It needs data connectivity and not a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) connection to transmit voice packets. All of these describe the fact that VoIP is used to transmit voice signals to another telephone.
SIP is a powerful communication protocol that enables calling on IP-based phone lines. It is just one of the signalling protocols used to enable VoIP. A SIP trunk is digital and can be plugged into an Internet Protocol private branch exchange (IPBX) to start communication operations.
Technically, SIP defines the messages sent between endpoints, and it manages the establishment, termination and other essential constituents of a call. SIP can be used to transmit data between two or multiple endpoints.
In addition to voice calls, SIP also enables instant messaging/online chats, video conferencing, media sharing and other web-based applications.
If you are connecting an IP-PBX to a PSTN provider to route PSTN calls, this connection is termed as SIP Trunk. It then depends on the law of the land, which defines the transport medium of this connection. In India, if you are connecting to a BSO, the transport medium has to be private in the form of an MPLS or P2P link. If you are connecting to a VoIP provider, the transport medium can be the public Internet and can only be used for outgoing international calls.

La solution de standard téléphonique PABX, très courante en entreprise jusqu’à il y a encore quelques années, est en train d’évoluer. Aujourd’hui, “IPBX”, “VoIP” ont pris le relais. Et Le “cloud” aujourd’hui activement encouragée, devient peu à peu la norme. Pourquoi, comment ? Quelques repères pour s’y retrouver et choisir la meilleure solution de téléphonie à distance dans les normes actuelles.
Vers quoi le standard téléphonique PABX évolue-t-il ?
Revenons d’abord sur la notion même de standard téléphonique PABX. Le PABX, c’est un “Private Automatic Branch eXchange”, également appelé en français “autocommutateur” ou “commutateur téléphonique privé”. C’est une solution technique qui permet de mettre en place un réseau télécom local à l’entreprise. Mais aussi, il permet de créer des numéros courts, de générer des renvois d’appels, d’organiser des conférences (conf calls), d’effectuer des transferts d’appels. Mais encore, il met en place un pré-décroché et/ou une messagerie.
Jusqu’à récemment, le système téléphonique de la plupart des entreprises était basé sur la technologie standard téléphonique PABX. C’était le seul moyen de connecter tous les postes internes entre eux, mais aussi de les relier à l’extérieur. Désormais, les PABX sont devenus obsolètes. En effet, l’apparition de nouvelles solutions logicielles de communication offrent infiniment plus de services et de possibilités grâce au cloud, et à moindre coût.
IPBX, VoIP, ToIP : les nouvelles solutions de la téléphonie d’entreprise
Ces dernières années, le système a évolué vers le système IPBX (Internet Private Branch Exchange)ou PBX-VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocole ou encore ToIP (Telephony on Internet Protocole). Internet est utilisé pour transmettre les appels et envoyer les données de l’entreprise vers l’extérieur. Pour l’expliquer de manière simple : l’IPBX est un PABX utilisant le protocole IP. Avec ce système, la voix des appelants et de leurs interlocuteurs passe donc par le réseau internet. Puis elle arrive sur le standard téléphonique de l’entreprise. Cette technique permet d’accéder, à moindre coût, à un plus grand nombre de services et fonctionnalités. Cela est particulièrement intéressant pour certains domaines d’activité comme les standards des hôtels par exemple, ou encore le standard téléphonique en milieu hospitalier (cliniques, hôpitaux, cabinets médicaux).
Le cloud, avenir du standard téléphonique
L’apparition du cloud a encore amélioré les choses. Il facilite l’organisation de l’entreprise. Le PBX logiciel n’est plus situé dans les locaux de l’entreprise, il est hébergé à distance (dans un data center par exemple). Il est en relation avec les téléphones VoIP de l’entreprise et avec le réseau téléphonique public par l’intermédiaire d’internet. Chaque appel passé à l’extérieur passe donc par la connexion Internet de l’entreprise.
Les avantages d’une telle solution ?
• La bande passante disponible est plus importante • Il est possible d’intégrer au réseau les personnes travaillant à distance, par exemple les télétravailleurs • Le serveur VoIP permet que la voix soit transférée d’un point à un autre • La maintenance est facilitée, notamment grâce aux nombreuses offres qui incluent des services de maintenance régulière • Ce système ne risque pas de devenir obsolète.
Les technologies IPBX ou VoIP Centrex, qui fonctionnent en mode “cloud” via internet, sont aujourd’hui des solutions intéressantes de standards virtuels pour les entreprises car elles ne les obligent plus à avoir un autocommutateur privé dans leurs locaux. Elles ont remplacé avantageusement les standards téléphoniques PABX. Le standard est en effet désormais complètement virtuel, géré par un prestataire extérieur via un cloud. Les services auxquels on accède alors sont partagés avec d’autres entreprises grâce à une mutualisation de moyens, ce qui permet de réduire les coûts de téléphonie.
Quelle solution VoIP pour votre entreprise ?
Le choix de la solution dépend de 3 facteurs principaux. • Architecture existante : Si votre téléphonique repose encore sur un système PABX, le Cloud n’est certainement pas la priorité ! • Financement et écriture comptable : Les dépenses IT passe d’un investissement à amortir à des dépenses d’exploitation ! • Maîtrise du système informatique : L’externalisation en mode cloud est perçue par les DSI comme une perte de contrôle du système informatique. Cependant des ressources interne dédiées IT seront toujours nécessaire pour gérer toute l’infrastructure.
