My love of intergenerational stories is well known. There's something about the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren in particular that just translates beautifully to stories for young children. So for our second story for the upcoming Jewish holiday this week, I've chosen "The Art Lesson: A Shavuot Story" (2017) by Allison and Wayne Marks, illustrated by Annie Wilkinson. This one is a sweet, light-hearted story about Shoshana, a little girl who loves spending time with her artist grandmother each week, and the special artwork they create to decorate for Shavuot, based on crafts from her grandmother's own childhood. Instructions in the back to create papercut artwork of your own, as well as information about artists mentioned in the story, add a little something extra to the book. A great story both for the holiday and artistic kids in general! 🎨 🎨 🎨 #NoodlenutsKidsBooks #TheArtLesson #AShavuotStory #Shavuot #Shavuos #AllisonMarks #WayneMarks #AllisonandWayneMarks #AnnieWilkinson #PJLibrary #Bubby #Bubbie #intergenerational #intergenerationalstories #grandmothersandgranddaughters #grandma #artlessonsforkids #chagall #modigliani #artforkids #JewishBooks #JewishHolidays (at Bubbie's House) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAsnRMHnViX/?igshid=1qj03i0spv4kt

There are few things I love more than a good intergenerational story, particularly those that model great relationships between grandparents and grandkids. Zachary Hyman's "The Magician's Secret" (2017), magnificently illustrated by Joe Bluhm, is a new favourite in that genre. Reminiscent at first of the beloved "Song and Dance Man" by Karen Ackerman in that it centers on a grandfather's recounting his adventures during quality time spent with his grandson, this book takes a turn away from realistic-but-entertaining memories and instead veers off into the fantastic. It's a beautiful exploration of imagination and the magic of shared adventures through storytelling. A wonderful, exciting read-aloud. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #themagicianssecret #zacharyhyman #zachhyman #joebluhm #jewishauthors #jewishauthor #magic #grandfathers #grandparentsandgrandkids #intergenerational #intergenerationalstories #adventurestories #picturebooklove #magicofchildhood #storytime #teachergram #booktime #schoollibrary #kidswhoread #picturebooksofinstagram #booksforteachers #lifelongreaders #canadianauthor #canadiankidlit #bluespruce #shiningwillow https://www.instagram.com/p/B4f8SGGnO0m/?igshid=qwbd2vswms4g

I'm a big fan of grandparents, in general. And as I've mentioned before, I love an intergenerational story. While I'm fond of the sweet ones, though, my favourites are the ones with some humour, like "The Frank Show" (2012) by David Mackintosh. 👴👴👴 When a little boy has to bring a family member to speak at school, he makes it known that he'd prefer a cool uncle like his friend's, or even one of his parents. Instead, the only one available is his crabby, cantankerous grandpa, Frank, who thinks nothing measures up to "the old days". But maybe, given a chance, Grandad Frank might be more interesting than anticipated... A wonderful, funny story about family and not making assumptions. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #thefrankshow #davidmackintosh #curmudgeon #oldmen #grandfather #grandad #grandpa #thegoodolddays #intergenerational #intergenerationalstories #family #reading #childhoodmemories #homeschoolfamily #childrensbook #picturebooks #booksthatmatter #welovereading #firstgradeteacher #teacherinspiration #classroombookaday #whyweread #readingforgrowth #talkaboutbooks #englishcurriculum #booksforbetter #familytogetherness #booksaboutfamily https://www.instagram.com/p/B3u3Tyjnxwu/?igshid=3lfo7ykop2yw

We all know how I love clever wordplay! Well, tomorrow night marks the start of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It's the most solemn and arguably the most important day of the Jewish Year, when we fast, reflect upon the last year and mistakes we've made or people we've hurt, and ask forgiveness to begin anew for the year to come. "Talia and the Very YUM Kippur" (2015) is a fabulous book for explaining this day to kids. Author Linda Elovitz Marshall takes a key misunderstanding--that of the difference between break[ing]-fast and breakfast--and plays with it, as young Talia helps her grandmother prepare for the holiday, and slowly learns that joy is not only about celebration, but also about meaningful reconnection with those we love. A gentle, lovely introduction for ANY child, with adorable pictures by Francesca Assirelli, to an important Jewish holy day. ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #LokshenNuts #JewishNoodlenuts #TaliaandTheVeryYumKippur #lindaelovitzmarshall #francescaassirelli #karben #karbenpublishing #yomtov #yomkippur #breakingthefast #gmarchatimatova #highholidays #jewishhighholidays #jewishholidays #jewishkids #jewishchildren #jewishbooks #jewishpicturebooks #jewishkidsbooks #jewishchildrensbooks #intergenerational #intergenerationalstories #grandparentsandgrandkids #diversebooksforkids #weneeddiversebooks #ReadWithRiver_food https://www.instagram.com/p/B3VNvlLnAPS/?igshid=uqsew8mfve8e

Occasionally, already-popular books are worth continued promotion. There is so much to love about Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson's "Last Stop on Market Street" (2015) that although many of you may be familiar with it, I felt compelled to share it here for those who aren't. 📚📙📗 A wonderful intergenerational story, "Last Stop" is an upbeat reminder that picture books can reflect the reality of our world without being sad. It reminds us that not everyone lives in a beautiful suburb, drives a car, has lots of money, and that that's just fine. The use of dialect reminds us that not everyone speaks the same way, but the story is clear that we all need to communicate with each other. Robinson's art brings the city to life with colour even in what is supposed to be a dingy neighbourhood. A lovely ode to urban life, and seeing the good in things. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #laststoponmarketstreet #laststop #marketstreet #mattdelapena #mattdelapeña #christianrobinson #newberyaward #newberymedal #caldecott #caldecotthonor #caldecotthonorbook #corettascottkingaward #corettascottkingillustratorhonor #notablechildrensbook #awardwinning #awardwinner #grandmother #grandson #intergenerationalstories #intergenerational #diversebooksforkids #weneeddiversebooks #sundaysout #afterchurch #blackkids #brownkids #representationmatters #diversitymatters https://www.instagram.com/p/B168ZaxHQCm/?igshid=bk7xovj8i2f7
