something that peeves me in fiction – in a setting where society that hasn't mostly eliminated scarcity, anyway – is when someone really kindhearted takes in a near stranger in need (e.g. orphan, ex slave) and that person is their only project to whom they can give a lot of care. irl I feel like everyone who's exceptionally nice, or at least bad at drawing a line for their own health, has a full case load and is close to burnout

I don't mind this at all when there's a good plot reason for why X should be helping Y in particular and isn't already overbooked; I feel some ugh when X is depicted as someone who'd always help people in Y's shoes but has mysteriously evaded all other supplicants.

I'm pro-fantasy but this kind of moral fantasy strikes me as a bit uglier than the others: you can be a nurturing figure who gives unconditional help without running something so unphotogenic as a vetting interview or cost/benefit analysis, but you'll never be overwhelmed, either

I've been trying to pay more attention to when things feel easy. I spent so many years forcing things - relationships, interests, routines - that it was difficult to imagine things could or should feel differently. now that I've starting experiencing things that feel natural, I'm learning that hard work and forcing things are not equivalent. Doing well in a class I enjoy takes a lot of work, but it's not miserable. Swimming makes me tired but it brings me joy. When I tell someone I like spending time with them, they suggest fun things to do and it just happens to be an activity I love. Relationships and hobbies and passions take work, but they can feel good. Noticing when it feels good can help us find the way towards what's meant for us.

i stopped reading but one more complaint and then i go have fun.

the guy was asserting that multiple encounters with violence make you better at handling it, but that the exception was a type of "victim personality" who goes from abusive relationship to abusive relationship or is just victimized multiple times (no clue how THAT'S an aspect of personality, but okay).

the thing is i think the process of acclimation he's talking about is similar in someone who goes from abuser to abuser as it is in someone who goes from violent encounter to violent encounter. i don't disagree that, like, when you're going into this stuff with a sense of purpose and agency that makes a big difference in the way you move through it, but it's like, in both cases you essentially accept sometimes very extreme violence as a daily norm that you just have to put up with, and find ways to do damage control about the toll that INEVITABLY takes on your mind and body. the particulars of those two situations are very different ofc but it's still like, you gradually acclimate yourself (or are forced to acclimate yourself) to a normal most other people would not find acceptable. and SHOULD not.

i don't like the way he seems to think victims/survivors are these fragile, ridiculous people even if he gives lip service to their Courage or whatever. it's one of those things where i'm like, okay, if it's so easy then you take all that punishment with no viable options for fighting back meaningfully, and then get back to me. people genuinely don't appreciate how even if you don't or can't fight back you have to be massively tough to put up with so much shit. it's not Cool and Macho though so yknow whatever
