Qifrey does not want Olruggio to know about both his failing eyesight and his goals, so he ends up completely wiping Olruggio's memory of those things, and laments that Olruggio is a kind person, and one who would most likely forgive him again, but also one who would try to save him, even when he didn't want to be saved. He also apologized right up until the moment Olruggio's memories of his secret were gone. In general I think chapter 40 is the somewhat toxic guy yuri chapter ever. I'm very tired so I do not know how to explain any of this, I just thought "wow Orufrey reminds me of this one poll I saw on Tumblr" and then spent three days straight hunting for your blog before completely forgetting my reasoning for Orufrey being yuri right before I submitted this."

For Joongdok: "Well first of all Yoo Joonghyuk has a whole arc that is transfem coded as hell (has a power/technique that can technically only be used by women but somehow he can also use it, for a time he even turns into a woman to wield it and it's. "Deadpan, forthright, and unapologetically candid, Kanamori never hesitates to voice her thoughts, no matter how harsh or unvarnished they may be. She is often deemed as impolite, ruthless or severely intimidating (by adults and peers her age alike), and is jokingly compared to the likes of the Yakuza. She’s regarded with a degree of caution, due to her unwavering no-nonsense attitude and the fact that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants, phone camera at the ready to capture any slip up that could potentially be used as blackmail later. Survival is her top priority, looking out for herself and whoever might be left behind unfairly by circumstance. She has a steadfast mind for business and strong work ethic, openly admitting to her desire for monetary compensation (or other favors and methods of payment, such as milk or food) for even the smaller and most mundane of tasks, and won’t shy away from charging fellow members of the club as well.

She firmly holds the belief that friendship is an idealized and glorified notion. To her, individuals referred to as "friends" are often mere products of chance, brought together by shared interests and nothing more. Sayaka adamantly refrains from using the term "friend" and readily corrects anyone who mistakenly categorizes her coworkers or those she spends time with as such. She befittingly conveyed this perspective of hers to Midori on the very day they first crossed paths, and this prompted Midori to freely opt out of using the label entirely as well, instead referring to her closest peers as “comrades” ever since.

Regardless of this, Sayaka prefers to achieve a level of coexistence, as she personally describes it, with those she truly cares about, such as the few other club members. While not explicitly considering the girls as her friends, her actions reveal a deep concern for their well-being. She often watches over them, remains by their side and is ready to defend them and their cause whenever necessary. A significant reason the club came to be in the first place is Sayaka's recognition of her classmates' immense artistic potential. She encouraged them to establish their own independent studio, enabling them to create their animated films, attain recognition, and reap profits from their efforts.

In her role as their producer, she's primarily motivated by financial gain, but as she reviews Midori's and Tsubame's work, she ensures they always have the option to do their job efficiently and avoid overexerting themselves if they ever choose to do so. She’s equally supportive of their goals and will often assure them that their art is more than good enough. She insists that their work is already impressive; therefore, they could forgo so much self-imposed pressure and stop doubting their abilities or attaching undue importance to others' unhelpful criticisms, as these are often incongruent with their own artistic sensibilities and convictions.

Sayaka lacks interest and doesn’t possess much insight about art herself, yet she is more than willing to learn from her team to become a better producer. Aside from having a keen eye for business since her early childhood (despite being bad at math), she also appears to be quite knowledgeable in a wide variety of topics, and will take people by surprise whenever she starts rambling about the ins-and-outs of something that’s relevant at any given moment. One time, someone pointed out that Kanamori wasn’t at all different from Asakusa on this regard, to which Tsubame responded with a simple and knowing “yup”.

She can be seen idly cracking the knuckles of her right hand every now and then, and rarely displays a different emotion as she goes about her day donning a neutral grimace on her face. Kanamori almost only ever smiles when she’s getting paid, when friendly mocking someone, or when she’s in the middle of twisting someone’s arm to hers and the club’s advantage.

I’m going to cut it here, since I realized I have much more to say about Sayaka than any other Eizouken member so far (I thought Midori was going to be the longest but this one was already effortlessly surpassing 700 words and counting. Good god) Please please PLEASE consider voting for her!! she’s an amazing character in general, and I can easily see why she’s Sumito Oowara’s personal favorite of the bunch."

also (CONTAINS SPOILERS) her brother once told her that he loved her magic just as it was and that he hoped she never stopped making it and being herself (paraphrased cuz i don't remember the actual quote!) and she took that literally to mean that she shouldn't make magic that wasn't the kind of magic that was hers- i.e. shiny, small, ornate, and detailed magic. Being forced to change how she made her magic in order to "do things the proper way" during her original apprenticeship caused her intense distress, and she'd often refuse to do so and would instead think up her own magic to solve problems instead of doing things by the book. Doing that subjected her to harassment and abuse from her original professor, leading to her eventually needing to leave her 'traditional' witch apprenticeship and get her apprenticeship done at Qifrey's atelier, a place far removed from the main witch cities that accommodates her and allows her to grow the way she wants to."

We have 705 offers by 527 creators (I've had to update this three times while writing this post!). Of those, 97 are offering to work in ANY fandom! The rest have signed up offering fanworks in 273 fandoms, including 177 write-in fandoms! (To compare that with roughly the same time last year, as we approached 24 hours left to sign up for FTH2022 we had 680 offers from 525 creators in 257 fandoms including 153 write-ins … meaning we have 23 more offers in 16 more fandoms by the same number of creators for 2023 … SO FAR.)

Story Pile: Afterschool Dice Club

Hey this is a blog where I tell you stories about games so what if I told you about a story that tells you stories about games? Well, would you believe there’s an entire anime in the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things genre that’s just… about games?

No no no – not videogames. Nor making videogames. Not any of those anime about MMORPGs. Not even the ones that are tie-ins to games like the Atelier or Persona or Legend of Mana anime. I mean an anime about board games. Yeah, I found one of those!

It’s really mid! And I love it!

Afterschool Dice Club is an anime so tepid in its overall hook that it sounds like a setup to a twist. It’s an anime about a small group of friends, in high school, who start a board game club. They play board games with one another. They have names and individual experiences and anxieties about being the age they are in the place they are, but none of them are remarkable, or challenging standouts that you’d be surprised to hear about. One of them has transferred mid-semester. One of them is afraid of being left behind. One of them is maybe crushing on a boy. This anime is some mild tea, which means the next thing to ask, is, okay, if that’s what happens in it, what’s it about?

When an anime is ‘about’ something it’s often actually about one specific author’s specifically narrow vision of what that thing is. Sometimes this works out to the benefit of the work – Beck is an anime that benefits immensely from being about the music that its author thinks of as important, because even if that’s a narrow collection of artworks to build out of, that collection is still definitionally something that you need expertise to represent, and the way the manga and anime represent that demonstrates that the author is meaningfully aware of true things about the form they’re commenting on. Sometimes you’ll see an anime that wants to be ‘about’ something that doesn’t seem to understand anything about what it’s talking about.

I wouldn’t conventionally call it one of your healing anime. It’s not an anime where relationships are pre-eminent. It’s not a story where there’s long, indulgent shots of things that are meant to make you go that’s nice. It’s structured almost like a sports anime, but because it has to explain to you the sports each episode, the stakes can’t really get higher. There’s no ‘best’ or ‘drive’ in it. It’s just learning about a new thing every week.

The term I feel applies here is authenticity, and when it comes to authenticity, well, Afterschool Dice Club absolutely authentic. It’s not about board games as the author imagines them, or board games the way that lesser games are about ‘a card game’ where they have to break the rules to make tension or drama happen in the story. It’s about actual, real, commercial product board games you can go to a store and buy and play right now. In fact, if you watch the anime episode on a game, you can probably play the game. The sections of rules explainers in the anime are detailed enough that they’re clipped out on Youtube to serve as rules explainers for how to play the game, like Watch it Played was about adorable girls rather than an adorable Rodney. Sorry Rodney.

There’s a taste to the games I consider somewhat classical. There’s obviously a bias towards German games, but it’s more a sampling preference. This anime doesn’t seem to have a love for representing social or negotiated games – these are games that are sometimes criticised for being wholly isolated, where players can play the game without crossing any kind of language barrier. People place their pieces and let their gameplay do the talking for them. These are fine games – I particularly like Diamante, as an example of a really good, pure game with a tight engine that puts you very close to some decisions. I also love Cockroach Poker, a game that I have owned and never gotten to play with anyone who isn’t paying to be there, because the game is an anxiety engine.

Which is how they represent it.

A lot of what you watch anime for is to basically be advertised to. You’re tuning into something that’s using a story as a vehicle to show you things that you can then merchandise your love for. You wanna see cool characters being cool and neat mecha and amazing character moments and things that the great anime industry can then, somehow, turn into money through giving you opportunities to express your love through money. It’s not even a joke, the anime industry as I understand it is essentially trying to sell you being a fan of this anime specifically. It’s why so many anime have been trying to key into pre-existing fandoms, like light novels and the like.

I feel like the thing Afterschool Dice Club is trying to get you to get into is like, following their youtube channel for game tutorials. It’s a niche interest that feels like maybe someone who runs a board game store franchise was trying to finance it into existence. And like, surely that’s not true. Surely that financial conspiracy is nonsense, just natural paranoia bubbling away that nobody makes anime for nice reasons. Which isn’t true, lots of anime get made for nice reasons! But the people making it are nice, the people signing their cheques, those people are buttholes.

And I don’t know what they’re getting out of it.

There’s a message towards the end of the story. I’m always reluctant when I want to refer to ‘the message’ of an anime, or what a story is trying to do as opposed to what I get out of it, what my impression was, but in the case of Afterschool Dice Club there’s a very clear, very specific incident in the last episode, where the players play a communication memory game, and then explicitly use the language of that game to talk to one another about their feelings.

I talk about the idea that games are ways we can practice emotions. In Afterschool Dice Club, the story is about kids who aren’t good at talking about their feelings using games to give themselves the language to do that. That’s cool! That’s demonstrative! That might be markedly non-typical ways of learning communication methods! This may be an anime for dorks like me with macaroni soup for brains that makes us like board games and then shows ways that we can make words in that macaroni soup.

Wenn man von Zuhause weg ist merkt man erst wie schön es dort ist. Ich bin gerade für drei Monate alleine in Neuseeland um dort Urlaub zu machen. Ich dachte zum einen dass ich mir eine Auszeit verdient hab und zum anderen dass ich viel dazu lernen werde, wenn ich alleine reise. Es ist schon so viel schief gegangen, ich musste Telefonate führen, schnell neue Leute kennen lernen, viel alleine unternehmen und klarkommen ohne die ganze Zeit meinen Freund dazu haben der mich umarmt und bei dem ich immer das Gefühl bekomme, dass alles gut wird. Und gleichzeitig vermisse ich Zuhause sehr, ich vermisse meine Katze, ich vermisse es ins Atelier zu gehen, ich vermisse meine Freunde. Es ist gut, dass ich hier bin. Ich weiß als ich Zuhause war, wollte ich überhaupt nicht dort sein, ich konnte nicht abwarten mich endlich zu verpissen. Und jetzt bin ich hier und so einfach ist es dann doch irgendwie nicht. Ich gehe zum Strand und was mach ich dann da alleine ? So viele Aktivitäten basieren darauf dass man sie zusammen mit einem anderen Menschen macht. Ich muss mich daran erinnern, dass ich hier sein möchte und nicht Zuhause. Dass es Zuhause kalt ist und schneit und hier die Sonne scheint. Ich muss daran denken, dass ich hier keinen Stress hab, dass ich hier bin um zu entspannen und nicht um an mein Leben in München zu denken. Was ich nicht vermisse ist Arbeiten. Und das ist was ich tun muss wenn ich zurück komme. Vielleicht nicht direkt aber auf jeden Fall Recht bald. Ein guter Grund nicht wieder nachhause zu wollen. Und ich denke das ein großer Teil gar kein richtiges Vermissen ist. Wenn ich ehrlich bin, natürlich ist es schade dass mein Freund nicht hier ist. Aber ich glaube an dem Punkt des richtigen Vermissens bin ich noch gar nicht. Momentan vermisse ich nur den Komfort. Hier muss ich mir Gedanken machen ob mein Geld reicht, wo ich als nächstes hinfahre, wo ich als nächstes Schlafe. Zuhause musste ich nur daran denken wie mein nächster Tag aussehen soll. Reisen ist was schönes, auch wenn es sich nicht immer gut anfühlt.

"Lernt schwimmen." - Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde im Schauspiel Stuttgart 💚

„Sind Sie vom Haus?“, fragt mich die Dame im Shop freundlich, als ich mir meinen obligatorischen Merch und ein Programmheft kaufe. Leider nein, ich bin tatsächlich erst zum zweiten Mal bewusst hier im Schauspiel Stuttgart, aber ich werde unter Garantie in Zukunft öfter hier sein (und nicht nur, weil ich wahnsinnig gespannt auf Eure Cabaret Produktion im März bin). Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde von Erich Kästner, inszeniert von Viktor Bodó, hat zu diesem Entschluss in jedem Fall einiges beigetragen.

Genau wie das wunderbare Buch, auf dem es basiert, schafft es die Inszenierung, bunt und groß und laut und lustig, aber gleichzeitig auch wahnsinnig feinfühlig und berührend zu sein - und extrem aktuell, trotz oder gerade wegen der Zeit, in der das Geschehen spielt.

Das Stück startet direkt mit einem wortwörtlichen Knall, und genau so geht es auch weiter. Das sich drehende, vielseitige und detaillierte Bühnenbild, vor allem der Club zu Beginn, sowie die tollen Kostüme entführen vom Look her direkt ins Jahr 1930. Es wird gesungen, getanzt und eine Discokugel über die Bühne gefahren (was nebenbei bemerkt einen sehr schönen Effekt an der Saaldecke erzeugt). Man sieht gerne zu und lässt sich von dem großen, gut gelaunten Ensemble mitnehmen, dessen Mitglieder teilweise eine ganze Reihe von unterschiedlichen Rollen übernehmen.

Irene Moll (Therese Dörr), die die hier mitsamt ihrem Mann (Michael Stiller) eigentlich fast liebenswürdig ist, würde man nur gerne ein paar Takte über Consent zurufen, wenn sie direkt mit Augenbinde und Seilen um die Ecke kommt, aber es sei ihr (und dem Publikum) gegönnt.

Für die Szene im Atelier von Ruth Reiter (Sylvana Krappatsch) werden alle Geschütze der Bühnentechnik aufgefahren und ein kleiner, rot beleuchteter und „benebelter“ Raum unter der Bühne kreiert. Auch hier noch einmal Lob und Liebe in Richtung Kostüm - Kleider für die Herren und Anzüge für die Damen.

Wahnsinnig viel Spaß machen auch die vielen aber doch gut dosierten Durchbrechungen der „vierten Wand“, wenn zum Beispiel Labude (Felix Strobel) seine Requisite „vergessen“ hat und das Publikum um Zigaretten bitten muss, unter Beteiligung von Lichttechnik („Jörg!“ Schuchardt), Maske und anderen eine große Umbauaktion stattfindet, oder die Souffleurin der Vermieterin Frau Hohlfeld (auch großartig: Gabriele Hintermaier) „zu Hilfe eilen“ muss.

So schnell, bunt und stimmungsvoll die erste Hälfte ist, kippt die Situation bald nach der Pause in verschiedene Richtungen, für Fabian sowohl privat als auch beruflich. Die, wie Kästner in einem Vorwort zu seinem Buch 1946 schrieb, „der wirtschaftlichen folgende seelische Depression“ hinterlässt ihre Spuren, bei allen Figuren. Besonders berührend und mit wie ich fand beeindruckender Leistung von Gábor Biedermann und Felix Strobel (der mir auch schon im Besuch der Alten Dame aufgefallen war und auf den ich mich sehr in Don Carlos freue, ebenso wie auf Gábor Biedermann in Cabaret) ist dann der schlimme und traurige „Höhepunkt“: die Szene, in der Labude Fabian seinen Abschiedsbrief vorträgt. Sein Ende ist leise, der Schuss bleibt ohne Ton. Ein krasser Kontrast vor allem zur ersten Hälfte der Inszenierung, was es aber umso eindrucksvoller wirken lässt.

Schnell kommt dann auch das recht abrupte Ende des Stücks. Wenn Fabian uns von seinem Ertrinken - beim Versuch, einen Jungen eben davor zu retten - berichtet und dafür in die Ich-Form wechselt, während der Erzähltext sonst immer in der außenstehenden Perspektive der Vorlage belassen wurde, horcht man bereits auf. Doch dann geht der Text unerwartet (zumindest, wenn man den Roman kennt) weiter, schlägt einen Bogen zurück zu einer Textstelle, die ich sowieso wahnsinnig gern habe: „Ich weiß ein Ziel, aber es ist leider keines. Ich möchte helfen, die Menschen anständig und vernünftig zu machen. Vorläufig bin ich damit beschäftigt, sie auf ihre diesbezügliche Eignung hin anzuschauen.“ Es folgt der Bezug zur damaligen Zeit, zum Krieg, zu Labude, der Politik und zu Europa - und damit auch zur Gegenwart. „Und jetzt sitzen wir wieder im Wartesaal, und wieder heißt er Europa!“ Erstaunlich und traurig eigentlich, dass dieser Text heute wieder oder immer noch genau so funktioniert.

Der (übrigens voll besetzte) Saal wird dunkel, aber über der Bühne leuchtet ein Schriftzug auf: „Lernt schwimmen.“ Der Applaus ist laut zum Abschluss dieses tollen Theaterabends, der mir auf jeden Fall sehr lange in sehr guter Erinnerung bleiben wird. Wenn möglich, würde ich die Erinnerung sogar gerne mit einem zweiten (oder dritten) Besuch auffrischen und noch Neues daran entdecken.

Liste: Konzerte, die ich 2022 besucht habe

Beginnen wir, ausnahmsweise, die Revuepassierung des Jahres 2022 mal mit den Konzerten des Jahres, und zwar dieses Mal als komplette Auflistung von mir erlebter Konzerte, inklusive kleiner Einschätzungen. Programmatisches zu den Listen dieses Jahres zu späterer Zeit, an anderer Stelle.

Messer, 25.02.2022, Internet (oder: surreale Brache via CfL)

Vor der Rückkehr ins Analoge ein letzter Gruß ins Digitale, und das an einem Tag, den ich größtenteils mit der Sichtung von Nachrichtentickern verbracht hatte. Sich da zwischen die Avatare reihen zu können, erst körperlos-fixiert, dann als tatsächliche Figur, hatte eine gute Wirkung, war irgendwie immersiv, aber auch verfremdend. Die Doppelexistenz der Band als Aufzeichnung und Spielfigur, an diesem Ort zwischen postindustrieller Brache und eisiger Ur-Höhle, bereitete uns ganz beiläufig auf die Rückkehr in die Welt vor - und gestand dem Digitalen doch eine eigene Räumlichkeit, einen eigenen Reiz zu. Preisgekrönt, all das, mittlerweile, übrigens.

Dua Lipa, 11.05.2022, Lanxess Arena

Dann also zurück in den Raum, durchaus krude-aufgeregt, wie ich es vielleicht auch früher vor diesen großen Konzerten war, irgendwie aber auch angespannt im mangelnden Wissen darüber, wie denn nun mit den besseren Tickets so einer Eventim-Auswahl umzugehen ist. Erst gaben wir also alles, den Deluxe-Preis mit Weißwein wettzumachen, lernten währenddessen in Kantinen-artigen Reihen neue Seiten solcher Groß-Konzerte kennen, stolperten dann zu einer irgendwie doch guten Griff in die Ränge, irrten herum, doch als wir dann saßen, kickte ein hervorragendes Set mit Hippiequatsch, ausproduzierten Auftritten, Rollschuhen und allgemeingültigen Hits voll in uns rein, als Pop-Transzendenz.

Casper, 12.05.2022, Den Atelier

Gegenprogramm tags drauf: Mit dem Zug nach Saarbrücken, mit dem Auto nach Luxemburg, dort in einer homogenen Masse aufgehen, sich in Saarland-Asozial-Gesänge steigern, sich für wirklich nix zu blöd sein, zwischendrin auch mal was  trinken, durchweg “Alles war schön und nichts tat weh” schätzen wie nie davor oder danach, Paula Hartmann anschreien, sich jung und alt fühlen, unbeteiligten Freunden “So Perfekt” ins Handy übersteuern, Versöhnung finden, also auch Pop-Transzendenz.

Messer, 10.06.2022, Gleis 22

Zwischenzeitlich hatte sich die Spur dieses Konzerts in endlosen Verlegungen und Absagen verloren, dann war da aber der Termin: Sommer 2022, da konnte nichts schiefgehen. Vorne erst Performance (aka Dominik Otremba) mit wirrem Synth-Pop, dann herrlich abgeklärte Messer, die sich für ein Leben als Legacy-Act fitmachen - und genau daraus vielleicht nochmal eine neue Ästhetik schmieden können. Danach in Kreisen stehen, sehen, wie diese Band im Publikum dieser Stadt aufgeht, irgendwann aber aufs Fahrrad steigen, die Nacht den Anderen überlassen, und einfach einsam und zufrieden den Weißweinatem unter die Zuggleise keuchen.

My Chemical Romance, 18.06.2022, Kunstrasen Bonn

Es schien wenig daran zu passen, als wir uns Anfang 2020 Tickets für diesen Zusatztermin der Rückkehr einer Legende besorgten: In meiner Erinnerung ohnehin eine wechselhafte Liveband, sahen die kursierenden Aufnahmen der Los-Angeles-Reunion-Shows von My Chemical Romance stimmlich wie charismatisch dürr aus, was den Eindruck verstärkte, hier habe eine Band, die für eine kurze Zeit etwas wirklich perfekt ausformuliert und dann erkannt hatte, in eine Sackgasse geraten zu sein, sich aus wenig romantischen Gründen (Geld, Ruhm, Automatismus) nochmal zusammengetan. Und dann auch noch Open Air, im Sommer, nicht im Dunkel, wo wir alle uns doch so wohl fühlen. Doch es half nichts, die Tickets waren gekauft, weil die Liebe zur Band zu stark geworden war in der Dekade, in der es sie nicht gab. Die seltsam pompöse Hymne “Foundations Of Decay”, bei der bis heute unklar ist, welchen Status sie hat, aber so klingt, als sei es in ihr zu dunkel um irgendwas zu erkennen, trug nicht zu Klärung bei, wohl aber die Art, wie My Chemical Romance dieses Konzert bestritten, bei dem ich mich dann doch ein bisschen wie ein Beobachter fühlte, der bereitwillig im vom Bahnhof aus dichter werdenden Emo-Pulk aufging. Creeper waren nett für die Show, doch dann geschah My Chemical Romance, ohne größere Effekte, aber mit formidablem Gerard Way, mit B-Seiten, mit, ja, auch den Hits, aber auch enorm viel “Danger Days”, also doch eigentlich jenem Album, über das sie gestolpert waren? Auf sonderbare Art wirkte die Band inspiriert, vom Sonnenlicht herausgefordert, plötzlich in ganz neue Widersprüche eingefangen. Ich fühlte mich derweil wie ein Schüler, der wissbegierig lernt, wie wenig er weiß, während die ersten Reihen spätesten bei “Cancer” in den höchsten Weihen des Weinens schwelgten. Die Kamera filmte es für uns ab und zog es auf Überlebensgröße - das einzige Format, das dieser Band wohl angemessen ist.

Health, 20.06.2022, Junkyard

Meine erste Health-Headlinershow ging mit meinem ersten Besuch im Junkyard zusammen, und beides fügte sich wundersam - das war schon klar, als Youth Code uns das digitale Unbehagen in die Seelen prügelten. Health schütteten anschließend eine Stunde lang gemischte Gefühle in die Leute, kaum Pausen, Sicht sowieso nicht, aber auch gar nicht so viel Noise, sondern vor allem Druck an diesem Ort hinter der Stadt, in den Synth-Pop-Momenten, in den Industrial-Brechern, und selbst im Krach. Ich verließ das Konzert mit einem Shirt, dessen Aufschrift das potenziell Peinliche dieser Musik in meinen Alltag verlängert.

Low Life, 04.07.2022, LWL Museum Foyer

Die vielleicht erste Band des Jahres, die mir etwas beweisen konnte. Mehr oder minder spontan hin wegen Tipps und angespielten Songs und Neugier auf diese Location, gab es erst ganz guten, aber typisch lokal-zufälligen NDW-Post-Punk im Vorprogramm, dann aber vipernartiges Zuschnappen in dieser nun ja nicht zwingend darauf ausgelegten Location. Danach rumstehen, schwadronieren, Leuten beim Rauchen zugucken, also jene Art von gutem Nichtloslassenkönnen, die solchen Konzerten in den besseren Fällen anhaftet.

Lady Gaga, 17.07.2022, Merkur Spiel Arena

Vorher auch hier wieder viel Aufregung - wen gibt es denn nun vorab? Wird Beyoncé wirklich da sein? Lange habe ich nicht so viel Zeit vor einem Konzert im Internet verbracht, was schon beim Kauf anfing, lange habe ich aber auch nicht so lange vor einem Konzert gestanden, verlängert durch mäßige Orga und die Idee, die Arena erstmal zwei Stunden lang mit House zu beschallen. Aber dann auch hier: Überwältigung, erst Hits, dann viel Neues, gebettet in eine Dramaturgie, die gut kicken, aber auch tatsächlich als Kommentar (vor allem auf: Ruhm) gelesen werden konnte, dazu auch hier wieder Tränen, Gaga dann irgendwann mitten in dieser euphorisierten Arena, am wurzelnd-wuchernden Klavier, drumherum Kreischen und angemessene Verehrung - und am Ende “Hold My Hand”, zwischen den Flammen. Wäre Tom Cruise über uns alle drübergeflogen, es hätte mich nicht verwundert. Draußen dann eine liebe Freundin treffen und sich nochmal gegenseitig versichern: Ja, es ist passiert, und ja, es war vollendet schön.

The Rolling Stones, 27.07.2022, Veltins Arena

Vorab Zucchero, Rock wie aus einer Parallelwelt mit vollkommen wirrem Pavarotti-Memorial-Einspieler zwischen Bierwerbung- und Name-der-Rose-Passionsspiel-E-Nomine-Light-Ästhetik. Dann Stones, die es ja auch eher zu erleben galt, denen frische Schlagzeuger und Chöre den Rücken freihalten, während sie stolzieren und locker anschlagen und rambeln, und so schön das war, so skandalös waren die Menschen! Eine Person - EINE - hat sich hinten, auf den billigen Plätzen, also dort, wo laut Ruhrpott-Romantik doch eigentlich die wahren Fans stehen müssten, sichtlich gefreut, da zu sein, alle anderen laberten ununterbrochen, standen im Weg, drehten sich für Insta-Storys im Kreis, und all das wäre nicht schlimm gewesen, hätte es nicht verhindert, irgendwie Teil dieses Spektakels zu werden. Alle mit denen ich gesprochen habe sind sich sicher: Dort habe ich mir Corona eingefangen. Vielleicht ein Zeichen.

Deafheaven, 02.10.2022, Junkyard

Einmal sah ich Deafheaven gallig-resigniert, einmal in großmeisterlicher Anmutung, und nun dies: George Clarke webt Spinnfäden in die Luft, starrt sich durch zarteste Shoegaze-Schwaden und singt so, dass man das erst mal sacken lassen muss, weil es ja sicher keine Parodie ist, aber so klingt. Dieses schwebende Nichts von Gesang auf “Infinite Granite” presst Clarke hier als manischen Singsang heraus, irgendwie auf der Suche nach der Intensität, die es bei den Blackgaze-Gassenhauern automatisch gibt. Aber diese Wellblech-Garagen-Atmosphäre des Junkyard lässt im Grunde gar keinen Raum, so weit von der Musik wegzutreten, gerade, nachdem uns Slowcrush schon in den Krach gezogen haben. Am Ende ist erstaunlich, dass Deafheaven schon wieder eine andere Band sind. Das ist eine Binse. Aber live wird sie wahr.

The Toten Crackhuren im Kofferraum, 19.11.2022, Vortex

Es war eines der seltenen Konzerte in meinem Leben, die in einen Abend eingebettet und nicht der Abend waren, gespielt von einer Band, die freilich wichtiger Bestandteil meiner Jugend war, dort auch Konzerte gab, an die ich mich aber nur noch vage erinnern kann. Dazwischen haben sich viele Transformationen ergeben, und nun stehen wir an diesem Abend wieder beisammen, ausgerechnet in Siegen, und es gibt nun nicht nur Witzeleien, sondern auch Aktivismus: ein Typ soll raus aus dem Club, Frauen nach vorne, ein Banner für den Iran nach oben, dazwischen gibt es perfekt tanzbare Musik, für die ich früher bei iTunes vermutlich sowas wie ‘Elektro-Trash’ in das Feld ‘Genre’ eingetragen und mich darüber sehr gefreut hätte. Menschen schieben gegeneinander, bis niemand mehr weiß, wo der Abend hinlaufen soll, und irgendwie ist es dann auch eine Erlösung, als die Aftershow-Party den Darkwave-Faden der einzig anderen Band dieses irgendwie-Mini-Festival-Abends, die wir gesehen haben, aufgreift und uns in die Nacht spült, zu einem Pizzaladen, der zumindest zur Hälfte gemacht scheint, um das Publikum des Vortex in der Nacht zu füttern, in Wirklichkeit aber um zwölf einfach schon zuhat. Wir schleppen uns also in die Wohnung einer Freundin um die Ecke, kratzen Essen aus den zu Beginn des Abends sorgsam befüllten Schalen, werfen mit Tüchern um uns und uns Songtipps zu, bis wir erschöpft letzte Gespräche führen und dann einfach zusammensacken. Ein guter Rahmen für eine im Alter nicht weniger kurios werdende Band. Schön, dass es euch gibt. Schön auch dass es dich gibt, Vortex. Gute Nacht, bis nächstes Jahr.

Bewegung durchgehen lassen

Bevor ich viel fotografiert und viel Zettel geschrieben habe, habe ich viel gemalt. Das fing 1988 an, in den Schlussjahren der Schulzeit. In Passau und Budweis habe ich noch ausgestellt, in der schönen St. Anna Kapelle, in der Bräugasse und in der Südböhmischen Galerie. In St. Petersburg habe ich (um Zeit in der Kanzlei in Moskau abzurunden) zwischendurch bei Ivan Olasjuk ein Praktikum im Atelier in der Pushkinskaja 10, in einer vergangenen Subkultur in St. Petersburg, gemacht. Dort habe ich mich ins Grundieren und den Rahmenbau vertieft. In Wuppertal hatte ich ein traumhaftes Atelier und lebte ab 97 das Luhmannmodell: In der Bezirksregierung, der Kanzlei und/ oder am Gericht von acht bis vier, dann ab ins Atelier. Ich liebe die Malerei, ich liebe das Objekt, das Tafelbild genannt wird, auch wenn es aus Leinwand ist.

Ich denke sowie in, durch und dank Bilder(n), warum also auch nicht welche malen? Das poietische Konzept lässt sich dabei am besten über den Begriff des Mitpfeifens beschreiben. Ich male so, wie ich im Auto bei Musik mitpfeife, man könnte das als mindere Mimesis (Balke/ Muhle) bezeichnen.

Ich mache das nicht mehr so oft, weil Bilder Platz wegnehmen und Staubfänger sind. Ich verkaufe kaum, verschenken ist nur limitiert nicht peinlich, wenn es um Malerei geht. Unsere Wohnung war mal vollgestopft wie bei Messies unter, auf, hinter, vor und neben dem Sofa. Das tut man sich nicht gerne und möglichst nicht lange an. Das Malen pausiert, es gibt genug anderes zu tun.

Eines der Bilder, die ich gemalt habe, heißt Super-Acht-Abend. Ich habe eine zeitlang versucht, Eindrücke aus Film- und Videotechniken, aus bewegten Bildern und Licht zu malen, ging so schlecht und recht. Daher der Titel. Auf dem Bild flimmert was, unter anderem durch den Einsatz verschiedener Farben, optischer Verzerrungen, aber auch durch den Einsatz verschiedener Oberflächen, die reflektieren das Licht dann unterschiedlich. Optische Verzerrungen(wie etwa Anamorphosen) lassen das Auge nicht einrasten. Geht man am Bild vorbei, merkt das Auge was von der bewegten Geometrie. Holbein nutzt das im Bild der Gesandten. Das reflektierte Licht auf Bildern ist Teil ihrer Ökologie und Meteorologie; das lässt die Bilder mit den Tageszeiten und dem Wetter gehen. Aber auch die Bewegung des Betrachters wird so noch Teil des Bildes, weil sich mit seiner Bewegung der Lichteinfall und die Reflektion des Lichts ändert. Es gibt Auf diese Weise viele Möglichkeiten, das Medium Malerei dem Medium Super- Acht oder dem Medium VHS ähnlich zu machen. Sowas interessiert mich, nicht nur in der Malerei, denn die ist auch nur ein Mittel zu Zwecken, selbst wenn wir die nicht kennen.

Dieses Bild (der Super-Acht-Abend) verflüssigt sich seit einigen Jahren in unregelmäßigen Abständen. Die Ölfarbe fängt manchmal an zu tropfen. Das ist ein Effekt, der unter anderem mit der Industrialisierung, auch die der Farbe zu tun hat. Ist natürlich toll, weil man dann Bilder hat, die sich heilig benehmen (den heilige Bilder tropfen ab und zu), und weil man merkt, dass Stillstand deutliche bis extreme Langsamkeit ist. Und jetzt lese ich, dass das auch bei Pierre Soulages passiert, super, denn das heißt, dass ich auch wie Pierre Soulages malen kann.
