mark vs cecil is such a banger conflict bc it's literally just two people pushing each other's trauma buttons in the exact wrong way (from mark's pov it's 'authority figure i trusted to guide me is keeping an Evil Secret from me oh my god holy shit' and from cecil's pov it's 'loose canon viltrumite who has the power to destroy the world is turning against me oh my god holy shit') and freaking each other out with their respective panic to the point where a situation that really should not be a big deal at all just escalates and escalates until it blows up in both their faces and GRAAHHHHHH

my favorite moment in invincible is during the 5 year time skip (INVINCIBLE COMIC SPOILERS)
i do agree that the time travel was done in a somewhat awkward way and that if the series ever gets to that scene, it should try to change it for the better. but-
but that moment, man.
“saving the world would mean killing my daughter”. mark is given the chance to fix everything, to save everyone. but he doesn't take it, because he has a little kid back at home
this is mark grayson, at his most selfish. this is the hero deciding to not be heroic. it would mean killing my daughter, he says, and It's surprised that he didn't choose the more heroic path. he would trade the world for his daughter. he wouldn't trade his daughter for the world
he chooses to let everyone die again. he chooses to not fix it, to not save them. he doesn't regret it (he would do it again in a heartbeat)

One of the things I hope for Season 3 is to see Mark reading Nolan´s books.
Yes, I know it would be redundant because the show resolved that plot thread in the same episode vs. the comics, where there is a bigger gap between Mark realizing that they reveal the viltrumite´s weaknesses (#35) and Allen showing up (#43). So they had Mark read them many times, to the point William points it out, and Mark explains that he’s doing it to figure out how to defeat the Viltrumites. Once Allen arrives and scans the books, Mark stops reading them.
Tumblr media
However, I still want to see show!Mark read them not only to learn how to hurt viltrumites but also because to him this is the closest thing he´ll probably get to know the "real" Nolan; because one of the differences that strike me the most about both Marks is how uninformed about Nolan the show´s version is in comparison to his comics counterpart.
In the comics, Mark had an entire issue of Nolan telling his story before their fight he beat him up (literally it takes place between "We need to talk" and "So be it") and later in Thraxa he gets another talk with his dad where some of his questions got answered and gained more insight (he even learns that Nolan is his dad´s actual name, only pronounced differently and what was Nolan´s thought process during the fight)
Show!Mark knows so little about Nolan, because a lot of those moments were cut. He only knows the viltrumites are space conquerors that killed each other to "remove the weak", that Nolan decided to wait until Mark got his powers to act; that viltrumites don’t really cross with other species and that Nolan regrets the beat down.

Finally reading the Invincible comics (I watched the show first), I think I’m gonna liveblog my reactions.
So far I’ve read up to the end of Issue #13, which is where season 1 ends in the animated series. And boy do I have thoughts. Spoilers below the cut.
1. William referring to himself as a “chick magnet” gave me whiplash
2. Eve cancelled for slut-shaming multiple women???
3. Black Samson had a butler?????
4. “I can always produce more offspring” It just doesn’t quite hit the same, does it?
Fascinating to see all the ways they made the show more politically correct. I am enjoying the comics, but I can see what people mean when they say the show has improved on a lot of things (not just representation-wise but also story-wise and narratively). That subway scene? WAY more devastating and impactful in the show than it was in the comics.
Plus, Rex is significantly more obnoxious in the show and I LOVE that for him, please let him shout and be annoying. Let him be a jerk outside of the fact he cheated on Eve. And yet at the same time, the show also makes him way more sympathetic?? Which I’m very much here for. In the comics, it’s just “Hey babe I’m cheating on you now lol”
In the show, we get to see that buildup of Rex’s jealousy and insecurity towards Mark (even though it is hinted at that he had a problem with cheating before Mark came into the picture). We get to see a more human side of Rex, an ugly side but a relatable one nonetheless. You can at least see where he’s coming from, even though he’s in the wrong.
I love that the show explores a deeper connection between Mark and Debbie than in the comics. That conversation between them on the back porch is everything. It adds a lot more weight to that final confrontation.
The one area where I think the show stumbled a bit, is how they handled Cecil. In the comics, he is formally introduced way later than in the show, only after Mark gets beaten into a mountainside by his father. In the show, Cecil is introduced right away, but… he doesn’t really have anything meaningful to do, does he? Like think about it. Nothing he does beyond the comic material really impacts the outcome of that final fight. There is no reason for him to come into the story as early as he does. And I hate to say this because I adore Cecil and his animated adaptation got me feeling some kinda way. I love every single moment that he is onscreen. I just wish, if they were going to make him a more major player throughout the first season, that they would’ve given him a way to impact the plot in a more meaningful way. Because otherwise it makes all his precautions and super-government-spy shenanigans look like so much bluster. Who knows, maybe my opinion on this will change when I read the second volume.
So yeah that’s my unfiltered reaction. Knowing me, I might tack more onto this later because I am prone to forgetting things, also I could write multiple essays about each of these characters.

something about sinclair working in an abandoned clock tower... trying to buy more time for the human race... working against the aging process, death, the natural progression of time on the body... and being the only one in this scene (barring kate, who may or may not be affected by her powers) with a regular human lifespan
Tumblr media
because he can't escape that. if he can postpone his own death, it won't be long enough to make a difference in... their world. he's only human, after all. thousands of years later there will be nothing left of him but the things he built to keep others alive (whether or not they want to be).

me when
me when rudy spent the first thirty years of his life stuck in a tank, finally being able to experience all the things he couldn't and falling in love after stealing someone's face and name, only to end up stuck back in a tank after disgracing that same person's name and face

Ive seen some people talking about Anissa from invincible since she has just made her appearance in the show. And the knee-jerk reaction of people who have read to the comics to dogpile on those who think shes cool or hot or whatever because of the SA she commits later in the story. But i would like to point out that right now in the show she hasn’t done anything like that yet. Most viewers of the show have not seen the comics and so judging people on liking her right now is a bit unfair.
While i know that as someone who’s seen the comics its tempting to spoil aspects of the story when you see ppl being “down bad” or whatever for a piece of shit, we definitely shouldn’t do that to ppl who have not seen the comics. I dont love the opinion that many ppl tend to hold that “it’s not spoilers. The book/comic/manga has been out for years.” If someone prefers to view a story without knowing what’s going to happen, we, as people who have read the comics, should respect that.
People are allowed to enjoy villains, and Anissa is a compelling one. Once we get to that point in the story, people opinions will change. Until then, they are allowed to judge a character by what they’ve seen in the show rather than what they’ve been told will happen.

can i admit something to u guys. heavy comic spoilers for s3
i always thought rex sacrificing himself to kill an alternate invincible by "supercharging his skeleton" or whatever was the stupidest thing in the world considering the magnitude of explosions mark and nolan had been shown to be able to survive without a scratch. so i really hope they find a way to upgrade his death in the show bc it was so immersion-breaking in the comic that i hardly felt anything

I recently re-read the Invincible comics, and wow it’s kind of crazy how much the show movies around events for the better.
(Minor comic spoilers ahead)
In the comics, the whole thing with Robot regrowing a new body happens after the Omni-Man fight. Like way after. And the mission to Mars happens after too. There are probably some more examples that I’m blanking on right now.
I think it makes way more sense for these events to happen before the Omni-Man fight. It makes everything feel so…developed. More so than the comics. I don’t really know how to describe it.
Anyways I’m hyped for Part 2 of Season 2!

Okay so I finally made my bingo card. Most of these are in reference to Robert Kirkman saying he wanted to explore some new ideas in season three, I wish I could find where he said that but I can't. Some of these I think will happen and some of them are me throwing stuff at the wall. Spoilers!
