Miss Jackson was experiencing contractions and made it aware to the staff at a Broward County, Florida, jail, yet did not receive immediate assistance. It took nearly 7 hours from the time Miss Jackson first notified the jail staff until medical physicians came to her aid and by that time she had already given birth to her baby girl, Miranda Latrice Nixon, in a cell.⁣ ⁣ The organization in charge of providing correctional healthcare nationwide, Wellpath, has had numerous lawsuits similar and much worse held against it. ⁣ Another woman who was 29 weeks pregnant at the time of her arrest was threatened with the possibility of disciplinary action if she continued to ask for prenatal care from jail staff. A month later, she was vomiting up blood and informed the staff that she could not feel one of her babies moving anymore - she was pregnant with twins. Rather than calling an ambulance, she was driven by one of the guards in a van whom, while on the way to the hospital, stopped at a fast food restaurant. Ultimately, one of the babies was stillborn and the other was born with server health issues. ⁣ ⁣ 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:⁣ The effects the prison system deals towards mothers and their babies has been known to cause devastatingly emotional and mental damage. An increase in youth crimes by children who have the unfortunateness of being put into the foster care system. It is all too common for the daughters of these imprisoned women to eventually join their mothers in the same prison. Society so quickly discards men, labeling them as "criminals," and deeming them worth no further consideration. But the reality is that we all share the same broken human nature and the same vulnerability to a random moment of chaos that sends life spiraling out of control. This is especially true in third-world nations like Brazil where the chaos swirls around everyone, everywhere, all the time. One wrong step and they find themselves rotting in what is basically an abandoned warehouse full of other such "criminals". Such tragedy can only be understood and mediated by our Brother Jesus who not only touched the chaos of this world, but conquered it to provide complete redemption, forgiveness, and victory to all who believe in Him.

This prison sits a few hours outside a major city in Brazil. The winding road seemed to take forever to get there. When we arrived the warden was very unique and special man. He contact the mayor of the little town where the prison is situated and got him to bring out about 400 chairs for the men to make the event possible and a special experience for the men.

The guys were very unique, very warm and open to us and our message. Some had sentences ranging from a few years, up to one man I talked to, had been in there 18 years, hard to believe out in a hell hole way in the middle of no where out here. We were able to have a phenominal event and slowly, and in great detail share the message of the Gospel of Jesus with the men. At times some of the guys were in tears. At one moment, it was special, in the course of teaching about the need to care for each other and love each other, I said, "I mean could you guys ever just put your arm on someone else, look at them and talk to them, even a stranger." Simlataniously, all the guys, about 400 present, put their arms on the guy sitting next to them. I was quite a thing to behold.

Many said they had never had a moment like this in their whole lives. To this day, a few years later, men still come write us from this even saying how it marked their minds and hearts forever. I was just talking to a Capoeria instructor who was incarcerated there. Initially he was a bit more distant because of his pride. He just wrote me from the contact he had on the flyers we gave him and said he is going through hell and misses us a lot. Two years later? Wow. We pray for these men and hope to return one day if God allows.

As I walked into this yard, one of the young men explained he had not been outside or seen the sun in 5 months because there is only one yard and several thousand men. He had years to go. Walking through that building there, and several behind it, there was no wiring or electricity so the place was dark. Rains had left the inside soaked and puddles on the ground. The bottom floor had about six inches of trash. No furnishings or a/c or offices or people coming and going. Just a cement and iron warehouse full of men locked in 6 stories of sadness and regret. The clanging of the iron keys echoed through the whole building as the guard escorted me to each floor and each cell.  I've been to a lot of places in a lot cities and never seen such a dungeon. If you ever think your living situation is bad, and surely it may be, but just imagine in another life, who knows, you could have ended up spending years in a place like this. It was our privilege to spend the day with these men, teaching, sharing, laughing, playing music and sharing the perspective of eternal life and the love and unconditional forgiveness of the Father. We distributed thousands of posters for their walls with thoughts of hope and a new perspective, health kits, gospel materials, booklets, bibles, footballs, soccer balls and some clothes. The gratetitude and openness was remarkable.How they keep a smile and an upbeat attitude in such a place is mind-blowing. Some very strong and beautiful men, eager for a second chance. Many have contacted us upon their release and we continue to be apart of their journey. Thank you, Jesus. May He have mercy on all those who remain there.

My family and I have learned, after working in prisons for so long, that even the littlest things can mean everything to those who have nothing. A string of prisons we worked in for a while in Southern Brazil had very tight limitations on what we could bring in so we were limited to popcorn and candy for all the guys. I didn't think much of it, but afterwards I was so surprised and blessed by how much they felt loved by it and how much it meant to them. We'd bring in loads and loads of popcorn and candies as we worked with them and taught about Jesus, and they were just so grateful. A while later a guy named David sent us a photo of the wrappers in his window sill. He explained he had no visitors and he kept those wrappers as a reminder that he is loved and remember a day when he felt normal again. He went to a "friends" house to help with something and was hit in the head with a shovel and left at a crime scene. Video footage acquitted him, but the prosecutor just destroyed it and now he has a very long sentence and a serious brain injury. So many guys claim to be innocent, of course, but some surely seem sincere.
