Hoof fungus 》 Fomes fomentarius

Also known as tinder fungus and ice man fungus, this species has been used by humans for thousands of years to produce the material known as amadou from its spongy interior. It has long been used as tinder for slow-burning fires and was found along with the remains of Otzi the Iceman, a 5000-year-old, naturally mummified human whose remains were found preserved in glacial ice in the Otztal Alps. Amadou also has excellent absorptive properties and can be used to make felt and leather-like fabrics.

Daily Fungi Fact 133: Amadou is a spongy material obtained from Tinder Fungus(Fomes fomentarius), it can be used to start slow burning fires. Amadou also has great water absorbing properties, and can be made into a fabric that resembles felt and can be used as an artificial leather. Mycologist Paul Stamets is known for wearing a hat made from amadou(he also has a star trek character named after him).

cool ass mushrooms i found. no idea what any of then are but i’ll check back in if i find out.

EDIT: i believe that the small white ones in clusters may be coprinellus disseminatus, aka the fairy inkcap or trooping crumble cap.

EDIT 2: found another! the big round ones are scleroderma citrinum, i believe, or the common earthball.

EDIT 3: first one is hoof fungus, fomes fomentarius, i think?

Daily Fungi Fact 134: The tinder fungus(Fomes fomentarius) is also known as false tinder fungus, it was given the false tinder fungus name to differentiate it from Chaga(Inonotus obliquus), which is also known as true tinder fungus. Regardless of what you call them, both false and true tinder fungus make excellent tinder.
