truly do not understand workplace drama. we're stuck here doing stupid bullshit for 8 hours and you want to make it worse? But on the other hand I love hearing about arguments that are not and never will be my problem

anyway you should always remember that all those foreigners you see dying on the news are just as real people as you are who have just as much interiority as you do. there is nothing about you that makes you more important and it is by pure chance that you are not in their position. in fact, this holds for all of history. every person, no matter the horror of the fate that befell them, had just as much interiority as you do. i feel like some people haven't fully internalized this.

It’s imperative that if you spend most of your time around white people (at work) that you have a diverse group of friends for no other reason than if you don’t and you need to get a wisdom tooth out and are told you can’t eat rice for weeks that no one will understand how big of an issue that is.
Mentioned this to my work buddies and they were totally unfazed.
Mentioned this at dinner with friends and a whole silence fell over the table and someone with a shocked expression asked me what I was going to eat. I said “potatoes, I guess” and everyone grimaced.
#shock in Indian/chinese/mexican/puerto rican#like we all do eat other carbs like roti plantains tortillas etc. but it’s the staple everyday food#also this is not potato slander it’s just not meant to be a staple carb imo#shutupbibs#personal

the best thing about tumblr is that you can watch a show and then you come here and someone has made a gifset of it and you can put it on your blog like a sticker in a journal

it turns out a lot of people are actually on the same page about whether or not they'd work if they didn't have to earn money, we just all seem to have wildly different definitions of what counts as work. i'll see one person say "of course i would, i'd still want to create art and volunteer in my local community" and another say "hell no i wouldn't, i'd quit work and just create art and volunteer in my local community" and then they look at eachother like they said something incomprehensible.
#agree#I generally fall into the camp of volunteering is work but it’s not WORK#my job is draining my volunteering is tiring but emotionally and socially reinvigorating#this conversation is about the constraint we feel in our jobs#if art and volunteering had some of the same requirements then more people would view them as work#or maybe we would if they were the only thing we had going on?

when I was a kid I read a sci-fi story where some researcher discovers that all crocodiles since prehistory have had the same congenital heart defect, so they set about curing it. when they do, suddenly their research specimen starts getting stronger and healthier and growing rapidly and developing new appendages, and it turns out all crocodilians were actually stunted sickly forms of dragons. that story really stuck with me because it's basically an expression of the "what if I went to the doctor and they discovered I was deficient in one special vitamin and then I took a pill and all my problems and ailments vanished immediately" fantasy.
unrelated, I started taking daily antihistamines this month for the first time in my life,
#yeah that was literally me three years ago#I was constantly sick and tired and then I realized I was allergic to like everything in the air#and needed to be taking antihistamines constantly#this really describes the experience of being able to live normally

I have now read All Systems Red from The Murderbot Diaries, and I think the main charm of it is I went in fully expecting a "Humans treat robots like appliances then some of them slowly learn not to because of This One Special Example" but instead the crew immediately goes "No, Murderbot is a person. Look at it, it's got anxiety."
Meanwhile, Murderbot itself is like "Why was I cursed with a face. Please treat me like an appliance so I don't have to make eye contact with any of you. I've got anxiety."

Rewatched The Good Place for the first time since s4 dropped and. Oh my god. The Good Place said "people are a result of their environment but we always have a moral responsibility to be better" and The Good Place said "every day the world gets a little more complicated and it gets a little harder to be good" and The Good Place said "even in the face of total nihilism, when nothing you do will matter, you still have to at least try. Because trying is better than the alternative" and The Good Place said "if you have bills to pay and shit to deal with you don't have time or energy to become a better person" and then The Good Place really said "people get better when they get external love and support. How can we hold it against them when they don't " and THEN The Good Place really said "no one is irredeemable. Everyone can try to be better today than they were yesterday" AND THEN! The Good Place said "Heaven is just enough time with the people that you love" OH MY FUCKING GOD.
