Mind blowing that this even needs to be said but
Neat run down of all the ways we're poorer now than in 2010. In case you come across anyone honestly asking 'are we more well off after 14 years of tory rule' no. You aren't. Even a little bit.
We analyse a key point of contention in the general election campaign: the government’s record on pay, housing, energy and food bills
It is a simple question – and it will be at the heart of the general election campaign. After 14 years of Conservative government, people are asking: am I any better off?
The answer for most people is – no, you are not better off.
#and no. it was not inevitable#the global financial crisis was inevitable#our government utterly failing to manage that so we went from one to the other was not#we were on track to end child poverty in the UK. look where we are now#that anyone asks this while so many are going hungry is actually a spit in the face#uk politics

How far do you think Heimerdinger got before he realized Viktor probably didn't lock up and instead headed to Jayce?
Heimerdinger, walking home, thinking Viktor might be up to something and remembering this was the way Viktor was looking at Jayce during his trial:
He's known Viktor a long time. He knows that's Viktor's "I have an idea" face.
he probably booked it back to the academy lmao
#heimerdinger probably was like fuck. jayce hes your problem now#thinks about how viktor failed the lab safety course a few times before they convinced him that yeah goggles are important#heimerdinger is like i wanted him to make a friend but not that one#these two science bros are literally just improv dudes who go “yes and” to every hypothesis#sighs when Jayce is like yeah sorry i stole your assistant he's my partner now : 3#sighs again and signs them both up for lab safety again and allocates some of the budget to inevitable repairs#arcane#heimerdinger#jayce talis#viktor arcane

With all of the comparisons of joels wild life skin to skizz pre ep1 and then the reveal of the fast and furious bit ive connected some dots that arent connected
Hear me out, joel is modeling himself after a man with a friends are family and family is everything mentality to hopefully make and maintain friendships (which makes me insane btw) and he just so happens to look like mr loyal himself skizzleman
Like we know the meta of dom toretto n stuff but in universe mayhaps there was a subconscious (or concious but hed never admit that) inspiration
#life series joel has such an interesting progression through the seasons#just him and his wolves in 3rd to mad red wizard no one trusts in last#to getting a taste of an alliance that sticks due to soulmates in double#to trying to recreate that having friends thing but it was cursed to fail and it inevitably drives him mad agin in limited#to starting out distanced from the group he wants to join but before he knows it theyre doing bonding exersises everyday in secret#he doesnt want to be alone and despite the madness and bloodlust is so so loyal frfr#joel smallishbeans#smallishbeans#wild life smp#skizzleman mention

what really fucks me up about a death in the family is that, beyond the fact that jason's death was determined by vote, the fact people could vote as many times as they liked, the closeness of the margin, etc.
it's that the vote wasn't for 'does batman get there in time to save jason' it was for 'when bruce digs through that blown up warehouse, does he find a corpse or a living body.' the vote is for 'does jason get to have enough plot armor to survive getting beaten with a crowbar and then blown up'
either way, batman is too late. he was always going to be too late.
#jason todd#bruce wayne#a death in the family#i don't think i'm explaining it very well#the whole thing with a tragedy is that it's preventable from the outside inevitable from the inside#but on a meta level aditf was still inevitable. bruce being too late to save jason was inevitable no matter how the vote ended up#'what if jason lived' it still would have been a world where bruce failed him. jason living was arbitrary. unrelated to bruce's actions#disclaimer i haven't read robin lives. if jason lived because bruce got there in time to save him before the bomb went off#well#it came like. what. 35 years too late

This is a very very unfinished thought but I've been thinking a lot as I reread the books about how the women of House of the Dragon don't really get catharsis and how that'll likely be worse in S2. Say what you want about asoiaf but a number of named women there experience catharsis.
They kill their abusers (Lysa, Cersei, Dany). They regain some agency after a violation (Lysa, Cersei, Lady Stoneheart, Dany), and they refuse to forgive the people complicit in their subjugation (Lysa, Cersei, Dany, Lady Stoneheart, Jeyne Westerling).
Obviously, three or four isn't enough in such an expansive cast of characters but the point remains that they claw back their autonomy however they have to. They're allowed to be angry, bitter, unforgiving and cruel to their abusers in a way women in House of the Dragon just aren't allowed. They're allowed grief, grief that is violent and destructive.
The women of House of the Dragon don't get angry. They stand around and stare plaintively at the camera, they cry prettily, and they plead for peace and non-violence. They suffer and suffer and suffer and there's no relief.
#although dany doesn't really set out to kill her abuser#in fact she doesn't really think of him as her abuser#but the fact remains that her story begins with his death#she gains her dragons and agency through his death#lysa murdering jon arryn#lysa not going to riverrun when hoster is on his deathbed despite cat's letters#she denies him relief for his crimes against her and it's one of my favourite moments in asoiaf#cersei killing robert#cersei eating robert's children taking back reproductive autonomy from the man that hurt her#lady stoneheart turning her grief and pain onto the riverlands#she hangs freys boltons and lannisters uncaringly#it's a failing of the storytelling because this is supposed to be the feminist retelling of the dance#but instead the misogyny that leads up to the dance has been defanged.#the point of the show has been obscured behind endless arguments of the supposed illegitimacy of rhaenyra's first three children#the women fighting for power have been replaced by evil men perched on their shoulders telling them to do bad things#they're helpless victims carried along by the stream of inevitability#or something idk#also i am not including alicent trying to take luke's eye and injuring rhaenyra as cathartic because they are not the cause of her sufferin#house of the dragon#not asoiaf thoughts#daenerys targaryen#lysa arryn#cersei lannister#lady stoneheart#alicent hightower#rhaenyra targaryen#helaena targaryen#rhaenys targaryen

Thinking about how Dakota is a perfect candidate for being stuck in a time loop. He so desperately wants to save everyone, do the right things, be a good person, friend, nephew, son, hero
Thinking of how at every opportunity he would risk his life to save the people he cares about but he is destined to fail, not because he can’t save people, but because he insists on doing it alone
He needs help, he needs his team, he needs support. He is a great hero but not alone, he cannot do it alone. And at the end of the day he’d get out of the loop not by saving everyone, because he has to lose Ashe there’s no other way, but by working with his team and moving forward together
And even then he doesn’t leave the clutches of the loop, he may not be reliving the same day, the same fight, but he loses sight of working as a team and gets trapped again believing he has to do it all alone
Just Dakota Cole finding himself in a time loop and when he inevitably breaks free he traps himself in one of his own creation

I saw you holding the gun. I was afraid that it might accidentally go off. I was afraid that you would get injured.
#never let me go#never let me go the series#nuengdiao kiattrakulmethee#palm pannakorn jannaloy#1x01#1x03#1x06#1x11#parallels#phuwin tangsakyuen#pond naravit#gifset#*brace's#//#I honestly thought this set would be about 20 gifs long 😅#took me months to outline the final draft...#I called this project 2 Fears because it's about the two fears Palm mentions after disarming Nueng at the pool#the 1st is that “the gun might accidentally go off”. which can happen. but usually when the person carrying it is inexperieced.#he's afraid Nueng might make a mistake and injure someone he has no intention to (at that moment‚ Palm‚ or—even worse—himself)#which is linked to his 2nd fear: Nueng getting hurt#well. as his bodyguard (and later his friend/lover)‚ naturally that's one of Palm's primary concerns.#now. what I think is interesting here is#although these two fears can and do coexist#they inevitably clash with each other#because Palm wants Nueng to know how to use a gun—carefully and skillfully. because Nueng is being targeted‚ and he might need to.#but Palm doesn't want Nueng to need to#he doesn't want Nueng to be (or to put himself) in danger#it's his duty to keep him safe#Nueng should know how to defend himself‚ but if he actually does it himself‚ then Palm has failed at his job#because he's always supposed to be between Nueng and the danger

i do still think datv feels very … disconnected from the previous trilogy, and that parts of it don’t really Feel like dragon age to me. that being said, i’m still having a fun time
#txt#sophie plays datv#datv spoilers#i kind of went into the game expecting this though after reading reviews#i still think BioWare really failed with not having a world state import#datv definitely suffers from not having those little callbacks from previous games that made the others feel connected#i also agree with what a few people have said about the accents being all over the place for each region#i think all the new factions and regions and things aren’t helping either#because they’re new and don’t feel the same as previous games - and there’s no little threads of familiarity to help with that#and a lot of these places have been so hyped for 10+ years that they inevitably probably don’t feel as good as i expected them to#all that being said I am still having fun though#despite the hand-holdy storytelling and disconnectedness#I can just tell that datv won’t be my fave instalment in the series tho rip#oh another gripe i have is that rook really has no personal investment in the main storyline#like??? why should they care???#every previous protag has been intrinsically connected to what’s going on#rook just feels like a random picked off the street to save the world#it all feels a little impersonal to me but whatever

Wanted to send an ask as well to hopefully provide some distraction from…recent events.
Are there any parts of world building in the TF IDW universe that you wish were explored/expanded upon more? Or that you want to explore in your writing? Like certain aspects of pre-war Cybertron, cybertronian culture, post-war Cybertron, etc?
Okay this is actually perfectly timed for a rant I wanted to go on about the way mnemosurgery is written in IDW1 because I hate how JRO basically made it an ontologically evil field of medicine both intrinsically and in terms of the average person who does it, like
First of all I want to preface this by saying I'm not accusing JRO of having any particular beliefs, this is just my commentary on how things came off and how his writing style contributes to both virtues and flaws in his writing. So I might say "he's basically saying this" but in the sense of "unfortunate implications, accidental or purposeful, in his writing."
But like... it makes me so mad because the worldbuilding around mnemosurgery kind of makes no sense to me? It seems like a really fucking wasted opportunity to cast basically every mnemosurgeon in the continuity as evil and to make it so that even just doing mnemosurgery is basically a toxic, destructive act that will literally kill you? Honestly, I don't think JRO even came up with mnemosurgery as like, "here's a thing that exists in this world and how it works" so much as, he took a character-first approach to writing (as he always does) and wrote mnemosurgery to work whatever way would work best for Chromedome and other character-related conflicts and plot points.
Like, mnemosurgery can view/alter memories from a living person but from a dead person it can only get moments from right before death. Makes sense. Mnemosurgery slowly kills you every time you do it??? Uh... honestly that comes off more as a handwave to make it so that any time the LL needs information they can't just needle it straight out of whoever's mind they need bc of course Chromedome can only do it when it's really important after all. Mnemosurgery... is only ever used for brainwashing people? Like, literally every mnemosurgeon except Chromedome is evil (and cartoonishly so, for Trepan and Sunder, like literally unredeemable monsters in every way) and any time they actually enjoy their field of medicine it's bc they're a sadist that likes to manipulate and oppress people? Kind of... uncreative.
Mnemosurgery is ADDICTIVE?? You're addicted to needling people's brains because mnemosurgery is ontologically evil and then it literally kills you? Okay like... do I even need to explain how tone-deaf it is to incorporate addiction of all things into the worldbuilding here? "You're an addict which makes you dangerous to society. The good ones stop doing the addictive thing because they're morally strong/care about others/aren't hedonists, but the bad ones who only care about doing their drug of choice are evil because the fact that they don't quit shows that they don't care about other people and OF COURSE the main/only fate that awaits addicts is their inevitable death by their own addiction!" Like, we get enough of that shit in real life, JRO. Did you really have to take an already heavily stigmatized condition like ADDICTION and slap it onto your ontologically evil mnemosurgery where the evil ones are evil because they love abusing/manipulating people and don't care enough about dying to stop being addicted to mnemosurgery? Come the fuck on.
Like, I understand that "the science of studying/altering memories" is heavily laden with nightmare fuel as is, and I don't have a problem with that (and stuff like the Institute) because the mind/memories are an intrinsic part of personhood, so any scientific field around it (or any government that wants to sponsor it) will abuse that knowledge just like with any other field of medicine. But to use human examples, why the fuck does mnemosurgery have to be inherently evil? What about stuff like Alzheimer's that degrades ppl's memories to the point of not even remembering a few seconds ago? Wouldn't it be beautiful if mnemosurgery could help with that? What about psychological issues where maybe people with intense PTSD/trauma/etc could have their worst memories be removed/dulled so that they become mentally stable enough for psychiatric/therapeutic interventions to become effective? What if someone has a TBI and wants help recovering the memories they lost?
What about non-scary, non-medicinal applications of mnemosurgery? What if someone just really treasures the memory of a particular day with their best friend and visits a mnemosurgery every couple years so that information creep doesn't slowly alter their memories of that precious day? What if it was possible for mnemosurgeons to intensify memories, so that maybe someone could have a happy memory intensified and think of it any time they're sad, struggling, having mental health struggles, etc? What if mnemosurgeons could take/copy memories from people's brains and convert them to video format in a way that other people could watch it? Imagine the sheer potential present in that when it comes to preserving history through literal firsthand testimonials of what happened! What if a mnemosurgeon could transfer memories from one person to another-- what kinds of breakthroughs in empathy, communication, and understanding others could happen if you could LITERALLY see a conflict from another person's perspective? In those ways, mnemosurgeons would basically be able to act as a hybrid of doctor, psychologist, diplomat, mediator, and archivist all in one!
But no... instead we just got "Mnemosurgery is evil and pretty much only used for brainwashing, 99.8% of all mnemosurgeons are evil creeps, oh by the way it's also addicting and will literally kill you if you do it too much." SMFH.
#squiggle answers#meta#idk if my contempt for the addiction part comes off strongly enough. like#as it is addiction is already spun as a moral failing by ppl who only care about getting high and not about hurting themselves/others#so like. why would you take addiction and apply it as an element of worldbuilding where indulging that addiction literally makes you evil#(or rather where the only ppl who continuously indulge their addiction are evil and just like doing it)#you wanna know something? IRL more addicts get sober than die of overdoses. ODing and being addicted forever is THE MINORITY#BEING AN ADDICT DOESN'T DOOM YOU TO DYING BY YOUR OWN SUPPOSED VICES AND LACK OF SELF CONTROL#getting clean is THE NORM and not the exception! so why in the hell would you write it into your fictional story#and make it so that not only are most of these addicts evil people but they'll also all inevitably die bc of their addiction???#this sort of worldbuilding literally propagates the idea that addicts are doomed to die in the majority of cases (patently untrue)#and like frames the ppl who are addicted as basically being evil and choosing to continue needling people#that's not how real life addiction works. like at all. irl addicts don't destroy their health w drugs bc they love doing it#but yeah in general JRO kind of has this issue with black and white morality. you see it pop up everywhere in his writing#his depiction of mnemosurgery comes off as one of those trademark JRO#'here is your sign that this character is evil and unredeemable bc they do this thing that's inherently evil'#kind of things. and as someone recently getting into studying addiction as a social issue it sucks ass

Actually I can't stop thinking about Tim gaining a bit of weight during her time as Persephone and it's killing me now
#she's been an immortal for so long she has no idea how she looked before the lunar war#she was 3-4 years younger and matured during that time despite the starvation#and she probably got a buzzcut when she was drafted but nobody kept up with hair regulations bc they couldn't see each other enough#for them to be enforced#After she first got mechanized the eyes were just one of the many parts of ger body she didn't recognize#and it competed in importance with the weight loss and aging and new scars and more#But when she sees herself at a healthy weight as Persephone bc she hasn't had a complete death in so long that she's managed to hold weight#she just cries because she thinks this is how she must have once looked#though her memory fails to give her any confirmation. she can only guess#she sees in the mirror a person who didn't feast on the corpses she could find#and she can pretend she actually Is Persephone- not Tim#that she's lived a happy olympian life and has never died and that she doesn't occasionally unwillingly salivate over brains in the acheron#and the worst part is she Knows this is temporary#her fantasy and joy is limited#limited until the day she doesn't throw a grenade far enough again or the day she annoys Ashes enough to set her on fire#she can't stay this way for the eternity she is so damned to#and once she does experience a full body reset it's an uphill climb to regain that weight again- if she manages to not die in that time#it's the inevitability of it all that really gets me#and also Ashes obviously thinks Tim looking healthier- well taken care of- is hot as fuck. tho they think Tim always looks hot as fuck#but they don't understand why she freezes when they run a hand along her chest now- unable to even feel her ribs unless they press down#or why she starts making flimsy excuses to leave whenever they offer to take her out on their arson runs

They gotta kill the warden off in dav tbh. Not even because it's time in game but cause fans aren't letting that walking corpse REST
#girlbob.txt#da#i want a memorial in weisshaupt or something like let them die let them REST#they arent the mc anymore and the dark ritual was a desperate attempt of prolonging the inevitable#which nobody can blame them for. of course almost every origin would have some desire to not live a short life but like#theyve already gotten more than they couldve asked for. enough.#disclaimer i am not actually implying all wardens did the dark ritual. i just talked specifically about those wardens for the entire post#and then realized i never specified#anyway the warden failed to find a cure the end they couldn't escape the tragedy of the fate thrust on them just delay it#its a good tragedy that fits with origins imo
