A new research has found that the neuronal presence of the biomarker Phosphorylated Alpha-Synuclein (P-Syn) in the brain and skin of Parkinson's patients distinguishes them from normal people.

This allows early detection of Parkinson's disease. This research study is published in the 'Journal of Parkinson's Disease'.

According to study author Maria Pia Giannocaro of Biomedical and Neuroscience at the University of Bologna in Italy, "Research in the context of Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders has led to the discovery of treatments capable of inhibiting the pathological proteins responsible for various diseases."

Our laboratory, led by Professor Rocco Leguri and Dr. DiCenzo Donadio, has spent nearly a decade searching for biomarkers of Parkinson's and related diseases.

We wanted to differentiate between progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and carticobasal syndrome (CBS) from Parkinson's or other similar diseases, so that they could be used in clinical trials.

Researchers say preliminary findings suggest that Parkinson's patients can be screened for through skin biopsy (examination of live tissue). Parkinson's is a disease that affects a patient's ability to move, balance and control the muscles.
