Every year, Up to 1 billion gallons (3.7 billion liters) of bacteria, heavy metals, and nutrients are discharged into the ocean by cruise lines. Each day, there are 285K gallons or 1M liters of effluent released by cruise ships into the sea. On cruise ships, 75% of solid garbage is burned with its ashes often thrown into the sea. On the other hand, cruise ships account for 24% of all ships' solid trash production (Grucela, 2022).
In recognition of this, the goal is that by the year 2030, the cruise sector hopes to cut carbon emissions by 40%. Hence, the cruise industry’s efforts in reducing their negative environmental impacts include recycling eighty thousand (80K) tons of paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass yearly with 60% more recycling edge daily over average land people and communities (Grucela, 2022). As a matter of fact, ports all across the world are beginning to question their inclusion in itineraries of high-capacity cruise ships with direct regard to their respective social and environmental effects. The thousands of tourists that arrive each time a cruise ship docks—enough to house a small town—put tremendous pressure on the region's infrastructure, local cultures, communities, and ecosystems. Indeed, the imminent return to the sea of cruise lines, passengers, and crew as they bounce back to the new normal and redefine tourism makes it more important than ever to build sustainability into the core of industry operations.
