Spy x Family AU fanart is back!

@ghostypetrainer I kid you not, drawing for your AU is one of my favourite things to do on Tumblr. I just love this gosh darn AU so much.

So... Zisu angst. :'D

She barely has angst so I might as well make it myself. Lol

Her lack of a backstory in canon kind of fits with her mysterious backstory in the AU: We just completely don't know much about Zisu.

I can imagine Zisu seeing herself and her mom in Akari and Ingo from time to time.

She looks at the way Ingo's neutral expression softens anytime he's with Akari, how he treats her like his own daughter despite the fact that this is a fake family with their own benefits. He doesn't have to put on the act inside the house, yet he happily takes his role as a father seriously.

Ingo reminds her off her mother, caring and sacrificial. Ingo puts her father to shame, beyond the man with the same blood as hers.

She looks at Akari and is sometimes reminded of herself. Once an active and carefree kid like her past self. How this kid has full confidence on Zisu to fix any problem that comes her way. For as long as they are a "fake family", she will protect that active and carefree personality till she is no longer needed.

Just for this moment, the greatest spy sees these two together and mourns for the first family she loved and lost all those years ago.

So yeah. Zisu angst- :'D

I can't believe Ingo got shot in the butt. Incredible. Good thing he's built up such an immunity to poison that the Qwilfish poison just becomes a painkiller to him. Meanwhile, Zisu is racking her brain over what could have possibly caused Ingo's bad mood, all while Akari and Laventon tail them on their date and she has to pretend she hasn't noticed them.

{Ingo catches his S/o and Lucas before they go on an excursion to the coastlands.]

Ingo: I-..*ahem* I was wondering if perhaps I could accompany you on your outing.

I-S/o: I wouldn’t mind it, but don’t you have recruits to train at the dojo?

Ingo: Um...Normally yes, but captain Zisu has relieved me of duty until the recruits have gained a bit more...Experience.

I-S/o: Your teams too powerful for them. Now everyone’s scared to battle you, am I right?

{Ingo sheepishly nods while fiddling with his hat.]

Lucas: We could trade places! Ingo can help you out in field and I can help Zisu train the guards, I’m sure she won’t mind and Kamado can’t really complain c’os I’m still contributing to the team.

Ingo: You don’t have to do that Lu- 

{Lucas suddenly pulls Ingo aside out of I-S/o’s hearing range.}

Lucas, Whispering: Dude! Are you serious right now?

Ingo: What?

Lucas: When’s the last you and the chief have been alone together? I’m doing you a favor man, take it!

Ingo, blushes realizing what Lucas means: Oh.

{The two go back to I-S/o, she looks at the both with suspicion.]

Ingo: I’ll go speak to Cyllene and will return to you shortly.

I-S/o, to Lucas: What were you two whispering about?

Lucas: Sorry Chief. Can’t tell you, guy code, everything's confidential.

I-S/o, flatly: uh-huh....

{A few moments later Ingo returned with the go ahead from Cyllene, Lucas went to the training grounds to help Zisu and Ingo accompanied I-S/o and the professor to the Coastlands.}

When I read the fic I just knew!!! I needed to draw it, because I also tend to be a lil emotional over having physical photos and a tiny album about the people I love. I just hope I got everyone character correct haha

Still trying to progress/finish my ongoing multi-chapters. It’s been... something, alright. This chapter fought me so darn much, but it’s finally finished ^^

Not sure I like it all that much, but since I struggled I’m leaving it like that. Besides, it’s kinda necessary for some interesting stuff for later in this fic :) 

This Is Home

When the thought of home is a fleeting concept, with your memory working against you, there is nothing left to do but to adapt. That, however, never meant giving up on going back.

Chapter 4: Follow the schedule

Sometimes, important memories or changes are associated with certain foods. Emmet has taken a liking to cookies. Zisu's favored blend of Petilil tea now tastes like ash.

Happy 2000-- er... 2400 followers! I suppose this is what I get for overestimating how long it would take me to do two full bodies and 14 busts which I wound up cropping anyway lol.

So first off, this was a considerable challenge for me since I don't normally draw in an anime style, and I think that shows. There were a lot of wonky proportions that I ended up having to go back and sort of fix in post. Irida, Rei, and Akari were especially bad-- my own sister told me that Rei looked like "a cross between a Victorian orphan and a frog". I decided to redraw all three of them, but since I drew them on a smaller canvas, I think it messed with the resolution a little when I shrank them down. I'm not sure anyone would notice if they weren't looking for it, but I've been staring at this for so long that I can't unsee it.

Next was the brilliant decision to put Emmet, Elesa, and Drayden on a light background. They initially faded right in, so I went back over some of the outlines to make them more readable; I had also tried putting the whole Unova set on a darker background, but found that it drew too much attention and unbalanced the piece.

On to the good things!

I adore how Melli and Zisu turned out. I don't know what it was, but my art game was on point that day.

I also had a lot of fun trying out different motifs. I knew from the outset that I wanted to play around with the duality of black/white, the duality of past/future, and the idea of making the whole disk resemble a PokéBall. The center design had me stumped for a while; I had initially used screenshots of the Highlands and Gear Station as placeholders during my planning stage, but around halfway through I decided that would be too busy and changed it to a simple railway track design instead. Then I decided I didn't like that either, and at the last minute I went back to a simplified version of my original concept. I think the stylized Coronet mountain range and subway train work nicely.

Other trivia:

During my planning phase, I used everyone's official art as placeholders-- except for Zisu, who for some reason I couldn't find any for. I used a screenshot for her placeholder, and referenced her TCG card for the final drawing.

Emmet being the only character drawn from a head on angle was deliberate. I wanted to subtly highlight his importance while still being able to place a key Pokémon in the center of both groups.

I drew all of my initial sketches on paper, lined and colored in Clip Studio, and compiled/edited everything in GIMP. I am a chaos gremlin and I will not apologize.

The reason I settled on a Station of Awakening as a follower celebration is threefold: The first is that I was hanging out with some good friends, and we wound up playing Melody of Memory. I forget exactly how it came up, but it was definitely a joke at the time as I do recall saying that it would take me forever... which it did, lol. The second reason is that I later realized that my first post on the blog (after the original "Ingo shouldn't be in old timey Hisui" (x) post) was Kingdom Hearts themed (x). The circle of stupidity is complete! And finally, I'm old enough to remember when making one of these for your blorbo was The Big Fandom Thing ™ that everyone did, and I wanted to indulge in a bit of nostalgia.

BUT ALSO YEAH. YEAH. The way Emmet feels like he has to be responsible for paying Ingo back because he had the more ‘normal’ childhood of the two... and the way Ingo thinks that he doesn’t owe him anything. It’s good. It’s so good.

Saw your dojoshipping + spyxfamily concept and instantly thought of the part where Yors brother shows up wondering how she didn't tell him she got married only instead its Emmet.

@ghostypetrainer is the one who first started this AU and has talked more about Emmet taking Yuri's role in the story. I recommend checking it out.

I'm just here to make the art for the AU. :)

Emmet as Yuri has always been an amusing thought in my head anytime I thought of this AU. (And it's STRICTLY PLATONIC. We ignore what made Yuri... unqiue. Oof)

It's the bittersweet idea that depsite the fact that they're twins, Ingo took the more big brother role due to their parents' death, so they were each other's only family. Obviously Emmet would do whatever he can to repay him back for the support and sacrifices that Ingo made.

There is nothing to repay him back though. Ingo is just glad that he could keep each other well fed and educated.

No matter what AU he is in, Emmet will always suffer in the confusion. Emmet, I'm sorry. Lol

A spy x family situation concept: through various unique circumstances, three things happen. Emmet becomes aware that Zisu's life is currently under threat, Zisu becomes aware that Ingo's life is currently under threat, and, Ingo becomes aware that Emmet's life is currently under threat. It is up to our hero, Akari, to make sure they all successfully protect each other. And also, never find out WHY they were under threat exactly. She's in over her head.

Akari's Super Exhausting, No Good, Very Bad Day in which she not only has to protect her loved ones, but also protect her loved ones from discovering each other's secret and blowing all the drama wide open... which she doesn't want!! Where else will she find entertainment value like this?

This does lead to a very cute scene where Akari passes out, exhausted, and Zisu carries her home piggyback while she and Ingo talk about their days (and don't mention all of their Secret Escapades). They're a family, your honor.

Ingo, burying his head into her neck: He can wait longer....

Ingo, blushing as he recalled Lady Irida walking in on them: *Mumbling* How was I to know she would just walk in? she usually knocks!

I-S/o: I know, she still has trouble looking me in the eye when we talk. 

{Knock, knock}

Zisu: (outside) Warden Ingo? You’re needed at the Dojo! Chop, Chop! Those recruits aren’t gonna train themselves! 

Ingo: (groans in despair.)

I-S/o: Well looks we’re both getting an early start today, now let’s get up love! *kisses a pouting Ingo on the cheek.*
