THE TIME HAS COME EVERYONE. first and foremost — hes half japanese because i remember his aside counterpart being japanese iirc and i thought that was really cool and wanted to implement that into my own little hc (also he speaks like a dozen languages bc of another thing i'll go into detail with in a bit

so many different facial features, scarring (theres a very elaborate reason for this tbh), moles, freckles, etc all bc why not?? (freckles is primarily bc of my bestie crow and now im obsessed)

lashes bc why not, give every man a pair of lashes i think theyre pretty

PIERCINGS. so many piercings. this is primarily because i am a very firm believer that tabi gets piercings done because he wants to feel human again so he finds comfort in decorating himself as much as possible for that reason and also the aesthetic

HE HAS LONG HAIR BC I SAID SO ‼️‼️ i figured considering he's been invisible for so long he never really knew what to do when it came to cutting his hair, so eventually it grew out to around his waist, and he kept that hairstyle ever since (he prefers wearing his hair in a ponytail or smth bc sensory issues when it comes to hair touching his skin)

a lot of tater's hcs infected my brain hehehehehe especially the tail and his hands still being what they were when they were cursed (also. paw beans. /vpos)

extremely hyperfixated on pokemon and owns a bajillion folders filled with cards worth a buttload of money, and a dozen plushies + figurines (projecting bc pokemon is one of my hyperfixes dont judge me) his fav gen is absolutely johto

his eyesight is pretty bad but like. not bad enough for him to be needing glasses (unlike a certain someone cough cough agoti)

speaking of said certain someone, he and agoti do each other's hair a lot simply because its really fun and provides some stimulation, and also because it helps tabi practice with self care and such

I'm HONORED you'd consider making a video about my chart! However, I had some problems with answering this as Tumblr would frequently delete all of my progress. I assume this is because of the answer simply being too long, which is why I'll try to tackle three layers at a time. I will add more parts of the explanation with every reblog. I'm truly sorry but this is the only option.

Just as a little refresher, here's the full chart! Explanations are under the cut because this is gonna be long >:)

Alright let's get into this!

Layers 1 - 3:

Layer 1

-Seven games:

In total there's seven games in the Mario and Luigi series, five original titles (Superstar Saga, Partners In Time, Bowser's Inside Story, Dream Team, Paper Jam) and two remakes (Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Junior's Journey)

-Striped socks:

On the original artworks for the Mario and Luigi games, Luigi is seen wearing striped socks, something unique to this series. However, the socks haven't shown up in official artwork since Dream Team.

-Luigi running gag:

In the Mario and Luigi games there exists a common running gag that consists of Luigi being underestimated or completely forgotten by other characters. They'll often praise Mario while then either insulting or downplaying Luigi.

-Giant battles:

In Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team there exists a form of battles known as "giant battles", during which Bowser (in BIS) and Luigi (in DT) turn massive to face off against giant enemies. The player has to flip their DS/3DS horizontally and dodge/fire off attacks by tapping the touch screen. In Paper Jam, there's also a form of battles called "papercraft battles" in which the player controls giant paper figurines, looking similar to the game's characters.

-Superstar Saga on Switch:

On February 8th 2023, Nintendo announced the port of several GBA games to Nintendo Switch Online, with Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga being one of them. Superstar Saga is currently the only title to be playable on Switch.

Layer 2

-Fawful in PIT:

In PIT there exists an optional area right underneath Peach's castle, in which you can observe a mysterious hooded figure. If you follow them with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, the person reveals himself to be Fawful, who quickly starts telling the babies about his plan for revenge. He starts getting more and more emotional during his speech, but tells the babies that there's no need to worry about him. The player can then pay Fawful with beans in exchange for rare badges. This scene foreshadowes the entirety of Bowser's Inside Story, in which Fawful takes over the Mushroom kingdom, making his plan reality.

-The blorbs:

The blorbs are an illness that plagues the Mushroom Kingdom during the events of Bowser's Inside Story. If a Toad consumes a so called "Blorb Mushroom" they will get infected with the disease, causing their bodies to grow large and round, immobilizing them. The blorbs play an important role in the plot, as the illness is an important part of Fawfuls plan to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. During the end of the game, Dr. Toadley manages to get rid the blorbs, using the Miracle Cure.

-Luisley:

Luisley is the name of a popular ship in the M&L community. It is based on the idea of Luigi and Prince Peasley being in a romantic relationship. The game itself seems to heavily support this idea, as Peasley is often seen paying special attention to Luigi, and Luigi blushing when meeting the prince. This Tumblr post explains it in more detail.

-Gold beanie:

In Superstar Saga and Dream Team you can encounter enemies called Beanies. They're basically just green beans with and evil grin and tiny feet, and they're pretty easy to take down. However there exists a rare golden variant of these enemies, which have a high chance of fleeing every turn. Upon beating one, the playing receives a high amount of experience points as a reward.

-Alphadream filing for bankruptcy:

On October 1st, 2019, Alphadream, primarily known for their work on the Mario and Luigi series, filed for bankruptcy. This was most likely due to high development costs and bad revenue in return. What got the studio into that position in the first place probably were the bad sales of Superstar Saga's remake and Bowser Junior's Journey failing horrendously.

-No PIT remake:

While Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story both received remakes, Partners In Time didn't get to enjoy that treatment. This was most likely due to Inside Story having better sales in comparison and Alphadream wanting to remake the most popular game in the series. However, them skipping the second installment and remaking the third game instead, still seems a bit odd.

-Shroobish:

Shroobish is the language spoken by the Shroobs in Partners In Time. It is written in a different alphabet and is totally indecipherable. The game does translate some words and sentences for the player, most notably the word destroy.

-Beanish and beanies are related species:

This is a popular theory created by fans that isn't mentioned in the game itself. The theory is based on the fact that Beanish and beanies share a lot of similarities, for example wide grins and green skin tone. The theory states that Beanish used to look similar to beanies, but evolved over time into what we know them as today.

Layer 3

-Cover art style change:

Superstar Saga as well as Partners in Time both have very detailed designs for their box art, while from Bowser's Inside Story onward the design is kept much simpler, just having a white background with the characters placed on top of it. It is important to note that the American version of Superstar Saga's remake uses the modern style, while the European version is a direct callback to the original's box art.

-Paper Jam hate:

Paper Jam is easily the least popular game in the series. This is due to the game's lack of original characters and story telling, which makes it stand out negatively when compared to the rest of the series. It had big potential, being a crossover with the Paper Mario series, but barley incorporated any of its elements, ending up as a rather boring M&L title, with Paper Mario as a playable character.

-Carrot minigame:

The carrot minigame is one of the many minigames present in Bowser's Inside Story and it's remake. Due to it's precise touch screen controls it is notoriously frustrating and difficult to beat, especially for younger players, slowly making it gain kind of a meme status amongst the community.

-Cacklebean:

Much like Luisley, Cacklebean is another popular ship in the M&L community, this time pairing Cackletta with Queen Bean. The idea is often backed up by Cackletta seemingly having a lot of knowledge about Beanbean Castle and its secrets, such as the security system surrounding the Beanstar. Queen Bean and the residents of the Beanbean Kingdom also never seem to mention Cackletta in any negative light whatsoever, often just insulting Fawful instead of her.

-Yoko Shimomura:

Yoko Shimomura is a Japanese composer primarily known for her work in video games, including the Mario and Luigi series. She also composed for games such as Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Starts and Kingdom Hearts.

-Headcanons:

This is a more community focused entry. Fans of the Mario and Luigi series often have a lot of different headcanons, some just adding more depth to certain characters while others change the story in its entirety. Since everyone's headcanons are different, everyone perceives the games differently and every fan stands out in their own unique and special way. Some popular headcanons include Cackletta being Fawfuls adoptive mother, Popple and Fawful being brothers or Peasley being gay.

-SSS difficulty spike:

The original version of Superstar Saga is kind of notorious for having a really weird difficulty spike with the game being pretty easy over all but then suddenly raising the difficulty out of nowhere before having it decrease again. Some examples of this are Wiggler and Trunkle going down in just a few hits while having much harder battles before and after them, Cackletta in Woohoo Hooniversity being a pretty tough challenge for this point of the game all while having the difficulty decrease again seconds later, and of course the final boss being absurdly hard and coming out of nowhere with the game refusing to prepare you for it at all.

-Popple is suffering from memory loss:

When encountering Popple in Dream Team, he does not recognize Mario and luigi at all, despite mentioning how he had trouble with people looking extremely similar back when he was still in the Beanbean Kingdom.

-Geno in the Fungitown arcade:

In Little Fungitown, the player will encounter Geno from Super Mario RPG while playing the Star 'Stache Smash minigame, where he will moderate the game and explain the rules. Geno is absent from the remake due to him not being owned by Nintendo.

Fujimori was not the sweets and chocolate type, that much was certain. So a bottle of motor oil would suffice as a gift of friendship. Somehow.

Being given such sweet delights for ulterior motives did not appease the mechanic, hence the bitter disgust towards today's holiday. Nearly every student at school fell under the manufactured love spell sucking up to their crushes by presenting lavish gifts or chocolates towards their potential partner. Either it ended in their favor, or it ended in heartbreak. Never neutral ground.

Just as the much taller senior turned on heel towards the nearest exit, in hopes of escaping before any lovesick idiot braved enough tenacity to approach her, someone stopped her. It was only Naoto. Someone more sensible enough to ignore the student body's current behavior. "Figures yer in a hurry tah scram outta 'ere as well. It's gettin' too mushy-gushy fer my likin' too." No doubt the infatuation lingering in the atmosphere tried its best to infect any and all victims who breathed its air. Not Rin, that's for certain. "C'mon, if ya want we can hide out at my place 'n let dis all blow ovah 'fore ya need ta get home."

But Naoto refused to move. Before making their daring getaway, she handed the older teen a present out from her bag. No chocolates, no heart-shaped papercraft, nothing remotely associated with the love-themed celebration. Just...a fresh canister of motor oil. Sealed, brand new, presented only for Rin.

Was this a Valentine from Naoto to her? Could this even be considered a Valentine gift? It didn't fall under the criteria. The brand wasn't difficult to find in stores, either. What was the point of giving something so commonplace and easily purchasable to her?

"...uhhhhhhh..." For a moment, words failed to form anything resembling Rin's appreciation. A gift this obscure wouldn't come with extra strings attached. That's not how the detective functioned. Yet on the other hand, she never denied more materials for the shop. "...ya know, I wanna ask ya if you've been keepin' dis in yer lockah fer th' whole day. Cuz den, dat smell is gonna be stuck clingin' tah th' metal inside yer lockah fer a while." Or ask how it fit inside her small bag, as well.

"Yer lose, I guess." Her win, though. She scored free motor oil. "Bettah get used tah th' poignant smell of a greasy, dirty car shop when ya go tah get yer books every mornin'."

Happy STS! I’m currently obsessing over this myself, so I’ve decided to infect others with it too~ In a Coffeeshop AU of A Tangled Knot of Gold, what would the characters look like? Who’s the employee(s) vs patron(s)? Favorite drink order? Is it a massive chain store or a little local establishment? Go wild!

Oooooh this is from last week and I know you're skipping this week, but I am SO excited to answer! I think that Soter would be the shift manager of a small local coffee shop and bakery. Zie doesn't own it, but spends a great deal of time and effort on it. Zie makes seasonal bulletin boards every month and changes out the menu to match. Zie knows all of the regular customers by name and their usual orders and always has a smile and a general bright energy that keeps people happy and coming back. The coffee is good and so are the donuts/muffins, but they might not otherwise be quite worth the price.

Tlapil is still Soter's cousin and spends a great deal of time in the coffee shop. Tlapil is mostly nonverbal and has AAC on eson phone, but prefers eson deck of communication cards because it's nice to have something so concrete and real. They can get plenty complex when eson arranges them into sentences. But mostly eson is left alone to journal and make papercrafts, sometimes read a book, until Soter finishes zir shift.

Tlapil's slime friend (SF for now because she doesn't have a name yet) in human form is the epitome of artistic clumsiness. She has big bushy curly hair and is very nice and helpful but struggles to learn all the buttons and orders and do them fast enough. They meet the first time when SF asks what Tlapil is working on and is not only patient with eson answer, but fascinated by the cards. They meet the second time when Tlapil takes pity on her and shows her how to do everything--which eso knows because eso spends so much time in the shop observing Soter. After that they're friends and chat on SF's breaks or meet before her shift to hang out at the game store and arcade down the street. There would be a whole chapter dedicated to them visiting the waterpark on SF's day off.

There aren't a whole lot of other characters developed for this story yet, but definitely halfway through it would be revealed that the owner of the cafe is a known character with some kind of tension with Soter. There's a sideplot where Soter's two middle siblings run off and save the world through shenanigans, but only ever in the background.

1. are you named after anyone?

Nope!  Pretty sure my mother was just on a mythology kick for a while and thought “Ambrosia” sounded unique. 

2. when was the last time you cried?

Real talk, it was...last Sunday night.  I’d spent the past two weeks fighting off a particularly nasty cold and eye infection, then that Saturday I’d gotten a terrible bout of food poisoning, and by Sunday I was just.  so done.  I had no cope left.  It was pretty rough.

3. do you have any kids?

Nope!  I’m eminently grateful to live in a time and a country with widely accessible birth control.

4. do you use sarcasm a lot?

Not currently.  I used to, but I tended to use it as a means of putting barriers between myself and other people, and I’ve been trying to be better about that over the past several years.

5. what’s the first thing you notice about people?

Their passion!  There’s almost always something people just light up to talk about—and most people will tell you what it is pretty quickly if you listen to them.

6. what’s your eye colour?

Greeny-brown.  Which always struck me as odd because green looks terrible on me as a clothing color.

7. scary movie or happy endings?

It depends.  I much prefer stories with satisfying endings—they don’t need to  be happy per se (and in the case of a good tragedy, they’re not going to be, that’s the point!),  but if it feels like a logical resolution of the character and plot elements introduced, that’s all good.  I don’t have an issue with scary movies per se, but horror isn’t really my bag because I’m not a huge fan of the “pin down the characters and watch them struggle futilely against forces they don’t  understand” genre—there needs to be at least some hope for a better outcome.

8. any special talents?

Define ‘special’?  I write pretty decently, I can do a  basic critical analysis of a poem or story in ten minutes or less, I can help you unkink the knot in your neck, I can sing (when I’m not recovering from a cold) and play guitar, I’m pretty good at papercrafting, I can say a few phrases in basic Swedish, I can do a headstand, I can mix a tasty cocktail, I can jump back from an arm balance into a plank position, I can teach an excellent yoga class, I can make a killer cherry pie, I can dance like nobody’s watching...

9. where were you born?

Alaska, baby!

10. what are your hobbies?

Primarily music and writing at the moment.  I’ve had many others, including sewing and scrapbooking and embroidery and knitting and jewelry-making and beadwork and mixology and ceramics, but this is what I have the time and space for in my life right now.

11. do you have any pets?

Four cats!  A couple of them are getting up there in years, and one has kidney problems, but they’re still kicking!

12. what sports do you play/have played?

Not a lot of organized ones.  I did gymnastics in my tween/early teen years, but then puberty hit and I grew hips, haha.  I’ve practiced yoga on and off for a couple of decades now.  I did a Bike MS ride last fall after training all summer.  I love swimming.

13. how tall are you?

5′8″/172cm.  A full four inches taller than average for my demographic!  I was surprised to find that out, I’d assumed I was maybe one or two above average.  I guess I hang out with a lot of tall people, haha.

14. dream job?

Anywhere I can strike that tricky balance of “helping other people”, ‘learning new things” and “not twigging out constantly with anxiety”.  it’s a perpetually evolving cycle.

15. favourite subject in school?

I loved music and theatre, but also really enjoyed English and psychology classes.  Anything having to do with the human condition—the best history and economics classes I ever took were similarly based in human nature.

Im sorry its been a while gang. Been sick and my second surgery went well. Im happy to report my left side feels great. Im looser then I've been in a long while. [Review] Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. (3DS)

Let’s make this quick so I don’t get too mad. Paper Jam Bros. has all the wit and engaging battle mechanics of previous Mario & Luigi games, but it has had the soul sucked out of it. It squanders the potential of a Paper crossover and exemplifies the blandness of what the Mario series has become.

I think I’ve said it all in the intro. I liked Dream Team Bros. in retrospect, and this is just like it. It’s just that the curse that befell the Paper Mario series since Sticker Star has infected the rest of the RPG branch; instead of being full of weird and wonderful NPCs and enemies, Toads and Goombas proliferate. Starlow (and I always liked her) is the sole remaining link to when the Mario spinoffs used to be allowed to have fun original characters.

The structure is familiar; a slow ramp-up, some backtracking, new combo attacks unlocked. But without any semblance of interesting plot (it’s literally “two Bowsers kidnap two Peaches”, and all the self-aware lampshade hanging in the world doesn’t save you from the sheer apathy of using nothing but this tired cliche), there are no stakes. I continued playing to read the occasional amusing piece of dialogue, or see the next Bros attack, or learn the next enemy’s pattern.

Having Paper Mario as a party member is a fun wrinkle in the same way the babies added to the proceedings in Partners in Time. It leads to some silly and bombastic paper-based actions in-battle and in the overworld. A new feature is the battle cards, replacing the badge system from previous games; it’s an improvement as it’s more customisable and usable. They’ve also replaced Giant Battles with light action/strategy segments with giant papercrafts; I found these tedious in the extreme. The mandatory Paper Toad hunts that precede them are an occasionally fun change of pace but are on other occasions also beset by tedium.

I appreciated quality of life touches... especially the fast forward button. I just wish it was even faster, and usable in more screens, just so I could be done quicker. As it is it will only advance cutscenes but dialogue also requires player input.

This game just makes me sad to think about. When even the RPGs, which used to be full of such colourful whimsy, are so harshly cut down to the bare “New Super Mario Bros.” skeleton in their world and aesthetics, it’s like Nintendo is begging me to not care. I guess I’m the sucker for buying this game new. Sorry for being such a downer folks! At least AlphaDream’s signature graphical style and animation quality are here... Sigh.

Standing in the harbour waiting to have dinner. I took a picture of this incredible person who I am lucky to have in my life. This year has been hard, if started with a mental health breakdown, continued through a new project (matchboxes) as a way to process, then saw some growth and movement as the world began to make sense again. In June it all started to tilt but it wasn’t just tilting for me, it was tilting for everyone. Memories of 2014 came back as we listened to the roar of a million voices outside our home, then a little while later, 2 million. I couldn’t be prouder to be a Hong Konger when people began to stand up and attempted to create a world where their leaders were accountable or at least engaged. When faced with a choice, those leaders chose to turn away. Instead, chaos was encouraged and brutality became our norm. Now on the cusp of a new decade, I make choices about what colour I should wear by who I will meet up with in my day. I have conversations with friends on fire ravaged Australia about the best type of filter to use for your gas mask. As we counted down the new year in 2019 I had no idea that the world was going to be so very different for me a year later and I wonder and at times dread what is coming in the next 12 months.
