something that peeves me in fiction – in a setting where society that hasn't mostly eliminated scarcity, anyway – is when someone really kindhearted takes in a near stranger in need (e.g. orphan, ex slave) and that person is their only project to whom they can give a lot of care. irl I feel like everyone who's exceptionally nice, or at least bad at drawing a line for their own health, has a full case load and is close to burnout

I don't mind this at all when there's a good plot reason for why X should be helping Y in particular and isn't already overbooked; I feel some ugh when X is depicted as someone who'd always help people in Y's shoes but has mysteriously evaded all other supplicants.

I'm pro-fantasy but this kind of moral fantasy strikes me as a bit uglier than the others: you can be a nurturing figure who gives unconditional help without running something so unphotogenic as a vetting interview or cost/benefit analysis, but you'll never be overwhelmed, either

I've been trying to pay more attention to when things feel easy. I spent so many years forcing things - relationships, interests, routines - that it was difficult to imagine things could or should feel differently. now that I've starting experiencing things that feel natural, I'm learning that hard work and forcing things are not equivalent. Doing well in a class I enjoy takes a lot of work, but it's not miserable. Swimming makes me tired but it brings me joy. When I tell someone I like spending time with them, they suggest fun things to do and it just happens to be an activity I love. Relationships and hobbies and passions take work, but they can feel good. Noticing when it feels good can help us find the way towards what's meant for us.

Overall, Maya would be incredibly quiet around him. Not knowing how to start up a conversation with him, or how to even approach him in the first place! She’s easily intimidated by the jocks and bullies, but If she sees him around the library, her opinion of him would slowly start to change.

She’d start to pay more attention to him to try and see If he’s different from the rest of the Jocks. She has always thought that they were all built from the same prototype, but If she becomes friends with Max, she’d then see that not all of em are the same!

Maya would hear the rumors about him too from eavesdropping on other students conversations, hearing some calling him nice things and not so nice things would make her intrigued as to what his true nature is like!

“He’s…actually not that bad! I talked to him for a little while in the library and It went pretty well! There were some long pauses here and there, but who needs small talk anyway?”

Breaking news, Maya finds out that PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT?!?1!? but yes, talking to Max would make her feel a bit less intimidated by the Jocks, not completely erasing those feelings tho. I’d imagine that their first encounter would be pretty awkward, like ‘seeing someone you know in a supermarket, but trying to avoid them so you won’t talk to them” kinda thing, but they’d keep running into each other. 😭

Eventually as they get to know more about each other—Maya would immediately start to feel guilt over her feelings about her from earlier. She judged him solely off his looks and her own preconceived notions about Jocks. One thing about Maya is that when she feels bad, she has to immediately spill it, so she’d apologize to him about that, but would take it very seriously—as if she did something horrible to him that would’ve scarred him. 💔

Also If they regularly started hanging out Maya would DEF start to admire him and sadly also envy him over his grades. hg is always self loathing I think that these two’s relationship would start off really slow since they both are quiet in nature, but it’d be really sweet too since the progression would go from ‘long uncomfortable silence’ to Maya rambling about her favorite experiments in the chemistry field or Max’s painting expertise and his favorite pieces! :D

But, She’d absolutely be terrified of him on March 12th If he starts acting differently with her and instead she’d try to give him some space instead of ramblings.

I’d honestly like to think that she’d put a box of chocolates in his locker on that day to try and help him get through the day.

(M + R) I can see Ruth taking Maxime to the most expensive restaurant available in Bullworth and Maxime was like 'uhm... Okay', it's not that he dislikes it or something, it's just that he's never been to an expensive restaurant before and is thinking about how he doesn't have money since he's not from a rich family but later he realized that he has the money from the people who paid him to draw them. So, he takes it and Ruth was like 'No, you don't need it because it's on me' but still, Maxime takes it with him

(M + R) SLOW DANCE!!! They would have a slow dance for sure and the two are always perfect everytime they're slow dancing

(M + R) he would wipe something off Ruth's mouth if there's something on it (like a piece of food) with his finger or a napkin (or a tissue)

(M + R) Ruth yapping about the wrongs in school and how people are a bunch of animals and immature while Maxime listening to her and sometimes giving his opinion on it while at the same time eating at their date

This makes me think of Snapewives or the person who claimed to be "channeling " Frodo back in the Peter Jackson LOTR fandom where these same sad isolated kinds of people became victims of grifters, but at least their friends and family realized they were doing something "weird" instead of just "messing with the computer." And scares me thinking that AI chat bots have told people to kill themselves before....
