Lucy POV. TW: Panic Attack, Mental trauma/coping, PTSD

The university and Lucy’s professors had been really wonderful about everything, even offering to convert her classes to an online option so she could continue. She wasn’t happy about the idea of taking a sabbatical from college, but there was no way she could manage. Not only was it difficult for her to leave the apartment because seeing anyone that remotely resembled Touka sent her into a panic attack, focusing on anything at all was a struggle. Night after night it haunted her dreams and spilled into her waking moments. She��d run scenarios through her mind, all the what if’s, should haves, could haves, often leading to horrifying outcomes. They’d survived, yes, but at what cost?

She didn’t feel the same anymore as if a part of her did die in that apartment or fled to a hidden part of her brain too scared to come back out. The once happy, positive person had become a nervous wreck unable to control her emotions or outbursts. Lucy’s bedroom became her safe zone from everyone, even those closest to her, ashamed and insecure of their judgement. In her heart she knew friends like Levy or Natsu wouldn’t judge... but tell that to her broken mind, because her brain was the one in control at the moment, and insisted they’d look down on her.

All the irrational thoughts. It was her fault for not being careful, her fault she was kidnapped. Lucy knew Touka was growing dangerous, yet walking alone, at night... utterly stupid. She should have been overzealous at protecting herself, but oh no, stupid girl didn’t want to believe anything would actually happen. Until it did. And now she was even more pathetic and weak for not getting a hold of her emotions, for not controlling it instead of it controlling her. The danger had passed. They were alive. Touka was in jail. It should be over, but it wasn’t. Lucy couldn’t move past that night, stuck in an endless loop of fear. So many nights she’d wake up in a panic covered in sweat, the fading images of red... blood... like dripping down a tv screen in a horror movie. It was Natsu’s blood she saw and his screams when the knife had sliced him open.

The first week after the event had been difficult, sitting through an interview with Gajeel, and reliving all the mental wounds. It took several hours to get through it all despite the man doing his best to go easy on her. Each time painful parts came up, Lucy felt the anxieties rise, the mental blurring, the shaking, literally a physical shaking of her body in an effort to dispel the rise of adrenaline coursing through her veins. Interviews are best done without any other potential witnesses in the room to avoid cross contamination, but after Lucy’s first two attempts to talk to investigators failed, Gajeel was forced to allow Natsu in with explicit instructions to sit quietly and say nothing while the woman talked. Of course, Natsu’d been fine with that, he’d do anything to help, even if it was just holding Lucy’s hand. But it only added to her embarrassment. Surely Natsu will eventually tire of having an unstable girlfriend.

Then there was the therapist Levy helped Lucy to find which she hoped would help her to quickly get over the events and move on. So, when the woman explained that such traumas take patience and time to process, Lucy was devastated. It almost felt like nothing was going her way anymore, falling dominoes with no end in sight. She felt so ashamed for having to see the woman in the first place, and now she’s told it would be a long journey towards recovery. Just great! What’s next?!

“Lu?” Levy knocked before opening the bedroom door. “Are you gonna eat your dinner in here again? It’s ready.”

With the curtains drawn, Lucy’s room was dark and the only light available was a small desk lamp next to the bed set to a low setting. She peeked out from under her blanket. “I-I’ll come out in a minute, thanks Lev.”

As soon as her friend closed the door, Lucy exhaled in relief. She knew Levy was worried about the amount of time she stayed holed up in the room, so to dispel some of those concerns, Lucy would join her roommate for meals. She quickly applied a gauze wrap, threw on her long sleeve hoodie, and left the room. It made her feel safer to be shrouded and covered up, so gone were her skirts and tank tops, and hello to long sleeves and pants. If she could cover her face from the world, it would make her happy. Even her overall hygiene suffered. Lucy would forget to bathe or wash her hair for days on end, and it took Levy or Natsu with gentle prodding to get her to do it. She would wear the same clothes for a week if it wasn’t for Levy who made sure she changed at least every couple of days. Hell, she’d starve if her roommate wasn’t feeding her. This was a frustrating cycle, not having the mental energy to take care of herself, then feeling bad because they had to help her with things, which made her feel even worse.

It tore at Lucy’s heart to watch Natsu going through this process with her. She knew he was going through his own struggles, not just mental, but physically healing from his wounds. And here she was, the basket case of instability. Bless him, he never gave up no matter how distant she grew, but after that night, Lucy really didn’t want to talk about anything out loud, not that night, and certainly not the true extent of her pain from it. Both Levy and Natsu knew only what she couldn’t hide from them. Like the panic attacks, and since she really didn’t want them to see her go through one or what she’d resorted to, to calm herself, so the safest solution was stay quiet and not trigger them in their presence.

To show his dedication, Natsu even went with her to her therapy sessions and waited outside the office. Lucy knew it was costing him money to do this, because she couldn’t ride a train which meant cab rides every single trip. It bothered her a lot, but she did her best to hide it, and besides there was one small measure of security in having him at her side when she needed to venture out into the public.

“So, the nightmares are still a problem?” the therapist questioned Lucy. “Are you sure you don’t want to try a medication? It would help to ease them until we can get things under control.”

Lucy gripped to the hem of her sweater. “I just don’t wanna become addicted to that stuff...”

“That’s understandable. But not all are addictive, and I’ll be here to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand.”

“I... I don’t think I’m ready.”

“Okay, that’s fine,” the woman smiled. “Remember I’m just here to help you, at your pace. I won’t force you take anything you don’t want to.”

“Thank you.”

“What about the breathing and relaxation techniques? When you feel the anxiety rising, are you trying out the steps?”

“I try... I don’t think I’m very successful at it.”

“Does it work sometimes?”

Lucy pauses for a few seconds in thought before nodding yes.

“See, that is progress!” The woman encouraged excitedly. “Two weeks ago, it didn’t help at all, and now it works sometimes. It’s a big step forward Lucy.”

“Doesn’t feel like it is...” Lucy mumbled.

“I know it’s hard to see it for yourself, and that’s okay. These things take time and practice. Do you remember what I said about these things?”

“Not really.” Which was true. During the first week when the therapist explained the processes, Lucy had stopped listening as soon as the woman said it would take time.

“Let me ask you a question. You like to write stories, right?”

“Yeah.”

“When you first started, were you able to just write perfect stories.”

“Pfft, no.”

“Then how did you get better at it?”

Lucy rolled her eyes, knowing where this was going. “Practice.”

“Yes! The PTSD requires learning new coping skills as well as unlearning irrational ones. To do both takes practice. The more we work at it, the easier it will get, I promise. One day you’ll be able to look back at this experience and feel stronger for it.”

She really wanted to believe the woman, but it was so hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel! Tears well up in Lucy’s eyes, seconds before they start to flow down her cheeks. “Why is this so hard?! I just wanna get back to normal!” She could feel her anxieties rising. “I... I-I don’t wanna talk about it anymore! I just wanna forget it ever happened!”

The woman reached over and took Lucy’s hand, applying a strategic amount of pressure while rubbing her thumb over the webbing in a counter stimulus. She softened in tone. “I wish I could say that would work, but in order to get past it, you need to confront it. Together we’re gonna turn the boogieman into Casper the friendly ghost.”

It was such a weird way of putting things, it caused Lucy’s mind to snap out of the anxiety and snort a sniffling laugh in response. “Casper the friendly ghost?!”

“It was the first thing to pop into my mind,” the therapist laughed too. “The point is, we’re going to work together and slowly bring you to a place where this no longer scares you.”

“O-Okay...”

The rest of the session was tough, and Lucy had come close to a panic attack several times, but as a trained therapist, the woman stepped in at the right times to bring her levels down again using breaks and breathing routines. Sure, with a professional in front of you, it wasn’t as bad, but doing this on her own, the attacks were still winning. At the end of the session, the woman suggested a new technique to try out based on Lucy’s love of writing.

“You’ve heard of art therapy, so just think of this as a different form of creative therapy. Writing a diary is helpful to get out your feelings out in a healthy way. But let’s take it one step forward to use your skills in fiction writing. I want you to try before the next session, writing a story where you interject your emotions, feelings, whatever you want into the characters and story. Kind of like your character becomes you, but now you get to control what happens to them after the trauma they endure.”

“Wait, so you want me to write about a character that goes through what I went through?! Like torture my own character?!”

“Yes, to put it bluntly. Take your pain and unleash it onto the fictional character. It’s a much healthier way of releasing your anger or frustration in something that can’t really be hurt. Do whatever you want to them. But remember you also get to give them the ending you want to. It’s about utilizing a tool you’re already comfortable with and taking back some control. It’ll be normal if you cry, scream, and get upset through the process, but that’s okay, because instead of holding it all in, you’re getting your feelings out.”

Lucy slumped back in her seat. It sounded strange, yet at the same time made a bit of sense to her. Angst type stories were not really her forte, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t do it, especially since pain is all she was channeling at the moment. She sighed. “I’ll try.”

“And that’s totally okay. All I ask is that you give it a try.”

Beyond The Veil: Chapter 14

Sometimes, Midoriya thinks he must have crossed some particularly vengeful god during his past life.

There is literally no other explanation for this.

Today started out fine, great even, when they had arrived at the USJ. He and Uraraka bonded over their mutual awe in Thirteen for what the Pro Hero has accomplished and Muska was standing a little to the side but behind him, a shield to whatever or whoever came up behind them (not that that was on purpose but he appreciated it all the same). He noticed Aizawa-sensei whisper something to Pro Hero Thirteen and he had wondered about it until he saw the man hold up a discrete 3 fingers. All Might. His time limit.

Oh.

Ignoring a creepy feeling of familiar weariness that fought its way up his spine, today was supposed to be fine, Midoriya returned his attention to the lecture Thirteen was giving about the dangers of using one's quirk on another without the proper training. (Training that people encouraged Kacchen to try, to harm with-) Suddenly, he was grabbed back by Muska’s hand. Turning wide eyes in her direction, in confusion, and he felt a pit drop in his stomach when he took in her expression. Wary, scared, and serious. Something was about to happen, something that wasn’t good.

Sure, it’s only been 4 days since he’s been able to consistently spend time with Muska. Reliably, one wouldn’t fully trust someone after only 4 days but Midoriya isn’t one to do reliably. He doesn’t rely on anything, that makes him vulnerable and his life has taught him that you can’t be vulnerable. Instead, he does what he’s always done. A habit he’s never been able to break since the day he turned 5.

He analyzes.

Muska does several things consistently. 1; she always watches someone's mannerisms when they talk. It seems to be subconscious and after a few minutes of watching she tends to adopt some of that person's mannerisms for herself during the conversation. Midoriya understands the need to do that on an empathetic level. He may not adopt other peoples mannerisms, but he adopts a personality that will prevent the other from getting irritated or harmful towards him. 2; she never speaks first when she’s put in an environment with new people unless she has too. 3; when her guardian showed up at the infirmary, Muska dropped her mask and became entirely comfortable. Comfortable enough to speak first and joke around with even more sarcasm than he’s heard before. 4; when something screams danger on some kind of energy level (Her quirk was so cool!), much like with the battle trials before Kacchan released his gauntlet, she freezes.

Muska was frozen.

Snapping his head around to the plaza where the fountain was starting to splutter, the place where Muska’s gaze was locked, Midoriya called out to Aizawa-sensei.

“Aizawa-sensei! Viridis noticed something strange in the plaza!”

The lights began to flicker and shut off for a moment before coming back on. Aizawa-sensei had already snapped into a defensive stance as he turned towards the plaza himself, Thirteen mirrored his actions and that’s when Midoriya noticed it. A back mist that seemed to fluctuate had appeared in front of the fountain. It spazzed and startled until it started steadily growing larger until it was large enough to span the length of several people. Slowly, oh so slowly like time was solved down to compensate for the growing fear, someone walked out of the mist.

He was covered in hands, Midoriya prays that they aren’t actually from human bodies but he doubt’s it, had pale blue hair and stood in a slouched posture that put Aizawa-sensei’s to shame. Midoriya couldn’t see his mouth due to the hand hiding it, but based on the way it moved the man was saying something. Next was a bird mutation(?) based giant that had it’s brain exposed and-

So many. So many people were flooding the plaza. Aizawa-sensei tensed and Thirteen took a step forward in front of the students, a hand raised to usher them back. Muska’s grip tightened until he was sure it would probably bruise but that didn't matter. Nothing else mattered except for the sternly, steel laced, spoken words of Aizawa- no of Eraserhead echoed around them.

“Stay back! Those are villains, Thirteen protect the students!”

Shouta Aizawa hated field trips. Locked in chaperone duty with glorified overpowered toddlers is never a fun experience and usually ended up with at least one injury. The size varies but the USJ trip had ended in broken bones and a concussion before so he was justified in his distaste. Plus, he would much rather spend the time getting a nap or teaching situational awareness. Teens always seemed to lack this particularly life saving skill.

Standing there in front of a villain covered in hands, handy-man as he’s been mentally referring to him, as his elbow ached painfully Shouta made a vow to himself:

No more fucking feild trips.

Nedzu owes him a raise and paid leave. (Not that he would take the vacation, he’s too much of a worry driven workaholic) Really, the day had started somewhat normally as well.

After waking up after his nap from last night's patrol, Shouta had downed his 2 coffees as usual and headed to UA where he promptly collapsed on the faculty room couch for another nap. Waking up at 10 minutes before the bell, Shouta responded to a few texts (From Eras, dropping the -san due to her insistence) and headed to class to wrangle the overgrown toddlers onto a bus and they shipped out for USJ.

Thirteen was always a pleasure to work with, they were nice and knew when he was in the mood to speak or not so that was a plus. He got the brats somewhat under control and Thirteen started their usual lecture as he observed.

That's when everything decided to go to shit.

Because of course the world just never gives him a break.

He hadn’t noticed at first, but when Midoriya called out to him despite the kids obvious anxiety with no stutter or hesitance he snapped immediately to attention. The fountain started sputtering as if on cue and the lights had powered off for a split second before a goddamn warp quirk dragged hundreds of villains into the USJ plaza. How nice of them.

“Has the exercise already started?”

Shouta was adding in observational awareness classes as soon as possible, regular class schedule be damned. (If they even get out of this mess-) With his hero persona in full affect, Shouta ordered,

“Stay back! Those are villains! Thirteen, Protect the students!”

Launching himself down the stairs, Shouta gripped his already flaring capture scarf and braced for impact at the bottom of the stairs. The thrum of a steady beat in his chest acted as the tempo as he got to work.

The closest, 2 villains with obvious mutations, 10 and 2 o’clock.

Two strands of capture weapon went flying, strangling the villains and he pulled, launching them into each other with a painful thud. With a sharp movement, the scarf came whipping back into ready position as the villains laid unconscious at his feet.

Next, 3 villains, only one of which was a mutant, between 11 and 12 o’clock.

The burn behind his eyes as his quirk activated was an afterthought, he was relieved it was an easy patrol last night, and he left two of the villains quirkless. Their surprise acted as an opening as he launched his knee into the solar plexus of the mutant type, sending him careening into the other two. Yanking the two together like bowling pins for the mutant, the three went sprawling onto the ground.

Like clockwork, Shouta slowly started working on the villain's numbers. His breaths intertwined with the beat of his feet against the ground. Each punch, each kick, perfectly timed in a rhythm only he knew the direction of. He hoped that the students managed to get away but he knew better. The enemy had a warper. God fucking damnit. None of his the kids were going to die on his watch. Not if he had anything to say about it.

Continuous fighting, villains upon villains. No matter how many he took down there was another one waiting to just fill the spot. They were low level thugs but there were enough of them to be a danger, he works best in spontaneous small fights after all. Shouta fought his way through them, punching his way into their focus, steadily drawing their attention and bodies further into the plaza. He needed to get them away from the stairs where his students were currently waiting at the top.

“THIRTEEN!”

Fuck.

Shouta had forgotten to keep track of the warper, who was now standing (floating(?)) at the top of the staircase that was missing over half his class. Dodging a fist, he jumped back, closer to the fountain now he picked up the sound of fain mummering. He heard numbers being thrown around, first 27, then 25, 23, 20, 18, and more. He racked his brain for an answer to the why one of the villains was counting but he didn’t fully register his answer until there was an indescribable agony shooting from his elbow. Gritting his teeth so hard they should have cracked to prevent the scream that wanted to be released, Shouta kneed Handy-man in the stomach and backed up a few meters. His arm limp at his side.

He spared a quick glance at it and noticed that his skin was flaking off.

A quick flash of a memory swept through his brain and Shouta cursed.

Disintegration.

And based off of what the gate looked like two days prior? It was powerful.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has estimated that 0.7 percent of 13- to 17-year-olds in the United States, about 150,000, identify as transgender. Dr. John Steever, assistant professor of pediatrics at Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center in Manhattan, who runs its transgender health program and has evaluated over 500 patients from ages 8 to 23, said that almost 95 percent of the transmasculine teenagers in the program bind.

Binders are not classified as medical devices, but some doctors and parents have concerns about their safety. (Common-sense binding guidelines include: Don’t use Ace bandages or duct tape, don’t bind at night, limit a binder to eight to 10 hours a day, don’t shower in it, don’t wear two, and don’t wear one that is too small.)

Though breast compression has been around hundreds of years — think of corsets — commercial binders, primarily sold online, have been available for about 15 years. Marli Washington, 26, a transgender man and founder of GC2B Transitional Apparel, an online binder company, wrote in an email that the company had had “at least a 200 percent growth” since 2015.

Some transgender teens say they buy binders so that they can “pass” as male or to diminish feelings of discomfort with the body known as body dysphoria. And though wearing binders is temporary, their use can be associated with later medical transition. Dr. Steever said most of his patients who use binders “then tell me the next things they want to do, like testosterone, mastectomy and maybe phalloplasty. Ninety-five percent of the people I’ve evaluated get started on cross-hormones.” (Cross-gender hormone treatment in young people may affect future fertility, but data is limited.)

For transgender or gender-nonconforming teens who cannot afford binders, which start at around $30, there are free binder programs. FTM Essentials runs an application and lottery for those age 24 and under. Point of Pride, a transgender nonprofit based in Eugene, Ore., ships binders free to people of any age who express need and has sent over 4,000 nationally and internationally.

Often, teenagers first learn about binders through YouTube videos hosted by young people. An instructional video called “Chest binding” by a Norwegian teenager named Kovu Kingsrod, who wears as many as three sports bras a day, has more than a million views.

Tami Staas, 51, a schoolteacher who lives in Tempe, Ariz., and is president of the Arizona Trans Youth and Parent Organization, has a 21-year-old son who was assigned female at birth and who started binding at 12. He wore a binder about 12 hours a day for five years. He had trouble in gym class and breathing trouble.

“It was like trying to run a marathon in a tight bustier,” Ms. Staas said. “It was difficult for me to weigh: Am I doing the right thing? Is it causing irreparable damage? It was very difficult to watch him cause himself physical pain in order to be comfortable in his own skin.” At 18, he had a double mastectomy, or top surgery, and now takes testosterone weekly.

A 17-year-old in Phoenix who binds daily and asked to be identified only by the initials J.M. said he started binding at 13. To maximize the compression, he bought a binder one size too small and wore it at night. “My arms and hands would feel numb and tingly off and on,” he emailed, “from how tight the material was around that area.” When he removed the binder, he found his skin “severely chafed and raw.”

He added: “The divots left behind from those times took months to heal. In all honesty, I couldn’t have cared less about the damage being created, just that my chest was flat.”

Dr. Ilana Sherer, a pediatrician and founder of the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at the University of California, San Francisco, Benioff Children’s Hospital, emailed that “binders can be physically very uncomfortable and can cause problems especially if overused or ill-fitting, so it’s important that every youth weigh the risks and benefits for themselves and have access to quality, well-fitting binders.”

But even those are correlated with negative health effects. Though there have been no studies on binding and adolescent health, because of ethical concerns about research on minors, a 2017 study by students at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Boston University School of Medicine, and the Boston University School of Public Health looked at 1,800 transmasculine adults with a median age of 23. Seventy-eight percent of respondents said they had bound for over a year, over half bound an average of seven days a week, and 66.6 percent were interested in top surgery. An additional 13.1 percent had already had the surgery.

Participants reported a statistically significant improvement in mood after binding. They also reported decreased gender dysphoria, anxiety and depression. As for physical effects, 97.2 percent of the group that bound reported at least one negative physical symptom, such as back pain, overheating, chest pain and shortness of breath. Other symptoms included numbness, bad posture and lightheadedness.

Commercial binders were highly associated with negative outcomes (20 of 28 negative outcomes), as were elastic bandages (14 of 28), and duct tape or plastic wrap (13 of 28). One reason may be that commercial binders lend a false sense of security, leading wearers to keep them on too long or sleep in them.

The American Academy of Pediatrics does not have an official position on binding. But in a policy statement last year on care of transgender and gender-diverse children and adolescents, it advocated a “gender-affirmative care model,” where providers convey that “variations in gender identity and expression are normal aspects of human diversity.”

But some worry that parental efforts to affirm a young person’s identity by supporting binding may contribute to self-hate. Jane Wheeler, a co-founder of an organization called Rethink Identity Medicine Ethics, which examines standards of care for gender-variant children and youth, said binding “feeds into a normalization of body hatred, that some forms of body hatred are O.K.”

Brie Jontry is the spokeswoman for 4thWaveNow, which describes itself as “a community of parents and others concerned about the medicalization of gender atypical youth.” Her daughter, now 15, told Ms. Jontry that she was trans at 11 and wanted a binder. Ms. Jontry bought her a running bra, but her daughter felt it was not constricting enough, refusing to leave the house until she got a binder.

The first one she tried, at age 12, was too tight, Ms. Jontry thought, so they returned it and ordered a larger one. Her daughter, who was home-schooled, bound at home and every time she went out. She stopped running, rock-climbing, backpacking and swimming.

“We would go for our evening walk and she would get winded and dizzy,” Ms. Jontry said. “She stopped climbing trees. She stopped doing things where any degree of upper-body flexibility was important.”

“Binding is not benign,” Ms. Jontry said. “It encourages the idea that people’s distress and anger and trauma should be turned inward toward their own bodies instead of outward toward the culture that feels oppressive to them.”

Dr. Sherer wrote in an email that “it’s strange to me that someone would think of a binder as being a form of self-harm when there are so many other garments used by gender-typical people to change their appearance that are also extremely uncomfortable (hello high heels …).”

But binder use in teenagers may become a thing of the past. Ms. Staas, the Arizona teacher, said that several members of her group take hormone blockers to prevent developing female sex characteristics.

Those youths, she wrote in an email, “will not develop breast tissue and therefore will not have a need to bind their chests.”

To celebrate their new building and the success that has let up to being able to move into it, the company is throwing a party for all employees on March 24. Attendance is listed as non-mandatory, but, for idols, management will be strongly insisting they attend in order to show respect and thankfulness for the work of all of the other employees. It will be hard to get out of without a good reason, but there will be free food and drinks, though it’s a company party, so nothing will be permitted to get too out of hand.

After a filming for online video series What The?! ASMR, where she’ll be asked to bring three items of her own choice to do ASMR with, the month is pretty low intensity, as she may be growing used to in the time since her last comeback. Her team is constantly reviewing potential songs, but haven’t locked one in as a comeback title track yet. She will be given the news that Dimensions will be having all three of their soloists participate in busking next month to help promote the new soloist, though, so she’s permitted to choose and practice up to six songs of her choice, though this must include her most recent title track as well as at least one other title track of her choice and at least one vocal or dance cover of her choice. She’s allowed to perform a song with one or both of the other soloists if she’d like.

To celebrate his second debut anniversary, he’ll be throwing a fan meeting at Yonsei University as a follow-up to his fan meeting in Bangkok last month. His official lightstick will be released on the first of the month is celebration of his approaching anniversary as well. As far as comeback prep goes, he’s expected to rehearse for his live performances since he’ll be playing acoustic guitar for both the title track and b-side “White” stages. He’ll also shoot for the album’s photobook.  He will also be given the news that Dimensions will be having all three of their soloists participate in busking next month to help promote the new soloist, though, so he’s permitted to choose and practice up to six songs of his choice, though this must include his most recent title track as well as at least one other title track of his choice and at least one vocal of his choice. Since the company stylists don’t already have her measurements, she’ll have two fittings for her music video and stage outfits before taking off to New Zealand to shoot her teaser photos and music video. Next month, she’ll participate in busking with the company’s other two soloists to help promote her debut. She’ll mostly be performing her album songs, but she’ll be permitted one vocal cover of her choice to practice this month and perform next month if she so wishes.

Music show promotions end mid-month without much eventfulness, which is actually a good thing considering Gal.actic’s track record. Next month, the group will be holding a fan meeting in Guangzhou, China, which will be shortly followed by a mini concert in Seoul in May, so they’ll be in rehearsals for that this month. They’ll mostly be performing their most recent title tracks and their most popular ones, but each member will be granted a solo stage to perform one song of their choice. This can be a cover or a solo song they’ve released.

Alien

As promised, March is the final month of touring before they get a break from large scale concerts for a while. They’re in the States for two weeks out of the month before they return to Seoul and they’ll be going back next month. Fans have been demanding a break, but Dimensions has too much in the plans for Alien to grant them one, and, instead, while on tour, the members will record another new English song, “Love U”. Once they return to Seoul, it will be time to record the songs they haven’t yet recorded for their next Japanese album.

Their comeback is still two months off, but the MARS members must begin learning the choreography for their title track this month as Dimensions would like the choreography to be as strong as MARS is known for even though their concept this time is lighter than their most successful comebacks have been in order to fit the late spring/early summer season. The members will also go in to try out potential outfits for promotions ahead of filming their music video next month.

7ROPHY

7ROPHY were promised to begin working on another comeback this month and management weren’t lying. From the beginning of the month, they’ll have a concept meeting for their comeback and then begin recording the chosen songs for the track list. They’ll be making their comeback in May, but their fifth anniversary since debut is this month. Four days before their anniversary, they’ll be in Taipei, Taiwan to hold their first solo fan meeting for Taiwanese fans. The set list will be pretty standard with their top title tracks and most recent b-sides. For their anniversary, each member will be asked to film a video with a message to fans.

Unity

The beginning of the month is the busiest for Unity members. They have yet another magazine photo shoot and then will be flying out on March 8 to the US to perform in Texas, before returning to Seoul on the 11th. From the 12th to the 18th, all members will be granted a vacation by Dimensions unless they have solo schedules to attend during that time. After returning from vacation, the members will have rehearsals in preparation for their Japanese tour dates next month.

In the days following their return, they’ll be busy with more promotional content filming. Fans are sure to notice that the same group of idols that was seen at the BC building is now taking the same flight out of the airport, but BC and Dimensions continue to not confirm anything to keep fans talking.

Their album has been recorded so the focus is on choreography this month, as well as fittings and photo shoots for both the teaser photos and the album photo book. The concept of one of the versions of the album will be photos taken by the members of the other members, so each member will be provided a camera to take teaser photos with while shooting that concept version.

Top 30 Reasons You Should Be Considering Power BI Training in Pakistan

BI #1 Power BI Training in Pakistan “In the future, I believe there will be those who were able to adapt the new method early and rapidly and are leading from the front, as well as those who couldn't, shouldn't, or wouldn't and were left in the dust.” For various reasons, there were (and still are) individuals who went early and those who waited. When a company has a big financial commitment in a legacy BI solution, there can be a good reason to hold off. Power BI was primarily a self-service BI solution in 2017, and it wasn't nearly suitable for enterprise use. All of that has changed now. So buckle up – here are my top 30 reasons why you and your firm should adopt Power BI for self-service and/or enterprise BI.

BI #1 Power BI Training in Pakistan

1. It's from Microsoft (the new Microsoft)

Nobody can doubt Microsoft's dominance in the world of business software and IT solutions.

Microsoft hasn't always been good at listening to individual customer complaints, but it has always been good at developing and delivering world-class commercial products. Power BI is a continuation of that tradition, but it is superior for all of the reasons I discuss in this article.

2. Power BI is based on the SSAS platform from the ground up.

Although Power BI is a new tool, it has a long history. Microsoft has been one of the most successful firms in the BI market, with SQL Server Analysis Services Multidimensional and Microsoft Excel, in terms of self-service BI. Excel was the most extensively used self-service BI tool prior to Power BI Training in Pakistan.

3. Power BI is based on SSIS from the ground up.

Power Query (the self-service ETL tool – Extract, Transform, and Load) was designed from the ground up utilizing new technologies yet with a proven track record, just as Vertipaq. However, Microsoft has once again brought in its top SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) team, which has a long and successful track record of successful ET.

4. Power BI can import data from almost any source.

Connectors for the majority of the key data sources have already been constructed and deployed in production. There is also a "catch-all" ODBC database connector, and new (less mainstream) connectors are constantly being developed. In addition, several cloud-based connectors, such as Google Analytics, make it simple for users to connect to cloud content.

5. Power BI is extremely compact and fast.

Vertipaq (the data modelling engine in Power BI and Excel) is a columnar database that is extremely compressed and performant. It creates a highly compressed database that loads completely into memory for fast performance using modern tabular database technology (developed from the ground up). It is not uncommon for a database to compress between 600 and 1200 percent, resulting in a 1 percent reduction in size.

6. Power BI now has a brand-new visualization engine.

There is no luggage to bring with you on this trip - no Silverlight, for example. Microsoft has created a fresh new HTML 5 visualization engine that is simply amazing. Everything (nearly everything) will be sliced and diced, and everything else will be cross-filtered.

7. Open source visualizations are available in Power BI.

Microsoft released early on (thanks to that excellent leadership noted before) that it couldn't solve world peace by itself. Instead of trying to address every visualization challenge for every firm around the world, Microsoft opted to offer its visualization source code so that any competent developer can design their own.

8. Power BI is designed for Excel users, but it is not Excel.

This is the pinnacle of self-service Power BI Training in Pakistan. Who better than the firm that created and owns Excel to develop the user interface for the business user community? While it is reasonably simple to get started for Excel users, it is not Excel. The rigout and structure of SQL Server Analysis Services have been integrated into this product by Microsoft.

9. Power BI is now available in the cloud.

The world is heading to the cloud, whether we like it or not. This solution was designed from the ground up with cloud sharing in mind. It employs all of the latest HTML5 coding approaches to ensure browser compatibility across all platforms. It has industrial-grade security wrapped around its cloud presence, and it is unquestionably safe — Microsoft's image is tarnished.

Unless it's in the cloud, that is.

For whatever reason, not every firm is ready to shift to the cloud. Microsoft has announced Power BI Report Server, an on-premise version of Power BI that allows businesses to store their data on-premise if necessary. Furthermore, the software's desktop version is free for anybody to use and is at least as excellent (if not better) than Excel for performing personal BI analyses.

11. There are mobile apps for Power BI.

One of the advantages of starting from scratch is that you don't have a legacy to uphold. Microsoft has developed apps for both Apple and Android devices (and Windows mobile of course).

12. You can subscribe via email, but don't do so!

I understand that some of you simply want your static report delivered to your inbox every morning. That's fine, Power BI can handle that. Simply navigate to the report tab you wish to see, click "subscribe via email," and when you get to work, a professionally prepared PDF that is excellent for printing will be waiting in your inbox.

13. You may integrate Power BI into your own custom apps.

Another advantage of starting from the bottom up is that you can consider a wide range of concerns when designing the architecture. Microsoft has always intended for Power BI Training in Pakistan to be able to be integrated into custom apps. So, if you want to create your own website and control user access with your own logon credentials, Microsoft is happy with that. It's just them.

14. Power BI is inexpensive to purchase.

It's completely free to try and use for as long as you wish. If you want to use more enterprise capabilities, such as regulated data sharing and automatic refreshes via gateways, you'll have to pay – wait for it – a whopping US$9.99 per month per user. It's enough to send the competition shivering through their boots!

15. Power BI is simple to use (and hence cheap to train users)

A Power BI report can be interacted with by anyone who can click a button. Anyone who wishes to consume content interactively will find it straightforward and simple to understand. The product's minimal training costs make the total cost of ownership quite appealing. And that's before the product is ever utilized to assist users in making decisions.

16. Power users can learn how to use Power BI's modelling engine.

With the Vertipaq engine, Power BI is also enabling self-service BI for a new breed of "citizen developers" from the business community. It is no longer the sole responsibility of an MDX coder to create a usable cube. Many businesses will continue to require IT cube developers, and they can now do it more easily.

17. Power users can learn how to use data loading features in Power BI.

Power Query is so simple to use that it embarrasses SSIS experts. I'm not implying that SSIS developers are no longer required. For large-scale enterprise BI initiatives, I believe there will always be a demand for enterprise-grade technology. 

18. Power BI is a self-service BI platform

Power BI Training in Pakistan is self-service BI embodied for the two reasons mentioned above (the Vertipaq engine and Power Query). It's all you'd expect from self-service BI and more. Any proficient Excel user may easily learn and apply these tools, allowing them to become partially self-sufficient in their analytics and reporting needs.

19. Except when it's not self-service BI

However, just because Power BI is a powerful self-service BI tool doesn't imply it can't also be a powerful enterprise BI tool — in fact, it can do both. Power BI is both a powerful enterprise tool and a self-service solution. Also, don't overlook the importance of ad hoc and enterprise analysis capabilities.

20. Power BI provides dashboards for consolidation.

Power BI is a data source aggregator, among other things. It makes no difference where your data comes from or how/if it connects with other data that matters to you. You can add data in Power BI and pin your visualizations to a dashboard/cockpit where you can view everything you care about and nothing you don't. 

21. Power BI improves on a daily basis - literally!

The Power BI service is updated on a regular basis. Improvements are released into the cloud service as they are made. Microsoft also has to make upgrades to the mobile apps and Power BI Desktop at the same time. These products are released on a monthly basis rather than on a daily basis, but the speed is still tremendous. 

22. Power BI has a large user base.

At the time of writing, Power BI was less than two years old (it is now six years old), and there are millions of users in the community who ask questions and help out other like-minded people. There are hundreds of user groups in major cities throughout the world, and there are displays illustrating how individuals are already utilizing Power BI. Specifically

23. What's significant is decided by the Power BI community.

Isn't it true that Microsoft has evolved? Rather than producing simply what Microsoft feels we need, the company is asking the community what new features they want the most. Anyone can sign up and submit and/or vote on new product improvement suggestions.

24. Power BI features a query engine that understands plain language.

This may appear to be a gimmick, but believe me when I say it is quite cool and effective. You may ask well-designed Power BI Training in Pakistan data model natural language questions like "what were my sales yesterday by state?" or "how are bike sales trending compared to last year?" Power BI will do its best to provide the answer to you as a table, chart, or whatever else you like.

25. Power BI provides automatic analysis with immediate insights.

When you load your Power BI reports to PowerBI.com, a rapid insights tool will trawl through them and analyze the data for quick insights. Quick Insights produced about 50 fascinating pieces of information about the data in my report when I ran it on the Adventure Works demo database.

26. Power BI works in tandem with Excel (no need for export)

Power BI has two major benefits over the competition in this area. To begin, you don't need to export to Excel; simply choose "Analyze in Excel," and Power BI and Excel communicate as if they were twins separated by an umbilical cord (this is literally true in fact). Second, Power BI's appearance and feel is so similar to Excel that it's hard to tell them apart.

27. Power BI works in tandem with PowerPoint.

The truth is that most organizations rely on PowerPoint to communicate stories, thus many people want Power BI Training in Pakistan and PowerPoint to work together. OK, today's PowerPoint integration is quite limited (you can simply export reports to slides), but it works and will only improve. There is already a third-party product available that allows you to email.

28. R and Python are integrated into Power BI.

Third-party tools have been around for a long time, most notably DAX Studio and Tabular Editor, but these are just two of the most well-known; there are many more. Microsoft (the new Microsoft) made the deliberate choice to "harden" the Power BI backend so that third-party developers could connect directly to Power BI Training in Pakistan and Power BI Desktop in a stable and supported manner.

6: Where do I see myself in 21 years?

One of my dreams in life is to marry the heir to a prestigious winery out in wine country. I have a vision of myself at 39, waking up at 10 AM on a tuesday and standing on my private balcony in my state-of-the-art spanish stucco villa. i am drinking a chardonnay despite the early hour whilst i observe my grape empire in my silk negligee. the only event planned for the day is a portrait sitting for my rottweilers (4 of them), for which i have arranged spaces in the family’s private art gallery. i am aging well despite the harsh california sun and my partner and i have a trip to tuscany planned for the fall. it’s a charmed life and i never tire of eating grapes

It’s a complicated topic and of course we will likely never know for sure but the short answer is yes. in my opinion though, what ghosts are is the important question: are they really the dead coming back to haunt the earth? are they just manifestations of energy that the mind interprets into recognizable shapes? hallucinations? or is it wish fulfillment and the reduction of tensions on a heavy conscience? our brains are capable of powerful things, but it begs the question as to whether if a human desperately wants something to be true does the human mind have the power to make it true? c. s. lewis mentioned once that he never understood the ghost debate since, given that ghosts are real, they have no real power over us or anything interesting to say. but i believe that just goes to show how the mystery is far often more important than the solution.

I’m not usually a “gamer” but every year without fail someone introduces me to a game exactly at finals time and I get hooked and it ruins my gpa and study habits. This year it’s Stardew Valley, last year it was Dream Daddy and the year before that it was undertale and I blame Jojo for absolutely all of it bc they are usually the instigator. Anyway, every year I joke with myself about what game will derail my grades this year

He was such a good boy!!! And so friendly with strangers!! He was very well groomed and just wanted some love, and whenever we stopped petting him he would jump up onto our legs and leave little wet paw prints everywhere, I wanted to kidnap him

My favorite has always been haunted mansion, except for the halloween season when it’s nightmare before christmas and then it’s thunder mountain. I just love the outside atmosphere of the house bc I’m a slut for that southern gothic architecture style. Worst is splash mountain because there’s no seatbelt and LOGICALLY i know I don’t need one but it doesn’t stop me from having a panic attack every time I get on and we go up the big hill as I worry about being flung from the toboggan across the park

25: Least favorite restaurant within 10 mile radius of my house

I live over by Porto’s so I am #blessed to be surrounded by some really dope food. However there is a hipster place a couple of blocks over in Toluca Lake that only serves bizarre food like fried chicken in maple syrup with waffle fries and it’s surprisingly bland, so the lack of taste combines with how expensive it is probably makes it the worst (it’s also forgettable bc I can’t even remember its name)

8. Ms. Snowden - I’ve never had her either but I’ve heard enough about her between Burroughs and Luther to know that this woman is kind of scary, intimidating and uptight, all things I personally do not desire in a parent. 2/10

7. Mr. Hatch - I love Scott Hatch but he is a tremendous mess of a man. Judging by his wife’s instagram photos his idea of parenting is taking naps while cuddling his children and letting his wife do the rest of the hard work. Plus he seems like the type to be too wrapped up in his own melodrama and too busy hangin out with his best friend Edward Frankenbush playing Xbox to pay much attention to his kids. However, he did skip the first day of school to take his daughter to kindergarten so he gets points for that. 4/10

6. Mr. Lee - Mr. Lee is a very respectable guy who seems like he does a very good job providing for his family. He’s ranked as middle of the road because he’s a naturally private person so I can’t speak to his parenting tactics or personality much, however the few stories he shared about his daughter were very cute and he does the typical teacher/parent things like making her his screensaver on his computer. Overall, a very quality dad and man, 6.5/10

5. Mr. Fitz - Kyle Fitzgerald is similarly a mess of a man, but the difference between him and Scott Hatch is that he seems to make an investment in his kid. He always talks about current events in terms of what idiocy his poor daughter will have to put up with which shows his devotion to her well-being and survival in a confusing world. Also he brought her in to go swimming once while I was working at Verdugo and I got to see them having a great time on the splash pad and it warmed my heart. Great dad 7/10

4. Mr. Piper - Richard Piper is such a good father but in a detached way. He loves talking about his son and wife just as much as he loves talking about planes. The real kicker? When he talks about taking his son ON planes and geeking out over history together. He also asked all of his classes for people looking for tutoring work when his son was struggling in math which is so cute. Good guy Rick gets an 8/10.

2. (tie) Mr. Frankenbush and Ms. Hacker - Ed and Jan are both beautiful people. I know Ms. Hacker is #divisive but I personally am a big fan and would die to have her guidance in my daily life. She’s always interested in what’s going on in people’s lives and sure she’s definitely chaotic but it’s a loving chaos that’s only looking to help other people. I’ve not had the pleasure of having Mr. Frankenbush but he always is hanging out with his son Joey and they love coming to the Burroughs pool and playing water polo together; they spend a lot of time together since his wife works so much and they have such a buddy friendship. Both of these lovely people are super devoted and invested in the youth and would make great parents. 9/10

1. Mr. Clark - A god. We don’t deserve this man and I can’t sing his praises enough. Were were all lucky enough to be Greg’s children I don’t think evil would exist in the world. 11/10

Hands down Tale of Two Cities since it’s the only one I’ve never finished. Dickens just doesn’t do it for me I guess plus I get really tired of the one dimensional characters and how much he romanticizes Lucy

When Richard Nixon went to Soviet Russia as Eisenhower’s VP during the cold war his secret service agents detected higher than usual amounts of radiation coming from Nixon’s hotel room, so they started talking loudly about it bc they knew the Soviets had planted buds and were listening. Within like an hour the radiation had vanished and they never heard anything about it again so man Soviet’s ain’t sly

30: Rank of all the AP classes i took in order of entertainment value

9) AP Bio: I liked bio but the class wasn’t very entertaining. There’s not a lot of humor in bacteria and cells, and Mr. Van Loo is much more of a calming than a humorous and chaotic presence, so overall it takes the hit as the least entertaining class.

8) AP Stats: Math is similarly not very entertaining, but Mrs. Hollingshed’s erratic personality gives it the edge over Bio. Definitely more humorous than expected of a math class.

7) AP Econ: I bombed econ and business/money isn’t very entertaining but Jan Hacker made it so thanks to her chaos (love her though).

6) AP Euro: European history is incredibly iconic because, spoiler alert, Europeans are idiots and historically speaking everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. I just wish I remember it since I think idiot sophomore Lily slept through most of the class so needless to say I didn’t soak up much of the entertainment value. If it were up to me I’d take it over again and maybe stay awake this time.

5) AP Lit: Lit was just as much challenging and intimidating as it was entertaining, so it balances out. Mrs. Caluya is notably iconic and the books we read were all pretty interesting so it gets a high vote from me.

3) (tie) Gov/APUSH: History is always entertaining in my eyes since people do stupid things out of pettiness. These two tie for different reasons: Mr. Piper is a great teacher and that mock trial we did for the industrial age was great, but the subject was also extremely entertaining overall. I loved reading about how John Adams made making fun of him illegal. Gov was mostly just entertaining because of Mr. Hatch and how salty his is about the government. His sarcastic comments about how corrupt everything is gave life to an otherwise pretty lifeless subject.

2) AP Lang: aka the class with no curriculum, or the Kuglen Hour. I love Mr. Kuglen so much and he is responsible for 99% of the amusement in the class. I somehow learned how to be a better writer by listening to him complain about Trump and everything else under the sun for an hour every day so it was well worth it. Also who doesn’t like a class where you read Dave Sedaris for homework?

1) AP Psych: Without question, this is the epitome of entertainment. Psychology is just a mishmash of people trying to figure out why humans are as stupid as we are and why we do dumb things. Add in all the iconic psychologists and history and a class led by salty Mr. Hatch and you have a recipe for an entertaining year.

Mr. Peebles: A quirky man who I would have loved were I any good at math whatsoever

Mr. Arakelian: Band kids hate him but the stories I hear are so frickin iconic that I wish I could be an honorary band kid for a day and see the horror firsthand. If you have Arakelian stories please send them my way I’d love to hear about your pain

Mr. Frankenbush: A sad boi who everyone should get to experience and I regret never having.

Dr. Madooglu: He was so kind to me after the failed anti-trump lunchtime protest last year and he didn’t even know me. I wish I could’ve experienced him as a teacher.

This is one of my favorite shows so these are my recommendations:

1. 3 Horrifying Cases of Ghosts and Demons - one of the very first and best episodes; a 45-minute special where the Boys investigate the Winchester house in San Francisco, the Island of the Dolls in Mexico, and the Sallie House in Kansas

2. The Strange Disappearance of D. B. Cooper - A man going by the name of Dan Cooper hijacked a plane, demanded money and passage to Mexico, and then at some point jumped out of the plane and was never seen again. To this day no one knows his identity or his fate despite some of the ransom money turning up in a river somewhere.

3. The Haunted Halls of Waverly Hills Hospital - Ryan and Shane explore an abandoned asylum in Pennsylvania and some creepy stuff ensues. One of the best supernatural episodes

4. The Thrilling Gardner Museum Heist - An almost hilarious story (with reenactments!) about a seriously inept security guard and the loss of some of the world’s most beloved paintings. This was one of the first episodes after they started making money and the production quality is off the charts 

5. The Scandalous Murder of William Desmond Taylor - Another excellent reenactment story about one of Hollywood’s first and biggest scandals, the suspicious murder of a leading film producer.

6. The Enigmatic Death of the Isdal Woman - A woman’s body was found suspiciously burned in the European wilderness and no one knows who she is or how exactly she was killed. Watch if you like espionage!

7. The Strange Killing of Ken Rex McElroy - An entire town seemingly rose up to murder a douchey, violent pedophile. One of the only episodes that’s actually happy?

37: 6 Things I would Have Changed About High School

1. Definitely would have joined yearbook as soon as I could

2. Wouldn’t have forced myself to swim for all 4 years; if the passion’s gone then you shouldn’t force it. It’s just a sign that you need to move on to better things

3. I would’ve taken more AP’s and maybe tried another stem ap class. I’ve always been self-conscious about how bad I am at math, but I’ve gotten a little better over the years and instead of being too afraid to challenge myself I would’ve liked to see how I could do and prove myself.

4. Worrying less about grades!! I killed myself over my grades for like three years and then I just kind of let myself go. I would have let myself have who knows how many more hours of sleep and taken the L on a couple of assignments; I’m still learning that my health is more important than perfection.

5. Meeting the right people! I wouldn’t have restricted myself to a few friends and would have branched out more by joinng stuff like JSA. It sucks meeting the right people your senior year and realizing that I was hanging out with the wrong people this whole time.

6. Spanish instead of French.

I have a really strong internal clock so when I don’t think about it too hard and guess intuitively I can usually predict how much time has passed/what time it is without looking at a clock. It’s really only useful for estimating how much time I wasted standing in the shower staring at the wall

Monday is Veteran’s Day, and sports entities are lining up their tributes. For starters, San Antonio-based insurer USAA is supporting ESPN’s annual veterans initiative which this year commemorates the 100th anniversary of the holiday. The insurance company’s activation will be highlighted by athletes, coaches, and celebrities issuing “shout-outs” to members of the military during SportsCenter and tributes on other ESPN platforms. Running November 7-11, ESPN’s America’s Heroes: A Salute to Our Veterans fare began with an hour-long SportsCenter special from Fort Campbell Military Base in Kentucky on November 7 on ESPN2. First Take aired live from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona the following day. In addition, the annual Armed Forces Classic was played from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska that night. And anyone watching football, basketball, and hockey over the weekend couldn’t help but notice the platoons of paratroopers, scoreboard salutes, and abundance of camouflage on all sidelines. Putting aside anything that divides us in sport and elsewhere, on Monday, all Americans should pause and say “thank you for your service” at some point during the day.

Sports investor Bruin Sports Capital received $600 million more to spend. According to the New York Times, Bruin Sports Capital is a sports investment and management company that invests in the technologies of media, marketing, and data surrounding sports. After raising $600 million from two even larger investors – CVC Capital Partners and the Jordan Company – Bruin Sports will be able to expand its portfolio of investments, which already include data analytics, media and streaming companies, and a fledgling drone-racing league. Currently, Bruin, led by Sport Business Handbook contributor George Pyne, has nearly $1 billion invested, including significant stakes in six companies across the modern sports landscape, from sports media start-ups such as The Athletic to a live-event provider selling high-end trips to events like the Super Bowl and the NFL draft. Overall, Bruin Sports Capital’s guiding philosophy is that people under 40 watch and consume sports and media in radically different ways from their parents – and this is likely how the strategic company will invest its newly-acquired $600 million: toward attracting future generations of sports and tech fans.

College basketball is underway, and we may soon see an end to the sport’s infamous “one and done” scenario. The "one-and-done" era began in 2006 when the NBA implemented a controversial age eligibility rule. And all signs point to that rule being changed back prior to the 2022 draft, restoring the legal right of 18-year-olds to declare out of high school. As Axios noted, “in other words, the sport you've come to know over the past decade-plus — the landscape you've grown so familiar with — might soon collapse into oblivion. Enjoy it while it lasts.” Axios also noted that it's been 23 years since a national basketball champion emerged west of Lawrence, Kansas, and that “the Eastern Time Zone has produced 21 of the past 22 national titles! Will the drought continue?” New college hoops coaches to watch this season include former NBA coaches Juwan Howard (Michigan), Jerry Stackhouse (Vanderbilt), and Fred Hoiberg (Nebraska); while Mick Cronin (Cincinnati to UCLA), Eric Musselman (Nevada to Arkansas), Buzz Williams (Virginia Tech to Texas A&M), and made lateral moves.

While the majority of America's top high school basketball talent chose to spend the year in college where they will earn $0 in wages, LaMelo Ball and R.J. Hampton chose to spend the year in Australia's National Basketball League, where they will earn $68,400. Ball was unlikely to be NCAA eligible anyway after playing professionally in Lithuania, but Hampton had full eligibility at an American college. Instead, he chose the path he thought would best prepare him for the NBA. Hampton's decision embodies the modern challenge facing college basketball, but fears over this becoming the new normal are exaggerated. After all, thanks to a new collective bargaining agreement on the horizon, the "one-and-done" era will likely end soon. And when it does, these alternative paths will be moot. We've seen international prospects make noise before, but we've never seen two young Americans — both active on social media with big followings: Ball has five million Instagram followers while RJ has 430,000 – playing  overseas while their former classmates play on campuses. Should be a fun storyline to follow this college basketball season and into next year’s NBA Draft.

IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have a new owner. History was made last week for IndyCar, as the Board of Directors of Hulman & Company entered into an agreement to be acquired by Penske Corporation, selling principal operating assets, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), the NTT IndyCar Series, and IMS Productions to the corporation. This ended a legacy with the Hulman family and the racing series, as IMS was purchased by Tony Hulman and Hulman & Company in 1945, although the family will have an opportunity from Penske to remain involved with both the series and the speedway, according to ESPN. Said Tony George, Chairman of Hulman & Company, “The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been the centerpiece and the cathedral of motorsports since 1909 and the Hulman-George family has proudly served as the steward of this great institution for more than 70 years. Now, we are honored to pass the torch to Roger Penske and Penske Corporation.” Penske is well respected within motorsports, and the deal will no doubt benefit all IndyCar stakeholders, from IMS itself to sponsors like Group1001, which backs young IndyCar driver Zach Veach. 

As “Ford v Ferrari” prepares to open nationwide, with Oscar in its sights, the Raiders have announced Desert Ford Dealers Las Vegas as founding partner of their new Allegiant Stadium. The tie-up also sees Ford, which has five dealerships across Las Vegas, named as the official vehicle of the Raiders. The deal gives Ford a year-round presence throughout Allegiant Stadium including pre-game tailgate activations and naming rights on the north gate entry. Construction on the $1.8 billion stadium is due for completion July 21. Said Raiders president Marc Badain, “We are excited to add another world-wide brand to the Raider family and for the annual activation and tailgating experiences this partnership will provide to our fans.” Set to open this Friday, “Ford v Ferrari” focuses on the relationship between visionary car designer Carroll Shelby (played by Matt Damon) and British driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) as they worked to develop the Ford GT-40 car that swept the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. In case you’re wondering, the original cars sold and licensed by Ford in the 1960s have great value. A 1965 GT-40 roadster prototype was sold in August at a Monterey, CA auction for $7.65 million.

The ATP tested wearable technology for the first time during its just-completed Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan. The Association of Tennis Professionals says the technology will allow players and coaches at the annual 21-and-under men’s tennis tournament to quantify the demands of the competition, practice load management, and make performance decisions based on objective data. The wearable devices will have a GPS receiver and sensors that measure velocity and direction, acceleration and force, rotation, and body orientation. The technology will also measure a player’s heart rate. The data generated from the device will only be available to each player and those that they choose to give access to. It will be displayed in the form of maps showing player movements and actions, while players and coaches will also get post-match and post-practice reports. They will also be able to synchronize the data with match footage.  Wearable technology is the latest innovation to be rolled out at the Next Gen Finals, which also feature shorter sets to four, electronic line calling through Hawk-Eye Live, a 25-second shot clock, in-match player coaching via headsets, and video review. Next up for the ATP: the season finale at London’s O2.

As MLS once again crowned the Seattle Sounders as their champion, the average value of an MLS franchise has climbed 30% from $240 million to $313 million, according to Forbes. The year-on-year growth outpaces the rising team values in the NBA, which were up 13%, as well as the 11% increase in the NFL, an 8% rise in MLB, and a 6% climb in the NHL. Atlanta United remains the most valuable MLS franchise for the second straight year at $500 million, up from $330 million in last year’s rankings. The club’s revenue soared from $47 million to $78 million, resulting in an operating income of $7 million. Atlanta United are closely followed by the L.A. Galaxy ($480 million), with LAFC ($475 million), MLS Cup Champion Seattle Sounders ($405 million), and Toronto FC ($395 million) rounding off the top five. Despite the increase in team values, Forbes estimates that just seven of the league’s 24 teams turned a profit last season, with Toronto FC recording the biggest loss of $19 million. However, that has not stemmed the demand from investors looking to own an MLS franchise, even though expansion fees have soared to $200 million.

We’re past the halfway point of the 2019-2020 NFL season, and FOX expects Super Bowl LIV ad pricing to set record. FOX said it expects to get the highest prices ever for its commercials for this season's Super Bowl, set to take place in Miami on February 2, 2020. Speaking on FOX’s earnings conference call with analysts last Wednesday, FOX CEO Lachlan Murdoch said that “we’re confident pricing will certainly be the highest cost per 30 second spot of any Super Bowl.” Prices for Super Bowl spots have been well in excess of $5 million in recent years. Categories that are already spending money with FOX for the big game include the companies engaged in streaming wars (think Netflix, Amazon, Hulu), tech companies, pharmaceutical marketers, and financial services companies led by insurance companies such as GEICO, Progressive, and State Farm. Back in May, FOX announced that they were cutting one commercial break from each Super Bowl quarter in an attempt to combat criticism about the volume of breaks in the game. Of course, this also makes Super Bowl ad inventory scarcer – and more expensive.

New research from video platform Imagen suggests a generational shift is happening among sports fans across the major U.S. pro leagues. Millennial and Gen Z fans are showing a desire to interact with sports content beyond live games, and a strong preference for more personalized engagement with content. Four times as many millennial and Gen Z fans watch more than three hours of non-game sports content each week compared to Baby Boomers, 78% of fans enhance their live experience with non-game content by dual screening while watching a live game, and 39% of millennials are willing to pay for exclusive online sports content. What’s the takeaway for the TV industry? “The study we conducted surfaced a number of interesting insights for content owners and rights-holders across the sports media landscape,” Ryan Rolf, Imagen CRO, told Cynopsis. “Game broadcasters should do more to embrace second screening through official companion apps and social streams or otherwise risk fans consuming content in-game via competing platforms.” The biggest takeaway? Influencers should be embraced for their authenticity and implemented into programming that breaks down the traditional wall between teams and their fans, rather than teams holding them at bay.

In similar sports engagement news, a new study from Telemundo Deportes was welcome news for brands looking to engage with Hispanic fans. Telemundo Deportes, in partnership with Turnkey Intelligence-MarketCast, reports that Hispanic fans show 15% higher propensity to support sponsors on television and elsewhere than non-Hispanics, “by trying, buying, or recommending a product or service,” according to the study. Additionally, 57% of Hispanic sports fans who consume Spanish-language media would try, buy, or recommend a product or service — a 22% increase over non-Hispanics. Among the report’s other highlights, more than three-quarters of Spanish-language media consumers consider the FIFA Men’s World Cup a “can’t miss event.” 81% of Hispanic sports fans watch sports on television, predominantly at home, and were somewhat less likely than non-Hispanic fans to follow sports on other media platforms such as streaming services, social media, and online news sites. It’s never too early to prepare for the World Cup. Even though the 2022 event in Qatar is later than normal in the calendar due to brutal summer heat in that country – it kicks off in almost three years to the day – brand marketers should take note of this timely study.

As a handful of golf’s global stars prepare for the big 5-0, PGA Tour Champions announced the 2020 tournament schedule, featuring 27 events and culminating with the fifth annual Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs. In 2020, the Tour will hold tournaments in four foreign countries and 18 states, with total prize money of nearly $59 million. The 2020 season will mark the first year of PGA Tour Champions eligibility for a number of the game’s biggest names. World Golf Hall of Fame member Ernie Els celebrated his 50th birthday on October 17, while 17-time PGA Tour winner and 2010 FedEx Cup Champion Jim Furyk, 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir, 2011 Players Champion K.J. Choi, and World Golf Hall of Fame member Phil Mickelson will all turn 50 in the next 12 months. Mickelson, perhaps in a nod to his newly svelte frame – he claims he has lost more than 15 pounds – is certainly not slowing down in his role as a pitchman. Last week, he signed a reported equity deal with Heineken to promote its Amstel Light brand. 

Sinclair Broadcast Group has recorded a 47% increase in total yearly revenues to $1.125 billion, for which the majority of growth is attributed to its sports portfolio since acquiring 22 RSNs from Disney. Chris Ripley, Sinclair’s CEO, has revealed to investors that 75% of the company’s income is created through its sports and news programming, and is now “weighed heavily toward sports.” Compared to financial statements at the end of September 2018, Sinclair’s overall revenue has grown from $766 million. Although advertising and distribution revenues generated by Sinclair’s news content ($651 million) still account for the majority of the company’s income, Sinclair’s sports segment accounted for more than 98% ($352 million) of its revenue growth in the 12 months since. Ripley has also confirmed that the group is planning to increase its ownership of the 24/7 multi-platform Stadium sports network. Stadium was formed in May 2017 in a joint venture with Sinclair’s former American Sports Network (ASN) division and two U.S. TV streaming services, Campus Insiders and 120 Sports. Sinclair paid more than $14 billion to secure all 22 former FOX networks from Disney. 

The NBA altered its bylaws prior to the start of the 2019-2020 season to allow teams to sell sponsorship packages outside of the U.S. and Canada for the first time. League rules previously prevented teams from participating in any ad campaign or sponsorship event outside of their home market. However, NBA chief innovation officer Amy Brooks told JohnWallStreet that the companies currently participating in the league’s jersey patch program – two-thirds of which have an international presence – indicated that the time was right “to grow [the NBA] brand and our partners’ brands globally.” Loosening bylaws surrounding international marketing rights should help the league grow revenues and connect with fans in other regions. The Washington Wizards were the first NBA franchise to take advantage of the rule change, signing an agreement with Japanese tech conglomerate NEC. The Wizards made Rui Hachimura the first Japanese player ever selected in the first round of the NBA Draft in 2019.

Airbnb is set to announce a global sponsorship with the International Olympic Committee running through the Los Angeles 2028 Games, according to SportsBusiness Journal. The deal would represent a significant shift in the home-sharing platform's sports marketing strategy as Airbnb prepares for its IPO in 2020. According to SBJ, the deal would focus on Airbnb’s “experiences” strand, which allows hosts to offer access to their hobbies, skills, or expertise as part of offering out their homes for rent. The arrangement is not intended to infringe on the hotel and hospitality business that Olympic organizers require to stage the Olympics. Recent partners joining the IOC’s global TOP program have made significant investments, with a joint Mengniu Dairy and Coca-Cola deal back in June being valued at $3 billion over 11 years. Currently, 13 companies comprise the TOP program, getting category-exclusive rights to every Games, the IOC, and national Olympic committees.

The New York Knicks and New Jersey Devils broadcasts will soon feature FanDuel betting. According to Bloomberg, FanDuel will become an official sports gaming partner for broadcasts of the NBA’s Knicks, as well as the exclusive sports gambling partner for broadcasts of the NHL’s Devils. Also, New York Rangers hockey telecasts will include FanDuel commercials, but not betting-related content. Devils telecasts will have updated betting odds in a scrolling sidebar during each intermission. The partnership also will include a mix of in-game and halftime spots, branded content, and commercials. Prior to the Knicks halftime show, the network recently began showing a five-minute segment called “Inside the Lines,” devoting that time to look at the NBA betting landscape. A similar one-minute NHL-focused show will air leading into every Devils pregame show. Sports betting companies increasingly are signing deals with pro sports teams and media entities in places where betting on games is legal, and more teams will sign deals with betting partners as state by state legislation continues to relax on sports betting.

Privacy-focused messaging app Signal is making waves in the NBA, NFL, and NCAA. Tampering issues loom over professional sports and a widespread federal investigation still lingers over the NCAA landscape, meaning that the desire for privacy, encryption, and even disappearing messages has increased. For public schools in college sports, the app has emerged as an outlet to avoid jeopardy under Freedom of Information Act requests and to circumvent NCAA amateurism rules. In pro sports, Signal is used to combat the uptick in tampering enforcement. According to Yahoo! Sports, all the messages, photos, and documents passed back and forth are heavily encrypted on Signal. In the NBA and NFL, Signal spans every level from players to executives. In the wake of an NBA free agency period in which news of deals was broken prior to the formal start of the free agency round, NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced stricter enforcement of rules for tampering and salary-cap circumvention. While the Signal app was originally created for use in politics, the sports world has been using its security features to avoid legal repercussions for phone conversations or texts or, simply, an escape from stardom.

Spalding hosts holiday shopping event on social media. According to Mobile Marketer, basketball maker Spalding will host a two-hour shopping event on social media to give fans a chance to buy limited-edition gear. The "Spalding.com Holiday Slam" will be headlined by NBA players Damian Lillard and DeMar DeRozan on November 24. Spalding will sell 30 items, including new basketballs and hoops, in a collaboration that also will include former L.A. Lakers star Kobe Bryant, the NBA, and global travel brand Sprayground. The shopping event will be hosted at a special microsite and on Spalding's @spaldingball account on Instagram and @Spalding handle on Twitter. Some of the proceeds from the shopping event will be donated to the NBPA Foundation and LA84 Foundation's joint Court Refurbishment Program that provides places for kids to play basketball in Southern California. By following a model of well-known exclusivity similar to an online sneaker drop, it’s likely that the Spalding merchandise will sell out quickly and may influence future marketing tactics in other sports.

NBA TV linear network goes direct to consumer on digital platform. According to SportsPro, the channel includes more than 100 exclusive live NBA games per season and has been added to the NBA’s official website and app, alongside on-demand video content, and will enable viewers to access NBATV content using mobile and connected devices. The offer is available for $6.99 per month or $59.99 annually, and will also continue to authenticate fans who get NBA TV via a pay-TV operator. The move comes after NBA Digital recently debuted a new NBA TV franchise called Center Court, which features a series of 20 live 2019-2020 NBA games with enhanced viewing options. They include new camera angles with footage captured exclusively on smartphones, live on-screen group chats with celebrity influencers, in-depth analytics and statistical graphics, and social media integration. The NBA has also announced an expansion of its existing media partnerships in the Philippines to distribute NBA League Pass, amidst turbulence in China that has put that country and the league at an impasse.

Total advertising on connected TV devices and platforms will grow 37.6% in 2019 to hit $6.94 billion, forecasts eMarketer – and surpass $10 billion by 2021. “When looking at ad revenues, YouTube, Hulu and Roku are the leaders in this market,” eMarketer lead analyst Eric Haggstrom shared with Cynopsis. “Users of these platforms are likely either cord-cutters or cord-shavers. That means some TV ad buyers are willing to pay a premium to reach users who are difficult to reach via traditional TV ads. These platforms are also bulking up their targeting, programmatic and attribution capabilities in order to attract buyers from the digital world.” While these numbers comprise all programming, including sports, major recent deals that pro sports leagues have done with the likes of Amazon and YouTube prove that they understand where the content consuming world is going and are already headed in that direction.

Fútbol Más Foundation and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) look to integrate Venezuelan migrants to Peru. According to sportanddev, Fútbol Más Foundation started a project in partnership with the IOM, which seeks to promote the well-being and integration of youth between 6 and 18 years old through socio-sportive activities. 150 boys, girls, and teens are part of the project “El Balón No Tiene Banderas” (The Ball Has No Flags). Families from both nationalities and members of the management team participated to kick-start the socio-sportive workshops and meetings, leader courses, and the intercultural festival that will benefit the communities through the commitment to a protected and inclusive childhood all through the power of soccer as a unifier. Boston Marathon Charity eclipses $100 million in donations for cancer over its 20 years. According to Tucson.com, Boston Marathon runners participating on behalf of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute since 1990 have surpassed the $100 million fundraising mark. The research center says more than $500,000 has already been raised by runners in next year's race, putting it over the threshold. Dana-Farber was one of the first charities allowed to use the Boston Marathon as a fundraiser. More than 500 runners are expected to take part in the 2020 race as part of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge. They are hoping to raise $6.25 million. 100% of the money raised from the team's Boston Marathon runners supports promising cancer research in its earliest stages. The Boston Marathon is the pinnacle of marathon and media coverage and the race will make positive headlines as multiple charities will be highlighted on the day of the event next year, April 20, 2020.

Baltimore Orioles’ Chris Davis donates $3 million to the University of Maryland Children's Hospital. According to MLB, Chris and Jill Davis donated $3 million to the UMD Children’s Hospital at the University of Maryland Medical Center, which made their donation the largest ever received by the hospital from a Baltimore sports figure. Hospital officials said the funds would be allocated for the expansion of a state-of-the-art pediatric hybrid catheterization and operation room used to fight congenital heart disease. The Davises have long been active with the hospital, where their second daughter, Evie, was diagnosed with a ventricular septal defect in January, 2018 and spent nearly a year under doctors’ watchful eyes before being medically cleared near her first birthday. Davis is a three-time nominee for MLB’s prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, and his family hosted a charity home run derby called “Crush’s Homers for Hearts” at Oriole Park at Camden Yards during each of the last three summers. To date, the event has raised more than $250,000 for UMCH Children’s Heart Program. While Davis’ on-field struggles have now totaled four straight seasons of subpar batting averages and strikeout numbers, his off-field contributions continue to make him a welcome athlete in Baltimore.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will honor the military with a Veterans Day Celebration. According to the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins honored military veterans at this past Saturday's game against Chicago at PPG Paints Arena by wearing special black-and-green camouflage jerseys in the pre-game warmup. The jerseys will then be autographed and auctioned online, with proceeds benefiting Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania. Additionally, ten veterans from the Veterans Leadership Program and their guests watched Saturday's game from a party suite, courtesy of the Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, while stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin donated their charity suites to veterans from the Veterans Leadership Program and their families. With Veterans Day taking place on Monday, November 11, the Penguins are making sure to honor those who allow for the freedoms of others to enjoy hockey on a regular basis.

Phillies coach Charlie Manuel will sleep on the street for charity. According to Crossing Broad, Manuel will be sleeping outside on a Philly street along with Larry Bowa and Phillies executives to raise money for the Covenant House “Sleep Out” program, which supports homeless youth. Charlie went on Twitter to explain that his family had 11 kids and that he “grew up poor,” so it’s a cause he can relate to. As of Friday, $1,415 of the $5,000 goal had already been raised. The sleep out will take place on November 21 and is not about pretending to be homeless. It’s an act of solidarity with the 4.2 million young people who experience homelessness each year. It’s a decision that we can’t stay indoors while so many kids remain outside. The funds raised will be donated to Covenant House, a shelter for kids experiencing homelessness and trafficking. Covenant House offers these young people respect and unconditional love, and their continuum of care provides essential services to help kids transition from homelessness to independence. Manuel is raising awareness of homelessness in Philadelphia and speaking from a place of respect, as he too suffered financial struggles in his childhood.

I remember my worst day. I worked at a coffee shop, oftentimes for long hours with usually no breaks. At the time, I was a shift leader. I had little experience with managerial stuff, but knew my way around the other areas, one of the reasons they made me a shift leader. I digress, though (kind of, context after all). At the time, we didn’t have a car, but I don’t recall why. We also didn’t have hot water. Our hot water tank had broken a while ago and I had been taking showers for college on the college campus in the fitness center. It was awful. It had been 8-10 months at the time that we didn’t have hot water. It was frustrating because we had the new water heater but couldn’t get rid of the old one to install the new one. Neither of us were strong enough to pull the old one out.

So, no car, no hot water. I biked to work at 3am to get there by 5 am. I worked a 12 hour shift, no break, no manager on duty (it was Sunday), and I had to figure out price/ad changes on my goddamned own. I had to do things that weren’t part of my job (so, same as usual, jfc). Then I had to bike home. I got about half way, and I remember to this day, that I came really fucking close to just giving up on everything. I broke down crying but somehow I made it home (thanks Ayden). I probably had to be back at work at 5am. I don’t think I ever told anyone, considering it was the middle of summer, so of course I wasn’t in contact with anyone from college, nor was I close enough to anyone to talk to them about it. It’s also not something you broadcast. Even when I was in school, talking to people every day, I didn’t tell them we didn’t have hot water, I didn’t tell them I was showering on campus in the middle of winter when it was too cold to shower at home.

Anyway, 11 months (almost an entire year of not having a hot water tank), we finally got it installed. There have been several instances where we had to turn the water completely off (of course not for 11 months). It got so bad that my parent put a turn-off valve on anything they could, so if the kitchen sink was fucked up, we could turn those faucets off without turning the rest off. We had issues with the toilet seal a while back but we got it fixed within a month. It was hell, lemme tell you (especially with the parent yelling to high hell impressive swears), but we survived. Context I want you to get from this is that I am super fucking sensitive when it comes to the sound of water spraying/leaking against plywood and I am super fucking anxious when it comes to water leaks or anything regarding water leaks when it comes to this place.

SO. Last Thursday, after a shitty day for the parent, they come home and our sewage line is acting up. They try to fix it the same way I did about four hours before. They break the seal on our toilet. We’ve been having issues with backup in the bathroom sink, the shower drain, and the kitchen sink. Not a surprise, I guess, but still a pain the dick. So begins the long fucking week of finding creative ways to get rid of sewage.

They’re so frustrated and tired that they’re at the point “it doesn’t matter.” Of course, I know better. It may not matter today, but it will tomorrow, especially when it comes to our elderly grandmother who has the most inconvenient timing for literally everything. So, I resort to prior experience. I go into problem-solving mode, which works for a day and a half. They still have to deal with some difficult stuff while we try to fix it. Obviously, we’re at the point where this is getting fucking ridiculous to deal with. I realize that I make enough (or could, if I work a certain number of hours a week that I could potentially do) to get us out, so I start looking for an apartment. They get hope that we can get out, so they start looking, too. We’ve lived here for 23+ years, a mobile home that is clearly past its prime and I am able to get rid of it, so we’re looking into that, but it’s not instantaneous, so we’re fixing what we can to live here while we look, right. So, it’s a week long process of effort, money (that could be put into a new apartment), and stress into fixing a problem in the short-term (as long as it lasts a few months, we’ll be fine). As long as we have a working toilet for the next 1-3 months, right?

So, we get the PVC, we get the couplings, we get what we need to fix it. We end up fucking it up, fixing it again, fucking it up, fixing it again. WE FIX IT. 5-6 trips to Home Depot, another 2-3 to a local hardware store. Meanwhile, I’m spending my days off dealing with this. I’ve already been stressed to the point of almost breaking down in front of several supervisors (”do you feel better?” “I hope you feel better than you look.”). I’d had several breakdowns prior to this, based primarily on work. But, yeah, I had the capacity to deal with this, too. It was the first time I asked to leave early from work in the 5 years of working. So, I was looking forward to having A SINGLE FUCKING DAY OFF, right?

Yeah, no. I get not a single day off. I have to say, college was fucking tiring. I worked 20-35 hours on top of college, right? When our manager when out, I was there to cover a lot of her shifts. I didn’t complain because she couldn’t help it. I was able to do it, I guess. It was hard, but it was nothing compared to what I’ve had to do. I stayed up some nights. It wasn’t an issue, I don’t know why. Apparently class wasn’t as difficult as I thought it was? That was a break compared to “real life.”

I have my job now. I have a hard time not sleeping between jobs. I have a hard time not sleeping for 24 hours. I have a hard time having jobs for 18-24 hours straight. Perhaps it’s more physically demanding? I think I’ve reached a new low and I don’t know what to do. I’m so tired, I’m fucking exhausted and I don’t know how to fix it. I don’t think there is a ‘fix.’ Sleep doesn’t help. Even when I get decent sleep, I’m still miserable. In the last 2-3 weeks, I’ve reached an all-time low several times.

I broke down for some reason about 3 weeks ago. I want to blame it on being tired, being exhausted. I talked to someone about stepping down from a position of responsibility, someone I thought I’d disappoint that it turned out I wouldn’t. It was a long day, I guess, a lot of energy drinks, a lot of emotions. I was vulnerable. I had a great breakdown. It was my breaking point, but I had to keep going.

Work kept me responsible. What I mean by that is, I had a shift that I was expected to know what I was doing, then was expected to know what I was doing at the next shift (”just ask Riley, they know all about this account”) on top of being sensory overloaded and having people on top of me and it being warm and the account itself being tedious. It didn’t help, I was supposed to be back there again the next morning. It was just a tiring day all around and to have there be scheduling changes...Anxiety was a thing.

The next day brought a store that I guess was my ‘break.’ I didn’t really have to be responsible for anything, but I didn’t really think of it as such, given that there were 3 people scheduled and it was a travel store. The next store after that (a store I thought I’d get a nap for, that I didn’t) I knew I’d have hella responsibility for, give that I was granted an email about what responsibility I’d have. I broke down during that store and asked to leave early, knowing I had two stores the next day. It was the first time I asked to leave early in my entire career. I cried the entire way home and texted a friend to come see them instead of going home. I wasn’t okay. It wasn’t the worst day I had, but a very close second.

The next morning, these same assholes decided “hm, he left early because he couldn’t handle shit the night before” then put me on to lead a flow the next fucking morning. I legit thought the people saying “yep, you’re flow lead,” were joking because of the night before. I almost cried right then and there. I just wanted to count. Especially when another lead came by and changed the game plan entirely. It was due to my area manager being highly understanding that I stayed. That same day, I had another shift that they put me as flow lead. It was hard to fuck up, but it was still tiring, emotionally draining, considering the morning I had.

Basically since the one day, the day I ran Tops (6-12) I haven’t really had a day off, that RGIS hasn’t decided training was necessary, or that life hasn’t fucked me completely over. I’m fucking exhausted. I have no support system and I’m exhausted.

Best of Both Worlds: 1964 Chrysler 300K

The Chrysler letter car story is well known to the readers of Mopar Muscle. Starting in 1955 with the introduction of the C-300, through to the 300L in 1965, the last of the famed letter cars.

For 1963, the entire Chrysler lineup received extensively restyled exterior sheet metal and on the inside, gone was the electro-luminescent AstroDome instrument cluster, replaced with a much more traditional flat instrument panel. While most Chryslers rode on a 126-inch wheelbase, the two door models of the 300 letter and non-letter cars had a wheelbase that was four inches shorter at 122 inches. The biggest news for Chrysler in 1963 was the introduction of the 5 year/50,000-mile warranty, a move that set Chrysler apart from its competitors.

All the 300J hardtops (the letter “I” was skipped due in part to in that it might be confused with the numeral 1) were equipped the 413-cubic-inch V-8 featuring ram induction, producing 310 horsepower. Top speed was reported to be 142 miles per hour making it one of the fastest production cars in America, in spite of a curb weight exceeding 4,000 pounds. Sales were comparably poor for 1963 with just 400 cars produced as sales of the non-letter 300s continued to grow.

For 1964 the convertible returned to the 300K lineup but the cross-ram 413 became an option, a 300K exclusive not offered on other 1964 Chryslers and the leather interior became an extra-cost option. These moves allowed Chrysler to reduce the base price of the 300K by over $1,000. The results were an eight-fold increase in sale to 3,647 units (3,022 hardtops, 625 convertibles), the largest total in the history of the 300 letter car series.

Michael marks the start of his car enthusiasm in 1971 when he was just four years old, vividly remembering his Dad shopping for a new Chrysler when he planned to trade in the family sedan, a 1964 Newport he bought new, to his mom who was just learning to drive. “I remember a big blue fuselage-bodied Chrysler on the showroom floor with a white vinyl top and interior, fancy wheels and hidden headlamps,” recalls Michael. “Looking back now I’m sure it was a 300 and kept telling my Dad ‘let’s get that one.’ Being ever so practical Dad insisted on another economical sedan and the salesman took us out into the lot and showed us a Burnished Red Metallic Newport. I didn’t like it and told Dad the wheels were ugly – back then the wheel covers were in the trunk until the cars were prepped – and this car was broken because the left front tire was flat. I remember noticing the unusual, dual-pinstripe whitewalls but remained unimpressed. ‘Dad, let’s get the blue one.’ Of course, we came home with the red one.”

For Michael, the 1964 Newport became somewhat of a plaything as he asked. “Hey Dad, if we still have this car when I’m old enough to drive can I have it?” To which his dad replied, laughing, “Sure why not.”

“Little did he know the path he set me on,” says Michael more than four decades later. “As I got older I learned to tinker on that car, changing oil, brakes, ignition points and more. By the time I was sixteen although the car was still around, I came across a big block ’1970 Charger project. Dad wasn’t a car guy and looked at the basket case with the engine in pieces and figured I couldn’t get into any trouble. He knew he was wrong the first time a cop woke him up in the middle of the night and asked if he wanted me locked up and the car impounded or if he wanted to get dressed and come to get me instead. That ended my street racing activities for the summer and I was headed off to college anyway.”

After college, Michael took the Charger off the road with plans to restore it and while he was collecting parts, came across a 1964 Chrysler 300K convertible. I had never seen a 413 cross-ram engine before and he had to have it. He did the best restoration a 23-year-old could back in 1990 and drove that car to every show he could attend. Soon after he replaced his 383 automatic Charger for a legit, numbers-matching 1970 RT/SE four-speed Charger. Once completed, he packed up his cars and headed west figuring Arizona was the place to be as he could drive his cars year-round and they’d never rust again. As the years went by, he didn’t just add a wife and kids, like so many other car nuts, he added and completed projects that included a 1970 Road Runner with a Gen III Hemi, a 1969 Charger 500, and this 1964 300K hardtop.

“I came across this car sitting on a trailer in the swap section of the Spring Fling in Van Nuys, California,” said Michael. “It was a complete, but rough looking, unrestored car. It was pretty devoid of options as far as luxury cars go, even radio and side view mirror delete. The original window sticker was in a box full of paperwork dating back to before the original owner even purchased the car. There were handwritten notes comparing prices from different dealerships and shows he traded in a Renault to order this “bankers hotrod.” He checked off very few options, just leather trim, a Sure-Grip differential, and the ‘300K special package’ which included the dual four-barrel, cross-ram equipped engine. The paper trail on the car spanned nearly 25 years with receipts for warranty work at the dealership, car washes, and even custom tuning at the famous Granatelli Automotive. I struck a deal for it and the seller trailered it to my my place in Phoenix.”

While I’ve driven it to Mopars at the Strip in Vegas and the Spring Fling in California my favorite trip was attending one of the Chrysler 300 Club International’s events which was held in Monterey, California. The show host arranged for an afternoon gathering at Laguna Seca Raceway where they allowed us all to do some exhibition runs around the course. Not going to miss the chance, with the wife and my three kids (the youngest 10 months old and in a car seat) securely fastened we hit the track for a few laps. I’m confident my girls will be able to say they’re likely the only little girls to have experienced the famous corkscrew in the family show car. Not even Disneyland can compete with that.

“I figured that this car was going to be the bookend to my 300K convertible, only with a modern twist,” explains Michael. “Having owned my ram engine ragtop for over 20 years, I know that even when tuned properly, you’ve got to have a feel for how to drive the dual quads. These were built for the open road and they weren’t exactly civil for cruising around town. The decision was made to retain the ram induction but to add EFI for driveability. A manual trans with overdrive would make cruising fun and overcome the 4.10 gear needed to launch this heavy beast. A hydraulic roller cam would maximize power and alleviate the need to regularly remove the intakes to adjust the valves. Yards and yards of Dynamat lined the floors, roof, firewall and doors to keep things quiet so the kiddies in the car seats could nap on long trips. The original KK1 Silver Turquoise paint color was retained as was the black leather interior. I needed to upgrade the wheels as there was no way 14” tires were up to the task of maintaining adhesion with the road considering all the weight and power involved here. I settled on 18-inch Centerline Boulevard wheels custom-ordered with unpolished centers and they were reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s kidney-bean-style wheels. Overall I achieved the look I wanted with the car.”

Michael explains that the original Chrysler 300 letter car series helped to spawn the horsepower races of the 1950s and 1960’s. Not classified as muscle cars (defined as a big engine installed in an intermediate or compact car), the big, bruising Chryslers are muscular cars. “Many are restored to stock as owners feel that protects not only their heritage but value also,” says Michael. “Mine is tastefully modified with subtle improvements that don’t get the purists too upset but make mine a helluva lot more fun to drive.” One of these modifications, the stealth infotainment system concealed behind a movable panel of the dash, is almost as comprehensive as the uConnect package you would find in a contemporary Chrysler 300.

The cross-ram fuel-injection setup is a unique, one-off design. From Imagine Injection in Phoenix, Arizona. It was this unusual EFI set up that caught our eye many years ago when caravanning from Phoenix to Las Vegas for that year’s Mopars at the Strip (when it was still called Mopars at the Strip). Lifting the hood at a gas stop in Wickenburg, Arizona, we saw that the expected carburetors were missing, replaced by a state-of-the-art fuel-injection set up. Michael explained that not only did fuel injection improve driveability, but in conjunction with the overdrive fifth gear, it substantially improved fuel mileage. It’s almost as if it was engineered by Chrysler’s engineers in Highland Park back in the 1960s (remember that Corvette offered fuel injection since 1957).

Over the years Michael has joined many Mopar clubs including the Chrysler 300 Club International, the Chrysler 300 Club Inc., AZLX Modern Mopar Muscle, and the 602 (area code) Mopars. He’s participated in the Silver State Classic Challenge and the Nevada Open Road Challenge

Michael notes that he doesn’t drive the 300K as much as he might like. “I drive my projects a little bit after completing them before parking them and getting involved in my next project. It’s a mixed blessing. I’ve been fortunate to be able to build quite a few Mopars but when I’m into a current build that consumes all my time, I don’t enjoy the finished cars as often as I hoped to. One thing I love is that my family is actively involved in the hobby and I have aspirations that my three daughters will get the car bug as they approach driving age in a few years.”

“I love my vintage Mopars, but as I’ve gotten older, and the cars have gotten older I enjoy them differently than I used to,” say Michael with a smile. “I don’t abuse them like I used to, I have the modern Mopars for that. If I hurt one of the new cars the local dealership delivers the new parts to my shop the next day and I’m well on the way to being back on the road. I had a customer who wrecked his vintage Challenger and although the insurance took care of the bill, the car was down nearly a year for the rebuild. I think that’s got to be a collector’s worst nightmare.”

Concluding our conversation, Michael noted that both the 1964 and 1971 Newports that started it all for him are still in the family. This, as well as the cars he’s built since then, remain in his custody. Unlike many of us, he’s had space and never has been forced to sell any of his Mopar legacy.
