I don't have my head in the game for my WIPs this afternoon, so please instead accept seven sentences from chapter 5 of When Soulmates Swim (now on Ao3!) plus a little moodbord for what I had in my head around the time of writing - except that shot of happy Ronen, which came later, but is perfect 💙
“Are there outdoor pools in Manhattan?” Carlos asks as he sweeps into the parking lot, realizing more and more that he knows so little about such a major city because he’s only experienced it through movies and the occasional episode of Sex and the City wafting by on HBO.
“There are some,” TK says, “But my mom had a filthy rich client with a rooftop pool, so mainly we’d use that.”
Carlos flickers with a small internal cringe, hearing this – maybe the pool they’ve just arrived at will be too provincial for TK’s Manhattanite standards. It’s barely changed since it was opened in 1983; any paintjob or pool deck maintenance has retained the same color scheme, so the changing room block is always a pale peach shade, the asymmetric flagstone paving is pink and yellow, and the interior of the pool is powder blue. Bordering the chain link fences is a bed of sand from which dry-looking palm trees rustle in the hot wind. There's an emotionally retro aspect to this outdoor pool that feels the same as entering a beachside arcade with a Pacman riser, or a video rental store on the brink of closure. But, perhaps due to this, TK seems totally charmed when they wander in and pay their entry toll, plus purchase a token to hire an inflatable mat.

I mean, a permanent pool, dug into the ground? No. I have known one family that rich and they were offputtingly ostentatious.
When I was a teen it was a great luxury when we got an inflatable wading pool big enough that it came with a filter.
This summer, my household put together our four incomes and bought a canvas pool big enough to stand up in and completely failed to keep up with the required maintenance so we drained and put it away a couple months early, but we have plans on how to do better next year. I'm amazed we got as much use out of it as we did.
for a literature essay im writing im inexplicably looking up a lot of articles abt private pools and american culture and now im curious.
i'm dutch, and to me a private pool seems like the height of ostentatious luxury. i don't know anyone in my country who has a private pool, i grew up swimming in public pools or whatever random body of water was nearby, lakes or rivers or canals or whatever. american media has so many private pools though, are they really that common?
