I really do love your writing and Salvage gets me through when I am sad or depressed. However, I was wondering, how do you cope when someone who wrote a review didn’t like your writing? If you’ve had this before… I had one today and I am dejected. I’m working through my perfectionism and I keep telling myself, “my writing isn’t for everyone and it’s okay.” Any advice?
If it was unsolicited, especially on a fanfic? Delete it, block the person if you feel like, then go do your rage activity of choice before forgetting about it forever. That person is rude and doesn't deserve your time anymore than someone bumping into you on the street.
I've also found it useful to actively think of my fanfic as writing practice, and not even my brain expects perfection from writing practice. It also frees you do Try Cool Things.
Now take this digital blanket and cup of hot chocolate and go reread your nice comments.
#most readers are absolutely lovely#But yeah I've gotten these too because there is always someone on the internet who thinks they are Right and Smart and that those things#Are more important than being kind and polite#Fic Reader Etiquette 101: the only writers looking for crits on a fic are the ones that explicitly asked for it#The only potential exception is for typos that impact reading clarity and even then varies by author#I love having any and all typos pointed out but I know some writers Don't Want To Hear It#My worst comment was the person who wrote essentially:#Wow I remember loving this story it had a huge impact on my life but now I reread years later and it's shit#...Honey. HONEY.#please realize that your personal growth and resulting resonance or lack thereof with a story's themes#have literally nothing to do with me#and I hope your next bit of character growth involves internalizing your self-reflection instead of outsourcing it to fanfiction

PUT YOUR AGE IN YOUR BIO
Heads up! I will be blocking minors and no age blogs, so if you don't want to get blocked, please put your age in your bio or at least add an 18+ so I know you are not a minor!
#Please heed my warnings#This is simple etiquette as a user in the internet#My blog will have 18+ posts in the future#The bots are already messaging me#Literally had to block 80 something followers because of this

This is kinda a pet peeve thing but I really don't like DNIs as a concept. Nevermind the fact that I grew up with an Internet where the labels on your profile were the ones you actually identified with (not the other way around), but it also is
A) Inherently against the notion of curating your own online experience. It's a means of putting the responsibility of your boundaries on the other person. If you MUST include a DNI, the better way to do it would be, "I will block you if you're x, y, or z,"
But more importantly, and I've said this before on my main blog, B) it's not safe. All you're doing is giving malicious people more ammunition to hurt you. It's literally like saying "swiper no swiping" and expecting it to work in real life.
I also just think it's kinda mean spirited in general. Proshipper, anti, whatever else, it gives me an inherent bad vibe when I see a DNI. Can you imagine if you tried the same approach to a person's face? They'd probably scoff, at best, because it's just rude and standoffish.

Friendly reminder to the COD fandom: stop having random, personal conversations in the reblog captions of other people’s gif sets and original edits.
For examples of what I mean, see the two screenshots below 👇🏽 They are both from COD fans under my gif sets.

[Image ID – (Left) Two COD fans, whose names and profile pictures have been redacted, @ing each other and discussing a chiropractor under my gif set of John Price from Modern Warfare; and (Right) A COD fan @ing a fanfiction writer about their work under my unrelated gif set of Nikto from Modern Warfare II]
Tumblr introduced the DM system years ago, so that if you want to send a post to another person, you can do so without tagging or @ing them and having a full-blown conversation in the reblogs. Thus, the DM system prevents users from annoying the shit out of the original post's author and others interacting with the post. Whether you like it or not, when you tag/@ other people, we get notified of what you type too.
So, please learn to make use of the DM system. 🙄 This annoying tendency is not exclusive to the COD fandom, I'm sure. But COD fans are most notorious for it, especially because many of you have not had a Tumblr blog for more than a few months and are newbies.
It's rude and inconsiderate to have full blown convos all over a gif maker's post while totally ignoring the gif maker... This total disregard and indifference toward gif makers is even more obvious when I've asked the above users to please move their conversations to their DMs so others don't have to see them, and they do not respond.
#obviously i can't physically stop y'all but y'all could please learn some basic tumblr social cues and internet etiquette#cod fandom critical#call of duty

I just wanna say a thing about rarepairs real quick. I enjoy some rarepairs. I don't typically seek them out, just happen upon them and think "huh, kinda liked that."
A notable one for me would be Eskel x Priscilla from The Witcher 3. I think I first saw them put together in a A/B/O regency AU geraskier fic (saying all that out loud would 100% give me brain rot), and at first I thought it made very little sense, but I came to love it (thank goodness cause they took up almost as much screen time as the main pairing). The characterization of them was so sweet, and I thought their personalities vibed.
I've only stumbled upon this ship in one or two other fics, and never as the main pair due to my tag filtering, but I appreciate it when I see it. If I was really hungry for more content relating to that ship, I would write it myself. Sometimes you have to push your own limits of creativity to bring the things you enjoy to life, especially if they're really niche.

If you come across some accounts making stuff you find morally repugnant, the safest thing you can do is block them and move on.
If you engage with them at all, your social media algorithms are going to put more of it on your feed. If you respond to them, all you're doing is putting it on your friends' feeds as well. If you talk about how bad X, Y, Z, thing is in general, you're going to see more of it, because algorithms pick up on keywords.
If you make callout posts, all that's going to do is invite people to harass you in turn. And listing your traumas and DNIs on your profiles may as well be handing bad actors a list of ways to hurt you the most.
Literally, blocking and moving on is the safest and most effective way to curate your online experience. Yes, it requires a little bit of work on your part, but if you're not willing to be responsible about it, you shouldn't be using social media in the first place.
#internet safety#internet etiquette#internet culture#proship#i dunno what to tag this lol#btw this is strictly about people posting fictional content#please dont what-about me in circles about this

Always rubs me the wrong way when some of y'all insult others in the middle of an analysis.
"Y'all are stupid if you think—"
"There's something wrong with you if—"
"Are you intellectually disabled? There's no way—",
Rein yourselves in, I beg.
Don't get me wrong, I've also gotten heated. And there's no point in hiding, we're all more or less irked when we see something we disagree with.
Yes, it's annoying to see your favourite ship bashed or a character horribly mischaracterized, or someone interpreting a piece of media in a way that does said media a disservice.
Of course, it pisses us off when we come across an opinion that is wildly different to ours. Mostly because the person expressing this opinion does so as if their word is law.
But we've all been there, either online or irl. Sometimes, it's really just done subconsciously.
But for fuck's sake, when making your point, you could stand to avoid presumptuous insults, in the name of respect if nothing else.

Sometimes I get a potential client interaction that is so excessively out of pocket, that so violently wars with my ability to retain some semblance of professionalism that I end up thinking about it for days.
DAYS
#they're actually pretty funny sometimes but my God#the stuff that slides into my DMs and inbox somedays is beyond the pale#please don't ask me for details I will not expose anyone I legit just needed a place to vent finally#because this has been going on for years and years and is likely a common scenario for most creatives#I feel like common courtesy and etiquette just vanishes for some people the minute they get on the internet

as a gay guy, I love the obey me bros and I love ur writing, but idk I just feel so upset reading m!mc x lucifer works because he's like totally my type, but for some reason I feel as though he would never be attracted to another guy. it just makes me so depressed while reading amazing writing like yours that provide content for amab, trans and masc presenting people . Like ill read the work that include him with a female or woman mc and he just seems so in-character, like he truly loves her, but with a guy mc (or even Diavolo!) he feels so out of character and that he'll be homophobic like those typical traditional masculine men. I I feel as though he'll tell me he's not into men if i ever tried to flirt with him and idk beat me up (jkjk) like there's this inner part of me that knows 'Lucifer would never set his eyes on another man', 'he's only gentlemanly to females', and it's only reinforced by the sheer amount of lucifer works that contain fem!mc x lucifer content, as if even those authors know deep down that Lucifer is straight. Sorry for venting, i just want to know that your work in the fandom is appreciated and that i can overcome such internalized hate…
...I appreciate the compliments, but don't send me asks like this, please.
#pansy speaks#I didn't think I was a big enough blog to have this problem#please don't send me vent asks#i'm not a therapist#nor am i your friend#i don't even know who you are#please imagine I am just a stranger on the street and treat me like that#I'm going to assume the sender is a minor who doesn't know internet etiquette#and doesn't know that it's inappropriate to share your very personal problems to a stranger#who has not explicitly said they're okay with such messages#if i write about mental health problems in my fics it's because I have mental health problems#not because i want to hear about yours or am qualified to advise you#i really don't want to be mean#but this makes me WILDLY uncomfortable#don't do this again.

Soooo... This was gonna be a very rage filled rant but thanks to a friend who warned me to either not rant or rant in a calm and collected manner so this is me. Totally calm and collected. Pura calm pura collected Deep breaths
.
.
FUCKING ASSHOLES!!!
.
.
Yeahhh... Now I am good to go. Totally calm and collected.
I love reading manga, watching anime and I am a nerd when it comes to Star Wars, Marvel and DC. So what do I do? I follow every possible tag related to these topics I absolutely love thinking I would come across amazing artwork or backstories or funfacts but what I saw sent me into this rage mode.
Look... I don't care about who you are or what you think but when you take some amazing characters from these franchises and fuck them up by either writing fanfics which are always about either love or sex or just straight up changing their genders, I tend to take that a bit too personally.
You do not touch certain characters. You don't change who they are. You don't mess with them. They are perfect as they are. So stay away.
Now... with these pointless relationship people are dreaming of with these characters. Why? Because I really feel you need to get checked. I don't mind you giving your fantasies life over here but some of them are just disturbing. (Pedo shit )
I saw Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru being shipped. I have seen some artists making them lesbians?
They are classmates! They are rivals! They are best of friends! They are brothers! Don't demolish such great characters.
And this isn't the only one.
My eyes were burnt when I came across Anakin Skywalker being shipped with Obi Wan Kenobi? I had to wash my eyes but the rot had already reached my brain and it was awful. Such brilliant franchies being reduced to this shit is just.... sad.
I feel... Giving people the power to express their thoughts is somehow counterproductive because the people who are expressing their thoughts like a bunch of fools who don't really know what or how to think rationally. Mollycoddled into becoming people who can't think straight and the first response to anything is taking offense and shutting their rational thinking off.
At the risk of sounding regressive, I think the amount of freedom which we have now just feels like a mistake sometimes. Idiots have way too much freedom.
Ending my rant by just saying that there are people who write absolutely amazing fan-fics. They stay true to the character and also write brilliantly.
But the others need to be kicked off the internet.
#fanfic etiquette#if youre gonna write stuff please write good stuff#and if you cant just don't#dont rot the internet#please dont express yourself#jujutsu kaisen#gojo saturo#geto suguru#anakin skywalker#obi wan kenobi

[ID: You cannot censor your tags! Censored tags cannot be blocked or filtered. Censoring tags HARMS your audience, it does not protect them. ID END]
This isn’t just a “new TikTok thing” either. This has been an issue since before TikTok
Not sure if it’s gotten worse or only just entering fandom spaces in a way that more people are noticing, but it’s been a problem even with (Tumblr) tags you wouldn’t necessarily expect it to be like with photosensitivity/flashing light warnings
So yeah, please don’t censor the tags
I just saw a story on AO3 tagged "pet p!ay"
TIK TOK MUST BE STOPPED BEFORE IT DESTROYS LANGUAGE
#internet safety#ao3#tumblr#tagging etiquette#tagging#please don’t censor the tags!#that makes them somewhat useless!

I don't know who needs to hear it, but THIS

IS NOT A SPOILER ALERT WHEN YOU PUT THE DAMN SPOILER ON THE SAME PHOTO AND DON'T BURY IT
Spoiler alerts are meant to give someone the choice on whether or not to spoil themselves. Depending on the platform this means you either bury the spoiler after several coverage images, or you hide the spoiler beneath the cut. Doing things like this is rude as all hell. Putting "spoiler alert" in your caption doesn't mean shit if you just blatantly have the spoiled content visible to anyone scrolling by. If you do this, you're a soggy doughnut, and I'm judging you. Be better. I hate it here
#spoiler#spoilers#spoiler alert#spoiler alerts#jjk#jujutsu kaisen#internet etiquette#this is gremlin behavior#please use your brain out here#on tumblr we can filter tags but you cant do that on other sites#people shouldnt have to keep up with chapter leaks or stay completely off the Internet to stay surprised#i feel like this behavior is just getting worse#like we used to crucify people for doing this shit but now when you go in the comments youll just see people like “😭”#like please get angry about it im begging#im heated#i dont even care about the spoiler im more mad about the lack of tact and consideration for others

I should probably start being more unhinged on tumblr instead of twitter. Twitter's bad enough, it does not need my screams of sad. also the tumblrats might be slightly starved for art, Idktho

You are responsible for your own emotional destiny
Stuff kids on tumblr better relearn
1. You are responsible for your own media experience.
2. There is such a thing as a healthy level of avoidance towards topics that make you feel unwell or even (in a real-life clinical definition of the term) trigger you - but you are the one to actively take care of what you view.
3. Avoiding does not mean policing others.
4. You have no right to tell artists to censor themselves - you may criticize what others do, you may dislike it, that’s fine - but actively asking for censorship when you could easily unfollow or block a person just makes you look incompetent in your use of the internet.
5. Do not give people on tumblr or /any/ website the responsibility for your emotional well-being. Because these people do not even know you so no, you have no right to ask them to take care of you.
