Hello! Just to start I love the world falling series and your writing :)
I was wondering if you have any historical inspiration for the world falling series? Like, time periods, places etc?
Keep being amazing and have a great day :)
hi! I'm so glad you like the series!
As for historical inspiration, oh boy do i. I'm a history major, so there is a Lot of things. I'm gonna do this by kingdom to make it easier if i can lol.
Ok, first, the End: The End is kind of a weird one because it's a blend of its older culture plus what Enderian, who is originally from the Overworld, brought with her and implemented when she took over. One of the main things is the use of rivers to separate the three old kingdoms, and the fact that the Shulk castle/the one the first fic takes place in is on water. A lot of borders historically were designated by water because it was the most consistent way to remember them since they didn't have modern tech, same with having cities on water because of transport, ease of farming, etc. Even though the End is an ice land, the rivers would still provide faster travel then through large drifts of snow. In the last chapter of WF the duke gives rae an elytra, though he doesn't tell him much about it other than the fact that it took craftsmen from all three kingdoms to make them, which was meant to be symbolic of a steady trade relationship between the three. that was slightly inspired by indigenous communities who would make art of some sort of pattern to represent allyships between various communities, and was also a fun way to tie in the elytra to the story (it will become relevant again in this fic, eventually)
The Nether: The Nether is fairly simple, in that it's meant to be a really warm climate, with lots of autumn ish coloured trees, so not totally realistic, but I tried to describe a lot of their fashion to be both unique and have some influence from their neighbours. Largely, i looked at warm climated areas irl, like india, or south america, and took influence from that, with the silks and light fabrics in a wide variety of fabrics. this was definitely also inspired by how Athena portrayed the Nether in their lore, but i tried to expand it a bit. as for political, it's sort of inspired by like 1500's ish germany, where there were many princes but one high prince (holy roman empire actually, i think?) so before netherum and soul, the princes would have been in charge of smaller areas, but then netherum and soul united all the lands into the Nether, and as an act of good faith they were elected as the King and Queen (this is more fantasy than fact based), but, all the previous princes, are still princes, so they are largely in charge of their own lands still, but they refer to Soul now, netherum in the past, about certain things. it's sort of a state situation? i was mainly thinking HRE when i planned it.
The Overworld: Admittedly, the Overworld is pretty plain. It's basically Canada inspired, since that's where I'm from, so that's where my brain goes. It's the most north american of all the kingdoms, with 4 seasons, but the northern parts of the kingdom are snowy most parts of the year, though not quite to the extent of the End. It also used to be about 4 different kingdoms, with Morningstar kingdom being the largest, so when magic hit and everything started going weird, the four kingdoms kinda came together under Morningstar, which then got renamed when Enderian took Rae and erased the name Morningstar from most memories. also, the capital of morningstar is crete. greek myth is not canon to the wf series, but ill be damned if i can't make references to it lol
The Aether: I have not talked about the Aether a lot! BUT cliamte wise I imagine it like England, where it's kind of mild most of the time, if it snows its fairly minimal, and it rains a fair amount. we're ignoring the scorching summers tho. I did also take inspiration from like Ancient Greece and Rome, just due to the Aether sort of having the rep in canon/in the fic of having the library or being scholarly. I also imagine a lot of their aspects of culture, like the wine, the art, etc. maybe not the nudity
The East Isles!: This was purely me wanting Ocie to be a queen. Again I kind of took inspo from like irish/scottish history, with britain especially. except in this case britain is the overworld, and not the aether, even though i just compared the aether to britain lol. other than that it doesn't really have any historical inspo
And thats it! the End and Nether are definitely the most historically inspired, but every once in a while i learn something new in one of my classes and i just kinda shove it in because its neat. there may very well be more, but this is what i can remember right now
thanks for the ask!

i love being southeast asian.
despite whatever unhappy history, despite the rise of ethnonationalism and racism in our countries; despite the fact that most of us remain in the global south under the invisible thumb of western empires and conglomerates, exploited by rich expats and beg-packers; despite the conservatism, the bigotry, the pain and prejudice and the corruption.
despite all that, i love where i am from. this is my home.
my hands tenderly trace the lines of our history and find within it a colourful collection of influences that continue to shape us until today:
the native malays, javanese, sundanese, minangkabau, bugis, visayan, tagalog, and other dominant peoples.
alongside indigenous tribes like the iban, kadazan, sama-bajau, temuan, penan, jakun, and hundreds upon hundreds more ethnic groups.
all of us holding onto our ancestors' mysticism and spirituality and animism, the watchful gaze of legacy fixed on us as we move through an ever-changing and modernising world (and what is modernity anyway? isn't civilisation overrated?).
and then the chinese peoples. the hainanese, hokkien and cantonese and more, many of whom came here due to trade in the pre-colonial era, but then most arrived as the imported labour for the colonial powers.
but this is their home too. we live here together, and through them we all celebrate lunar new year and the mid-autumn festival. all of us give red envelopes during our many festivals. we give oranges that symbolise prosperity and ring in the year of the rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat. we hold lion dance performances in our malls and marks. we eat and exchange mooncakes.
and then the indian peoples, though mostly tamil indians from south india, but also sikhs, malayalis, and punjabis, who arrived and assimilated and spread their culture and beliefs much earlier before the pre-colonial era, causing the indianisation of southeast asia. then more indian peoples came during the colonial era, again, as imported labour, working our fields or donning the uniform of our common oppressors, kept walled away from us despite how alike we look and sound.
because truly we do sound the same. sanskrit remains an abundant source for a large chunk of our languages. i hear the vedic mantras and can pick apart words that sound familiar. hinduism and buddhism still leaves its traces in our cultures even for those of us who've shifted to islam.
and yes, islam. we're not what the west thinks of when they talk about the muslim world, but southeast asia has some of the largest muslim populations in the world. because through trade, since the medieval times, islam came here and with it brought so many arabic influences that has come to shape our languages and customs, with plenty of our cultures having since been morphed around islamic beliefs and ideas. in malaysia and indonesia and brunei (and perhaps even certain parts of the philippines) you'll find a mosque or a prayer room everywhere you go. and every ramadan millions of us fast, every eid all of us dress up and visit each other's houses for feasts and festivities.
then of course came european colonisation at the hands of the portugese, dutch, british (in malaysia and indonesia's case we got all three), spanish, and french their reigns lasting over 400 years. and from them we came european culture and more new languages, english quickly becoming a second language (or even a first language) for so many of us, missionaries building churches and spreading the word of jesus christ as the son of god; with their fair features they draw a line between us and them, between the civilised and the barbarians, between the light-haired light-eyed and the unruly dark-haired dark-eyed.
and then comes world war 2 and the japanese invasion, and for most it was so brutal and violent, and for the rest it was miserable, with famine and inflation but we were forced to sing songs in japanese anyway, to watch their planes fly in the sky towards their enemies, to swallow their ideas in our parched throats.
and then the war ended and wounds began to heal, and then came the 1980s until now with all its shiny technology: nintendo, panasonic, television and anime, and now we have leagues of people learning japanese language and culture anyway, except now it is done wholeheartedly, and as it turns out japanese isn't even that different from our own cultures anyway. houses on stilts made of wood with thatch roofs, making our living from the sea and coast, eating rice for every meal, our phonetics and theirs so alike.
and today we have waves of their expats migrating here because of course they do, we're the Global South™ and for them it's cheap and affordable, so we have little japans sprouting here and there and sometimes i go to a random street and find signs written in japanese and read bits of broken hiragana.
and it's beautiful, being able to move through this world and find the handprints we've all left upon it. it's a wonderful amalgam of so many traditions and colours and beliefs and language all mixing around in this huge bubbling melting pot.
and i'm not chinese or indian or arab or british but when i see them on tv, i'm also seeing a part of me, i hear the words in their tongue and i recognise them as mine, i eat their food and know them as intimately as my own.
but of course our politicians, our kings and our prime ministers (and the divide-and-conquer rule of colonisers now gone) continue to divide us and make us hate each other, fanning flames of distrust and fear of that-which-is-different.
it's such a shame too, because it's so special. it's what makes us us, our dozens of creoles, the way we can speak a sentence comprising vernacular from at least four languages and we all understand each other anyway.
we have a word in malay, "rojak", which is also the name of a dish that mixes a bunch of different ingredients, and is found in malaysian, indonesian and singaporean cuisine. but where i'm from, we also say "rojak" to mean anything that's an eclectic mixture of things, things that seemingly don't go together and aren't necessarily pleasing to the eye but still, somehow, it works, in fact it tastes good, spicy and flavourful and hearty.
and that's us: southeast asia, all of it, a beautiful rojak culture. and it's ours.

First Line Tag Game
Thank you @sillyunicorn for tagging me!
RULES: post the first lines of your last 10 fics/chapters posted on AO3 (if you have less than 10 fics posted, post the first lines of all your fics) and try to draw some conclusions.
One day in the autumn Felice walks back into her room and chokes on the literal air.
Waterfall rush / of a noise machine. / Not the same as Middle C, / that slim ivory bar / where (Simon hears) / lessons are supposed to begin.
To our patrons: Our apologies.
“Grantaire, my friend,” says Courfeyrac one day, when they’re lounging on the steps at the Sorbonne, waiting for Bossuet to appear after he’s ducked out of a lecture. “I require your assistance.”
Before the sentence is read, / August remembers his first year: / literature lectures, / scribbled Ancient Greek on a page.
Greve August Horn, a young leader in the Frihet Society, died suddenly in his home yesterday afternoon.
I heard that you are building a narrative based on the family papers Frida is translating, and that you have reached the tumultuous events of August 1809.
Lotta was not accustomed to acts of rebellion.
Finding himself in India is a joke Rai makes to his friends; finding himself in New York, a joke he makes to himself.
After Christmas, / Mamma needs the New Year to arrive / so fast / that she’ll welcome it twice / if she has to.
I got a little creative with the works in verse, since this game seemed to be a little bit more geared toward works in prose.
One thing I see a lot is myself orienting the reader in time and/or space. I also see a fair number of names, though the name is not always the viewpoint character. Not all of the sentences are super snappy, which I kind of like. I think I prefer that sentences are orienting and that the next sentences build nicely on them, rather than having a super obvious hook of a beginning.
Weirdly enough, one of my favorite opening sentences is #3. Even if it’s a sort of “diegetic” sentence (it’s a sign on a restaurant saying it will be closed for a private event) the overall theme of the fic is about regret and atonement, so the focus on apologies is sneakily smart. Well done, Blue, you did a good job there!
Any other patterns people notice?
I’m doing an open tag. Feel free to play if no one’s tagged you yet!

National Farmers Day
Without farmers, we’d all starve. Visit a farmer’s market, take a trip to a farm, or reenact how farmers used to live and grow with old-fashioned tools.
Some might say that modern society was built upon the rugged shoulders and stubborn personalities of farmers from around the world. Because without those who dedicate their lives to growing food, where would everyone else be?
So, it only makes sense that a time should be set aside to celebrate their contributions and all that they have provided (and indeed continue to provide) to the world. National Farmers Day intends to do just this!
History of National Farmers Day
Due to the fact that farmers have been honored for centuries, the roots of this day are likely to go back very far and with a wide variety of traditions! Many different countries have set aside dates for celebrating National Farmers Day at different times of the year. For instance, in India and Pakistan a day for farmers is celebrated in December, while South Korea celebrates in November and Zambia in October.
In the United States, some people have celebrated a time in late October as “Old Farmer’s Day”, with a festival located in Loranger, Louisiana that reenacts the farmers’ way of life from before technology changed it so much. Other communities may host their own events and activities that offer a nod to the important work that farmers do to put food on the table of families everywhere.
National Farmers Day offers a delightful time in the harvest season of the autumn to show some appreciation and love for those folks who toil and work to provide food for those in the communities around them. Whether celebrating small micro farmers who grow or local organic dairy farmers, this is an ideal opportunity to make a big deal out of something so important as farmers!
How to Celebrate National Farmers Day
Celebrating National Farmers Day can take on a few different forms but may partially depend on where a person lives. Have some fun making plans and celebrating these salt of the earth folks with some of these ideas:
Thank a Farmer
One of the best ways to celebrate National Farmers Day would be to begin by thanking a farmer! For those who live in a rural community, this might just mean visiting a friend who is a farmer and wishing them a happy National Farmers Day! Or, head on over to a local farmers market in the area and let the growers there know how much their hard work and effort is appreciated on this important day.
Visit a Working Farm
Those who live in or near the country might want to observe National Farmers Day by participating in activities that reenact the ancient methods of farming before the invention of electricity and modern equipment. Throughout the US, many different communities can be found that allow visitors to get a glance into the past, including places like:
Conner Prairie Farm in Fishers, Indiana
Living History Farm in Urbandale, Iowa
Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River, Minnesota
Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum in West Friendship, Maryland
Join in on Farming Events and Activities
Many times, a state fair is a place where farmers will join together to show off their produce or animals. There may even be some local festivals to attend that are centered around local produce like a pumpkin festival, a corn festival or an apple festival. These types of gatherings are often places where a variety of types of local farmers can be found.
City dwellers can choose to celebrate National Farmers Day by taking a trip to a rural area and visiting a local farmers’ market. There is no doubt that the fruits and vegetables encountered alone should make up for the drive!
Learn Interesting Facts About Farming
National Farmers Day is a perfect time to brush up on some facts and statistics related to the appreciation of farming. Check out some of these:
Around 97% of farms in the US are family owned and operated.
In 2019, more than 22 million US jobs were related to agriculture and food.
Only 2% of the American population are the farmers who feed everyone else!

What is Canton Fair?
The Canton Fair, also known as China Import and Export Fair, was established in the spring of 1957. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of PRC and the People's Government of Guangdong Province and organized by China Foreign Trade Centre, it is held every spring and autumn in Guangzhou, China.
As a comprehensive international trading event with the longest history, the largest scale, the most complete exhibit variety, the largest buyer attendance, the most diverse buyer origin and the greatest business turnover in China, Canton Fair is hailed as China's largest Fair and the barometer of China's foreign trade.
As the window, epitome and symbol of China's opening up and an important platform for international trade cooperation, Canton Fair has withstood various challenges and never been interrupted since its inception.
It has been successfully held for 135 sessions and established trade relations with more than 229 countries and regions around the world. The accumulated export volume has amounted to about USD 1.5 trillion and the total number of overseas buyers attending the Canton Fair onsite and online has exceeded 10 million.

4 Essential Tips for Attending the Canton Fair
Being properly prepared beforehand will make the whole experience much more pleasant. Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your visit:
Tip 1: Before You Book Your Trip
Which phase will the products you are interested in fall under? Make sure you book your trip at the right time.
Research Exhibitors-Identify Key Exhibitors: Use the fair’s website to find exhibitors that match your interests. Create a list of booths you want to visit and note their locations.
Are you going to need a guide and translator? Some of the exhibitors will speak English but a translator may be needed at times. There is also a big difference between Chinese culture and Western culture. It will pay you to learn what some of these differences are before you leave so you get the most out of the experience.
It’s a good idea to stay at least three to four days to get the most out of your trip – there is too much to see in even one or two days.
Pre-register online before you leave to make it easier when you get there.
WeChat is an extremely popular way to communicate in China due to restrictions on many forms of social media. Download the WeChat app and start getting to know it’s features.
Tip 2: When You Pack
You will need to pack comfortable clothes and shoes. Expect a lot of walking; comfortable footwear is a must. Consider the weather and the business setting.
Pack a couple of notebooks and also work out some generic questions you will ask prospective suppliers like what the minimum order quantities are, customizability, etc.
Make sure that you have either a bag on wheels or a backpack to take with you to the fair. You will receive a number of business cards, pamphlets, etc. throughout the day and these get heavy to carry after a while.
Have plenty of business cards made to take with you – this helps to convince exhibitors that you are a serious business person and many will want a business card if you ask for a brochure.
Tip 3: Know How to Get to and From the Fair
There are a lot of options when it comes to getting to and from the fair.
The cheapest and easiest is usually to take the hotel shuttle. Just make sure that you know what times they arrive and leave because they are very strict about keeping to schedule.
The metro system will take you just about anywhere you want to go but it is easy to get yourself lost. Learn the route you need to take and what stations you must get off at the upfront. Download a Baidu Map APP or Gaode Map App, just enter your destination, and the App will show you the metro route very clearly.
Taxis are relatively inexpensive but there have been reports of taxi drivers being less than scrupulous with tourists. This won’t always be the case but it pays to be on your guard.
Ride-hailing. DiDi is similar to Uber. In China, DiDi is the dominant ride-hailing platform and offers a variety of services tailored to local needs.
Tip 4: At the Canton Fair
Get too involved in conversations with the exhibitors you are interested. This is where your notebooks come in handy. Looking up information about the companies that you were interested in and do some more in-depth reading on the products you were interested in so that you can whittle down the list of people to speak to.
Network Effectively-Engage with exhibitors and fellow attendees. Look for scheduled networking events to meet other professionals.

Yarn Expo autumn 2024 to sate industry’s sustainability demands in august
Shanghai, 20 June 2024. With eco-friendly products in the spotlight, this year’s spring show signaled a positive outlook for the global yarn and fiber market. Set to continue the momentum, Yarn Expo Autumn 2024 will open doors from 27 – 29 August at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), where exhibitors will showcase a wide spectrum of in-demand, innovative, and sustainable yarns and fibers. Held concurrently with the 30th edition of Intertextile Apparel, as well as CHIC and PH Value, the fair will see the entire value chain come together for active business and insight exchange, encouraging industry growth and connection.
Driven by a raft of societal development factors, such as the introduction of new fabrics and significant Asia-Pacific population growth, the global textile yarn market is projected to reach USD 17.87 billion by 2031[1]. Expressing her confidence in the market and Yarn Expo, Ms. Wilmet Shea, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, commented: “As daily essentials, yarns, and fibers are always needed – especially those reflecting sustainability efforts due to rising public awareness. With high visitor flow and positive feedback at recent editions, Asia’s leading yarn and fiber trade platform remains a hotspot for innovation and sustainability amongst global buyers, and we are eager for our exhibitors to benefit again this autumn.”
A well-known platform for sustainable upstream sourcing, the fair will align with the Texpertise Econogy initiative (the umbrella for Messe Frankfurt’s sustainability activities at its more than 50 textile trade shows worldwide). Set to focus strongly on eco-friendliness in response to market needs, the upcoming autumn show’s green initiatives will span the high-traffic Trend Forum, as well as multiple seminars and product showcases.
Exhibitors from a number of countries and regions have already confirmed their participation, including China, France, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Singapore, Türkiye, Vietnam, and more. Once again, business matching meetings will be organized to pair suppliers with relevant buyers.
Pleased with his sourcing options at last year’s autumn show, Mr Mani Kant, Director of Bishnu Texport Pvt. Ltd, India, commented: “I see more potential suppliers and many visitors. Sustainable and biodegradable products are my main concern this year because most of our clients are looking for these kinds of products, to supply to European and US apparel brands. Recycling yarns and fibers are especially plentiful here. I have visited many exhibitions, but I think Yarn Expo is one of the best platforms to source yarns, learn about new trends, and meet many suppliers in one place, which is a big time and money saver.”
Eclipsing the success of Yarn Expo Autumn 2023, the 2024 spring fair welcomed nearly 22,000 buyers from 107 countries and regions. At both editions, regenerated and cotton products were two of the most sought-after categories at the fairground, and are expected to be high on buyers’ lists this autumn.
Yarn Expo Autumn will be held concurrently with Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics – Autumn Edition, CHIC, and PH Value. The four fairs will bring the fiber and yarn, apparel fabrics and accessories, fashion, and knitted garments industries together under one roof, with the resultant synergy allowing exhibitors and buyers to maximize their business opportunities.
Yarn Expo Autumn is organized by Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and the Sub-Council of Textile Industry, CCPIT. For more details, please visit www.yarn-expo-autumn.com.
Yarn Expo Autumn will be held from 27 – 29 August 2024.
