Random takes on ahsoka ep 5
Okay actually spoilers this time
Thesis statement: Ep5 was absolutely ridiculous and I loved every second of it
For those wondering what it would look like if the peak of Zirakzigil and King’s Cross smashed into each other at a thousand miles an hour…
YASSSSS THIS IS THE ANGST CONTENT I SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED. I’m not even gonna think about it for a minute just gonna sit here and wallow
Ohhhh he’s got the early season CW armor on he’s just a little guy <3
[Referring to the Teensoka section] Man I was emotionally prepared to hate whatever this was gonna be but I really liked it. Like, multiple different character beats that all hit really well. Nice job guys.
When you’re 45 and just learning what intergenerational trauma is. Better late than never
Why is S7 Teensoka so short. I just think Ahsoka from ~S7 onward should be freakishly tall and yes I know Rosario Dawson isn’t super tall but let me have this
I guess there’s an argument to be made that all Ahsoka character beats get executed multiple times (lookin’ at you, Vader reveal) but guys. Guyyyyyyyys. How many times can she go swimming and then return as Gandalf the Orange because I’m counting three now (I feel like world between worlds and rebels finale are separate level-ups, but if you see them as one beat I’d throw Mortis into the mix). Admittedly part of that might be that I’ve been taking post-Rebels S2 Sith Temple Baptism as canon and I guess not everyone watching this show became completely feral in May 2016
This is totally unrelated but omigod those were Topps cards? The makers of Dinosaurs Attack? Universes are colliding for me rn
Huh we’ve never seen how her face and her montrals meet up before. And… I’m not sure I like it. Put the headband back on
Yeah I know we all knew the white robe was coming but Dave. Dave this is a lot. Like she has white gloves now? And white boots?? ([Channels Bojack Horseman] Do you get it? Do you get my joke?)
Also possibly unpopular opinion but I’m just sayin’ white isn’t her color. The combo with her montrals just makes her look washed out.
Alternative hypothesis: the white clothing is the spare outfit she hates but hasn’t gotten around to getting rid of yet and the grays are coming back as soon as they’re out of the drier
Alternative alternative hypothesis: Seatos’ ocean is 0.1% bleach.
Oh sweet baby Space Jesus she can do psychometry now. She hit level 20 at Malachor and just kept taking levels anyway. My blorbo is op and I can’t even be mad
I’m not even gonna touch “surviving without oxygen for several hours without even intentionally meditating”
Suddenly realized we’re more than halfway thru this show and we haven’t seen Thrawn and we still don’t have any substantial information about the Dark Jedi so like… who is the villain? Is it intergenerational trauma? Please tell me it’s intergenerational trauma
Why do space whales have baleen? Oh to filter feed on midichlorians. Never mind I retract my question
Aaaand Filoni just hit “Jonah” on his Biblical Hero Dartboard
So you wasted billions of dollars on this technology when you could have just asked a whale nicely? How embarrassing.
Come to think of it tho why didn’t Ezra just take a whale BACK? Then again if I start thinking too much about this it’s just gonna devolve into “How Rebels Should Have Ended”

The way you write Ingo and Akari's interactions with each other never fails to warm my heart. And after seeing how he is with Rei in oop, I'm so excited to see how Emmet interacts with Akari. And let's not forget how your Cyllene is with Rei, and how she considers him Her Boy. I just love the intergenerational relationships you have going on. Kids deserve to have good adults in their lives, especially ones like Akari and Rei who have had it so rough.
There are... a lot of things I don't like about many interpretations of Emmet in fandom, but one I especially dislike is when he's overly rude or dismissive towards the kids. You avoid that trap neatly, though that's no surprise because the way you write him is one of my all time favorites. That's maybe a bit beside the point though.
In any case, I loved the little prompt snippets you wrote yesterday about Ingo with both Akari and Rei. The one you wrote with Rei was both cool and heartbreaking with how his dedication and care was the only thing keeping him going, all so Rei might have the chance to live. And the one Akari was so sweet and heartwarming, with how gentle his love for her was. She doesn't know it, but Ingo's home isn't a place, like her it's the people he cares about, and she's included in that too now. In this au where he's so close to her, it wouldn't be complete without her there.
WAAAAH THIS IS SUCH A NICE ASK?? THANK YOU?? thank you so much... i'm gonna cry this is so sweet. thank youuuu... i uh rambled a lot about characters and relationships so i'm going to put the rest of that under. a cut i think. contd:
anyway. YEAH re: kids deserving Good Adults. tbh whenever i see a kid on their own in fiction it activates some kind of primal pack bonding instinct in me to protect them, so this is like, vicarious parenting. and i just REALLY like characters who are Good With Kids, it's like one of my fav character traits that makes me instantly love them. and i love all the different ways that can come through, like, like you said, cyllene who isn't so great at saying how she feels but has SO adopted these two. so. yes. this is primarily self indulgent. it all comes back to my love of picking apart character motivations lol
also WHO is making emmet not nice to kids. i'll fight them. i'll duel them in the street right now. why is everyone else so WRONG about my BLORBO. i think- not to Also get sidetracked, lol, but- i think emmet is someone who's extremely straightforward with everything he says, and doesn't back down, but the critical thing is that all that blunt directness and stubbornness is backed by an intense motivation to help and protect others. so that's what i'm trying to channel when he's with rei or anyone else—specifically because he doesn't try to hedge his words or anything, it is so obvious at all times that he Cares and wants to Help. which can be like, intensely validating/reassuring/trust-building. like short and direct and not good at subtlety don't have to be negative asshole-building character traits!! ...but uhh anyway what were we talking about again
ingo ficlets right. YEAHH THANK YOU... i think in comparison to emmet ingo is like. actually good with people, in the sense that he can read peoples' emotions from their words and actions much better, and is very understanding and patient. and obviously he's also driven by that same compassion. trying really hard not to just make this about comparing how i characterize them both ANYWAY. and i am giving him the Parenting Instincts, lol, which, i think he has an immediate reaction of "oh i need to help you" when he sees anyone who's lost/hurt/confused, but it's stronger with kids bc they obviously tend to have less ability to support themselves. so with akari in the adoption fic i keep gesturing towards and Not Finishing, and rei in the ficlet who got separated from his usual crew, he just adopts them very quickly lol. (there's also something to be said there for how i usually write amnesiac-ingo as having a kind of busted self-perception, as we've covered, so he's outsourcing his motivation and desire to continue living to others, which is sort of a Not Great aspect of this, but uhh that's getting sidetracked again)
anyway YEAH!! his home is his loved ones!! yessss exactly!! you have it spot on, i think in that snippet after akari brings it up he does have that thought of, all he has to judge his "home" by is a vague vibe that it was good and he misses it. what if it isn't as perfect as his non-memory thinks it is? what if it can't/won't make space for akari? in which case i think that despite how much he misses it, he would be fully prepared to walk out of it for her. because like you said, his home isn't a place, it's the people!! so if akari can't belong there, then it isn't his home, either. (not that it would ever come to that in reality)
so. yes. as you can probably tell i could go on about this subject forever. just adhd tangent after tangent about kids, and the ways they get treated, and what it says about characters, and character motivations in general, and bitching about how my blorbo gets misinterpreted. but. my point is. this was a very nice ask i am going to print it out and tape it in my diary thank you

Me: *Shaves off the serial numbers on three of my blorbos to make a horny BDSM series* The Series: *morphs to include series notes about intergenerational trauma and the ways adult children will both sacrifice to protect their parents and strain against the ways their parents try to control them "for their own good" before I even finish outlining the first two books* Me: oh no

For the Fan Fic emoji ask: 🥺💖🤩 and most importantly✨
🥺 - moments/interactions between characters that give me FEELINGS
I am obsessed with parents realising that they’ve failed their kids somehow, even though they tried their best with the resources they were given, and hoping their children forgive them, but understanding if they don’t — especially if said parent dies while still not really KNOWING.
… The fact that it took me so long to realise many of my works are about intergenerational trauma in some capacity is hilarious in hindsight. 😅
💖 - what made you start writing?
I don’t really remember a time in my life when I wasn’t writing in some capacity, which was also a hilarious realisation in hindsight, because it truly took me almost thirty years to comprehend that other people don’t feel this burning urge to articulate all of their thoughts on the outside.
But yeah. I struggle to articulate my thoughts without imagining an audience, and growing up as an only child made writing a very accessible format to me :P I think I just never appreciated how regular my writing practice was because it was always just like. Jotted down on random bits of paper as a kid, or in long rambly texts to friends (my partner and I used to regularly send each other 1000+ word text messages on a daily basis before we moved in together, and immediately revert back to it whenever we’re apart for more than a few days, lol).
This reminds me, I really need to back up my high school era LJ at some point because I was regularly writing 1000+ word posts about my feelings on there, I just didn’t consider it “real writing” bc I think honestly until I started doing heaps of exchanges the other year, I never really wrote with any intent, I just literally cannot shut up.
tl;dr: adhd probably 🥲😅
🤩: favourite character to write
it’s usually my favourite love interest of whoever my blorbo is at the time! so currently that’s Orsino from Dragon Age, who I find much easier to write than Meredith 😅
✨: give my own writing a compliment!
I’ve been told often enough that my strength lies in clear, readable prose and strong distinct character voices that I’m starting to believe it 🫣
Also, I’m really proud of the improvements I’ve made in placing/plotting over the last couple of years — I can write things where stuff actually happens now!

🍊 Who’s a character you don’t write for that often, but keep meaning to write for more? (They’re so interesting! But maybe you have trouble pinning them down, or keep getting distracted by another blorbo…)
🍊Robert Quarles.
I've only written (1) fic for him to exorcise some personal demons. He's such a twisted and terrifying character. Writing for him requires going into a dark and heavy space though. I'm not so sure I'd write another fic focused on him again, but I'd still like to revisit his headspace someday.
He's a picture-perfect villain character with all sorts of interesting issues that fit so well into Justified's themes of intergenerational trauma and local VS outsider conflicts. I've been wanting to use him as an antagonist in future fics! Especially in paranormal/supernatural AUs. That husky man was born to play a werewolf.

Am not quite old enough to qualify for fandom hag squad membership (only early 40s here) but the intergenerational nature of fandom communities is one of their CHIEF JOYS.
Where the hell else in your life are you going to find people to squee and get delulu about your blorbos AND ALSO people of the right age to explain what the hell squee and delulu and blorbo mean?!
You're not embarrassed being an old woman and being in tumblr? I would rather die that my grannies have an actual account on tumblr for celebrities rho
Why would I be embarrassed for having interests I enjoy? My guess is that you’re really, really young. And that maybe you don’t actually have solid relationships with adults who have lives outside of parenting or work. But I hope for you that when you’re my age you have hobbies that bring you happiness. And that by that point you realize that trying to shame someone for being an adult only makes you look too immature to be in adult spaces, which Tumblr is.
When I was 20, I loved music, making art, writing and reading good stories, fashion, talking about popular culture, making friends, going to concerts… You’d be surprised how little changes when you’re my age. I just have way more money and time to enjoy those things now. I’m only 55. I’m not dead. I’m also not a “granny”, but even if I was, I’d probably still like all of those things.
Ageism isn’t cute, love. And I sure don’t ever see people telling men they shouldn’t go to football games or have their little “fantasy football leagues” or wear their favorite player’s merch. For every comment you guys like to say is misogynistic (but isn’t), this is one that really reeks of it.

I am seeing a lot of takes on Frankenstein about how seeing the creature as Victor Frankenstein’s son voids literally all other interpretations of the relationship between the creature and Victor. Just because the parent-child parallels are to your preferred interpretation does not mean parallels to The Pygmalion (Victor as artist, creature as sex object), the golem (Victor as master, creature as slave), Genesis/Paradise Lost (Victor as god, creature as Adam or Satan) are not valid and are inherently immoral to analyze the text as.
Like the Pygmalion interpretation is very old and aside from a few jokes on it it’s boring because it’s been done to death. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the Rocky Horror Picture Show? Or am I just too old now, and nobody knows about that?
The passages about trying to build the creature as specifically beautiful have long been interpreted as sexual — and it’s weird honestly to be interpreting this as incestuous/pedophilic because the creature is built out of unrelated, found cadavers, has no mind yet, and Victor does not even know that his mind will be childlike for any period of time. Victor is essentially making a sculpture at that point, and the idea that it’s somehow pedophilic/incestuous to find a sculpture of an unrelated 8 ft tall adult man sexy, or to deliberately try to build one as sexually appealing is bizarre. Any arguments that Victor somehow “should have known” the creature would have a childish mind or to conceive of himself as “father” while building him fall flat because 1) Victor lacks foresight in everything he does, that’s his major character flaw 2) in popular depictions he’s literally salvaging whole body parts, so he’s using adult brains from adults who already had families unrelated to him to build the creature. Consent issues here abound with bringing a specific person, essentially, or an amalgamation of several people, back to life without consent, especially in a different body, but in contrast these are never brought up 3) Victor is doing something that has never been done before so he has no idea what would happen.
Also weird to me how the same people who keep wanting us to take Victor Frankenstein as literal father of the creature and therefore find any proposed sexualization of the creature by him disgusting, tend to not do the same of the creature’s demands for a female companion. These demands are absolutely sexual, and if Victor is his literal father, the female creature would be his literal sister — and his final inspiration for demanding this was looking at the woman pictured in the locket around William’s neck, his literal grandmother.
I personally find the building of the creature more interesting as seen as embodiment fantasy more, or at least more fertile ground for new interpretations, in part because it’s hard to top the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I also find the lack of Genesis/Paradise Lost interpretations here weird considering those parallels are literally drawn in the text. The interpretation of master/slave is also something that’s literally in the text, and slavery abolition was something that was literally ongoing in the British empire at the time the book was written, yet I’ve only seen this parallel brought up in more academic papers. Even if it doesn’t seem relevant to us playing with blorbos today I do think it’s relevant to understanding the text. Parent-child relationship between Victor and the creature is absolutely a valid textual interpretation and the one in vogue right now, probably because of the popularity of intergenerational trauma stories today, but it’s absolutely not the only “correct” interpretation.

TMA for the Blorbo etc meme!
Tumblr media
Blorbo: Jon or Martin. They're just wonderful, and complex, no notes, good little guys.
Skrunkly: the anatomy class! Except the one who became a cop.
Scrimblo Blimbo: Agnes, Oliver, and Adelard. All three shaped the narrative as we knew it: all three deserved better, I am kissing them on the cheek with permission and happy to be burnt for it
Glub Shitto: Why Was Graham Eating Paper Jonny
Also: statement 100 dog walking guy. Just left the spiral since he'd be late for dinner. Love him
Poor little Meow Meow: Simon Fairchild and Mike Crew. Polite intergenerational wealth having bastards who lord their power over others, and yet. I love these little ducks
Horse Plinko: Elias/ Jonah would be so confident going in. I would lead him to the plinko cask of amontilliado style. Let him bargain with the uncomprehending concrete plinths.

1, 31, and 32!
I've answered 1 here, so I've skipped down to the next question I'm yet to answer! 3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics? Someone on an anon meme once described my brand as 'characters with complicated relationships resolve their problems through hugging', which I felt was rather accurate. A lot of my writing is putting characters who are angry or annoyed at each other and going now kiss tbh. Otherwise, I write a lot of characters studies about morally grey parents (and villains in general), and just themes surrounding intergenerational trauma, basically.
31. What’s your ideal fic length to write? I mostly write one-shots, and I think generally without any planning or restraints, most of my fics end up somewhere in the 2.5k - 4k ballpark? It's getting gradually longer over the years, so maybe by the time I'm forty, 6k will be my ideal fic length 😂 32. What’s your ideal fic length to read?
I'm so behind on my reading backlog that I'm barely touching anything over 5k atm, but if time wasn't a limitation, honestly probably anything 60k or under.
Over 60k, I find fics tend to meander and I start to lose interest, unless the fic is more focused on interpersonal drama and character developmental than an overarching plot/external fic, in which case it can be like 10 million words if someone wants to write about my blorbos it's fine 😂 Questions for Fic Writers
