Lugo, Spain (No. 4)
During the Middle Ages Lugo, like Santiago de Compostela, was a center of pilgrimage, because the cathedral had the special privilege, which it still retains today, of exposing to the public the consecrated host twenty-four hours a day. In the 18th century Lugo was granted the privilege of organizing the fairs of St. Froilán. During the Modern Age, Lugo had a certain supremacy, although other nearby towns such as Mondoñedo or Ribadeo disputed it. It was not until the division of the state into provinces in 1833 and the creation of provincial governments that Lugo has become the most important town in the province of Lugo, because of its capital status. This rise has been bolstered by the arrival of the first railroad to the city in 1875.
During the 20th century the city continued to grow as the administration and services center of the province. In 1936, when the Civil War broke out, the city became quickly under the Nationalists control. In the 1970s the city undertook important reforms, like the development of the Ceao Industrial Area (1979) and the complete restoration of the Roman walls.
Infanta Elena, the elder daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain and fourth in the line of succession to the Spanish throne, has been duchess of Lugo since 1995.
In 2000, the recognition of the Roman walls on UNESCO's World Heritage Site was an important event in the city.

Don Jaime de Marichalar y Sáenz de Tejada
Don Jaime de Marichalar y Sáenz de Tejada is the former husband of the Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo, the eldest daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain.
Of Navarran Basque Carlist aristocracy, Jaime is the third of the five sons and one daughter of Amalio de Marichalar y Bruguera, 8th Count of Ripalda and his wife María de la Concepción Sáenz de Tejada y Fernández de Boadilla
He studied at the Jesuit schools in Burgos, San Estanislao de Kostka in Madrid and Yago School in Dublin, Ireland. His higher education focused on Economics and he specialized in Business Management and Marketing, although he never obtained a degree. In 1986, he gained practical work experience in a number of financial businesses in Paris, where he lived as a bachelor and during the early years of his marriage.
After a number of years working in the international financial markets sector, in January 1998 he was appointed Managing Director's Senior Advisor for Crédit Suisse First Boston in Madrid. He is also an advisor of Sociedad General Inmobiliaria. He was President of the Winterthur Foundation, which promotes cultural activities. On 21 November 2008 he left as President of the AXA Foundation, the former Winterthur Foundation.
Since 1995, he has been a member of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla (Royal Cavalry Armory of Seville), a noble guild created in 1670. In 2001, he suffered a stroke, and largely retired from public life. He officially left the Spanish Royal Family, following his 2010 divorce.
In 1987, Jaime de Marichalar met his future wife, Infanta Elena of Spain, while she was studying French literature in Paris and he was working there. On 18 March 1995, they married in Seville Cathedral, Seville. The couple has two children: Felipe (born 17 July 1998) and Victoria (born 9 September 2000). The couple lived initially in Paris and then from 1998 in the Salamanca district of Madrid.
On 13 November 2007 it was announced that he and his wife had separated. In November 2009, the Spanish media announced that Jaime de Marichalar and Infanta Elena would immediately divorce, although a rumour to that effect had been circulating for a year before the announcement was made.Their divorce papers were signed on 25 November 2009.The couple got divorced in December 2009. On 21 January 2010 the divorce was registered at the Civil Registry of the Spanish Royal Family. It was officially announced on 9 February 2010 that, following his divorce, Jaime de Marichalar would no longer be permitted to use his former wife's ducal title or the styles Grandee of Spain and Excellency, and that he is no longer considered to be an official member of the Spanish Royal Family

#18march1995 #royalwedding Infanta Elena married Jaime de Marichalar, son of the Count and Countess of Ripalda. Elena’s gown for her Spanish wedding extravaganza was from Spanish couturier Petro Valverde: 48 meters of silk organza, a square neckline, three-quarter sleeves , and a multi-layer skirt. Thick silk hand embroidery highlighted the neckline, sleeves, and waist. The back of the gown featured a delicate bustle and a detachable 4 meter train. The veil, complete with matching embroidered trim around the edges, included a voluminous top veil with a blusher to cover the bride’s face on the way to the altar and a longer detachable veil to rest on the length of the train. It was a lot of veil. She wore a tiara, along with pearl earrings and a matching bracelet which were a gift from the Countess of Barcelona, paternal grandmother of her new husband’s family. Elena, known with her husband as the Duke and Duchess of Lugo. 👸🏼👰🏼 🤵🤴🏼 👩🏼‍💻 #InfantaElena #jaimedemarichalar #petrovalverde #spanishroyalfamily #royalfamily #weddingday #weddingdress #weddinggown #spain🇪🇸 #italianblogger #instastoria #accadeoggi #18marzo #glamourcaprices #lifestyleblogger
