Diahann Carroll, Pioneering Actress on ‘Julia’ and 'Dynasty,’ Dies at 84
She also landed an historic Tony Award, plus an Oscar nomination for her performance in 'Claudine.'
Diahann Carroll, the captivating singer and actress who came from the Bronx to win a Tony Award, receive an Oscar nomination and make television history with her turns on Julia and Dynasty, has died Friday. She was 84.
Carroll died at her home in Los Angeles after a long bout with cancer, her daughter, producer-journalist Suzanne Kay, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Carroll was known as a Las Vegas and nightclub performer and for her performances on Broadway and in the Hollywood musicals Carmen Jones and Porgy & Bess when she was approached by an NBC executive to star as Julia Baker, a widowed nurse raising a young son, on the comedy Julia.
She didn't want to do it. "I really didn't believe that this was a show that was going to work," she said in a 1998 chat for the website The Interviews: An Oral History of Television. "I thought it was something that was going to leave someone's consciousness in a very short period of time. I thought, 'Let them go elsewhere.' "
However, when Carroll learned that Hal Kanter, the veteran screenwriter who created the show, thought she was too glamorous for the part, she was determined to change his mind. She altered her hairstyle and mastered the pilot script, quickly convincing him that she was the right woman.
Carroll thus became the first African-American female to star in a non-stereotypical role in her own primetime network series. (Several actresses portrayed a maid on ABC's Beulah in the early 1950s.)
Baker, whose husband had died in Vietnam, worked for a doctor (Lloyd Nolan) at an aerospace company; she was educated and outspoken, and she dated men (including characters played by Fred Williamson, Paul Winfield and Don Marshall) who were successful, too.
"We were saying to the country, 'We're going to present a very upper middle-class black woman raising her child, and her major concentration is not going to be about suffering in the ghetto,' " Carroll noted.
"Many people were incensed about that. They felt that [African Americans] didn't have that many opportunities on television or in film to present our plight as the underdog … they felt the [real-world] suffering was much too acute to be so trivial as to present a middle-class woman who is dealing with the business of being a nurse.
"But we were of the opinion that what we were doing was important, and we never left that point of view … even though some of that criticism of course was valid. We were of a mind that this was a different show. We were allowed to have this show."
Julia, which premiered in September 1968, finished No. 7 in the ratings in the first of its three seasons, and Carroll received an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe for her work.
As the sultry fashionista Dominique Deveraux — the first prominently featured African-American character on a primetime soap opera — Carroll played a much edgier character for three seasons on ABC's Dynasty and its spinoff The Colbys, delightfully dueling with fellow diva Alexis Carrington Colby (Joan Collins).
While recuperating after starring on Broadway in Agnes of God, Carroll had found herself digging Dynasty — "Isn't this the biggest hoot?" she said — and lobbied producer Aaron Spelling for a role on his series.
"They've done everything [on the show]. They've done incest, homosexuality, murder. I think they're slowly inching their way toward interracial," she recalled in a 1984 piece for People magazine. "I want to be wealthy and ruthless … I want to be the first black bitch on television."
Carroll made perhaps her biggest mark on the big screen with her scrappy title-role performance in Claudine (1974), playing a Harlem woman on welfare who raises six children on her own and falls for a garbage collector (James Earl Jones).
The part was originally given to her dear friend, Diana Sands. But when Sands (who had played Julia Baker's cousin on several episodes of Julia) was stricken with cancer, she suggested Carroll take her place.
"The producers said, 'How can she do this role? No one would believe she could do it," Carroll said. "I remember the headline in the paper: 'Would you believe Jackie Onassis as a welfare mother?' … The very coupling of the name Jackie Onassis and Diahann Carroll is very interesting, if you think about it. There question was, how do we make anyone believe that she has [six] children? And to be nominated for an Academy Award, to do that, it was the best, the best."
Carol Diahann Johnson was born in Fordham Hospital in the Bronx on July 17, 1935. Her father, John, was a subway conductor when she was young, and her mother, Mabel, a nurse. She won a scholarship to the High School of Music & Art, where Billy Dee Williams was a classmate.
At 15, she began to model clothing for black-audience magazines like Ebony,Tan and Jett. Her dad disapproved at first, then began to reconsider when she told him she had earned $600 for a session.
Her parents drove her to Philadelphia on many weekends so she could be a contestant on the TV talent show Teen Club, hosted by bandleader Paul Whiteman. And then she won several times on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts program, where she first billed herself as Diahann Carroll.
After enrolling at NYU to study psychology, she appeared on the Dennis James-hosted ABC talent show Chance of a Lifetime in 1953 and won for several weeks. One of her rewards was a regular engagement to perform at the famed Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan.
Christine Jorgensen taught her how to "carry" herself onstage, she said, and she moved in with her manager, training and rehearsing every day. She soon was singing in the Persian Room at New York's Plaza Hotel and at other hotspots including Ciro's, The Mocambo and The Cloister in Hollywood, The Black Orchid in Chicago and L'Olympia in Paris.
She soon dropped out of college to pursue performing full-time and was brought to Los Angeles to audition for Otto Preminger's Carmen Jones (1954), landing the role of Myrt opposite the likes of Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge.
At the end of 1954, she made her Broadway debut as the young star of the Truman Capote-Harold Arlen musical House of Flowers. Walter Kerr in The New York Herald Tribune called her "a plaintive and extraordinarily appealing ingenue."
She was cast to play Clara in Preminger and Rouben Mamoulian's movie adaptation of Porgy and Bess (1959), but her voice was considered too low for her character's Summertime number, so another singer dubbed for her.
She met Sidney Poitier on that film, thus beginning what she described as a "very turbulent" nine-year romance with him. (Carroll then had first non-singing movie role, playing a schoolteacher opposite Poitier, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward in 1961's Paris Blues).
She would become renowned for her phrasing, partially a result of her studying with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.
In 1963, she earned the first of her four career Emmy noms for portraying a teacher yet again on ABC's gritty Naked City.
Richard Rodgers spotted her during one of her frequent singing appearances on Jack Paar's Tonight Show and decided to compose a Broadway musical for her. After scrapping the idea to have her portray an Asian in 1958's Flower Drum Song, he wrote 1962's No Strings, a love story revolving around an African-American fashion model (Carroll) and a nebbish white novelist (Richard Kiley).
His first effort following the death of longtime collaborator Oscar Hammerstein II, it brought Carroll rave reviews and a Tony Award, the first given to a black woman for best actress in a lead role of a musical.
Soon after hosting a CBS summer replacement variety show in 1976, she retired from show business and moved to Oakland. Landing the role of Dominique — the half-sister of John Forsythe's Blake Carrington — in 1984 put her back on the map in Hollywood.
She told the show's writers: "The most important thing to remember is write for a white male, and you'll have the character. Don't try to write for what you think I am. Write for a white man who wants to be wealthy and powerful. And that's the way we found Dominique Deveraux."
More recently, Carroll had recurring roles as Jasmine Guy's mother on NBC's A Different World, as Isaiah Washington's mom on ABC's Grey's Anatomy and as a Park Avenue widow on USA's White Collar. She also appeared in such films as Eve's Bayou (1997) and on stage as Norman Desmond in a musical version of Sunset Blvd.
She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2011.
Carroll recorded several albums during her career and wrote the memoirs Diahann, published in 1986, and The Legs Are the Last to Go: Aging, Acting, Marrying, Mothering and Other Things I Learned Along the Way, in 2008.
She was married four times: to Monte Kay, a manager and a casting consultant on House of Flowers; to Freddie Glusman, a Las Vegas clothier (that union lasted just a few weeks); to magazine editor Robert DeLeon (he died in an auto accident in 1977); and to singer Vic Damone (from 1987 until their 1996 divorce). She also had a three-year romance with talk-show host David Frost.
In addition to her daughter, survivors include her grandchildren, August and Sydney.
Duane Byrge contributed to this report.

OPINION: May Diahann Carroll rest in peace! She was a great actress for many years.🙏

<p>Black Friday Survival: 10 Ruthless Tactics for a Holiday Shopping Victory</p>
Would they call them “rdquo & doorbuster; earnings if they didn’t actually want you to break down? It’s not marketing -- it’s an invitation, and it’s one that we highly recommend you act on before anyone else does. Based on our years of experience, we can guarantee that store clerks are more than willing to step aside when you sprint toward the door with a ram on your arms and a crazy look in your eye.
Black Friday is bad, but it’s not like you need a bulletproof vest -- that would be ridiculous! No, what you need is body armor made for the chaos of a prison riot, which is why we urge rsquo & Point Blank. Nobody would be dumb enough to brandish a gun at Best Buy, but a shiv to the back? Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst …
In case you haven’t noticed, TV’s have gotten absolutely freaking enormous in the last few years, and if you’re going to have any hope of lugging that enormous 84-inch quantum dot OLED to the checkstand, you’ll need some mechanical aid. This badboy was created by Lockheed Martin to transfer loads through the exoskeleton to the ground in standing or kneeling positions, and allows operators to wield heavy objects as if they were weightless. This way, while some struggle to maneuver a cart through the throngs of crazed shoppers, you can sprint straight to the TV section and throw that new OLED over your shoulder like it’s nothing.
It’s you on Black Friday against a herd of wild animals, so you should definitely equip yourself with something. Electric cattle prods are inexpensive, effective, and have a longer reach than your normal taser; so if you bring one along, you’ll be able to keep the frenzied masses at a safe distance as you make your way out the door with your hard-won bounty. That & rsquo; s if you bust out the bear mace if a person gets too near. You do plan on bringing a couple cans of bear mace, right? We feel like that should go without saying here.
Few things match before you can navigate the torrent of humanity between you and it the frustration of seeing the ideal Black Friday deal fly off the shelf. Don’t let that smug suburban soccer mom walk off with the previous Nintendo Switch while you’re nonetheless 30 yards out; with this blow gun from Cabela’s, you can drop her in her tracks and buy just enough time near the gap. Once you’re face to face, it’s a fair fight -- unless you’ve poisoned your darts.
The stink bomb should be your go-to weapon for crowd control whereas the blowgun is good for neutralizing an individual. It uses a pair of simple chemicals that, when mixed, create a odor that is horrendously that & rsquo;s guaranteed to clear out a large area. In this way, when you see a herd of crazed holiday deal-seekers making their way toward the Microsoft Surface Book display you’ve had your eye on, you can just hurl a vial onto it and force everyone to vacate the area. You can swoop in with a clothespin on your nose and snag up all of the loot while everyone else is busy coughing, gagging, and vomiting uncontrollably.
If your Black Friday plans include warehouse stores like Costco, Sam’BJ, and s Club’s, you&rsquo you can’t buy: height. Because, while your rivals are duking it out for flatscreen TVs that they can reach, untold riches await far above the fray, at the peak of the racks usually accessible by forklift. This hook includes 33 feet of nylon rope weight rated to 800 lbs and folds up for easy concealment. Just remember to bring a strong friend with coordination that is good, because you scale that rack
Once you’ve bashed the door in and made your entry, make certain you drain an entire bottle of the potent personal lubricant all that you cross. This will produce an incredibly effective hazard and help keep the hordes of crazed holiday shoppers supporting you just long enough to get a generous head start. It’s like throwing banana peels all over the floor, but noticeable and easier to transport. It’s ideal for anal.
Joining the hardest of Black Friday shoppers by camping out in front of your merchant Thursday doesn’rsquo & t mean squat if you;re not prepared for what happens when these doors open. All of your buddies who snore your dedication before are likely to be prowling the line before the sun comes up like a bunch of lions playing musical chairs. Lucky for you, there are no rules against performance enhancing drugs so bring an EpiPen. While they’re jacking up on java, you’ll be running through brick walls.
They also happen to be quite effective as emergency anti-trampling tools, although these suckers are intended for big mountain bikers who regularly face the risk of being buried under thousands of tons of snow. Strap one on your back, and should you ever find yourself overcome by a World War Z-design peoplelanche from the electronics aisle, just pull the ripcord to set up two high-pressure protective airbags in your sides. They’re also ideal for establishing a bubble that is private . Homeboy in the Rudolph sweater? Give that ripcord you and a tug & rsquo;ll send him flying across the room.
You know the real reason Black Friday is so beloved by Americans? The violence. It gives the average Joe a chance act at a fumble scrum like an NFL linebacker, while caring for holiday shopping and feeding our jones. Don’t prevent it; prepare for it. Head to your favorite retailer geared up with these weapons … er … protections, and you won’t survive Friday -- Friday you'll win.

Cyber Monday 2018: 15 Best Tech Deals for Gifting
New Post has been published on https://www.articletec.com/cyber-monday-2018-15-best-tech-deals-for-gifting/
Cyber Monday 2018: 15 Best Tech Deals for Gifting
It’s Cyber Monday, but many of the deals you’re seeing today started on Black Friday. We’ve been adding and removing items from our categorized lists all weekend, and you should really check them out if you want to see all of the best tech deals today. We’ll keep updating them till the bitter end. But below we wanted to highlight a few of the deals that are really impressing us. Whether you’re treating yourself, or hunting for gifts, we think these devices will make anyone happy, and they’re all on deep discount through the end of the day.
Deals tend to flow in and out of availability and vary in price during Cyber Monday. Please bear with us. We will continue to update this list as we learn about new deals, and cross out links that no longer offer the promised discount, or sell out.
1. A Gift to Start a Smart Home
Amazon Smart Plug + Echo Dot for $29 ($46 off)
This deal is a really nice intro to smart home … stuff for you or someone else. The new Echo Dot sounds better than its predecessors and is a good way to get used to what Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant can offer, from answering questions and forecasting the weather to playing music—or controlling a device like a light with this smart plug. There is something very pleasant about asking Alexa to turn on your lights for you.
2. Headphones That Silence Noise
Bose QuietComfort 25 (Corded) for $110 ($70 off)
These are a small step down from the Bose QC35 II (also on sale for Cyber Monday), but not by much. They have a wire, but they still sound fantastic and cancel noise better than most headphones. They will work with any device that has a 3.5mm headphone jack—or an adapter like many phones now have. The Apple version will work on non-Apple devices as well. You’ll just lose the ability to control your device using the buttons on the cable.
3. The Latest Trend in Smart Speakers
Lenovo Smart Display for $99 ($100 off)
We like Lenovo’s Smart Display a lot. It’s one of the Best Google Home Speakers you can buy and a great companion for the kitchen thanks to its ability to show recipes step-by-step. Google displays can do most everything an Echo can, but they’re easier to set up than 3rd party Alexa speakers and Google tends to answer questions more reliably. The new video news report from CNN is also informative and useful. This speaker works OK for music, but if you want to up your music quality, we recommend the JBL Link View ($100 off for Cyber Monday).
4. The Gift of Coding
Anki Cozmo STEM Toy for $119 ($61 off)
There are a lot of amazing STEM toys for kids these days, and the Cozmo is one of our favorites. First off, the Cozmo is adorable to look at, a twinkling robot buddy that fits in the palm of your hand. Using an Android or iOS app, both kids and parents can teach him how to accomplish simple tasks, and learn how some programming basics without even realizing it. He’s also available at Walmart and Target ($140).
5. TV Streaming Upgrade
Hulu 1-Year Subscription for $12 Total ($84 off)
This is a no-brainer deal and a perfect gift for anyone mooching off your subscription. If you stream, you should have Hulu. It’s the service that gets a ton of first-run TV shows a day after they air on broadcast TV from Fox, ABC, NBC, and many other channels. This plan has limited commercials, but you can upgrade to the commercial-free plan later for an extra few bucks per month.
6. Home Theater in a Box
Vizio 2.1-channel Soundbar + Sub for $98 ($50 off)
If you’re buying for someone who owns a beautiful TV, but listens to it from the crappy TV speakers, get them a soundbar. This Vizio does the job well, thanks to its bundled subwoofer. And if you’re someone who doesn’t own any speakers for your TV, give it a try. You’ll realize what you’re not hearing pretty quickly.
7. The Best Tablet
Apple iPad 2018 for $249 ($80 off)
Note: This deal fluctuates in and out of sale a lot. Check alternate colors and keep trying. The price should hold if you buy it out of stock, but on sale.
There’s just no comparison between the iPad and other tablets. It’s hands down the best, with a slicker interface and far better apps and games. This model is also compatible with the Apple Pencil, which is one of the best digital drawing/writing tools you can own. The iPad does not get cheaper than this. This deal is also available at Walmart.
8. A Killer Smartphone for Hundreds Less
Samsung Galaxy S9 for $520 ($200 off)
The Galaxy S9 can stand toe-to-toe with the absolute best phones of 2018, and today it’s priced $300 to $500 less than almost all of them. This deal is also available from Samsung, Best Buy, and B&H.
9. The Gift of a Clean Floor
iRobot Roomba 690 for $249 ($126 off)
Robot vacuums are neat, and Roombas are still our favorite, but they’re often prohibitively expensive. The Roomba 690 is a good mid-range robot vac that’s Wi-Fi enabled and has many of iRobot’s best features. This deal is also available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Best Buy.
10. A Smart FirePit for Outdoors-Loving Apartment Dwellers
BioLite FirePit for $160 ($40 off)
Fire pits make a wonderful, primal gathering place in the evening, to roast marshmallows, listen to music, and look at the stars. Unfortunately, they come with a lot of inconveniences, like … wood, ash, and sparks. The BioLite FirePit efficiently burns fuel in a mesh box lined with 51 tiny air jets, letting out warmth and light while keeping in ash, smoke, and stray embers. You can grill on the hibachi cooktop and control the intensity of the flames with the accompanying smartphone app. It’s the perfect centerpiece in a small balcony or backyard.
11. Make Streaming Netflix Easier
Roku Streaming Stick Plus for $45 ($25 off)
Every TV should have a Roku connected to it. It’s the best platform for streaming Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon Prime Video, and every other app, and the Streaming Stick Plus is the best Roku for most people (Read our Roku Guide). It plugs right into an HDMI slot on your TV and can hold a solid dual-band Wi-Fi connection, which is especially good for homes with poor Wi-Fi. If your loved one is in the market for a TV, too, the 43-inch TCL 4K Roku TV is also a steal.
12. The Hottest Game Console
Nintendo Switch + $50 Gift Card for $300 ($50 off)
The Nintendo Switch will likely be one of the most popular gifts for the second year running. It has a ton of fun games, including a new Super Smash Bros. game hitting shelves in just about a week. This bundle gives you a normal-priced Switch, but with an extra $50 GameStop gift card. With that $50, you can pick up a game like Super Mario Odyssey.
13. A Great, Affordable Gaming Headset
HyperX Cloud Stinger Gaming Headset for $25 ($15 off)
There are a lot of wonderful wireless gaming headsets, but they don’t come cheap—and since normal headsets plug into the wireless controllers on the PS4 and Xbox, they aren’t exactly necessary. This Cloud Stinger is one of our favorite headsets. It has a comfy fit and great sound. The mic also auto mutes when you lift it up. At this price, it’s an awesome get for any online gamer.
14. A Snuggly, Sustainable Sweatshirt
Prana Cozy Up Sweatshirt for $55 ($24 off)
Giving warm, cuddly clothing as a present feels like giving your loved one a hug to take home with them. Unfortunately, the fashion industry is responsible for a wide array of negative environmental impacts, like microplastics in the water and greenhouse gas emissions. But you can gift the Prana sweatshirt guilt-free, as it’s made from a blend of recycled polyester, hemp, and Tencel. It also has a soft fleece lining that will feel luxurious, anywhere from post-yoga class to watching TV on the couch.
15. Smart and Fit
Fitbit Versa for $149 ($51 off)
The Fitbit Versa is one of our favorite fitness trackers and a step up from the old Fitbits you might remember. It monitors sleep, heart rate, and steps while showing the time. Its battery life also lasts for 3-4 days on a charge. This deal is also available at Walmart, Best Buy, and Target.

Vizio TV lineup: every V-Series, M-Series, P-Series and D-Series TV coming this year
This year, Vizio's TV lineup is all about bringing the best features down to the more affordable price ranges. That's always been Vizio's MO, but this year the TV manufacturer is taking that to new levels with the addition of the IQ Processor to the D-Series of Full-HD TVs and 4K/120Hz support in the P-Series Quantum.
While there's no new OLED TV this year or any 8K TVs, Vizio's 2021-2022 TV lineup runs the gamut of affordability with the top spot going to the new-and-improved Vizio P-Series Quantum X that comes in a massive 85-inch screen size.
That said, where most folks will find the best combination of value and performance is the tried and tested M-Series Quantum, available in the new M-Series MQ7 and MQ6 lineups. The former is slightly brighter and has more local dimming zones, but the latter is a little cheaper and retains many of the same features.
That's doubly true if you're looking at a Vizio TV for Black Friday 2021. Vizio has been known to pull out all the stops for the shopping holiday, often discounting its TVs upwards of 40-50%. If you're after some steep discounts, make sure to check out our best Black Friday TV deals for all the latest price drops.
Don't miss our review of the Vizio V-Series (2020)
Vizio TV 2021 technology
Previous years have brought a massive change in technology – like quantum dots or OLED TVs – to Vizio's TV lineup. This year, however, that's not the case.
Most of the big changes you'll see in this year's lineup are to the remote that now comes with a built-in microphone and support for AMD Free-Sync on more models. For console gamers, the entire Vizio TV lineup will play nicely with the PS5 and Xbox Series X as many support HDMI 2.1, however you'll only be able to play games at their highest settings on the Vizio P-Series Quantum and P-Series Quantum X that support 4K/120.
Speaking of the P-Series Quantum and P-Series Quantum X, Vizio says the latest models can hit up to 84% of REC2020 and 85% of REC2020, respectively, making them some of the most colorful TVs we've yet to see from the manufacturer. In terms of brightness you're looking at 1,200 nits and up to 3,000 nits, respectively, which means Samsung could have a competitor on its hands when you're looking for the brightest TVs on the market.
Further down the line, VRR via HDMI 2.1 and Vizio’s ProGaming Engine make their return this year and offer faster response time and lower input lag for the D-Series, V-Series, M-Series, P-Series and P-Series Quantum X. Plus, on top of that, you've got Dolby Vision support all the way through the V-Series, just like last year.
Outside of those big changes, we're getting a refreshed version of the ultra-budget D-Series for 2021 that will offer Full-HD and HD resolution in 24-, 32- and 40-inch screen sizes that could be great for younger kids or a second bedroom.
In terms of smart platforms, Vizio is once again stocking its TVs with SmartCast. The latest version of the smart platform is significantly faster and smoother, according to Vizio, and will support Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant and Alexa interactions. The new voice remote will allow you to jump to shows and movies from any screen, or you can use it to search for something new to watch.
Overall, this isn't the most massive overhaul in technology for Vizio, but the changes are welcome all the same.
New Vizio TVs for 2021 and 2022
Vizio P-Series Quantum X
Only available in a massive 85-inch screen size, the P-Series Quantum X will make its triumphant return in 2021. The highlights of the screen this year are the higher peak brightness and wider color gamut of 3,000 nits and 85% of REC2020, plus the 792 local dimming zones. Once again the LED-LCD TV will use the IQ Ultra Processor and will support the latest game consoles at 4K/120. There's Dolby Vision HDR as well as HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, and the TV comes with the new voice remote.
US Model Names: TBD

Vizio P-Series Quantum (PQ9)
Stepping down from the P-Series Quantum X is the P-Series Quantum (PQ9), available in a more reasonable 65- and 75-inch screen sizes. This model drops the local dimming zones from 792 down to only 210 in the 75-inch model, and drops the brightness from up to 3,000 nits down to only 1,200 nits or so. Other than that, many of the high-end specs remain including support for all the HDR formats and HDMI 2.1 for 4K/120, plus the voice remote.

Vizio M-Series Quantum (MQ7 and MQ6)
OK, here's where it gets a little confusing. Like previous years, Vizio is once again making two different M-Series lineups, the MQ7 and the MQ6. The MQ7 is the better of the two, offering higher brightness and more local dimming zones. Both the MQ7 and MQ6 use the IQ Active Processor instead of the IQ Ultra Processor found in the P-Series lineup, but still support all the high-end HDR formats. The biggest tradeoff here is that the TVs only have a native refresh rate of 60Hz, meaning you won't be able to get them to support 4K/120 when using an Xbox Series X or PS5. Still, they'll be much more affordable than the P-Series Quantum and are likely to sell out fast come Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
US Model Names: Vizio M-Series M43Q6-J04, M50Q6-J01, M55Q6-J01, M65Q6-J09, M70Q6-J03, M75Q6-J03 | Vizio M-Series M50Q7-J01, M55Q7-J01, M58Q7-J01, M65Q7-J01

Vizio V-Series (V6 and V5)
Dropping down one more step we find the Vizio V-Series, available in two series. The V6 is going to be the slightly better-performing of the two with better motion handling, but it's only going to be available in two screen sizes: 70- and 75-inches. What you're more likely to come across is the new Vizio V-Series V5 that's available in 7(!) different screen sizes from 43 inches all the way up to 75 inches. Expect lower brightness and color volume than the M-Series as well as poor off-axis viewing, but in exchange for those shortcomings you're going to save some money on the price.
US Model Names: Vizio V-Series V435-J01| V505-J09, V555-J01, V585-J01, V655-J09 | V705-J03, V705x-J03, V706-J03, V755-J04, V756x-J03

Vizio D-Series (D4 and D-Series)
Finally, we have two new ranges of D-Series this year. It's not every year that we see new D-Series TVs, but it's nice to see that the lineup isn't dead. These are Vizio's HD TVs. The D4 Series supports Full-HD resolution in two screen sizes – 24 and 32 inches – while the standard D-Series supports both Full-HD and standard HD in four different screen sizes. These TVs will use the standard IQ Processor instead of the IQ Active or IQ Ultra, but will use the Vizio Gaming Engine to make games play a little better than you'd expect for an HD TV. Again, the highlight here is that they're going to be the most affordable models in the lineup, and might make for a nice second TV in a spare bedroom or a kids room where resolution is less important.
US Model Names: Vizio D-Series D24h-J09, D24f-J09, D24f4-J01, D32h-J09, D32f-J04, D32f4-J01, D40f-J09, D43f-J04

Vizio OLED (H1 Series)
The Vizio OLED might be one of the most exciting TVs of the year. It promises to lower the price of OLED screens by at least $300 here in the US if you plan on buying a 55-inch model, and even more if you have your eye on a 65-inch screen size.
In terms of specs, the Vizio OLED will use Vizio’s new IQ Ultra image processor and support VRR up to 120Hz. Vizio says the TV covers 98% of the DCI-P3 color space - but is limited to only around 800 nits of peak brightness.
Unlike the other Vizio 2020 TVs that are available starting in late June, we won’t get the Vizio OLED until the fall (September through November). By then, LG will have its BX OLED available and the Sony A8H OLED will have had a number of months head start. Still, if you can hold out for a few more months, you can stand to save a lot of money on an OLED.
US Model Names: Vizio OLED55-H1 ($1,299), OLED65-H1 ($1,999)

Vizio P-Series Quantum and P-Series Quantum X (Q9-H1 and QX-H1)
At the top of Vizio’s LED-LCD offerings are the Vizio P-Series Quantum and Vizio P-Series Quantum X that are returning for their second consecutive year.
The P-Series Quantum X is definitely the more formidable of the two, especially considering its crazy peak brightness, and will be available starting in June for $1,499. You’ll have three sizes to choose from (65-, 75- and 85-inches) and all of them use the new IQ Ultra image processor and VRR up to 120Hz. The 65- and 85-inch TVs hit 3,000 nits peak brightness and use 384 or 792 local dimming zones respectively, while the 75-inch version only reaches 2,800 nits with 480 local dimming zones.
Stepping down to the regular Vizio P-Series Quantum, you’ll still get the IQ Ultra image processor and VRR up to 120Hz, however you’ll take a massive hit in terms of brightness (they’re only 1,200 nits) and local dimming zones (200 or 240, respectively, for the 65- and 75-inch sizes). That said, the regular P-Series Quantum is cheaper than the P-Series Quantum X, and you can save about $300 by choosing the lower-specc’d displays.
All the TVs in the range except for the 85-inch P-Series Quantum X will be available in late June and the latter will be available in the fall around the time of the Vizio OLED.
US Model Names: Vizio P65QX-H1 ($1,499), Vizio P75QX-H1 ($1,999), Vizio P85QX-H1 ($2,999), Vizio P65Q9-H1 ($1,199), Vizio P75Q9-H1 ($1,699)
Read our review: Vizio P-Series Quantum X

Vizio M-Series (Q8 and Q7)
As you step further down the lineup, things become even more complicated - for example, like last year you’ll find two different versions of the M-Series that are wildly different. Both only have a 60Hz native refresh rate and use the IQ Active image processor, but that’s where the similarities end.
The better of the two series is the Vizio M-Series Q8 that’s only available in either a 55- or a 65-inch screen size. Both have 90 contrast control zones, far less than the P-Series but far more than the M-Series Q7 models, and use the IQ Active image processor instead of the IQ Ultra that you’d find in the higher-end models.
Then there’s the Vizio M-Series Q7 that comes in 50-, 55- and 65-inch sizes that use 16 or 30 contrast control zones. They too use the IQ Active image processor and according to the specs provided by Vizio, hit between 400 and 600 nits of peak brightness. That said, they’re ultra affordable and will likely sell super well during Black Friday this year.
US Model Names: Vizio M55Q8-H1($549), Vizio M65Q8-H1 ($749), Vizio M50Q7-H1 ($399), Vizio M55Q7-H1 ($499), Vizio M65Q7-H1 ($699)
Vizio V-Series
In case you missed the memo, the V-Series stands for value. It’s Vizio’s catchall term to describe any TV that it feels like fits into that framework, and therefore is comprised of a number of different models, all of which use full array lighting and the IQ Active processor.
The good news is that all the TVs below support four types of HDR (HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG) and while they’re not the most advanced in terms of specs, offers a 70-inch screen size that’s only $659 brand-new. It’s a crazy deal and is available starting today.
US Model Names: Vizio V405 ($229), Vizio V435 ($279), Vizio V505X ($299), Vizio V555 ($339), Vizio V585 ($349), Vizio V605 ($399), Vizio V655-H9 ($469), Vizio V705-H3 ($659), Vizio V755-H4 ($799).

Or for a more authentic experience, make your way to Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, where you’ll be hard pressed to find a bar or restaurant not playing the game. But you might have a hard time finding an open seat. Try Juan Bar, at 96-15 Roosevelt Ave., in Corona, which is attached to the restaurant Tortas Neza. Expect Portuguese beer specials, shrimp Mozambique and salt cod. For the more intrepid fan, there is no better spot to watch Portugal play than in Newark, New Jersey’s Ironbound District. In addition to the many bars and restaurants along Ferry Street, try Sport Club Portuguese, a neighborhood cultural center at 55 Prospect St.

Of all of the options on this strip, a go-to spot for Arab football fans is this nondescript Italian cafe; don’t expect to sip your macchiato in peace if a local team is playing. In general, a stroll down Steinway Street will reveal other hookah bars with TVs, some of which might even open early for the World Cup.
