this distinction leads to some interesting intercultural miscommunication - an outsider unfamiliar with orcish culture hearing about the existence of a forgewife, huntwife, herdwife, etc., assumes the title is being used in the way they're familiar with and that the chieftain has several wives by marriage; an orc unfamiliar with outside cultures learns the word "housewife" and assumes the title is being used in the way they're familiar with.

Another interesting thing to play into is how they view skills and hobbies is the goddess / demon culture shock they must experience in the human world. Elizabeth and Meliodas might have totally outside-the-box-ways of solving complex issues that humans can't imagine because well, in their realms, different things are possible. People they've encountered may consider them airheaded for things that any demon or goddess may conclude.

This phemonemon would happen to fairies and giants too, but demons and goddesses have always had a much more complicated view of humans due to their respective cultures. And vice versa. Fairies were straight up gone (?) from the Britannia dimension for centuries, while the giants mainly maintained a buisness relationship with humans. Of the races, therefore, I would say humans would have the best general understanding of giant culture. They know the least about fairies, and their understanding of goddess and demon culture equally sucks due to propoganda and the war.

Elizabeth doesn't know how human city planning works and can name maybe sixteen human colors. Five of these, she's told, do not exist. Because human adults rarely have the type of respect toward creatures he's used to seeing in the demon realm (they keep trying to tell him that no plants aren't sentient, not even certain types of plant, what do you mean just ask them not to damage the road with their root system?) he takes advice on wildlife mainly from children, witches, and Horse Girls TM. King won't correct him because that would mean unraveling 3,000 years of tales and explaining that there is no pixie that ritualistically collects human teeth. If you ask Meliodas why he thinks someone would possibly want to collect teeth he will tell you incredibly specific stories about the demons in his army who do so, including a sweet-tempered general who wears necklaces of her ancestors’ fangs and considers it her most wholesome family tradition. Her particular necklace weighs almost ten pounds. King does not want to think any more about demon teeth than he already has.

The racial aspects of Sci Fi, Fantasy and other forms media

One of the blog posts I have written before was titled ‘Mean World Syndrome’, which talked about how race and media affects everyone on a global scale. Racial aspects of sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media have long been a source of controversy. From the stereotypes of aliens in Star Trek to the whitewashing of characters in movies like Avatar, Prince of Persia, etc. these issues have been a major source of discussion in the media landscape. In many cases, racial stereotypes have been used to create a sense of ‘otherness’ for the characters of color in order to reinforce a sense of white superiority. This has led to criticism from fans, activists, and academics who have called for more representation of people of color in sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media.

In the entertainment business, inclusivity is hard to come by, and in some cases, the representation of characters of color in these genres is inadequate and often offensive. Characters of color are often relegated to the sidelines and made to serve as the backdrop to white characters’ stories, or they are depicted as tokens and stereotypes. This lack of meaningful representation has led to a push for more diverse casts in sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media. ‘‘Like many social sciences, international/intercultural/interethnic communication and media studies are primarily an Anglo-American media images have always been critically dissected, often by scholars with some kind of privileged tie to other cultures—Most makers of these blockbusters are mostly white males with English as their mother tongue, mutli-millionaires or aspiring to become one as soon as possible. Films or TV shows with fantasy/sci-fi themes on Netflix, like Chambers or Raising Dion are not being properly advertised because, like Inclusive Advertising: What’s Holding the Industry Back? claims, ‘‘The industry itself is not diverse: The advertising industry — across the ecosystem and at all levels — is not representative, which is itself a barrier to creating representative and inclusive content. Only 19% of in-house and 23% of agency survey respondents reported that their leader almost always considers the demographic diversity of their team when developing content. That, and individuals (in these marketing companies) lack awareness of and access to the knowledge, skills, resources, and tools to create representative and inclusive content. Individuals are confident in their ability to create representative and inclusive content, but only if provided with adequate tools and resources.’’

Of course, there will always be people who dislike seeing a more diverse setting, especially against the established order of Western ‘‘whiteness’’ ideologies. Ultimately, the best way to ensure diversity in these genres is to continue to create stories that feature diverse characters and cultures. If authors, producers, and casting directors make a conscious effort to create more imaginative stories that are inclusive and reflective of the real world, then audiences will be able to experience a more authentic and meaningful experience.

I managed this semester to be teaching two classes that are basically media literacy but from slightly different perspectives (one as a general ‘New Media’ and another through video games) and honestly it’s like the most fulfilling teaching work I’ve ever done. It’s teaching these students who are like 18-21 years old how to engage and think critically about the media environment around them and become better community members in the process. I just think it’s so massively important to learn these skills and I think I’m legitimately good at teaching media criticism and literacy. In 2050, the world could witness a major evolution, with the rise of linguistic diversity. While English is currently considered the dominant international language, the global linguistic landscape is changing significantly, with a growing recognition of the importance of regional and local languages. This transformation could have a profound impact on how people communicate, interact and perceive the world around them.

One of the main reasons for this rise in linguistic diversity is the rise of translation and communication technologies. Rapid advances in artificial intelligence have led to the development of more accurate and accessible instant translation systems. These tools allow individuals to easily communicate in their mother tongue, while being understood by interlocutors speaking other languages. YSEALI Alumni Highlight on World Refugee Day: Clarissa Tanurahardja

"Growing up in a multicultural family was a blessing in disguise for me. My big family is a melting pot of various cultures with intercultural marriages and diverse religions. However, as I grew up in Indonesia, it was not easy to look and feel different from my peers. As an Indonesian Chinese, I researched and learned that most people like me were killed in the 1998 riot in Indonesia, or most of them became refugees and sought protection in the resettlement country.

I'm passionate about the human rights of refugees, as they deserve equal fulfillment of their rights to education and well-being, as all of us do. I joined Sandya Institute in 2017 as Program Director, where together with youth volunteers, we advocate for peacebuilding and the rights of minority groups in Indonesia. Together with my best friend at Sandya Institute, we co-founded Sunrise Refugee Learning Center, which has empowered 200 refugees to develop their English and Indonesian skills, communication skills, and legal knowledge. Each of us can become friends with refugees by volunteering our time and skills to improve their lives and by listening and understanding their plights in a journey in life.

I'm always reminded of my favorite quote from Mahatma Gandhi, "Be the change you want to see in the world," which has become one of my principles in life. I represented Indonesia in the YSEALI Women's Leadership Academy in 2022, where I was inspired to amplify the voices and raise awareness of the beauty of cultural diversity. Personally, I believe that every one of us wants to feel accepted and to be understood. The first step to foster a culture of peace is by being open-minded to people coming from different backgrounds, and to be brave to discuss our differences respectfully, and see those differences as our strength, not as a threat."

The Importance of Spanish Worldwide

With more than 460 million native speakers, Spanish ranks second among all languages. Beyond Spain and Latin America, it is extensively spoken throughout many regions of the United States and is an official language in Equatorial Guinea, making it an essential component of American culture. Intercultural Humility

Intercultural Humility is the subject of a new Professional Development training created by COPA National for the TÉÉ Program (travailleurs et travailleuses d’etablissement, or settlement workers. COPA National is the provincial coordinator for Settlement Workers in Ontario Schools, and as such we work with 10 teams serving newly arrived immigrant students and their families in regions throughout Ontario. Intercultural Humility is intended to deepen the TÉÉ’s understanding of the vulnerability of newly arrived families and expand their capacity to support them. Many of the members of TÉÉ teams have themselves experienced what it is like to be a newly arrived immigrant in Canada, but this training is an opportunity to reflect deeply and learn new tools and strategies for their work with newly arrived families and students.

This is a beautiful and well-thought-out training that combines content, practice, and follow-up in a 3-part program, consisting of:

(Day 1) Savoir-être (knowing HOW to be) Intercultural Humility

(Day 2) Savoir-faire (acquiring skills) Developing Intercultural competence.

Follow-ups with each team (always an essential part of our practice)

Intercultural Humility is built upon the framework of COPA National’s Cycle of Positive Change: Learn, Reflect, Grow and Change. Through awareness, self-reflection, dialogue with others, and the acquisition of concrete information and tools, participants in this training learn to de-center themselves and be able to better perceive the reality of others. They will:

develop self-awareness by identifying their assumptions and biases, discovering their identity and values, and defining their cultural orientation and communication style,

develop an understanding of and respect for the logic and reasoning of different cultural orientations and communication styles, and

develop the reflex and ability to deal with cross-cultural interaction through observation, analysis, and engagement leading to the valuing and validation of diverse perspectives.

COPA National’s vision and approach is one of learning through empowerment, and we offer “tools not rules” that encourage the adoption of an intercultural approach through the cultivation of intercultural competence. We hope to eventually be able to offer this training across Canada to other settlement workers, educators, and adults who support children and youth. We hope this blog has taught you everything you need to know about humour, and you're ready to use these newly learnt skills in the big multi-cultural world of ours. We've covered a few aspects of humour, from memes to emojis and the good and not-so-good sides of trying to be funny, in the hope to help you integrate seamlessly into Uni life. As we have found out, making new friends relies on humour and Bell (2006) even explains how it plays a major role in deciding in-group vs out-group status… so no pressure, I guess!   

However, if it does go wrong, don’t stress! It's perfectly normal to misunderstand each other, I mean humour could arguably be one of the most challenging forms of intercultural communication. Bell (2006) explained how humour for those experiencing it in their second language is more difficult to grasp than most other linguistic behaviours. So, if it takes a minute to get used to it, that’s ok, you're not alone!

Depending on where you are, understanding the culture, the language and the context can help you craft and tailor your jokes, memes, or sarcasm to suit the place and people you are with! Or aim for jokes that avoid direct reference to all three of these to create more universally understood humour, as 'the idea of “funny” is rarely translatable and is highly personal, context and culture specific' (Reimann, 2010).  

Whether you're laughing to make your lecturer feel better about the somewhat 'dad joke' they unleashed on class or sending hundreds of laughing emojis in response to the new memes your friend just sent you, humour brings us all together somehow. Keep in mind, that having a common ground, or some form of relationship will help with any humour related hiccups and judging the level of intimacy will prevent you making a taboo topic the subject of your joke at your first dinner with the new in-laws!
