The way that one of Dean and Cas's earliest bonding moments has them sitting together in front of a playground, watching kids together. (("You misunderstand me, Dean.... These people, they’re all my father’s creations... I’m not a… hammer as you say." They share a look, and DEAN looks out to the kids again.)) They always appreciated kids / had the longing to take CARE of kids. It's no wonder they wound up doing it together.

Listen so I don't think that exact scene was specifically About Children Only, but more about how Dean and Cas are unwilling to sacrifice an entire population of people (or really anyone innocent) for the sake of the "big picture." Like this calls back to Dean refusing to let Ruby kill Nancy (3x12) to save everyone else. And later we learn that Cas had his memory wiped by Naomi because he disagreed with the plan to kill the firstborn of every living creature that didn't have blood on their door (citation here oops).

However, I AGREE with what you're saying deeply. Dean and Cas both love and care about kids. We see it moreso with Dean, who we see crouching down on the floor and speaking in a soft voice to a traumatized boy in literally thee third episode of the show. He adores kids, he secretly would love to have kids, and lets be real, John didn't have a spit of nest empty syndrome when Sam left for Stanford, it was Dean who was going out of his mind.

We do see Cas also showing a paternal side, though!! I don't remember the episode, but when he's traveling with Hannah (in s10?), he interacts with a kid and. Is so soft. He's becoming so human at that point. AND HE SUNG TO THE BABY IN S8. And then he goes after Claire because he feels guilty and fucked up about what he did for her, but it grows from obligation to actual love eventually. AND THEN JACK!!! HE LITERALLY LOSES EVERYTHING FOR JACK TWICE!! HE LOVES THAT BOY SO MUCH.

ALL OF THIS IS TO SAY!! Yeah, I'm not saying the park scene was about them protecting or wanting kids specifically, but that scene is also them laying the foundation of their relationship. They have a Shared Goal (protecting people, caring too much, etc), and are creating an understanding between the two of them. Which eventually will, in a decade, lead to these two gay fucks coparenting children together. Canonically.
