This small post is to celebrate I've now gone all the way through the Integrated Chinese textbook, level 1, part 2!
I just listened to the audio file of the last dialogue, and the cast also sounded pretty relieved to be done.

THINGS I AM UNREASONABLY ANNOYED ABOUT BY GAME SYSTEM
D&D: Please put a disclaimer that you are not a universal system. Every time I see someone try to do a political mystery game in D&D, I take 3d10 psychic damage and have to make a death saving throw.
Pathfinder: Look. If i wanted to play a game about fighting Cthulhu there is an extremely famous game specifically designed around doing that. Literally no-one is ever going to say "Wow, I want to play a Cthulhu themed game! Time to stat up a musical halfling from a magical fantasy land!".
Chronicles Of Darkness: Just admit no-one uses any of your rules. You have Social Door Rules and Integrity Conditions and Corruption Levels and I bet at most 50% of COD players could tell me which of those I made up. Just admit people aren't dressing up as Alucard The Bringer Of Shadows because they want to sit down and do calculus.
World Of Darkness: You know that old guy who's still doing his job even though he is way too old to do it any more, but he's now an institution so you can't get rid of him? Like that. The 90s called and they want literally everything about this back.
Call Of Cthulhu: I appreciate the commitment to authenticity, but maybe stop hiring actual disgraced mental asylum directors from the 1920s to design your sanity system?
GURPS: Look. Look. Listen. We both know that you just want to write history textbooks. These are history textbooks with a few stat blocks begrudgingly put in. If you just give me a book on early Chinese history I will read it and go "ah, very interesting!". You don't need to put in a list of character choices. We're all nerds. We'll read them. Live your best life.
Powered By The Apocalypse: I actually can't think of anything wrong with PBTA. That's not a bit, this is literally the perfect system. Take notes everyone else.
Mutants and Masterminds/Heroes System: Your systems have probably the most customizable character creation in the world and you both just make reskins of the Justice League over and over again. Maybe we only need one "thinly veiled copyrighted characters" setting? You can fight over it once you decipher your combat mechanics.
FATE: Ok I won't lie, I have no idea how the fuck FATE works. I have read the rules repeatedly and played three games and I still have no idea what invoking an aspect means. I don't know why. I grasped the rules of fucking Nobilis but this one just psychologically eludes me. This is more a problem with me I guess, but I'm still annoyed.
Warhammer 40k: Have you considered spending less on avocado toast? Then you might be able to afford to charge less for things?
Exalted: Apart from the lore, the setting, the mechanics, the metaplot, the character creation and the dodgy narrative implications, I can't think of anything to improve here.

me and a friend of mine have been criticising (read: insulting with no mercy) our chinese textbook, so i've got a question for you: what are your red flags in a language textbook?
i'll start with some of mine:
1. five tons of vocabulary per lesson
2. no revision at all: 5% of words from the previous lesson came up? consider yourself lucky
3. almost no audio

I was making tiny clay cats earlier and had a great idea for an ask, but then I got busy and forgot
I think it was something about fashion with the mass effect species
Electronically sending you a fictional tiny clay cat statue
Thank for the tiny clay cat, I'll put it on the virtual table that I keep in this blog at all times, which is a real table that happened to have a unique eco-friendly design, from an eccentric manufacturer, and definitely not just two logs I lugged from the woods.
🕔
🌱🐈 🪟🏙
🪵🪵 🧺 🩲 🪤 🐁
I hope my virtual son 🧒 (common) ×1 doesn't knock it off with his virtual ball ⚽️ (common) ×1 because I won't financially recover from the purchase of the virtual gold 🪙 (rare) ×99 I'd need to glue the pieces of the broken clay cat back together in order to teach him about Kintsugi, the value of history and taking pride in the scars it leaves on ones body.
But yes, Mass Effect alien species fashion.
I mentioned before that the asari would definitely be into human fashion since we share a similar physical build.
They tend to mix up the centuries, however, wearing Edwardian era garments one day, and then full-on ancient Rome with draped tunics the next one.
To us, that seems silly because it's our history. These fashion designs are centuries old, and our first ever impressions on them were in textbooks or some other non-fashionable place. You wouldn't have a woollen toga at a strip mall where tweens naturally went with their overbearing parents to develop a sense of style.
But to the asari, all of these clothes are brand new! Just in! The latest fashion trends! From the perspective of their timeline, their society started integrating skinny jeans at the same time as robe à la française.
And the fact they live for 1000 years, the entirety of human recorded history is just two asari generations—would help them see our ancient fashion as more of "last Wednesday's"
Although many human cultures do keep their tradition clothes alive, like the hanfu being used in Chinese festives, or the Arab thawb still worn as in commonplace same as it was in 600 AD.... because what other garment is more suitable for desert climates?
Okay back to aliens, my fashion hyperfixation is showing
The asari are easy peasy, it's like two sister civilisations deciding to share their wardrobes and doubling the amount of clothes they retroactively have access to now.
You see many humans on the Citadel adapt to asari fashion, and as the game progresses, you notice asari fashion start getting influenced by predominantly human-fashion traits. Take Ryder's clothes in Andromeda for example.
The Alliance uniforms must seem ancient to the new humans with their cross-species influenced fashion trends, and I do mean ancient.
They probably view them (alongside our current modern hot-trendy fashion), like how me and you view the Victorian era fashion through a thick lens of rose-tinted glass. I wear corsets over flowy blouses, corsets, the thing that used to be considered underwear.
It's just very socially accessible now. Would someone someday wear a 2000's cheetah print thong over their military uniform in the alliance and call it fashion? Who's to say.
You see those modern two-piece suits with neon vibrant colours? The ones with precise cuts, invisible stiches, and all the pieces—down to the jacket buttons—are made from the same exact material and colour?
Someone is gonna dig that up in the year of Mass Effect and call it vintage and it's gonna piss me the fuck off, the trajectory of the earth will be altered from the massive rolls I'll be doing in my grave.
For the rest of the species, I don't see them adapting our garments due to anatomy incompatibility.
But fashion is the keyword here, because it is so much more than just clothes.
None of the asari have eyebrows, they don't have the genes for hair, therefore no eyebrows or anything.
Except, Liara, who has drawn-on (or perm tat) eyebrows.
Which is a VERY human feature, eyebrows might as well be the trademark of humanity. What do you do to an animal in animation to humanise it and make it seem intelligent?
You add eyebrows.
Liara, this rando asari scientist, for some reason, is elbow-deep into human makeup. Literally, no other asari has eyebrows or showed care for human makeup besides her.
We humans can't see our own "invisible" stripes, our faces are usually a blank canvas, which is why makeup is so fun, pretty, and whimsical. It's the same reason you'd add flowers to your hair or draw at the empty corner of the page.
Asari have their own seemingly natural face markings (unless those are drawn too) and putting makeup on top of them might seem distasteful or even tacky. Like drawing over someone's complete drawing.
But you know which species LOVES adding lines to their face? None other than space birbs themselves, the humble turians.
Humans like sunsets, birds like shiny things, and turians love glitter.
Of course, there are zero evidence of that ingame because they wanted the turians to have a metal, baddass, slightly scary aesthetic, and that's fair.
But if we're being realistic, it's just a matter of time before a turian decides to incorporate glitter into their clan face paint. It's a natural instinct for them to be the bird with the shinest, puffest, most colourful coat of feathers in the room.
Turians would love human makeup, wasn't it for the fact it's deadly toxic to them. Thanks, dextro. I mean, not like that ever stopped humans before. Remember when lipstick used to contain lead and mercury? Good time, good times.
But actually, now thinking about it, would those things be poisonous to them? Lead and mercury? I mean, they're already radioactive with a shit ton of copper in their bloodstream. Their body literally grows metal on their faces... and turian seminal fluid is poisonous to humans, meaning...
They might be able to use mineral based makeup! Which is so fucking deadly to humans, but probably fine for turians.
Although the human skin is spongey, the creamy make-up sticks to the top of it like icing on a cake. But it might not latch onto rough metal, aka turian plates.
It's also made with so many oils in mind because humans are actually very slimy, we just never notice it because our pores are so small and the thin layer of oil is hardly noticeable.
It's why bugs find us disgusting and wash our oill off of them after touching us, too bad they still need our delicious nutritious dead skincells and sweat to slurp up, so they endure it for the sake of food.
But we do, in fact, require being moist 24/7. It's where the "soft" skin feeling comes from, silly, being drenched in oil throughout your whole existence does that sometimes.
And turian metals do not, actually the oils might just bleach their shells if left to oxidise.
No, turian makeup wouldn't work if it was creamy or liquidiy like ours—even with the added lead.
My proposal: Chalk Makeup.
It's dry, it's crumbly, it's easy to remove. You ever drawn with chalk on street concrete? Would probably be the same as applying makeup to a turian.
And it has calcium! Yummy yum! Which the turians probably need a shit ton of, considering that most creatures with some kind of shell do insatiably crave it (see: sanils)
My last nugget of wisdom is that what's considered fashion to the geth/ai/synthetics in general isn't that far off from high-end, very personalised custom gaming pcs. Be it the pastel and white hardshells or the neons and glowing cooling liquids.
Hipster geth prefer the fruitger ero early 2010's aesthetic, enjoy that mental image for a while.

NEED HELP!
Three minutes ago I realized my goal in life...
To know who officially has the best eyebrows...
BUT I NEED YOU! to help me make a list of competitors! send me asks, respond to this post, or reblog with anyone you can think of who has crazy cool eyebrows! Also, this is a compliment, we aren't making fun of anyone's eyebrows because eyebrows are incredibly powerful
SOME RULES:
-no making fun of anyone's eyebrows, this is a positive poll
-person/character you submit can be from any media, cartoon or live action, etc
-You can think they have the coolest eyebrows for any reason at all, whether they have bushy eyebrows, long eyebrows, no eyebrows, thin eyebrows, short eyebrows, drawn on eyebrows, unibrow etc
Currently, I can think of several eyebrow havers to start with:
Peter Capaldi (of course)
Bowser
Wang Peng from the Integrated Chinese Textbook
Spock
Popular Science Fiction Writer, Adrian Tchaikovsky (yes, he's the spider guy)
Worf
Frida Kahlo (shes iconic, I could never not include her)
Black cats with visible bald spots between their eyes and ears:
Tumblr media
like this guy^ and my own cat
PLEASE ADD TO MY LIST
also i've never done a poll like this so hopefully I'm doing it right!
EDIT: I really appreciate the additions so far and Im definitely adding them to my list but its not enough for a proper poll yet, please reblog! This post wont get anywhere without reblogging! Thank you so much!

day 3/100 of productivity
Today I wore Givenchy’s L’Interdit Rouge, truly a magnificent scent for a gloomy Sunday…
Tasks accomplished today:
Astrophysics exercises
Revise lab report and read lab book
Italian translation
Waves material revision + ODEs
French podcast
Chinese study
{Notes of the day: I’ve been in one of the worst reading slumps as of late, I have an entire list of ancient history and philosophy of physics books to finish before exam season and yet I have barely touched them… I also saw some really helpful Latin grammar/vocabulary textbooks which I’ll have to postpone for next semester since I hope to finish my first integrated Chinese textbook before the ending of the one we are confronting as I write this…}

i could perhaps provide a little advice for the previous anon since i’m also learning chinese through english! be warned that i am taking it as a course in college and i do live in china so there are certain things i picked up without actually studying for it!
some resources: for textbooks, the one i use is “integrated chinese”, i believe it has multiple books in the series, it starts very simple and has the dialogues recorded as videos so you can always practice through them.
also here are some instagram accounts that post free educational videos and daily phrases, some of them also share resources sometimes: @avenxiangmandarin, @nerudalingchinese, @gegethejing, @marcelowang0527, @sandychengchinese, @mandarinmelon
for me the most useful part wasn’t studying it in class, but exposure to the language, and i think it also helps to record yourself practicing the tones and going back to see where you’re going wrong is helpful!
i hope any of this is useful!! 加油!
posting this for anon - thank you art!!!! this is super extensive and tbh helpful for ME loll I should grab some of those textbooks
the point about recording yourself and practicing the tones is super important actually. I'd like to add that just from seeing my friends trying to learn the language, I think tones are actually what english speakers struggle with the most (since the characters are just memorization and the grammar is uncomplicated at a conversational level).
in the absence of an irl mandarin speaker to help with tones, I unironically would recommend genshin/hsr on chinese audio to help get an ear for the tones LOOOOL - @/kitsunabi made a really good point about the repetition of the voice lines being valuable to learners. try to look up the voice lines in mandarin with pinyin, and listen to how the characters say it!

[CN] MLQC Lucien's Through Thousands of Mirrors event translation (Day 5 - Monday)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through Thousands of Mirrors Event | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 (You're here!) | Day 6 | Day 7 | HS/Uni SSR Story: Monochrome Scenery
Tumblr media
-
special thanks to ivi (@ivioivioivi on twitter) for helping me with that last part 🫶
-
[PREVIEW]
A perfect week starts with morning prepping.
Lucien opens the textbook and reads through all the content that will be covered today.
He closes the textbook, then mentally connects and integrates the knowledge.
Ok, it's time to go to class!
-
[NEUROSCIENCE]
Tumblr media
In Dr. Lawson's neuroscience class, there are occasional pop quizzes.
The first question can be answered with common sense, the second question is doable if you've reviewed the textbook, and the third question covers the material from the previous class, so it's quite easy.
The final question: "Discuss in 20 words the correlation between the prefrontal cortex, human behavior, and choice patterns in stressful environments."
Uh?
Tumblr media
"P.S. Just kidding. Draw a cat in the upper left corner of your answer sheet for bonus points."
.......
Tumblr media
"P.P.S. It would be even better if it's a tabby cat. An extra point for those who draw a tabby cat."
.....Okay.
-
[COGNITIVE SCIENCE]
Tumblr media
Lucien looks at the cognitive science lesson plan and has a sudden inspiration.
It would be interesting to research a method that makes the brain receive or process information in a fixed manner.
He thinks Dr. Lawson would refuse the project proposal due to ethical concerns.
And if BS were to propose this direction, his research freedom would be restricted.
You can't have your cake and eat it too*.
[T/N: "鱼和熊掌不可兼得" (yú hé xióng zhǎng bù kě jiān dé) (lit translated to: You can't have both fish and bear's paw) is a Chinese idioms that means you can't have both at the same time. It's similar to the English saying, "You can't have your cake and eat it too."]
-
[BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE]
When you have many classmates aspiring to become physicians around you, there is always a loving and friendly atmosphere in the biomedical classroom.
But when your classmates start discussing how to prevent hair loss, this atmosphere dissipates.
Lucien touches his own hair, there shouldn't be a problem.
-
[FREE TIME]
Besides observing the passing students, Lucien also enjoys observing the small animals on campus.
Chickadees, crows, squirrels...
Um?
Lucien looks at his empty hands and understands why the squirrels on campus are particularly big and strong.
-
[LAB]
Lucien really likes his "workstation" in the laboratory.
The desk isn't large, but it's by the window, providing him with an environment where he won't be easily disturbed, and it just a bit sunny in the afternoon.
It's quite suitable for keeping some plants.
-
[LAB]
Tumblr media
The beauty of science lies in its rigor, in the certainty reached through numerous hypotheses and repeated proofs.
And perhaps it also lies in the uncertainty of all possibilities during the process and the journey of venturing into the vast unknown.
-
[LAB]
Tumblr media
Dr. Lawson treats people cordially and enjoys having open discussions with all kind of questions with students.
When facing Colt's statement that seems to come out of nowhere, "Capable people can be arrogant," Dr. Lawson also shares his own opinion.
"I think that arrogance should be directly proportional to one's achievements."
Lucien nods and says, “I also think we should always examine ourselves.”
Dr. Lawson raises his head with little cunning smile : “No, what I mean is for you to get a bit more achievements.”
Tumblr media
Lucien was choked.

18.11.2024 // autumn quarter
made lots of progress today! for korean, i focused on the 은요/는요 construction for changing the subject or asking for something else besides the original topic. i was delighted with this one, honestly—both turkish and chinese have similar constructions, as you can see from my notes.
german was more review, though much-needed—i've always had a tenuous grasp on grammatical gender, because none of my mother tongues have it (and turkish and chinese don't really have gendered pronouns at all, unless you count the written form of chinese), so taking notes on ways to remember and guess grammatical genders is really helpful.
i really am enjoying the textbooks i'm using for korean and german—the routledge grammar/workbook and the KLEAR integrated korean textbook both really emphasise practice and exercises, which helps me remember things better than just taking notes and moving on.
i've finally cracked open the bangla textbook i got when i was going to take classes (i wound up dropping it because twenty credit hours plus work-study was too much to juggle), and while i'm on the literal first page, taking notes in bangla is helping me remember the letters, in combination with the ankiapp deck i'm using. even if i'm not making rapid progress, i'm making some!
to finish off the day, i completed my presentation for the final project for my chinese literature class—i decided to focus on divination in ancient, imperial, and late imperial china. i may have gone a little wild—our professor only requires us to use one primary source if we're grad students, and two secondary sources if we're undergrads, but i have two primary sources and three secondary sources. the research process was fascinating—i was reading about song and qing divination, which was really neat.

week 1 of studying chinese everyday in january
so ive (kinda) started over with mandarin to learn traditional characters rather than simplified, which is what i learned in the CHN101 course at my community college
this is because i’ll hopefully be studying in taiwan over the summer and that is where most of my interest is plus traditional should somewhat help with japanese as well as if i wanna learn cantonese in the future
i didnt record what i did daily so heres a summary so far
- have gotten an okay handle on zhuyin, just need practice and to learn where each character is on apples zhuyin keyboard since the site i used to learn used something else. i do like the concept more than pinyin but some of the final combinations confuse me (more on that another day)
- started reviewing my integrated chinese textbook as thats what both my old and current college use as their class resources. i bought the fluencylink (e-learning) account this time instead of the physical textbook and i looove it, its interactive, contains all the audio/video to go along and gives immediate grades on each section you complete. i did buy the physical workbook just to have in class though.
- have been taking some online classes through LTL and despite signing up/paying for group classes every class ive taken so far has just been 1 on 1 (i take them at like 3 am so i guess other people just dont sign up for those times) and have been enjoying it! online classes and tutors have made me anxious in the past and prior to this my online mandarin teachers almost never corrected my tones which i hated but these are great! i definitely feel like my pronunciation has improved but i still have to work a lot on sentence flow and tone sandhi/combinations.
- scouring the internet for taiwanese shows/movies/youtubers etc to get a feel for the accent differences and just for some listening practice (if you have recommendations lmk)
- also been going crazy looking for apps and sites that offer traditional characters as most are made for simplified/standard mandarin. i have a few that i like so far but hope to find more. i like to have a textbook to guide me through and give me structure but also various other resources to learn things that interest me or that i’ll actually talk about in daily conversation.
overall feeling pretty good and pretty excited to finally get back to studying languages and traveling.
oh and!!! i have mostly finalized what my chinese name is with the help of the teachers i’ve had so far, hence the username change as well and it is … 昕霓 ! (xīnní) i havent chosen a last name tho as im not sure if i need one atm but if anyone has ideas as to what would sound good im open to suggestions.
if anyone would want it im more than happy to post what resources ive been using, and/or what media ive been watching/liking that use traditional characters since its definitely been a little more challenging to find it all. lmk !!

Hey! Can you please recommend some physical books for self studying Mandarin? Thank you.
Hello,
I'm sorry it's been a while since I've been active on here. I used the Integrated Chinese textbooks and workbooks in college. I think they can be used even without a class.

Genuinely thinking of going back to school but I have so many options running through my mind. I could do integrative med online which is what I really want to study comprehensively but I actually want to be on a campus now. I could go to esthetician school to become a holistic esthetician but I’d still want to be trained in & study more holistic/alternative med subjects. Could get certified as a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner. I did think the option of just buying the textbooks they’d teach me out of anyway and running my own education, but Ik myself and I’m not organized/structured…The overall point of school is not the degree for me or the jobs (that honestly a bachelors won’t open you up to), because Ik that I’d just want to run my own wellness business in the end.

Is it weird how I'm suddenly inspired to learn a new language? Are there any resources you would recommend for learning Mandarin and Latin American Spanish?
I don't think that's weird at all, it's always cool to learn a new language and if you ever feel inspired to do it, I'd say do it!
As far as resources I recommend...
I tend to get basic 101 style books on the language's alphabet/writing system, basic grammar rules and phrases and from there I pretty much solo it by listening to music, watching movies, watching anime subbed in a target language, etc. etc. I do this with pretty much every language I've learned up until this pointー Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Mandarin. Then every once in a while I take occasional notes on things like grammar. The more adept I get with the language, the less I start relying on the book.
For Spanish the book I got was Spanish Demystified. For Mandarin I used the textbooks I needed to purchase for the class, Integrated Chinese (Simplified Characters), and watched Chinese dramas and movies. I really like the Mexican novelas Soy Tu Dueña, Mi Corazón es Tuyo, María la del Barrio. I've been into Reina del Flow on Netflix lately (Colombian). La Primera Dama, both Colombian and Chilean versions, are good. You can find plenty of novelas on Netflix and Youtube.
I'm more into Chinese films than C-dramas personally, I LOVE the movie Suddenly Seventeen (it's on youtube too), Big Fish & Begonia and Hear Me (Taiwanese Film) are my personal favorites. I'll recommend those any day of the week.
I also recommend watching youtubers that speak your target language. Especially if you're trying to learn a Latin American variety of Spanish since across Latin America there are plenty of dialects and accents. I'd check out as many as possible because if you're trying to learn a specific dialect, you'll want to know which one you like the most. I went with Mexican since my at the time GF was Mexican and I worked in her city for a while back in 2018.
Youtubers I like are Missasinfonia (Mexican), Piyoasdf (Chilean), Danna Alquati (Venezuelan). I'd say just learn how to say certain things you're interested in Spanish or Mandarin and look them up in youtube. Like... 'viendo JJK por primera vez' to find JJK reactions in Spanish and so on and so forth.
I rec watching youtubers and movies and listening to music since native speakers naturally speak faster than the way they do in videos/resources meant for teaching. So it's best to get used to how native speakers speak quickly, at least for me. But I'd adapt your studying and things like that to personally how you best learn, what your goals are for the language and things like that.
I go more into it in this post on my study/langblr

Sense Making in Nature Interpretation
A number of us are going to take different approaches to this week’s blog prompt as all of us are driven and interested by different aspects of nature. Some of us are passionate about specific wildlife, others are more interested in natural landscapes and some of us are still trying to understand what part of nature intrigues them the most. For myself, I have always been interested in the impact that nature plays in human health. To be more specific, what components of nature play a role in a healthy mind, body and soul.
Nature is fascinating in itself as there are many aspects of it that play dynamic roles in relationships. The most interesting thing I know about nature is the impact that it has on human health and happiness. As mentioned in the textbook, we learn how to interpret nature through our life cycle in academic settings (Beck et al., 2018). Schools want to integrate our learning with nature through various programs and facilities as it provides individuals important life skills (Beck et al., 2018). Prior to taking ENVS*3000, I have taken a couple of ecology courses and learned about the relationship nature has on human happiness in an ASCI course I took. Human beings depend a lot on their environment for their actions and their emotions. The term used that refers to this relationship is nature connectedness. According to a study conducted in China, there is positive correlation between nature connectedness and mental health (Liu et al., 2022). We have discussed throughout the course how nature is present in music, history and our everyday lives and when we choose to understand all of these categories, we are then able to confidentially submerge ourselves in nature (Beck et al., 2018). Some find peaceful meditation to nature sounds their way of destressing while others find walks or hikes their go-to. I want to pose the question, where do you feel the calmest? What do you do to connect yourself with nature?
Personally, I have always found myself feeling my best in terms of confidence and energy when I am in the outdoors. Whether this be sitting in my backyard enjoying my morning coffee on a sunny day or taking a hike in the escarpments. I have personally noticed amazing benefits to my skin in nature as well, for example, when I am at a beach or in saltwater, my keratosis pilaris magically disappears and my acne settles as well. According to some studies, saltwater places a role in soothing and reducing atopic skin conditions (Martin et al., 2016). I have always found that nature has had nothing but positive impacts on me both mentally and physically. I also believe that it is extremely important to look at how other countries advocate for the environment. Countries like China and Scandinavian countries are very keen on ensuring they are doing their part in integrating nature and the environment into people’s everyday lives.
