are included, but since this is more of a best-of-the-best list, most of my picks tend to be a bit spendier than the typical generic case you’ll find on Amazon for $20 or less. Also, since the iPhone 11 comes in a variety of colors that people may want to show off, I’ve included a number of cases that are translucent.

If you’re looking for the best iPhone 11 cases that are clear for your new smartphone, you can’t go wrong with Speck’s Stay Clear case, which resists discoloration (yes, cheap clear cases can turn yellow). It has a durable polycarbonate outer shell, provides 13-foot drop protection and includes Microban antimicrobial product protection. The case also allows for easy wireless charging. The clear, wireless charging case is available in versions for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Otterbox is making its superprotective Otterbox Defender series case for all the brand-new iPhone 11 models, but most people want something slimmer. Zagg recently bought top British casemaker Gear4 and is seeking to further build out its brand in the US. In terms of style and protection, Gear4’s cases are right there with Otterbox and Speck, all of them lined with the company’s D3O shock-absorbing material and featuring beveled edges to protect your phone. My favorites include the translucent Picadilly (also available for Samsung Galaxy) and Crystal Palace cases, as well as the Battersea. If you’re looking for a cheap clear case for your new iPhone 11, Spigen’s Ultra Hybrid is a good value at around $11-$15, depending on which version of iPhone 11 you have. No drop rating is listed for the case, but it feels like Spigen cases offer reasonable protection (if you want even stronger protection, consider shelling out $35 more for the Spigen Tough Armor case), and it should appeal to folks who want a case that’s neither too thin nor too thick (Speck’s clear case is a bit thicker and does seem more protective). Unlike the Tough Armor, a lot of these cheaper clear cases have a habit of turning yellow over time (and becoming less translucent), but they’re cheap enough that you probably won’t mind shelling out for a replacement if that happens.

It’s drop-tested to 13 feet (about 4 meters) and is one of the best all-around cases for the iPhone 11. The case is highly protective, with a polycarbonate outer shell, but it’s not too bulky. Its thin design makes wireless charging easy.

Mous makes several cases that have eye-catching designs, including models finished in leather and wood. They’re all lined with the company’s AiroShock material that, according to the company, delivers excellent protection in a slim design. They do seem durable and all include a lifetime warranty.

I liked the speckled leather Contour case (pictured above, left), but Mous’ Limitless 3.0 line — the bamboo case on the right — is compatible with the company’s Limitless 3.0 accessories, which include a wallet that magnetically adheres to the back of the case and a couple of mounts, one of which is an air-vent mount for your car.

It’s also worth noting that these Mous cases are the only ones I’ve seen that have a SIM card storage slot on the inside of the case for international travelers in the habit of swapping SIM cards.

Lifeproof, now owned by Otterbox, isn’t in the business of making waterproof cases anymore (it has only one case that’s waterproof: the Fre). But it still makes very nice cases to protect your iPhone, including the Next and Slam, as well as the new Flip Series, which adds a slip-out wallet element that turns into a kickstand. I personally like the Slam best. It costs $46 and comes in a variety of colors and designs. Pair it with its Rewind wall charger for speedy charging.

Moshi has always made attractive cases for iPhones, and its Overture (folio), iGlaze, Vitros and Altra (lanyard included) cases are available for the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. The Overture is actually a two-in-one case that’s a great screen protector. You fit your iPhone into a slim shell case that then magnetically adheres to the cover, which has slots for storing credit cards and cash. You can buy one in the $25-to-$50 price range.

Truth be told, I wasn’t a fan of earlier Pelican cases, which were very protective but just a little too bulky (and ugly). iFace cases are hugely popular in Japan but aren’t so well known in the US. With their oversized rounded edges and plenty of fun colors to choose from, they certainly stand out from the crowd and are quite protective. The First Class (pictured above in red and green) is available in a variety of colors and costs $25.

One of the newer models — the Reflection ($30) — has a transparent back that’s made of tempered glass. It’s available with several different trim color options.

Skech’s new Vortex case has a soft-to-the-touch finish and an integrated flip-out metal ring kickstand, and it adheres to the included magnetic car-vent mount. It comes in several color options (blue and black pictured) for all iPhone 11 models. It’s a little pricey at $50, but it does have some nifty extras (like a built-in ring holder and responsive buttons) and a nice design with 10-foot drop protection. You can still charge your phone on a wireless charging pad with the case on.

I also like Skech’s clear case, the Echo Air, which costs less ($30).

Nomad makes a line of nice leather cases, including leather wallet folio cases that come in brown or black. I personally like its new Rugged case, which features water-resistant leather. It’s rated for 6-foot (2 meter) drop protection. The leather case runs around $50, while the folio version, which has a flap that covers the screen, costs $70.

Adidas-branded cases come in a variety of flavors that offer eye-catching designs that match some of the company’s iconic sneakers. They’re all pretty slim and provide decent though not great protection. Prices are anywhere from $12 to $50, depending on the style.

BodyGuardz was initially known for its screen protectors, but in recent years it’s put out some interesting iPhone cases. Silk brings its line of affordable, simple, slim cases and wallet cases to the iPhone 11 under the new brand name of Smartish. The Smartish Walletslayer case is one of the best iPhone 11 cases for those on a budget. It sells for $15 and holds three credit cards plus cash.

Razer, which makes laptops and gaming accessories (among other products), brings its line of “gaming” cases to the iPhone 11, and they’re pretty nice. The cases have something called Thermaphene-Based Heat Dissipation that “redirects trapped heat through a thermally conductive lining adjacent to vented airflow channels to significantly improve cooling compared to traditional cases.” It’s a bit of a gimmick, but it seems to help a little when you’re playing graphically intensive games for long periods. The cases start around $20 and come in Pro and Slim versions. I preferred the more protective Pro, which is currently on sale for $20.

X-Doria’s Defense series cases come in a wide variety of styles and cost a little less than competing premium cases from Gear4, Speck and Otterbox. I personally like the Defense Clear Series (pictured, second from right), which is a good match for the standard iPhone 11. It’s $25 and is available with a black or white trim.

I’ve always been a fan of Tech21’s Evo Check ($40) cases for previous iPhones and they’re available for the new iPhone 11 in a few different translucent color options (they’re the pink and smokey black cases in the photo above). Tech21 is also offering the slightly thinner but more colorful Studio series cases, which costs $10 less.

Tech21’s Evo Wallet is a well-designed folio case that features a screen protector cover with a magnetic latch and a slot on the inside for storing a couple of credit cards and a little bit of cash. The only small strike against it is that it doesn’t convert into a viewing stand for watching videos. Portland-based Grovemade produces some beautifully crafted wooden cases. Its $60 wood bumper cases are the most affordable, but naturally I’m a fan of its Walnut and Leather Wallet case, which retails for a mere $130 (as a new customer you do get 10 percent off). It’s one of the lighter, more refined looking wallet cases you’ll find, and also comes in a lighter maple color.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone X - and Why I Didn't Buy the iPhone 11 Pro

I’ll start off be talking briefly about my experience with the iPhone X.

Just over two years since Apple launched it’s flagship phone, featuring a new design, new construction and heavily updated hardware, the makers of all things sexy (that man can legally pay money for anyway) have released the iPhone 11.

While the iPhone 11 may not be distinctly different to any of its predecessors, the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max certainly are - just flip them over and take a look at the back - you’ll know what i mean.

Having got my hands on my iPhone X at launch in 2017, my excitement was quickly culled by a screen issue. Well, basically, it didn’t work - apart from flashing and showing me a few colourful lines, i couldn’t really use it.

A trip to the Apple Store, and an amusing comment about Samsung having supplied the screens for the X, i left with a new replacement.

Two weeks later, i was back at the Apple Store with exactly the same problem! I started November 2017 with an iPhone 7, and entered December on my third(!) iPhone X.

This third handset served me well, and didn’t really miss a beat until the summer of this year - then the problem began…

First, Face ID failed. It took me a couple of days to realise that every time i opened my phone, i had to use the passcode.

I made an appointment with apple, and they diagnosed a problem with the Face ID sensor - this despite the fact that Animoji’s still worked flawlessly! This was something no-one could really explain, and owing to the €585 repair cost from Apple, the nice employee there whispered that i could get €500 cash back for my iPhone X and then i could use the money to buy a different handset - the iPhone XR.

Now, i had done my homework before making this trip to the Genius Bar. I know, at worst, the Face ID sensor would cost around €90, and i’m no stranger to taking apart iPhones (I have daughters who like to break the screens on the things), so i thought i would repair it myself.

One hour, and €24 later, i had installed the new Face ID sensor, which by the way also contains the front camera and proximity sensor (the part which automatically adjusts the brightness, and plays voice messages through the ear piece when you lift the phone to your head). The problem still remained. Everything worked as it should - just no Face ID.

I decided to leave things as they were - there was no way i was paying Apples repair cost - they would probably have done the exact same thing i just did, with the same result!

Going back two months ago, the shit really started to hit the fan as far as my phone was concerned!

I noticed apps were complaining about not being able to use location services. Sure enough, when i opened maps i had no location. My family couldn’t find me anymore on apples stalking service either! GPS dead now too?

Then, sure enough, the next problem occurred. And then the next. And then the next.

At the point where it (or I) finally gave up, my as new on the outside, but completly rotten on the inside, boasted the following list of ailments:

Face ID sensor failure

Proximity sensor failure

GPS failure

Battery in 'service' condition

It rattled (?)

Battery from full would run down to 3% in a matter of minutes, then stay at 3% for several hours

SIM card not recognised / Searching for network

Screen hanged or shudder while animating

Gyroscopic senor failure (this is a guess, but when you picked the phone up and tilted it in any way it would swith off)

Eventually, 10 days ago, my iPhone X decided enough is enough, and refused to switch on for any longer than flashing the Apple logo at me for a second or two.

So, with all this in mind, a had to pull the trigger and get a new iPhone - but which of the iPhone 11 range would be best suited to me?

Being a photographer of course, the new tripple lens system of the 11 Pro really appealed. However, the standard Pro has the same size as the X, and i wanted more real-estate under my thumbs. So, the Pro Max was clearly the way to go right? Wrong. Here's why. In one sentence. 4 characters...

Yes, four-hundred-and-fifty-euros is what Apple deems a necessary bounty over the price of the standard iPhone 11. Why? Well, that's the big question! The short answer: A bigger, better screen, bigger battery (of course, it's a bigger phone) and the tripple lens rear camera.

My reasons for wanting the Pro Max were the camera system and the big-assed screen. However, there are two points of contention here for me where it makes it really difficult to justify the extra money:

1. The Pro Max features the tripple lens camera. BUT, the sparkly new toy of the ultrawide lens is available on the standard 11 at the cost of the telephoto lens of it's predecessor. The wide angle lens is the toy i wanted most, and the standard wide angle lens of the 11 is stablised and has up to 5x digital zoom - which in fairness is only really usable up to 2x - which is perfectly acceptable in most use cases.

2. The 11 is built around the chassis of the iPhone XR - which makes it, and therefore it's screen bigger that that of the iPhone 11 Pro. It's not that easy for me to understand why apple did this - they must of had a bunch of unused X and XR chassis hanging around in storage somewhere.

Of course, the 11 Pro Max is better, but just how much better? Here's a little, to-the-point-comparision to help you decide:

The Pro Max (both Pro's) has more RAM 6GB vs 4GB

The Pro Max has a better screen: 6.5'' vs 6.1'', 1242x2688 463dpi vs 828x1792 324dpi resolution and Retina vs LCD (as far as screen sizes go....it's a bigger phone! The 11 Pro for reference has a 5.8'' 463dpi retina display with 1125x2436 resolution.)

The 11 has the Aluminium/Glass construction, similar to that of the iPhone XR vs Stainless Steel / Glass akin to the rest of the X series - is this really a big concern?

Both Pro handsets have the tripple camera system - which we already covered.

The 11 Pro Max has 3400mAh battery - again, like the screen, it's a bigger phone, and that bigger screen needs more power - so this makes sense - and is it really an issue. The extra juice equates to about 3 hours more contiuous use over the 11 standard.

The forces swinging in favour of the 11 Standard vs the 11 Pro Max

Massive price saving - on contract up to €15 per month.

Same A13 processor as the Pro's.

Same 12mp f2.2 front facing camera with up to 120fps (in 1080p) video

Lighter weight compared to the Pros

Same 4k 60fps capability with the rear camera array.

Waterproof - just like the Pro's, allbeit up to two meters and not 4.

Same sound system as the Pro's.

Range of colours available (not that important to most).

All in all, my decision to pull the trigger on the 11 over the 11 Pro Max was influenced by not being able to justify the higher cost against the better quality screen, which most users won't notice anyway, and the extra camera, which the majority of users wouldn't miss either. Plus, i don't think i have any pants or jackets with pockets big enough for the Pro Max, which would mean i'd need to buy one of those silly round-the-neck-pouch-thingies!

Living with the iPhone 11

Well, it's been a good start!

There are, needless to say, some really noticable improvements in this phone when comparted to my iPhone X - apart from the obvious fact that it works!

The A13 processor is markedly faster than the A11 of the X. Lightning fast in fact. This has, so far, been most noticable for me when using Face ID. You look at the phone and it opens in the exact instant your face is in front of it. 4GB of RAM, compared to 3GB in X certainly play a role here too.

The screen is clear, sharp and blacks are nicer than on the X dispite only having an IPS LCD here - i really see no real disadvantage of not having the OLED of the X - it really is a pleasant experience. The larger screen of the 11 is really nice to have in a phone that is only 20g heavier. A 3110mAh battery means extra play-time when compared to the 2617mAh cell in the X. And the final, really noticable thing is the front camera. Snapping a selfie for the Mrs, it really is noticable there is an addition 5mp in the front camera!

So, what about the camera?

This is where things get fun.

Enter the camera app, and you're by default in the standard wide angle mode. Hit the 1x button to jump to ultra wide angle, and, fuuuuuuck! How does that happen! I love having a really wide, border fish-eye lens on a DSLR - and this thing is just as much fun!

Even though the screen is of a lesser resolution and pixel-density when compared to the iPhone X, images and videos just look so much better. This is potentially down to the new, faster A13 Processor combining with the new IPS LCD.

Portrait mode looks great and focuses better and faster than before. Although the filters on offer in portrait mode still leave something to be desired! One really cool feature of portrait mode, is now you can adjust the aperture when editing the shot afterwards, this adjusts how blurred the background is, which is pretty cool!

We also now have the ability to shoot 4k video at 60fps, which means when using the clips in editing software you can slow these down to 24-30fps and have slow motion which remains crystal clear and natively in 4k resolution!

As mentioned, the iPhone 11 packs 2 cameras, but unlike the X the 2x Optical telephone lens has given way to an ultra wide angle lens.

The specs:

26mm f1.8 Wide Angle, 6 element lens with 100% focus coverage and on-board image stabilisation. Focus areas as before can be selected in the camera app. This lens uses Apples new Deep Fusion engine. There’s no setting for this, and it only works with the ‘Photo Capture Outside the Frame’ turned off - more on this soon!

13mm f2.4 Ultra Wide Angle, 5 element lens with 120 degree field of view. Focusing on this lens is Phase Detection auto-focus. Which essential means you can't, and don't need to select your focus area. Selecting areas of the screen while in Ultra Wide will of course set your exposure levels as always in iOS.

Night Mode

Night mode is only available when using the default wide-angle lens. It effectively lengthens the shutter speed depending on what the phone decides the available light is. It really does work well, but i suspect there is some serious ISO hocus pocus going on behind the scenes, which could have a negative effect on what you can achieve in this mode.

So, be warned, Night Mode is cool, but your phone is slowing down it’s shutter speed, and it can shoot at 10 seconds depending on the light - so you need to keep still. The on board stabilisation of the wide angle lens will help you out to a degree - but anything over 2 seconds (which is shown in the moon logo on the top of the screen, and you’re gonna need some kind of tripod.).

Ready for something clever? And confusing?

Deep Fusion. Yeah we mentioned that already. Some kind of Apple hocus pocus going on in the background that only those in cahoots with the dark arts will understand. It makes pictures with the default lens look sexier - and that’s about it. We don’t need to know any more.

BUT

The camera has one final cool-assed feature…
