[During the tone meeting for Army of Ghosts and Doomsday, while Tooth and Claw is being filmed downstairs] What's the tone, Mr. Davies?

Russell: "'Classy' is the word. These episodes are very, very sci-fi, which always scares me most in Doctor Who. God help us, we'll have ten men in suits who can't see, and four men in pepper pots who can't see, firing invisible guns...!

Suddenly, there's a loud crash from down on the studio floor. 

"What's that?" frowns exec producer Julie Gardner.

"Three-hundred quid," says Ed Thomas, production designer and deadpan chuckle-smith.

Beetlejuice the character is probably LGBTQAI+

Unlike Dracula where several modern depictions are canonically confirmed as pansexual (Marvel comics, Dario Argento's Dracula, Frank Wildhorn's Dracula das musical...) Beetlejuice is still an ambiguous character in that nothing about his sexual identity has been officially confirmed. I believe this character Betelgeuse (Pronounced as Beetle Juice) is LGBTQAI+ even though his infatuation with Lydia appears to be heterosexual. Disclaimer: Some of this IS based on stereotyping. I am a gender-nonconforming, panromantic, demisexual so please know I do not mean offense by this. Beetlejuice is not a very politically correct character so he may even appreciate the stereotyping. Here are the clues. 1. According to Tim Burton, himself, he originally wanted Sammy Davis Jr. to play the character of Beetlejuice. Sammy Davis Jr. was openly bisexual in a time when it was not common place to be openly bisexual. And every time he acted, he either played himself, or someone who was at least implied to be bisexual.

2. There is a scene in the first Beetlejuice movie where he kisses Otho on the cheek or at least acts as if he's going to. This may be Bugs Bunny-esque but Otho, the character, is gay, even though it's not out-right said. He has several implied gay traits that were stereotypes of the 1980s such as being an interior designer from New York City.

3. In the Beetlejuice animated series Beetlejuice (Betelgeuse) has a persona named Betty Juice. Though Beetlejuice can turn invisible or shapeshift into virtually anything, he chooses to be a girl to tag along with Lydia and her friends, Bertha and Prudence. He doesn't just do this once or twice. He does it repeatedly. He loves being Betty Juice and is very confident as her. She even has a catchphrase. "Never fear, Betty Juice is here!"

4. Beetlejuice had a song and dance stage show in Universal studios called Beetlejuice's Rock 'n roll Graveyard Review. I know that doesn't necessarily make him queer but just look at this fabulous costumes he magically gives the classic monsters when he enlists them for his rock band.

5. Beetlejuice got his own Broadway musical in which his own mother proves to be an antagonistic threat, he gets a redemption arc annnnd the musical was nominated for eight Tony Awards. That's pretty gay if you ask me. He even does Jazz hands.

6. Beetlejuice French kisses Adam in the Beetlejuice Broadway musical and attempts to seduce both Adam and Barbara and sexually harasses both of them too.

7. He's Italian. :-P Beetlejuice's origin is given in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice confirming that he was a graverobber about six-hundred-years-ago during the Black Death in Italy and his new bride poisoned him on his wedding night, intending to kill him and then feast on his soul for immortality, so before the poison could take effect he hacked her to pieces. During the flashback narration he mentions that he was into some messed up stuff but even he has his limits.

8. All versions of Beetlejuice love a good song and dance number. Confirmed by his reaction to the Maitlands' Banana Boat Song (Day-o) number in the original movie, the song and dance he and Lydia do in the pilot episode of the Beetlejuice animated series (Critter Sitters), and several other episodes, including one with a punk band. Beetlejuice's Rock 'n Roll Graveyard Review Universal Studios stage show, and out-right said in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

9. The original script writer and the producer were both gay. I may add more to this list later.

Better / Worse / Different.

After a longish bike ride I came home to shower, and rest on the couch. Hey perfect time to try the streaming thing.

To avoid the dreaded "always playing the same thing" combined with my desire to nap, I set the system to the new toy input and let it warm up with Miles Davis from the phone. I did nap for a bit then decided to try listening to two albums I am very familiar with when I woke up.

Linda Ronstadt "Lush Life" was first. Frankly I do not like that they add bonus tracks. They should have a box to tick if you want those, I just want the album as I recall it. Still it sounded different.

Maybe if I spoke audiophile jargon better I could characterize my impression. It is good sound, but different. Everything is clean and clear, but something is missing. It may be noise actually. Or it may be they remixed the sound a touch. I think the sound is flatter lacking some depth or ambiance, which being a studio thing is probably artificial. Hey it could be that the phono section goes through a tube and this is pure solid state. Don't know.

Next up was Paul Simon's "There goes Rhyming Simon". One of my favorite "test tracks" is the song Tenderness. That one has a backing group of singers that range from deep bass baritone to high tenor falsetto. Off my LP they stretch across the room with height and depth of almost spooky scale. Of the Apple Music Stream lossless it was flatter and impressed with no such scale. Again remixed?

Either one has excellent sound from bass guitar to the metallic ting of a acoustic guitar or the metal of cymbals. Nothing is done badly. Something is missing. The wonder is it something my phono system adds.

One definite advantage of streams is finding lost music. I had Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints CD. I lost it when a car CD player ate it. That ruined both the stock CD player and the disk. I was not able to play it very many times so never "learned it'". I played it on the apple music thing and enjoyed it immensely. He tapped into the African sound of Brazilian music and even had some of the South African musicians from Graceland on it. It is very visceral. Lots of drums as in those giant samba bands. Some must have been recorded outside as those are big groups.

OK as it sits like so many things Streaming is fine as a source. Is it better, hmmm.... It is different? Yes.

The streamer is the Bluesound Node-nano. I use the stock RCA cables, maybe I should braid up some of my own?

I was streaming lossless ALAC from my phone over my wireless network. (not Blutooth)

The rest of the system is the ARC SP 14 preamp, the Franken-Amp, and my invisible speakers.

It is not at all bad.

Unseen – The story of invisible people

Unseen is one of 10 games made on the Criar Jogos Game Jam at São Paulo. Tells the story of a ghost that walks through São Paulo City. In the middle of the walk, he comes across people you need to help.

The game was made in 3 days by nebula studio at Criar Jogos Game Jam 2024. It was developed taking the theme “invisible people” that was proposed at the game jam.

Davy Lyons presents: "One To One"

 Davy Lyons' brand new single and video. It's the latest single taken from his highly acclaimed second album, 'The Human Factor'

Accompanying the release is a mesmerising videoclip directed by María Lorente Becerra, which promises to be a visual masterpiece in its own right. Set against the backdrop of Barcelona and the picturesque Delta del Ebro, the 'One to One' video features Lyons himself alongside actress Marta Rodrigo Díaz. Lyons previously showcased his acting talents in Adrià Pagès Molina's feature film "Solo Arrojaron,” released this year. 'One to One' is a soul-stirring ballad that explores the intricacies of various relationships - be it with a friend, a lover, a deity, or oneself. Its poignant lyrics and evocative melody create an emotional resonance that lingers long after the song ends.

In the video, viewers are introduced to two enigmatic characters, simply referred to as Him and Her. Despite being strangers, they share an inexplicable connection, as if tethered by invisible threads. Their parallel lives unfold simultaneously on screen, revealing shared desires and shared sorrows. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes evident that these two characters are intertwined in ways they cannot comprehend. There's a palpable sense of yearning and mutual dependence that transcends rationality. Ultimately, as the song reaches its crescendo, Him and Her fade into the ether, leaving behind a sense of wistful melancholy. Yet the vibrant landscapes of Barcelona and the bustling cityscape endure, unchanged by the ephemeral presence of these spectral figures.

DAVY LYONS BIO:

Davy Lyons is an Irish songwriter, musician, poet, and actor. Family gatherings in his childhood, where music was always vital, are the root of his creative endeavours. His first dream was to become a professional footballer. Having completed a First-Class Honours Masters degree in law at University College Dublin, Lyons abandoned the gavel for the guitar and began a spiritual journey across Europe that brought him to live and make wine in a Tuscan castle and stay for four months in the mythic Parisian bookshop, Shakespeare and Company, which has welcomed wandering writers such as Allen Ginsberg, James Baldwin, and Anaïs Nin.

Having lived in a camper van called Roger with three bearded artists for three sweaty months, he hitchhiked from Paris to Barcelona and settled finally in the Catalan city known as The Rose of Fire. There he played on the street, testing new songs and dodging the police. Busking brought him friends, money, and an understanding of how a good song is able to stand on its own, in its purest form, with guitar and voice, or no guitar at all. It was not all pleasant though, while busking he had eggs, water, and once a bag of shite thrown at him from balconies. You can’t please everybody. 

In Barcelona, Lyons formed a band with some of the finest musicians in the city, and they began playing free folk, completely in the moment, with no song being the same from concert to concert. Their live shows developed a reputation as intense, binding, and unique experiences for the audience, an intimate journey where words and melodies come together, where silences are allowed to reverberate. Sound poems written with the fountain pen of Lyons’ soul with brushstrokes of folk, jazz, and gypsy added by the band.

In Angel Sound Studio, they recorded “Evidence”, Lyons’ debut album, produced by Arthur Jeffes, frontman of Penguin Cafe. The album was released in 2019 with Catalan label Delirics, and was launched with sold-out shows in Barcelona, and in his hometown, Wexford, the sunny south-east of Ireland. Catalan music magazine, Enderrock, said: Evidence is ten songs made for introspective people, those who wish to scratch inside without fear of finding deep sadness or divine beauty. The best of the album is how silence breathes.

The following year he began recording demos with Irish producer, David Duffy, in his home studio next to the Hare Krishna temple in Barcelona’s gothic quarter. Those demos form the basis of Lyons’ second record, “The Human Factor”, recorded in Vertigo Studios in Llinars del Vallès, and to be released in Feb 2022 with Dutch label, King Forward Records. Lyons bonded with label founder, Frank Bond, over an eel sandwich while on tour in the Netherlands. The album represents lyrical and musical growth for an artist who always submits himself to the hammer and anvil of metre and rhyme.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Lyons has just finished shooting for a feature-length Catalan-produced movie, where he plays the lead role in a story of friendship and grief. For the release of his first book, he is currently compiling a selection of poetry and prose sent over the last four years as part of the newsletters delivered every Sunday for his Patreon.

He is influenced by artists such as Jacques Brel, Francis Bacon, Nina Simone, John McGahern, Mick Mulcahy, Kae Tempest, and The Pecker Dunne.
