My ★★★★ review of In the Heights on Letterboxd https://boxd.it/5JSu4Z
Notes on the rewatch:
- John M Chu went so Edgar Wright with the synchronised actions and sound effects and I love it
- I know it takes place during a heatwave and the cinematography is meant to look like glaring white-hot sunshine, but in some scenes it just looks overcast. Like if you added a whistling wind sound effect it would actually look a bit chilly
- My favourite character is the guy at the club who asks Vanessa to dance and then instantly takes no for an answer
- The super-naturalistic dialogue scenes shouldn't work alongside the super-stylised musical numbers but JMC transitions from one to the other really smoothly (except in Blackout and Champagne which go a bit Tom Hooper)
-That said, the pace in the dialogue scenes is a bit slow and that's why it's 2.5 hours long but you somehow didn't have time for 'Inutil' you bastards!
- I know I'd feel really out of place as a skinny English guy who can't dance but I don't care, I want to be at that pool party and at that club and at that street party
- It's nice how, among all the sweaty attractive people there are just as many ordinary looking people or all ages and body-types. Even those disgusting contortionists in the pool *shudder*
- At 1:26:25 it looks like Abuela Claudia's holding a lightsabre
- The little boy seeing Benny and Nina dancing on the wall is an example of how you can break the suspension of disbelief for the sake of a joke PROVIDED YOU ONLY DO IT ONCE
- Even though I'm bummed songs like 'Inutil' got cut, it's nice that Miranda and Lacamoire still found ways to sneak their melodies in. The 'Sunrise' theme at the end of 'When The Sun Goes Down' gives me shivers
- I really like the sound mixing. That "let me listen to my block" line makes you focus on the immersive potential of the birdsong and distant traffic. It really puts you in the world
- the Finale's my favourite song but god the ending doesn't half drag! At least they bring it back around for the final few minutes and end on a high

OMG I FORGOT TO MENTION WHY YUJIN'S PARENTS ARE IN THE COUNTRY
I imagine him as being from like the Japanese equivalent of the Midwest mostly because I think he's soo Nick Carraway coded that I just. Thought they should both be midwest dudes who move to big cities
His parents are farmers and never really forgave him for wanting to pursue medicine instead of taking up the family farm and "thinking he was too good for them." Especially his dad. I do in fact have Inutil from In The Heights on my playlist for him cause that sort of captures my vibe of their relationship and how he wanted to do better for Susato but ends up feeling like he failed her. So he tries to compensate by giving her as many opportunities as he can.
He does find good family in Ayame's parents and Mrs. Hudson, but he definitely understands the importance of found family which is a common theme that I think connects the original exchange trio and their spouses so much.
Some (Slightly Yujin-Centric) Head Canons About the Original Study Exchange Characters
Warning!! The Great Ace Attorney 2 SPOILERS AHEAD
The grandma that raises Susato for the first five years is Ayame's mom. Yujin does NOT talk to his parents. but he does feel the need to quietly send them money out in the country. Helps him connect to Jigoku whose family straight up disowned him (the devil connotation in his name is too easy to not make his fam super puritanical and decide he isn't good enough for them), Genshin who lowkey wishes he could disown his parents but kinda needs them around cause of the whole teen dad thing and his wife being VERY poor so basically having no assets to bring to the table besides bastard child (made her a factory worker cause industrial revolution was growing at the time, women who needed to work were basically prostitutes or factory workers and the working conditions of both were shit, and Kazuma's speech in the original Japanese game is actually about the need to improve factory conditions and liberate those workers which was super progressive at the time so I think his mother being a former worker who had to go back to support them after Genshin died and that basically killing her would 100% radicalize him; sadly Japanese society would not have looked at her very kindly at the time, but I love her), and Kazuma's mom whose only family has been dead since she was younger than Kazuma was (helps him understand her better when Yujin comes back from England to discover his parents died while he was away and no one told him cause they just weren't in actual contact at all)
Ayame has a good relationship with her parents. They're great. They run the dojo Yujin and Jigoku (and later Susato) learn/practice judo at. It's pretty close to the university so they both decide to go their for it, which is how they meet Yujin ALSO meets Ayame there cause her mom insists he can come by to practice any time he wants cause his studies end up giving him weird hours of free time. So he decides to go in the middle of the night one time and Ayame Susato-Takedown style attacks him assuming he's an intruder. Her mom clarifies and leaves them alone. They talk and spar til they lose track of time and it's morning. blah blah love story. Her parents are also very supportive of women's rights so they encourage Ayame to have a career. So she's an writer under pen name (Yujn starts doing his journals in England in her honor since she was always jotting down notes like that to use later). Yujin's parents were much more conservative but he never really understood the point of their beliefs. Naturally questioned everything thank god.
Ayame is the one who applied for Yujin to do the study tour. He was too down on himself and sure they wouldn't pick him but she knows he's brilliant and forges the application for him (he doesn't know until he's accepted.) The plan was her pen name would take a trip to Britain independent of the study tour so she could keep writing and they could go together. Plans changed a little when they found out she was pregnant (they were already married but weren't really planning a timeline on when to have kids.) They decided to continue their careers in Japan instead so they could start their family and maybe they'll check England out when Susato's a little older. They were still cycling through candidates for the third spot when Tragedy Strikes, so Genshin and Seishoro convince them to let Yujin back on and depart the tour sooner than intended Yujin is not doing well in the wake of Ayame's death. He's truly trying his best but he can barely take care of himself and Susato cries anytime he holds her or feeds her or changes her to the point he's worried she might be colic before they actually knew what that was (really she can just sense how stressed he is and the looming despair of everyone around her grieving Ayame.) Thankfully Ayame's parents are there to help and she seems to do so much better with them that in his grief and dysfunction, he decides the best thing he can do for her is literally just to support her financially cause he's going to fuck her up if he keeps going like this. And making as much money as he can means going where pathology is the hottest right now, which the exchange trip is his ticket too
Seishoro and Genshin are friends from childhood (yeah I like Brutus by the Buttress for them too much not to be). Yujin and Genshin meet each other through Seishoro, Yujin meets Kazuma's mom through Genshin, and she meets Ayame through Yujin Important to me that they're ALL good friends, especially Yujin and Kazuma's mom cause I feel that relationship is very important in the year after he returns to Japan. It's what ultimately leads to him unofficially adopting Kazuma after her death.
Like mentioned above, she has to return to her factory job which she was thankfully safe from after becoming pregnant with Kazuma because Genshin's family has money from before the samurai abolition that could support them. But they never really liked her. They always thought she derailed Genshin's bright future (even though he's still very successful while he's alive) and they don't want much to do with Kazuma until he's of age because he's not much use to them as a child. So now it's up to her to support them. The options are pretty much the same after half a decade, so back to the factory she goes which escalates her painful but manageable health problems into life threatening ones. And she is VERY insistent that Kazuma does not get a job to try to take the load off. She had to start working as a child and it wrecked her body. She will not let the same happen to her son. He's a smart boy who is going to stay in school and focus on his grades and he'll find a good job to keep him out of this position even if it kills her. She will not let this horrible system take him the way it took her.
She also doesn't like Genshin's family. She saw the toll they took on him and she doesn't want that for Kazuma, especially since they only care about him when he's useful to them. Yujin is also trying to help her but he's already supporting himself, Susato, and Ayame's parents on the salary of a fresh out of school pathologist (he tries to continue on the coroner route but after watching Kazuma's mom fade away in front of him, unable to do anything for her, he loses his stomach for it and switches to research and academia.) He can only stretch it so much. So she begs him, her only real friend anymore (Jigoku gets distant from both of them during this time cause of killing Genshin. He warms back up to Yujin after a while but at that point it's too late for Kazuma's mom), to at least Kazuma in if something happens to her. The Asogis don't have his best interests at heart and he can't survive on his own. She doesn't ask him to go as far as he does, she mostly pleads with him to give him enough financial support to stay in school and out of the workforce. Yujin sees that he desperately needs emotional support too and decides to take him in as his own (he tries his best to respect that he's not his father but he can't help but come to see Kazuma like his son. Kazuma has very complicated feelings about the Mikotobas and loves them like family too but he creates an intentional wall between them (that Yujin can see but Susato doesn't until he comes back "from the dead" in the second game) because he feels like he's betraying his parents by loving anyone else like he loved them. Ryunosuke helps break that down a little and seeing him, Susato, Iris, and Sholmes kinda beats into his head the idea of found family, so he tries to let everyone in more post-canon.
I know the game literally only talks about Kazuma's dad. I'm pretty sure they don't even mention his mom once, maybe just to say the grief killed her or something. but I think Kazuma was 100% a mama's boy and at the time, losing her hit him much harder than losing his dad (tho it doesn't help that it stacked on top of that death) Genshin had already been gone for so many years that Kazuma was a little more detached from him than he'd care to admit. and they never had a chance to reconnect like Susato and Yujin did. vs. losing his mom who has been around the entire time and is literally killing herself trying to give him the best life she can I think over time, he hyperfixated on Genshin's death being the thing that "ruined his life," or at least tore his family apart and focuses on clearing his name as something tangible he can do to try to get justice since there's nothing he can do to bring either of them back, but even less he can do to avenge his mom
I think Genshin and his wife loved each other but they got married more out of circumstance than anything else. They provided an escape for each other when they met and all things being equal, they would've moved on with someone else and possibly never seen each other again. They came to appreciate each other more raising Kazuma together and their bond definitely strengthen over their shared love and devotion for him, but when they were on other sides of the world, they sort of fell out of "love". Don't get me wrong, they still very much care about each other. Genshin's death definitely devastates her and causes her health to deteriorate much quicker. I just think they both naturally feel an inclination to explore other relationships while apart but don't because they feel too guilty "cheating" on each other despite knowing on some level they both feel this way. Plus societal expectations of married couples still weighs on them. Even though a lot of people considered it no big deal for men to cheat, Genshin still struggled with acting on any of his feelings while in England (COUGH COUGH KLINT) I also kinda think they were both gay and were drawn to each other because of that but struggled with identifying their feelings because of comphet and their platonic affection for each other.
On the other hand, I think Klint and Lady B also started as a marriage of convenience. They're both the eldest living family members of their families and though Klint has Barok, they're both far from the perfect picture of nobility. So getting married is a good way to improve their social standing and preserve wealth and their family images. Plus they find each other charming enough to strike up a partnership and Barok likes her which is hard cause a sweetheart but kinda judgmental about the complexities of nobility and the way it shapes people (he's also very scandalized at the idea of marrying for anything short of love cause he's always been a hopeless romantic and that's what their parents did. He tries to get Genshin to side with him who then has to awkwardly explain he had a shotgun wedding.) Anyway all that to say they like each other enough but don't have any romantic feelings in the beginning. But I think they slowly fall in love over the next few years until they're genuinely very enamored with each other and want to start a family together. Which is a teensy bit of a struggle so the best day of Klint's life ends up coinciding with the worst. (His wife is pregnant and they're going to have a child together :D! But also Stronghart caught onto him taking justice into his own hands and blackmailed him into killing his mentor, who acted as a stand-in father after the death of his parents :/) 10. I think Yujin, Genshin, and Jigoku remain very close in London and get together quite often but they each have their own little corners of London they sort of keep to themselves. Great friends who are all somewhat acquainted with each other but only barely. Like at a party Klint hosts and wants to invite Genshin's friends and some Judiciary and Sholmes crashes it. Yujin has Sholmes and Mrs. Hudson (I can't fucking believe we never see or talk to her in-game by the way. They only mention her like once). Jigoku has Stronghart and some other dudes who are definitely kickstarting his villain arc. And Genshin has Klint and Lady B and Barok. and then they all kinda share Gregson cause he intersects with all their bullshit (much to his dismay) and Sholmes to an extent cause he NEEDS to know everything he can about Yujin's terrible taste in friends and he breaks into crime scenes and courthouses and offices a LOT
I don't know how accurate this is to ACD Watson, but: Yujin definitely thinks he's a good judge of character but he's actually shit cause he always wants to see the best in people So Sholmes 100% feels the need to investigate everyone in his circle to make sure he hasn't accidentally befriended Jack the Ripper. None of them are serial killers (yet) but he's keeping his eye on all of them.
OKAY NOW I'M DONE
Sorry for the stream of consciousness dump there but I wanted to get all my thoughts out about these freaks with barely any screentime besides Sholmes and Yujin.
And Would you believe I have all this head canon lore about Kazuma's mom/Mrs. Asogi but I STILL can't come up with a good name for her?? Same for Lady B but at least I have something to refer to her as besides Iris's mom or Klint's wife.

encanto did such a good job at portraying the trope of family first in latin culture. it didn’t shy away from the problems that can arise from having a culture so heavily grounded on family-first ideas but it also did not push the narrative that one should let go of their family (which western media sometimes does). the whole story was about healing the family instead of ever pushing maribel to leave them behind. it was just a beautiful display of a latin family that had its issues but despite so they still loved each other and valued their family enough to be willing to heal and be better to keep and protect the family they had built.

endo is positive in his past life he was a devout worshipper of whatever religion he happened to be a part of. the way his mind is filled with nothing but of his overbearing love for chika tends to consume him in the best and worst of times. he could and would write scriptures and sing songs of worship for chika and chika only; his one and only reason for existing in this moment, or any moment really. such a dangerous obsession would normally turn someone off; it's not normal. he has the greed of the devil wanting god's throne for himself, except endo does not care for such an inutile chair to prop himself on, but would blemish and mar chika's body whole, just for himself.
Tumblr media
the one thing endo cherishes during moments like this is one he would have to wait to come into fruition soon. with the way the shorter man was grabbing at him, each touch burning a new memory into endo's brain. he feels hot, a furnace exhaling high heat and ready to combust any moment, especially when he hears those utterly beautiful moans falling from his beloved's mouth. he knows chika can take him being rough; after all endo knows those hands and this body better than the owner himself. playing rough was never a problem and in fact turned him on more.
years and years, with endless — bottomless — patience, endo can see the results of his quiet tampering in chika's life. the way chika needs him, seeks his touch, his company, just him, and him alone; his selfish desires slowly coming to include endo in his selfishness drives endo delirious. to be the sole focus of the object of his desire — is there a greater reason to exist beyond this simple feeling?
endo allows himself to bask in the feeling wholly, uncaring of the wetness he leaves behind on chika's skin; a mix of drool and tears as his excitement reaches new heights in this moment. endo wants to sob when he hears chika groan his name so beautifully, like every time. he's going to make sure that's the only word he knows by the end of the night. just as quickly as endo was in his space of heaven, he was forced away, a whine of protest leaving him momentarily.
endo's mouth parts slightly, more tears fall down his face as he rushes to take his own pants off. he's swearing harshly under his breath, “fuck. fuck!!” he's never been more frustrated in his life, and honestly shouldn't give a damn about his own clothes, however chika helpfully assists him. endo has the urge to slap his hand away and utter how he could do it himself, but endo is trembling so much, he can't find it in himself to.
as soon as the button is loosened, he let's gravity and the shuffling of his body to the rest of the work, he turns chika around, pressing him into the wall. he kisses anywhere he can; neck, cheek, lips eventually, as his hands force his boxers down just enough, along with chika's. endo has the sense of mind to spit into his hand at least (the lube is somewhere in the bedroom, a shame really), fist his cock just enough to lube himself up. he parts chika's cheeks wide, presenting him unabashedly. endo hopes it hurts, he wants chika to feel everything he gives him and more. his forehead rests on chika's shoulder as he slowly but surely pushes his way in.
“relax, relax for me. you're so fucking tight — fuck,” endo whimpers, doing his best to hold back his restraints for now. all he needs is to take off the edge before he absolutely loses it. slides into chika inch by heavenly delicious inch. it's not the first time, but every time endo feels like crying. he might be already but he doesn't care. his fingers dig into chika's hips keeping him still, massaging him to get him to relax so he doesn't break his fucking dick — all the way until he is seated inside. he is not pulling out; not today or ever, if chika allows him to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THEIR STRUGGLE FOR CONTROL IS A JOUST WITH THEM CHARGING AT EACH OTHER WITH THEIR LANCES. it will end in one of them pierced by one of their whims. their thoughts for once are levelled, finding the same ground that they need each other. chika is nothing but a burning candle, wax drippings turning into a pool of liquid with every kiss. he can taste the greed off his lips like an explorer claiming unfound 'territory'. this is nothing new to them, the reaction between their bodies is becoming apparent. it was only staved off by the way chika didn't budge, he wouldn't. he would prefer the privacy of their home to know that endo wouldn't leave him today.
chika would never be caught vocalizing how he feels about the way endo says his name, but he loves the way it hangs off his tongue. to him, endo utters his name with the repetition of the chorus of a song to remind it's listener the meaning behind it all. he loves the way the ravenette's body feels, sturdy & built to tank hits, or the ministrations of chika's loving touch. there is a small groan when he feels himself pressed abruptly against the wall since he has no problems with the sandpaper roughness that endo is displaying. the only thing his action further reveals is his wanton desire for the only man that has been by his side.
Tumblr media
he can't imagine anyone like endo, a one of a kind instrument that is customized by their look & sound. to chika, endo is tuned to the beat of chika's desires, every whim he wishes it would be granted. the catch is that endo has stripped him of any hardships, but conditioned him to want the other. this mixture of feelings has transformed into something bigger an elixir of alchemy that doesn't exist besides between themselves. no one could understands the machinations of their relationship but each other & in that, chika knows that he would want forever with endo.
a groan escapes loved lips as the offering of his neck is presented to endo. the way his mouth delves onto the column of chika's flesh says a lot. fingers find themselves entangled with coiled hair, there's a hard grip as he holds onto him. endo is a vampire & chika is his willing victim to be marked for him only. ❛endo, ❜ his voice trails off between bated breath. the way his teeth sink into him sends electrical shocks along his body, he can feel himself coming alive even more. the ache in his pants is more apparent than it was during the silent walk. he is a man of action so at endo's protest he lets go of his grip within the confines of sable locks. he quickly undoes the buckle & removes the belt.
there is a quick shuffling as he undoes his pants before eyeing him. ❛ i want you naked too, kiss me again. ❜ chika wonders if he sounds needy before he quickly starts to remove endo's pants because he knows this is going to be more than a one time thing. he knows that the flints of passion can sometimes be hard to start, but once it gets going there was nothing stopping it. not when it came to them.
so now he'll allow himself to get lost in the maze that is endo.

okay I wanted to write the Obey Boys with musical songs: Asmo is sooo the Squip doing Be More Chil And Simon? A Musical from Something Rotten. Mammon is almost definitely Don't Lose Your Head from Six the Musical Beel as Audrey II - Feed Me Obvious choice Lucifer as Heather Chandler Levi as Eric from The Phantom of the Opera. For damn sure that is envy to the teeth Satan is Harold Hill from The Music Man Belphegor is A Little Priest. You'd think thatd be Beel but Belphie is that level of cruel
Oooooooo I love this concept, however I must challenge your song choices.
Asmo - Girls of the Night (Jekyll & Hyde) or All You Wanna Do (Six the Musical) - I feel like this better captures the fact that he feels he has to give the audience the desire that they crave, but also how he feels that there isn't anything more to him except for his lust and beauty.
Mammon - Good Kid (Percy Jackson the Musical) - Give me that broken Mammon angst. I think this song fits him so so good. Feeling like he's not accepted or good enough and wanting more? Yeah, that's my Mams.
Beel - Gone, I'm Gone (Hadestown) - Firstly, I am half-jokingly offended by the choice of "Feed Me" for Beel. Sure, it suits his appetite, but I think it doesn't suit him in any other way at all. Gone, I'm Gone, however, addresses his appetite, and how he feels it to be a burden, while also talking about his soft, love-driven heart.
Lucifer - Wait For It (Hamilton) - Rather than giving him the role of Heather Chandler (which may suit his leader of the pack vibes but doesn't quite fit his elegance, subtleties and poise) I feel the role of Aaron Burr is perfect for Lucifer. A man who tries his best, constantly stressed, and wants success even if it's just out of his grasp. Wait for it, specifically, fits Luci as it appeals to how he keeps things close to his chest and keeps the burden to himself and waits for things to fall into place. He goes by his own plans and follows Diavolo's rules
For him, I also want to throw out there Inutil (In The Heights OBC). The line "I will not be the reason that my family won't succeed" is just Lucifer to a T. Not to mention he shares Mr. Rossario's stubbornness and pride.
Satan - Totally F*cked (Spring Awakening) or (for some reason) I Didn't Plan It (Waitress) - Both of these songs have the tempo and emotion that fit Satan's wrath, but they both come from breaking points. In Totally F*cked, I feel like it's his schemes and pranks catching up with him and his anger towards Lucifer. I Didn't Plan It, i feel like is his feelings towards MC, specifically the line "I didn't plan it / But that's life / and I'm finally feeling alive".
Belphie - I Didn't Get To Say Goodbye (The Mad Ones) and/or Go Tonight (also The Mad Ones) - I feel like Belphie fits Sam's character really well. They're both smart and do care for those around them but are too caught up in their grief for their loved one to full give the other people in their life the "Belphie/Sam" that they once knew.
So yeah. Those are my choices!
*update* I FORGOT LEVI!!! OH MY GOD! OKAY!
Levi - If I Could Tell Her (Dear Evan Hansen) or Words Fail (Dear Evan Hansen) - I feel like Evan and Levi are very similar except rather than being obsessed with trees, Levi is obsessed with anime. I think almost any of Evan's songs suit him and his anxiety really well. That being said, obviously Michael In The Bathroom from Be More Chill would also be a really good fit for him.

OC PLAYLIST CHALLENGE BY @MARIGOLDE
Rules: Take your sims/ocs and assign them a song that fits their character to make a little playlist for your characters. Post yours and tag as many people as you’d like :)
I wasn't tagged, but I really wanted to do this cause I love listening to things to get in my character's mindsets.
So some of these characters have been aged up for one/both pictures in their song.
So Songs and Characters!
David: Inutil from In the Heights Cast album David feels like he is letting everyone down and pressures himself to make things better for everyone. He feels like if his children aren't ready for the Imperial Life, everything he is/will do is useless
Katalina: Tum Hi Ho from the Hindi movie Aashiqui 2 This fits with Kat because it seems like a movie her and her mom would watch but also the song talks about the devotion towards their partner. Katalina is very devoted to David and these lyrics (which are an english translation) seem to fit Kat "Because it's only you Now it's only you Now only you are my life My peace and even my pain Now only you are my love"
Edmund: Cardigan by Taylor Swift Edmund is a Taylor Swift vibe boy and it fits him in a very spoilery way
Minerva: Good 4 U by Olivia Rodrigo Minnie's anthem since everything that happened with Nicky due to @simsroyallegacy (and myself but I'm putting the blame on her jk jk I love her)
Louis: If I Can't Have You by Shawn Mendes (yes I misspelled it on the thing but I'm tired) it's spoilery so I won't say much more
Maria Aisha: Nothing Else Matters by Little Mix
Henri: Waving Through a Window by Ben Platt ala the Dear Evan Hansen Cast Album

So Seeing In the Heights
The pros:
Beautiful cinematography- the way they set up the scenes, the directing, the artistic way to use the environment in the songs.
This isn’t a dance musical- but fuck if it won’t be considered one now. First the entire ensemble was brilliant in all their singing,,, but the dancing and how it added so much life into the show.
I think they were smart in cutting conflict from Nina/Benny- thats a tired concept and it makes wayy more sense for the conflict to be focused on Nina and her Father and how to move ahead.
I adored Sonny and his plot- bc its an important thing to show on screen, fits his character motivations in activism, and gave him more depth. (though I missed his part of Blackout in the musical- it was important for his chara and also a realistic aspect of citylife and why someone would want to leave again)
I love how much the made sure all the charas really felt like a connected family.
It did stand on its own as a solid musical movie.
Cons:
With Nina’s plot, while I understood her reasoning for wanting to drop out (no spoilers but damn that was *real*, I saw shit similar at my school)- it makes the ‘selling business’ aspect of the plot a bit confusing. In the musical she was working and studying, her grades dipped, and she lost her scholarship- so her dad came in clutch. Here despite Stanford still giving her the scholarships, her dad has to sell his entire shop? A school like Stanford gives near full scholarships. Like it removed some necessary real hardship working class kids face when having to work through college.
I miss Camilla, like I understand what they did with her as a plot point instead- but dammit I like Enough and there are never enough older women in movies.
EVERYTHING about shifting Abuela Claudia’s arc. Though she mattered of course, she felt soooo sidelined. Like her death in the musical is the big turning point of the story. Her memorial is what has Usnavi realize this block, where Abuela made home and raised them all up, that is *home*. They gave us the feeling of her as someone who cared for them, but the way that they turned some lines bc they shifted her death- like in Carnival Usnavi basically goes ‘well Abuela is dead annywaays’ and it felt odd. It took power from her and agency in how she helped Usnavi recognize going back was possible.
Besides that- why introduce the lotto like that if it is just gonna not really be a thing? Like it was brought up last min in the end but it felt so disjointed. And maybe its bc I know the musical so well, but they had to change sooo many lyrics to erase mention of the lottery and how important it was. And I know they wanted to emphasize hard work for little dreams, but for me part of the lotto happening was a highlight on how when you’re working people- it would take something like the lotto to accomplish these sorts of desires. I don’t know. Its what makes Usnavi have the tools to leave, otherwise his thing with the DR is a bit too simple?
With that, I completely understand the timing aspect, but I missed Hundreds of Stories, Inutil, Enough, and well all of them. Like some, like Everything I Know, and Inutil they blended in enough plotwise but STILL. Just bc I would’ve loved to hear them.
So Overall, it has to be taken a bit seperate from the original musical. Bc they changed lyrics, order of events, and actual events themselves enough that they aren’t the same work. But in itself it was a really enjoyable show with fantastic emotional moments

Child’s Play
pairing: obi-wan kenobi x princess!reader
warnings: lots of fluff and mutual pining
notes: I wanted to write more for this duo and their story bc I just find them so precious🥺 also I want to have obi-wan’s babies but honestly who doesn’t?
summary: a trip to the village orphanage allows obi-wan to see you in a new light, and neither of you can help yourselves from picturing what it would be like to start a family together.
Tumblr media
You stand by the ramp of your leisure ship, arms crossed impatiently over your chest and a permanent pout on your lips as you tap the outsole of your elegant slipper against the ground. You don’t see why you need a guard to complete such a mundane task, a task you’ve consummated numerous times before, but unless you were with guardian you would not be permitted access to your transport. A Jedi Knight would be quite inutile at the destination you were expected to arrive at within the next hour, and all of this fuss seemed very unnecessary.
From the palace doors does Obi-Wan then emerge looking contrite and apologetic all at once, already revealing to you the answer to your predicament.
“Well?” You ask anyway, hoping to gods your assumption is falsely based.
“I’m sorry Princess, but your father has made it very clear that you are not to leave the palace without an escort.”
“Oh, karabast,” you huff, narrowing your jaundiced gaze at the faint amusement on Obi-Wan’s features. “I’m glad you’re enjoying my misery.”
“On the contrary,” Obi-Wan repudiates. “It is not your misery I take delight in but your passionate, although stubborn, nature. I must accompany you on your journey, but I shall do my best to stay out of the way.”
As always, Obi-Wan finds a way to compromise, and as always, you find yourself melting at his understanding nature. Though you are a Princess, he never treats you as fragile or incapable. Obi-Wan has never viewed you as a damsel in distress and never will, and it makes you all the more fonder of your Jedi Knight.
“Please forgive me for my brash nature,” you smile apologetically, cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “I just can’t stand the fact that every day my freedom is chipped away at. This outing is a duty I hold closest to my heart as Princess of Caelia, and not being able to fully enjoy it without having to look over my shoulder for hidden dangers is almost too much to fathom.“
“Then I will do my best to make sure there is no danger present during our visit into the village,” Obi-Wan vows earnestly, and you can’t help but wonder if he’d still speak so passionately about protecting you if he hadn’t been hired by your father to look after you.
“Though I’d prefer to go on my own, I’m glad I’m going with you,” you say. You smile endearingly in a way that makes Obi-Wan weak at the knees, but he recovers in time to grant you a feeble smile in return.
“I think it’s best we get on our way,” he suggests, and you graciously accept the hand he offers you as he guides you up the ramp and into the ship.
~~~
Obi-Wan stands by the doorway dutifully, on guard but out of your way just as he had promised, though feeling rather silly in the process. Perhaps an escort truly hadn’t been necessary for this trip.
At the center of the room the children of the orphanage gather around you while you animatedly share exciting adventure stories with a smile bigger than Obi-Wan has ever seen. The little ones cling to your every word, wide eyes keeping your gaze with great awe and admiration, some sitting right at your feet in order to be as close as possible to their Princess.
Though not required of the previous Princesses of Caelia, you made it your duty to visit the village orphanage at least once every month. With these visits came gifts of new toys, clothes, and food you then bestowed upon the children. And though the gifts were blessings in all forms of the word, it was your kind nature that made you such a beloved presence in the drab building. You treated them as equals, beings capable of doing great things, and never once talked down to them or brushed them aside. You were patient, you were gracious, and you were tender hearted. You were the people’s princess, and it was moments like these that Obi-Wan found you almost unbearably easy to fall in love with.
“Master Kenobi?” A little voice calls, tugging at his robes and interrupting his thoughts. At his feet stands a little Twi’lek girl with doe eyes and a shy smile on her face. “Master Kenobi, would you like to sit with us for story time?”
“Oh, I...” Obi-Wan hesitates, because he really should be standing guard at the door, but what danger could there possibly be at such an establishment? “Well, I suppose I could.”
She gives him a toothy grin before taking his hand and guiding him towards the seating area. In the very back row Obi sits himself beside the Twi’lek girl- Ashla - with his legs crossed underneath him. He meets your gaze to give you a sheepish smile, and you can’t help but laugh at how out of place the grown man looks seated amongst the sea of children.
“How kind of you to join us, General Kenobi,” you tease.
“Please, don’t mind me,” he smiles, and his heart all but melts as the surrounding children snuggle closer to his side. They’ve never met a real Jedi before, and their knowing eyes are well aware of the affectionate glances you both steal when you assume no one is looking. The Princess’s knight is the pinnacle of today’s visit, and neither of you mind in the slightest.
When story time is over the children eagerly dig into their new toys, thanking you graciously for your kindness and even offering to let you play with them first. Instead you opt to sit aside and watch while your hair is braided skillfully by some of the other orphans. Obi-Wan sits beside you, eyes traveling along the complicated pattern being implemented into your hair and admiring the way you seem to glow with pure unadulterated happiness.
“I’m sure you think this is a juvenile way to spend time,” you admit, turning sheepish under his gaze. “Playing with orphans when I could be training or strengthening my healing.”
“Not at all. I must admit this trip has made me admire you even more than I thought possible.”
A faint blush tints your cheeks at his words and you cannot help but to fall deeper in love with your protector. Would it be wrong of you to imagine what it would be like to raise a child of your own with Obi-Wan? To settle down somewhere quiet away from the war where you could live out the rest of your days growing your little family? Belly swollen and heart filled to the brim with unconditional love? It was all child’s play in truth, but they were your hopes and dreams, dreams you clutched tightly to your chest and refused to ever let go of.
“I just don’t see the point of being a Princess if I don’t use my title for the good of others.”
“You have a big heart, y/n,” Obi-Wan smiles, “and I think you are going to make a fine Queen one day.”
“I can only hope so,” you smile faintly, heart aching with longing as you look upon the man seated beside you. He pauses then, almost debating whether or not to speak, before tenderly taking your hand in his own and meeting your gaze.
“And you are going to make a fine mother one day as well.”
~~~
You begin your goodbyes as the first sun begins to set, promising another visit soon and promising to bring Obi-Wan with you as well. As always, it’s hard to part from the orphanage, but you take comfort in knowing the supplies you’ve brought will tide them over foe the rest of the month at least.
Ashla approaches Obi-Wan before he can depart, resting two beaded bracelets in his awaiting palm.
“For you and the princess,” she explains shyly, and Obi-Wan smiles.
“Thank you,” he says, kneeling down before her in order to match her height, “I’ll see to it that she receives your gift.”
She smiles before flinging herself into Obi-Wan’s arms, nearly knocking him over with the sheer force of her hug. From the ship’s doorway you watch on with a fond smile as he hugs her with all of his might, promising to return to her soon. He understands now why this means so much to you and feels privileged to have been able to share such an experience with you.
The second sun is just beginning to set when you return to the palace on Obi-Wan’s arm as he escorts you back to your quarters. And decorating your wrists are the matching bracelets from the Twi’lek orphan.

While I'm thinking about it, I'm definitely sad they cut "Inutil", "Enough" and some lines and verses of other songs from the In the Heights film adaptation. However, it is objectively HILARIOUS to me that they couldn't just cut these songs out, but that they had to completely kill Camila off screen pre-story. They literally could not have Nina and Kevin's arguments, or Nina and Benny's argument, or half the shit that goes on in the film version with Nina because Camila would have not been able to contain herself. So to cut the songs out they just had to cut her out completely.
