Summary of my first term of my Ph.D. at Stanford during a global pandemic and an extremely controversial election year (Anthropology, yr. 1, she/they, 25y/o) with some toggl data analysis

Well this year was a doozy if I don’t say so myself. But we survived it, and its okay if that’s all you were able to do this year because that’s enough. As an offical 18th grader, I feel like I can speak pretty well to the toxicity of the academic environment. There is always a pressure to be working all of the time, people compete with each other with how few hours of sleep they got, every conversation with fellow students is just listing off all of the different assignemnts you have to do by the end of the week. On top of all of this, this is 2020. So, I decided that this year I’m going to give myself some mental slack.

I decided that this is the year that I’m not going to try to impress anyone. I’m just going to survive and do what I have to do to move onto the next term. I think I did a pretty good job at that for the first term, so I’ll share a bit about what I observed in myself and those in my cohort. Coming into term one having to choose classes, many of my peers were packing their schedules full of 5 Unit seminars. For those who don’t know, theoretically, a 5 Unit course is supposed to take about 5-6 hours of work outside of class hours. For Stanford Anthropology, most PhD students take as close as they can to 18 credits, and anything over that you have to pay extra for the courses. Taking more courses doesn’t really put you any further ahead in terms of completing your degree, and you’re expected to complete about 45 Units each year for the first two years of the program.

I decided to take 2 seminars (typical), a language course, and a couple filler credits that we are given the option to use if we need 1-3 units to hit 18 total. I, fortunately, tracked every hour spent outside of the classroom working on each course using toggl (i highly reccomend):

In a typical week, I spent about 5-6 hours/week outside of class on my Anthro seminars, and about 6-7 hours on Japanese. Japanese was a “for-fun” class so I would usually study more of that when I didn’t feel like reading dense archaeological theory.

Toggl was a really cool way to see where I was spending too much, or not enough, time on my classwork. If it was taking me more than 1.5 hours to get through a single article, I knew I was probably spending too much time on it and should move on to the next thing. My goal for the term was to stay true to the 5 Unit idea of 5-6 hours, and not over-work myself.

Toggl was also useful in tracking my mental health throughout the term, as it is very obvious to see when I just was not physically capable of ingesting 400 pages of reading. For example, election week:

Election week was really hard for me, and everyone else in the world honestly. I had various family things I was dealing with, typical existential dread, plus it was week 8-ish of the term when everything was already on fire in terms of workload. For one of my seminars (purple), we had to read a book for the following week which I was able to do the sundar after election day. However, for the days leading up to and surrounding the 4th, the only thing I could mentally handle was mindless Japanese vocab studying. One of my seminars really sufferend this week, and I straight up just didnt show up to the smaller Anth 310G class because I had only read the title of the pdf. Fortunately, I emailed my professor of my Theory class and was like “yo dude I cannot” and he replied that he understood and wouldnt call on me during that day of class.

I didn’t do a whole lot of journalling at all this term, but for this week I just wrote “pain” on most days and then YAY BIDEN at the end of it.

Weekly Schedule

Above is what a typical week looked like, some were a lot lot lot more dense, others not so much, but this was pretty average. Not all things on the calendar are work related, some are extra lectures from visiting professors that sounded interesting, or “Free Boba & Snacks Pick Up” put on by my residence. Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday were my big work days last term, where I didn’t have a whole lot of classes so I would do most of my reading then. On Tues and Thurs I had one 3-hour seminar, and M-F I had a 50 min Japanese class.

I woke up every day around 7am-ish, made a green tea, and sat at the computer to work, filter through emails, etc. On particularily open days I would go grocery shopping, go for bike rides/walks around campus, go buy food/boba.

On class-heavy days, I wouldn’t leave my computer for 8-12 hours, which is extremely ridiculous but that’s the new norm in school in 2020. This kind of stunk because all of the socializing was also on the computer, so even if I wasn’t working I was doing screen related things.

EVERY day I stopped working at 6pm. Rarely did I do readings past 6pm unless I was really slacking somewhere. From 6pm onwards I would do things like play Among Us or League of Legends with my discord friends, eat, watch movies with my partner, etc. And then most nights I would try to be in bed by 12am at the latest.

Social Life

Despite the online nature of things this term, I was suprisingly able to meet a lot of great people on campus. We were all being tested at least once a week, which made in person gatherings with 1-4 people a little less scary, especially when half of the people lived together in one household.

In the first week of school, some of the grad programs put on a “speed friending” zoom event, where I was able to connect with two people really well. We ended up doing a “slow-friending” zoom event afterwards and then created a FB group chat and added all of the people we had met into it. The group ended up being about 15 people, and we would message the group for park hangouts, going to get food, or going on walks on campus. We also had a huge get together in a park for Mid-Autumn Festival, where we sat in a socially distanced circle, chatted, and ate mooncakes.

Most of my socializing came from my online friends, and amongus was a huge savior to my mental health this term wher emy group would play literally every night. I also made a really good friend off of Bumble BFF this term, who I’ve hung out with a good amount for plant shopping and board games.

I’m very fortunate to be in a situation where I can get tested for COVID on a days notice, and very grateful that I could use that to stay a little sane. My Biggest Accomplishment this term, was not school related. but instead I hit my 365 DAY STREAK on duolingo. This was celebrated with cake. This streak has lived through literal hell and for that I am very proud.

Overall reflection:

This term was super rough, there were a lot of days where I just napped through it and a lot of days where I couldn’t bring myself to do any work. However, I think the courseload that I took was very manageable and I’m going to continue to go light on myself in that regard.

I really liked the boundaries that I set for myself this term, not working after 6pm and making time to do some fun things in the midst of chaos. I never felt like I was too far behind on work, or that I wasn’t doing enough, because I had a literal reminder in front of me that I had already put x amount of hours into something with toggl.

Sometimes in class I would feel like I didn’t know how to productively contribute to conversation, but I think thats a skill that will get better over time and not being so great at it should especially be expected in the first term of a program.

Socially I met a lot of wonderful people who also made me feel more comfortable will myself. I started using She/They pronouns which feel really comforting to me. I made a lot of little origami cranes every time I was feeling sad. I drank a lot of boba. Watched a lot of She Ra. Played a lot of games. It all ended up being okay despite the weight of everything around me.

I’m proud of all of you for making it through this year, I know it was really difficult for a lot of people in more ways than it was for me, but we’re still here! Sometimes all you can do it make it to the next day and thats such a big accomplishment on its own. after her ‘awakening’ she didn’t try to get in contact with her human family. she saw them mourn her enough and kept a safe distance.

she’s a lil scaredy cat so she just follows whatever orders ppl give her lmao

tries to cling to her humanity somewhat, she’s one of the vamps that avoids feedings and stretches them out as much as she can.

he keeps tabs on his family line, constantly checking in on ppl. he turns a few people on his bloodline, though not many. junseo (he refers to her by that name only) included.

he’s also big on tradition but is trying real hard at updating himself with the times

he used to be a notorious leader in his family’s clan but decided to take a break. he’s now enjoying life as a member in a different clan instead of being the one in charge.

he still advises the newer leaders of his family clan, though. keeps scrutiny on who wanna turn there after he had to disposed of 60 or so members after a riot a decade ago.

not that old. he was an experiment of sorts since a young vamp wanted to see if he could build an army and started turning ppl at random. atticus was among them.

however, this bitch just straight up turned his back and searched for other vamps that vibed with him more, didn’t care about being turned either.

as a human he was struggling to make ends meet and didn’t have a family of his own, instead staying with his parents. in a way, being turned felt like a huge weight was off his shoulders.

he’s really just trying to survive, has probably contemplated how he could die but doesn’t actively pursuing that. it’s an idea he toys with in case he ever gets tired of ‘living’.

aggressive, he just kinda likes fighting and is good at it. he’s a brute force kind of guy who has been learning about tactics and strategy now.

the thing he misses the most about being human is eating. he’s particularly wistful whenever he sees plums (unless these vamps can eat in which case i’ll take this off lmao).

he used to keep away from anything related to his species. possibly avoided any type of relationship in that regard bc he really wanted to be normal. when he found out that there’s a whole world of species out there, he started working on coming to terms with. at times he still struggles and wishes he could live independently but he also knows that he likes being in a group.

A Friendship to Die For

AN: I'm not going to lie, this whole story will have a dark undertone to it.

What if the Demons hadn't used Holy Water but something else while the Angels still used Just Hellfire?

What if Aziraphale never told anyone of the deception but accepted his fate so that Crowley would be safe?

What if 'Aziraphale' was released to be left alone but no matter how long 'Aziraphale' waited 'Crowley' never showed that day in the park and the came the announcement from Hell claiming 'Crowley' was dead?

What if the news drove 'Aziraphale' insane because, despite it all, all his efforts and plotting to protect the other, his best friend was still dead and worst of all: It was all his fault.

*Crowley blames himself for Aziraphale's Death because it was his plan to swap so they both survived their punishments. He was certain the Angels would use Hell Fire- and was right- while the Demons would use Holy Water.... He never considered they would use another punishment entirely.

*'Aziraphale' doesn't cope with the news of 'Crowley's death well. His emotions are like a rollercoaster as they constantly shift from denial to rage, then sorrow and grief, then back.

*Crowley has an unhealthy way of coping with Aziraphale's death: He pretends to be Aziraphale. He originally started doing it as a way to protect both himself and Aziraphale's home as he was convinced the Angel would come back at any moment- where they would then swap their bodies back- and wouldn't be too pleased to have lost his home Twice. Over time Crowley starts convincing himself he IS Aziraphale- for His Angel cannot be dead if he is His Angel- and it was Crowley, himself, who died that day.

What if 'Aziraphale' meet a white-haired, blue-eyed teen at Fell's Bookshop?

*He keeps this up for twenty-one years, despite the worry and concern of anyone around him, until he meets an eighteen-year-old by the name of Ezira in 2011 while managing Aziraphale's shop.

*At first things aren't that bad between them: 'Aziraphale' is certain the Teen is actually His Angel- he could feel it in his very bones- and doesn't want to scare the other off; (Instead of acting like Aziraphale, like he usually did, Crowley is acting like the Old Crowley once more) And for a while things seem fine.... But they're not, those who know the Truth of 'Aziraphale are concerned seeing how Crowley is acting to this human child that looks & acts so much like the real Aziraphale. (It doesn't help matters when one of them notice Crowley stalking Ezira home).

*Ezira is warned by several of them to stay away from Crowley since he is both 'Unstable' and 'dangerous' but what none of them knew was that Crowley had been on his way to drop off new books -Cough-Visit-And-Ensure-Himself-Aziraphale-Was-Still-There-And-Not-A-Figment-Of-His-Imagination-Cough- for Ezira and overheard them.

*Crowley is not happy. The way he sees it, he has lost Aziraphale twice already (even if he didn't actually lose His Angel the first time) and now those who were supposed to be His "Friends" were trying to ensure he lost Aziraphale again. �� *He does not handle is the best way possible.

*Several lethal accidents happen to befall those who were talking to Ezira that day (They barely survive by the skin of the teeth) as Crowley finds it even harder to let Ezira out of his line of sight. (He terrified if he looks away the other will disappear and leave him alone forever).

*Anathema Device-Pulsifer recognizes a Demonic Miracle for what it is, even more so when one of them almost kills her husband, Newton- after he had tried to warn the teenager who resembled the real Aziraphale away from Crowley. She begins to grow alarmingly concerned (They knew Crowley was unstable, everyone knew it, especially after Aziraphale's Death; but they didn't think he was this unstable that he would kill them just for speaking their mind. )

*Things go from bad to worse as the group finds themselves even more determined to separate Crowley from Ezira for the teen's own protection. (They try talking sense into Crowley but he is beyond listening as he's certain the others just want to see him suffer by taking away the one good thing in his life while Eriza, on the other hand, listens and promises to grant the man space.)

*Ezira tries to grant the other space and manages to stay away for all of three days before he comes home to find the other making tea in his apartment.

*Crowley doesn't blame Eriza for avoiding him, he blames the others instead of trying to scare His Angle away from him; but that's alright, he's going to fix everything.

*Crowley is determined to fix everything (He knows a -highly forbidden- ritual that could return Azirpahle both his grace and memories; but he's afraid he'll lose Eriza if he leaves him out alone so he kidnaps the teen and takes him to a home he and Aziraphale bought for their 'retirement'. (He pretty much miracle the doors leading outside to open for no one but himself.)

*The last thing Eriza remembers if drinking the tea. When he wakes it's in a bedroom he doesn't recognize and no matter how hard he tries neither the window nor the door will open. (He's made a terrible mistake, Eriza realizes as he watches with wide eyes as Mr. Fell seemed to ripple before simmering away to reveal a slender, dark-haired man wearing dark sunglasses despite them being indoors. )

*A week later; Eighteen years old, Eriza Light is announced Missing after failing to show up at both his classes and apartment.

*Crowley is a brilliant actor and manages to trick even those suspecting him of the child's disappearance that he has no part in it and is furiously searching for the teen he's certain is his Angel.

*Eriza, on the other hand, is terrified as he's beginning to understand why so many people kept trying to warn him away from 'Mr. Fell'. (Though he doubts anyone knew Mr. Fell wasn't actually Mr. Fell but another man entirely who insisted on being called 'Crowley' or 'My Dear'. )

*Eriza is frightened of Crowley -Despite his best attempts, he can't quite suppress his unstable mindset especially when Erzia tries to bring up going home- but finds The large oversized snake that keeps sneaking into his lap comforting. ('He's living a Nightmare, it was the only way Eriza could think to describe his current state of existence, a horrid nightmare he doubts he'll ever wake from....Well, at least he wasn't completely alone with this lunatic.')

*Crowley doesn't fault/blame Eriza for anything. He knows he's scaring the other- and it doesn't help those bastards have put ideas into the teen's head- but he'll make everything better soon enough. Until then though....Well, His Angel always did like snakes and who could possibly resist one big enough to cuddle with? (Fortunately for him, Ezira is scared of giant snakes as a normal person would be. Though he'll still be cautious about sleeping in the same room as one seeing as large snakes are known to eat men/women/children and he would rather not be eaten in his sleep.) (Crowley thinks his reasoning is ridiculous -He's not going to eat his angel- but can't fault the other's logic.... That still doesn't stop him from Miracling himself inside and standing guard/watching the other sleep.)

*A month passes...Than Two...and then three, but no one ever finds any signs of Eriza Light. Eriza, himself, is beginning to feel worn down and tired from all his constant escape attempts. Crowley is pleasantly happy (He doesn't really min Eriza trying to escape him because he knows for the other to actually do so he'll need a miracle which he can't perform) as he brings home dinner from the Ritz.

*Things get a bit darker from here as Crowley works to gather all the ingredients to complete the ritual while trying to win over Ezira Light (in human form) like he once did Aziraphale.... So far, his snake form is having better luck then him; but at least- even if the other doesn't realize it- Ezira is still talking to him.

*Mulitple beings (Angels, Humans, and Demons) Die at Crowley's hands.

*Ezira tries his hand at another method: Maybe if he figured out what was wrong with this 'Crowley' and fixed it, he could do home. (AKA: Demonic Miracles might be cheating but Crowley is desperate for Aziraphale to talk to his humanoid self.)

Notes:

*Crowley is mentally unstable and while he never wants- nor plans- to hurt Eriza he tends to forget:

1.)Eriza is human instead of an angel. Therefore needs to be dealt with 'Kid Gloves' so to speak (Like all other humans) but Crowley tends to forget that leading to plenty of bruises and broken bones. (Remember: Just because you fix it, doesn't mean you didn't break it.)

2.)What he sees as 'normal' most sane people would see as inhumane.

3.)It is not healthy for anyone of his age (6,000 YRS +)-(Or anyone of any age for that matter)- to always be watching/stalking/kidnapping children.

4.) Even if Eriza is Azirpahle, he has no memories of being so and therefore does not know Crowley like he used to.

*Eriza Light actually is Aziraphale, who was granted a second chance by God but has no memories of being anything but a human. (As far as he is concerned this is his first, and only, Life. Therefore, he has no memories of Crowley and as far as he's concerned Crowley is insane. (...He's not completely wrong.)

*The ritual spoke of is forbidden for a reason. Not only does it take time to create but the ingredients for it require the Deaths of several Angels, Demons, and human to complete. Alongside the living sacrifice of the person who's memories/Grace, you're trying to restore. (In other words, Crowley is going to have to kill several Angels, Demons, and humans before killing Eriza to get Azriphale back.) Once completed the Target (Aziraphale) will have no memories of his human life. To him, he was just talking to God about a second chance and then woke up to his Crowley hovering overhead.

SHOW NOTES Episode 15: Trap Jaw Ant vs. Peregrine Falcon

We're feeling the need... the need for speed! On this episode, Kirsten and Adam discuss some very brisk beasts whilst Rich responds to one of our listeners and explains primate taxonomy.

Attack

Extremely aggressive and will readily attack any intruders in their area using their strong jaws and stingers.

Stings contains a mixture of formic acid and protein

In humans; records of immediate burning which usually dissipates after an hour

16% of bites result in allergic reaction in humans; patches of red, itchy, swollen areas lasting a week

Sociality

Live in colonies that consists of the queen and its workers

Polydomous nest structure - there are multiple nests for a single colony

Neighbouring nests will not fight (instead sharing food) but nests more than 10 m away would be highly aggressive

Individual nests contain ~200 ants

They have a strict foraging area for each colony and the ants are actually quite respectful of that

They recognise ants from their own colony using a behaviour called anttennation (touch each other with their antennae on the head or on the antennae of the other ant). They produce a volatile substance called dichloromethane to recognise each other during this behaviour (ants from different colonies have different amounts of this substance). Once recognition happens they will do one of four things:

Basic alertness, both ants open their mandibles to about 180°

Alarm, basic alertness with fast random body movements and release of alarm pheromone

Attack with mandibles, use of the mandibles in order to strike a blow to the opponent

Attack with sting, bending abdomen forward to use its sting to hurt the opponent

Diet Most of the time they will forage in the leaf litter. They are generalist predators, preying on food around 3-4 mm in length including termites, ants, worms, butterflies, flies, beetles and spiders.

Habitat and Distribution

Widespread - from southern Costa Rica throughout tropical South America, the West Indies (except Cuba and the Bahamas), and on the Galapagos Islands.

Most often in lowlands, usually in tropical rainforests

More tolerant of dry conditions than many other species in the genus

Typically form nests in soft and humid grounds in areas protected from direct sunlight and areas where there is a low chance of disturbance by wind, rain etc., including in gardens under rocks, plant containers etc.

Speed The fastest moving animal appendages within the animal kingdom: their mandibles. Stimulating one of the 4 trigger hairs will cause a reaction within 10 microseconds:

Mandibles will snap shut at speeds of around 120-230km per hour (close within 130 microseconds)

The force produced by the closing of their mandibles is about 300 times that of their body weight

The mandibles are kept in place with a latch called the clypeus. Once the latch is released, all of the energy stored is quickly released and the mandibles close (like a crossbow). They can also use their jaws to catapult themselves to escape predators.

Evolution

The mandibles of O. bauri are an exaggerated form of other ant mandibles.

Muscles found in the mandibles of O. bauri are also found in other ants, although in this species they are larger and similar to those in cicadas.

Mandibles and muscles are exaptations: useful features not originally selected for their current use.

For example; large mandibles were selected for to help carry food but they were then also able to be used for defence and hunting.

Other ant genera with similar jaws include Strumigenys, Mystrium, Myrmoteras and Anochetus. It is theorised that trap-jaw mandibles evolved at least four times because those ants with this feature do not all fall within the same phylogenetic group. Each time this feature evolved, it evolved from a different part of the mouthparts (O. bauri’s trap jaw is built from the mandible joint; however, the Strumigenys trigger is built from the upper lip). This is convergent evolution.

Average 1kg, body length 34-58cm and wingspan 74-120cm

Females 15-20% larger and 40-50% heavier than males

Slate grey back, brown/black barred breast & under wings and thick black “mutton chops” with yellow eye rings, white throat and yellow legs

Speed

Cruising flight speed = 40-97km/hr

Gliding on thermals 62-64kph – soaring on thermals up to 330m altitude

Pursuing prey: approaching 100kph

Max horizontal flight likely 105-115kph

Aerial hunters of, primarily, other birds like pigeons and ducks but known to take small mammals, reptiles, fish and insects. May hunt anytime in day but in brightly lit cities can hunt at night. Main method of hunting is “stoop hunting” using their very keen vision:

Fly 50 to 1500m above prey then dive

Hit one wing of their prey, capture with talons then kill by severing neck vertebrae with “tooth” on beak (tomial tooth, a sharp triangular-shaped ridge on the outer edge)

Eat on the wing or take to feeding perch, may save food items for later

Typical diving speed is 112-140kph BUT recorded speeds between 90-400kph (400 is theoretical limit actual recorded limit is 389kph, in 2005) (90m/s)

Small bony cones (tubercles) protrude in nostril openings, guiding airflow away from nostrils and reducing pressure. Nictitating membrane in eye spread tears and clears debris. Tapered wings are pulled in to make teardrop shape whilst diving.

Mate for life and high fidelity to breeding territory

Pair bond indicated by male and female roosting near each other, then sitting side by side.

May “peep” at each other, preening and nibbling toes or bill

Both sexes then may engage in ledge displays as well as aerial displays

A pair will hunt cooperatively; females may beg for food & males will throw it to her

Nests (eyries) are scraped out hollows or old nests from other birds on rocks or manmade structures

Breed in the spring (one per year, rarely a second if clutch fails): clutch of 2-6 pinkish to brown eggs, one laid every 1-2 days

Both look after & feed young

Incubation is around a month and chicks fledge 40-42 days old – still reliant for up to 6 weeks after fledging so aerial food transfers common (adults drop food and young chase)

40% survival in first year, adults 70%

Breed at typically 2-4 yrs and may live 17-20 years but average is 13, longest known is 25 years (captive)

Vocalisation Primarily in courtship, between babies and parents or antagonistic interactions.

“Ee-chup”: between two peregrines, can be towards intruder/potential mate or begging

Wailing: “I want something to change” could be they are just impatient waiting for food transfer or want another peregrine to go away

“kak”: “get out of here enemy!” – against enemy species

Chitter: a rapid chi chi chi sound – low volume and private usually by male prior to or during copulation (he will also curl his talons to prevent hurting the female)

Raising the feathers and bill gaping are typical of aggressive posturing. Submission is indicated by the feathers being held tight to the body and the head held down, with beak averted.

Threats & Conservation Predators: typically only larger birds of prey but when young also mammals like foxes, wolves, weasels, wild cats.

Classed globally as least concern because so widespread and population appears fairly stable.

Large population decline in 1950s to 1970s: eggshell thinning and embryo mortality from organochloride pesticide use (especially DDT and dieldrin). Top of the food chain so pesticides accumulate in tissues. Banned in many countries in early 1970s (although some countries still used today – Central and South America)

Populations have been able to start recovering alongside reintroduction programmes. All breeding pairs vanished in E. USA but in 1990s were taken off federal list of endangered spp.

Other threats:

Habitat destruction and degradation including loss of wetlands (prey species) & nest sites

Poaching, removal of eggs and chicks

Disturbance from e.g. rock climbing

Historically affected by shooting in UK - sometimes accused of killing farm animals but they actually help much more than hinder as they control pest species.

Apes and monkeys are both primates - over 300 species including humans.

Primates - apes, monkeys, prosimians e.g. lemurs: have hands, hand-like feet, forward facing eyes, are pretty good at swigging in trees.

Great apes - humans, gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, bonobos: almost naked face, round mostly hairless ears, opposable thumbs longer arms than legs (except humans), don't have cheek pouches.

Lesser apes - gibbons: live in pairs for life instead of big groups.

Evolutionarily, apes are closer to humans than monkeys - similar basic body structure, clever (chimps closest genetically), better language and communication skills, better cognitive skills, complex social groups. The easiest thing to do is have a look at his bum - apes don't have a tail. Apes tend to live longer, larger and have bigger (relative) brains. Can see colour and rely on vision more than smell. Apes have a broad chest.

Monkeys - baboons, macaques, marmosets tamarins, capuchins: tend to run on all four legs where as apes are more upright and swing between trees and can walk on 2 legs. Many more types than apes.

Old world monkeys - Africa and Asia: diurnal, narrow downward nostrils, longer hind legs than forearms, flattened nails, prominent bum pads, tails not prehensile, larger than new world. Subfamilies Ceropithecinae (cheek pouched) and Colobinae (leaf eating)

New world monkeys - live in neotropical forests of new world: wide, circular and spaced apart nostrils, smaller, long sometimes prehensile tails, no bum pads, no cheek pouches. Subgroups: Callitrichidae (tamarins, marmosets) and Cebidae monkeys (capuchin, owl, titi, saki, spider, woolly etc.)

Prosimian - not monkey or apes (before monkeys), lemurs, lorises, tarsiers: most primitive of all primates, generally nocturnal and sensitive, large eyes, large ears which can move independently, complex tactile hairs, strong sense of smell. Specialised and tropical - live in tropical woodlands only.

Monkeys, apes & prosimians have different dental formulas.
