#inkling octoling hybrid

i doodled these splatoon idols forever ago and with art fight coming up i finally got the motivation and energy to render them out :3

they are Rayve, a stingray, and Scovri, an inkling-octoling hybrid! Together they are Colorful Waves, a new up-and-coming idol duo :3c

I recently drew my latest Splatoon OC, and I decided to name her Taikako, and she's an Inktoling.

I messed up in a few spots but I'm still happy with it.

Hi!! I was thinking, what's your opinion about inktolings? Like I'm 99% sure they'll never be properly canon (due to various reasons including biology), but I wondered if you had any specific thoughts or headcanons about them. I'd love to know :')

in general, personally not a fan of the concept of hybrids in the splatoon world. if it were possible for stable hybrids to happen in a society comprised of so many species that have been intermingling for generations, i dont think we'd see the level of speciation that we do. it makes for messy worldbuilding.

inklings and octolings have had peaceful relations with each other for millennia and with how similar they look, i have zero doubt that some have tried for kids. but biologically speaking squids and octopuses as distant as cats and dogs (maybe even more distant than that, at least cats and dogs share a taxonomic order, squids and octopuses only share a class). the only way id imagine an inktoling to exist would be nothing short of a miracle, and would be sterile, likely with some kind of health issues. the sapient herrings in splatoon can produce hundreds of children and this likely applies at least to other species of fish too. for couples of different species who want children, i think there would be no shortage of children to adopt.

I dont get why so many people want another species in splatoon 4 like the entire point of the story of splatoon is the war and divide between inklings and octolings and them coming back together after they're reconnected by the human spirit like. another species would throw off that yin and yang balance. yeah inklings and octolings were at war and used to live in harmony but while octolings were forced underground after losing the turf war against inklings the issue of less land for all the species had no effect on the 3rd species the sharkling. they were all just chilling.

like I know theyd add lore for another species and connect them into other preexisting storylines but it would always feel shoved in no matter what. it needs to just stay inklings and octolings so the parallel yin and yang two sides of the same coin theme of the entire story stays. not even mentioning the fact that if they did try and connect lore with inklings octolings and a 3rd species itd be too similar to the story of inklings and octolings we already just saw play out bc itd just be explaining how that species fit into everything

7 AM Splatoon art dump

So there is a LOT to explain here.

The purple hybrid squid is my main Splatoon persona, and his name is Shockwave (my name in Splatoon lol)

Striped red squid is a guy that comes from the war era of Splatoon, his name is Jiahao and he's of a Chinese descent.

Itch is an OC I didn't really plan on using, which is why I'm going to be giving her away. She's a defective octoling that has lanky arms and think the idea of being sanitized is pretty fresh. If you want her please tell me. I am willing to get rid of her for free.

Purple octoling is one of my inkling OCs, just drawn as an octoling

The Elite Octarian girl is a big 6 foot soldier named "Bandana" who is very sweet and loves squids of all kinds, (she doesn't know that war entails the eradication of the other kind)

Would both the inkzaps and octozaps eventually become one big colony? ONE BIG CUDDLE PILE?!?!

If they could they would but no octozaps leave the kettles to help support the kettles even after most of the octolings moved to the surface

They stay willingly but they will cuddle with any zapling that is in the kettles in hiding from the NSS

I'll do art for them eventually all together

Ta da!!! Presenting my new OC, sprocket the hybrid inktoling! I’m only going to show a run down/summary since I only have that. The second part will come soon since I’m still fixing it up.

Sprocket is a hybrid and is based off both the dumbo octopus (if their floppy fins didn’t give that away) and the Humboldt squid. Which is why their ears are super long and pointy. Much like the Humboldt squid in real life, sprocket has the ability to “blink” their hair to give off signals for certain effects during shows. They appear as a relatively laid back and kinda lazy person. But in reality they’re just chronically tired. Sprocket tends to be a bit of a workaholic due to the demands of being a rockstar. While they love performing in front of an audience, it can become rather taxing on them to the point where all they want to do is draw and make plushies all day. They formed a band with three other octoling friends called, “Takoyaki Takeover” where they play emotional rock similar to artists like Paramore, pierce the veil, and Avril Lavigne. Sprocket’s hair covers their eyes not because they’re shy, they just find it uncomfortable to look others directly in the eyes unless it’s someone they trust. Their hair is tied back in a pony tail for shows though. Sprocket is actually an ambivert and loves spending time with friends. Especially during splatfests where their seemingly “lazy” and laid back personality becomes overridden by their competitive nature. Sprocket loves to play, but sometimes their workaholic personality and need to be, “the best” puts pressure on their ability to just have fun.
