Tensions mount between Afghan government, powerful warlord (AP) Tensions are mounting between Afghanistan’s government and a powerful local warlord, with deadly clashes erupting in a rural province between his fighters and government troops. The government has launched an assault in central Maidan Wardak province, vowing to punish the warlord, Abdul Ghani Alipoor, after the defense minister accused his fighters of shooting down a military helicopter last week, killing nine personnel. Alipoor holds widespread loyalty among ethnic Hazaras, a mainly Shiite community who are a minority in Afghanistan but make up most of the population in Maidan Wardak. China Makes It A Crime To Question Military Casualties On The Internet (NPR) When China acknowledged this year that four of its soldiers had died fighting Indian forces on the two countries’ disputed mountain border eight months prior, the irreverent blogger Little Spicy Pen Ball had questions. “If the four [Chinese] soldiers died trying to rescue their fellow soldiers, then there must have been those who were not successfully rescued,” he wrote on Feb. 19 to his 2.5 million followers on Weibo, a Chinese social media site. “This means the fatalities could not have just been four.” The day after, Qiu Ziming, the 38-year-old former newspaper journalist behind the blog, was detained and criminally charged. If convicted, he faces a sentence of up to three years. “Little Spicy Pen Ball maliciously slandered and degraded the heroes defending our country and the border,” according to the annual work report published by the country’s chief prosecutor office this month. Qiu’s is the first case to be tried under a sweeping new criminal law that took effect March 1. The new law penalizes “infringing on the reputation and honor of revolutionary heroes.” At least six other people have been detained or charged with defaming “martyrs.” The government uses the terms “revolutionary heroes” and “martyrs” for anyone it memorializes for their sacrifice for the Communist Party. The detentions typify the stricter controls over online speech under Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which have deterred nearly all open dissent in the country. Beijing hit back immediately with punitive measures against the EU that appeared broader, including European lawmakers, diplomats, institutes and families, and banning their businesses from trading with China. Western governments are seeking to hold Beijing accountable for mass detentions of Muslim Uighurs in northwestern China, where the United States says China is committing genocide. It’s also the safest way to move hazardous materials, but freight train derailments are more common than one might think: in 2019, there were 341 reported derailments on main line track, of which 24 were freight trains carrying 159 cars of hazardous materials. There had been too many close calls and Steve knew it was well past time to get out of Brooklyn.
Fury had managed to incite enough fear to scatter the Families, and in less than six months, he’d infiltrated their city and obliterated generations worth of hard work by using a combination of violence and propaganda. He’d essentially given them just enough rope to hang themselves with, and as a result, the Families had lost their authority and credibility, and would soon lose their livelihoods.
Blood had been spilled, and if they didn’t take the fight to Fury, he would continue to push in. If anyone resisted, bodies would continue to drop, and if it went on for much longer, people would either turncoat or tuck tail and run. It didn’t take much to convince Bruce and Natasha that they needed to go on the offensive, but The Boss, per usual, had not been so easily swayed.
Precious time was wasted because Bucky squabbled about everything and nothing. When Natasha pointed out that arguing and delaying would only serve to give Fury even more opportunity to do further damage, Bucky finally conceded, and agreed to get out of dodge for a while.
Once the decision was made, it was only a matter of retrieving their passports and booking a flight. They decided not to tell anyone where they were going, didn’t bother with luggage, replaced their cellphones with burners, and only used cash. It wasn’t until they were in the air and flying over the Atlantic that Steve felt like he could breathe again.
They arrived in Jamaica and got out of the airport without any problems. Since it was the only island in the West Indians Fury had yet to infiltrate, it was the best place to lay low, recuperate, and do some recon. Montego Bay, located on the north coast, was home to a major cruise ship port. As a popular tourist destination, there were plenty of resorts available to hide away in, and the crowds made it easier for them to blend in.
While Bruce, Natasha, and Bucky focused on plans for taking back their city, Steve spent his time healing, and it took weeks for him to start feeling normal again. White-sand beaches; long, unobstructed stretches of ocean views; jerk food; Mento music; the freedom to go where he pleased; not having to look over his shoulder all the time; the kindness of the hotel staff – it all aided in both his mental and physical recovery, and when he felt ready, he set about making contact with the team he used to run with.
It took a few days to get the word out, but with Bruce’s help, he managed to do it without drawing attention or raising suspicion. Steve chose a restaurant on Gloucester Avenue for the meet and the outdoor seating offered just enough privacy and ambient noise to ensure they wouldn’t be overheard. He selected a table that offered a full view of the street, and made sure to sit at the end so nobody could sneak up on him. The scent of pimento wood and authentic, local cuisine wafted through the air, and though he was the first to arrive, he wasn’t alone for long.
Maria Hill, Scott Lang, Carol Danvers, and James Rhodes were an A-list squad of thieves and baddies. They made it appear as if they were meeting up with Steve for dinner, calmly took their seats at the table, and perused the menu. They kept their features schooled, but their furtive glances suggested they were truly shocked to see him, and after the waitress served them their drinks and took their food orders, they immediately started talking.
“Nick said things went sideways in Brooklyn,” Scott voiced after taking a long pull on his beer.
“You pissed off the Families,” Maria stated bluntly over the rim of her wine glass. “Went rogue.”
Carol toyed with the umbrella in her drink, “Your actions got a man killed.”
Rhodey sat back swirled the whiskey in his tumbler, “And your Boss put you down for it.”
Their assertions, however misinformed, were not at all surprising. Fury was cunning and knew how to maneuver and coax people to his way of thinking. If he couldn’t connive, cajole, or get something credible to use as leverage, he resulted to wild accusations and downright lies. People in their line of work were hardwired to look for betrayal in all forms, and expect it to come from any direction, and because Nick was their leader, he was never second-guessed or questioned.
It was difficult for Steve to come to terms with the fact that someone he had worked side-by-side with for four years could so easily turn on him. He knew Nick wasn’t a good man, but then again, Steve himself wasn’t exactly a choirboy, and that probably explained why Fury had hooked and reeled him in so easily. Nick had saved his life. Gave him a job. Helped him and guided him when he was at his most vulnerable and least deserving. Perhaps he’d been naive, or maybe it was just a flaw in his character, but Steve had trusted him.
He believed they’d been friends.
“Steve, what the hell is going on?” Carol prodded. “Why would he tell us you were dead when you’re clearly very much alive?”
Pulled out of his internal self-loathing, Steve just sighed, and shook his head.
“Fury’s good at what he does,” he told them. “He sent me to Brooklyn and it went pear-shaped, but I swear to you, I didn’t sabotage anything. It was all him.”
The declaration made everyone fall silent, and during the moment of quiet retrospection, servers arrived at their table with heaping plates of food. The grub was so good, they didn’t start speaking again until after the dishes were cleared and another round of drinks were delivered.
Maria furrowed her brow and crossed her arms over her chest, “He wanted a foothold in the States. When the Senator fell through, you were his ticket in.”
“Which means he set you up and got you pushed out,” Rhodey said. “And since he doesn’t like to share, he’s decided to take it all.”
“And he hung me out to dry in the process,” Steve finished.
“So, what’s the next move?” Scott wondered.
Steve swallowed hard and ran a hand through his hair, “Fury drew first blood and the Families aren’t going to let it slide. They have the numbers, and no matter the cost, they will fight to the last.”
“Meaning what, exactly?” Carol asked.
“That despite your best efforts, war is coming,” Steve declared gravely. “And whether you like it or not, you’re going to have to pick a side.”
Rhodey held up his hands, “Look, what Fury did to you was bad, but he’s been good to me – to all of us. We did what we could for you, but none of us signed on for a fight.”
Steve sat forward and rested his forearms on the table, “Treaties don’t work unless all parties stick to the arrangement, and Fury has no intention of upholding his end of the bargain. It may not be your fight, but he will sure as hell make it your business.”
“For the sake of argument, let’s say we switched allegiances,” Scott countered. “How can you guarantee your Boss won’t do exactly what Fury did?”
“Yeah, what’s to stop him from taking all we got?” Rhodey inquired.
“Or putting bullets between our eyes?” Maria tacked on.
Their interrogation, ignorance, and constant referral to Bucky as his “Boss” lit his fuse. Unable to stop himself, Steve let out a sound of frustration, and slammed his fist down hard on the table.
“I should’ve better than to think any of you would step up,” he snapped sharply.
In the wake of his outburst, the restaurant fell quiet, and more than a few heads turned in their direction. Hands shaking and heart pounding, Steve apologized loud enough for all to hear, and once it was clear to everyone that a fight wasn’t going to break out, they returned to their meals.
Carol cleared her throat and rubbed her arms, “We trust you. We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t.”
Steve arched an eyebrow, “But?”
“We looked into James Barnes,” Scott confessed. “And we don’t do what he does.”
He snorted, reached into his pocket, and tossed some cash onto the table, “Yeah, you do. You just prefer not to get your hands dirty.”
“We do what we can do avoid conflict,” Rhodey reminded him. “Your Boss doesn’t. In fact, he seems to enjoy mayhem and violence.”
“And I came up with him, so, you think we’re the same,” Steve fumed. “Because deep down, I’m still just a two-bit, gutter-rat thug like the rest of ‘em. So, fuck me, right?”
“Steve, you’re not being fair,” Maria argued.
“No, you want to know what’s not fair?” he snarled lowly as he got to his feet. “It’s not fair that one of my oldest friends is dead. It’s not fair that I keep getting fucked over. It’s not fair that I keep getting stabbed in the fucking back. It’s not fair that I’m being left to shovel the shit that every, goddamn one of you has dumped on me.”
Scott stood up, “Steve, come on, man. Let’s just talk about this.”
Without another word or backward glance, Steve stepped away from the table, and onto the street. Even though he could hear Maria and Carol call after him, he ignored them, and pushed onward. His rage carried him all the way out of the downtown area and back to the hotel, and as soon as the room’s door shut behind him, Steve reached for the chair tucked under the desk, lifted it above his head, and slammed it down as hard as he could onto the floor.
The stream of expletives that flew out of his mouth was punctuated by the sound of snapping wood. The little chair didn’t stand much of a chance; it was pulverized in seconds, which prompted him to drop what remained, and send his fist sailing through the drywall. Steve was gearing up for another swing when the sliding door that connected to the private patio slid open.
“I take it your meeting didn’t go well?” Bucky taunted as he stepped inside.
Steve flipped him the bird, but said nothing.
“Well, as entertaining as your tantrum was to watch, you had better not continue,” he ordered. “If you do, someone will call security, and we don’t need that right now.”
“Thanks for the lecture,” he gritted out as he moved into the bathroom. “Now, fuck off.”
Steve waited until he heard the patio door shut before he stepped up to the sink. He cranked the water too hot, and the sting of it as it ran along his raw knuckles hurt like hell. When he glanced into the mirror, the reflection that stared back at him was all too familiar. The Dos and Don’ts of Beginning a Novel: An Illustrated Guide
I’ve had a lot of asks lately for how to begin a book (or how not to), so here’s a post on my general rules of thumb for story openers and first chapters!
Please note, these are incredibly broad generalizations; if you think an opener is right for you, and your beta readers like it, there’s a good chance it’s A-OK. When it comes to writing, one size does not fit all. (Also note that this is for serious writers who are interested in improving their craft and/or professional publication, so kindly refrain from the obligatory handful of comments saying “umm, screw this, write however you want!!”)
So without further ado, let’s jump into it!
Don’t:
1. Open with a dream.
“Just when Mary Sue was sure she’d disappear down the gullet of the monstrous, winged pig, she woke up bathed in sweat in her own bedroom.”
What? So that entire winged pig confrontation took place in a dream and amounts to nothing? I feel so cheated!
Okay, not too many people open their novels with monstrous swine, but you get the idea: false openings of any kind tend to make the reader feel as though you’ve wasted their time, and don’t usually jump into more meaty action of the story quickly enough. It makes your opening feel lethargic and can leave your audience yawning.
Speaking of...
2. Open with a character waking up.
This feels familiar to most of us, but unless your character is waking up to a zombie attack or an alien invasion, it’s generally a pretty easy recipe to get your story to drag.
No one picks a book to hear how your character brushes their teeth in the morning or what they’d like to have for dinner. As a general rule of thumb, we read to explore things we wouldn’t otherwise get to experience. And cussing out the alarm clock is not one of them.
Granted, there are exceptions if your writing is exceptionally engaging, but in most cases it just sets a slow pace that will bore you and your reader to death and probably cause you to lose interest in your book within the first ten pages.
3. Bombard with exposition.
Literary characters aren’t DeviantArt OCs. And the best way to convey a character is not, in my experience, to devote the first ten pages to describing their physical appearance, personality, and backstory. Develop your characters, and make sure their fully fleshed out -- my tips on how to do so here -- but you don’t need to dump all that on the reader before they have any reason to care about them. Let the reader get to know the character gradually, learn about them, and fall in love with them as they would a person: a little bit at a time.
This is iffy when world building is involved, but even then it works best when the delivery feels organic and in tune with the book’s overall tone. Think the opening of the Hobbit or Good Omens.
4. Take yourself too seriously.
Your opener (and your novel in general) doesn’t need to be intellectually pretentious, nor is intellectual pretense the hallmark of good literature. Good literature is, generally speaking, engaging, well-written, and enjoyable. That’s it.
So don’t concern yourself with creating a poetic masterpiece of an opening line/first chapter. Just make one that’s -- you guessed it -- engaging, well-written, and enjoyable.
5. Be unintentionally hilarious.
Utilizing humor in your opening line is awesome, but check yourself to make sure your readers aren’t laughing for all the wrong reasons (this is another reason why betas are important.)
These examples of the worst opening lines in published literature will show you what I mean -- and possibly serve as a pleasant confidence booster as well:
It was like so, but wasn’t.

Do:
1. You know that one really interesting scene you’re itching to write? Start with that.
Momentum is an important thing in storytelling. If you set a fast, infectious beat, you and your reader will be itching to dance along with it.
Similarly, slow, drowsy openers tend to lead to slow, drowsy stories that will put you both to sleep.
I see a lot of posts joking about “that awkward moment when you sit down to write but don’t know how to get to that one scene you actually wanted to write about.” Write that scene! If it’s at all possible, start off with it. If not, there are still ways you can build your story around the scenes you actually want to write.
Keep in mind: if you’re bored, your reader will almost certainly be bored as well. So write what you want to write. Write what makes you excited. Don’t hold off until later, when it “really gets good.” Odds are, the reader will not wait around that long, and you’re way more likely to become disillusioned with your story and quit. If a scene is dragging, cut it out. Burn bridges, find a way around. Live, dammit.
2. Engage the reader.
There are several ways to go about this. You can use wit and levity, you can present a question, and you can immerse the reader into the world you’ve created. Just remember to do so with subtlety, and don’t try too hard; believe me, it shows.
Here are some of my personal favorite examples of engaging opening lines:
"In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
-- Douglas Adams, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
"It was the day my grandmother exploded."
-- Iain Banks, Crow Road.
“A white Pomeranian named Fluffy flew out of the a fifth-floor window in Panna, which was a grand-new building with the painter’s scaffolding still around it. Fluffy screamed.”
-- Vikram Chandra, Sacred Games.
See what I’m saying? They pull you in and do not let go.
3. Introduce us to a main character (but do it right.)
“Shadow had done three years in prison. He was big enough and looked don't-fuck-with-me enough that his biggest problem was killing time. So he kept himself in shape, and taught himself coin tricks, and thought a lot about how much he loved his wife.”
-- Neil Gaiman, American Gods.
This is one of my favorite literary openings of all time, because right off the bat we know almost everything we need to know about Shadow’s character (i.e. that he’s rugged, pragmatic, and loving.)
Also note that it doesn’t tell us everything about Shadow: it presents questions that make us want to read more. How did Shadow get into prison? When will he get out? Will he reunite with his wife? There’s also more details about Shadow slowly sprinkled in throughout the book, about his past, personality, and physical appearance. This makes him feel more real and rounded as a character, and doesn’t pull the reader out of the story.
Obviously, I’m not saying you should rip off American Gods. You don’t even need to include a hooker eating a guy with her cooch if you don’t want to.
But this, and other successful openers, will give you just enough information about the main character to get the story started; rarely any good comes from infodumping, and allowing your reader to get to know your character gradually will make them feel more real.
4. Learn from the greats.

5. Keep moving.
The toughest part of being a writer is that it’s a rare and glorious occasion when you’re actually satisfied with something you write. And to add another layer of complication, what you like best probably won’t be what your readers will like best.
If you refuse to keep moving until you have the perfect first chapter, you will never write anything beyond your first chapter.
Set a plan, and stick to it: having a daily/weekly word or page goal can be extremely helpful, especially when you’re starting out. Plotting is a lifesaver (some of my favorite posts on how to do so here, here, and here.)
Keep writing, keep moving, and rewrite later. If you stay in one place for too long, you’ll never keep going.

Four Seasons returns to Bangkok again when it opens its newest hotel this month. Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River features traditional rooms and suites as well as private residences overlooking the city’s bustling waterway and skyline.

Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh will open in the first two months of the year in the Cambodian capital. The 247-room hotel will be the first Hyatt Regency property in the country as well as the city’s largest internationally branded hotel in the city.
The 175-room Hotel Resonance Taipei, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, will open in Taiwan this month marking the brand’s debut in the Asia-Pacific region.

Japan has been preparing for plentiful hotel openings in time for the Olympics, and while some may be slightly delayed, they are still opening. Mountainside KAI Kirishima, part of Hoshino Resorts, will open in January in Kagoshima prefecture of Kyushu. This hot spring ryokan in clear view of Mt. Sakurajima offers a contemporary take on the traditional Japanese inn.
The first Ritz-Carlton Reserve opens in Japan this month in Niseko. Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, has 43 rooms and seven suites at the base of Mount Niseko Annupuri overlooking Mount Yotei. Popular for outdoor mountain activities like skiing, it also features a traditional onsen and full-service spa.

In Indonesia, The Legian Sire, Lombok, opens this month as a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. It has 61 suites and villas overlooking the ocean and the Gili Islands.

Down under, Australia will welcome a new Marriott brand with the opening of JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa in Queensland this month. The 223-room hotel is a reflagging of the former Surfers Paradise Marriott. Following a $35 million overhaul, it will feature remodeled interior spaces and six food and beverage outlets.

By the end of January, the new Hotel Indigo Brisbane Fortitude Valley will be welcoming guests to its lively neighborhood including proximity to neighboring pubs and the Fortitude Music Hall hosting bands and comedy acts.

In Adelaide, Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets opens in January with 145 rooms, a rooftop lounge with raw bar, and copper decor throughout the property paying homage to South Australia’s copper mining history.

In the English countryside near Windsor Great Park and Savill Gardens, Fairmont Windsor Park will open its doors in February. It will have over 200 bedrooms as well as a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, salt room, hammam, and Japanese foot spa overlooking the courtyard and fire pit.
London will see a fourth property for the Locke brand when Kingsland Locke opens in January with 124 studio apartments, plentiful co-working space, and an onsite microbrewery and gin distillery among its many amenities.

Grand Universe Lucca, Autograph Collection, opened this month in a restored, 16th century palazzo in Tuscany. Its 55 rooms and suites put guests in the heart of town overlooking two important piazzas. The hotel will offer pasta and pastry making workshops as well as honey, wine and olive oil tastings and pairings.
Grand Hotel Victoria will open on the shores of Lake Como in February.
On the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy, the Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa will open in February. The 19th century neoclassical villa will feature 81 rooms and suites and be part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, which participates in World of Hyatt.
The Comwell Copenhagen Portside opens in January taking inspiration from the Danish capital’s historic harbor warehouses. Its 493 rooms, part of the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts group, represent the first hotel to open in the Nordhavn area.
In Madrid, one of the first Tapestry Collection by Hilton hotels in Europe will open by the end of February. Atocha Hotel Madrid is within walking distance of its namesake train station as well as the “Golden Triangle of Art,” known for some of Europe’s most famous art museums.

Latin America and the Caribbean
In Puerto Rico’s charming Old San Juan district, Palacio Provincial will open in January as a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts and participant in its I Prefer Hotel Rewards program. The building’s history dates back 200 years hosting diplomatic visitors to the island. On top of the 43-room hotel is a rooftop swimming pool overlooking the city.
Preferred Hotels & Resorts is gaining a new property in the Galeria Plaza San Jeronimo that opens this month in Mexico City. Its rooftop pool and garden plus 151 rooms and suites in a central capital city neighborhood are sure to prove popular with both business and leisure travelers.

Also in Mexico is the new Aloft Tulum that will open in February. It will be near the city center and a short drive from the Caribbean waterfront.
North of Cancun’s hotel zone, a new Planet Hollywood Beach Resort opens this month with 898 suites and 11 restaurants. The resort will have its signature Hollywood-themed memorabilia on display highlighting 40 “cult classic” movies. An adults-only section of the resort, known as “Adult Scene,” is a first for the brand; it will have its own beachfront, pool area, and specialty restaurants.
Cielo Lodge, along the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, will open in January featuring six suites with open-air accommodations amid the tree canopy of the Golfito Rainforest.
Canopy by Hilton São Paulo Jardins opens in February as the first Canopy by Hilton property in South America. The 98-room boutique hotel will treat guests to complimentary, local spirits and light fare each day in addition to regionally inspired check-in gifts.

The Caribbean has a spate of new hotel openings on the horizon. In the Turks and Caicos, Beach Enclave Grace Bay opens in December with ten standalone villas offering Grace Bay beachfront and ocean views. This is the first, new-build project along Grace Bay in a decade. Each features a private infinity-edge pool, full kitchen with villa staff, and ample outdoor spaces including dining areas and showers.

On the British Virgin Islands, Long Bay Resort will be Tortola’s newest hotel when it opens in December. Its location within an 18th century sugar mill adds to the ambiance of this “barefoot chic” property.
Lovango Resort and Beach Club on St. John, part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is available for reservations now as part of a phased opening. The first section to open will be its beach club, restaurant, three bedroom villa, shopping area, and 14 ocean view home sites with the hotel section following a few weeks later.

The Best Places to Travel on the East Coast of the USA
Over the last few years I have been making an effort to travel through more of the United States. My first time in the USA I visited Los Angeles and New York. At the time I thought I had experience North America but later realised this was a very narrow window into the States as a whole. Last year I spent a lot more time exploring the East Coast beyond New York (but oh how I do love that city). The east coast is the site of so much of our nation’s early history, yet it also is home to some of the busiest and modern cities the country has to offer. If you’ve not yet explored the east coast you’ve really missing out upon a great adventure.
Luckily, a road trip through the east coast is actually a lot easier and less time consuming than other destinations throughout the country. This is because a lot of the hottest tourist spots are in close proximity to one another. Thus, you can pretty easily pack in a bunch of cities into a two to three week road trip without feeling overly rushed and still having the time to absorb the experience of each unique destination.
These are just a few of some of the most popular and awe-inspiring cities you should plan upon stopping by along the east coast.

New York City, New York
There’s a reason why New York City is one of the most famous cities in the world. There’s something absolutely electric about the atmosphere and energy of this bustling city known for the endless opportunities it possesses. If you’re planning a visit, make sure you take the time to catch a Broadway Show. Take a stroll through Central Park or check out the Statue of Liberty, a historic US landmark. If you get hit with an unexpected rainy day and have to stay inside, consider visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where you can view one of the most impressive art collections in the world.
Tragedy is of course a major part of this city’s past due to the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. Take the time to pay tribute to the 2,977 victims killed in the attacks by stopping by the 9/11 Memorial. This is where the twin towers originally stood and now features a museum in which you will have the opportunity to learn about some of the heroes who died while assisting others on that dark day in our nation’s history.

Boston, Massachusetts
The city of Boston has played a major role in the history of the United States and is an essential stop for someone who wants to learn a little more about how our nation originated. If you only have a day, check out Copley Square or the beautiful Boston Public Garden. Fenway Park, the official home of the Boston Red Sox, is a must see destination for any baseball lover. The New England Aquarium is also a popular tourist attraction and offers fun for the whole family.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia is another one of the most historic stops in the United States in terms of the origination of this great nation. Here you can learn about the Founding Fathers and the steps they took to secure freedom for all. You’ll want to plan a visit to the Independence Hall, which houses the iconic Liberty Bell. This city definitely has a more modern side to it too, with a bustling nightlife complete with a variety of different kinds of restaurants and museums. You can’t leave the city before tasting a Philly cheesesteak.

Baltimore, Maryland
The city of Baltimore doesn’t always get the hype it really deserves in terms of east coast tourist spots. However, it is still a necessary stop if you want to get the full east coast experience. After all, it did play a significant role in United States history and is the birthplace of the “Star Spangled Banner”. This is a city filled with culture, delicious cuisine, and incredible art. Your trip won’t be complete without a visit to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, a strip filled with shops, restaurants, and museums. The Fort McHenry National Monument is sure to be appreciated by any history lover.

Newport, Rhode Island
Newport is one of the most idyllic cities on the East Coast. With a distinct New England feel, Newport is a great city to walk around or explore by bicycle. The Gilded Age mansions on Bellevue Avenue are a must see, with the above photo being of the mansion used to film the first Great Gatsby film.

Cape Elizabeth
Augusta, Maine
Maine is perhaps one of the most scenic states located along the east coast. Here you’ll see a rocky landscape dotted by lighthouses with old-timey feel. It may be one of the smallest states, but it has no shortage of attractions. If you’re stopping by the nation’s capital, Augusta, you’ll find that there are variety of family friendly tourist stops that everyone will be sure to enjoy. The Maine State Museum is a must see for anyone curious about learning more about the state’s cultural and natural history. Fort Western is also an impressive stop, as it is the oldest wood fort you’ll be able to find along the coast. It was built in 1754 during the French and Indian War and is now an awesome historic landmark.

Hudson, New York
Last but not least, a New Yorker’s favourite city escape is to board the train to Hudson for a weekend getaway. Hudson is the quintessential upstate New York getaway complete with artisans, quaint cafes and plenty of cute apartments to rent.

I've lived all my life in Indiana, within a 60-mile radius of my birthplace. I've traveled a lot, and I dream of someday moving to Austin, Texas, or some similar place where winter only happens once every few years, but I love my home state. I've always felt there was a lack of good fiction set in Indiana, especially since we have such interesting history.

We were on the front line of the French-and-Indian War, George Rogers Clark spent a lot of time here, and Abraham Lincoln spent his formative years in our state (even if Illinois claims him louder than we do). Of course, our state name means "land of the Indians," and we kicked out all the native tribes as soon as humanly possible--a fact which has bothered me since I was a kid. We also went Union during the Civil War, but there were plenty of Copperheads, as Southern sympathizers were called, and during the early 1900s we were a huge stronghold for the KKK. So our history isn't all glorious and happy, but it's definitely interesting. The physical terrain is interesting, too. The glaciers stopped here, so the northern part of Indiana is so flat you can see the windfarms for dozens of miles in all directions. Until 1910 or thereabouts, much of the northern part of the state was covered in wetlands, including the Grand Kankakee Marsh (known as the Everglades of the North) and the Limberlost Swamp, made famous by Gene Stratton-Porter. The southern part of the state, as well as the Wabash River Valley, is filled with rugged terrain and amazing geological features. So there's plenty about Indiana to attract the writer's imagination if you just look closely--and I confess, I resent being considered "flyover country" by other states. That's one of the reasons I chose to set "To Ride a Steel Horse" and other stories about Demy in north central Indiana.

Demeter Van Zant is the main character in a novel I wrote during NaNoWriMo 2013. I have a whole series of manuscripts set in Illinois and Indiana, intended for publication starting in 2018 (hopefully), and her story fits into that. When Rhonda announced that the last of her Magical Menageries series would be about horses, I knew I had to explore Demy's backstory--because she has a very special horse as her companion. Demy lives in a fictional town that is loosely based on Culver, Indiana, on the shores of Indiana's second-largest natural lake, Lake Maxinkuckee. Demy's lake is called Whiskey Lake, though. I can't say why, because spoilers, but here's a hint: the word "whiskey" comes from the Irish uisce bethu (translated "water of life"). Bear's Roadhouse, which has the best breaded tenderloin sandwich in north central Indiana, is actually a combination of two of my favorite restaurants--Creekside Lodge in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and Barbecue and Bourbon in Speedway, Indiana. They both make excellent breaded tenderloins (basically Indiana's state food), and Creekside Lodge is a favorite spot for motorcycle enthusiasts and clubs.

Purdue University
This doesn't really figure into the story, except for a brief mention of Demy's love for solving mathematical theorems, but Demy is a mathematics professor at my alma mater, Purdue University in West Lafayette. That's part of why I used a fictional town based on Culver--because Culver's just too far to commute three or four times a week to West Lafayette (it's about a 1.5-hour drive one way). There are plenty of states larger than Indiana, but we're about 36,417 square miles--about the size of Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island put together.
I hope I've convinced you that Indiana is a pretty interesting place! It's an ideal place to grow up as a horse-crazy girl, since we have so much farmland and lots of horse-appropriate terrain. We're even the home of famous harness horse Dan Patch, one of the reasons our NBA team is called the Pacers--and hey, our NFL team is even the Colts!
