What is "FOOL's MATE"?

FOOL's MATE will be a documentary about Kayano Mikoto from MILGRAM. The goal of FOOL's MATE is to discus all of the theories and dive into all of the aspects of his character.

MILGRAM (ミルグラム) is an ongoing interactive music project by DECO*27 and Takuya Yamanaka that was first established in April 2020. MILGRAM is a mysterious, magical prison that houses 10 prisoners who have all committed a murder and it’s the job the guard to determine if their crimes are forgivable. Mikoto, the 9th prisoner, has Dissociative Identity Disorder. This means that he has multiple personalities/identities called “Alters”. Because of this, he has the most complex and confusing story out of all the prisoners. No one knows who truly committed "his" murder.

Why am I doing this?

I'm currently getting my Bachelor's in Digital Media Production and in a few terms, I'll be having a documentary class. I thought I'd get a head start on pre-production. I'm also making this as something for my portfolio.

Notes

The research document is sorta like a jumping off point for multiple other things like the script and a shot list. Because I'm basing my script off of this, it's sorta wordy and there are some jokes (one's an inside joke).

So far in terms of filming, I'm planning on having a scene where I go to an actual psychic to get their opinion on Mikoto's tarot reading in MeMe. There will also be a continuous scene that's going to be sorta inspired by Mystery Files, so me presenting this shit to my friends like an insane person.

something i noticed recently is that as marian is going about her character arc, her progress is evident thru her hair. seeing as how she starts out the film “tightly wound”, it makes sense the first time we see her in the film not only is she working (in an office, no less) but she also has a very proper bun in—

even when she shows up to sugar n’ spice she hasn’t changed out of her work gear, not even a teensy bit. she still has her blazer + her little blouse on and her hair is still very much up. even as carla tells her girl take your blouse off she’s like Um. No O_O

the only time in the first two-ish acts of the movie we see her w her hair fully down is when she has jamie over to give her frozen vegetables to put on her black eye, when the day is clearly over for her. she’s in the private space of her apartment only with jamie so obvs her hair is down. (you could also point to this as jamie being the only person marian is truly comfortable with, which i’d also wholeheartedly agree with.)

however as the two of them begin their Trek down south, her hair is still in the same very proper bun it seems she’s used to. even the night after marian is awkwardly kicked out of the hotel for jamie and her hookup to have sex, she still has that same fuckass bun when they’re getting pizza and spot the soccer girls.

but Notably the morning after jamie & marian’s First Kiss that marian scrambles away into the night from and after jamie picks her up from the police station, marian’s hair is now different! she’s in a high pony! (also interesting how jamie’s mess of curls have also been thrown into an updo here— this fit is the only time in the movie that she’s truly wearing a different hairstyle. i assume bcuz margaret was tired of the curlers, but it’s still a fun detail comparatively.)

when they arrive at the hotel, her hair is somewhat different once again! her once-high ponytail has sunk into a medium-bordering-on-low pony. it’s interesting to note because her bun in the first act never seems to come undone or slip at all, but she has loosened up to the point wherein she’s fine with letting her hair slip.

then- Of Course— when they have fancy dinner and jamie is courting her like a gentleman, her hair is fully down! she’s also in a cute dress, which seems like a far cry from the marian we met at the beginning of the movie who was pulling up to dyke bars in silly, boxy blazers. (i could probably write a separate post on the wardrobing without thinking, honestly.)

after this, her hair is only kind-of up (as is jamie’s) when they get kidnapped. for the rest of the movie, it pretty much stays down. and naturally, in the final scene we get of them, her hair is down and done-up so pretty and she’s in another cute and less formal dress. WHOA!!! CHARACTER DEVLOPMENT!!!!!

also important to note that jamie clearly has a Thing for touching/playing with marian’s hair— her pulling marian closer by a hand in marian’s thick black locks + jamie twirling marian’s silly little ponytail around (she’s stimming guys she has ADHD).

plus, of course, the very sweet moment before they have sex wherein jamie is moving locks of marian’s hair out of the way as she’s undressing her so lovingly. i love the sex scene because it’s so soft and tender and acts as a breather for both us and the characters. you can tell marian is definitely at Peak relaxation here, just letting jamie undress her and go down on her, especially when she’s soooo blissed out from her orgasm that she falls asleep immediately after. they’re such sweethearts… sniff sniff.

marian’s whole hair progression was just something i noticed at one point and i was like WAIT! that’s GENIUS. also genius in the fact that geraldine has beautiful hair and is literally a pretty pretty princess, so seeing her be at Peak Princess only really at the end of the film feels like a reward. it’s such a change regardless, but one you can clearly see is coming from marian becoming more comfortable with herself and entering a relationship with jamie, who she’s always loved, a girl who has always loved marian as she is. gahd-damn it. i love this movie.

fair warning… this post will have very little structure… it’s just my train of thought as a rewatch the teaser for the billionth time lollll

(also content warning bc i vaguely discuss abusive relationships in this post bc it’s very relevant to the film i’m talking about)

-empty diet coke glasses???? they’re beautiful for indicating period right off the bat but is there water in them or are they literally just completely empty 😭😭

-the music sounding like a heartbeat is so interesting to me.

-douglass’s fidgeting vs gracie’s stillness in the first overhead shot of them in bed together is such a good way to show that everything she does is calculated while he just makes choices without necessarily thinking it through

-“you’re special” hits me so hard

-i have nothing insightful to say about this but dougie’s signature is gorgeous

-THE LIVING ROOM CLIPS okok so in all three of these, she’s working on something while he’s just kinda hanging out, which really establishes the dynamic in their relationship

-and then the next shot where she’s the one driving… same thing with establishing relationship dynamics. she’s the one in power. she’s the one who makes the decisions.

-my big thing… omg omg omg i’m obsessed with the way it builds it up like it’s a kinda raunchy but overall cute and sweet romcom (with just a few hints otherwise that you don’t catch the first time around) UNTIL you get like 2/3 of the way through and you’re hit with “you should be grateful…” (i’m not about to write out the whole speech but yeah). it really well represents what a toxic/abusive relationship like this really feels like, when you think it’s all great and you’re in love, but a few things start to crack and then it all shatters and you realize how bad it really is. playing it from this angle and showing the build of how people find themselves in these dangerous situations is so important

-the hesitation when he repeats “dougie style” like even from when they first start out he isn’t confident that this is what he wants but he does it anyway bc he thinks she knows best…

-i will say tho i still have a very mild fear that i have read way too deep into this and this movie isn’t going to take this topic as seriously as it should and i’m gonna end up being really disappointed… hoping not tho!!! bc wow it really could be the most incredible representation of abusive/toxic/controlling relationships if it’s done well so i really hope it is

(loving the character of eric preston deeply, understanding his personality and the way he views the people around him, knowing how he feels in certain situations, acknowledging his flaws, while also knowing that he is probably the nicest / most normal character in the book / movie. knowing his friendliness and the way he constantly tries to please the people around him. always giving the other characters rides or even just giving brian a little present on his birthday. seeing how trapped he felt with his relationship with neil and then how he was ignored and discarded like he was nothing after he moved away. seeing how freed he felt after befriending brian. noticing how distraught and genuinely angry for the boys when learning about their assault. loving his little quirks and his knack for telepathy. loving the character of eric preston deeply.)

Artist's Blog - Everly (2014)

A Dish Called Everly 

Hello, I’m Gordon Ramsey. Nice to meet you. Today’s meal is a dish called “Everly.” For the main course, we serve Salma Hayek. On the plate, there’s a generous portion of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Commando and a biscuit drenched in Rambo-style blood and gore. To the right, you’ll find a bowl of soup featuring a mix of The Baytown Outlaws and Gotham. Finally, we lightly season the meal with a dash of Japanese weirdness. I’m passing Everly to the next round of Master Chef but will pass on seconds. Alright, it’s just regular ol’ me again – let me explain this analogy in more detail. 

A friend I trust recommended Everly to me, and I did enjoy the movie. By saying no to seconds, I mean I won’t be watching it again. While Everly wasn’t entirely for me, I still trust my friend’s taste, and the movie was good. I’m not sure how the meal analogy sounds, but we’re going to unpack each part and analyze the whole dish too. Grab your aprons, reading glasses, or whatever, and let’s continue. 

Soup and Seasoning with Everly

Let's start by discussing the soup and the seasoning. One of the things I liked most about Baytown Outlaws was how the hit squads progressed. Similarly, Everly has a progression of assassins. It begins with the other “workers” in her building, escalating to a well-dressed bodyguard with an attack-trained Malinois dog. The most unique and long-lasting character is “The Sadist” and his “Masochist” companion. This character gave me vibes of both Gotham and Japanese weirdness. The Sadist reminded me of the dentist character in Gotham, a passionate and theatrical torturer. The Masochist, with his distinctive hair, walk, and voice, brought to mind characters from films like Robo Geisha, The Machine Girl, or Tokyo Gore Police. Japanese weirdness is challenging to describe—you must watch it to understand. 

Japanese Weirdness Explained

Now, let’s delve deeper into the concept of “Japanese weirdness,” which I have some unique insights on. I had the chance to study Japanese language and culture under Dr. E. Leslie Williams at Clemson University. You can learn more about him on my website. He held a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Pittsburgh, spoke five languages (including Japanese), and was a professor well-versed in Japanese culture. I once asked him why Japanese horror movies are so weird. He explained that Japan’s long-standing closed borders led to the development of a unique culture, reflected in their eccentric movies. Unlike the melting pot of America, Japan evolved without external influences for many years. Wrap your dome piece around that.

Commando and Rambo Influence in Everly

Next, let’s move on to the golden baked bread with a shiny layer of butter and that helping of Commando. If you’ve seen Arnold’s Commando from 1985, you know it’s an action-packed classic and a bloodbath. According to The Action Elite, Arnold’s character, Matrix, kills between 87 and 88 people. In contrast, Everly kills around 9 people, as found on Fandom.com, but it feels like much more. My point is that, as a solo character, she wipes out a small army of Yakuza, hence the Commando reference. The blood and gore in Everly reminded me immediately of Rambo. It’s exaggerated and mostly realistic but occasionally clearly CGI. The same applies to Everly, hence my gravy-on-the-biscuit comparison with Rambo.

Salma Hayek’s Role 

Now, onto the main course: Salma Hayek. I have two points to make, neither of which are what you might expect. From Dusk Till Dawn is my favorite of Salma’s films, and I’ve painted Santanico Pandemonium before, with plans for another rendering. I think Salma is a great actress and a cool cat, but I don’t see her as an action star. She didn’t seem to fit well in the bloodbath role of Everly. 

Rest assured, there’s no shortage of weapons, violence, or foul language in Everly. Salma’s character wields a machine gun I’d never seen before in this action-packed film—the Ultimax 100 Mark 3 with a drum magazine. If you’re into that kind of detail, you can read an in-depth article (with pictures) about all the firearms used here. Besides guns, there are katana swords, knives, tasers, rocket launchers, and grenades. One of my favorite scenes involves a grenade thrown into an elevator full of Yakuza soldiers. When they can’t escape, the grenade does its job, exploding and creating a vertical fan spray of blood from the elevator doors. I’ve never seen that done before. 

The second point is the big one. I hope someone out there reading this can answer my question: What’s up with the shoes, or am I losing my mind? It seems like in Desperado (you can read my blog on this film here), there’s a scene focusing on Salma’s character grabbing a pair of high heels. This happens again in Everly, and then again with some old Reeboks. Is this intentional? Is there a backstory? Am I losing my mind? I dig high heels on girls, and one of my wife’s perks is that she wears them. So, maybe it’s just me and I just notice things like this.

Everly’s Timing

Everly was made about 44 years too late for me. If you’ve read any of my blogs, you’ll know I usually prefer things from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, with a particular fondness for the 70s. There’s a nostalgic element in the time-travel offered in films for me, but another factor is the violence. While I enjoy violent films from the 70s, there’s a comedic playfulness to them—it’s hard to articulate. Modern films, on the other hand, feature such realistic acting, bloody scenes, and intense themes that they have a much more disturbing effect on me. As I age, this bothers me more on a spiritual level. Vintage films don’t do this to me. Everly did invoke some of these feelings in its themes, etc.

Is Everly a Christmas Movie?

You can read my blog on Die Hard here. Why am I bringing up Bruce Willis’s ultimate Christmas movie? Because if you think Die Hard is a Christmas movie, perhaps Everly is, too. One of the key arguments in the Die Hard Christmas movie debate centers around Christmas songs and themes in the film. Everly has both elements as well. Everly’s story is unique, Salma Hayek is cool, and the Japanese elements are intriguing. Overall, this film wasn’t my cup of tea, and I probably won’t watch Everly again, though I do recommend it. People Suck Man + Delays

I was planning on filming the interview and I emailed probably about 50 people. Not a single positive response. At least this got me to buy a small light kit.

I was also planning on listening to a Jekyll & Hyde audio book while on a plane and work on that section of the doc. My volume was at 100% and it was too quiet. So that's been delayed.

Illustrations and Assets

So, Adobe fucked up Photoshop a few months ago and recently Illustrator. So I've had to downgrade to Photoshop 25.4 which was released in January so I can use it for more then 1 minute. Then Illustrator was just really fucking laggy. Other from that, I'm about half way done with vector graphics. I still have to go through a bunch of pictures and get rid of the backgrounds.

I also decided to try to make some 3D graphics so I've finally decided to learn Blender. Me and a friend are also probably going to work together to make a prop since he has a 3D printer. I also bought Paintstorm Studio which is more of a digital painting software then drawing, but I've found that it's really good for design. I just wish I bought it during 2020 when it was $10.

I've also been working on adding image credits to the research doc. There are a bunch of images that I don't know who made them. I have a list on the beginning of the doc if you want to help with that.

Since I'm expanding on the DID section, I would like to make a request.

Since I've seen some systems floating around here, can you fact check me? I really DO NOT want to get important information wrong. I don't think I've gotten much wrong if at all, but I just wanna be 100% sure.

Anyway, I like to think there have been some amusing misunderstandings on the Normandy around Archangel-related media.

Shep and Tali, having an enthusiastic discussion about "the film", which they both claim to have seen recently and enjoyed. Tali is treating Shep to an indepth nerdy analysis of backstory and character development, which seems to puzzle Shep. Shep keeps bringing up lines she found funny, which Tali doesn't remember hearing. Both are silently thinking girl, did we watch the same vid???

To Joker, loitering nearby making himself a coffee, it becomes increasingly clear that they are talking about two different vids, both of which he has watched (for Ripping The Piss Out Of Garrus purposes, obviously)

Tali thinks they're talking about Archangel (2189), the human-made Marvel-esque movie by a big-budget studio, starring big-name actors - the turian who played Bellicus in Fleet & Flotilla and the hot asari from that movie Vaenia - in a fast-paced action-packed story about hope and justice and forbidden love. The one she went to see with Traynor, with the ending that made her cry.

But Shep, bless her filthy little heart, thinks they're talking about Archangel (2189), the cheesy low-budget porn parody produced by an indie studio on Omega, full of terrible jokes about projectiles and rockets and finishing three guys with one round, starring some long-fringed narrow-waisted well-endowed turian who is, in fairness, having the time of his life with that role, and a 98%-fake human woman in a terrible red wig and highly battlefield-inappropriate N7 armour. The one she's been quoting back and forth with Garrus all week, trying to make each other crease up or cringe at inconvenient times.

Now he just has to decide whether to wait for them to figure it out, or confuse them both even more by joining their conversation and talking about Archangel (2189), the new comic series in which the titular vigilante joins forces with his archenemy to defend Omega's people from invading Cerberus forces.

webcomics im currently reading and enjoying: What Lurks Beneath, Lackadaisy, Oren's Forge, Golden Shrike, I Hope So, Tofauti Sawa shows: bojack horseman, atypical (except the 4th season that one was awful), midnight gospel, dungeon meshi, atla, dragon hunters, arcane... i did watch many shows but i remember these personally resonated. i need to watch more shows in general but they are quite a big time investment films: most of miyazaki's work, favs being princess mononoke and spiried away, WALL-E, coraline, ratatouille, I'm thinking of ending things, the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind... and more. i tend to prefer animation over live action as it's more expressive (obv not always the case) again i did watch more movies id consider good but not personally meaningful enough to mention books: i mostly read philosophical texts and fiction!! my fav authors are probably meša selimović and chomsky but i really need to expand my horizons with books, I'm least experimental with them, so its classics mostly unless i get a good recommendation music: mostly indie folk/rock but i do listen to most genres, fav artists rn are Lord Huron, Daughter, Wickerbird, Slowdive, Warpaint, Arcade Fire, Wilsen, Aphex Twin and more!! i rlly love ambient music too so a lot of the games i mentioned previously have gorgeous soundtracks will probably edit this periodically as i remember more things !!

alright so this is a bit hard to explain, bear with me. undedicated musings is an anonymous newsletter-based poetry... publication? run by me, under the pen name 'chartreuse', and the whole shtick is that i write poetry, love letters, and whatever else to the person i'll end up spending my life with, but the recipient of said writings is completely unknown, even to me, so im kinda just writing to nobody. until! i actually set my eyes on someone (obviously rsl) and then the writings start to get a bit more specific and yearn-y and personal. since the recipient is anonymous, all the writings are written for a 'vermillion'. both chartreuse and vermillion's identities are revealed when we get married in 1993. and no, rsl doesn't know that i'm chartreuse, nobody does until i reveal myself. i think its kinda cool :3

so for starters, i was part of the crew that worked on the set of dead poets society, now all my friends (except kimya, her and i become friends in the late 90s) make sense! my actual job on set is kind of a vague be-here-and-do-a-bit-of-everything type deal, so there's no set title beyond "assistant to lead" even tho it's essentially government assigned 'friendship' LMAO. but! me and the cast get on like a house on fire, so i kinda just get to tag along on their wacky teenage-ish boy adventures. this totally does not stem from a desire to be part of a teenage boy friend group, and i am, in fact, totally cisgender. i am also lying. anyway, without going into too much detail, me and my s/o-not-yet-s/o (will be referring to him as rsl from this point on) sorta have a painstakingly long will they wont they type deal, because i guess i like torturing myself. we meet a day before all the actual film stuff starts just as a sort of preliminary get to know eachother because you'll be in close proximity VERY often for months. thats some time in march - june-ish? of 1988 (i shift to my dr the day before!) and we don't actually get together until june of 1989. so.

also! some changes to the movie because i can make those: knox overstreet is now played by matthew lillard instead of josh charles, because josh charles is a fucking zionist and i dont want to associate with him in any reality! knox also isnt a b plot to the movie at all, instead focusing on meeks and pitts because i find them much more interesting! and also knox's b plot is creepy as hell! also, the racism against natives (read this!) is completely gone! no thanks!

strap in boys because this is the main event of this dr and the lore is VAST. MAURZI (must be spelled in all caps, like MF DOOM) is a sort of musical person/character i've made to tell the story of via a series of albums. i release my first single in october of 1988 titled "lunarian", which is a fun little song about a being from the moon arriving on earth and having some inter-planetary culture shock. and thats the only song i've actually planned! i release 6 total albums that map out the MAURZI storyline kinda

now here's where you get the very extensive MAURZI lore. MAURZI is a sort of alternate-universe representation of me, where in i'm much more famous than i actually am in my dr, and i am absolutely RUINED by my fame in a fuck ton of ways. each album is a different section of her life so i'll explain it album by album. also for reference, in my dr capitalism/ currency isnt a thing, but in the MAURZI... verse? it is. because i like anti capitalist art! same goes for most other media im in/ participate in, actually. MAURZI uses she/her pronouns btw, i dont.

MAURZI - my self-titled album is about as close and personal to my life as i'll get, which an average amount because i still throw in some songs about shit that i have not at all done/ experienced. (ex. songs about cheating, toxic relationships, and things along those lines. thankfully ive had a mostly healthy relationship with relationships! except that one time!) MAURZI is new to the music scene but she's here to make some lovely tunes to help process some stuff! artists im taking inspiration from include (but are not limited to): sarah kinsley, dodie, jeff buckley, tv girl, mitski, and peach pit.

GONE TO SHIT! - MAURZI's first album blew the fuck up! now she's thrown into the midst of dealing with an incomprehensible amount of attention on her at all times, which she was absolutely not prepared for. what does she do to cope? sex drugs and rock n roll, baby! she also gets addicted to 2 outta those 3 things! can you guess which ones?? now, obviously, this album is entirely fictional and is only tangentially inspired by some life events, heavy emphasis on the tangentially. artists im taking inspiration from include (but are not limited to): the nonstick pans, panic! at the disco, forest, david bowie, chappel roan, and king gizzard & the lizard wizard.

Charmed - the love song album! this is basically comprised of songs i sorta wrote about rsl, but changed up a fuck ton because i wrote them while i was pining and did Not want him to knkw who they were about. in terms of MAURZI stuff, she meets someone just after deciding that she's gotta clean up her act if she wants to exist healthily. recovering alongside a loved one and them being a motivator for recovery! now i should specify here that MAURZI's s/o is not the same as mine, and is entirely gender neutral/ doesn't even have a canon(?) human appearance at all. they're named Vermillion because we love a callback! artists im taking inspiration from include (but are not limited to): the smiths, siouxsie and the banshees, james blake, queen, laufey, and her's.

I found Him in Santa Barbara - yknow how when a banana ripens too much and it starts to tuen brown? yeah imagine that logic but applied to recovery, i guess. NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO REITERATE THAT MAURZI AND I ARE TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND MAURZI IS JUST A CHARACTER. essentially MAURZI had a spiritual awakening and "found god." but what that ACTUALLY means is that she started viewing vermillion as a sort of god? but she's keeping it on the down low (making an album about it) because she doesn't want vermillion to thing she's CRINGE. themes of loving a god, being IN love with a god, being in lust with a god, temporarily thinking youre a god? stuff along those lines. its a bit intense, VERY experimental and.. heavy? both in themes and in musical style for some portions. this is my fav album out of all of them if you couldnt tell. artists im taking inspiration from include (but are not limited to): sleep token, WILLOW, type o negative, slipknot, lemon demon (specifically songs off spirit phone), hozier, violent vira, pierce the veil, gorillaz kinda, bjork, kate bush, deftones, destroy boys, and rammstein probably.

Waterworks - so yknow how MAURZI was having a whole trouble with god moment? yeah well thats gone now, no i haven't figured out how that'll work narratively, thats for me to figure out in like 10 years from now (now being 1988, naturally.) we've returned to our self-titled roots in terms of musical style! now we've just got some fun themes of trauma and such! and then that's the and of MAURZI as a character story wise, as i said earlier the album after this one is just a Me album. same artist inspo as self titled!

and guess what! music lore isnt even fuckin done! my music in this dr is a multiverse in itself goddamn. so basically the album covers for each album tell a completely seperate story about a completely seperate alter ego/ character/ whatever named Moonzi. name given by my audience (which is my excuse for coming up with such a shitty name and then keeping it.) the story of moonzi, without going into too much detail because i dont wanna type it all out, is a sci-fi type story about a being from the moon (lunarian callback!) on a quest to bring this space artifact back to its original place, basically. a bit more on it later, emphasis on a bit. also! each album cover is drawn by a different artist, and each album artist animates one official music video off their respective album, just cuz i like art and stuff! those music videos kinda follow the moonzi storyline loosely, but incorporate MAURZI elements. is this confusing? hope not. drawings!

so! my version of the doctor is kinda weird. its one doctor, but played by two people, but theyre one person. we're both the doctor. and by we i mean both me and rsl, obviously. the viewer sees the doctor as two different people, but NOBODY ELSE IN THE DAMN SHOW besides our little companion buddy guy (played by my cr friend fish!) SEES, ACKNOWLEDGES, OR IS ABLE TO VIEW THE DOCTOR AS TWO PEOPLE. its really complicated and i really did not have to make it that way, but its cool to me so i really dont care. also we're breakjng the doctor who cycle of boring suit and tie (this is NOT about you 15 <3) and going steampunk-esque. again, cuz i wanna.

marley veitch be in a show without rsl challenge (failed.) i play a character i made up named Nanette Amesbury who is essentially wilson's first ex wife. does he have a canon first ex wife? think so (i actually havent finished house oops.) do i care? you can take a guess. nanette (nicknamed ninny - which im well aware means dumb) is the director of the pediatrics department at princeton plainsboro and she kinda has a fwb type deal with wilson before figuring out shes a lesbian, having a crush on cuddy, being besties with kutner, then leaving the show in season 6. (zeth if ur reading this yes i made her show up for more than 2 seconds she just. means so much to me. also i want cudbury content.) im also a writer for the show so im there for its entire run time :3 i really like this show :3
