In the 100th Test match between India and the West Indies, Ajinkya Rahane is looking for a bagful of runs

In order to extend his International career Ajinkya Rahane is going to pile on the runs and help the Indian cricket team sweep the series against the West Indies cricket team in the second and final test match, which is going to start on Thursday.
This will mark the 100th test match between India and the West Indies, and the captain of team India, Rohit Sharma, said that it is going to be a big occasion, and his team is expecting to dominate the West Indies in the same way they did in the series opener match in Dominica.
After the match at the Queen’s Park Oval, India will be playing their next test match only on the tour of South Africa later in the months of December and January. This will leave the likes of Rahane one more opportunity to make it difficult for the selectors to overlook him for the series against the Proteas.
In his first test match in 18 months, which was the finals of the World Test Championship 2023 against the Australia cricket team held last month, Ajinkya Rahane was the standout batsman for team India, but he is ruining the missed opportunity on a slow and turning pitch in Dominica where team India needed to bat once only.

Spite, pettiness, and cookie dough have been fueling me this week.
Thanks for all the support. It's been rough. It'll get harder before it gets better. I do want to clear up one misconception/disinformation about federal employees: this is not about returning to the office or teleworking. The majority of us do not care whether we work from home or we go to the office. This is about who's going to protect and serve the American people if we can't and whether Americans will be protected and served their benefits/services/goods if we're not here.
Anyway. Onwards and upwards together, as we've been saying all week.
First up...this poll certainly aged well.
Like I said: spite and pettiness. I enjoyed seeing Kate out and about twice this week. Not a fan of this dress - it's the pussybow for me.
Second up, I've decided that people who are perturbed by William's football enthusiasm are people who don't understand a) what it's like when your favorite team is playing well or that b) your own personal interests and hobbies don't stop just because you're married or you have kids or you have a job or you're someone else's caretaker.
If you're going to pick on William for going to football matches, then don't forget to pick on the other royals for indulging in their own hobbies like riding, watercolor painting, and going to the spa in India.
Whoops, I forgot. William's hobby is inappropriate and improper because it involves mingling with the unwashed commonfolk in public instead of something he does on his private estates hiding away from everyone.

You Got It Bad 🏸 | Robert ‘Bob’ Floyd Headcanon
Edit posted on 2 Sep 24: omg when I posted this a few days ago America had yet to win a medal in badminton (Olympic & Paralympic) and today Team USA’s mixed doubles in badminton won the silver medal!! Congrats to Jayci Simon & Miles Krajewski for their win and making history!! The first ever medal in badminton for USA!!
Being married to Bob & becoming Olympians for the sport of Badminton would look like:
You and Bob met in flight school following your respected commissions into the Navy in 2011, became friends and colleagues, which them bloomed into lovers about a year later. You were the pilot, and he was your back seater---so it is no surprise your relationship worked so well considering you two were partners in the sky. After about two years of dating, Bob popped the famous question and you guys were wed within the year--the Navy sending you guys to bases as a package deal.
As most military instillations, there's a community gym and recreation center where active, reserve, and their families go to participate in intermural sports and activities. Many go for the typical bowling league and softball team or try a hand at flag football and ultimate. For you and Bob, badminton called yall's name.
Originating in British India and popular among countries in Europe and Asia, badminton made its Olympic debut in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. Now while at first glance badminton may look easy in comparison to other court sports with a net like tennis and volleyball, but badminton requires just as much speed, agility, and precision. Especially when the shuttlecock is flying at record speed from one opponent to the other. The better the motor skills, the better you are.
Of course in the beginning you guys were a little rusty. Figuring out the rules and the best way for you and Bob to coordinate moves. You were the better server, but Bob was better handling the back while you stayed close to the net.
What started as a fun, leisure activity became more serious as you continued to play. Like we're talking you put up a net in your backyard. Whenever you hosted gatherings, you can expect that at some point in the night people migrated to the backyard to play a game or two. And boy would it get intense whenever you and Bob were on opposite sides of the court. "I hope you enjoy losing, pretty boy." "Darling, I know you're always right....but tonight you are wrong."
Not only did you build a sweat when a game got intense, but you looked forward to spending time with your husband outside of work. Not having to deal with the stress of flying or anxiety of running missions. Badminton was a great way to relive the tension and stay active. After every game you shared a sweet kiss with your husband, exchanging praises of 'Great job,' and 'We'll get 'em next time."
You both were competitive and roughly a year after playing you drew attention when you decided to join a local circuit outside of intermural on base. Winning match after match, you guys came in second in your first tournament. A great introduction to the start of your athletic career in mixed doubles badminton---which by the way, shoutout to RedBull and Dunkin Doughnuts for the caffeine supply when balancing a military and sports career.
Now the Olympic Games....the greatest sporting stage the world has ever scene...was never something you envisioned when you and Bob picked up your rackets for the first time. You'd only been playing badminton for a few years, having started in 2014. By the time the Rio Games came around, you guys were no way in Olympic level standings. Sure you'd been in a handful of local tournaments, making the podium in all, but you'd only recently won your regional title for mixed doubles, set to compete in nationals. You had yet to play an international tournament.
That time would come in 2017, and while you came home with third place at you guys were motivated to do better. You wanted to win a World title. Especially to prove to people who thought badminton was not a sport of high popularity like tennis or volleyball--and something you only play as a unit in high school P.E. You and Bob were motivated to bring more eyes to badminton in America. And what better way than to dominate a world tour.
So, when you guys weren't in the sky you were on the court. In the gym. Coaching each other, studying competition, working on technique, rewatching matches from previous Olympics. The Tokyo Games became a goal. And you were determined to make them. The pressure was on considering the United States has never won a medal in any event in badminton. "So, the Olympics...pretty darn big if you ask me." "Baby, you should know that when we put our mind to something, we make it happen."
It got to the point where your family members and friends were asking y'all about progress and even buying you equipment as birthday presents. And with the amount of shuttlecocks you go through monthly it was a blessing to a whole bucket of them in your garage. Your rackets had y'alls callsign's on them and of course you had matching outfits. And soon you guys had to invest in a nice cabinet to display your medals, plaques, and trophies from your competitions. Having the 2018 BWF World Championship right in the center.
You and Bob became a household name in the sport in the American circuit. Not only because you two were dominated the competition, but also the fact you guys were married and Naval officers brought a lot of attention. People who followed the sport became fans and viewed you guys as a love story out of romance books. Friends/coworkers-to-lovers who become teammates and an unstoppable duo in their sport. Yeah, it wrote itself.
When the 2019 detachment came though that became the priority. As much as it pained you to put training for the Sudirman Cup on hold, you had an obligation to the Navy. Nonetheless, you packed up your equipment and made the drive down from Lemoore to San Diego. Once settled, you both were spending any free time at the base rec center, practicing even for 30 minutes if you had it.
Soon the rest of the team picked up your love for the sport and became intrigued. Natasha especially, who became invested in watching you two play against each other. Shocked to see how heated it got and the fact you were able to move so fast to save a rally. "You guys are really into this, huh?" "Yeah. We just started for fun years ago and well..it took off."
After the whole shit between Jake and Bradley where Mav did damage control by taking y'all to the beach for dogfight football, you and Bob whipped out the equipment and soon all 12 of ya paired up to play games. It pretty much turned into a bracket situation where duos were eliminated until two remained for the final round.
And who's suprised....you and Bob won. And because you guys were so good, the team practically interrogated you two to which the reveal of your side career surfaced.
"You mean to tell me," Jake squinted against the sun, "You two are pretty much famous badminton players and are on the road to making the Olympics next year?" "Yep, that's about right. We want to be the first Americans to win a medal in the sport."
Fast forward to the success of the Uranium mission and unexpected world pandemic that followed, you and Bob are homebound due to the Navy restricting all work to remote settings, leaving you all the time in the world to perfect your craft. You won the Sudirman Cup, putting your names once more as contenders for the Tokyo Games and had one more year to train due to the postponement. In that time you and the rest of the Top Gun detachment transferred to Fightertown permanently, further bonding the friendships formed and the team became y'alls biggest supporters.
Qualifying for the Olympics had to have ranked in your top three moments in life. Right in the middle between marrying Bob and the Uranium mission. You jumped in his arms, screaming in joy while he spun you around and let the tears flow, bringing his lips for a passionate kiss not caring who watched. Never had you thought picking up a random badminton racket to pass time and relieve stress after a long work day would lead you to competing in the greatest sporting event alongside the love of your life. Experiencing it with Bob made it all the better. "We're going to the Olympics, baby!!'
Stepping onto the court in Tokyo officially titled you and Bob as Olympians, and while you competed for the gold across the pacific, back home your friends and family gathered to watch it unfold decked in red, white, and blue. The Hard Deck, your hometown, Bob's hometown, the rec center back in Lemoore where you first began playing badminton, the entire damn Navy was cheering you on.
Goal #1: Become Olympians - Achieved. Goal #2: Become the 1st Americans to win a medal in badminton - Achieved. Goal #3: Become the 1st Americans to win a gold medal in badminton - Achieved.
Yeah, you read that right. Not only did you and Bob accomplish everything you set your eyes on, but you cemented yourself in history as the first Americans to win a medal in any event in the sport of badminton and it was the gold. You guys became Olympic champions. And you can best believe the whole world was shocked to their core during the intense, heart pounding, sweat inducing, on the edge of your seat gold medal match against the #1 team in the world. You had already proven yourself to be the team to watch out for after knocking out the other leading pairs in the quarter and semi-finals, but to walk away with the gold after losing the first match, winning the second and tying the score each time until it ended with you scoring the golden point of 30.
Put it in the history books.
And three years later in a sold out crowd with your friend and family in the city of love, you and Bob continued your romantic journey of love, dedication and partnership when you defended your gold medal, adding a second to your cabinet with the promise of a third when the Games return to the Los Angeles 😉

Let's talk
A lot of this intrigues me because

I don't know how powerful Adidas is in Madrid's sponsor circles and I, for one certain thing, have never paid Madrid any attention but
How the hell do they get the CLUB PRESIDENT out to take a picture with George? And to add, I did a small peep on RMA's account (scrolled until the start of 24/25 season, I can't do more there's too much) and I notice that the only other times that the pres took a pic together with a guest athlete was with Carlos Alcaraz (seems to be BMW linked)

(from the looks of the thing on George's hands, it seems like a Madrid jersey)
So yeah I think this must be a serious link up helped by Adidas because 1) he came to a match, took a picture with the president, and it got posted on the official account 2) adidas football has yet to make a post but the outfit clearly shows its link to the event 3) jude, important adidas BA, follows george
So yeah! It seems like Adidas trust George to do these links up. After Adidas Padel, now Adidas Football. It's a really good move so far. Currently excited to see where this is going especially the publicity they push in the media is very very good as well (features with Elle India, GQ Italy, Hypebeast, etc)
Bonus point from me? The Madrid account post is part of the publicity in my opinion 🤭😉 Why? Look at their following count. 171M. 😵💫😵💫

December 30th 1915 saw the Cruiser Natal explode in Cromarty harbour, killing over 400 people.
HMS Natal on that fateful day was at anchor in the Cromarty Firth. Her Captain, Eric Percy Coventry Back, had allowed a number of the ship’s crew to take shore leave – many of them to watch, and play, in an inter-ship football match. For some of his officers however, Captain Back had invited them and their wives to a film show on board. He had also invited a family friend, John Henry Dods – a former Scottish International rugby player – his wife Annie and their children Dorothy, Marcus and John. Captain Back’s wife (their own children were ill) and three nurses from the nearby hospital ship HMS Drina.
At around 3.20 pm the Natal was rocked by an explosion, followed by a further three blasts in short succession. Flames shot throughout the ship but the true seriousness of the situation wasn’t fully appreciated, with injured seaman were being sent to sickbay to have their burns dressed. Orders to flood the magazines couldn’t be carried out and although hoses were rigged no water was obtainable through the fire main system. Within three minutes of the first explosion the ship started to list heavily to port and after another two minutes, she had completely settled down with the forward end of the starboard bilge keel clear of the water. 421 men, women and children lost their lives in this disaster.
The loss of the ship was soon announced to the press. Various photographs of the Natal, her crew and the ship’s cat (with the caption “Rudolph, it is feared, was on board at the time”) appeared on the front page of the Daily Sketch two days running. And although they attempted to notify next of kin as quickly as possible, the Admiralty was inundated with letters from family members of the crew.
Although not immediately ruled out, the idea of a submarine attack was soon dismissed. In order to carry out a torpedo attack, a U-boat would have needed to have passed two other ships: another cruiser and an even more tempting target – the battleship Emperor of India. Having talked to survivors personally, and from divers reports, Vice-Admiral Jellicoe was of the opinion that the foundering of the Natal was due to an internal explosion.
As was traditional in the loss of a Royal Navy ship, a Court Martial into the loss of the Natal was held at Chatham between 18th and 20th January 1916. As the highest surviving officer, Lieutenant Commander John Spencer Tyndall was the first to give evidence. He was in the Mail Office and in the immediate aftermath directed the crew to rig fire hoses. His testimony, along with that of others, in particular the divers William Russell and Charles Lambert, confirmed the opinion that the loss of Natal was due to an internal explosion caused by faulty ammunition. (The divers reported that the explosion had blown both sides of the ship bodily outwards)
Today, a buoy marks the spot where Natal sank – the remains of the wreck designated under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986. Many of those who died are remembered on the naval memorials at Chatham, Portsmouth and Plymouth. Of the bodies recovered only 17 were identified and were buried in the local cemeteries of Cromarty and Rosskeen.
More than 100 years later their memory lives on in the local community, with a garden created in her honour at Invergordon, and museums in Cromarty and Invergordon remembering the sinking, a memorial in Durban was erected in 1927

Foxtrot Alpha Alpha - Chapter 1

Pairing: Hangman x Female OC
Word Count: 1868
Warnings: Bad home life
Summary: Hangman learned his lesson a long time ago to never show his true feelings when someone's words or actions hurt him. To do so showed weakness that could be exploited, and Seresin men couldn't show weakness. Of course, there was an exception to every rule, and Jake's always came in the form of women, three in particular: his mom, Juliette Kazansky, and the girl whose name he could no longer bring himself to speak. She was the girl that got away; she was his biggest 'what if' and his biggest regret; she would forever be the ghost that haunted his dreams. Jake believed that's where she'd stay, for he would surely never see her again after what he did.
Or so he thought.
Notes: Thie is the sequel to India Lima Yankee; I'm using the same callsign for the Female OC as in Ghost Story because I just really like it, but they are different characters; chapters in italics are flashbacks.
Chapter Songs: Run Here
****
Hangman
From the outside looking in, the Seresin family had it all: a big house, a successful business that continued to grow, and the perfect family. Jake wished people saw the truth- the screaming matches behind closed doors, the tears that rolled down his mom's face afterward, the coldness of his dad, the impossible standards of perfection the Seresin patriarch expected of his kids.
No.
That he expected of Jake.
For some reason, one Jake had never been able to figure out, Michael Seresin always held his youngest son to the highest of standards, which Jake could never meet no matter how hard he tried. Getting an 'A' on a test wasn't enough. He needed that 'A-plus.' He didn't make varsity football his freshman year, which he had tried to explain that no freshman ever made varsity because of specific rules at the high school, but Michael Seresin wouldn't hear of it. Even when Jake became the first sophomore in his high school's history to join the varsity football team with a starting position as quarterback, it failed to satisfy his father. Natalie Seresin tried to atone for her husband's mistreatment, and Jake loved her for it, but he found himself avoiding his house as much as possible and hiding in his room whenever he did finally return, only coming down for meals.
His two older brothers- Nick and Matt- couldn't understand, nor did they try. They knew their father favored them and lorded it over Jake, rubbing it in viciously. They certainly took after their father. Jake ignored them, learning early on that if they failed to get a reaction out of him, they'd give up sooner on their taunting. It got better when they went off to college, but they always tried to start it up again when they returned home.
They were home now for the summer, working internships at the family business they would one day inherit. Michael Seresin expected Jake to follow in his footsteps as well, but Jake wanted nothing to do with it. He wanted out of that house, out of that town, and as much as he loved Texas, out of the state. Jake wanted to be as far away from his father as possible. He told his father he had no interest in joining the family business, which created a heated, nasty argument, ending with Michael calling Jake, and not for the first time, the greatest disappointment to ever pollute the Seresin family tree.
Jake left after that, going for a walk to clear his head and hide the tears that threatened to break free. Crying was a weakness, and 'true' Seresin men never showed weakness. He hated his life, and the second he could leave, he would. Where he'd go, he had no idea, but he'd figure it out.
As he walked through the woods, the shade of the trees providing some relief from the unrelenting heat and sun, the sound of a guitar caught Jake's attention. A melodic voice soon accompanied it, and unable to resist his rising curiosity, he followed the music. Carefully and silently approaching the location where it emanated from, Jake saw a familiar girl sitting on a blanket next to a small pond. She strummed on the guitar with skilled precision and sang the lyrics to what Jake now recognized as 'Run' by George Strait. He leaned against a tree, watching and listening, enjoying the show and impressed by her talent. The girl, wholly unaware of his presence, continued playing until the song ended. Then, deciding to announce himself rather than continue to stand there like a creep, Jake pushed himself off the tree and walked up to her, saying, "That was really good."
In the blink of an eye, she jumped up and swung her guitar at his head. Had Jake's reflexes kicked in a second later, he undoubtedly would be unconscious on the hard ground. He scrambled backward and out of strike range while she demanded, "What the hell?"
"Sorry! Sorry! I didn't mean to scare you!" Jake apologized, holding up his hands placatingly. "I heard you playing and came to check it out. You're the new girl at school. Annalise Blackwood, right?"
Recognition flickered in her eyes, and while she lowered her guitar, he still kept his distance. "Yeah. You're Jake Seresin."
"So you know me and still tried to knock me on my ass with a guitar?"
"The sun is directly behind you, so all I saw was a strange man approaching me," Annalise said indignantly. "What were you doing in the woods?"
"Wanted to go for a walk," Jake replied, twisting the truth. While he knew of Annalise, he didn't know her. He had no reason to trust her with the knowledge of his situation. "Why are you out here?"
"My sister has her new boyfriend over, I hate him, and I don't exactly have any friends here, so I came out here to practice my guitar."
"George Strait, right? 'Run'?"
"Yeah, it's my favorite song of his."
"You're really good," he praised sincerely. "How long have you known how to play guitar?"
Annalise sat on the blanket, gently resting the guitar next to her. "Since I was eight. My dad taught me, and I started teaching myself songs by ear."
"That's cool. I always wanted to learn how to play but never had the opportunity."
"How come?"
Jake shrugged, feigning nonchalance as he lied, "Sports and homework got in the way."
The truth was his dad wouldn't let him. Michael Seresin failed to see the value that learning a musical instrument provided. Jake couldn't come up with a plausible answer outside of the fact that he simply really wanted to learn, so his dad forbade him from learning.
"If you want to learn-" Annalise nodded at the guitar- "I can teach you."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, but you'd have to come sit down with me."
Jake raised an eyebrow at her. "Are you going to try and whack me again?"
"No plans at the moment."
Biting back a smile, he strolled over and sat next to her. Annalise placed the guitar in his lap. For the next couple of hours, she taught him the basics of how to play. Being the perfectionist he was, it frustrated Jake that he didn't pick it up immediately, but Annalise assured him he was picking it up quickly. Her calmness managed to lower his frustration, and Jake forced himself to focus on everything she said rather than on his failings.
When the four-hour mark hit, Annalise said, "I think that's enough for today."
Although he wanted to continue, Jake agreed, realizing she probably wanted to get home. "Thanks for teaching me today."
"You're welcome. If you want to learn more, just let me know. It's fun to teach someone how to play."
"Would you like me to walk you home?"
His question appeared to take Annalise aback, judging by the surprised eyebrow raise. "Only if you want to. It's not far. Just like five minutes."
"That's fine. I don't mind." Jake had been taught by his mother that a gentleman always made sure that a girl got back to her place safely. He might've only met Annalise a few hours ago, but she would be no exception. Plus, it extended his time away from his own home, an extra bonus. He waited for her to pack her things and picked up the guitar to carry home for her. When she told him he didn't need to, Jake insisted he help. "It's the least I can do."
"Well, thank you," Annalise replied, smiling gratefully at him. The pair began strolling through the woods back to her house. "May I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"What were you really doing in the woods? No offense-" Annalise hesitated slightly before deciding to continue- "but I have a hard time believing someone like you simply wanted to go for a walk."
Jake bristled. "Why's that?"
"I don't know. It's just… you're the varsity quarterback. You're Mr. Popular. Surely you had friends to hang out with or football to practice?"
"I didn't. My friends are either out of town or working, and football practice doesn't start for a couple of weeks, so I have time to kill."
"I see. Sorry, you just didn't strike me as the time to take a nature walk in his spare time. That's all."
"I don't like being cooped up in the house. I like to be outside." What went unsaid was the fact he didn't want to be around his family. Desperate to move away from the subject, he asked, "I saw you had a book with you. What were you reading?"
"Oh, that. It's-" Annalise pulled out the massive book from her bag and handed it to him- "'The Complete Book of Fighters: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Every Fighter Aircraft Built and Flown.' I want to become a naval aviator, so I'm learning everything I can about all things jets. Of course, some in here weren't used by the US or the Navy, but it's still so interesting! I've read it a couple of times already."
"Damn, you could get some reps with this thing!" Jake joked, reveling at the weight of the book. "Why the Navy? Why not the Air Force?"
"My mom works with the Navy a lot, and I always felt a calling toward it. The idea of being up in a fighter jet in the open sky is my dream."
Jake flipped through the book, fascinated by the drawings and pictures. "I'll have to check this out one day."
"You interested in jets?"
"I am now," he admitted, handing it back to her. They stopped at the gate to her backyard. "Well, thanks for the lesson today."
"Any time. If you want more, just let me know."
"I'd need your number for that." Jake pulled out his phone. A smile tugged on Annalise's lips as she rattled it off for him to enter.
"Nice meeting you, Jake," she said, taking her guitar from him. "I'll see you around."
"Yeah, see you around."
Jake waited to ensure the gate shut securely behind Annalise before turning around and heading to his own home. He smiled to himself, happy to have had a bright spot on the day that had started so miserably. Annalise probably expected him to forget her because she saw him as 'Mr. Popular,' and they ran in very different social circles, but Jake had no intentions of today's meeting being a one-off. Annalise may have only taught him how to play guitar, but he'd felt a connection with her, one he couldn't place. Jake would wait until at least tomorrow to text her. He had to keep appearances up by not acting too desperate to see her again. At least, that's what Jake told himself. Ultimately, he texted her that night, asking to meet soon.
To his surprise, Annalise responded almost immediately, saying: Same spot tomorrow? 10 am?
Jake grinned and shot off an answer: See you then.
He turned on his alarm and set his phone down on the nightstand, and, for the first time in years, he fell asleep with a smile on his face.

The lovely people I follow have already righteously raged about the opening scenes where Nathan is Assistant TO the Kitman, but I don't think I've seen anyone talk about the specific ending of his last scenes, where he is sat on a bench, rendered mute, when we saw him muttering strategy even when he was watching a match on TV while at work as a server.
Nathan doesn't suggest any strategy, and none of the coaching team consults with him.
But what Ted does is that he uses Nathan as a dumb puppet, to gesture towards a strategy that he has thought of. A winning strategy, in fact, further proof that he has internalised football like the rules of offside.
But its not just internalisation. Nathan jumps on Ted again, with heartfelt gratitude - "you used my play!"
The play, let us remember, that Nathan suggested to Ted without any additional pay for performing work outside the kitman tasks. The play that helped Ted keep his job by shielding him from his own ignorance and incompetence of coaching.
That isn't internalisation - that is appropriation. That is the British buying muslin from India, replicating the patterns on their looms, and destroying the Indian weaving industry so that they could sell their cotton cloth (made from cotton picked by enslaved people) back to Indians, and demand payment for it. And gratitude.
Nathan's last moments on the show, his last words, were to express gratitude to a white man for taking and using the thing that Nathan himself had given him, as a favour.
And that's the happy ending a brown man gets, in the Ted Lasso world.

hello hello! i'm still buzzing from the game <3 assorted (mainly sonny-related) thoughts off the top of my head:
me and everyone i knew understood even a goal against south korea would be considered to be a great result for singapore, given the gulf in quality, investment, structural support etc. practically no-one expected that there would be a 7-0 loss, however...
quite a few spurs shirts everywhere in the local crowd! whenever sonny scored some would take their shirts off and wave it to sonny. they went absolutely mad when he did his iconic celly <3
the lions could've been two goals up in the first 45 minutes if they took their chances. that was the closest they came to a sniff at goal, which wasn't helped when the defense folded and they were meek in regaining possession. there were some great clearances and individual moments of brilliance, but unfortunately they never were at the same level as south korea, who took their chances and were so clinical and daring.
the korean away support was elite! the chants, drums and the energy definitely made them the south korean team's twelfth man.
everyone (both south koreans and plenty of singaporeans) was so excited whenever sonny had the ball or took a corner. my mum and i almost yelled our lungs out when he got his brace! sonny was at his best, getting into so many dangerous positions; beating his man; making those crucial runs and practically storming up the pitch towards goal.
watching sonny play with such ease and skill made me miss angeball so much though. the energy, the pace, the vibes... can't wait for preseason & next season where we can see sonny knock more in for spurs <3
when sonny did his lap of honour around the entire pitch i was cheering so loud i think i was alienating the non-spurs crowd around me 😭 although this isn't a spurs match, i'm so grateful sonny's our captain. he gives his all towards any game he's in and he's nothing but heart. i just admire him so much <3
my mum and i got what we came for (sonny scoring and seeing a good match) but i couldn't help but reflect on our national team. they definitely put up a good fight, but the discrepancy in the strength of our players vs south korea's shows how long we have to go as a nation to be a force in football.
hope you don't mind me ending the ask on a little bit of a melancholic note (and reading through the word salad that's my ask) but those were some of my thoughts on the match! it was definitely an exciting one and i loved the atmosphere throughout. - 💙
hi there friend!!! ah i’m so glad you had a good time! i did not expect it to be a 7-0 either honestly 😭 but it’s nice to hear that there were lots of spurs shirts in the crowd, it’s so lovely seeing the support for sonny and spurs all over asia. it just speaks testament to sonny’s legacy that it doesn’t really matter where we’re from on the continent, we’re all just proud to see him doing so well and seeing that love being passed over onto spurs as well is wonderful!
no need to apologise for ending the ask on a melancholic note either, i’ve been thinking about the same these days. we as a continent have a long way to go when it comes to football and especially investment and grassroots development. i can speak for where i’m from in india and though football is well loved amongst my friends, sports like cricket will always take first place and the lack of investment shown in football by sporting organisations doesn’t help. i really hope that one day we’ll see more and more asian countries produce talent the likes of sonny and not just stop there but revitalise their local leagues and the structures in place to get people interested in local footy. we’ve got a long way to go but asian football is more exciting by the year! 🤍

A quick Independence day story
Or, the story of how a football club became a part of Indian Nationalism.
This is not necessarily an Independence Story, but it's interesting nonetheless. Lots of Indians have watched Lagaan - the 2001 hindi film directed by Aamir Khan, where Indian farmers of Champaner had to defeat the local British in a cricket match to be exempt from three years' taxes. And while it is not a true incident, it is based heavily on the story of Mohun Bagan A.C.
Mohun Bagan A.C. is one of the oldest football clubs in India. It was founded in 1889, and quickly gained popularity in Bengal and beyond as an all-India football club at a time when the sport was dominated by the colonists.
It was not easy to set up this club - it was self-organised and self-funded, naturally, not many star players were attracted to it. Yet, it won the Cooch Behar Cup in 1904, and in the next year defended it, while simultaneously winning the Trades Cup and Gladstone Cup. In 1906, Mohun Bagan was invited to the IFA Shield, which was, until then, an All-English Football Tournament.
Mohun Bagan did not have much success in the IFA Shield. English teams were better trained, had better equipment and were well-funded. A group of dirt-poor Indians with nothing but grit and motivations could not hope to beat them. For five years, Mohun Bagan was thrashed by the english teams in IFA Shield. Scathing criticism erupted - was this Indian rabble even worthy of participating in the Tournament? It became another way in which the English looked down upon Indians.
Desperate, Mohun Bagan approached the famed 'Slippery Man' - Shibdas Bhaduri - who agreed to help them. Shibdas Bhaduri was known to be a legend - even so, not even Indians had much hope for this football club by 1911. But Mohun Bagan A.C.'s story had just begun.
Mohun Bagan won the first IFA match against St. Xavier 3 to 0, stunning critics. In the next match, despite the opposing Rangers getting 3 penalties, Mohun won 2 to 1 - a win largely accredited to goalkeeper Hiralal Mukherjee. The tides among Indian supporters began to turn. Mohun Bagan was no longer the jokester club sustained on the Englishmen's pity.
Astonishingly enough, this so-called mockery of a football club found it's way to the quarterfinals, where they thrashed the much reckoned Rifle Brigade 1 to 0. Already, Mohun had defied expectations. In the semi-finals, Mohun Bagan had a close call with a 1-1 draw against the Middlesex Regiment. That, people believed, would be the end of Mohun Bagan's blistering journey. It was not.
In the replay a few days later, Mohun Bagan swept their english counterpart 3 to 0 and blazed into the finals. By now, Mohun Bagan was no longer just a football club - it was, in essence, the representation of the struggling Indian masses. For the finals, over 60,000 people showed up at Calcutta Maidan to see their home club face the East Yorkshire Regiment.
The Indians of Mohun Bagan had shabby clothes and no shoes. The Englishmen were spick and span in their bright boots and uniforms. It was the scene of Lagaan's farmers facing-off their Englishmen.
The first few minutes of the game saw an English goal, and the next few had Mohun Bagan levelling the game. It was a 1 to 1 situation. For the next fifty-something minutes, each team tried to desperately score - the English because they had a point to prove, and the Indians because this was no longer just about football.
Two minutes before the ending, it was Bhaduri - the man, the myth, and the legend - who scored a second goal. When the whistle blew - it was Mohun Bagan's victory at 2-1. The scene beggared belief - a rag-tag rabble of barefooted Indians defeating the highly acclaimed English players. The victory did what even the Swadeshi nationalists could not - it proved that the English were not invincible. It was not a football club's victory, it was a victory of Indian nationalism. Even today, July 29th is Mohun Bagan Day in India - in memory of the club, it's desperately determined players, and of course, Shibdas Bhaduri's excellence.
