Developing Cross-Cultural Competence as a Coach
In our globalized world, cross-cultural competence has emerged as a vital skill, particularly in the realm of coaching. Coaches, tasked with guiding young adults through their formative years, must navigate a mosaic of cultures, beliefs, and values. This complex task demands more than empathy and understanding; it requires a deep knowledge of diverse cultural backgrounds. A coach equipped with cross-cultural competence can create a nurturing environment that respects and celebrates diversity, fostering growth and learning among young adults from all walks of life.
Developing cross-cultural competence begins with self-awareness. Coaches must first examine their own cultural biases and assumptions, challenging them to broaden their perspectives. This foundational step ensures that their guidance is free from prejudice, enabling them to connect with young adults on a truly empathetic level. Self-reflection leads to enlightenment, a crucial attribute for coaches striving to make a positive impact in a multicultural world.
Education plays a pivotal role in cultivating cross-cultural competence. A coach dedicated to lifelong learning about different cultures demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity. This pursuit of knowledge is not just academic; it involves active engagement with diverse communities. By participating in cultural events, learning new languages, or simply sharing stories, coaches enrich their understanding and appreciation of the world's rich tapestry of cultures. This holistic approach to education empowers them to guide young adults with authenticity and depth.
Effective communication transcends language barriers. It's about understanding the subtleties of non-verbal cues and the nuances of cultural expressions. Coaches proficient in cross-cultural communication can bridge gaps, fostering an environment where every young adult feels heard and understood. This skill is especially important in resolving conflicts and building trust, ensuring that coaching sessions are safe spaces for exploration and growth.
Empathy and adaptability are the heart and soul of cross-cultural competence. A coach who empathizes with individuals from different backgrounds can tailor their approach to meet the unique needs of each young adult. This flexibility enables coaches to design personalized strategies that resonate with the individual's cultural identity, enhancing the effectiveness of their coaching. It's about seeing the world through their eyes, understanding their challenges, and celebrating their achievements.
In our interconnected world, cross-cultural competence enriches the coaching experience, preparing young adults for the global stage. Coaches who champion cultural diversity equip their clients with the skills and mindset needed to navigate a world where intercultural interactions are the norm. This preparation goes beyond personal development; it's about fostering global citizens capable of contributing to a more inclusive and harmonious world.
For parents seeking coaching for their young adults, choosing a coach with cross-cultural competence is a decision that extends beyond individual growth. It's an investment in a future where their children are not just successful in their personal and professional lives but are also compassionate and culturally aware individuals. Such coaching doesn't just transform individuals; it contributes to a world where diversity is celebrated, and unity is strengthened.
In conclusion, developing cross-cultural competence is not just a skill for coaches; it's a necessity in today's globalized society. It enables coaches to provide holistic and inclusive guidance, preparing young adults for a future that values diversity and collaboration. For parents, investing in a coach who embodies these values is a step towards a brighter, more inclusive future for their children.

pacing the room. Orsimer using the suffix "-wife" as a gender-neutral community title indicating one's functional social position rather than an exclusively marital term. ex: "forgewife" meaning a master blacksmith, under whom aspiring blacksmiths train; these are the people overseeing your most important smithing jobs and making sure your up-and-coming smiths are just as well-versed in fine detailing as they are in practicality and function. a community wife is therefore an authority figure of a kind, yes, but also one who has chosen to give as much of themselves as they can to the community IRT their specific skills; community members who hold a level of authority necessarily have a corresponding responsibility to their people.
orcish communal living requires a level of bracing yourself against your neighbors/allowing your neighbors to brace themselves against you that differs from more individualistic societies, which necessitates that the nuclear family be less of a rigid structure. children are the responsibility of every adult - you get just as much instruction and discipline and love from your fifty not-blood-related aunts and uncles as you do from your mom and dad. who you go home to at night is your individual thread in the many-stranded rope that makes up the community; if someone in your household needs help, then, you're their most immediate line of support. taking on the role of a wife (again, used as a gender-neutral term) in the context of a marriage therefore is saying "I choose to share first responsibility for your wellbeing."
this distinction leads to some interesting intercultural miscommunication - an outsider unfamiliar with orcish culture hearing about the existence of a forgewife, huntwife, herdwife, etc., assumes the title is being used in the way they're familiar with and that the chieftain has several wives by marriage; an orc unfamiliar with outside cultures learns the word "housewife" and assumes the title is being used in the way they're familiar with.
#Mouse talks!#something like 'fishwife' at least is mutually understandable interculturally (though the nuance is different)#ESO giving that one pamphlet author the title 'Immigration-Wife'... validating me#more specialized governmental roles like that are likely only found in 4E in like. Orsinium itself.#okay NOW going to bed. just thinking aloud as it were!!

Thing in my drafts I found inspired by a conversation between me and @librathefangirl about intercultural communication in nnt. Original post:
Another interesting thing to play into is how they view skills and hobbies is the goddess / demon culture shock they must experience in the human world. Elizabeth and Meliodas might have totally outside-the-box-ways of solving complex issues that humans can't imagine because well, in their realms, different things are possible. People they've encountered may consider them airheaded for things that any demon or goddess may conclude.
This phemonemon would happen to fairies and giants too, but demons and goddesses have always had a much more complicated view of humans due to their respective cultures. And vice versa. Fairies were straight up gone (?) from the Britannia dimension for centuries, while the giants mainly maintained a buisness relationship with humans. Of the races, therefore, I would say humans would have the best general understanding of giant culture. They know the least about fairies, and their understanding of goddess and demon culture equally sucks due to propoganda and the war.
Some example ideas!
Elizabeth doesn't know how human city planning works and can name maybe sixteen human colors. Five of these, she's told, do not exist. In her human lives she's been fascinated with both architecture and abstract art, and enjoyed hobbies involving both. The notion that someone would commit tax fraud is something she cannot wrap her mind around. Paperwork in the celestial realm is hella efficient. But POLITICAL fraud / detail oriented drama happens all the time and she knows 73 ways to shut it down quickly. More than half of these would result in the offender being openly shunned / banished by goddess politicians and she is not able to replicate them in human society.
Meliodas knows exactly what the mantis shrimp colors Elizabeth identifies are called, but only in demon. He thinks not being able to understand the “more intelligent” Britannia animals is a skill issue on his part. He has spent several centuries trying to get horses to respond to him the way dragons have in the past (that one scene from the new movie killed me). Because human adults rarely have the type of respect toward creatures he's used to seeing in the demon realm (they keep trying to tell him that no plants aren't sentient, not even certain types of plant, what do you mean just ask them not to damage the road with their root system?) he takes advice on wildlife mainly from children, witches, and Horse Girls TM. King won't correct him because that would mean unraveling 3,000 years of tales and explaining that there is no pixie that ritualistically collects human teeth. If you ask Meliodas why he thinks someone would possibly want to collect teeth he will tell you incredibly specific stories about the demons in his army who do so, including a sweet-tempered general who wears necklaces of her ancestors’ fangs and considers it her most wholesome family tradition. Her particular necklace weighs almost ten pounds. King does not want to think any more about demon teeth than he already has.
Thoughts?

The racial aspects of Sci Fi, Fantasy and other forms media
NO. 1
One of the blog posts I have written before was titled ‘Mean World Syndrome’, which talked about how race and media affects everyone on a global scale. Racial aspects of sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media have long been a source of controversy. From the stereotypes of aliens in Star Trek to the whitewashing of characters in movies like Avatar, Prince of Persia, etc. these issues have been a major source of discussion in the media landscape. In many cases, racial stereotypes have been used to create a sense of ‘otherness’ for the characters of color in order to reinforce a sense of white superiority. This has led to criticism from fans, activists, and academics who have called for more representation of people of color in sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media.
NO. 2
In the entertainment business, inclusivity is hard to come by, and in some cases, the representation of characters of color in these genres is inadequate and often offensive. Characters of color are often relegated to the sidelines and made to serve as the backdrop to white characters’ stories, or they are depicted as tokens and stereotypes. This lack of meaningful representation has led to a push for more diverse casts in sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media. ‘‘Like many social sciences, international/intercultural/interethnic communication and media studies are primarily an Anglo-American media images have always been critically dissected, often by scholars with some kind of privileged tie to other cultures—Most makers of these blockbusters are mostly white males with English as their mother tongue, mutli-millionaires or aspiring to become one as soon as possible. They usually internalize a mid-Atlantic view of global history and geography, its central myths and legends. So many blockbusters remain ethnocentric, even today—they tend to make non-Westerners look at the world through Western eyes.’’
NO.3
In addition to representation in the stories themselves, the casting of actors to bring these characters to life has been another source of debate. Many actors of color have argued that they are often typecast into roles that are stereotypical or that do not reflect the true diversity of the world. Films or TV shows with fantasy/sci-fi themes on Netflix, like Chambers or Raising Dion are not being properly advertised because, like Inclusive Advertising: What’s Holding the Industry Back? claims, ‘‘The industry itself is not diverse: The advertising industry — across the ecosystem and at all levels — is not representative, which is itself a barrier to creating representative and inclusive content. Only 19% of in-house and 23% of agency survey respondents reported that their leader almost always considers the demographic diversity of their team when developing content. That, and individuals (in these marketing companies) lack awareness of and access to the knowledge, skills, resources, and tools to create representative and inclusive content. Individuals are confident in their ability to create representative and inclusive content, but only if provided with adequate tools and resources.’’
NO. 4
Of course, there will always be people who dislike seeing a more diverse setting, especially against the established order of Western ‘‘whiteness’’ ideologies. Ultimately, the best way to ensure diversity in these genres is to continue to create stories that feature diverse characters and cultures. If authors, producers, and casting directors make a conscious effort to create more imaginative stories that are inclusive and reflective of the real world, then audiences will be able to experience a more authentic and meaningful experience.

I managed this semester to be teaching two classes that are basically media literacy but from slightly different perspectives (one as a general ‘New Media’ and another through video games) and honestly it’s like the most fulfilling teaching work I’ve ever done. It’s teaching these students who are like 18-21 years old how to engage and think critically about the media environment around them and become better community members in the process. I just think it’s so massively important to learn these skills and I think I’m legitimately good at teaching media criticism and literacy. Next semester I won’t have a similar media class (I’m probably just teaching intro com studies and intercultural com) but like, please, I just want to teach people useful analysis and to view the world in different ways.

"... universities were never meant to be merely career-prep schools. They also teach — or should teach — students how to think deeply and critically, analyze smartly, bring people together collaboratively, communicate articulately, as well as innovate and create...
They also happen to be traits highly valued by employers. According to a 2013 survey, more than 90% of employers agree that “demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important” than an applicant’s college major, and that ethical judgment, integrity, intercultural skills and the ability to continue learning also were key..."

2050: A Multilingual World ? The Rise of Linguistic Diversity.
In 2050, the world could witness a major evolution, with the rise of linguistic diversity. While English is currently considered the dominant international language, the global linguistic landscape is changing significantly, with a growing recognition of the importance of regional and local languages. This transformation could have a profound impact on how people communicate, interact and perceive the world around them.
One of the main reasons for this rise in linguistic diversity is the rise of translation and communication technologies. Rapid advances in artificial intelligence have led to the development of more accurate and accessible instant translation systems. These tools allow individuals to easily communicate in their mother tongue, while being understood by interlocutors speaking other languages. This ease of communication transcends language barriers and encourages the use of regional and local languages.
In addition, movements for regional autonomy and cultural recognition have also contributed to the rise of linguistic diversity. People who have long been marginalized because of their languages have begun to claim their right to cultural and linguistic expression. Governments and international institutions have gradually become aware of this demand and have put in place policies to preserve and promote minority languages. This official recognition strengthened the cultural identity of many language groups and encouraged their daily use.
In this context, the notion of "dominant language" is losing its importance. While English continues to be a widely used language in international business and global communication, it is increasingly complemented by other languages that are gaining influence. Regional and local languages become essential tools for preserving traditions, strengthening cultural identity and interpersonal communication. Thus, instead of focusing solely on learning English, individuals are encouraged to embrace the richness of linguistic diversity and develop multilingual skills.
This rise in linguistic diversity also has economic and political implications. Companies and international organizations must adapt their communication strategies to address a multilingual audience. Governments must develop inclusive language policies to ensure equal opportunities and citizen participation for all. Education systems need to reform their curricula to promote local, regional and international language learning.
However, despite these positive developments, challenges remain. The preservation of endangered languages remains an important struggle. Some languages may still be marginalized by factors such as globalization and urbanization. It is essential to put in place concrete policies and measures to preserve linguistic diversity and avoid the irreversible loss of unique languages and cultures.
In conclusion, by 2050, the world could evolve towards a multilingual linguistic landscape, with increasing recognition of linguistic and cultural diversity. Technological advances, the growing demand for regional autonomy and the increased awareness of the importance of regional and local languages are all factors contributing to this transformation. However, to take full advantage of the benefits of this increase in linguistic diversity, it is essential to promote inclusive policies, invest in language education and online training to preserve endangered languages. YSEALI Alumni Highlight on World Refugee Day: Clarissa Tanurahardja
"Growing up in a multicultural family was a blessing in disguise for me. My big family is a melting pot of various cultures with intercultural marriages and diverse religions. However, as I grew up in Indonesia, it was not easy to look and feel different from my peers. As an Indonesian Chinese, I researched and learned that most people like me were killed in the 1998 riot in Indonesia, or most of them became refugees and sought protection in the resettlement country.
I'm passionate about the human rights of refugees, as they deserve equal fulfillment of their rights to education and well-being, as all of us do. I joined Sandya Institute in 2017 as Program Director, where together with youth volunteers, we advocate for peacebuilding and the rights of minority groups in Indonesia. Together with my best friend at Sandya Institute, we co-founded Sunrise Refugee Learning Center, which has empowered 200 refugees to develop their English and Indonesian skills, communication skills, and legal knowledge. Each of us can become friends with refugees by volunteering our time and skills to improve their lives and by listening and understanding their plights in a journey in life.
I'm always reminded of my favorite quote from Mahatma Gandhi, "Be the change you want to see in the world," which has become one of my principles in life. I represented Indonesia in the YSEALI Women's Leadership Academy in 2022, where I was inspired to amplify the voices and raise awareness of the beauty of cultural diversity. Personally, I believe that every one of us wants to feel accepted and to be understood. The first step to foster a culture of peace is by being open-minded to people coming from different backgrounds, and to be brave to discuss our differences respectfully, and see those differences as our strength, not as a threat."
Clarissa Tanurahardja, Indonesia 🇮🇩 2022 YSEALI Women's Leadership Academy Alumna — We want to thank the YSEALI community, like Clarissa, who help create hope away from home for the most vulnerable. Thank you for all the wonderful, life-saving work that you do! #WithRefugees

Beauty of the Spanish Language"
Introduction of the Spanish Language
Spanish Language is a linguistic treasure that has a unique place in the hearts of millions of people all over the world because of its melodic tones and lively expressions. Spanish unites individuals from various continents, cultures, and eras of history, from the crowded streets of Madrid to the alluring landscapes of Latin America. This blog will explore the beauty and depth of the Spanish language, looking at its cultural significance, linguistic diversity, global reach, and the numerous educational opportunities it provides.
Spanish's Cultural Importance
The cultures it touches are significantly shaped by Spanish, one of the most frequently spoken languages in the world. It functions as a gateway to the thriving customs, literature, art, and music of Spanish-speaking nations. The Spanish language has produced recognized literary masterpieces that enthral readers everywhere, from the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's books to the poetic poetry of Pablo Neruda. Spanish also makes it possible to comprehend the diverse Hispanic cultures, such as the flamenco of Spain, the tango of Argentina, and the exuberant celebrations of Mexico's Day of the Dead.
Language Variation in Spanish
Despite the fact that Spanish unifies the Hispanic world, it is crucial to recognize the linguistic diversity that exists within the Spanish-speaking population. Language has its own distinctive flavors thanks to regional differences, dialects, and accents. For instance, both the vocabulary and pronunciation of Spanish spoken in Spain and Latin America are different. Each nation in Latin America has its own unique accents and idioms. Exploring these intricacies deepens our appreciation for the various cultures that make up the Spanish-speaking globe as well as our grasp of the language.
The Importance of Spanish Worldwide
With more than 460 million native speakers, Spanish ranks second among all languages. Beyond Spain and Latin America, it is extensively spoken throughout many regions of the United States and is an official language in Equatorial Guinea, making it an essential component of American culture. Additionally, Spanish is becoming a more vital language in international trade, diplomacy, and tourism. Knowledge of Spanish improves intercultural communication skills, expands career options, and promotes international awareness.

Intercultural Humility
Intercultural Humility is the subject of a new Professional Development training created by COPA National for the TÉÉ Program (travailleurs et travailleuses d’etablissement, or settlement workers. COPA National is the provincial coordinator for Settlement Workers in Ontario Schools, and as such we work with 10 teams serving newly arrived immigrant students and their families in regions throughout Ontario. To know more about this beloved program that is a cornerstone of our work, read our blog: COPA Presents the TÉÉ program. Intercultural Humility is intended to deepen the TÉÉ’s understanding of the vulnerability of newly arrived families and expand their capacity to support them. Many of the members of TÉÉ teams have themselves experienced what it is like to be a newly arrived immigrant in Canada, but this training is an opportunity to reflect deeply and learn new tools and strategies for their work with newly arrived families and students.
This is a beautiful and well-thought-out training that combines content, practice, and follow-up in a 3-part program, consisting of:
(Day 1) Savoir-être (knowing HOW to be) Intercultural Humility
(Day 2) Savoir-faire (acquiring skills) Developing Intercultural competence.
Follow-ups with each team (always an essential part of our practice)
Intercultural Humility is built upon the framework of COPA National’s Cycle of Positive Change: Learn, Reflect, Grow and Change. Through awareness, self-reflection, dialogue with others, and the acquisition of concrete information and tools, participants in this training learn to de-center themselves and be able to better perceive the reality of others. They will:
develop self-awareness by identifying their assumptions and biases, discovering their identity and values, and defining their cultural orientation and communication style,
develop an understanding of and respect for the logic and reasoning of different cultural orientations and communication styles, and
develop the reflex and ability to deal with cross-cultural interaction through observation, analysis, and engagement leading to the valuing and validation of diverse perspectives.
COPA National’s vision and approach is one of learning through empowerment, and we offer “tools not rules” that encourage the adoption of an intercultural approach through the cultivation of intercultural competence. We hope to eventually be able to offer this training across Canada to other settlement workers, educators, and adults who support children and youth. For more information about this Professional Development and other COPA National programs, please contact Lynn Hadley.

...And...
- Victoria
...there you have it! The ins and outs of humour in its many forms across the globe.
We hope this blog has taught you everything you need to know about humour, and you're ready to use these newly learnt skills in the big multi-cultural world of ours. We've covered a few aspects of humour, from memes to emojis and the good and not-so-good sides of trying to be funny, in the hope to help you integrate seamlessly into Uni life. As we have found out, making new friends relies on humour and Bell (2006) even explains how it plays a major role in deciding in-group vs out-group status… so no pressure, I guess!
However, if it does go wrong, don’t stress! It's perfectly normal to misunderstand each other, I mean humour could arguably be one of the most challenging forms of intercultural communication. Bell (2006) explained how humour for those experiencing it in their second language is more difficult to grasp than most other linguistic behaviours. So, if it takes a minute to get used to it, that’s ok, you're not alone!
Why not have a look at this blog which touches on areas we have discussed to explain why humour is the hardest to translate 😊
So...
3 key points to remember that can help you on your journey of understanding and creating humour are:
Culture
Language
Context
Depending on where you are, understanding the culture, the language and the context can help you craft and tailor your jokes, memes, or sarcasm to suit the place and people you are with! Or aim for jokes that avoid direct reference to all three of these to create more universally understood humour, as 'the idea of “funny” is rarely translatable and is highly personal, context and culture specific' (Reimann, 2010).
Whether you're laughing to make your lecturer feel better about the somewhat 'dad joke' they unleashed on class or sending hundreds of laughing emojis in response to the new memes your friend just sent you, humour brings us all together somehow. Keep in mind, that having a common ground, or some form of relationship will help with any humour related hiccups and judging the level of intimacy will prevent you making a taboo topic the subject of your joke at your first dinner with the new in-laws!
On that scary thought, it’s time to wrap up this humour fuelled adventure! We hope you have learnt a thing or two and if you have any questions leave them below 😊 Or for those looking for more advice for settling into Uni, check out this blog on British Culture for Beginners!
