Tenko and Kacchan - Shigaraki and Bakugou as two misunderstood children
Now that we’re in the vestige/memory mindscape for MHA's ending, and Izuku and Shigaraki are sharing memories, this is an analysis I wrote about the connections between Shigaraki and Bakugou, and how I believe Katsuki’s role in this finale will be as another vital mirror for Shigaraki to look at.
[Can also be found on twitter]
Tumblr media
Shigaraki and Bakugou have both been denoted uniquely with some similar words/traits:
Overt Childishness/Childlike behavior
Short fuses/tempers
Arrogance
An abundance of power/strength - In general having gross/unappealing personalities etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This makes sense.
Because in the original ending where Dk/Bk come together to defeat Shigaraki (as laid out by Heroes Rising) - it’s fair to say the original plan was an story where Izuku and Katsuki alone embodied what society needed as the new foundation for change.
Tumblr media
This obviously isn’t the case now, but theoretically it seems like the plan was to make Shigaraki too far gone. His ideals mixed with an enjoyment of destruction.
However, in an ending where he is not, and we’re not getting out of this situation without him being saved, the goals for a new foundation are the same with a different outlook - just the same players.
Shigaraki is seeking to be understood, first and foremost. And he is at the point where he genuinely believes no one can, even if they seek to - however it’s funny because equivalently he severely misunderstands Izuku and Kacchan in his pursuits to be seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s worth noting that timeline wise - immediately following Deku/Kacchan vs All Might, we transition into the formation of the League of Villains, where Shigaraki is contemplating his interest in Izuku.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He leaves to then go experiment with this interest with the mall, where Izuku disappoints but also inspires him to keep going.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prior to this, he had left the Toga and Dabi hanging with an answer about whether or not he would accept them, and upon being told again the reason he is not being seen he is not understood, upon being told he has no ideals, his next plan of action was to get Bakugou.
To me, it means something that Shigaraki sought Bakugou out where the other characters had to come to him. Back when these chapters were released, there was a genuine belief amongst readers that Katsuki would fold and join the villains.
Tumblr media
This assumption was being made by both Shigaraki, the reporters in the story, and the readers at large despite nothing about Katsuki indicating this but his personality - Shigaraki just happened to make the same mistake readers were making.
When Shigaraki looked at Izuku, he just saw another hero with lofty ideals who was not interested in putting that action to practice with things he did not understand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However when Shigaraki looked at Bakugou, he saw someone he resonated with being suppressed, forced to change who he is, and unprotected by society at large. Remember, prior to the sports festival the only other thing Katsuki was known for was the sludge villain incident.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even now, he looks to Bakugou as a mirror of himself, even when AFO was trying to suppress him, the things that started to wake Tenko up were things people said/did on behalf of Katsuki, seeing all the pro heroes work so hard to protect someone already gone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I were to give a tentative soft take on the early read, Shigaraki’s failure at being understood by Izuku and Katsuki despite seeking them out (and with the original ending put into context) it seems like the original idea was perhaps that sometimes death is another way of saving, and that Katsuki and Izuku were the main symbolic proof that society can be better when you understand one another.
Now that is clearly being challenged and slightly inverted.
Katsuki/Izuku are still serving the purpose of being the proof and evidence of what change and understanding can do, but now it’s just not as insular.
To me, it’s not a coincidence OFA was borne in the helm of a misunderstanding. Yoichi, the one outcast, suppressed, and unprotected, is still reached out to by Kudou - because he looks like someone who needed saving.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furthermore, Kudou is the first person to sacrifice himself in the bid to save Shigaraki, betting everything on Izuku who he only grew to understand more after seeing his relationship to himself and Katsuki. Kudou and Shigaraki had similar ideas about him.
Tumblr media
Katsuki is consistently the thread that leads to understanding Izuku.
And so while in a lot of ways I do think Shigaraki is going to be able to see Izuku’s childhood and empathize with his own treatment in society, I do think it’d be easy to write it off as Izuku just being a better person than he is, causing him to doubling down anyways.
However, Katsuki is evidence that your origins can be treacherous. You can be a horrible, simple, and destructive child, and still come out of it loved. Katsuki is the strongest evidence everyone has that Izuku isn’t bluffing, both Izuku's persistent and Katsuki's growth.
Tumblr media
The biggest difference between Katsuki and Shigaraki is that Katsuki was blessed to have kept love in his life despite everything, and his ideals are predicated on this.
Tenko got to experience this only for a blip in time before being left behind and groomed. Izuku in all his craziness is presenting the opportunity for Tenko to remember it’s possible for him to have love in his life as well without taking the world down with him.
Tumblr media
He just can’t do that without seeing the clearest example of that dedication in action with one of the first characters he'd managed to resonate with.

as we bring majora to a close, i want to state here for the record that I 100% believe in the Link is Dead theory. i don't care if it's edgy, i think it's incredibly relevant thematically both for this individual game and as part of the series. just look at how clearly the 5 main areas align with the pop culture stages of grief
Clock Town: Denial. the people of clock town, despite the moon clearly bearing down on them, are clearly avoiding the obvious danger, either because they're wrapped up in their own issues or are more focused on the need for the carnival to go well
Woodfall: Anger. The deku king, having lost his daughter, is lashing out with rage. he blames an innocent for his daughter's disappearance, unwilling to look at another solution because his rage in blinding him
Snowhead: Bargaining. Darmani, who died trying to save his village, can only think of that. he tries to do anything to save it, even as a spirit, working in any way he can to prevent more death, and begging link for aid when it's clear that's his only hope
Great Bay: Depression. Lulu is so distraught over the loss of her children that she can't even speak. she stands in one spot, despondent, completely unable to cope
Ikana Canyon: Acceptance. Sharp and flat, and the many other undead of the canyon, are at last put to rest by link and able to move on. This is to say nothing of the stone tower temple, which quite literally inverts itself to lead up into the sky, giving link a weapon of light
and that's not all majora has to say about death! the game is soaked with it! the three main masks of the game all contain the spirit of someone who has died. the threat of death from the moon is a constant discussion, believed or not. anju is worried that kafei's disappearance means he's dead. the main plot coupons are the remains of the bosses you've killed. the name of the land, Termina, refers to an endpoint. and of course you cannot forget the most famous line in the game, "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"
Link, the Hero of Time, after saving Hyrule twice over from Ganondorf, went on a personal quest to find a friend. He died on that quest. In battle? disease? an accident? it doesn't really matter. Majora's Mask is the story of link finding peace by saving the people of Termina from one last threat, which allows him to pass on. it's not a happy ending for a hero who risked everything, but sometimes, that's just the way life works out

So before the next chapter translation/recap drops, I wanted to ask what you think of Bakugo very likely being AFO's final opponent? I didn't really see that coming. The rival is always there, but they usually team up with the MC for the final fight or aren't part of it (Vegeta during all the DBZ saga final villains, Sasuke at the end of Shipuuden). AFO isn't even Bakugo's personal villain, like Dabi is Todoroki's and Himiko is Uraraka's. I'm trying to wrap my head around it so it's more satisfying, but while it's REALLY AWESOME, I'm not feeling the *personal* stakes and ngl I spent half the time wondering if Deku would swoop in. I'm guessing he won't, final battle Shigaraki vs Deku, but yeah.
I think it's an interesting subversion of the usual final boss tropes. it's true that AFO and Bakugou don't have much in the way of personal history. they lack the tragic family ties of Dabi and Shouto, or the frequent homoerotic encounters of Toga and Ochako. Horikoshi clearly went a different route here.
that being said, there are a few things I do like about the setup. first, I really like that Bakugou chose Kid For One to be his final villain (and then inverted things on top of that -- you're not my final boss, I'm your final boss, lol). it's very much in line with his usual stubbornness and singlemindedness. everyone else -- Izuku, Shouto, and Ochako -- were sort of unwillingly dragged into their conflicts by fate. but Bakugou wanted a final boss so much that when life didn't conveniently hand him one, he went out and DEMANDED one. literally DIYed his own. that's the most Bakugou thing ever tbh.
second, I like the recurring theme of AFO creating his own demons. he's so powerful that the only thing that can bring him down is his own hubris. he accidentally created OFA by trying to dominate his baby brother. he tormented the OFA users for centuries only to be mutilated by a royally pissed-off All Might. and he has been snidely dismissive of Bakugou on multiple occasions throughout the manga, which is certainly looking like one hell of a mistake right now. not just because he missed the opportunity to kill him off on earlier occasions, but also because we all know that the more you ignore Kacchan, the more determined he is to prove you wrong.
third, I like that AFO is the one who apparently has personal trauma and not the other way around. even if the extent of his trauma is just, "you look like the guy I really hate!!", lol. it's unexpected and mildly amusing and I enjoy it.
and lastly, while I'm probably not super qualified to weigh in on this (seeing as there's a big chunk of the Deku vs. Tomura/AFO fight which I still haven't read yet, so I don't know how much ground has been covered already), I'm not so sure that this is the actual final battle. as you mentioned, those usually involve the rival teaming up with the MC against a single final villain. and neither Tomura nor Kid For One is giving me genuine final boss vibes tbh. I think AFO, and not Tomura, will be the final "final boss", but I'm guessing it will be a different version of AFO. either the AFO currently taking up residence in Tomura's head, or, potentially, the one possibly hanging out in Deku's.
either way though, that also means the final phase of this battle will likely take place not in the real world, but inside the OFA/AFO Mojo Dojo Casa Realm. and I think it will be Deku, Katsuki (since I'm convinced he also has OFA), and Tomura (plot twist) united against AFO. which I think would make for a much stronger final battle than the current setup. we were promised an ending which would surpass Heroes Rising in epicness, after all. a simple Deku vs. Tomura would hardly cut it, especially with Deku having already pushed himself to his limits and revealed all of his current OFA tricks that we know about. gotta be more to it.
so yeah, those are my thoughts. I'm enjoying the current antics, but I do think they are miniboss antics and not final boss ones. any finale that doesn't involve multiple OFA users teaming up against a single AFO wielder is going to feel a bit like it missed the point. it's literally in the name, lol. we need the "all" versus the "one", or else all that foreshadowing goes to waste. that's my hope at any rate.

If someone started a blog named quirkwarlock and their profile pic was deku but inverted colours and they gave bad quirk advice instead of good and they reblogged your posts to disagree with them do you think that would be a good bit
I mean, that sounds like it'd work for a small joke, but I'm not sure if it be worth the effort of making an entire blog out of. I'm a pretty niche in the grand scheme of things and I think it would just confuse people more often then not. And making a blog just to disagree with me seems like joking and more like a hating. One that is equal amounts impressive and concerning. I will say that I am curious what exactly "bad advice" someone would give. "Yeah, no, you should totally take notes from "New Order". It's not that powerful."

bellow the fire into my deadened lungs
chapter 2 excerpt — mother/son reunion read full story here
After 3 weeks of playing house with Keigo, Shouto asks, “Touya-nii. I have the day off today, and I want to take you somewhere. Will you come?”
Touya’s arm suspends in the air as he looks at Shouto like he’s lost his mind, mid-bite of his lunch, “I’m... literally a wanted criminal?”
Shouto studies his face for a moment, blank mismatched eyes not giving away a thought, before he says, “Your hair has grown and you've washed most of the dye out. ‘Dabi-the-Villain’ isn't known for an inverted balayage. The rest can be covered with a face mask and sunglasses. Wear one of Hawks-san’s hoodies.”
Touya hums, suspicious at the adamancy that his brother is showing, “Where are you trynna take me, Shou?”
“It’s a surprise.”
“Fuck off,” Touya barks a laugh, biting into the sandwich he’s halfway done with.
“Touya,” Shouto steps in front of him, and his eyes narrow, “I know you just got better, but don’t make me knock you out.”
“Not very heroic of ya, baby bro,” Touya stuffs the last remaining bite in his mouth, the stretch straining his staples a bit, but nothing he can’t usually handle.
“Yes, well,” Shouto smirks, evilly, “I’d argue it’s actually pretty on-point with the current state of hero society today. Wouldn’t you think?”
Touya just pinches the bridge of his nose with two fingers. He can’t believe his brother grew up like this — he reminds him of himself.
‘He’s a little asshole.’
“Fine.”
They successfully manage to get into a taxi without raising any suspicions, probably because their taxi driver keeps raving how his brother, “Really saved my ass the other day, kid, you’re going to be a great hero! Your friend, though, he’s a bit… abrasive, but he seems like he has the potential to be a good guy. Saves people with a frown on his face, but doesn’t make too much of a mess. The green-guy, though — ‘Deku’, I think? Don’t get me wrong, he’s very strong! But the crying is a bit… Well, you’re all still kids.”
However, when the car stops and Touya sees exactly where his brother has taken him, his flight-or-set-himself-on-fire instincts start to kick in.
“Shou, what the fuck.”
Shouto grabs his hand and hauls him out of the cab, his strength non-comparable to Touya’s, and he is not going to burn his brother again — not after seeing the healed over mess Shouto’s stupidly heroic actions cost him.
“We’re going.”
Touya digs his feet into the concrete, “What the fuck — No, she’s going to — ”
“ — She deserves to know. You deserve to see her.”
Touya deflates.
Before he knows it, they’re both standing in front of a white door with his mother’s name engraved across a gold plaque.
“She’s gonna hate me.”
Shouto shakes his head, “She talks about you all the time, Touya-nii. She mourns you, all the time.”
Touya pinches his nose in frustration, “I’m not the son she mourns, anymore. Don’t you get that?”
“Yeah,” Shouto says stubbornly, “The son she mourns doesn’t exist because he’s literally not dead,” his brother knocks on the door before Touya even has a chance to change his mind.
A slightly muffled, painfully familiar, high-toned, “It’s open,” comes from the other side, and Shouto slides the door open and pushes Touya inside.
Touya freezes.
His mother doesn’t look a day older than when he’d last seen her, over a decade ago, but at the same time, she doesn’t look like his mother at all.
This woman sits on a slightly messy bed with her feet propped up and ankles crossed, reading some brightly colored book, wearing oversized clothing with her white hair twisted in some kind of clip.
This woman is relaxed. She’s content, happy, and comfortable.
Her shoulders have sloped down, no longer carrying a burdened fear.
“Oh?” She puts down her book and starts to lift herself off her bed, “Shouto, you brought a new friend?”
“Sort of.”
Touya can’t take this. His hands are sweating in the pockets of his hoodie and his heart is beating so loud in his ears, every sound dulling into an underwater muffle.
“Are you alright, dear?” His mother’s face is suddenly so close to his. Her eyebrows are tilted up in concern — such fucking familiar concern — and Touya notices the small gathering of crows-feet at the end of her eyes she’s accumulated this past decade.
His hands are moving, one pulling the face mask down and the other taking the sunglasses off. He clutches the items in his hands, needing something to hold onto as his mother’s grey eyes widen at the sight of his face.
Her mouth gapes and something inside Touya’s chest absolutely breaks, ‘I knew it, I fucking knew it, she’s horrified, disgusted, I’m disgusting, I knew it, no, I knew it —’
Cool and soft pressure on his cheeks interrupts his thoughts, a thumb trembling across the staples under his eyes, “Touya?” his mother’s voice is a breath in disbelief, that same thumb traveling to the side of his nose.
Touya had never put his nose studs back in.
He doesn’t even register the clatter of sunglasses dropping to the floor as his own scarred hands encircle his mother’s wrists, his throat feeling so fucking dry as he cracks out, “Hey, Mama.”
His mother wails in absolute glee, “Touya!” and engulfs him in the coolest hug that ever warmed his core.
Peals of laughter ring in his ear, and the side of a wide smile presses against the healthy skin of his cheek, his mother praising the gods — "thank you, thank you, oh, Gods, thank you for bringing him back to me, my baby!"  — and tears drip onto his neckline.
When his mother pulls back, her hands return to cup the scarred skin of his face, and her broken heart reflects so clearly in her expression, “Oh, Gods, what has he done to you? What... have I let this world turn you into?”
Touya’s mouth gapes at the admission.
He has never outwardly blamed his mother for any of Enji’s actions, for what this world has twisted him into, but the smallest and ugliest parts of him would hate his mother in the dead of the night for the slightest second, his inner child pleading, ‘Why didn’t she protect me? Why does no one care enough?’
He’s older now. He knows exactly what constant abuse does to the mind, knows that escape is never so black and white, and usually feels downright impossible, but that part of him — the part of him that was abandoned by his mother, ignored and told to keep quiet, it latches to his heart like a parasite in the worst of moments.
“Mama,” He starts, “It’s not your fault.”
His mother smiles at him sadly, so fucking sadly, “Whose fault is it, if not the ones that were supposed to dedicate their lives to your protection?”
His mouth wobbles in the telltale sign of his body trying to cry, but his melted tear ducts only allow the seams under his eyes to stretch and split over his staples, and he feels the drops of wet and hot blood trail down his face, “Ma…”
Delicate and cold fingers try to wipe away the blood that drips down her son’s face, ending in translucent smears across pinked and purpled flesh.
“I should have left. I should have kicked up a fuss and gone to every police and news station and demanded  help.”
Touya only shakes his head, “They wouldn’t have listened.”
“Well, I should have tried, Touya!” His mother cries and grabs his shoulders, her head hanging in shame, “Words… There aren’t enough to describe how sorry I am,” When she looks back up at him, Touya’s throat constricts at the look of desperation that’s etched into his mother’s face, “I will carry my failed responsibility till the day I die. I will be sorry to my grave, and even beyond that.”
The mention of ‘failure’ triggers something in Touya, something that urges him to fix this mood, tend to his mother’s sadness, soothe her, “I don’t blame you, Ma,” He lies, “I forgive you, alrigh’?” Anything to ease that agonized expression off his mother’s face.
His mother starts to violently shake her head, “Don’t ever burden yourself with forgiving me, my son — my precious, wonderful boy.” Even against the deadened skin of his neck, he feels his mother’s cool touch, “I will love you anyway. I will be here for you, always.”
Hearing his mother tell him that she still loves him, after all this time, after failing, after murder and villainy, revives a part of his heart he thought long-dead, “I love you, too,” And this time he means it.
His mother smiles, “You can love me and not forgive me.”
“Well, I decide if I forgive you, and I want to.”
She brings him into another hug, “There’s no rush,” and uses all her strength to squeeze his middle, pouring all the love she has through this decade-late touch.
She asks so many questions — ‘How did this happen? Where have you been? Who helped you? Why have you returned? Who else knows?’
“Just a few people. Pro-Hero Hawks, Natsou, Shou.”
His mother’s hand never left his own since they sat down on her bed, “Not Fuyumi?”
Shouto sits on the other side of her, “No. We aren’t sure how she’ll react, if she’ll tell Father. Her intentions are always good, but she’s foolishly naive.”
“Geeze, Shou — a lil’ harsh, don’tcha think?” Not that Touya doesn’t agree but things were different for Fuyumi.
His mother sighs heavily and shakes her head in shame, “I raised Fuyumi all wrong, gave her the worst role model. I’m afraid I’ve turned her into a fixer, and women who try to fix things all the time end up in horrible situations,” She squeezes her sons’ hands and moves her head to look at both of them, “Please, don’t let that mentality consume her. Otherwise, she’ll end up here, same as me and all the other women.”
Touya’s eyebrows furrow, “Other women?”
His mouth lets out a bitter laugh, “Half of the women in here are like me. Wives told they’re hysterical. Women pushed to their breaking point, locked away and not allowed to leave until their husbands sign for their release,” and the way she says the word 'husband’  sounds like poison.
Shouto and Touya share a horrified look, anger kindling within their hearts.
A few hours later, a nurse knocks on the door to remind them that visiting hours are almost over.
Touya puts on his facemask and is about to slip the sunglasses back on when his mother cradles his face again and gently tugs him to bow his head before she presses a hard kiss to his forehead, “Survive. Do what you must. Don’t let them lock you up.”
And even though Touya nods, he’s lying again because he doesn’t know if he can see a way around it anymore, doesn’t know if he’ll ever be allowed freedom for what he’s going to do.
He’s made his decision.

BNHA Rewrite: One For All
The Quirk Itself
Possesses a nebulous sentience of its own beyond even the Vestiges.
Can drain the lifespan of its wielders, but only if they had an incompatible/insufficient Quirk Factor (Which I HC as the ‘hard drive’ that allows the proper processing of quirks).
Is remodeling Izuku’s Quirk Factor as it acclimates to him.
Facets of its past users passively manifest in the current users, such as All Might’s muscle form being an evolution of Stasis Field, his smoke being a manifestation of Scattersmoke, and his weather changing punches being a weird combo of Float & Scattersmoke’s TK properties.
‘Determination is anger given a direction and purpose.’ Attracted to anger, and subconsciously pushes its users to single-mindedly pursue their goals (eg. ‘Be the #1 hero’, ‘Hide’,) with ‘Defeat AFO’ being a constant.
Signs of the power taking root were increased versatility of Quirks & glowing eyes.
Torchbearers
1st-Yoichi Shigaraki
Bearer for 4 years
Quirk: OFA
Trans man, has beef w/ AFO over it.
Anger over his circumstances, over AFO for mishandling it while ALSO trying to take over the world.
2nd-TBD-Gearshift
Bearer for 7 years.
Quirk: Gearshift-Inertia alteration via a series of series of ‘Gears’. Could halt, double or alter the direction of kinetic energy acting upon an object, with a brief ‘overdrive’ that enhanced physical abilities.
Ex-JSDF sniper, wore a gas mask. Used Gearshift to perform trick shots
Saved Yoichi and Third during a raid on AFO’s compound, an endeavour only he survived.
3rd-N/A-Adamant
Bearer for 14 years
Quirk: Stasis Field-Manipulation of the body’s bioelectric field to maintain body in a certain state, used as a shield and healing factor.
Psuedo hero. Wore a hooded mini cape, monk clothing/armour, and wielded a bo staff.
She led the rebellion following 2nd’s death, oversaw AFO’s first defeat and the first generation of heroes.
4th-Hikage Shinomori-The Beast of Miyajima
Bearer for 25 years
Quirk: Danger Sense-Can pinpoint danger and harm towards the user, can be expanded to see all possible harm into a certain area.
‘Costume’ was a mix of rags, animal skins and military surplus body armour.
Technically a villain, fought government agents and even Crimson Riot.
5th-Daigoro Banjo-Lariat
Bearer for 4 years
Quirk: Backwhip-Same as canon.
Dresses more like a cowboy, including tassles on his jacket and a stetson.
Worked alongside Crimson Riot, and was part the generation of heroes that began to resemble modern Hero Society.
6th-Enma Rokuya-Smokebomb
Bearer for 6 years
Quirk: Scattersmoke-Generation and limited control of smoke who could scatter the attention and dull the senses of anyone who inhales.
Heteromorphic mouth similar to a vent. Black, high collared jacket.
Vigilante who fought against Yakuza. Favoured a katana in a fight and was willing to kill.
7th-Nana Shimura-Skywalker
Bearer for 15 years
Quirk: Float-Could essentially ‘repel’ gravity and control it’s effects on her. Usually used it to fly, but could essentially invert gravity to repel blows and extend her blows into ranged attacks.
Glasgow smile from a fight, nicknamed ‘Smiley’ by Torino, leaned into it.
Costume had red detailing instead of yellow.
8th-Toshinori Yagi-All Might
Bearer for 40 years.
I’ll detail him in a separate post
9th-Izuku Midoriya-Deku/Dekiru
His own interpretation of the powers is basically a series of dials (inspired by a talk with Mirio) tied to an immense, but still limited, power source.
This involves strength, speed, cushioning his bodies against blows, a healing factor. and the other Torchbearer’s Quirks.
For example, he could toggle OFA to put all his power in Float and Blackwhip, but he’d lose his superhuman strength.
The problem is that a) His body still needs time training and using the quirk to adapt to its full power, and the fact that B) he has to learn how to properly toggle it.
Unfortunately, he’s initially operating on all or nothing mindset that has him constantly putting all his power into every blow.
He ends up unlocking the other Quirks in reverse order.
There’s more to say, but I’ll detail them in a later post.
Influence on Izuku’s final costume.
Red gauntlets/greaves with grooves to allow Blackwhip, armour on shoulder & hips, derived from Nana & All Might.
X glow from OFA derived from two.
Goggles from 5th.
Vented rebreather to release Scattersmoke from 6th.
Marie Antoinette streak in hair like Yoichi.
Mouth scar in the shape of Fourth’s Danger Sense.
Yellow mini cape from Nana & Third.

Majora's Mask 3D: Restored
TL;DR: Majora's Mask 3D made a weird bunch of changes that make it the inferior gameplay experience compared to the N64 version. But now there's Project Restoration, which fixes all of that and more. Try it out! Full story below.
A good while ago, I found Nerrel's video review of MM3D, which asks the question, "Was Majora's Mask 3D a Bad Remake?" In his opinion, yes. The remake fucked up Deku Link's movement and Zora Link's swimming, butchered the boss fights and ice arrows, disabled saving with the Song of Time, weakened the Inverted Song of Time to slowing time to 50% instead of 30% (he forgot to mention this one but it's true), and failed to implement obvious quality of life updates, all the while adding light and color in places that take away from the game's dark atmosphere.
His halfway solution was to make an HD texture pack for the N64 version, which is very, very impressive. He redrew pretty much every texture by hand, but unfortunately couldn't update the models without the game crashing. And at the time of his video, there was already a mod of the game that made a few of those QoL updates. Nerrel admitted that the texture and model work in MM3D is great, and that a mod that fixes all the regressions it made might make it the definitive way to play the game.
At the time, no such mod existed. So I went through the trouble of installing and setting up his texture pack, Majora's Mask HD, on my computer. I played up to the Snowhead Temple before losing steam and getting wrapped up in something else. I was impressed by his hard work, but at the same time, the 20 fps, inconvenience of emulating, lack of motion controls, and awkward juxtaposition of HD textures with N64-quality models made it not quite satisfying to play.
A couple days ago, I finished my most recent playthrough of Ocarina of Time 3D. I was faced with a tough choice. MMHD, or MM3D? That's when I discovered Project Restoration, a fan project to fix the regressions MM3D made while adding QoL features. Link's movement? Fixed. Bosses? Fixed. Songs of Time? Fixed. Transformation masks mapped to the D-Pad? Yes. New button combos with ZL and ZR? Hell yeah. Subsequent cutscenes of playing the Song of Soaring and Elegy of Emptiness? Disabled. Owl statues still saving if you want? You betcha. A whole bunch of other QoL featuers? Oh yeah. I already homebrewed my 3DS, so I downloaded it.
Holy hell, this is great. The lighting and colorfulness is so easy to forgive when you have the best of both worlds. I'm having such a good time right now. And with the way patching games works with Luma, my MM3D cartridge is perfectly safe. If I put it in my other 3DS, the patch isn't there. So yeah, it's been a blast. Playing the way they intended in 2000 with better graphics, controls, and performance. What a time. This is certainly the best way to play Majora's Mask.

Note
What was the point of AFO reversing in age?
in order to get me all hyped up about seeing him all small and vulnerable and adoptable. and then ruin me, and my reputation.
but yeah it's probably related to the whole child motif going on with toga / shigaraki / dabi and uraraka / deku / shoto. where it's supposed to recall origins and motivations and innocence and humanity and all that junk. and then in contrast there's lil AFO who eats his mom and kicks his teensy baby brother in the street after a spot of murder.
so i guess to invert the child motif and really double down on how Womb To Tomb evil afo is. sad!

Tumblr please do NOT let this flop😭
I spent 2 whole days on this please
Also, i wanted to show the dynamics between my inverted au characters, and how theyre different from the canon. But i made sure to include one key aspect of their canon selves into these versions to keep it interesting
Ill delve more into it in another post, but pretty much the summary is:
Uraraka is a spoiled rich girl
Todoroki is a happy go lucky idiot
Deku is straight up emo (with pink hair)
And bakugou's a crying loser who gets made fun of and used by his "friends"
I swear they're more interesting than meets the eye, ill make a post explaining it more soon😅

Uraraka Ochako (Uravity) is the third. Her logo is a planet with stripes and two rings around it. The stripes are pink and pastel pink, the first ring is thin and blue. The second ring is thicker and the same pastel pink, it says ‘Uravity’ on it in bold black letters. There are stars around the logo. Uraraka looks like she’s in the middle of doing the shoot dance. Her back turned to the viewer, her left leg bent behind her. Her brown hair is put up with an Invisible Girl themed hairclip, which is see-through. Uraraka is wearing her own themed bomber jacket, which has the same logo along the back. The hood is light blue, the sleeves pink. She’s wearing hot-pink shorts, which show off the star tattoo on her right inner shin. As well as the Pinky themed ankle Boots, which is an inverted version of Pinky’s Hero Costume, being mostly pink with blue blobs. They are heeled boots with a P on the bottom sole.
Todoroki Shoto (Shoto) is the fourth. His logo is as simple as it can get, his name in black letters with the accent over the first O. Familiar two-toned hair and scar over the left side of his face, Todoroki is in the middle of eating an orange popsicle. He is wearing black and red athletic shoes, with an orange stripe and white laces.

The bottoms of the bellbottoms have that same dripping blue acid as her logo, which hide her purple combat boots.

Jiro looks to be on her way to band practice, with a guitar on her back. The guitar is in a black case with red detailing, her own merch. Jiro is wearing a long leather jacket, with yellow buttons and Tsukuyomi’s Hero symbol on each shoulder. Jiro has a ChargeBolt chocker on, which is black with a single electricity bolt charm on it. Kaminari Denki (ChargeBolt) is the tenth. His logo is made up of a C and a B, the two letters are stacked to look like a electricity bolt, the C large and the B squished. Eyes canted to the side, hair down behind her, hands intertwined in front of her. Yaoyorozu is wearing a cream colored turtle-neck, Shoto’s merch. Ojiro’s wearing normal beige slacks, and plain black dress shoes. His belt is black with a golden buckle. The end of the belt looks like a piece of torn off tape, Cellophane merch.
Mineta Minoru (Grape Juice) is dead twentieth. His logo is two dark purple grapes with a yellow stem, the initials G J carved into the side of the grapes. Mineta is on the ground, face down, his nose pressed to the floor, balls on his head toward the viewer. He looks to be out cold, his legs crumpled under him. He is wearing a dark purple shirt with his own logo on the sleeve, muddy green shorts, and yellow shoes.
Shinso Hitoshi (Mind Blank?) is twentieth twenty-first. He does not have a logo. Shinso is crouching over Mineta, looking down at the other purple boy somewhat curiously. new intro
just started 127, and that means i got a new intro.
some notes (not in order by any means):
midoriya looks son tired. and disheveled. like you CAN SEE the eyebags.
bakugo being so calm is unnerving. he's focused calm too.
the mha/bnha logo glitching out and the colors being inverted feel like foreshadowing and some symbolism coming into place with deku's vigalante era
new character! that's cool!
loving the end frame where everyone is behing deku and he has his fist raised in the air like all might and endeavor
the scene where deku rips out of his vigalante mask and tenko rips out of shigaraki. deku catches him and reache shis hand out and his fingers connect/cover the star. that was cool!
