Mm, if the tone of this book was different and WC was a series that was more willing to make characters flawed and self-destructive on purpose, I would LOVE the ring of this paragraph. Unfortunately, I feel like they're trying to frame this "former version of Ivypool" like it was a good thing.

It wasn't "courage, determination, and loyalty" that drove her to train there, those are excuses. Justifications. It was jealousy, anger, and fear. The Dark Forest exploited her weaknesses to groom her, suck her in. The fact she threw herself into danger, and no one protected her, was a BAD thing.

She was the worst possible version of herself back then, nasty and violent and terrified. She killed Antpelt on their orders, and was going to kill Flametail too. Without hesitation. It's not "falling from those days" to not be that person anymore.

So... the idea that she mauls this dog, revels in the satisfaction of sadism, and appreciates the dark-forest-red color of the blood on her claws, it would be a great passage to suggest that she was going to deal with her grief in a very self-destructive way. "Maybe I can be that cat again" could give me chills, man.

aww man i was excited that at least one other person might have been interested in pike/vina for rarepair exchange since it got nominated under three star trek shows after i nominated it in crossover, but actually the mods just put them there since my nomination was wrong. so now i'm debating whether to spend half my sign-up slots on a pairing no one wants anyway 😕

sometimes i get sad when my best friend refuses to read my favorite web novel of all time especially when the author is very pratchett inspired and then i remember that the web novel is 10 million words, only still halfway-done, and that it took me about a month of dedicated daily reading to finish.

After escaping the dogs, the adrenaline hits them all and Ivypool, Rootspring, and Dovewing start laughing hysterically. It strikes me as being the sort of thing that isn't funny in and of itself, but it's the SITUATION, you know? It's hilarious because it's not, but you're laughing anyway, when you haven't had a laugh in SO long that you can't remember the last time you did, and THAT'S what's really funny about it.

...But then your grief comes back, and you feel horrible for being able to laugh when someone else can't. And this makes you self-conscious, like you're not mourning properly, not responding in the right way. A self-inflicted gutpunch.

Overall the pacing in this SE's pretty bad, but man, this is a really nice and poignant moment. There's some good stuff in this one, so far.
