But travel below Seattle’s cluster of infotech industries and the image appears much the same as that of a hundred years prior - a trade gateway, squeezing value from supply chains by selling transport and logistical support. The southern stretch of the metropolis bears little resemblance to the revitalized urban core of the city proper. Instead of the “cognitive labor” of Microsoft, it is defined instead by the cold calculation of companies like UPS, founded in Seattle when the city was one link in a colonial supply chain built first for timber, then Alaskan gold, then World War. In south Seattle, this logistics empire takes the form of faceless warehouses, food processing facilities, container trucks, rail yards, and industrial parks concentrated between two seaports, an international airport, three major interstates, and railroads traveling in all directions. Meanwhile, the poor have been priced out of the old inner city, moving southward [...]. [T]hey can be found staffing the airport and the rail yards, hauling cargo in and out of two the major seaports, loading boxes in warehouses [...]. Every Seattle is capable of creating an eco-friendly, “cooperative commonwealth” tended by apps and algorithms only insofar as there is a Memphis that can provide human workers to sort the packages, a Shanghai to build the containers that carry them, and a Shenzhen to solder together the circuits of the machines that govern it all.

Criminal prosecutors may soon get to see over 900 documents pertaining to the alleged theft of a diary belonging to President Joe Biden’s daughter after a judge rejected the conservative group Project Veritas’ First Amendment claim.
Attorney Jeffrey Lichtman said on behalf of the nonprofit Monday that attorneys are considering appealing last Thursday’s ruling by U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres in Manhattan. In the written decision, the judge said the documents can be given to investigators by Jan. 5.
The documents were produced from raids that were authorized in November 2021. Electronic devices were also seized from the residences of three members of Project Veritas, including two mobile phones from the home of James O’Keefe, the group’s since-fired founder.
Project Veritas, founded in 2010, identifies itself as a news organization. It is best known for conducting hidden camera stings that have embarrassed news outlets, labor organizations and Democratic politicians.
In written arguments, lawyers for Project Veritas and O’Keefe said the government’s investigation “seems undertaken not to vindicate any real interests of justice, but rather to stifle the press from investigating the President’s family.”
“It is impossible to imagine the government investigating an abandoned diary (or perhaps the other belongings left behind with it), had the diary not been written by someone with the last name ‘Biden,’” they added.
The judge rejected the First Amendment arguments, saying in the ruling that they were “inconsistent with Supreme Court precedent.” She also noted that Project Veritas could not claim it was protecting the identity of a confidential source from public disclosure after two individuals publicly pleaded guilty in the case.
She was referencing the August 2022 guilty pleas of Aimee Harris and Robert Kurlander to conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property. Both await sentencing.
The pleas came two years after Harris and Kurlander — two Florida residents who are not employed by Project Veritas — discovered that Ashley Biden, the president’s daughter, had stored items including a diary at a friend’s Delray Beach, Florida, house.
They said they initially hoped to sell some of the stolen property to then-President Donald Trump’s campaign, but a representative turned them down and told them to take the material to the FBI, prosecutors say.
Eventually, Project Veritas paid the pair $20,000 apiece to deliver the diary containing “highly personal entries,” a digital storage card with private family photos, tax documents, clothes and luggage to New York, prosecutors said.
Project Veritas was not charged with any crime. The group has said its activities were newsgathering and were ethical and legal.
Two weeks ago, Hannah Giles, chief executive of Project Veritas, quit her job, saying in a social media post she had “stepped into an unsalvageable mess — one wrought with strong evidence of past illegality and post financial improprieties.” She said she’d reported what she found to “appropriate law enforcement agencies.”
Lichtman said in an email on behalf of Project Veritas and the people whose residences were raided: “As for the continued investigation, the government isn’t seeking any prison time for either defendant who claims to have stolen the Ashley Biden diary, which speaks volumes in our minds.”

A Texas deputy found multiple drugs inside a stuffed animal during a recent traffic stop for an infraction.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Cody Williams executed a traffic stop on Interstate 10 on Wednesday, July 31. The driver, a 47-year-old man from San Antonio, gave the deputy permission to search his vehicle.
During the search, the deputy smelled marijuana emitting from the car and discovered several Buc-ee's plush toys in the back seat.
The logo for Buc-ee's, a popular chain of convenience stores, is a beaver with a red cap.
USA TODAY reached out to Sheriff Keith Korenek for comment.
Drugs were stuffed inside plush toys, deputies say
When Deputy Williams inspected the plush toys, he found that they were restitched with packages inside containing ecstasy and two pounds of marijuana.
At that point, the driver claimed "he was suffering from chest pain" and was transported to a local hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Authorities seized the drugs and issued a warrant.
Not the first stuffed animal bust
Earlier this year, six people were arrested after the feds accused them of putting fentanyl pills into stuffed animals and mailing them to different addresses in Minnesota. The drugs were originally purchased in Phoenix, Arizona.
During the investigation, according to Minneapolis TV station Fox 9, authorities discovered six packages with 30,000 grams of pills. The accused were charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl.

A neo-Nazi former porn actor who fantasized about launching a white supremacist “ground war” against the U.S. government, destroying electrical substations and assassinating political enemies was sentenced to six years in prison on Thursday.
Paul Kryscuk, 38, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to damage an energy facility.
Justin Hermanson, a 25-year-old Marine Corps veteran and Kryscuk’s co-defendant who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to manufacture firearms and ship interstate, received a sentence of one year and nine months in prison.

The two men appeared before Chief Judge Richard E. Myers II for sentencing in a federal courtroom in Wilmington, N.C., some 70 miles from Camp Lejeune, the Marine Corps base where Hermanson and co-defendant Liam Collins were stationed at one time.
Collins, like Hermanson and Kryscuk, was scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, but the length of his sentence was not immediately known. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina, which prosecuted the cases, could not be reached for comment.
Kryscuk and Hermanson will serve significantly less prison time than the maximum amount allowable under sentencing guidelines. Kryscuk could have received up to 20 years, while Hermanson faced up to five years.
The maximum sentence for Collins, who founded the neo-Nazi terror cell that came to be known as “BSN,” fell in the middle. He faced up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting the interstate transportation of unregistered firearms.
Two other co-defendants — Jordan Duncan, 29, and Joseph Maurino, 25 — have also pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges, and will be sentenced at a later date.
Duncan, a Marine Corps veteran and former federal contractor, has been the focus of extensive coverage by Raw Story following the disclosure that the FBI found classified materials on his hard drive during the FBI raid in October 2020. The government has not charged Duncan with any violations related to the classified materials, and Judge Myers has ordered the parties to maintain tight control of the materials.
Some hints of the types of sensitive material Duncan might have obtained from the government and passed along to his fellow would-be insurgents have emerged during court hearings, however.
Navy Criminal Investigative Service Special Agent John Christopher Little testified in Maurino’s detention hearing that Duncan’s external hard drive contained a “vast amount of explosives schematics” that also turned up on Kryscuk’s electronic devices. Similarly, the agent testified that a manual on how to build homemade silencers that similarly found its way from Duncan’s hard drive to Maurino’s phone.
BSN’s emergence as a neo-Nazi terror cell coincided with the wave of racial justice protests sweeping the country in response to the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Evidence presented in open court by Navy Criminal Investigative Service Special Agent John Christopher Little shows that Kryscuk stalked Black Lives Matter protesters in Boise, while Maurino similarly filmed racial protesters in New Jersey as he drove by in his car.
When the FBI raided Kryscuk’s home in Boise, where he, Collins and Duncan had relocated, in October 2020, agents recovered a handwritten list of intersections that correlated with electrical substations in Oregon, Washington state and California, according to the government. A separate list was written on the flipside of the paper that included politicians such as California state Sen. Scott Wiener and then-Oregon Gov. Kate Brown; Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza; journalist James LaPorta; and L Brands founder Les Wexner.

“Hey, where you going? Don’t go yet!”

The edition of The Pale King Michael Pietsch assembled from David Foster Wallace’s partly completed manuscript is followed by a section entitled “Notes and Asides.” In electing to include (much more to end) the book with the list, Pietsch demonstrates with humility and poignancy the extent to which the work was in progress; allowing Wallace’s remaining questions, aide-memoires; and drafts to speak for themselves on the topic of their half-formation. One is reproduced below.
“Drinion is happy. Ability to pay attention. It turns out that bliss—a second-by-second joy + gratitude at the gift of being alive, conscious—lies on the other side of crushing, crushing boredom. Pay close attention to the most tedious thing you can find (tax returns, televised golf), and, in waves, a boredom like you’ve never known will wash over you and just about kill you. Ride these out, and it’s like stepping from black and white into color. Like water after days in the desert. Constant bliss in every atom.”
Predictably, the presentation of text in The Pale King had a twofold purpose: providing both narrative and immersion (through format). One section, for example, consisted primarily of a collection of sentences describing a character turning a page. Many times, the same sentence was repeated verbatim, with only the name of the character substituted as they flipped one sheet of paper over another. That same sentence could then have been produced later in the same section, provided the same character turned another page. Other sections are laden with jargon: loaded with initialisms only defined in later pages. Functionally, the repetitious monotony paired with compounding misunderstandings about to what or toward whom any given narrator was referring served to recreate for the audience the same boredom and confusion the examiners might themselves have faced in the line of service. Even incomplete, The Pale King demonstrates the same depth of deliberation endemic to Wallace’s work, effectively dethroning Brief Conversations with Hideous Men as my favorite of his books and, as usual, briefly but profoundly disturbing my state of mind after finishing it.
Though the majority of the fourteen or so hours I spent hurtling over Interstate 10 this weekend were spent in a simmering anger—my mood of choice since leaving Flagstaff last month—some of them were relegated to the obligatory boredom of the great American road trip. Riddling the roadway’s twin yellow spines were plastic bags and mysterious slabs of drywall I imagined sending particulate geysers of asbestos fiber into the air each time they were passed over by the drivers dutifully suppressing the instinct to swerve upon seeing them. Out beyond the soft shoulders, intermittent stone trading posts (or, more accurately, their few remaining outer walls) boasted unreadable or unparseable spray paint graffiti. After departing from a rest stop where Mieko made note of a summarizing difference between Arizona and California—their memorial signage for Department of Transportation employees killed in the line of service to the state was plastered on the side of a bathroom wall, while ours, at Sunset Point, took the form of a great sundial—I twisted my left arm around the zipper of the cooler in the back seat, digging out the paper box of leftovers from Sherman’s Deli in Palm Springs. The two blue ice packs below the carton had re-solidified the melting butter from the uneaten half of my mother’s english muffin into an unmistakably cornmeal-pocked pat, which at that point had congealed alarmingly close to the last quarter of the best pastrami sandwich I would have the chance to eat indefinitely.
In spite of the proximity of our two orders combined into the over-full takeout container; the hundred-mark-temperature outside the vehicle; the distinct and nauseating stench of Japanese mothballs emanating from the white, woolen kimono coat hanging in the south-facing window, I felt no particular urgency as I picked at the food. A side of potatoes—brown and grey with some unknown combination of oil, flour, and salt—floundered in the corner, adopting the shape of the ridges of the container they’d been insistently packed into. Whole yellow seeds, puffed and swollen by the beer they soaked in, had defiantly escaped from the mustard binding them to the underside of my sandwich bread and stuck now, sweetly, to the bottom of the container, where the clarity of their separation kept me from missing any morsel of the meal. I’m in love, I thought to myself, literally, and with more earnestness than I felt when using the same phrase in reference to a person.
Of everything seen, smelled, stepped around in deference to on this trip, it was this sandwich that had meant the most to me. The motel room we’d stayed in, which Mieko had commended for its cleanliness (loudly and repeatedly I might add, very possibly as part of a continuous attempt to reassure me with her vehemence of its possession of the quality) had nonetheless immediately and violently activated the mysophobia I am usually able to suppress, or in some way mitigate. When I had gathered the courage to shower, I did so standing on a soaking washcloth laid on the bathtub basin, keeping my feet from touching the plastic I could not be assured of having been bleached between guests. I had looked with suspicion (and with prejudice, I will admit) upon the woman behind the counter at the 121-year-old Japanese confectionery we’d visited, who didn’t seem to possess any particular accent, much less one which matched the one we’d ordered in. The only star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame I managed to get a decent look at belonged—hilariously—to Matt Damon. I had left Los Angeles in a foul mood: annoyed to have been woken up an hour before the alarm was set to ring out, sorry not to be driving the additional hour to Santa Monica (where United States Highway 66 came to official an end, and which possessed a small, ramshackle, beloved-looking display of Robert “Bob” Waldmire’s artwork, alongside other markers) and immeasurably displeased I hadn’t come across a bookshop of any kind, where, even if it were almost completely charmless, I might have bought some halfway decent postcards on which to proclaim I was “NEVER COMING BACK TO CALIFORNIA!”
Only after two hours of driving did my mood begin to soften. Slowly turning the knob to lower the volume of the Jim Croce track I’d been playing, I asked if we might stop someplace liable to sell postcards. I’d settle for a boutique, I said, not meaning it. Mieko hesitantly suggested Palm Springs, though she hadn’t liked the place when last she’d been.
Beside a Chevron gas pump on the outskirts of town, I abandoned the initial search I’d made of diners, and looked up historic restaurants instead. Less than twenty minutes later, a gentleman was setting two white stoneware mugs of strong coffee down on our table beside a dish of flavored, individual creamers. Missouri law enforcement officials arrested two men after discovering seven children between the ages of 2 to 13 and several adults in the back of a U-Haul box truck during a traffic stop on the interstate, according to reports.
KY3, a local NBC station out of Springfield, Missouri, reported that 31-year-old Shaikiem Bristol and 22-year-old Musa Omar were charged with seven counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
The station reported that, according to court documents, a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol stopped a U-Haul box truck at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday on Interstate 44.
Bristol allegedly told the trooper he and Omar rented a U-Haul box truck in Buffalo, New York, and drove down to Glendale, Arizona, to pick up a woman who had been kicked out of her house by her mother.
When Bristol and Omar were pulled over, Bristol explained to the trooper that they were on their way back up to New York from Arizona.
Two women were in the passenger seat, and Bristol said they were his sister and fiancé.
The women told police a different story — that they traveled to Arizona to pick up some things and visit family.
In the court documents, the trooper noted there were conflicting stories being told by the suspects about the trip, leading the trooper to believe they were involved in criminal activity.
When the trooper asked to search the U-Haul, Bristol reportedly gave permission and said there were beds, clothing and five adults and seven kids in the back.
The trooper called for backup and placed the women and Bristol under arrest.
To prevent anyone from running into traffic on the interstate, police transported the U-Haul to the Webster County Jail for further investigation.
During the investigation, troopers opened the back of the truck and noticed the air was warm and there was no power or air conditioning. Troopers also said there were clothes and food containers in the back, and most of the children removed from the U-Haul had dirty diapers that had not been changed for hours, police alleged.
The occupants in the back were also reportedly sweaty because of the heat.
When questioned by troopers, Bristol allegedly said he did not know why they took the kids on the trip, knowing it was going to be hot.
"That’s why we tried to stop a lot," Bristol told police.
He explained that he and Omar tried to stop every hour and a half to two hours during the trip, so the occupants in the back would not get hot. The two men also reportedly shared driving responsibilities, police said.
The Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Family Services also responded to the scene.
Bristol and Omar were booked into the Webster County Jail and held without bond.
