The train from Stockholm slowed as it pulled into Haninge, the hum of the tracks disappearing beneath them. Will leaned forward slightly in his seat, gaze fixed out the window. Not because the scenery was unfamiliar, he could navigate every curve of this town with his eyes closed but because this time, he wasn’t just coming home. He was bringing Y/n with him.

She sat beside him, curled into her coat, trying to hide a yawn. The jet lag still tugged at her features, but she smiled sleepily when she caught him watching.

“This is it?” she asked, tucking her hand into his.

Will nodded, heart thudding with a kind of nervousness he never really felt before. “Yeah,” he murmured. “Welcome to Haninge.”

The air outside was cool and light, a soft breeze carrying the scent of pine and distant water. Haninge didn’t rush, didn’t demand your attention like the big cities did. It breathed, stretched out in its own rhythm. And now, walking its quiet streets with Y/n, Will realized how much of his soul was still tucked into this place.

He led her through it slowly pointing out landmarks with an easy grin.

“See that grocery store? Used to sneak candy bars into my mom’s cart and hope she wouldn’t notice.”

“And that tiny soccer field? It flooded one year and froze over and that’s where I learned to skate.”

Y/n grinned at his stories, the quiet pride in his voice.

They stopped at the rink next, the one he always talked about. He pushed open the doors and showed her the wall where his name had once been taped in faded capital letters.

“My dad took that picture right there,” he said, pointing at a photograph above a trophy case. “I had no teeth and was missing half my gear, but I scored my first hat trick that day.”

Y/n laughed. “A star was born.”

Later, at his childhood home, his mother welcomed them with open arms and lots of food on the table. The house still smelled like cinnamon his mother baked and the walls held photos of Will’s childhood: grinning, gap-toothed hockey kid; awkward teenage limbs in oversized suits.

His mom took to Y/n immediately. They spoke in half-English, half-broken-Swedish, somehow finding a rhythm that didn’t need translation.

That night, after dinner and stories and soft music playing from an old speaker, Will brought Y/n upstairs to his room. The dent on the wall from an indoor slapshot. A faded poster of Mats Sundin. His old bookshelf, cluttered with trophies and textbooks and pucks.

“I spent most of high school in this room,” he said, running a hand through his hair. “Lots of late nights. Homework I didn’t finish. Tournaments I almost missed because I overslept…”

Y/n sat at the edge of his bed. “It’s weird picturing you as a teenager.”

He chuckled, then leaned against the doorframe. “You know… back then, I always wondered what it’d be like to bring a girl up here.” A beat passed. Then, quieter: “Didn’t think she’d be as pretty.”

Y/n looked up at him, eyes soft. “You’re kind of sappy in your hometown, huh?”

He crossed the room in a few steps and dropped beside her, shoulder brushing hers. “Don’t get used to it,” he teased, nudging her gently. “But yeah… maybe a little.”

A silence settled, the good kind, and Y/n leaned into him, head on his shoulder.

bucky - back to back tour champion. hasn’t medaled at the olympics yet, but after a roller coaster first five professional seasons, he’s held it together these past two seasons mostly due to a coaching switch. bowman seems to pick the problem kids. charming, strong, looks good in wristbands, has an undefinable relationship with a woman who could knock him unconscious with a tennis ball. he seems to linger around mahalia more and more as they fight less and less. they even stood with each other for the parade of nations. has a real shot this year.

hazel - beach volleyball, plays with sheila hartman. third olympics. got silver in her first, bronze in her second, and is chasing that elusive gold using momentum from the best professional season of her career. played on a national championship indoor team at stanford and everyone assumed she’d go pro in europe like her older brother did, but she joined the beach circuit instead. she’s found lots of success there, but there’s always been a “what if” hanging over her head. maybe this year she can prove that she’s right where she needs to be. is very friendly and welcoming to new players, but it’s no more mr. nice guy come game time

jack - two-time indoor volleyball olympian, first time beach volleyball olympian. it’s worse on his knees but easier on his shoulders. (there’s definitely something going on between him and hazel keene, right? or is it just me?)

dora - 100m and 400m hurdles. two timer. she’s fucking fast. always has her nails did, hair did, and face beat on track. always smiling. dating fellow columbia law student and olympian rosie rosenthal, a triathlete. hops the into the stands to hug him when she wins. has darren, delilah, and her grandparents’ names drawn on her shoes. wants to be a sports agent for black athletes when she retires.

vera - women’s eight rower, bow. top of the field in her sport, less than 5k followers on the instagram, incredible husband and beautiful, loud husky at home. she’s living the life. advocates for mental health in sports and coaches rowing when she’s not competing. rowed with ginny in college and hopes to defend her title from last olympics. has a smattering of tattoos and approx 12 piercings in each ear. married to u.s. men’s soccer player ben demarco (not playing this season due to injury but followed his wife to paris. making hab content on ig and tt)

ginny - women’s eight rower, seat 6. daughter of two olympic rowers. her two oldest brother, danny, and second youngest brother, peter (at the olympics) row quadruple sculls and quadruple sweep respectively. her youngest brother nathan is a ncaa champion eight, just like her. she and vera match their outfits each race, including hair and jewelry (up to 2 piercings, ginny ain’t doing all that).

lola - 50-200m freestyle. swims a crazy anchor leg for the women’s and mixed relays. the only person happier than her when she wins is fellow swimmer john brady.

bobbie - indoor volleyball, middle blocker. 2x ncaa player of the year and 4x first team all-american lighting europe tf up in her first professional season. but is it enough? her father, robert chambers, was on the last u.s. men’s team to win gold and she’s expected to outmatch his legacy by defending the u.s.’s title.

dolores - park skateboarder who takes on the course in wired headphones and not only does she not get tangled, she normally wins. soooooooooooooo bisexual.

Behind the Boards

As a young kid I was mainly involved with sports like baseball, basketball, soccer, and that’s until I was 9 years old, we got some new neighbors on our little private road, who happened to be 3 kids around my age that all played hockey. I knew what hockey was, but I was never interested in it until they moved there, we all started playing in the road after school until the sun went down and I fell in love with the game ever since. Fast forward to today, I’ve played in and been to countless rinks and I can confidently say that each rink is different and unique in its own way. I’m going to be comparing four rinks I’ve played in for years of my life, going over the facility and just the overall environment while you’re there, and will be ranking them on a scale of 1-5 pucks. In terms of level, they range from high school rinks to division one level rinks, giving a good overview of the privilege we have in our area.

The Essex Sports Center in Danvers MA, is a place I called home during middle school. Grades 6-8 I was on my middle school hockey team which played all their games at this rink late Sunday nights, along with a few tournaments from club teams. You first walk through the glass doors under an iconic ‘Dunkin’ sign where you will find a spacious lobby with a TSR, or total sports repair store, a Dunkin Donuts, entrance to their indoor soccer field, then a large TV showing the time of your game and what locker room you’re in. In the rink you’ll find clean and spacious locker rooms giving you a nice private space to get ready for puck drop.

Lawler Arena, home to the Merrimack Warriors, is a place I am very familiar with. Since I can remember, I’ve been coming to this rink to watch their division one team play and have games of my own, as this was one of our home high school rinks. Whether you are playing or watching, you come in through the main entrance where you find the lobby with their concession stands, will call and a hallway that goes down to their practice rink and their school bookstore. The locker rooms are on the other side of the rink which made it annoying at times to have to walk that far, but they are spacious and open up to each other, allowing for lots of space to get ready. The ice itself is pristine as it’s a division one school but the one thing that sticks out is the low ceilings, resulting in a lot of whistles and pauses during gametime.

The place I learned how to play, Brooks School. This is a private academy that was our second home in high school as I was here every day for practice, along with the first rink I ever played in. In terms of the facility, it’s the smaller size but don’t let that fool you of the quality of this place. The ice is top condition for rinks in the area and a nice touch they added was the orange warning track, letting players know when they are close to the boards to avoid injury. The doors go right into the rink with your locker rooms to the left with a small TV showing which one, along with a practice shooting area down the other end with a net, shooting pad and bucket of pucks for anyone to use.

Located in the heart of Lowell is the Tsongas Center, home to the division one UMass Lowell Riverhawks. A few games have been played here but most of my time in this building is spent watching college hockey. I’ve had the privilege of seeing the behind the scenes as my neighbor is the team doctor, allowing us to come into the locker room after games and at times get to see the players. The ice is just about as good as it gets in terms of quality and two Zambonis do the ice at a time, allowing for quick and easy cleaning. For players, there is another entrance in the back that takes you under the arena, where there is a long hallway of very nice clean locker rooms, along with all the other supply rooms a division one rink of this level has. Coming out of the tunnel at a rink this size is a feeling not a lot of people get to experience, but being someone that did, I’ll never forget it.
