Remembering Punjab Kesari: A Tribute to Lala Lajpat Rai on His 160th Birth Anniversary
Tumblr media
Introduction
On this auspicious occasion, we offer our heartfelt tribute to Punjab Kesari, Sri Lala Lajpat Rai, on his 160th birth anniversary. A true patriot and visionary, Lala Lajpat Rai's contributions to India's struggle for independence continue to inspire generations. His unwavering commitment to the nation's freedom and economic self-reliance left an indelible mark on India's history.
Early Life and Education
Born on January 28, 1865, in Dhudike, Punjab, Lala Lajpat Rai showed signs of leadership and intellect from an early age. He pursued his education in law and began practicing at the Lahore High Court. However, his passion for social reform and national awakening soon led him to dedicate his life to the cause of India's independence.
Political Career and Activism
Lala Lajpat Rai's political journey was marked by his active involvement in various movements and organizations:
Member of the Indian National Congress
Co-founder of the Punjab National Bank (PNB)
Established the Servants of the People Society
Founder of the Indian Home Rule League of America
His fiery speeches and writings inspired millions of youths to join the freedom struggle. Rai's dedication to the cause earned him the title "Punjab Kesari" (Lion of Punjab).
The Simon Commission Protests
One of the most significant events in Lala Lajpat Rai's life was his leadership during the protests against the Simon Commission in 1928. The commission, appointed by the British government to review India's constitutional reforms, faced widespread opposition due to the absence of Indian representation.
On October 30, 1928, Lala Lajpat Rai led a peaceful protest in Lahore against the Simon Commission. During the demonstration, he was brutally lathi-charged by the police, sustaining severe injuries. He famously declared, "Every blow aimed at me is a nail in the coffin of British imperialism." Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on November 17, 1928, becoming a martyr for India's independence.
Economic Vision and Punjab National Bank
Lala Lajpat Rai's vision extended beyond political independence. He recognized the importance of economic self-reliance for a truly free India. This foresight led to the founding of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in 1894, with the aim of promoting indigenous entrepreneurship and financial independence.
Today, PNB stands as the third-largest public sector bank in India, playing a crucial role in the nation's economic and financial growth. The bank's success is a testament to Lala Lajpat Rai's visionary approach to nation-building.
Legacy and Impact
Lala Lajpat Rai's legacy continues to inspire generations of Indians:
His writings, including "Young India" and "Unhappy India," remain influential
Several educational institutions bear his name, promoting his ideals
The Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Hisar, Haryana, honors his memory
His statue stands tall in front of the Punjab Legislative Assembly in Chandigarh
Dr. Nowhera Shaik, MD & CEO of Heera Group of Companies, pays tribute to this great leader, stating, "Lala Lajpat Rai's sacrifice and vision continue to guide us in our pursuit of economic growth and national progress."
Conclusion
As we commemorate the 160th birth anniversary of Punjab Kesari, Sri Lala Lajpat Rai, we are reminded of the immense sacrifices made by our freedom fighters. His life serves as an inspiration for all Indians to work towards a self-reliant and prosperous nation. Let us honor his memory by upholding the values of patriotism, courage, and economic empowerment that he stood for.

A Visionary Leader’s Legacy
Shashi Ruia, co-founder of the Essar Group and a prominent figure in Indian industry, passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of entrepreneurial success and community upliftment. Announcing his demise, the Ruia family shared their heartfelt tribute: “With profound grief, we inform of the passing of Shri Shashikant Ruia, Patriarch of the Ruia and Essar Family. His humility, warmth, and ability to connect with everyone he met made him a truly exceptional leader.”
Shashi Ruia, alongside his brother Ravi Ruia, co-founded the Essar Group in 1969, transforming it into a diversified conglomerate spanning construction, energy, steel, telecommunications, and more. The family emphasized that his dedication to philanthropy and community upliftment touched countless lives, shaping a legacy that will inspire future generations. The official statement noted, “His extraordinary legacy will remain a guiding light as we honor his vision and uphold the values he cherished and championed.”
From Humble Beginnings to Industrial Prowess
The Essar Group’s journey began modestly in 1969 when the Ruia brothers secured a ₹2.5 crore contract from the Madras Port Trust to construct an outer breakwater. Initially focused on the construction and engineering sector, Essar built vital infrastructure projects, including bridges, dams, and power plants. During the 1980s, the company diversified into the energy sector, acquiring oil and gas assets that would later form the cornerstone of its business.
The 1990s marked further expansion into steel and telecommunications. Essar established steel plants and an oil refinery while becoming a key player in India’s telecom sector, partnering with Hutchison to build the country’s second-largest telecom operator. However, over the years, the company underwent significant transitions. It exited the telecom business, sold its oil refinery to a consortium led by Russia’s Rosneft, and relinquished its steel plants to ArcelorMittal following insolvency proceedings. Despite these challenges, Essar Group remains a respected name in the Indian industry, owing much to Shashi Ruia’s vision and leadership.
A Life of Dedication and Influence
Shashi Ruia devoted his life to the growth of Essar, opting not to pursue opportunities abroad in favor of strengthening the family business. He began his career at a young age, actively participating in meetings, observing operations, and gradually taking on responsibilities. By the age of 17, he was already contributing significantly to the group’s expansion.
Beyond his contributions to Essar, Ruia was actively involved in key national and international organizations. He served on the managing committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and contributed to global initiatives such as The Elders, a group of renowned leaders including Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan, and Jimmy Carter, focused on addressing complex global challenges.
As an industry leader, Ruia’s dedication to fostering innovation and building robust enterprises left an indelible mark on India’s industrial landscape. His legacy will continue to inspire those who aspire to build transformative businesses while prioritizing community welfare.
