How to Burn Your Own CDs - a guide for Windows users

Are you--yes, you!--tired of paying money to stupid shit like spotify for your music? Do you hate the way that the music industry takes almost all the profit that bands make through streaming and leaves them with pennies? Have you ever wanted to fire up that old CD-Radio in the corner of your bedroom, only to be stopped because all you have on CD is Weezer's blue album and a copy of Kidz Bop 16 that you don't remember buying? Well this guide just might be for you!

Materials you'll need:

A computer. Can't do it without this one.

A CD drive. It can be internal or external, but you'll need one either way. You can find them at Office Depot for fairly cheap and I've heard that some Walmarts carry them.

A pack of CD-Rs. CD-Rs, or CD Recordables, come in packs of 20, 50, or 100. A proper 100-pack should cost you no more than $30, so unless there's some special shortage in your area, don't buy from anywhere selling them at a markup. CD blanks are literally 50c a piece.

CD cases. Sold wherever CD-Rs are, but you can also find these at thrift stores pretty easily.

A sharpie or some kind of permanent marker

Software you'll need:

Jdownloader. You can acquire mp3s through Bandcamp if you're dedicated to righteousness, but for everyone else, install jdownloader or some other kind of open-source download program. I will be proceeding as if you have jdownloader available.

Windows media player. This should open automatically when you insert a CD-R into your CD drive.

Fre:ac audio converter. This is only for the occasion that you encounter OPUS or mp4a files that cannot be interpreted by your CD player.

Note: If you're very determined not to download software onto your computer, you can use free youtube downloaders and audio converters, but these are subject to viruses and other issues such as download speed. I will be proceeding as if you have the programs I listed.

The process:

Decide what you want to burn--anything goes, but keep in mind the time limit on your CD-Rs. Most will record 90 minutes or less.

Open jdownloader, switch to the linkgrabber tab, then paste youtube links in any order until you have all the music you want. I'd personally recommend doing it song-by-song instead of a full album stream, because a massive file will require a lot of work to separate back into searchable tracks.

De-select all files except audio on the right-hand side options menu.

Make a folder inside the music folder of your laptop and label it with the name of your mix CD.

In the properties tab of each song on jdownloader, change the destination folder to the folder you've just created.

Hit "start all downloads".

Once finished, open each folder. If everything is an .mp3 or a .wav, skip the next 2 steps.

Open Fre:ac audio converter to convert all audio files that aren't .mp3 or .wav into .mp3 or .wav.

Drop the converted files next to the unconverted files in your folder. If you wish, you can delete the originals to make the folder easier to browse.

Put your blank CD-R into the CD drive. If external, plug in your CD drive first or the tray will refuse to open.

Windows media player will open automatically. On the right-hand side, you will see the tracklist of your CD-R (which should be blank). On the left, you will see the audio that your computer is able to find in the music folder. Put your selected tracks IN ORDER onto the tracklist.

Listen to the beginning and ending of each track to make sure there isn't a significant time gap. This also prevents accidentally burning a youtuber's stupid outro if you missed it before.

When satisfied, hit "start burn".

On an external drive, the CD tray will open upon completion. You can reinsert it to ensure that the burning went smoothly.

Once satisfied, remove the CD from your drive. With your sharpie or permanent marker, write the name of the album on the front, then store safely inside a CD case.

Ok idk how many ppl are gonna read this but pls I would love for this to be a bit of a discussion for how people would apply this to themselves/their little pleasures.

Agatha is really good at staying up to date with things as the times change. She needs to make sure she fits in so she doesn't rouse any suspicion, right? So she has to, for survival. Fashion trends, politics, current events, and so on she's on top of.. But she's not good at staying up to date with music. She's horrible about it. You needed to explain everyone from Nirvana to Britney Spears to Billie Eilish to her.

When the 70s hit, she fell in love with that era and hasn't left it. The Cure, Elton John, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, (heavy on Fleetwood Mac), and she just hasn't really kept up since. She's listened to Rumors on repeat since it was released. (Just from vibes alone I feel like she'd love Dreams and probably crushed on Stevie Nicks.)

When you two start dating and you realize this, you think it's so cute. You listen to all of her favorite albums and songs, and love to listen to her stories from the concerts she's gone to. She ends up being a bit of a music dork, she loved going to concerts back in the day but as her favorite artists grew older and slowed down with touring she stopped going to shows.

So you introduce her to more music to bring that love back out of her. (Going off of my favorite musicians) she loves Weezer (Only in Dreams!!), Green Day (LAST NIGHT ON EARTH??), Bastille (Icarus, The Anchor, Warmth??) Chappell Roan, and unexpectedly, Britney Spears!! Also specifically Dragula by Rob Zombie. ("Dig through the ditches and burn through the witches" it should be her badass theme song lmao) (Feel free to add on in the comments w your favorite artists + songs you think she'd like!!)

She'll always go back to her old music taste, but you do notice her peppering in some songs you introduced to her and humming Pink Pony Club to herself.

You bought general admissions tickets to see your favorite artist and surprised her with them. And she's so excited, a wide smile on her face and eyes scrunched up in the cutest way. She looks up the set list to make sure she knows every song.

Because even though she's really good at staying up to date with most things, some stuff slips through the cracks. Or she doesn't have time for all of it. But it's easy for you to see just how much she enjoys discovering things she's missed out on, curiosity seeping through her voice as her wondering eyes light up with interest and it just really tugs on your heart. So you're always trying to find little things she doesn't know about yet.

Poptarts? She's like tf are those let me try them now. She loves the cookies and cream flavor but can only eat one because she thinks they're too sugary. You show her your old DS from when you were young? She gets addicted to Animal Crossing, Agnes is her favorite villager and she loves having you sit and watch her play. Tik Tok? She gets weirdly into Reddit stories. She tries to deny it and calls them stupid while she goes to find part two. Then continues to gossip about the story with you. Then points out everything that makes it obviously fake. (Add any more in the comments that relate to you or you'd just see from her!)

I just feel like Agatha has devoted over three hundred years to magic and big, huge things and adventures that she never gets to really indulge in the little pleasures in life. She has a lot of them to catch up on. While she tries to deny having any interest in it, she really does love when you show her the fun, pointless little things she's missed out on and just a sweet way the two of you really bond.

Her name is/was Cloudy! She's a weird bug-like alien who I'm currently figuring out what to do with because she's a huge self-insert and I feel like I can't do much with her in her current state because I have trouble putting a pin in what makes me "me" so writing her is difficult. As far as "what music would they listen to" I do have some ideas:

The Merchant would like hard-girl-pop (whatever genre Remi Wolf and Marina and the Diamonds are) and Chappell Roan (once again hard-girl-pop and she's also a lesbian like her). Anything upbeat with an edge to it, really. She'd probably also like punk rock, like Weezer or the Beastie Boys or Blink-182, anything catchy and just a bit cheesy/lame (I mean this affectionately). Also Joan Jett and Heart! Anything with women who rock and go hard, really

The Surgeon would listen to depeche mode because they have odd yet darkly erotic vibes. I feel like he'd be into that weird kind of new wave 80s music in general. He also probably listens to horribly numbing elevator jazz (also saying this affectionately as someone who loves this music too). POV you're getting stitches and the doctor won't stop humming along to the "your call is put on hold" music he's blasting in the background

The Paramedic also likes depeche mode for the same reasons. Other than that I can't think of music she'd like...maybe someday I will think up more for her

Q loves bubblegum pop. He'd also like cheery love songs, probably from the 60s or earlier because they tend to have no swearing or overtly sexual themes. She's not a prude, he just gets squeamish around listening to that kind of thing. I feel like Q would also listen to a lot of chiptune and video game soundtracks (Bubblegum K.K. from animal crossing comes to mind as a potential fave of hers)

Jean Doe would listen to breakcore and metal, anything loud with a lot of bass (partially because they're hard of hearing and like feeling the music). They probably prefer instrumental songs over songs with lyrics. They're also very proudly french canadian so there's probably some underground drum-and-bass group from canada that they really like, but alas, I am not super into that genre so I do not know any specific artists they'd listen to...

The Renegade would be a total music snob about her favorite genre...but I have no idea what she's listen to. I almost wanna go the classic "stuck up formal lady listens to only classical/orchestral music" route but I feel like it might be more interesting if her favorite music genre was something unexpected for someone to be snobbish about, like non-serious rap or boy bands or joke/parody songs or something. Starting to actually like the "she's stuck up about the quality of parody songs" concept. She'll put on The Saga Begins by Weird Al and pour a glass of red wine before launcing into a tasteful rant about the ingenuity of using American Pie to create a star wars parody (it's clever and funny on a surface level but it also accurately captures the musical odyssey that is American Pie combined with the sprawling narrative that is star wars, you see, so it has immense dual thematic value--)

Other than that I have no other music thoughts...too many ocs not enough brain space lol but I especially love thinking about their music tastes :D

19. What are some things that inspired your stories? Real events? Maybe a dream?

That's funny that this question mentions dreams because I do have a character who is inspired by a weird recurring nightmare I used to have. Still working on how to fit him into my story as a whole but he's neat I think. Most of my other story ideas are just things I find interesting or messed up or cool or compelling tbh :)

29. What was your first fandom you were in? Did you make any art/fanfic for it?

I joined tumblr back in 2016 for steven universe actually! I was also into homestuck at the time so those were my main two fandoms. I still think fondly of homestuck (mainly the intermission though) and although I never finished steven universe I still think it's a pretty cute show. I didn't start making fanart until mid-2020 (I literally only drew my ocs haha) and I started writing fanfic (again only wrote about my ocs) in early 2023

Shellington stared out the window in silence, gathering his thoughts, a sad expression on his face, Peso had quietly came in the room, he couldn’t help but notice how quiet it was, and the over all sad atmosphere.

Sure, Shellington was quiet, especially while doing his research. But this felt off… dare I say eerie.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Peso said softly, placing a comforting flipper on Shellington’s back, breaking the silence. “Nothing..!” Shellington lied, flinching, not wanting to worry Peso.

“Okay… I suppose it is something..” Shellington admitted “Im kind of sad I guess…” Shellington sighed “why?” Peso pressed, “because we’re leaving…” Shellington said so quietly it was almost a whisper 

“It’s okay! I bet we’ll come back here someday!” Peso assured “thanks Peso.. Shellington replied, feeling slightly better now. 

“Maybe we should throw a sleepover?” Peso proposed  “Oh yeah!” Shellington agreed “after I take a bath we can!” Shellington added, grabbing a towel and walking to the bathroom.

“AND I DON’T WANNA BE AN OLD MAN ANYMORE ITS BEEN A YEAR OR TWO SINCE I WAS OUT ON THE FLOOR SHAKING BOOTY MAKING SWEET LOVE EVERY NIGHT!!!” Shellington’s horrendous singing boomed from the bathroom, Tweak walked by the bathroom door questioning her life decisions.

below the cut is a rant about character-based spotify playlists. it's not meant to offend, i know that this makes people happy and they genuinely enjoy this, but... i'll just let you read if you want.

i can't play devil's advocate with character playlists based on vibes. as much as people try to convince me, i just can't. vibes are subjective. someone can associate a character with the music that's associated with them in-universe, and others can associate that same character with buddy holly by weezer and nothing else. and what does that do? it makes looking for character playlists an absolute FUCKING NIGHTMARE. like, if i go to a hannibal lecter playlist, expecting to hear some chill classical music, and end up hearing goddamn mindless self indulgence in there i am going to go APESHIT (not just because of the inaccuracy, i also fucking hate msi). and it's even worse with characters that have a CANONICAL MUSIC TASTE. and sure, you can argue that "oh we can't assume that that's all they listen to can we??" no, we can't, but hearing hallowed be thy name by iron maiden and heart to heart by mac demarco right next to each other is pretty damn jarring to say the least. ALSO, i thought we were past the era where everyone associated every character with hayloft by mother mother. WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE BETTER THAN THIS. i found out that playlists pertaining to spider-punk (yes, that spider-punk, the one whose movie came out a mere MONTH AGO) STILL HAVE MOTHER MOTHER ON THEM. jebus, you peoples' music tastes haven't changed since 2020 and IT SHOWS. would it actually kill you people to look up "british punk songs" and add those to your playlists? apparently it WOULD, since i have seen hobie brown playlists with NO PUNK WHATSOEVER. NOT EVEN A SINGLE RAMONES OR SEX PISTOLS SONG. NOTHING. and no, punk tactics by joey valence and brae isn't actually punk. in conclusion, i personally don't enjoy "songs that give me [insert character] vibes" because of their inaccuracy, BUT that doesn't mean you shouldn't too. cringe culture is dead and i'm hoping that the necromancer stays away.

Wrote a long ass message in Discord and hit the character limit talking about Weezer and figured I may as well put it here too in case anyone wanted to read it, anyway: My personal Weezer essentials, Blue and Pinkerton are the obvious mandatory introductory listens, aside from those, all the color albums (blue, green, red, white, black, teal kind of but not really) are a must-listen as well. Even Black, although it's widely considered the weakest one, it'll give you a better idea of what type of Weezer music you like or dislike. Teal you can take or leave, it's just covers. White is probably my favorite of all the color albums, if you had to pick just one (other than Blue) then pick White.

Make Believe is one people consider really mediocre but I think it's a hidden gem, simple but sweet! If you listened to the radio in the early 2000s, you've probably heard the track Beverly Hills, which is from this album. Beverly Hills isn't super indicative of the rest of the album, so I recommend giving Make Believe a chance even if you don't like that song.

Raditude is probably their most widely hated album and I love it on its own but also out of sheer spite. It's relatively inoffensive, has a few catchy tunes, and also a few finished versions of Rivers Cuomo's Alone demos (Which I also recommend).

Hurley is a bit of a hidden gem too, a lot of people dismiss it because it is honestly kind of odd, seeing as the cover is an extreme closeup of Jorge Garcia's face and the album is named after his character on Lost. The album is super good if you can get past the weirdness, Also skip Where's My Sex, it's a joke song where the joke is he's singing about socks but he's replaced the word socks with sex. Bad song. Only listen to it if you wanna cringe.

Everything Will Be Alright In The End (EWBAITE for short) is just good. Full stop lol.

Pacific Daydream is a favorite of mine. But it's also pretty polarizing, people love it or hate it, no in between. If you like Black Album or think Black Album is just ok you will probably like PD but if you don't like Black at all you probably won't like PD either.

OK Human is a bit different seeing as it's almost entirely orchestral but all around super good!

Van Weezer is supposed to be an 80s throwback but honestly if you didn't tell me I'd think it was just Weezer being Weezer. Good album, but it mostly just sounds like normal rock music, not very unique but good at what it does. Aside from the song Blue Dream, which is a butchered version of a fan favorite demo (ballad of the briny) where they inserted the riff of crazy train into it for no reason, it's solid!

SZNZ is… So good. When it started with SZNZ: Spring I thought it was pretty good, and was excited to see what direction the rest of the albums would go in. Each album after that, I've liked progressively more, with SZNZ: Autumn being my absolute favorite. I'm really hoping I'll like SZNZ: Winter just as much if not more than Autumn! TLDR: Blue and Pinkerton are essentials, other highlights are the color albums (White especially), Make Believe, Raditude, Hurley, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, Pacific Daydream, OK Human, Van Weezer, and SZNZ: Autumn

Desmond is Three

On Saturday, May 14, 2022, my little dude turned three years old. I threw him his first in real life birthday party at PlayLab in Eagle Rock - Bluey themed - and it was wonderful. I felt like I was getting back to my roots. I handmade all the party favors, which were references to different episodes - Keepy Uppy, Sticky Gecko, Grannies. I also made the cake, the cupcakes, the balloon arch and the banner - mostly out of frustration that what I saw on Etsy was so expensive (rightfully so, these things take time and precision) and also just not trusting anyone else to get my "vision." Listen, it's been YEARS since I've thrown a proper birthday party thanks to COVID, I put ALL my energy into this. Maybe he'll even remember it! I think I recall spending my 3rd birthday on a plane coming from England? Anyway.

Erica Lauren was kind enough to capture all of my efforts (which inadvertently, I swear, included both me and Des dressed in the party palette as well). Peek:

Some for the record stuff: He is 3 feet tall, 28 lbs and his one true love is BALLOONS. He also likes bouncy balls, beach balls, ping pong balls - but nothing else globular measures up to his love of balloons. His favorite food is applesauce and he's started inserting the word "actually" into his sentences.  We sing songs before bed (Christina Perri, Bob Marley, The Zombies) but I can't leave it on after I leave the room or else he will yell "MAMA WHAT'S THIS ONE?" when it gets to Tom Petty and Panic! at the Disco (pretty odd, obvs). Right now one of his faves is the Weezer/Hayley Williams cover of "Rainbow Connection." Sometimes he asks, "What's this one?" when NO MUSIC is playing in what I gather is a nudge to get me to PLAY music when it is SUPPOSED to be QUIET time. He's a huge fan of the Hokey Pokey, and I didn't even teach him that one.

  He likes to read The Wonky Donky and Circle. He says Juliette is his best friend but he likes to play kitchen with Arthur and make up silly words (didia, butbut, oompin) and giggle with Roman. He thinks I get EVERYTHING at Target. He likes to do "science" in the bath with bath bombs but washing his hair lately has been an ORDEAL. He's learning what he can and can't control, often demands we do things "first" or that he does things "ONLY." as in "I want to look out the window ONLY" (not Oli) or "I want to stand against the wall ONLY" (no one else). He will eat lemons without making a face. His favorite color is green. He speaks quietly around strangers but when in public has no problem asking "WHAT IS THAT GUY DOING?" very loudly (note: guy for him is a gender neutral term). He pretends to be a baby by saying "Goo goo gaga" but I remind him that he didn't say that at as a baby - he said "quack" and "puh" and "kiii."

He doesn't sleep as much as he used to. He can dress himself mostly but still has trouble with shirts. He's pretty good at soccer and is very teachable when it comes to physical movements. He knows several yoga poses. One time I woke him up from a nap by reading Mary Oliver poetry out loud and he especially liked the line, "Let me be a flower."  "Yeah! Let me be a flower!" he said. He likes to draw suns and balloons and fireflies. He is always asking me to draw Bluey characters and I always have to look it up first. He likes going to the farm, but prefers picking fruits and vegetables to petting or feeding the animals. Sometimes if you ask him for a snuggle he will decline, but offer a "snug" as a consolation prize. Asking him how many more minutes he wants to play no longer works because he used to answer between 5 and 10 minutes but now he only asks for 60. He hates it when I vacuum  but when he wants a homemade smoothie he asks for it "loud." 

He's overall a pretty chill dude. An observer. He remembers everything. He still talks about a yellow bucket (RIP) that he got from the dentist when he was 1.5 years old. Sometimes he wants to paint his nails so we do. HOGGIE is still his ride or die - that plushie has been to museums, parks, the doctors office. He rubs hoggie's eyes at night, like they're worry stones. He recites the story of The Hungry Caterpillar to Hoggie on the way to school. I love hearing him talk and tell stories. I'm excited to take him on adventures, I love watching him make friends, and it's such a dang gift to see and hear him express himself and assert himself in new ways.
