Domestic Violence Shelter Donate Clothes
Domestic violence shelters play a crucial role in providing safety and support for individuals escaping abusive situations. These facilities are not just temporary refuges; they aim to help survivors rebuild their lives. One of the most pressing needs in these shelters is clothing.
>>>>>Domestic Violence Shelter Donate Clothes<<<<<
Many people arrive at shelters with little more than what they’re wearing, making access to clean, appropriate clothing essential. Donating clothes offers practical assistance and helps survivors regain dignity during a challenging transition period. The right attire can boost confidence as they navigate job searches or attend interviews.
Shelters often require various types of clothing for different ages and genders, including professional outfits, casual wear, undergarments, shoes, and outerwear suitable for seasonal changes. Items like pajamas are also appreciated since comfort is vital during recovery.
When considering donating clothes to domestic violence shelters, remember that your contributions can have a profound impact on someone’s journey toward healing and independence. Every garment you give serves as a symbol of hope and community support.
What Is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in intimate relationships. It can manifest physically, emotionally, or psychologically. This type of violence often occurs between partners, whether they are married, living together, or dating.
The abuse can take many forms. Physical abuse includes hitting, slapping, or any other form of physical harm. Emotional and psychological abuse involves manipulation, coercion, intimidation, and threats that undermine an individual’s self-worth.
Victims may not always recognize the signs of domestic violence. Many believe it is normal to experience conflicts in relationships without realizing those conflicts have escalated into harmful behaviors.
Tragically, the impact extends beyond immediate injuries; survivors may face long-term mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Recognizing domestic violence is crucial for seeking help and breaking free from harmful situations. Understanding its complexities helps communities address the issue more effectively.
Types of clothing are needed at domestic violence shelters
Domestic violence shelters provide vital support for individuals escaping abusive situations. Some types of clothing that are needed at domestic violence shelters include:
1. Comfortable and practical everyday clothing: This includes items such as t-shirts, jeans, leggings, sweatshirts, and pajamas. These clothes should be in good condition and appropriate for different weather conditions.
2. Undergarments: New underwear and bras in a range of sizes are always in demand at shelters. Socks and thermal wear can also be helpful during colder months.
3. Professional attire: Many survivors of domestic violence may need to attend job interviews or go to work while staying at a shelter. Donations of professional attire such as dress shirts, skirts, pants, blouses, and shoes can help them feel confident and make a good impression.
4. Children's clothing: Domestic violence shelters often have families with children staying at their facilities. Donations of new or gently used children's clothing, including shirts, pants, jackets, shoes, and pajamas are always needed.
5. Baby supplies: Shelters may also provide support for infants and toddlers whose families are fleeing abuse. Donations of items such as diapers, wipes, baby formula or food, bottles, bibs, onesies, and sleepers are greatly appreciated.
6. Outerwear: During colder months, shelters may need donations of warm outerwear such as coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves for both adults and children.
7. Special-sized clothing: Shelters often receive survivors of domestic violence who come from diverse backgrounds and have different body types. Donations of plus-size or petite clothing can help ensure that all individuals at the shelter have access to appropriate clothing.
8. Maternity clothes: Domestic violence shelters may also support pregnant women who are fleeing abuse. Donations of maternity clothes such as dresses, tops, pants, and bras can make a big difference in their comfort and well-being.
9. Clothing for special occasions: Survivors of domestic violence may miss out on important events like holidays or birthdays due to their situation. Donations of festive or formal wear can help them feel connected to these traditions and celebrate with their families at the shelter.
10. Toiletries and personal hygiene products: In addition to clothing, shelters also need donations of toiletries and personal hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and shaving supplies.
It's always best to check with a specific shelter about their current needs before donating any items. In some cases, shelters may have specific guidelines or restrictions on the types of clothing they can accept. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated as they allow shelters to purchase specific items that are needed for their residents.
Organization that accept domestic violence shelters
Several organizations play a vital role in supporting domestic violence shelters by accepting donations.
1. National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV): This organization is dedicated to supporting domestic violence shelters and raising awareness about the issue. They accept monetary donations, as well as in-kind donations such as clothing, household items, and toiletries for survivors in shelters.
2. The Allstate Foundation: This foundation partners with local domestic violence organizations and accepts monetary donations to support their work. They also have a program called "Purple Purse" which raises funds for domestic violence shelters through the sale of a designer handbag collection.
3. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV): This organization works to prevent and end domestic violence through education, advocacy, and support for survivors. They accept monetary donations, as well as donations of clothes, toiletries, and other essential items for survivors in shelters.
4. The Salvation Army: This organization operates numerous domestic violence shelters across the country and accepts monetary donations to support their services. They also accept donations of clothing, furniture, appliances, and other household items that can be used by survivors starting over after leaving an abusive relationship.
5. Women Against Abuse: This Philadelphia-based organization provides emergency shelter and supportive services to survivors of domestic violence. They accept financial contributions as well as donations of new or gently used clothing, household items, and gift cards.
6. The Joyful Heart Foundation: This organization works to empower survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault by providing support and resources. They accept monetary donations to fund their programs, as well as in-kind donations of clothing, toiletries, and other essential items for survivors in shelters.
7. DomesticShelters.org: This online resource connects individuals with local domestic violence shelters and provides information on how to support them. They also have a donation page where users can make monetary contributions to their featured shelters.
8. Local domestic violence shelters: Many domestic violence shelters have their own websites or social media pages where they list specific needs and accept donations directly. It is best to contact the shelter directly to inquire about their current needs and donation process.
In addition to these organizations, many churches, community groups, and businesses also support domestic violence shelters through donation drives and fundraising events.
How to Donate Clothes to Domestic violence shelters?
Donating clothes to domestic violence shelters is a heartfelt way to support individuals in need.
Step 1: Research local domestic violence shelters
The first step is to research and find local domestic violence shelters in your area. You can do this by searching online or contacting your local government agencies for a list of shelters. Make sure to check their donation policies and guidelines before proceeding.
Step 2: Sort through your clothes
Go through your wardrobe and select gently used clothes that you no longer wear or need. Check for any damages or stains - shelters usually only accept clean and wearable clothing items. Remember, these individuals have often left their homes with nothing, so try to donate items that are suitable for all seasons.
Step 3: Contact the shelter
Reach out to the domestic violence shelter you have chosen and let them know you would like to make a clothing donation. Ask about their specific needs and any restrictions they may have. Some shelters may only accept certain sizes or types of clothing.
Step 4: Drop off or arrange pick-up
Once you have confirmed the shelter's donation policy, drop off your clothes at the designated location or schedule a pick-up if available. Be sure to ask for a receipt if you plan on claiming the donation on your taxes.
Bonus tip:
In addition to clothing, consider donating other essential items such as toiletries, blankets, and non-perishable food items to the shelter. These items are always in high demand and will be greatly appreciated by those in need.
Drop off locations
Finding the right drop-off locations for your donations can make a big difference. Many domestic violence shelters are eager to receive clothing, but they may not always publicize their specific needs or locations. Start by searching online for local shelters in your area that accept clothing donations.
Community centers often act as collection points. They sometimes partner with shelters to streamline donation processes. Local churches and non-profit organizations might also have established relationships with these facilities, making them ideal drop-off spots.
Check social media pages of nearby shelters; they frequently share updates on current needs and donation drives. Engaging directly through comments or messages can provide clarity about where to donate clothes effectively.
Don’t hesitate to call ahead before visiting a location. This ensures you know what items are needed and confirms whether the shelter is currently accepting clothing donations at that time.
Conclusion
Supporting domestic violence shelters by donating clothes can make a significant difference in the lives of those seeking refuge. Individuals escaping abusive situations often leave with little more than the clothes on their backs. Providing them with suitable clothing not only meets a basic need but also offers a sense of dignity and comfort during an incredibly challenging time.
Whether you have gently used items or are looking to purchase new essentials, your contributions will help create a welcoming environment for survivors. Many organizations appreciate donations year-round, so it’s easy to find opportunities to give back.
By following simple steps to donate clothes and being mindful of the types needed, anyone can contribute positively to this cause. Remember that every piece counts; together, we can support these individuals as they rebuild their lives free from violence. Taking action today means paving the way for hope tomorrow.

Why Choose an Enphase Microinverter?
The inverter is the point at which DC electricity produced by your solar panels is converted into grid-compatible AC power. It’s important to find the right inverter for your system to ensure optimal performance.
Enphase microinverters are known for their reliability, quality, and advanced monitoring that gives you back control of your solar system. They also offer great benefits for roof sections with multiple aspects or shading issues.
Reliability
Enphase microinverters are extremely reliable and come with an unmatched 25-year product warranty. This enphase microinverter is due to the quality of the manufacturing process and rigorous testing standards. In addition, microinverters do not generate DC arc faults like traditional string inverter systems, which can cause a fire hazard.
Typical failure curve
All products have a characteristic curve that represents their rate of failure over time. This is referred to as the bathtub curve. Infant mortality failures are the first stage of this curve, and these occur within a short period after installation. Once the infant mortality failures have passed, wear-out is the next phase.
The new IQ 8 series is designed to be paired with Enphase’s battery storage solution and can work in both grid-tied and off-grid modes. It uses the latest 55nm technology and has advanced features that help maximize energy savings. These include grid-forming capability that can assist with a grid outage, and faster response times that alleviate constraints on battery sizing.
Safety
A microinverter system is a great solution for solar energy systems that are shaded or have low irradiance. Its improved efficiencies and long warranty period make it an excellent choice for residential or commercial solar panel installations. It also provides a high ROI for installers with ideal site conditions.
Enphase microinverters are designed to withstand a variety of environmental conditions. The microinverters are subjected to two tests to determine MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure). The first test is a damp heat test that lasts 1500 hours and exposes the inverters to 85degC/85% RH. The second test is a thermal cycle test that lasts 600 cycles.
The microinverters are built with durable components and are backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty. They are also safe to operate during a power outage, unlike string inverters. This makes them a good choice for homeowners looking to reduce their energy costs. The microinverter’s monitoring capabilities also help consumers understand their energy usage and monitor their solar panels from anywhere.
Flexibility
Microinverters are expandable, allowing you to design systems that fit your energy needs and budget today. They also allow you to add a solar battery or increase your panel count in the future without the cost and hassle of replacing existing modules. They tolerate shading better than string inverters and don’t have a single point of failure like a central inverter.
The all-AC design of Enphase IQ microinverters eliminates the risk of exposing installers, homeowners, and first responders to dangerous high-voltage DC electricity. IQ microinverters also feature integrated rapid shutdown functionality, ensuring that solar power production is shut down quickly and safely during grid failures or home electrical work and maintenance.
The IQ8 series microinverter is designed to be modular and scalable, providing you with the flexibility you need for your solar installation. Its two-wire trunk cable allows for quick installation and can be used in portrait or landscape module orientations. In addition, IQ8 microinverters are compatible with Enphase energy storage solutions, making them a great choice for homeowners who want to install a hybrid system.
Cost
Enphase microinverters have a lower balance of system cost than regular string inverter systems. They also feature a simpler installation process. Because they don’t require DC cabling, DC Array Junction Boxes or a DC SPD, they can be installed quickly and efficiently. Moreover, the new IQ 8 Series microinverters are designed to work seamlessly with Enphase’s IQ Battery and IQ Gateway.
They are able to do this by using advanced Tesla battery. This enables them to perform load-following in both grid-tied and off-grid modes. The IQ8 also features a proprietary application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC).
Another benefit of Enphase’s microinverters is that they allow users to monitor their home energy production directly from their smartphone. This allows them to decide how much solar energy they want to use, store or sell back to the grid. Enphase also makes solar batteries, communication gateways and installer tools and accessories. Their facility in Arlington, South Carolina is open to the public for tours.

Staying warm tips for people in inconvenient situations!
Source: I’m half Scandinavian, I’ve spent many winters in -42 degrees weather (F and C temperature scales meet around -42 degrees), it gets cold as balls here, and I’m a horse person so knowing how to keep vulnerable creatures warm in really freaking cold weather is a necessity.
If you have a baby:
Use a permanent sling to affix the baby to your chest. Keep that sucker real close when it’s too cold. Babies are calmed by colder weather, but keep an eye out for infants that are too lethargic and won’t wake up. The closer an infant is to your skin, the warmer it stays, and the warmer you’ll stay for sharing body heat.
Babies don’t need to be bathed that often or that long in freezing weather. If you absolutely must, bathe an infant in warm, not hot water, and only for ~10 minutes, then immediately dry with warm, clean towels, and put on dry clothes.
Prioritize bundling up feet, hands, and face (the extremities). This is where infants lose heat first. In freezing weather, start with a skin-tight layer, like leggings and a onesie/bodysuit, then add socks, gloves, hats, and more layers. Warm boots, gloves/mittens, and beanies/caps will go a long way. The general rule is that however many layers you’re wearing, add one for the baby.
Infants may become overheated in too many layers, even if it’s freezing. Watch out for red faces and more irritability than usual; if this happens, remove a layer and re-evaluate.
If an infant has skin that is cold to the touch, their extremities are cold, red, or hard to the touch, they are lethargic and unresponsive, or they are particularly teary-eyed for no reason, this is a problem. DO NOT RUB COLD SKIN TO WARM THE INFANT UP; THIS WILL DAMAGE FREEZING SKIN EVEN MORE. Use a warm washcloth and try not to rub too much. Use small, slow motions, and mostly gentle compression. If you are completely unable wake an infant, seek immediate medical attention.
If you have younger children:
Many of the same rules apply as when you have a baby. They should wear more layers than an adult human. They will get cold faster. Younger children have less body fat and more surface area than an adult, and will get cold a lot faster than an average-sized adult will. Check their extremities, feel their skin for whether it’s cold to the touch, ask them how they’re feeling, and gauge their alertness and mental status. A good way to check alertness is age-appropriate mental math. This is also a good method to make sure your child wakes up in the morning without going right back to sleep. A lethargic, drowsy, or unresponsive child is too cold.
You can rub a child who’s too warm; their skin is much stronger than that of an infant. Refrain from rubbing if their skin is freezing to the touch or hard, use the same warm washcloth method. Children don’t have to bathe that often if it’s unbearably cold for a week or two.
Now is not the time for gender roles or age-appropriate wear! Children will be warmest in tights (i.e. those usually worn by young girls), and the tallest socks you have, preferably several layers of socks and underclothes, and many layers of tank top + long sleeve + t-shirt + jacket + coat. Keep children close to you when possible to share body heat, and monitor them if you ever start feeling cold, because they’re almost always colder.
If you have an elderly person living with you:
Same protocol as babies: however many layers you have, plus one. Elderly people get colder more easily. Help them to wear many layers (that thermal underwear/several sets of pantyhose/velour tracksuit/many coats combo does wonders), make sure their hands, feet, and face are well protected from the cold, and try to ensure that someone else is physically close to them to monitor them and share body heat. You can’t be too cuddly when it’s freezing. Also monitor for overheating, just like with infants.
Scattering clothes all over the floor is great insulation, but if you live with an elderly person who may trip, skip this step. Elderly folks should still move around in the cold to keep them going and keep them producing warmth. Take walks with them, even around a single room, and make sure they can’t trip over anything. If you need the extra layer of insulation, flannel bedsheets (or anything but silk) will do good, without causing such a tripping hazard.
Make sure elderly people on medication continue to take it. If you’re worried about freezing weather, check their supply and make sure you have enough to last you through at least one wave of cold. Be aware of existing health conditions so you can know how the cold weather may affect them specifically.
If someone is compromised in health:
Meds, meds, meds. You must have enough medication to last at least one wave of cold, and any other things needed to maintain health. You really don’t want to be taking trips to the ER when it’s that cold.
If someone has paralyzed limbs, KEEP THEM WARM. Frostbite and other such things can still screw you over big-time, even if it’s on parts of your body that you can’t feel. Make sure to check the extremities and immobile parts of anyone with such conditions regularly to make sure they’re staying warm.
If someone is not physically ill, but takes medications, be sure to check how those medications can affect body temperature regulation. Beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers slow the body’s responses and make one more susceptible to cold. These medications are usually prescribed for blood pressure regulation, and for people with certain cardiovascular conditions.
Depressant drugs will make you colder. DON’T DRINK ALCOHOL TO WARM UP. Alcohol will make the cold worse, not better, because it depresses your body’s response. Other depressant drugs have the same effect: mind people on anti-convulsants, barbituates, sleeping medications, Ativan, Xanax, Valium, Phenobarbital, etc. Look things up before you learn the hard way what they do. The cold is not the time to do drugs, if that’s the kind of thing you’re into. For those on these drugs for prescriptions, keep a closer eye on them, and check their extremities and responses regularly. Excessive lethargy/drowsiness in anyone is a sign of the cold getting to them.
Anyone sick gets cold easier than usual, and gets more sick much easier than usual. Keep a close eye on those compromised in health, because they’ll usually be among the first to have problems.
If you have pets:
Mammals (dogs, cats, horses) need extra warmth. Coats. Layers. Your own socks. A blanket. Larger animals will stay warmer longer. Cats are especially susceptible to cold, so make them cuddle sometimes even if they don’t want to (purring will help them stay warm, though), and any animals should not get wet when it’s that cold. When your dog(s) has/have to go out, put socks on their feet, then if it’s wet or snowy outside plastic-wrap them, rubber-band plastic baggies to their feet, whatever you can to provide a waterproof layer between the ground and their socks. Wet fabric will make a mammal even colder. Duct-tape on top of socks is a good solution, too. If your animals are friends with each other, they may as well huddle for warmth. Throw a blanket over your pets, if they’ll tolerate it, in extreme cold.
Rodents and rabbits don’t take cold well at all, worse than many other mammals. Take care to keep them bundled up and warm, even if they have to wear your socks and hats and old t-shirts to do it. If your pets aren’t cuddly, well, they may have to learn.
Reptiles (snakes, lizards, etc.) will get cold very fast, especially without heating lamps or other measures. “There’s a snake in my boobs” is no longer just a meme. If your snake is cuddly, keep it touching your skin. If not, allow yourself a layer or two between you and an animal that may bite you, but keep reptiles close.
Many amphibians are OK in freezing weather, as many of them hibernate. Frogs can survive in weather down to 19 degrees F for weeks, but if it dips below that, give them some help and do your best to keep them warm enough without making them too warm. Hibernating animals should hibernate; it’s how they keep warm in the cold and it’s a necessary process.
Birds get cold. Huddle, give them a sock with some holes in it as a sweater, check them to make sure they’re warm enough. Parrots, parakeets, and many songbirds are especially susceptible to the cold.
Whichever animal you have, research how well it tolerates the cold to see how much you need to worry. Always check your pets for signs of being too cold or too warm, in any kind of weather, as pets may overheat when it’s cold if you’ve helped them too much. For rarer pets, research thoroughly how to keep them in colder weather. If you worry that your pet won’t survive or won’t do well with you, consider speaking to a friend or someone you trust who will have a warm enough climate/indoor heating to watch your pet before cold may strike. Better safe and a little lonely than sorry.
When things are heading south, prioritize the baby, then the elderly person, then the sick person, then the young child, then the teens and adults. Adjust as needed, and place pets as they go, because they can also be young, elderly, or ill. People with more body fat will stay warmer.
General tips for warmth:
Gender roles are abandoned when it’s that cold. Women’s tights are a godsend. Wear as many as you can layer, especially the ones marked “thermal”. Shapewear will help immensely. Silk won’t do much; prioritize cotton and wool.
WOOL IS SO GODDAMN WARM. There’s warmth, and there’s wearing multiple layers of wool. People in history didn’t have central heating, but they did have woolen undergarments.
Crappy, non-breathable fabrics will do a lot to retain body heat. Remember what was stifling in the summer? Layer with it. Plastic-y, synthetic fabrics suck for athletic wear, but they’re great for keeping you warm when all else fails. And if all else really fails, and you’re in immediate danger of frostbite, duct-tape and plastic wrap.
Try not to sweat. The more you work out, the more heat you’ll produce, but the more you’ll perspire. Moisture is the enemy of staying warm. Wet will make cold much worse, so if you find yourself working hard enough to sweat, wipe it away with warm, or at least dry, fabrics and try to sweat as little as possible. You don’t want to keep cool when you’re trying to stave off frostbite.
Wear a mask, especially close-fitting ones made of fabric, but even disposable will do. Remember how unpleasant they are in hot weather? Masks provide another barrier against the cold, and they protect some of the most sensitive parts of your body. Your own warm breath will do a lot to warm your face when it’s reflected back onto you. Don’t be afraid to breathe onto your loved ones in close quarters either. Or wear multiple masks at once. As long as you can breathe, you can get warmer.
Cuddle puddle for ultimate warmth, especially while sleeping. More warm bodies means more warmth. Carefully place those most vulnerable nearer to the center, being careful not to crush anyone. Babies, children, older folks, and health-compromised folks will do best sandwiched between two people, if possible. If not, prioritize to put the most vulnerable between the less vulnerable.
If you have a working fireplace, use it. Remember that only dry wood will burn. Stock up on kindling (I suggest newspaper to get the flame started and a lot of twigs/sticks/dry leaves), then mid-sized logs. Heavier wood contains more to burn, but should be added once the fire is well and going. Greener wood won’t burn as well. Very lightweight logs, regardless of size, will be good to start, but won’t offer much time. Keeping a fire going will require a lot less energy than stopping and starting it, so keep an eye on it. This is also a good way to heat food, to get two birds with one stone. Warm food will always do more in the cold than room temperature or cold food. Stock up on wood before the cold hits, and keep it in a dry place, even if it’s not your warm room. Wet wood will offer nothing when it’s already cold.
If you own tarp, you own free insulation. That stuff’s insane. Throw it between a couple blankets, or on the floor, or against the window.
Candles. And good-quality lighters. A solid tri-wick, long-lasting candle can smell as awful Joann will sell and still keep several people warm in sub-zero temperatures.
That’s all I can think of now, but feel free to add on. Stay warm, and stay safe.

Twin Snowflakes pt21:Ice Breaker?
[Part 20 here! <-]
Snow, as far as the eye can see. Summer has had enough of snow. A terrible thing considering her move sets and living situation. The frozen rain gently fell down into a meadow of pure white, blanketing any beautiful flowers that could be right below the surface. Her body fell flat, landing stomach down. Cold, but not too cold; the usual case for her mind every time she ended up here. Why was she here? Her heater was definitely on before she laid down. Wool socks kept her toes nice and toasty, and windows were shut tight. She had triple checked. Perhaps this was an actual dream this time instead of an unpleasant visit from the worst guest ever. Summer didn’t want to deal with Shiva. She didn’t want to do anything really. Her body felt...tired. Eyelids were heavy and energy was spent. What was this?
The crunch of snow being crushed broke the silence of the meadow and obstructed Summer’s already limited view. Her head lifted up to see the last person she wanted to. Now she really hoped this wasn’t a dream. It would be dreadful for Shiva to take those away from her too.
The problematic entity laid down on her side. Her hand reached out to brush away a few strands of Summer’s hair to get a better look. “Tired?” Shiva asked, rubbing the girl’s cheek. “I’d be too, faking joy in my life. How long do you think you’ll last? You feel it right, time slipping past you? Days, hours, minutes, seconds; how much more time can you spend failing at everything? Aren’t you tired of it all?”
Summer didn’t respond. Summer couldn’t respond. All she could do was stare into Shiva’s alluring gaze and weep, motionless.
“Awww poor thing.” Shiva rolled Summer over on her back, then straddled her. Her left hand kept rubbing Summer’s pale cheek. Shiva looked down at the girl with a smile that while small, was still oozing with a smug attitude despite her calm voice. “Just close your eyes and surrender to me. What else can you do? You can’t beat me, out think me, or do anything that matters when it counts the most. Do you enjoy it, burdening everyone? How much longer will you hold Nick back?”
Summer’s lip began to quiver. The warmth of her tears was the only source of heat filling her. They began to run faster and faster down the side of her face, only to meet Shiva’s gentle hands rubbing them away. Those same hands drifted lower down and stopped on Summer’s eck. Shiva never squeezed or even entertained. Her demeanor felt almost infant like, the way she tilted her head as she examined everything Summer did. Or...what she didn’t do.
Above, the ice ceiling began melting away again, the meadow fading into dust along the way. Shiva was the last thing Summer saw before everything became an empty space of black. Then, she woke. Dried tear marks were strong on her face and something pinned her right hand from trying to rub them off. Summer looked at her bedside and was taken back by the sight of her brother sleeping with his head laying on the mattress and hand holding her own. “Nick?” Summer said softly, pulling her hand free gently. Nick had always been a light sleeper. Summer had barely done anything and yet Nick woke up.
The boy rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. “Hey sis. Did you sleep okay? You kept crying and trembling.”
“I was?” Summer rubbed her neck and rubbed her tear tracks away. “Sorry. I...guess I had a nightmare.” The sun barely hit her curtains so it must still be pretty early. “Were you here all night? Nick, you’re sick.”
“It’s not like you can catch a cold, miss immunity.”
Summer pouted. “That’s not what I meant and you know it. You’re not gonna get better sleeping on the ground. Worry about yourself first for once?” She said, dry and tired. Summer laid back down and faced away from her brother. She heard him stand up but didn’t hear him walk away. Her mattress sank down seconds later and his hand took hers again.
“Are you...mad at me? You were pretty upset a couple days ago about the Paladin match, and Valerie sure had some choice things to say to me. I know I can be…overbearing at times. I get that you probably want space, but can you at least tell me if there’s anything I did specifically.”
His voice sounded hurt and tired as well. Summer didn’t know Valerie and Nick were on shaking ground. Is that why Nick didn’t tell her he was sick? Summer turned around. “I’m not mad at you. Things have been really low lately is all. I’m sorry if it felt like I’ve directed any of it at you. Things should get better after the tournament. Veronica will probably leave, I’ll have nothing but school lined up, and Oscar will hopefully be back by then. Not the biggest fan of virtual sessions.”
“Yeah, I can see that. Listen if you want more free time then I won’t make you-”
“Performing at the tournament is just fine.” Summer smiled. “Like I would miss a chance to stun a crowd, all of Remnant in fact. Besides, I made an Acr promise to an orphan, remember? I couldn’t back out if I wanted to.”
“Yeah...that would be pretty bad:” Nick cringed at the thought of an entire orphanage being sad and lied to. That’s guilt that would follow someone forever. “Got any plans today? It might do us some good to practice at least once together before the tournament. Not that we really need it.”
“Please, if it isn’t our dual summoning then we’re set. We can’t do that today though. Veronica and I are...umm…” Summer wanted to tell Nick about their argument yesterday which led to Veronica all but forcing her to agree to a fight today and the use of stolen diamond dust, but it wouldn’t make much sense to. Endangering him with her risks was the main reason things escalated. “We’re...going around town and the woods to get things for my outfit.”
“The woods?”
“Yeah she wants to see me fight grimm and we’re gonna look for pure dust and stuff. So don’t worry if you get one of your little twin chills or whatever you call it.”
“I don’t call it anything. Twin chill is nice though. Well be careful. Expect a call if I feel it. Better safe than sorry. It would suck for me to be grabbing school papers while Shiva is rampaging through the woods.” Nick was getting a little stressed thinking about it. One minute he’s stapling papers then sees a massive glacier outside the school window. Not to discredit his sister, but that’s the kind of luck Nick typically had. Things go fine, and then they don’t.
“School papers?” Summer questioned. “Nick it’s not a school day.
“I know. I’m gonna stop by there this afternoon and get the work I missed.” A look of disbelief and judgement shot him right in his heart from Summer. “What!? Just because I’m sick doesn’t mean the homework disappeared. I’m simply going to get it and come back home to rest. Summer’s look did not waver. Nick turned a little red for the nonverbal call out. He stood up. “Leave me alone! I’m going back to bed and then I will do exactly as I said I would do.”
“You’re full of shit…” Summer said while doing a fake cough.
“Night, you little diva.” Nick walked out her room and grabbed the door to shut it.
Summer reached out for a second. “Wait a second.” She said, her voice more reserved. “Nick, y...you love me right? Like, spending time with me?”
Nicholas looked at his sister with a raised brow. “Of course I love you. You’re my baby sister. Not that you being that means I have to hang around you or anything. Why, someone dumb tell you otherwise?”
Summer couldn’t help but smile. “No, hearing you actually say it is just nice. Rest well.” Nick smiled back then closed the door. The smile Summer wore tried its best to stay, but left as quick as it came. Her swarming thoughts made her head feel heavy and cluttered until Summer found herself resting it in her hands as she attempted to rest a little more. Sleep never came back for her unfortunately, no matter how many minutes passed her by.
It felt like no time at all before Summer was out of her bed and getting dressed for the day. She decided to keep her hair down for now and was more concerned about if she was gonna be warm enough. Her standard black thermal leggings and old white over coat should do the trick, but Summer felt compelled to put her ear muffs around her neck and wear warmer socks with her already poofy white winter boots. Snow gloves were put in her coat for safe keeping. Testing diamond dust without Nick was more stressful than she thought it would be. At least the layers of close gave her a good excuse whenever she’d start sweating.
The fated knock on the door finally came and took ten years off of Summer’s life. “Y-Yes?” The door creaked open before being fully swung open with Veronica on the other side. An exceptionally beautiful soft brushed purple winter coat that had a belt around the waist and big black buttons to bundle the whole thing up. Her color of choice was complemented with grayish-white jeans that looked roomie; a weird choice for the girl. Then there were her gym shoes school? Her entire bottom half was casual in contrast from the coat.
Summer got a bit worried. Veronica dresses herself with purpose. Her wardrobe doesn’t sacrifice functionality for flare, yet is stylish nonetheless. This one felt disjointed however. “Ummm what’s with the shoes and jeans? I would’ve thought you’d look a little more...stunning?” Said Summer, choosing her words carefully. She must’ve succeeded because Veronica gave a rude look and nothing else. It was easy to tell that she was still tired from the way she rubbed her eyes. “Didn’t sleep well either?”
“I’m sore and the time difference hasn’t gone away yet. As for my clothes, why would I wear my good clothes when I’m going to the woods and things can get physical? I’d wear a different coat if I had one.” Veronica pulled out a scrunchy and put her lion’s mane of a hair into a ponytail tail.
The sleeves of the coat fell down and Summer became a little more anxious to see Ember Cilca on Veronica’s wrists.“ Oh right, of course she’ll dress comfy in a fight. And use a strong weapon. Why not use her own? Is punching me that exciting?” Her eyes looked down and noticed a small duffel bag outside the door. “What is she gonna do to me!?” Summer ‘casually’ walked over to her sword and put it on her hip. It made her feel a little safer. Then she grabbed a hidden vial of diamond dust. Safety was right back out the window.
“You’re only bringing the one?”
“If this goes terribly then I don’t need Shiva getting a double dose. One is more than enough.” Summer held it out. “Here. It’s probably better you have it for now.”
“On that, we can agree on.” Veronica took the vial and grabbed and used her tail to grab her bag. “Let’s get this over with already…” she stormed off immediately.
Summer thought it best to follow Veronica’s lead. The girl was clearly in a bad mood. “Dying in the woods by a girl crushing on my brother. Yeah, that’s on par with the rest of my life.”
xxxx
With two of noisiest people out of the house, it was pretty easy to tell something was amiss for Weiss. It’s almost eight in the morning and the sound of guitar or vocals hadn’t rattled her morning coffee. Yeah they had a sound room, but that never stopped Summer from playing a rift on the way to it. “It’s quiet, too quiet.” She took a sip from her mug then went to the garden. “Maybe Summer is training? Veronica could probably hear through the sound room.”
The closer Weiss got to the garden, the easier it was to hear that someone actually was there. Yang. She was upside doing push-ups in just a tank top and yellow pajama pants.
“Forty five...forty six...forty seven…forty- oh hey Weiss.”
“Hehehe, how are you not freezing? It’s barely warmed up yet.”
“Since when have I ever been bothered by a little cold air?” Yang let her balance slip to land right side up. “I’m hot every day all day.” She flipped her hair for dramatic effect.”
“Well Mrs. Hot stuff, have you seen Summer? Despite her reluctance to go to school, the girl is an early riser. Especially on the weekends. Is- hey, you got a little…” Weiss pointed on a few bruises on Yang’s right shoulder.
“Oh this? Veronica wanted to spar yesterday. Her mood wasn’t exactly friendly.” Yang sighed. Her body flopped on the soft grass near the tear area. “That girl, it feels like all we do these days is spar rather than trying to talk.”
“Gee, I wonder where she gets that from.” Weiss said with the most sarcastic tone in the world. “I guess I’m in no position to make fun. Summer is hard to communicate with too. Teenagers man.”
“Tell me about it! Were we this bad?”
“Yeah.” Weiss nodded, remembering everything and cringing. “Yeah… gods, we were a lot to deal with.”
“You maybe. I was pretty-”
“Hard headed and passionate? Uncompromising on everything? Loud as hell?”
Yang sat up. “Okay already! Point taken hehe. Oh if you’re looking for Summer, she’s out in town with Veronica.”
That wasn’t an answer Weiss thought she’d hear. “For what? Those two can’t breathe in front of each other without wanting to fight.”
“Well they don’t have a choice if Veronica wants to make a perfect outfit for her. Walking, running, sitting, posture, Veronica likes seeing all of that in order to make a quality design. Kid has a real gift.” Yang crossed her arms. “Too bad people don’t give her the time of day.”
“Oh. So the situation hasn’t gotten any better for her?” Weiss asked.
Yang shrugged. She began pacing around in circles. “Besides what happened here, there hasn’t been a school fight in a while or calls home. Grades are average but that’s to be expected. No drugs either, thankfully. Pretty sure that was a one off thing. Still, Veronica is clearly unhappy and not even Blake gets much out of here these days. We’d take her therapy but she’ll run off or flat out won’t go.” Yang let out another huge sigh, slouching over. “I’m worried. I just want her talking to somebody that will listen and care.
Weiss could relate to that. “Well, at least Nick chips away at that armor of hers.”
“True. That boy is magic. I don’t wanna have him doing it all by himself though. I’m positive he has his fair share of problems too. How is he?”
“All work and no play recently. You saw how sick he was yesterday right? If I could just take a little bit of his drive and replace it with Summer’s reasoning….”
“Ruuuuude! I’m reasonable!” Shouted the boy from the balcony. “Some would say I’m actually quite flexible.
Weiss scoffed, rolling her eyes playfully. “Those people don’t live with you! How are you feeling? Still have a fever?”
“A little one, but I think I’m alright. Well enough to go get my assignments from school? Please?” He said, giving puppy eyes that made Yang laugh and Weiss facepalm.
“Hahaha. Nick, I wish my horses worked half as hard as you do, but I think you might be giving your mother gray hair.”
“Oh he knows! I tell him all the time that one day he’ll notice my hair is gonna go from white, to silver over night because of him and his sister.”
He smiled. “And you’ll look just as beautiful.”
“Nice try, Jaune jr. Fine, you can get your work. However, you’re not walking. I’ll drive you there later and just like with training I’m gonna time you. I swear I don’t know where you get this drive from. Even I know when to take a break.”
“Not at his age.” Yang shot back. “Jaune and Ruby mellowed you out. Nick, your mother didn’t know what to do with herself sometimes. Especially when nobody was around. I’ve walked in on her reading a cookbook, in Menageran! I live there now and I barely know one dialect!”
“Blake didn’t teach them all?
“No point. There’s tons of different languages. Just ask Veronica. She knows two fluently and will gladly show it off. Did you by any chance hear the part of the conversation where your mother and I talked about her? If so, can you not mention it?”
“No worries, didn’t hear anything besides you wanting her to open up more. I don’t think you gotta worry about that too much.” Nick spoke with confidence, hitting his chest. “Veronica might not know it yet but I’m positive Eliza enjoys her company; and I’m trying my best to get Veronica to talk to Summer semi-friendly.”
Weiss was skeptical. “You’ve tried that before. Got a master plan you haven’t shared?”
He shook his head proudly. “Not at all! Hahaha!” Nick looked to the sky. Gentle snowflake flowed through a slow air current like a frozen river. “All I have is hope.”
xxxx
“This is utterly hopeless.” Was the only thing Veronica can say in despair as dozens of people stood in multiple lines to board airships. “Why is everyone up so early!? It’s been half an hour and we haven’t budged. The week day isn’t like this.”
“Of course it isn’t. People work.” Summer looked around to see familiar citizens going on and off ships with luggage; as well as complete strangers who haven’t adjusted to the cold of Atlas. “Many important people have already started showing up in advance for the tournament. They may not help like you will but coming so soon is a great excuse to explore the kingdom and gain influence. They might even drop by the schools and try recruiting if they can get away with it. Almanac is a place where-”
“I know, I know. It’s where society collides. It’s built down on Mantle as a way to expose youths like yourself to how the less fortunate live and inspire you to make the city better. Conversely, all the trips and equipment allows the kids in Mantle to have quality equipment and see Atlas up close; giving them a goal to work towards.”
“It also exposes the older people here to the citizens of Mantle. Creating situations where interactions between the two isn’t rare changes some people’s perspective, or at least makes them think twice about deciding on some affirmative action that hurts the people below. It’s a little harder to disregard the common man whenever their kids are friends with them and you know some.”
“Not really. They think twice because it isn’t smart to angry people who can get to your front door with ease.”
Summer felt her entire vibe get a little bleeker. “Way to make it pessimistic.”
“Hard not to be with a line like this!” Veronica shouted too loudly, drawing a few eyes their way. Not that she cared. “Ugh, isn’t there another means of getting down? Can’t you flex your last name and skip?”
“Weren’t you listening? A lot of high profile people are here. If I throw titles around then so will they. Then you have a bunch of rich people being snobby and being put into a bad light. That includes your family.” Summer witnessed Veronica’s agitated state get a little more restless. It was very strange. This wasn’t the “people agitate me” kind of mood Veronica showed off. No, she seemed torn up. Against her better judgment, Summer took the girl's hand in concern. “Hey are okay? You’re acting weird.”
Veronica looked at the girl's big blue eyes. It was scary how pretty those eyes were. Arc blue had its own appeal that was different then Nick’s chilling Schnee eyes. Veronica looked at her hand and pulled it away. “I’m just a little hungry and you know, lady stuff.” She lied about the second part. “Also don’t touch me without asking. You know I don’t let anybody touch me without asking.”
“Yeah between that and your semblance I can’t imagine you being much of a hugger.” Summer laughed nervously, wondering why she said that of all things. This line has single handedly forced the longest interactions they’ve had without a fight in an extremely long time. Summer was waiting for Veronica to decide on fighting here instead. They were running out of banter! “So umm...wanna eat and pray the line gets shorter when we get back?”
“Will it?” Veronica deadpanned. The lack of eye contact told her all she needed to know. This line was only gonna get worse. “Ugh. Fuck it, new plan. I’m not waiting any longer to get a ride.”
“I told you, using your title is a bad idea.”
“I’m not going to, genius. Follow me.” Veronica ditched the line and started heading back more towards the outer rim of Atlas, right where buildings and watch posts were stationed. “Let’s play a game.”
“That’s never a good sentence.” Summer instinctively moved a little slower. She was not about to get sucker punched. “What kind of game?” She was already regretting asking. It was gonna be crazy.
Veronica finally stopped moving and turned around. “A race to Mantle. The fun way.” She pointed to the edge.
Summer looked out and saw the chains extend down. One of them had a good enough angle to point them in the direction where the woods are. Right at the edge of the old slums in fact. “You’re nuts…”
“Don’t play that card!” Veronica pointed at her. “I know all about you snowboarding on these things!”
Boom! Caught red handed. No way Summer could deny that. “I promised Winter I wouldn’t needlessly endanger myself.” That was a solid excuse.
“Aren’t we literally going to the woods to mess with dangerous dust you stole?” And that was a solid answer. “You’re not gonna talk me out of this. I debate and public speak on national levels. You have a school club.”
“I’m not even in the debate club.”
“Exactly. Now stop arguing. We’re wasting time.”
As usual, Summer could only fall into whatever crazy thing would happen next. But she wasn’t giving up that easily. Veronica wouldn’t dare be too rude in public. “What’s stopping me from walking away right now? I could get on an airship and make it to the forest before you get down the chains.”
An amused chuckle came from Veronica. “Hehehe, it’s funny how wrong you are sometimes. I said race to Mantle, and I never said I was gonna use the chains.” Before Summer had a chance to even think about what she just said, Veronica fell through the ground.
It was so sudden that Summer was thankful she didn’t blink. “Veronica!?” She gasped. Now there wasn't a choice at all! “That’s so...I can’t believe..aaah! Why is she like this!?” Summer shouted to nobody. Her feet raced to the edge, then jumped. The rush of cold early morning air was more than enough for her to create a snowboard of ice that planted her right on the chains. “Can’t things be normal for once?” A path of glyphs shot down the chain. The use of her semblance with the little control over diamond dust she had made for a potent combination. Summer was blazing down the chain! The links between each one were terrifying though. A late hop could shatter the board and send her flying. “Don’t fuck up don’t fuck up don’t fuck up don’t fuck up, and juuuump!” Little hops was all it took for her to soar down wards for seconds before landing. “Doing a trick or two would be pretty amazing if this wasn’t so dangerous and a race.” Summer looked around the air. “Where is she anyways?” Her gaze finally spotted the girl. Veronica was actually beneath her. The girl’s back faced the ground while her hands rested in her pockets, eyes closed blissfully. “Veronica?” Summer said. She got noanswer. Veronica continued to fall effortlessly. As if she was unconscious. Summer shouted again. “Veronica! You alright over there?” Still no answer. Now Summer was worried. “HEY!? VEE VEE!”
Not even her despised nickname gave Veronica a reaction. Summer could feel her heart start to race. “She can’t actually be unconscious right!?” Reasoning with herself wasn’t working. If by some chance Veronica was knocked out...Summer didn’t want to think about it. There was no time to think. Without another second to waste, Summer jumped off the chain and began falling towards her long term acquaintance. She brandished Myrtenaster and angled three glyphs to bounce off of to reach Veronica. Summer extended her hand in fear of the girl’s safety. “Veronica!!!!”
“Huh?” Veronica opened her eyes to see a blur of white and blue hurling towards her. “What in the-” She wasn’t the only one surprised. Summer’s eyes bugged out. The girl was completely caught off guard, crashing into Veronica and sending them spiraling through the air. Fortunately, Veronica was quick to grab Summer by the sleeve and pull her into a tight embrace for the girl’s own safety. “Summer!? What the hell!? Why did you jump!?”
“Why were your eyes closed!?!?! I thought you had passed out or something. I was screaming your name!!” Summer yelled with tears in her eyes from the fear.
“Summer I can’t hear shit when wind is roaring through my ears! I was relaxing!”
“RELAXING!? YOU ARE FREE FALLING!!!!” Summer screamed. No doubt Veronica heard that.
“IT IS A LONG FALL, SUMMER! IT IS LITERAL HANG TIME!” Veronica yelled back. She finally noticed the tears coming from Summer. At first she thought it was because of the wind but they kept coming. “Are you crying right now!?”
“YES, DUMBASS! I THOUGHT YOU WERE FALLING TO YOUR DEATH!!!”
Veronica’s heart felt like it stopped for a moment. She had no response for that. Never in her wildest dreams did she expect Summer, anyone, to freak out over something like that. It was a little haunting. If she didn’t feel like a jerk before, Veronica definitely was feeling that way now, just a little. She looked over her shoulder to see Mantle buildings and ground coming in hot. Her arms fastened tightly around Summer’s upper and lower back. “Wrap your arms and legs around me, tightly!”
Summer did as she was told and felt Veronica’s hand press against the back of her head. What should’ve been several seconds before a splat became extended free falling. Summer went from seeing the sky, buildings, the pavement, and then minerals. Crushed sediments and pavement that were firmly placed within the dirt. Summer was experiencing seeing underground for the first time. “Woah…. you can do this all the time!? You see €€this all the time!? How deep are we?
“You are quite literally being impressed by things you can see with a shovel. Now flex your stomach and try not to get the wind knocked out of you.”
Once again, Summer listened and gave a pat on the back for confirmation. A weird feeling ran over her body. As if going down an elevator, then €€boom! That feeling became ten times worse. It was like a rollercoaster on the highest drop. But instead of going down, their bodies were being forced up. The world of minerals was left behind for streets once again. Their momentum kept going up until they came to a midair stop. Summer instinctively made a platform at their feet before they fell again.
Veronica finally let go and pulled Summer off of her body. “Well that’s one way to stop. I’ll admit, clever thinking.”
“What was your plan?”
“I would five back into the ground and back up. Each time would get less air then the last before eventually I would be like several inches from the ground, or I’d land on a roof on the way down. Simple stuff.” Veronica brushed off her outfit in an attempt to get the wrinkles out. The puffy eyes looked from Summer made her let out an auditable little laugh in disbelief. “Tsk, I cannot believe you actually cried.” She teased.
Summer squinted at Veronica before folding both arms and turning her head away dramatically. “I don’t see what’s so funny. Not in the slightest.”
“That’s because you have no sense of humor.”
“What’s humorous about a death like that? It’s terrible.”
Veronica shrugged casually. “Eh, there’s worse ways to go. But ummm thanks for checking, and stuff…” Veronica jumped off the glyph and onto a roof before Summer got any mushy ideas from a thank you. “The race is null in void. Move your butt. We have ground together since we made an emergency landing.”
“We’re skipping the fact you just showed me a little gratitude?” Summer teased. She couldn’t help it. The glare shot at her for it though reminded Summer that teasing a person she had to fight soon wasn’t a great plan. Unlike Valerie, Summer wasn’t gonna get any buffs or debuffs from it. “Hehehe….I’ll start moving my butt.”
“A wise decision.”
xxxx
“Alright, we’re here.” Weiss said, parking her car into the mostly empty school parking lot. “Nick, you have fifteen minutes to get what you need. Anymore and I’m coming in to drag you out myself.”
He laughed. “Can you at least send the gigas in? If you’re gonna be extra then go all the way.” He hopped out the car and ran inside.”
“Don’t tempt me!” Weiss shouted. She was not above embarrassing him like that. Not in the slightest.
Nick jogged his way down the halls. Benefit of the weekend, no crowded halls. Just him, the occasional faculty, and the sports team. Basketball, soccer, the usual suspects. However, the sight of favorite blue haired girl in an Atlesian military uniform and the kingdom’s flag had caught his attention. Seeing Eliza with her twin tails undone and in one regular ponytail was always so shocking to him. “Yo, Eliza!” He waved.
She looked at him briefly before doing a double take. “Nick? Aren’t you supposed to be in bed resting?”
If he had a nickel…. Nick walked up to her in disbelief. “Is everyone my mom today?” He joked. “I am fine. Just grabbing my assignments. Anyways, color guard practice today? Cool. Didn’t realize I wasn’t the only one doing double duty for the tournament; though I guess I’m technically doing triple.” The weight of that hit him a little. How’d he manage that!?
“Yeah, just for the opening ceremony. I’m the lead when it comes to the flags so hehe, all eyes on me.” It was hard not to hide her nerves about the whole thing. “In terms of weight, it’s not too different from my spear. The routine is almost solid.”
Nick could tell she said that more for her benefit than his. It was funny. Eliza wasn’t one to waver most of the time. Then again, this was her first time doing this and second time competing in this tournament. “Hey, you survived cameras on you before. You fought me last year without choking.”
“Yeah, and lost miserably.” Eliza would never forget that day. “Thanks for the reminder.” She said sarcastically.
“Shut up, you got third on your first major tournament. You couldn’t ask for a better debut against veterans like myself and Val. Oh, thanks for sticking around Vee by the way.”
“Don’t mention it. I did it more for me than you anyways.”
“Ouch. You’re so cruel to your work husband.”
Eliza’s face turned a little red. She pointed her finger at him and sparked it with magical electricity. “Never say that again.”
“Hahaha! I’m just teasing. I still appreciate the help. Anyways, I gotta go get my stuff and bail before my mom makes due on a not so empty threat. Bye!” He ran off past her towards his classrooms.”
“Council room” Eliza said, making Nick stop halfway down the hall. “All your work...I put it in the council room for you.” Even from a distance she could see Nick’s eyes light up. Did it really not take much to make this boy happy?
“Awww Eliza-” she pointed at him again with Fire this time. Nick thought it best to quit while he was ahead and continued walking. Although, he made a little mental note for later. “Hmmm, I wonder if Eliza would be good at candle training. Fire is fire after all. Magic or dust wise.” Nick continued pondering the idea. Magic has always been cool to Nick. The fact he actually knew a person could do it was especially cool. If he could trade being the heir for being the first person with magic in centuries, he might not think twice about it. Nick couldn’t help but fantasize about a life with lower expectations and no heavy title. “Vee is right. I should really talk to my uncle about this. Well, after the tournament, or maybe do it beforehand then soften the blow by winning gold? That would be good.” He turned a corner, failing to check for on comers. “Look at me, talking as if I don’t have to face-” Nick ran head onto Valerie hard and stumbled back.
His friend dropped a bunch of hockey sticks. Some of which hammering her toes. “Ow!” She screamed, her team hearing from several feet away. “Hey watch where you’re- Nick?”
“Hey Val…” He said nasally. The impact had him rubbing his nose gently as it turned red. “Tackling you must be a nightmare. You're like a wall of tanks.” His strange analogy was ignored entirely. He looked up at Valerie and saw nothing but shock and irritation as she pulled him close, real close.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick? I’m the one who told you to get rest? I didn’t know it was bad enough for you to be bed ridden.”
“I uhh well you see…” Focusing was hard enough from the crash. The literal inch between them made Nick feel unprepared. Though her face was upset, he still found beauty in it. Especially with the hint of care he saw her turquoise eyes. “You said you wanted space. So I thought I wouldn’t bother you.” He finally said, hesitantly. Valerie didn’t seem too happy with his response.
“Idiot.” Valerie said, “If it’s about your health then blow up my phone for all care!” She huffed. Valerie’s cheeks turned a little red. “Are we clear?” Nick didn’t respond back. His eyes avoided her gaze and he seemed uncomfortable. “Nick? You alright?”
He looked towards her, a little nervous. “Can I make it up to you? Since you were worried and all?”
“What are you-”
“Not as a date if that’s what you’re afraid of.” Nick reassured, “Clearly I upset you so let me fix it by taking you to your favorite dine in restaurant? These last couple days I…missed you okay?” He could feel his face turning red. Platonic or not, this sounded like a confession. And yet Valerie hadn’t let go of him yet. It might’ve been his imagination, but he could’ve sworn she had gotten redder.
Valerie could feel herself being apart mentally. Nick wasn’t one to lie, but enduring was what he did best. How often did he think about her while he was sick? Did she make his fever worse? Was not telling him more painful for him than it was her? Valerie didn’t know. Making sense of any of it wasn’t important. “Nick I-” her voice was cut off by the murmurs of the halls. Athletes and onlookers passed by with their whispers and giggles. They had once again made a spectacle out of nothing. Another thing for idiots to gossip about and spread their lies. Valerie couldn’t stand it. Her blood began to boil. It never failed. Nick had made life, her life, a little more about him and less about her. Valerie finally let go of him, pushing him away. “No, sorry.” She said, clearly irritated. “I still want my space; and we both know how you are. Date or not, you just can’t help yourself but pull out the red carpet act like if I need you when I don’t. It’s pretty…” Nick didn’t let her finish. He turned his back to her. It was only then Valerie realized just how much she was mouthing off. “Wait that came out wrong.” She double backed, “I…”
“You don’t get to do that.” Nick finally bit back, “Telling me I should’ve called and that you care, only to push me away at your convenience. Now you’re berating me? What is with you lately!?” His voice echoed through the hall. It was only then he paid attention to his peers who quickly moved along the moment he tried meeting their gaze. Suddenly, something clicked. “Are you...embarrassed by me?” He said, mid revelation.
“You’re causing a scene, Nick.” She muffled, unusually reserved. “Listen, I just think the tournament takes priority is all.” Valerie lies, unknowingly letting her pride get the better of her. “I’m not embarrassed by you, honest.”
“So why do you brush me off every time people are around huh? I’m not a mind reader. Just come out with it.” He got no answer. Just silence while Valerie’s eyes looked for people who might still be watching. Now he was really annoyed, and he wasn’t even sure if it was because of Valerie or himself for getting worked up in the first place. “You know what? Forget it. Have it your way. I’m too ill to argue.” He said dismissively. Nick walked away from the argument to get what he came for. He was on a time limit anyway.
Valerie watched her friend turn the corner, hurt by her words. Or maybe the lack of them. Valerie turned around to go back to practice and stopped after only one step, stunned by the sight of her mother carrying extra sports gear.
Nora let out an exhausted sigh then smiled, “Oh boy. Here I thought your biggest worry today would be run down knee pads.” She laughed awkwardly at her own ice breaker. “Wanna talk about it later.”
Valerie got closer. She took the gear from her mother and went towards the gym. “There’s nothing to talk about.”
Nora let Valerie get away. There will be time for questions later. Nora put her hands on her hips and shook her head. “Teenagers.”

Neither twin was having the best mood right now. Summer could feel her heart beating out of her chest the deeper into the woods she went. Ever since the free fall, Veronica had gone silent. Any attempt at conversion was ignored. She just kept walking deeper and deeper until everything started to look the same to Summer. Thankfully no grimm had appeared, but if they kept walking aimlessly like this… “I think this far enough, Veronica.” Summer said. Veronica actually listened and stopped before turning around.
“Yeah, this’ll do nicely.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out the diamond dust while dropping her bag. “I say it’s about time we get this over with. Catch.” She tossed the vial of dust, underhanded.
Summer nearly panicked as she caught it midair. “What are you-don’t do that! This stuff is dangerous!” If her nerves weren’t shot before, they were now.
“The dangerous part is yet to come.” Veronica engaged Ember Celica and brought her fists up. She would’ve liked to remove the jacket, but a piece of her mind told her it was far wiser to keep the extra layer of warmth and protection. “Well?”
“Yeah, what are you waiting for?”Said the alluring lethal voice inside of Summer’s head, sending chills up her spine. This wasn’t the cold’s doing. No, this was fear. Pure unkempt adrenaline that made her stomach twisted into knots and body shiver. “She’s asking for it, so let her have it. Better her than fear sweet Nicholas, right?”
Summer couldn’t stop shaking in place. This wasn't the plan. Not like this so much could go wrong. Was she really to fight Shiva again? Did Veronica stand a chance? Just how much stronger would Shiva’s grip be by doing this. If they failed, if she wasn’t strong enough then…that might be it. This wasn’t just her own life at stake either. Summer already thought Veronica might’ve died today. If it was by her own hands…
Bile threatened to come up and out of throat. Summer couldn’t even see straight anymore. The trees spun around her and her balance felt off. The whole world seemed to crush her under her own weight and tears-
“Lesson learned.” Called out Veronica, bringing reality back to Summer. She hadn’t realized it through her panic attack, but Veronica had gotten remarkably close to her, looking right into her soul and placing a hand to rub Summer’s pale cheek. Summer was so overwhelmed she began stammering. “W-What a...are y-you-”
“This terrifying fear that’s crippling you; the absolute anxiety of knowing how potentially dangerous it would be to pull a stunt like this? Maybe remember it the next time you wanna drag Nick into one of your reckless training, kay?” Veronica took the Diamond Dust away from Summer and returned it to her pocket. “Okay, now for the real reason we’re here. We need things for your outfit and so on.”
Summer watched Veronica nonchalantly lift her bag and walk off again. She couldn’t be it. This entire was a set up. A guilt trip into thinking more about Nick’s safety, and it worked. The humiliation of it all. What’s worse was Summer felt...like she deserved it? Did Nick ever feel this, this fear? How many times did she want to train her control and he went along with it? Why did he go along with it!? Her body felt weak, exhausted. Summer stumbled back against a tree, sliding down until she sat in the snow on the verge of breaking down. “Stop.” She said, weak and afraid. “I need a minute, so please stop.”
Veronica looked back to see the state Summer was in. No longer was she fighting back tears. Summer openly wept as she hugged her knees tightly to try and stop the shaking. She wasn’t the only one feeling guilty.
“Damnit Veronica! I didn’t think it would scare her this bad or make her cry!”Veronica walked back to the fragile girl and sat next to her quietly. This was a complete disaster. Emotional vulnerability was never a thing Veronica was good at doing or dealing with. She took a chance and used her tail to wipe Summer’s wet face, gaining her attention. “I ummm, wasn’t trying to...a panic attack was not in my plans. You looked a little frantic at first but then you spiraled in the blink of an eye. I’m…” Veronica looked away, her ears folded in shame. “I fucked up. My bad. Nick told me to take it easy on you and here I am being worse than usual.”
Summer sniffled. She wasn’t exactly sure how to respond to being comforted. Especially by Veronica of all people. Still, it felt nice. Different from others. That’s for sure. “I’m sorry.”
That was out of left field. “What?” Said Veronica, turning back around. “Umm I don’t think you know how apologies work. I mean I barely do, but this isn’t right.”
“I said some things I didn’t mean about you yesterday. I was angry at myself and directed it to you. I may not know what bothers you but I know you probably have shit in your life going on too.”
“Yeah well...we’re famous. Problems come with the territory, and puberty.”
“Eh, can’t relate. High regen and pain tolerance. I don’t get cramps, or get sick. The only upside to getting blasted with dust no scientist can identify.”
“I probably shouldn’t envy you but maaaan, little jealous. Not gonna lie.”
The girls shared a small chuckle for what it was worth. Summer sniffled again and rubbed her eyes. “Ya know, we don’t really...talk, do we? Not since we were five. I’m sure there’s a lot of things we could learn.”
Veronica couldn’t suppress her unwilling groan. Bonding was not on her agenda. However, Veronica couldn’t help but think about Nick’s words and her promise to him. “Let’s make a truce? We have to spend time together. There’s no getting around it.”
“I’m painfully aware…” Summer moaned. “What’s the truce?”
Veronica stood up and reached for Summer’s hand, lifting her up as well. “I will do my damnedest to be less confrontational if you do as well. Also if you are willing to explain this whole Shiva business to me, then… I’ll explain my faunus business. I suppose.” Her tail instinctively wrapped around her waist for security. She could tell by Summer’s expression that she was definitely intrigued. It was warranted. Veronica didn’t speak much about it on purpose. Now she was offering it on a silver platter. “Well?” She said anxiously”
Summer retook Veronica’s hand and shook it. “Alright, truce.”

oc lewis was born outside of a small religious town called dorris, california. its population is less than 2,000 but he doesn’t exactly go to town often, because he completely survives in a commune of the same name that’s a few miles from civilization. the community is definitely, when viewing it as a third party, a catholic cult, estranged from a regular community and harboring a dark history and repulsive secrets and rituals. it has a sizeable church with a basement, attic/ bell tower, and back offices, a large brick building with huge rooms in which beds are lined up like old infirmeries. white walls, white beds, and six huge windows, three on two parallel walls. lewis is near one window that has a cracked window pane. boys in one room and girls in the other, from infants to teenagers. there are around 50 boys and 20 girls and they all have special pajamas, thermal pants and a long sleeve night shirt that is also--you guessed it!- white. during the day girls wear long dresses over long sleeved button ups and boys, button ups and shorts or nice pants. lewis’s clothes are a bit off white from wear. beyond the rooms are basic things like a space for a kitchen and small dining hall where food is made from their own farm and crop field. and there is an actual infirmary in a separate location, the quarters for adults, a barn with a farm and livestock. (lewis loves cows. there’s one named betsy who’s brown and white that loves to nibble on his face,) a shed with garden supplies and a garden (lewis’ favorite place to work at, in addition he also uses the shed as a place to hide and cry to himself when he’s scared or frustrated after a particularly bad day), there’s space to do laundry by hand and sew and craft, a well, a separate small place for private worship, a small building for homeschooling among other things. All between these buildings is open space, so just endless common areas of grass for the kids to wander through under creepy supervision.... and the entire population is probably pushing 200 or more. it could be seen as something similar to a monastery.... they are not self sufficient, they depend on the town of dorris, that being said they get away with being the most literal sketchy old catholicism torture hub because the town of dorris is corrupt enough to see dorris commune as an extension of them and therefore they work in tandem....that’s a little rundown its actually NOT idyllic as advertised, just ask lewis

The tractor part two
Zeb cruised down the main street of Snag Toe, a not-so-bustling metropolis that was only a skip and a hop away from the Trodd family farm. Puggles lay back in his reclined seat, picking his nose and flicking his findings into the wind.
“I told you to STOP DOING THAT!” Zeb popped his cousin across the chops with the back of his hand. “If one of those gets on me I’m gonna choke you out!”
Puggles cackled. He sat up in his seat and watched a jumble-shrub blow across the road. There were no vehicles hovering by the curbs or krauntaun mounts tugging at their hitching posts. Everything was quiet. A lone drifter clad in beaten leather fueled his speeder bike at a dark fuel station. He turned onto the street without looking in the opposite direction and headed for Transitway Nineteen East. A solitary bantha in a paddock across the road lowed plaintively as she watched him go, her long tongue stretched out in his direction of travel. All the shops–including Gurvis’s Tractor and Farm Supply– were closed. The windows of the shops were concealed by plate-metal shades, like the eyelids of sleeping lasats.
“Welp, looks like evrry’thang is closed.”
“It’s only an hour and a half to mid-sun!” Zeb said.
Puggles scratched his hairy chin. “Wunner if this has sumthin to do wit the elly-mentry school carnival? Old Gurvis volunteers fer the milk bottle toss erry year, an Mizz Clapp, y’ know, the sundry shop owner, sells tickets. Yup, pract’ly the whole damn town gets involved.”
Zeb palmed his face. “ WHY didn’t you mention this BEFORE?”
“I unno. Jus’ slipped m’ mind. Oh well. Guess we has to go back home.”
“No. No, I promised pa I’d help him fix the tractor today.”
Puggles sighed. He lit a cigarette and took a drag. “Well if you insist. We kin turn left at thee stop and head on over to Needlesap. They got a tractor parts store there too.”
Zeb thought for a moment.
“Nuh-uh. Needlesap has all those crazies who were released from the mental hospital. Oh. Heh. Sorry Puggles, no offense. Besides, it’s where all the Lunxx boys hang out. I don’t feel like saving your scrawny tail today.”
“Save mah tail? Shheeeoot. . . I kin hold my own with them blinked-milk-suckin’ moon-calfs.”
Zeb laughed. “Whatever you say, Puggles.” The big purple lasat stretched his arms over the steering yoke and rest his head on them. His ear twitched.
“What iz yew doin’? Gettin’ sum shut-eye’?”
“No. I’m thinking, and. . . I think I have an idea. How long has it been since you’ve visited the capital?”
“Amethyst City?”
“No. The other capital.” Duh.” “Of course Amethyst City!”
Puggles’ brown face twisted. “I’d rather suck on the business end of a lightsaber! Or scrawl m’ name acrost a Mandy-lorry-an’s helm! Hells, I’d rather go skinny-dippin’ wid a love-sick dianoga than go to thee blasted capital!”
“So you really don’t wanna go?”
“No!” Why would I? Place is fulla ijits. Dandy lads an’ snooty gals and polly-tish-ans and such.”
“There’s lots of nice lasats too.”
I heard there wuz staurmtroopers there. An’ guards all a’suited in red.”
“Well, yes, but that was over two dust seasons ago.” Zeb said, a small crease forming over his brow. “The Empire wants fealty. That’s why the Emperor has sent envoys over the last couple years. Same thing happened when the Separatists and the Republic were vying for our support. Lasan isn’t interested in any political affiliation other than its own.”
“White and red. Bone and blood.” Puggles intoned.”That’s what Mossy said. Bone and blood.”
Zeb rolled his eyes. “ I think Mossy’s been eating too many toadstools.”
“Mebbe so. But he’s a witch’s son. Sometimes he has the mindsight. You member that.”
Zeb’s eyes shifted to the floorboard of the speeder. He looked at his feet. His prehensile toes kneaded the warm, plastoid-sheathed metal. Puggles’ worries were his as well, though he would never admit it.
“Capital’s two hours away. We better get going. I want to get pa’s tractor up and running today so he can get an early start tomorrow morning.”
“Land a’ muddlin’. Fine. Let’s git a move on.”
The big city filled Puggles with a combination of loathing and excitement.
There was nary a field nor hollow nor tree to be seen, save the topiary monstrosities growing from large bronzium planter boxes lining the streets.
Massive domes and tall conical buildings competed with one another for space, corrupting the natural skyline of purple mountains beyond. Sheer crystal sidewalks tinged lavender and green fronted a myriad of shops for blocks and blocks on end. Lasats in colorful attire bustled about like bees in a hive, their servant droids walking behind them, shopping wagons in tow..
Zeb entered a round-about on one busy street. In the middle was a statue of a heroic-looking female. Her quadranium arm was raised, a large bo-rifle in her grip. The sun glinted off her tattered uniform and one bared breast.
Puggles' eyes widened three sizes. “Did yew see that? Her tiddy is showin’! Whoo-wee. . . and it’s a nice un’!
“Be respectful, Puggles. That’s Shaddis Rrochious. She was a highly-skilled warrior and martyr who perished in the barbarian wars.”
“A warrior huh? Sheeeoot, she could shock me wid that ‘lectric rifle any time.”
“I’ll be sure to tell her spirit that when I’m in temple. Oh, and by the way, there’s a great statue of Firuz in front of the Warrior Council building. We should bring Jenni next time. I’m sure she would admire the bulge in his-
“All right all right. Point taken.” Puggles turned and looked back. “I’m sorry Miss Shaddis! Please ‘cept a Southern boy’s humble ‘pology!”
They continued on down the street. Colorful, high-definition holograms flashed in the fancier shop windows, advertising the wares inside. The colors danced across the hood of Zeb’s speeder. Puggles’ whistled through his teeth.
“I ain’t been here since I wuz a lil’ sapling. Don't ‘member any of this crap.”
“Are you sure you could see over the dashboard?” Zeb threw back his head and laughed.
“Go fuck yerself.”
“Sorry. I couldn’t resist.” The big lasat covered his mouth with his hand and snickered.
Puggles hmmmf’ed. “I’ve been off planet and I never seen a sinners paradise like dis.”
“You keep on bounty hunting and I’m sure you will. Maybe you’ll get lucky and be offered a job in Coruscant.”
“ Lucky. Oh yeah, sure. Thee lower levels of Coruscant iz a killers’ paradise.”
Puggles changed the subject.“Where is we going t’ git the doodad for pa’s tractor?”
Zeb smiled proudly. “Just so happens I have access to the parts depot near the guards barracks.”
Puggles went silent, as if he was in a trance. He blinked his eyes. A wicked smile unfurled across his face.
“That means yew has access t’ the munitions depot too. Don’t yew?”
Zeb’s hands shifted nervously on the steering yoke.
“N-no. Of course not. I’m not authorized to go in there.”
“Yew iz lying cuzz. I kin always tell. Yer nose gits all pink and twitchy. Course It don’t happen much, since yew is such an honest soul.”
“As opposed to you.”
“Yep, as ‘posed t’ me.” Puggles raised and lowered his brows in quick succession. Goading his younger cousin.
Zeb stopped at a signal. Three attractive older females with fantastically coiffed hair crossed the street in front of him. All three were walking tiny, white-furred oorvarks with gemstone encrusted collars. They waved and lowered their eyelids in a flirtatious manner. When they were out of ear-shot Zeb turned to face Puggles and grabbed up the front of his shirt.
“Let’s get one thing straight. . . CUZZ. This isn’t a fireworks buying expedition. There’ll be no bombs, no thermal detonators, no percussion grenades, no flares, no flash-bangers , no detonite, and no rocket launchers! NOTHING!”
Puggles pulled back and brushed off the front of his old flannel shirt.
“ Of all thee in-dig-nitties! I swear Zebediah, military life has made yew as ornery as a croaker eel!! I just wanted a little sooveneer.”
“I’ll buy you a tee-shirt.”
Puggles mumbled under his breath. How dare his little cousin treat him like some kind of infant cub! He had half a mind to throw a fit, one that would embarrass Zeb to his core.
The speeder approached a busy establishment named the Tooth and Claw. It looked warm and inviting with its polished wood balistrades and stairs. A brawny male wearing the same type of skin-suit that Zeb wore had another male in a tight headlock out front. The trapped male didn’t seem distressed in any way. He laughed as he went to his knees and flipped his assailant over his shoulder. Both lasats stood up and patted each other on the back then lifted their huge ale mugs from a small table to the side of the stairs. Puggles clapped his hands and licked his parched lips.
“It’s a bar Zeb! Pull over! I could really use a beer!”
“Oh, I don’t know Puggles. You’ve been drinking a lot lately.”
“What iz yew, mah ma?”
“No. I just worry about you that’s all. Besides, we don’t have time.”
“We have time fer one beer!”
Zeb knew if he didn’t give in, his cousin would continue to harp about the weapons depot. He listened to the crowd inside the establishment. Clinking glass and raucous laughter spilled out the doorway. The laughing turned to cheering. It was the toeball finals, and Zeb knew that some of his mates were inside. He looked at Puggles who was practically salivating.
“Okay. First of all, here in the Capital, it’s called a pub. Second, ONE beer. Then we leave. I think I should warn you. There are some first-year honor guards in there. Like me. They get pretty rowdy. Especially when they’re watching sports.”
“I hate sports.”
“Yeeeah, maybe don’t mention that.”
Zeb parked the speeder around back. He and Puggles stretched their legs and headed for the front door. As soon as they entered the pub, a whole table of green skin-suited males jumped up, whooping and hollering.
“Hey it’s good old Orrelios! ”
“The Zebster!”
“What’s up Zebby?”
“Come over here mate! The Shocktown Royals are knocking the stripes off the Burrndock Howlers!!”
Zeb waved. Puggles was off like a rocket before his cousin could make introductions. He jumped up onto the bar’s foot-rail–squeezing between two big graybeards smoking their pipes–and banged on the wood planked bar.
“ Anyone here? Someone pour me a cold one! No foam now, ye hear?”
The tender stepped out of the shadow. She was almost eight feet tall and as wide as the two graybeards combined. Her hair was an enormous blue bush and her chin was as square as a box. A dark mole stood out on her right lower cheek like a bullet wound. The cobalt stripes on her impressive biceps were as wide as one of Puggles’ legs. A fat cigar dangled from her lower lip.
“Didja say something, love?” She said in a surprisingly pleasant voice.
Puggles stared up at her boulder-sized breasts and lava-hued eyes and let out a gasp of genuine admiration. He fluffed out his jaw fringes.
“Great Bearded One! If yew ain’t the most stunning creature of thee female sex I’ve seen in this blasted city! Howz about yew pour me a cold one an we kin step out back for a spell.”
Panicking, Zeb and two of his mates rushed the bar. ‘Tiny Teeks’ the bartender picked up a heavy glass mug. She looked like she was planning to smash Puggles’ in the mouth.
“I don’t like blokes funnin’ with me, Short-shanks!” She said.
“I ain’t funnin’ you Big Blue! I likes what I sees!”
The square-jawed female looked at Zeb, who had a pleading look in his eyes. She put down the mug. “Orrelios, ye came in with this little squirt. Is he for real?”
“Unfortunately he is. He fancies himself a ladies-male. He’s my uhh. . well you see, he ah..that is, me and him are. . .
“Cousins, Teeks!” One of Zeb’s squadmates–a few-years older male named Gron– shouted. “That’s Zebby’s hill-trekker cousin! The one he’s always talking about.”
“Well I’ll be a korsa’s dewlap.” Teeks said with a snicker. “Don't see the family resemblance.”
“Hit cain’t be seen on thee outside gorgeous. Our fam’ly’ semblance iz our love-makin' talents. Iddent that right, Zebadiah? Us Trodds iz natural born kit-magnets!”
“Oh Gods and Ancestors . . .” Zeb blushed while his friends fell on the floor laughing. He wanted nothing more than to shrink down to the size of a flea and disappear into a crack in the wall.
“Puggles, would you shut your-
Zeb didn’t finish his sentence. Horns blared from the holovid player speaker. They were proceeded by the roars of a couple thousand spectators. Lasats in the pub went wild. Teeks jumped up and down and clapped her hands. “GOOOOAAAAAAALLL!!! Oi, did ya see it boyos? Xaniboor’s ball flew into the net faster than a mynock flying out of th’ inferno! GO ROYALS!!”
Teeks picked up Puggles like a rag doll and kissed him on the lips. Then she dropped him and poured him a beer. “There’s more where that came from, love! No no, put away your credits! I’m buying. I don’t know about your special talents, but you sure as dust are a good luck charm!”
“What about me, Teeks?” A dark-faced, yellow-furred guard asked in a whining tone. “I’m your best customer!”
The big female frowned. “Squints, I wouldn’t piss in ye pocket if ye was dying’ of thirst. I heard what y’ said about me! That me arse is bigger than any of the arses in the Capital Zoo.”
“That wasn’t me! It was Bear.”
“Sure, sure. And I’m th’ bleedin’ Queen!”
Puggles puffed out his chest and walked jauntily toward the table where Zeb had re-seated himself. Noticing that there was no chair available for him, he dragged one from the next table over and shoved it between Zeb and another young male. The soldiers were talking–more like gossiping–about what seemed like a very serious incident.
“. . .so she snuck out, again, and met Lorrbskr in the priest’s gardens.”
“I don’t believe that.” Zeb said, shaking his head. “Lorrbskr’s got a good career ahead of him. His whole family is military. He could be General some day.”
Squints made a funny sound with his nose.“You know how the Princess is. Always flirting. Always sneaking out. Getting blokes into trouble is a sport for her.”
“But, her guards. How does she keep giving them the slip?”
“She’s as slick as snot, that one.”
“ Lorrbskr's going before a review committee. Karabast, I wouldn’t want to be in his shin guards.”
Zeb sat back and took a drink of his ale. He burped against his fist.
“You guys are jumping to conclusions. He was probably at the temple to pray for his sick mother. The Princess saw him from her window, climbed out and comforted him. You gotta admit her life has to be pretty boring. She’s not allowed to have a suitor, can’t go anywhere without a chaperone. Hells, the Queen probably picks out her wardrobe and food and everything.”
Puggles rolled his eyes.
“Yew fellers iz thee most borin’ stiffs I’ve ever met. Gossiping like a flock a’ hens. I’m gonna go play spinner darts.”
“You do that.” Zeb growled.
The little lasat ditched his chair and padded up to the bar. Teeks had a cold one waiting for him.
“Ye really should have some of the stout. It’ll hit ye in a most pleasant way.” She said, winking one orange eye.
“Darlin’, if beer was meant t’ be warm ittid be served in a soup bowl.”
~
Zeb watched Squints shuffle a nudie sabbacc deck.
“You in?” The yellow and brown lasat grinned.
“Sorry, no. We can only stay for a little while. Gotta get a part for my adoptive father’s tractor then drive back to Needlesap County before it gets dark.”
“No pressure mate. Hey uh, Zebby, me and the boys were meaning to ask you something.”
The other young guards turned away from the toeball game and stared at Zeb.
“What?”
“You know Captain Zanku is going to retire soon. Do you think you might try to claim his position?”
The purple lasat widened his eyes. He visibly swallowed. “ Me? Captain? I dunno. I mean I’ve thought about it. Maybe years down the road.”
“Come on. You'd make a great one! Right boys? That would be wiz! You as our Captain!”
Everyone nodded in excited agreement.
“Mnnn. The trials though. I’d have to get in top shape. Physically and mentally.”
“What are you talking about? You’re already there! Strong as a gnapstrup and sharp as a dirk. You passed your first trials with flying colors. Hells, you know more about military history than Zanku himself.”
Zeb put his hand behind his head and rubbed his neck. “Yeah. He made me regret correcting him on the dates of The Battle of Kisgothi.”
“Latrine duty sucks nodge-gobs doesn’t it?”
“Sure as shit does!”
The two lasats laughed until tears came to their eyes.
Gron slapped Zeb on the shoulder. “You got my vote, Orrelios. Karabast, you’ve got all our votes.” He raised his mug and the others at the table did the same.
Everyone in the pub clapped their hands over their ears when an ear-splitting shriek sounded high above the din. A surge of ugly, gray-green smoke boiled out of the back room. Puggles Trodd bolted through the smoke, his ears flat and his eyes enormous.
“Zeb! Let’s go!!” He screeched as he bounded across table-tops.
“Puggles? Is- is that one of your smoke screamers?”
“Stop wid thee questions and run!” Puggles shouted drunkenly.
“Why?”
“Y’ know a big dude wid a gray cape and a green bo-rifle?
“Yeah. That’s our Captain.”
“Well, I hit him in thee forehead wit a dart. Right smack tween th’ eyes. Don’ worry, he’s still kickin’.’”
Zeb’s eye twitched. As his friends ran for the door, he grabbed Puggles, threw him over his shoulder and sprinted outside. He tossed the little lasat into his speeder’s passenger seat and leapt into his own. The engines roared to life. Zeb floored the accelerator, fishtailing, then careening out into the street. He banged on the steering yoke.
“I knew it. I knew something like this would happen!” He turned in his seat and watched pub patrons spill out onto the sidewalk, coughing and clutching their pained ears. He hoped beyond hope that his friends would keep Puggles’ identity a secret.
“That’s it. We’re getting the part and we’re out of here! I am never taking you to the Capital again as long as I live!”
Puggles crossed his arms and grumped.
“Suits me jus’ fine. I nebber wanted t’ come here in the first place. Stupid dart. Spinner must’a been warped.”
“The only thing that’s warped is you!” Zeb snarled, so venomously it made Puggles start.
“How much did you have to drink back there? Hmm? Five, six?”
“ Seven. I din’ pay for them if that’s what’s eatin’ ya. I still has all my money.”
“Karabast! I don’t care about the blasted money!”
Puggles slammed his small fist on the dash. “Honestly Zeb, I cain’t fer the life a’ me figger you out. Why is yew is so bowed up?”
Zeb chewed his lip. His anger swelled anew.
“ Because you’re a disgusting alcoholic and you refuse to see it!”
There came an uncomfortable silence. The gentle thrum of the speeder’s engine sounded like a roar in Zeb’s ears.
Shocked and hurt, Puggles turned over in his seat. His body was slumped against the door and his ears were drooping. A minute went by before he spoke. His voice was devoid of emotion.
“Yew jus’ keep on beein’ perfect Zeb. Show us pathetic losers what it’s like t’ be a livin’ god.”
Yeeeah, hopefully it will take me less than sixteen weeks to put up part three.

History
Lobo, whose name comes from a Khund dialect and means "one who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it," is the last of his people for one reason: he killed them all. He hailed from the planet Czarnia which was a virtual paradise that knew nothing of war and the Czarnians were almost immortal. When Lobo was born, his evil was so frighteningly apparent, the nurse who delivered him went insane and became the planet's first mental patient in ten millennia after the infant Lobo chewed off four of her fingers. Lobo knew he was one of a kind, but he wanted even more. Inspired by the idea of genocide, Lobo created a swarm of lethal scorpion-like creatures, he set them on his people wiping out his entire species but himself. He claimed it was a science project and gave himself an 'A'. Since then he has traveled the galaxies collecting bounties. Despite his ruthless nature, Lobo has a strict code of honor when it comes to these agreements. Along the way he has met and battled a number of superheroes.
Omega Men
Lobo played an important role in the Citadel War, in his capacity as a bounty hunter. He was hired by the Citadel's human agent Harry Hokum to capture the Euphorian known as Kalista in a bid to learn the secret behind her home world's planetary shield. Along with fellow bounty hunters Bedlam and Berserk, he raided the mothership belonging to the Omega Men, where upon he engaged in combat with Kalista. Soon after, Harry Hokum hired Lobo once again, this time to assassinate the Omega Men's interim leader Tigorr. Lobo never had the opportunity to complete the contract however.
After the Citadel War ended, Lobo was then hired by Kalista's husband Primus to help them infiltrate a Citadel prison facility and free several of Primus' captured allies. During the prison break, Lobo killed the supreme commander of the surviving Citadel military forces.
Justice League
Lobo made his first appearance on the planet Earth when he was hired by Manga Khan to take out the newly formed Justice League International. But after Big Barda teleported Lobo across the galaxy, Lobo landed on Earth smack in the Justice League Embassy. After a brief altercation with Guy Gardner, Lobo hung around, pretending to be a friend, waiting for the right moment. But before he could act, Manga Khan canceled his contract.
L.E.G.I.O.N.
For a such a fierce bounty hunter and a loner, Lobo still held a few surprises under his brash exterior. He would prove to be more a team player than anyone would think. He kept a secret pod of pet Space Dolphins that he cared for. When one of the dolphins was killed, Lobo tracked the perpetrators to Vril Dox II's newly formed band of freedom fighters, the L.E.G.I.O.N.
Lobo single handily crippled the entire team, but was halted by Vril Dox II, who offered to provide protection for the Space Dolphins in exchange for Lobo's service in the L.E.G.I.O.N. Lobo accepted and accompanied the new team to Cairn, known galaxy wide as the "drug world." There the team dismantled the drug lords' empire by sheer brains and brawn. Vril Dox II also took advantage of Lobo's ability to multiply, which helped them destroy the remainder of Cairn's opposing rulers. During this mission, Dox secretly poisoned Lobo and his clones. Lobo was depowering, lost his ability to multiply, and his clones were destroyed. It was later revealed that one of Lobo's clones escaped to the planet Kannit.
During Lobo's service in the L.E.G.I.O.N., it was clear that he held no personal love for any of his teammates. He followed Vril Dox II's orders out of some sense of honor, but did not hesitate to break both of Garryn Bek's legs. But even Vril Dox II was not immune. When Vril Dox II was raped and killed by Stealth, he too was cloned. Lobo took advantage of Vril Dox II's vulnerability and attempted to kill the clone in order to be free from his pact.
Lobo was sent on an undercover mission to bring down a formidable opponent: the space pirate Dagon-Ra of the planet Trom whose natives have the power to transmute matter. He joined Dagon-Ra's crew and lead a successful mutiny against him.
Superman
Draaga found an intergalactic taxi driver to take him to Earth to get revenge on Superman. Just as they left the bar, Lobo arrived. Lobo was boozing it up at the bar when he heard two aliens in a bar corner discussing the odds of Draaga's return battle with Superman. Lobo got involved in the conversation, and the aliens got Lobo drunk enough to where he accepted a bet that he could kill Superman. Lobo, along with the bar's delivery guy Raof and Bibbo Bibbowski, traveled to the Fortress of Solitude, but Superman wasn't there. While the three were tooling around inside, Superman arrived. Lobo attacked Superman, and the two brawled through the Fortress. Superman escaped to a Kryptonian exo-suit he had, and battled Lobo outside while wearing the suit. Lobo blew the suit up with missiles from his spacehog, and Lobo and Bibbow presumed Superman dead. They then collapsed, both very drunk. It turned out that Superman was safe inside the Fortress, and had faked his death inside the suit.
Mister Miracle
Lord Manga Kahn accidentally captured space-dolphins belonging to Lobo, who came looking for them. After an altercation, Lobo recruited Mister Miracle to help him find his space-dolphins on Mogo.
Guy Gardner
Guy Gardner had to get back on his feet after his fight with Hal Jordan for Sector 2814, so he tried crime fighting ringless. When that didn't work, he enlisted the help of Lobo to go with him to Qward to get Sinestro's ring. Guy and Lobo then retrieved the ring.
Lobo eventually got into a fight with Guy, over the events on Qward.
Breakdowns
Lobo was hired by Lord Manga Kahn to take in Despero. Despero had been currently running rampant on Earth. Lobo tried to take the monster in, but met fierce resistance from the Justice League International and the Justice League Europe. Lobo, the JLE, and the newly formed Conglomerate all launched a frontal assault on Despero, but the monster was able to fend them all off. But Kilowog and L-Ron arrived, and Kilowog accidentally uploaded L-Ron's consciousness into Despero's head. Lord Manga Kahn then paid Lobo his fee for helping take down Despero, and also offered to finance the reconstruction of Times Square.
Superman's Resurrection
At one point, Lobo went back to Earth to prove that he was still better than Superman, even though Superman was resurrected. Along the way, Lobo destroyed a planet called Thanotopsia, which attracted the attention of a group of aliens that followed Lobo to Earth where Lobo confronted Superman in Metropolis. After a battle, Superman punched Lobo into orbit, and Lobo landed on the alien ship where he was attacked by a number of robot bounty hunters. Superman took out the disintegration cannon on the ship and hauled it away from Earth. Superman then caught back up to the ship and helped Lobo defeat the bounty hunters. Lobo then decided to not fight Superman anymore since Superman helped him out.
Miss Tribb
When Vril Dox II later hired Lobo to transport a prisoner to him safe and alive, Lobo thought that the transport normally wouldn't be more than a boring job. It turns out the prisoner in question is not only the person who wrote the book on Lobo, but was also his fourth grade teacher, Miss Tribb. The Legion Of Decency, a group of old women who want to kill Miss Tribb for writing such a nasty book; a group of truckers, after an altercation at a truck stop; the Dnedia Police S.W.A.T. Team after Lobo killed their chief; and the Pan-Galactic Demolition Dance Company after having to get Miss Tribb from their show and slaughtering many of their dance troop were among the groups of enemies Lobo were being tracked by. The only people on his side were a gang calling themselves the Sons of Lobo, not that he cares or even knows.
While each of the groups have their reasons for wanting Lobo and Miss Tribb dead, he eventually falls into the hands of The Orthography Commandos who seek to remove the ignorant and functionally illiterate from the universe. They have a special way of eliminating these so called unwanted by holding a spelling bee. Lobo was smarter than he lets on, especially when he's given words to spell that he likes, such as "Genocide", for example. Things go his way until he makes the mistake of telling these people that Miss Tribb is a teacher. Eventually, Lobo loses his patience with these people and kills them all. Unfortunately, after this situation was sorted out with violence, he contacts Vril Dox II and tells him he's taking a vacation on Revel-7. He does this over an unsecured line and it draws everyone to him like flies.
One world wide riot and massive body count later, Lobo delivers Miss Tribb to Vril Dox II, alive and well, but as soon as Vril receives the old woman, Lobo fixes things so that he is, once again, is the Last Czarnian.
52
Lobo eventually turned his back on his violent ways and became an archbishop in the First Celestial Church of the Triple Fish-God. He became a protector of sorts to a massive colony of refugees from Sector 3500 and also gained possession of the Emerald Eye of Ekron.
He happened to arrive in an asteroid field just in time to kill Devilance, rescuing Animal Man, Adam Strange, and Starfire, who were stranded in space. Starfire negotiated a deal with him, in which he would help them out of their predicament if they helped him with his problems. After helping the heroes defeat Lady Styx, he brought the Emerald Eye to the triple-headed fish god, who agreed to release Lobo from his vow of non-violence in exchange. When told that the Emerald Eye was the only thing that can kill the fish god, Lobo blasted him with it.
One Year Later
After the battle on Apokolips, Lobo's soul was sent to Hell. Lobo's suffering was enough to power Neron's entire region of Hell. When the demons Etrigan and Blue Devil went on a rampage through Hell to seek revenge on Neron, they accidentally freed Lobo from his prison. In order to buy time to fully recover before battling Czarnian, Etrigan stole Blue Devil's soul and told him he would have to fight Lobo to get it back. Lobo however during his rampage through the underworld cut off the magician Zatara's head, which angered his daughter, Zatanna who engaged in an intense battle with him before paralyzing him in place to escape with her team.
Brightest Day
Lobo appeared on Earth to capture a bounty on the Red Lantern Atrocitus's head. After battling Hal Jordan, Carol Ferris and Sinestro, he left without finishing his job. The mystery of his retreat is revealed as the fight was all staged by Atrocitus in order for the latter to gain the trust of the New Guardians. As a payment, Lobo was given a Red Power Ring.
R.E.B.E.L.S.
Still using the Red Power Ring, Lobo was recruited by Vril Dox II, who requires his help battling Brainiac and Pulsar Stargrave. Due to the fact that the Space Church that Lobo oversaw was spending more money than it was taking in, Lobo needed to work for Vril Dox as his personal enforcer. Even losing his Spacehog, Lobo saves the planet Colu, but Brainiac and Pulsar Stargrave escaped.
Lobo later battled Altin Ad'Ms, the Green Lantern of Sector 2828, to a stand still. He was later tricked into thinking that there was another Czarnian still alive, but Astrild Storm-Daughter, using pheromones to confuse Lobo, for this trick he later killed Astrild.
After tracking Astrild's origins to the Psion Homeworld he would go toe to toe with Smite, her friend and ally. The fight would only pause because Lobo was winning and wanted to get drunk instead of fighting. Lobo and Smite go to a bar and share a drink and war stories. He then explains to Smite he shouldn't be mad at him, he should be mad at Starro. Lobo and Smite then attack the now helpless Starro.
Fun Facts
Lobo's favorite color is "Sepulcher Black", which he names his hair color after.
