December Drabbles
Prompt 19: Pine Tree / Christmas tree Characters: Octavinelle (first years) ----------------------------------------------- "Ughhhhh why do we have to be out here again? And why is Jade in charge????" Floyd flopped unceremoniously onto his back into the snow, decidedly tired of walking. The axe they had brought to chop down a tree went down with him, laying slightly buried in the snow. Azul huffed a bit, struggling to catch his breath after walking through the snow for so long, but trying to hide it. He pushed his glasses up slightly, muttering under his breath about how they should have found a tree by now, but spoke up for the second half of his statement. "Jade is in charge because he's the one most familiar with terrestrial flora. That being said, Jade, all of these trees have needles instead of actual leaves, can't we just take one of these ones back to our housewarden?"
Jade looked up thoughtfully from the book in his hand, appearing almost sad. "Nothing we've passed fits all the criteria our housewarden gave us for an ideal Christmas tree." Azul put his hand out for the list Jade had wedged into the book. Jade just looked at his hand, then pulled the book and paper closer to his chest. "Why don't you trust me Azul?" That made Floyd sit up, and Azul look surprised. Azul tilted his head a bit, visibly irritated. "I think the better question is, what are you hiding from us Jade?" Jade's mismatched eyes shifted between Azul and his brother, before pretending to tear up and cry. "I just thought that after all this time you guys would trust me more. I'm just trying to find the perfect tree for our dorm...." Floyd and Azul exchanged a knowing look as Floyd hefted the axe across his shoulders. "Ok, cut the act Jade, hand over the book and whatever you've got inside it." Jade immediately stopped, looking rather peeved before shoving the book at Azul, then grabbing his twin and dragging him towards a nearby fir tree. While Floyd protested a bit, Jade grumpily told him he could chop down one they had just passed. Floyd eyed Jade suspiciously, but didn't care about the trek anymore as he finally got to use the axe, laughing gleefully. Jade made sure to give him wide berth, sulking silently behind him. Azul opened the book to where a note stuck out slightly, reading it over in confusion. Trametes versicolor Dacrymyces palmatus Hericium erinaceus Exidia glandulosa Inonotus obliquus Beside each name was a rough sketch...of mushrooms?? At least some of them looked like mushrooms. Azul looked up in mild disbelief at Jade. Jade met felt his eyes on him and sighed, trudging over to Azul. "Don't tell Floyd, please?? I...I wanted to look for all those alone, but I felt a lot more comfortable walking in a new area with other people first..." Jade averted his eyes and tried to hide into the collar of his jacket. Azul took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose. Sometimes it was difficult to tell Jade's sincerity, even after all these years. If what he was saying was true, how could Azul stay mad about the extra time he supposedly 'wasted' in the woods. ".....just don't slow us down by looking for these on the way back, ok?" Jade nodded, though he looked like a kicked puppy. Azul sighed and handed back the book and list of fungi. "I'm sure we can arrange something for a later time if you ever require company on your little foraging exp-"
The tree cracked and fell to the ground. Floyd gave Jade and Azul a thumbs up, smiling brightly before he noticed something leaking from the tree. "OOOH SYRUP!" He squatted down to touch the amber liquid leaking from the tree's trunk. Azul looked mildly interested, walking over, but Jade tried to wrack his memory if there was any downside to pine syrup....yes syrup came from trees, but wasn't there a step in between? His suspicions were affirmed when Floyd's face twisted in disgust, his tongue lolling out of his mouth as he panicked and fanned his tongue a little. "NOT syrup, NOT SYRUP JADE WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP ME?!" Floyd scooped up some snow, first for his mouth in an attempt to wash out the taste of the sap, then some for his hands to try and get the sticky liquid off, and the the third to throw some snow in Jade in light hearted frustration. Jade feigned a hurt expression. "You know if I had remembered I would have told you. However, my interest lies in fungi, not gymnosperms. All I know is that the small amount you had shouldn't be toxic to you. At least now I can be put at ease knowing you won't try to drink sap of any kind again." He chuckled softly, much to Floyd's chagrin. Azul sighed, pushing his glasses up his face again. "Come on, it's best we be heading back. I'll carry the axe. You two carry the tree. I trust you won't destroy it before we get back to the dorm. Do not let my trust be misplaced.....again." Jade shot Azul a glare, and kept his book out. "It's not so fragile it will break with a bit of dragging. Floyd can handle pulling it along on his own. I still have something I'm looking for." Floyd shrugged, and started pulling the tree back towards the school, leaving Jade and Azul to another one of their weird little feuds.
Azul looked upset again, huffing slightly. "You said you wouldn't slow us down looking for those blasted fungi!" It was Jade's turn to look a little mad. He bent at the waist and poked Azul's chest. "I won't be slowing anyone down. As it was, on the way up it was you who was trailing behind. Do try to keep up Azul. The only ones allowed to have you a snack would be Floyd and I." He gave Azul a wide grin, showing off his teeth, before turning and walking away, his nose already buried in his book. Azul just sighed, but tried to walk faster to keep up with the freakishly tall twins. He knew full well they both enjoyed the fact they were bigger than him on land. He also knew while their relationship was....odd...he couldn't ask for friends in any other way. They were perfect. At least to him. And he was good enough.....that they had chosen to stay with him for this long. He only hoped that would be the case for years to come.

Newspaper Helsingin Sanomat highlighted that greenhouse gas emissions in the Helsinki metropolitan area fell significantly last year.
The newspaper said that across the entire capital region emissions have fallen by 20 percent. In Helsinki, emissions decreased by 25 percent. In Espoo and Kauniainen, they dropped by 15 percent, while Vantaa experienced an emissions reduction of eight percent.
This is according to preliminary figures published by Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY). While energy production figures have already been accounted for, HSY still needs to add new information on traffic.
HSY's experts said a number of factors help explain the drop in emissions.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine spurred Finland to replace Russian natural gas with coal and oil, which led to a spike in emissions for 2022.
Emissions also dropped in 2023 as the capital region moved away from coal on a large scale, shutting down coal power plants like Hanasaari.
Additionally, there were other factors responsible for the capital region's emission reduction, such as an increase in wind power capacity and electricity from the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant.
Electricity consumption also fell in the Helsinki metropolitan area, but only by about 3.5 percent, despite high electricity costs last year.
Soini on upcoming EU elections
Business daily Kauppalehti interviewed the Finns Party's retired ex-chair — and current political commentator — Timo Soini on the upcoming EU elections.
The EU-sceptic Soini made it clear that the main issue with the European Union is where the sovereignty of nation-states ends and where that of the EU begins.
"But there is more to the EU than that, as the recent security situation in Europe has shown us very well," Soini said.
The far-right in Europe looks poised to win big and a possible coalition between the centre-right European People's Party, far-right Europe of Conservatives and Reformists, and the radical right Identity and Democracy groups could form in the European Parliament after the elections.
"Marine Le Pen made an excellent political play by proposing to Giorgia Meloni that they join forces. It's a big play, because there are up to 30 right-wing MEPs from both countries," Soini said, referring to France's Le Pen proposing last week to Italian PM Meloni that the two should ally together in the European Parliament.
Soini added that in the future more member states might take the route of Hungary and Poland, opposing the EU in favour of the nation-state, despite the threat of disciplinary measures against those states.
At the same time, Soini also said that he would not accept pro-Russian parties, such as Hungary's Fidesz in the Europe of Conservatives and Reformists.
"Pro-Russian parties are not for Europe or peace," Soini said.
Finland's maple syrup?
Rural-focused newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus posited that Finns may not be reaping the full rewards of the forest's bounty.
Citing the success of North America's maple syrup industry, the newspaper looked at other natural products found in Finnish forests that could be sold to reap profits for forest owners.
While berries and some long-established edible mushrooms have served as some sources of profit, there are a few other ways for Finnish forest owners to make money besides selling firewood and wood chips.
A survey commissioned by MT last winter said that more than two-thirds of forest owners had not received any side income from their forests in the past five years.
Certain items like birch sap — that could be turned into syrup — and chaga (Inonotus obliquus) — a fungus that grows on tree bark used often in East Asian medicinal teas — are not intensively cultivated in Finland.
However, ramping up production for such natural products presents itself with many bottlenecks. For example, inoculating and growing chaga is so new that 'farmed' chaga has never been harvested, and commercial sales have been limited to the wild-grown variant.
This means that the fungus is rare and difficult to commercially replicate as a natural product.

Antiviral effects of mushrooms
"According to the literature, the related medicinal mushrooms, Agaricus blazei Murill, Hericium erinaceus, Grifola frondosa and Inonotus obliquus might have value as prophylactic or therapeutic add-on remedies in COVID-19 infection, particularly as countermeasures against pneumococcal superinfection, even when caused by multiresistant bacteria, and for the immune overreaction and damaging inflammation that occurs with COVID-19 attack (Hetland et al., 2021; Shahzad et al., 2020)."

This makes it an excellent supplement for athletes and those with demanding lifestyles.
Hormonal Balance: Maca root is particularly beneficial for hormonal health. Men can also benefit from maca’s ability to enhance fertility and boost libido.
Mood Enhancement: Maca root is rich in flavonoids, which are known to improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. It promotes mental well-being and helps to stabilize mood swings.
Cognitive Function: Emerging research suggests that maca root may enhance cognitive function, improving memory and learning capabilities. This makes it a valuable supplement for students and professionals alike.
Organic and Non-GMO: Their maca is organically grown in the pristine highlands of Peru, free from pesticides and genetically modified organisms. This ensures the highest quality and safety.

Multiple Forms: Whether you prefer powder, capsules, or liquid extracts, we offer a variety of maca root supplements to suit your needs. This versatility makes it easy to incorporate maca into your daily routine.
The Wonders of Chaga Mushroom
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a type of fungus that grows on birch trees in cold climates, particularly in Siberia, Russia, and parts of North America. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its powerful health benefits. Known as the “king of mushrooms,” chaga is packed with antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that support overall health.
Health Benefits of Chaga
Immune System Support: Chaga is one of the most potent sources of antioxidants, particularly superoxide dismutase (SOD), which helps fight oxidative stress and boost the immune system. Regular consumption of chaga can help protect the body from infections and diseases.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Chaga contains betulinic acid and other anti-inflammatory compounds that help reduce inflammation in the body. This makes it beneficial for conditions such as arthritis and other inflammatory diseases.
Potential Anti-Cancer Properties: Preliminary studies suggest that chaga may have anti-cancer properties. Compounds found in chaga can inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis (cell death) in tumor cells, making it a promising natural remedy for cancer prevention.
Digestive Health: Chaga supports digestive health by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and reducing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. It can help alleviate digestive disorders and improve overall gut health.
Why Choose Chaga Supplements from Mind-BodyBoost ?
Wild-Harvested and Sustainable: Their chaga is sustainably wild-harvested from pristine forests, ensuring the highest quality and potency. Sustainable harvesting practices ensure that the chaga population remains healthy and abundant.
Dual Extraction Process: To maximize the beneficial compounds, chaga supplements undergo a dual extraction process. This method combines both water and alcohol extraction techniques to ensure a full spectrum of bioactive components, providing you with a potent and effective supplement.
High Potency: Each chaga supplement is formulated to provide a high concentration of polysaccharides and other active compounds. This ensures that you receive the full health benefits of chaga with every dose.

Tumblr media
In recent years, health enthusiasts have been gravitating towards natural supplements, and one standout in this category is mushroom supplement powder. This trend is more than just a passing phase; it is rooted in the substantial health benefits that these fungi offer. Here’s a detailed look at why mushroom supplement powder has become a staple for those committed to maintaining and enhancing their well-being.
A Historical Perspective
Mushrooms have been used for centuries in various cultures for their medicinal properties. Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and even ancient Egyptian practices have documented the use of mushrooms for their healing benefits. Modern science has started to validate many of these traditional uses, shedding light on the potent bioactive compounds found in mushrooms.
Rich Nutrient Profile
Mushroom supplement powders offer a natural, holistic approach to enhancing health, making them a valuable addition to any wellness routine. It is derived from various species, each boasting a unique nutrient profile. Brainezy used mushrooms include:
Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) stands out for its cognitive benefits. Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, it supports memory and focus, potentially aiding nerve regeneration and bolstering the immune system. It may also help manage anxiety and depression.
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) is renowned for its immune-boosting polysaccharides, enhancing the body’s defense mechanisms. Research suggests it supports cancer treatment, improves gut health, and reduces inflammation.
Shiitake (Lentinula edodes), a staple in traditional medicine, is rich in lentinan, which bolsters the immune system and combats infections. These mushrooms also contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that may lower cholesterol, support heart health, and exhibit anti-cancer properties.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), known as the “mushroom of immortality,” has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It boosts the immune system, reduces inflammation, and supports overall well-being. Its adaptogenic properties help manage stress, improve sleep, and enhance longevity.
Cordyceps enhances endurance and energy levels by improving oxygen utilization, making it popular among athletes. It supports respiratory health, reduces inflammation, and strengthens the immune system, contributing to overall vitality.

Maitake (Grifola frondosa), also known as “Hen of the Woods,” supports immune function with its beta-glucans. It may help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, offering potential benefits for those with diabetes or metabolic issues.

King Trumpet (Pleurotus eryngii), offers culinary delight and health advantages. It’s a great source of ergothioneine, an antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress, and is rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein, supporting immune health and overall well-being.
Immune System Support
One of the primary reasons health enthusiasts are turning to mushroom powder is its ability to boost the immune system. The beta-glucans found in mushrooms activate various immune cells, enhancing the body’s ability to fight off infections and diseases. Regular consumption of mushroom powder can lead to a more resilient immune response, which is particularly beneficial during cold and flu season.
Cognitive Enhancement
In an age where cognitive performance is highly valued, mushrooms like Lion’s Mane have gained popularity for their neuroprotective properties. Studies suggest that compounds in Lion’s Mane promote the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), which supports the maintenance and regeneration of neurons. This can lead to improved memory, focus, and overall brain health, making it a favorite among students, professionals, and older adults.
Stress Reduction and Adaptogenic Properties
Reishi and Cordyceps are renowned for their adaptogenic properties, which help the body adapt to stress and restore balance. These mushrooms can modulate the body’s stress response, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calm. In today’s fast-paced world, the ability to manage stress effectively is crucial, and mushroom supplements offer a natural solution.
Antioxidant Powerhouse
Mushrooms like Chaga are incredibly rich in antioxidants, which play a critical role in protecting the body from oxidative stress and free radical damage. Antioxidants help to reduce inflammation, slow down the aging process, and lower the risk of chronic diseases. Incorporating mushroom powder into a daily routine can thus contribute to long-term health and vitality.
Enhanced Energy and Endurance
For those leading active lifestyles, Cordyceps has become a go-to supplement. Known for increasing ATP production (the energy currency of the cell), Cordyceps can boost physical performance, enhance stamina, and speed up recovery. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts often add Cordyceps powder to their pre-workout routines to gain a natural edge.
Versatile and Easy to Incorporate
One of the practical reasons for the popularity of mushroom supplement powder is its versatility. It can be easily added to smoothies, coffee, tea, soups, and even baked goods. This ease of incorporation makes it simple for individuals to enhance their diet without making significant changes to their daily routines.
Conclusion
The popularity of mushroom supplement powder among health enthusiasts is well-founded, given its myriad of health benefits. From boosting the immune system and enhancing cognitive function to providing stress relief and improving physical performance, mushrooms offer a natural, holistic approach to health. As research continues to unveil more about these incredible fungi, it’s likely that their popularity will only continue to grow. For those looking to enhance their well-being naturally, mushroom supplement powder is a powerful and versatile addition to their health regimen.
