A wonderful session on digital archiving and technicalities of making the analogue to digital conversion at the School of Cultural Texts by @themakerscollaborative as part of @indiaheritagewalks Professor Allan Dasgupta and others enriched us with a detailed discussion. Apart from the various cultural texts preservation process like the erstwhile supreme court documents, Tagore and Michael madhusudan Dutta works. We were enlightened to know about the North Indian Classical Music which digitally preserves rare collections from gramophones. The history and development of sound recording from cylinders to phonographs to gramophones were enriching to the core. Personally, the IRENE project drew my attention, which dealt with American universities taking pictographs of records and saving the whole data from the pictograph. The tales of Gauhar Jaan's neck position being manually moved by a English man during recording to denote the high pitch to low pitch sound is equally tantalising. The special 15min record system used for war correspondence recording is another matter of interest. Lastly, the live demonstration of analogue to digital archiving is an insightful. The day ended with listening to beautiful of which Bundu Khan's Bhairavi deserves specially mention. Evening sometimes shows the morning. P.S. A Struggle to save the magnificent edifice of yore, constructed way back in the year 1847 met with a tragic disaster today. As a Mutawalli and Caretaker of the Monument, most of whose portions are encroached and tangled in litigation / ownership issues, the major challenge that we faced was with respect to the repairs of the edifice, which was under the control of the ASI, being a centrally protected monument. A slow and steady workmanship led to the restoration of the Imambada whose rooftop is now under renovation. As for the majestic gate which was disowned by the ASI, and whose role was limited to the issuance of notices basis our protests, the collapse was imminent. The humble facade of this wada in Kasba Peth does not give an inkling of the rich history of 250 years that it holds within its walls. Built in 1770 by Sardar Majumdar, an important chieftain under the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire, this house became an icon of the socio-cultural scene of Pune, especially music. It houses a rich collection of musical instruments collected by Abasaheb Majumdar. The first public recital of an adolescent Pundit Bhimsen Joshi was held here many decades ago.
