I am a huge fan of the @leevalleytools leather bound ten year garden journal. I'm not always as disciplined as I should be about recording weather patterns and planting dates...but sometimes I am...and when I do so the information is invaluable for reference. 🌳These flexible hoses may not have the ideal life span we'd all like, but for me, who does SO much hand watering…their lightweight collapsible form is worth it. I buy them at #bedbathandbeyond with one of their ubiquitous coupons (I've never seen these hoses on sale). Make sure to get the one with the on/off nozzle at the end. The one without it is notoriously difficult to attach and detach garden guns or hose sprayer attachments. What tips do you have for maximizing the efficiency of your garden hose? Wondering what to do with those #cymbidium orchids you got at @traderjoes or @wholefoods or @samsclub ...but are out of bloom 🌺and just sitting there with scrappy tough foliage, healthy but boring? I had several gallon pots just as I described. So I plopped them in some urns, stabilize them, and place them outside a set of French doors off my kitchen. They will get lots of bright light and fertilizing on this summer vacation, hopefully rewarding me with future blooms. I hope you guys can hear this one… It was very windy today! My friend @herbstead asked for some tips on using pots positioned in the flower 🌺 beds themselves, rather than just placed on the porch or deck. Well, I like to use them to fill some kind of a void in the garden space. It is an effective way to inject missing color🌻evergreen structure 🌳or a focal point 🌲into an area that's heavily planted (with lots of root competition) or at a height not yet filled by an existing planting. So, for example, I can set a huge pot of hydrangeas, or annual color, or a topiary... for temporary or season long interest, into a section of the border that has a gap to fill. Do you have a shady spot that needs an infusion of color? Plop a pot of seasonal color in it for the weekend. Don't have any room to plant all of those gallon shrubs you just bought on sale at Lowe's? Plant them all in a huge weatherproof pot and set it on a stand in the flower bed where what was blooming is now past its prime. Have you pulled out all of your Larkspur and Poppies and now have a bare spot? Put a large pot filled with herbs or cherry tomatoes or hibiscus into the space. Large pots make more of a statement, and won't need to be watered as often; plants are just generally happier in them... just remember, if the pot will be moved later you might not want it to be prohibitively heavy :-). ...speaking of hydrangeas. These blue ones from a client's garden are just scrumptious, but even if they failed to bloom, the dancing coral-pink poppies would carry the show. And even if the poppies didn't come to the garden party...the clipped boxwood would still be ever so attention grabbing...especially against a backdrop of a handsome stone wall. Capped of course with some whimsical but practical bamboo cloches to keep the 🐰 from nibbling. Truly, it takes a village of just the right garden elements and horticultural karma to create vignettes like this, but when it does...it is a thing to behold.
