OCtober: Josephine and Madeline
I decided to give myself a little breather between uploading character profiles and do some traditional stuff for a change.
I’m curious to know if there’s a city you’d rather visit between them, so here are their tourism pages for you to check out:
Grande Prairie | Medicine Hat
Below is some meta stuff about the ‘research’ (if you can even call it that, it was more of a vibe check) I did for re-doing the profiles. Read on, if it intrigues you. (And yes, I’m doing similar comparisons for the remaining six characters).
Small Cities: MH and GP
Medicine Hat and Grande Prairie are cities with similar populations and similar industries, though oppositely located and seemingly growing in opposite directions. This article succinctly compares and contrasts the two cities and their points in their own stories: Medicine Hat, a sleepy, safe, retirement community content in its size and committed to careful long term planning; Grande Prairie, a boomtown with an increasingly young population and new developments nearly outpacing new residents. Both cities are reacting to the shifts in the energy industry described in the article, and since then also must manage dramatic political changes and an ongoing pandemic.
Website Round Up: Preface
While I was revisiting these character profiles, I took a look at how cities represented themselves on their municipal sites and tourism sites rather than how cities were represented in the news or in stereotypes, as the latter already tend to live in the back of my head. I was interested to see who the target audiences for each city were, what they considered their strengths, and how much effort each city put into putting its own identity on display. I was also interested into what ideas sort of fed into any pre-existing confirmation bias I had about each city's personality as well as interested in what narratives might be used to counteract negative stereotypes.
The first thing I tended to notice was the overall information architecture of each city's website. How easy were they to navigate? What kinds of information did they have? How did they organize it? How did they communicate that information?
Municipal: Out and About
Overall, both sites were easy to navigate and had an "About" page within the first two menus. City pages seemed equally attentive to attracting new residents and investment as they were to providing residents with relevant, updated information. Both cities also featured images of their skylines on their home pages.
Medicine Hat's "About" page tends to focus on the beauty of the surrounding geography, the feeling of community safety, and the mysterious "Medicine Hat Advantage". The city combines this page with a brief historical overview and touches briefly on the origin of the city's name and flag.
Grande Prairie's "About" page tends to focus on the youth and diversity of the community, the economic opportunities, and the importance of the area to the surrounding region. The page elaborates a little more on the amenities in the city as well as a map demonstrating where Grande Prairie is located in North America.
Medicine Hat's subpages are few and include a photo gallery and a page on the City's branding. The brand stood out to me out of all of the city pages I visited around the province: Medicine Hat is very committed to creating this attractive and aesthetic self-image based on feedback from residents that I didn't really see reflected elsewhere (other than perhaps Calgary, which took the branding to an extreme).
Grande Prairie's subpages seem to be a more concerted effort to attract investment and new residents: they repeat their about page in French, have numerous pages dedicated to economic statistics and census data, and have a brief history section that focuses on economic development. Interestingly, none of the About pages seem to make any mention of Grande Prairie's indigenous origins at all.
Municipal: If You Lived Here...
Both cities have downloadable guides for prospective residents.
Medicine Hat's brochure is short with many large photos and each page introduced with a key word or feeling they want to evoke ("Rich, Beautiful, Warm, Safe,"). The guide does not seem to be frequently updated and has a bit of a timeless quality.
Grande Prairie's guide appears to be updated annually and goes more into depth about current events and amenities. The guide is full of ads and invitations for local businesses, realtors, schools, etc. in combination with more historical, geographical, and statistical information about the city.
Tourism: Staycation Spotlights
Finally, both cities also have tourism pages.
While both cities provide space for neighbouring towns and counties to share some of the spotlight, Grande Prairie's tourism site is dedicated to the entire region. The city is a subpage on the same level as its neighbouring communities.
Both cities are currently promoting staycation guides to encourage local residents to enjoy their summers locally due to COVID-19 restrictions. Medicine Hat encourages the use of the hashtag MyMHSummer and has several downloadable zoom backgrounds showcasing the geographical beauty around the city. Grande Prairie's currently spotlighting curated day trips within the region called "The Grande Plan", which is also very adorable.
Tourism: Sugar We’re Going Downtown
Both cities describe their downtowns on distinct pages.
Medicine Hat focuses on the city's historic character and particularly emphasizes its expressive, creative and artistic charm. The rest of the page functions as a catalogue of websites of businesses and organizations, many of them exclusive to the area, located downtown.
Grande Prairie's page is once again more specific and touches on arts, sports, events, and particularly shopping. Never before in my life have I seen a place so intensely proud of having so many pub-style franchises and never before have I seen such chains be held to equal importance with independent, local business.
A side note, but Grande Prairie self-describes as "like that friend who’s always up for whatever you want to do." Aww.
Tourism: Guidebook, Check
Both cities also have downloadable, annually updated Visitor's Guides
Medicine Hat's guide opens to several double spread images, completely without text. It launches directly in to the legend of the city's name and uses the historic downtown as a starting point, concentrating on arts and culture before dining and outdoor activities.
Once again, shopping is front and centre on Grande Prairie's list with no fewer than three exclamation marks. Outdoor activities and sports come close after, and descriptions of each region including the city proper bring up the end.

CANADA - MAIN THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW 🇨🇦❤️
Description: Canada is the second largest country in the world, and even though it has a relatively small population of only 37 million people, it’s full of rich culture, delicious food, very nice people, and important historical places - it also has one of the Top 10 “good life-quality” cities in the world, Vancouver, which has one of the best life qualities in the world, with low crime rates, good education sites (Some of the best schools and universities in North America) and great life-living prices. It also has a great shopping area, the downtown section offers brands like GUCCI, Hugo Boss, and some cheaper ones like American Eagle and Urban Outfitters.
Traditional Clothes: So, we can divide this into 2 parts, one that includes the bigger cities and the modern part of the nation; casual clothing, stylish, modern, colorful and overall 21st century fashion that we all know. Then, we have the historical clothing made from Indian Tribes in the northern and colder sites of the country - made with Caribou’s skin with bright colours and interesting patterns. They also use Caribous for food supplies.
Traditional Food: Probably the most popular and known dish is “Poutine”, originally from Quebec, the dish is a traditional and peculiar plate made out of French fries with sliced cheese that melts, and brown gravy over it all, very salty and good. Calgary Beef is also usually used among various dishes and recipes.
Holidays: Canada Day: Celebrated on July 1st - it is like Independence Day for the US - it celebrates the unification of the 3 colonies, Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, making them the Colony of Canada managed by the UK.

A Decision at the Crossroads
A Heartland AU - Chapter 4 – Finale
While Ty went to fetch his phone Amy popped open one of the side panels on the trailer and unsnapped the table that was first in line. She reached her arms wide to grab it and start lifting it out when Ty showed up.
“Whoa easy Amy, I’ll get it.”
“I’m fine.”
“Of course you are now back up please.”
“Thank you Ty.” She said and stepped aside “and 5 of the chairs please.”
“Six actually Kelsey’s coming.”
“Kelsey ?”
“Dr. Burton, my namesake apparently.” He said laying the table on it’s side and unfolding the legs. “Hey, this is nice set up.”
“We take trips with kids, believe me a table is always easier and cleaner than watching them balance plates. Besides it’s more homey and civilized.”
“I’ll file that away” he said maneuvering the table and then placing chairs as Amy opened and gave them a wipe with a damp cloth as well as the table. She had also removed a little basket with a tablecloth sealed in a zip loc bag, and began to spread it. As well as counting out silverware found in the basket as well.
“Ty there’s another basket with plates and more pitchers.” She said watching him walk over as she grabbed one pitcher from her now empty basket and put it on the table.
They set the table together, each handling three settings and Amy ran in for a roll of paper towels. He watched as she took a second to look at the table, nodded and walked over to lower herself into a chair slowly. She was wearing a blue dungaree dress that went down to her knees, it had ¾ sleeves and embroidery along the hem and collar. Obviously a maternity dress, he was captivated by her shape.
“You need to stop staring at me Ty, I’m becoming very self conscious, I already think I look like a beach ball.”
“You don’t, I’m sorry, you look great. Two kids, one on the way, I’m, I don’t know….”
“Three actually, you’re the first to hear, Clint Riley called, they have a foster for us, a young boy named Luke Kashani, he’s nine. Clint’s bringing him Monday.”
“Clint Riley, he’s still around huh. That’s nice, keeping that tradition going.”
“Yeah, Scott, you, Georgie, remember Badger, it’s nice.”
“Mitch mentioned Georgie and something with Lou, he also told me about the divorce.”
“Georgie was an orphan who ran away from her foster family in Okotoks, she stowed away in Grandpa’s pickup and found her way to Heartland. She was a keeper. The divorce is what it was I guess, it’s now amicable with benefits apparently, works for them.”
“Georgie lives with Lou at Heartland ?”
“Lou took a condo in town when she became Mayor and lives there with Katie. We fixed up the loft when I got back from Europe as a nice studio and I lived there alone and then with Mitch for awhile before moving to Saddle River, his family ranch, his parents have an independent living condo in Calgary. Georgie and Quinn are engaged and live in the loft, Grandpa and Lisa live in the house.”
“I heard Jack married Lisa, I saw an article about the Hall of Fame that mentioned it. I’m sorry about your dad Amy, I read about his passing.”
“The death of a legend, it was a nice tribute.”
“I saw a tribute to Lou as Mayor too, ordering the stay in place at home and closing Maggie’s early on definitely seemed to make a difference in the area.”
“It did and I think she’ll be remembered for that, this is her last term, she’s not running again. Enough about Hudson, tell me about you, is there someone special, Kelsey maybe ?”
“Nah, Kelsey and I never, there have been women over the years but I’m free now, I’m picky I guess.”
“Well when it happens you’ll know.”
“You and Mitch look happy.”
“We are, very happy.”
“How’s Jack ?”
“Older, pretty much retired, his arthritis, heart problems, a hard 90, for a former bronc rider and Alberta cowboy not fun.”
“Lisa ?”
“Lisa’s good, the perfect grandmother, she loves the kids. So does Casey, Lyndy adores them both. Mitch’s folks too.”
“Casey, I know this.”
“McMurtry.”
“Right, McMurtry Rodeos, they come around every couple years.”
She noticed quickly enough that he had changed the subject. “Ty ? Are you happy ?”
Ty looked at her and into her eyes, Amy could see that he wasn’t teary but there was disappointment, a small sadness in his face “I guess, I mean I don’t think I’m unhappy.”
“Were you happier yesterday ? Mitch said he thought you might be having a case of the might have beens.”
“I didn’t need to see you for that. The baby was eye popping don’t get me wrong and not in a bad way Amy, you look amazing, really the, well, the high school boyfriend comment, that sort of slammed a world of reality down on me.”
“That’s what we were, we were an actual couple for most of my high school 3rd year, my senior year was a nightmare, we were way better as friends than as a couple Ty, we were a lousy couple.” She was smiling and not being harsh, her tone somewhat softly nostalgic, it was in fact a long time ago.
“Come on, that’s a bit extreme don’t you think ?”
“Really ? You really think ?” She said, again somewhat amused and again not in anything more than the nostalgia of it “we had a good few months, you know Kit and the Quarantine and then I won the Ring of Fire and rather than joining me and perhaps a later bike trip in the summer to see some of the world you decided that you needed to go off alone for a few weeks. So, after the excitement of motels with my dad on tour and while I spent the rest of the summer working and doing what used to be your job on top of mine you came home almost 4 months later with a huge dose of misplaced maturity and Blair. Then Chase stuck his nose in, we were a good couple for 7 months, maybe. Look Ty, I know about what Grandpa did and he told me what led up to that talk and him sending you off. I don’t know what brought you to that point or why you didn’t come home, but it was your decision, we all had to live with your decision.”
“Looking back, I don’t know either honestly.”
“And I don’t know what would have happened if you had but I do know this, my life with Mitch and our kids feels so right to me that I can’t imagine life without him being a part of it, I’m not saying this to hurt you Ty, but your best days are still ahead of you.”
“So this is the honest conversation part we didn’t do back then huh ?”
“This is it.”
“How do you do it and go on together ?”
“You say it, get it out of your system and have sex, then you fix it in the morning.” She answered smiling.
“Well to be fair we weren’t, at the time, you know.” He said smiling.
“That’s true”, Amy agreed and immediately blushed and then agreed with a smirky smile and a nod, “hey, you’ve, you know, since, right ?”
“Huh ?” Then realizing she meant had sex, “oh, oh yeah, no worries.”
“So, you’re still driving a classic truck I see, what’s that an early 70’s GMC ?”
“Yeah,’73, hey, whatever happened to Harley and Old Blue ?”
“After a while Caleb took Harley because, well, it broke my heart to see him every day and he eventually found him a nice home with a couple kids who were going to share him.”
“Sorry, I really wanted to,,,,, forget it. And the truck ?”
“Grandpa kept the truck running and in front of the house for months figuring if nothing else you’d show up in the night and drive it off but you didn’t and one day it wouldn’t start so he hauled it next to Goldie swearing he’d fix it one day.”
“So it’s just sitting there rotting ?”
“Well no actually, about the time Caleb sold Harley I was sick of looking at it so I got rid of it.”
“You sold it.”
“Well, in the interest of honesty, not exactly.”
“What does that mean, exactly ?”
“I attached the promise ring to the ignition key and had it crushed.”
“You had it crushed ?”
“I needed closure Ty, it was invigorating, a grand release of emotions.”
Ty stared at her for a few seconds in shock and then Amy started laughing and then holding her stomach bent over and laughing. “I’m sorry Ty.”
“It’s Ok” he said laughing along with her.
“Oh here, give me your hand.” She said reaching out, she loves it when I laugh “come on silly give me your hand” she prodded seeing the look on his face.
Finally she grabbed his hand and hauled it over, “come here I don’t bite,” gently she turned his palm and lay it over the right side of her belly holding her hand over his. A few seconds later she smiled, “there, feel that ?”
When she stretched out her leg rather than kicking Ty identified a second feeling and realizing it was really no different that any animal understood “that’s a stretch.”
“That’s it” she said gently releasing the pressure. “I think we’ll call her Marion, it’s time. Marion Fleming Cutty.”
“That’s really great, so Lyndy.”
“Lyndy Sarah, Mitch’s grandmother. Jackson Timothy and Marion no middle yet.”
“And Luke was it ?”
“Luke Kashani. I guess we’ll need something for a toast, is there a place to get some wine close by ?
“I have beer for dinner and a couple bottles of champagne I can donate to the cause. You drink ?”
“Oh no, I‘ve had a couple sips of champagne as toasts, wedding night and the like, but not, no, I don’t. Especially pregnant.”
“It was just a question Amy.”
She smiled and nodded, “you wouldn’t by any chance have any ice in there for the water ?”
“There’s an ice machine in the barn for ice packs and stuff.”
“You get the champagne, I’ll do the ice.” She said pushing herself up with a grunt.
He smiled watching her move, almost awkwardly, before turning to the house while she walked slowly into the barn.
She wasn’t at the table when he returned and neither were the pitchers so he walked over to the barn where he found the pitchers full of ice on a small table by the barn door and then heard her on the other side by the paddock. Following her voice he turned around the barn and found her engrossed in conversation with the three rescues she had never met. He stood there watching her and the horses who seemed very anxious to be close. The soft sing song pater of her voice a sweet memory for him, the miracle girl.
She turned and smiled “Oh hey, I saw them and figured I’d say hi. We should probably get them stalled and fed.”
“As soon as the guys get back we’ll get it done, you’re wearing a dress, come on.”
They returned to the table after Ty filled the cooler he carried out with ice as well, as a truck Amy did not know pulled up and an early 40’s woman stepped out and over. She had a welcoming smile and a pretty face.
Amy looked up and smiled, “you must be Kelsey, it’s good to meet you, I’m Amy Fleming, Mitch’s wife” she finished extending her hand.
“Kelsey Burton, good to meet you Amy,”
“Sit, relax, we’re waiting for Mitch and Matt to get back.”
“How far along are you if you don’t mind my asking.”
“Little over 5 months I guess, you have kids ?”
“Two, one about to start high school and one about to go to college. Mitch said this is your third, we never got to three before the arguing got too bad, we married way too young.”
They all turned as Mitch’s truck came onto the property, the large Cummins Diesel was not quiet as it pulled up.
Amy smiled when he got out the cab and opened the back door along with Matt repeating the act on the passenger side.
Ty walked off to grab the cooler he had put by the barn and offered beers to all. Amy poured a few waters on her side of the table as Kelsey helped with the food and Mitch and Matt led the horses into the barn.
Once laid out Kelsey examined the table.
“This is a lot of food you guys.” Kelsey said.
Mitch who had come out the barn wiping his hands on a paper towel glanced over at Amy who grinned and him and made a face “don’t you dare.” She said blushing.
“Still eats her weight ?” Ty asked seeing the exchange only to have a dinner roll thrown his way which he caught.
“Hey, what happened to civilized dinner ?” Ty said laughing before sitting down.
Dinner was long and drawn out. Kelsey and Ty talked about the practice, Matt had sheriff stories and Amy and Mitch talked about adventures of their own and their kids. Amy was surprised at the chemistry between Kelsey and Ty and the looks they passed to each other like old friends but maybe something more. Amy was past the age thing, her dad and Casey and Jack and Lisa proved that. She was not surprised at all that Ty was friends with Kelsey’s kids or that Ty caught every baseball and hockey game her sons played, in and out of school. At one point during a lull in the eating Ty lifted the champagne so that Amy could see.
“Good a time as any.” She said reaching for clean cups and passing them over.
“Champagne, what are we celebrating ?” Mitch asked.
“Us” Amy said as Ty passed cups around after the big pop.
“Why us ?”
“Because sweetheart congratulations are generally tendered when one is told he’s about to become a father, Clint called before, we have a 9 year old foster son arriving Monday morning, Luke Kashani.”
“Luke Kashani, 9 years old, wow.” Mitch repeated.
“Congratulations you two, that’s wonderful” Kelsey announced raising her glass and tapping it to Mitch’s and then Amy’s iced tea that Mitch remembered to get. Soon they were onto 9 year old boy stories and Amy reached out to grab the platter of ribs and dropped them. Not hard but everyone turned to her as she reached for her side.
“Easy girl, mom’s just grabbing for some ribs.” She whispered and then seeing Mitch’s look took his hand as she had Ty’s and then kissed his palm, something she had not done to Ty before placing it on the spot.
“She’s really going at it.” He said smiling and then leaned forward to grab the ribs and bring them closer for Amy who smiled and kissed him before pushing a few onto her plate.
“What do they put in this Cole slaw, it’s always awesome and I can’t figure it out.” Kelsey asked putting some on her plate.
“It’s horseradish” Amy said after swallowing.
“Is this a pregnancy thing ?” Matt asked “heightened palate ?”
Amy shrugged trying to swallow her next bite before answering, “It’s years of studying herbs and alternate remedies. Single ingredients are easy usually unless the tastes are ambiguous like licorice and anise. Or I guess it could be the pregnancy thing” she finished looking up with a smile.
Kelsey was the first to leave, she had to get home to her teenagers. Mitch and Amy said goodbye as they wouldn’t be seeing her in the morning. Matt was game to leave as well, he had an early shift in the morning but promised to stop before they left which was planned for 9:00 AM. Ty helped clear away and helped Mitch with stowing the table and chairs while Amy split the food as Ty insisted they take enough for lunch on the way home. He promised he’s see them in the morning so goodnights were easy.
Later in the evening in the afterglow of their lovemaking Mitch had gone to get some cold water for Amy who settled herself into her current comfortable position, on her left side, pillow between her legs and her arm perched on her belly. Mitch lovingly held the glass out and helped her take a drink without moving much or spilling and then settled as usual behind her, his arm sliding under hers as he leaned forward to kiss her shoulder.
“You had a chance to catch up with Ty ?”
“I did, it was nice.”
“He Ok ?”
“You were a bit right I think, the could have beens but we had a good talk, it went well.”
“Seemed to from my perspective. How about you ? Could have beens ?”
“Not on your life Mitchell Cutty, I couldn’t imagine spending my life with anyone but you.”
“Good to hear and back at you Amy Fleming.”
Amy leaned back as far as she could to catch his lips with hers for a moment before returning to her spot.
In the morning Amy woke to the closing of a car door and a truck start. Peeking out the window she saw Ty’s truck drive off and wondered if he was just getting out without a proper goodbye. When she finally showered and dressed and headed outside with a cup of tea and her breakfast of muffins and clementines she found a note tucked into the trailer door. It said that he was called away for a calving that wasn’t going well but expected to be back by nine when they were scheduled to leave.
Matt arrived after Mitch got his coffee going and decided to wait with them while it perked and join Mitch for a cup. He wasn’t surprised to find Ty gone for an emergency, that was his job as long as Kelsey had kids to get off to school and he was fine with it.
Before he left Matt got a call from Ty and explained that he was almost done but rather than make Mitch and Amy wait he’d meet them for their goodbye as a scenic pull off about 5 miles down the road south, the direction they were heading anyway.
Matt helped them pack up and load the horses, made sure they knew where to go and watched and waved as Amy pulled out first followed by Mitch and the trailer.
They parked and leaned against the overlook fence when Mitch received a text that Ty was on the way. He joined them 10 minutes later full of apologies that they discounted as completed unwarranted and totally understood.
Mitch went first and shook Ty’s hand before a brief bro hug and then walked off to close the trailer that they had opened for the horses benefit.
Amy walked over to Ty and gently ran a finger gently across his brow to move his hair away from his eyes.
“I’d forgotten just how green they were.” She said dropping her hand and smiling.
“Back home ?”
“I have to tell them Ty but we’ll leave contact up to you.”
“Thanks.”
Amy heard the door trailer handle locked into place and took a step forward to reach around Ty for a hug before stepping back.
“Find yourself a woman who loses herself in those eyes Ty and then hold on.”
“I’ll try ?”
“She can be a little older you know.”
“She’s my boss Amy.”
“And soon to be your partner, think about it, you’re a good catch with a big heart Ty Borden, it’s time to stop running. Oh, and I was technically your boss for a while there.” Then she leaned forward and kissed each of his cheeks gently. “Don’t be a stranger, you’d make Grandpa’s day with a call.”
“I will.”
“Goodbye Ty, it’s nice knowing you’re doing well.”
He walked her to her truck as Mitch got into the cab of his and Ty helped Amy in and watched her settle and buckle up before closing her door.
“Bye Amy, It was great seeing you and meeting Mitch.”
Amy smiled and nodded as Ty stepped back and she shifted into drive and drove out followed by Mitch who smiled and waved.
A few miles down the road Amy smiled when the next song was announced and she switched on the truck to truck radio to have Mitch join in when she started singing.
Together, they were the perfect couple.
“Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye ……..”
The End.

Over the holidays, I saw the first Jurassic Park movie in full for the first time since I attended a preview screening of it back when it first came out. It holds up well, but a statement by Jeff Goldblum’s character (slightly paraphrased above - he originally started with “Your scientists were...”) particularly resonated with me.
From TV and film franchise writers and producers (oh, so many examples in the past couple of years), to politicians, to bean-counters who decide to end people’s careers in order to save a few dollars, I wish more people would pay heed to these words of wisdom. (Yes, I know the phrase didn’t originate with Jurassic Park, but we live in a pop culture-driven society. More people will have heard Jeff say this than any literary or philosophical equivalent.)
I actually saw Goldblum in person at the Calgary Comic Expo last year. Sadly, even though I’d been given a VIP pass for my birthday, the lineups were so long I never got the chance to get his autograph. I always get the impression he’s just playing himself in these films (and I actually know people who are like his Independence Day character. Come to think of it I went to school with a guy who was basically a young version of the Gamemaster, too, less the melting-people part... 😂).

The Worlds Worst Best Friends
Scrolling through my instagram feed while waiting for my connecting flight to Sapporo, I came across a story posted by Stuart Baker captioned “Hello Tokyo!” Turns out, we were both heading to Hokkaido, Japan to ski, arriving on the exact same day! Quite naturally, and after months of being mum since our last chat, I sent Stuart a casual message reading “see you there mannn.” Now, to give this coincidence significant meaning, I must first contextualize my friendship with Stuart. We have known each other since we were 3, went to school together in Calgary until we were 12, and ended up at the same University in Kingston, ON when we were 18. Our first year at Queen’s was a riot and we spent most of frosh week together filled with laughs and great times. No more than a few times per year throughout our university career, we would get together for the best of times and laugh hysterically. However, our friendship never materialized into something consistent. We would have heaps of fun, acknowledge the good time that was had, and carry on with our routines among our own circles. Usually, when we would get together, we would joke about our shared sense of humour and how natural our friendship was but how inadvertently resistant we were to buying into it. We were, in the purest form, the worlds “worst best friends”. This has since been the most consistent theme of our friendship. Fast forward to February 3, 2019 where we realize that we had both independently planned a ski trip to Japan arriving on the exact same day… same travel backpack, same ski helmet, same wrist-watch, similar itineraries, and both avid skiers! How on earth we managed to stay unaware of each others love for skiing in and of itself speaks volumes to our sustained argument that we are the worlds worst best friends.

Moving Forward
Or Staring into the abyss and deciding I may as well run on a treadmill while doing so
Since deciding to not do grad school apps this year (and thus no grad apps next year), I have quite a bit of free time ahead of me. At some point, the time between undergrad and post-grad changes from being a gap year to just being a span of life (I’m guessing once the 12-month mark is passed). As a result, I’ve had to reframe my thinking about this current stage in my life from being something transient and inconsequential to something freeing, open-ended, and scary. I could do anything right now, so what do I do?
My answer has been to go to the gym, sleep more, bathe more, and try to fill my time with hobbies and relaxation. I was pretty fucked up at the end of my undergrad degree and it is taking a concerted effort to repair my body and mind, but this is helping I think. I still have a ways to go (oral hygiene, regular baths, cleaning pet cages, therapy, budgeting, meditation) but I’ve been handling more balls in the air than I ever could before. Things are improving slowly.
I’ve also been learning how to have relationships with both of my parents and my brother while they separate and divorce. This living situation has been annoying at times, but ultimately being near loved ones is a good thing and is probably helping the healing more than I realize. I’m accepting that I want to stay near Calgary for the time being, meaning I haven’t sent any resumes to Toronto yet, but things could change at some point in the next two years. I feel like employment would be a solid improvement over my fretting and cleaning during the day, but I am afraid I might run out of energy. We will see.
Two things have come up as recent issues I’ve been struggling with. You may have guessed by my shitposts, but I’m probably a demisexual lesbian and have been living in the closet my entire life. Only one person knows right now (my bro) and I’m scared of my parents finding out because they say so much homophobic trash about my brother to me in confidence (expecting me to agree as a fellow straight) and it has made me feel all twisted up inside. The thought of being seen and having them know is something I could go a lifetime without experiencing. My internalized homophobia is extreme, yo. Anyway, I’ve been looking around dating sites for other girls and I’ve found some I’d really like to go out with but living at home makes that impossible. Is social independence worth alienating my parents by moving away?
The other thing is figuring out my philosophy of life, how to approach a career in a capitalist society that undervalues non-medical biological science, and how to reclaim my sense of professional self esteem. Do I want to go into academics? Would a life of quality control testing food be satisfying and easy? Is it better to be happy or to feel significant? Is medical school worth a second consideration? How do I reconcile my current life position with my desire to excel at the forefront of my peers? How do I feel self esteem pursuing a career that is seen as an afterthought by others? How can I embrace the grey area of life and stop putting so much pressure on myself to fulfill the fetishized aspirations my gifted ed teachers forced on me? How can I do science the way I want to? So many questions without answers right now.
I guess all I can do for now is keep up these healthy habits, add more to the list, maybe move out somewhere close by once I have a job, and ask for advice since these questions rarely answer themselves. Oh and happy holidays!

How did we go from the newborn stage to having a preschooler? (Swipe to see a video of Myles when he was only a few minutes old) When they said they grow up so fast, they weren’t kidding. 🥺 I’ll cherish this first day of school moment for the next time I blink, he’ll be graduating high school. 🫣 I never knew what to expect when I tried to imagine what our lives would like. When I found out I was pregnant with Myles, all I had was $3,000 in my bank account and a ticket back to Canada. I was a broke, pregnant grad student who couldn’t afford to buy proper healthy food to eat nor even prepare for any baby items. I was surprised but grateful for the support extended to us during our darkest year. I will never forget the people who were there for us. Too many to tag but again, we appreciate each one of you as we wouldn’t be here without you. 🥹 After graduation and giving birth, we went back home and in the next three years after that, it was basically, a rollercoaster ride. I found a job after six months, lost my job, bought our own place, found another job, left that job for a new one, lost that job, started a communications agency, and now work with the best clients I could ever ask for while having the flexibility I’ve always needed as an independent parent. So yes, the journey felt SO long and difficult and depressing and I have made numerous posts about how low I’ve felt at that time. But when the good times arrive, I feel they needed to be acknowledged as well. This is one of those. A few asked how I felt dropping Myles at school for the first time, and honestly, I thought I would feel sad but when I saw how happy and excited he was, that’s how I ended up feeling, too! I didn’t feel sad but it was still an emotional experience. Here’s to another #Mylestone 🥂 (at Calgary, Alberta) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiACsyZPmlUQnKaZb1_SGkMseJ9BCEKkJgwL540/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced that all restrictions, including the vaccine passport program, will end. However, he warned that cities should not act independently on pandemic health policy, a concern of city officials.
Kenney first singled out municipalities in a Facebook live event on Thursday.
He said the province will announce the phased removal of public health restrictions early next week, and to prevent municipalities from "improving" their own policies, he will "take a look at" amending the Municipal Government Act (MGA).
In a statement on Friday, Kenney doubled down. He advised municipal elected officials to respect the decisions made by the province on public health matters and not interfere with them. "If they want to provide us with input, I'm always open to that," he said. "But at the day, all of us have to learn to live with COVID."
Jyoti Gondek, Calgary Mayor, says municipalities are not part of discussions about public health restrictions with the province.
"(The province) is not a government that partners with municipalities," said Gondek.
There is concern the premier is prioritizing rural Alberta over urban centres in light of the laws that govern municipalities.
"Then it is completely shameful that a premier who should be leading a province through a public health emergency is prioritizing politics."
However, the City of Calgary has acted independently in the past. In August of 2020, Calgary introduced a city-wide mask bylaw before the provincial law took effect.
In the fall of 2021, Calgary passed a bylaw requiring businesses and institutions in the city to participate in the provincial restrictions exemption program. This will be rescinded once the province cancels the program.
For the city to extend this bylaw, a new one would have to be passed. Penner, a Ward 11 Councillor, also expressed concern that cities would cease to receive public health reports.
In her words, "I believe the premier was implying that they could also eliminate health data reporting. And so how could cities make decisions without provincial data?" she asked before adding, "Without being able to have those conversations about how we approach health measures, we are left reacting rather than being able to proactively plan for how we manage and mitigate the risks that COVID presents."
Other Alberta mayors say they do not expect the province to restrict cities' community responsibilities...
"I am committed to exploring options within our authority to protect Edmonton communities and the most vulnerable residents. including kids who cannot be vaccinated at this time. I hope the provincial government will reconsider removing restrictions too quickly," said Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi.
Hyggen tells CTV news that municipalities can enforce public safety to protect citizens and that the province cannot intervene.
"Puzzling and troubling" are the first words of a statement from the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA)."
"Kenney's government's earlier direction conflicts with the restrictive approach it is now considering," said Heron, president of AUMA.
"Alberta has not discussed amending the MGA in previous meetings with Heron, and it's not expected to be discussed."
Municipal government acts have been amended in the past, but legal experts say this type of change would harm the relationship between governments.
According to Hardcastle, law professor at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, this could be done for political reasons. This could be done to preserve the premier's political position.
Hardcastle says the pandemic has sometimes let municipalities, private companies, schools, and universities pass public health rules to fill gaps in pandemic policy.
"It would be an abrupt reversal to prevent municipalities from filling in the gaps left by provincial rules."

“I Am YEG Arts” Series: Lorrie Lawrence, Artist, Coordinator & Co-Founder of the Indigenous Artists Market Collective
Appreciate, don’t appropriate. To artist Lorrie Lawrence, that’s not just a call to action. It’s a step towards Edmonton becoming a city that’s embraced Reconciliation and is healing with and alongside the Indigenous community. It’s a city she already calls home, as does the Indigenous Artists Market Collective (I.A.M) she co-founded in 2018. Today, Lawrence, who’s affectionately known as “Dirty Auntie,” has taken on the role of Coordinator and helped I.A.M become a collective of more than 80 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists who promote authenticity over appropriation, by providing a place for market-goers to purchase authentic, local, Indigenous art.
This upcoming weekend marks the collective’s fourth Annual Holiday Market—a three-day extravaganza showcasing an all-Indigenous lineup of vendors, artists, performers, and all the handcrafted traditional/contemporary crafts you could imagine! The one thing you won’t find? Lawrence’s own artwork. Though she used to think of her art in terms of beadwork and leatherwork, she now feels her artistic role is to weave people and stories. Artist, storyteller, and Auntie to all—This week’s “I Am YEG Arts” story belongs to Lorrie Lawrence.
Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and what keeps you working and living here.
I moved here from Calgary as a toddler with my single mom and our trunk in the 70’s. It’s here in Edmonton that I grew up, had my biggest ups, and my hardest downs, but Edmonton has always been my home. I love that Edmonton is a gathering place for Indigenous peoples from all over North America, whether they come for school, work, or whatever—so many have made this their home.
Tell us a little about what makes the I.A.M Collective community special and what it brings to the YEG arts scene.
The Indigenous Artists Market Collective, or I.A.M Collective for short, is a family, a community, and an inclusive safe space of creativity wherever we go. Comprised of over 75 Indigenous artists, creatives, and knowledge holders, we strive to reclaim spaces/places for Indigenous artists, to bridge the gaps, and break down barriers that have previously kept Indigenous art out of the mainstream marketplace—all while sharing our stories and our teaching—“Appreciate Don’t Appropriate”—with the world around us. We have our home base location at the Edmonton Downtown Farmer’s Market and Fort Edmonton Park on weekends, as well as countless festivals, conferences, and gatherings. Our Annual Holiday Market and signature event is the jam on the bannock. Each year we bring you more artists and entertainers to help INDIGENIZE YOUR HOLIDAY!
So many people now understand the importance of buying local. What do you want people to understand about the importance of buying Indigenous products from Indigenous artists?
We all have heard the importance of shopping local: that the supply chains are not strong, and that our small businesses are struggling. I want people to see the strength of it—for EVERY dollar spent with local artists and entrepreneurs, 65% goes directly back into our local economy. When we support Indigenous artists by making a commitment to Appreciate not Appropriate, we are supporting their independence, their healing journey, their homes and extended families, the traditional skills, and our language and stories. As an urban Indigenous person, these things are so precious and life-giving.
Large events like our Annual Holiday Market are crucial to Indigenous artists obtaining their supplies. For example, a traditional brain-tanned smoked moose hide was approximately $800–1,400 for artists to buy two years ago. Since COVID, hides are $1,800–$3,200 and scarce. Beads and jewellery findings have tripled in cost and are increasingly harder for find due to so many factories closing globally. Stained glass, in some cases, has risen as much as 300% in cost. Large-scale events, like our Holiday Market, allow my artists to earn enough for these expensive supplies, to pay overdue bills, buy holiday gifts/meals for their families, and put a few dollars in their savings in case we have another hard year.
What have partnerships and funding meant to you and the work you do?
During our four years in operation, I.A.M has been so fortunate to have made valuable partnerships with the Edmonton Arts Council, EndPoverty Edmonton, City of Edmonton, Elk Island Park, Fort Edmonton Park, Indigenous Tourism Alberta, and the Edmonton Downtown Business Association, just to name a few. These partnerships allow us to share our stories, art, history, and traditions with a broader audience, making an impact on the journey all of us take toward Reconciliation and a honest and powerful acknowledgment of our history and the path we embark upon together, now as Canadians. Funding in the form of grants, donations, and sponsorship have been crucial to I.A.M Collective’s ability to offer low or no-cost opportunities to all our Indigenous artists.
Tell us about your upcoming Annual Holiday Market and what kind of goods and entertainment people can look forward to.
This is our third year hosting this event, which we started in 2018 in the gym at e4c (Alex Taylor School). Back then, we had no idea the growth and continued success this annual event would have. Each year we have increased our number of artists and added Indigenous entrepreneurs, as well as more live entertainment, door prizes, and good old-fashioned sakihiwewin ᓴᑭᐦᐃᐁᐧᐃᐧᐣ (Love for everyone).
This year’s event, “I.A.M Collective proudly presents—A Very Indigenous Holiday Market 2021,” takes place December 10th, 11th, and 12th at the Alberta Aviation Museum, located on 11410 Kingsway Ave. It will be a showstopping three-day extravaganza that boasts an amazing lineup of over 85 Indigenous artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs. Our entertainment lineup will dazzle you, deck your halls, and get your toes tappin’.
Day 1 (3–11 p.m., suggesting 18+ crowd after 9 p.m.) will include performances from DJ Deadly Nedly, Christopher Lightening live painting w/DJ, Curt Young, Trent Agecoutay, Tammy Lamouche, an all-Indigenous Fashion showcase, a drag showcase by Indigi-Hauz of Beaver Hills, Melody McArthur, a burlesque performance featuring Nipiy Iskwew & Ger Carriere, and a performance from YEG’s very own hip-hop performer & producer Tony Toosick—not to mention the door prizes, a silent auction table, and the healing medicine of laughter (even while masked) and how it’s so needed in the community.
Day 2 (10–7 p.m.) will include a Pow Wow Showcase & Teachings, as well as performances from Demaris Walker, Chubby Cree, Mary Stinchcombe, Christina Hollingworth, Hoop Dancer Dallas Arcand Jr., Amanda Gendron, Ashley GhostKeeper, Lena Daniels, Ger Carrier, Tony Toosick, and Curt Young.
Day 3 (11–6 p.m.) will include a heart-thumping performance from the Metis Child & Family Jiggers, Chubby Cree, Mary Stinchcombe, Amanda Gendron, Zackary Willier, Shonan Awasis, Ashley Ghostkeeper, Curt Young, Shane & Shaneyah Redstar, and a performance from YEG’s very own hip-hop performer & producer Tony Toosick. The door prizes are all items donated by our artists/vendors and will include some amazing locally made items. There will also be a silent auction table to help I.A.M fundraise for operational costs.
The Holiday Market is a free event, but what can visitors do to show their support for all the talented performers and vendors who will be there?
Though admission is free, we are gladly accepting donations of NEW & Gently used winter clothing and footwear, as well as toiletries, women’s sanitary items, gift cards, and cash donations, which will all be divided among local agencies that work with those most in need. We will also have a tip jar on site and have posted a Virtual Tip Jar using GoFundMe.
Tell us about someone who’s been a mentor to you and what you learned and have held on to.
Of course my mother and grandmother, who both had incredible survival skills. The fact that they survived racism, residential school, child abuse, poverty, and each other gives me strength. Of my I.A.M family, I’d say Donna. She’s had the cards stacked against her since day one. She is a true survivor, and no matter what is thrown at her, she does her best to handle it with kindness and a smile. I can only hope to have the grace of these strong women, iskwew, that came before me.
Describe your perfect day in Edmonton. How do you spend it?
A perfect day in Edmonton would start with a hot coffee from my friend Dylan Tootoosis at Cree Coffee Company (found at the Super Flea Market every weekend), a trip to my favourite bead and fabric stores, a long walk and a moment with nature on our glorious river valley pathways, and my dog, Nugget. Next, dinner with one of Edmonton’s greatest treasures, Indigenous Chef Scott Iserhoff of Pei Pei Chei Ow, with amazing land-based foods and laughter and stories. A evening play maybe—I think there would be a showing of BEAR GREASE to watch. Lastly, an hour or two on the couch with my son watching some horror movies together.
You visit Edmonton 20 years from now. What do you hope has changed? What do you hope has stayed the same?
In twenty years, I would love to see I.A.M Collective totally autonomous and a central hub for the city. We would have a place to share stories, teachings, and art. I see a city that has fully embraced Reconciliation and is healing with its Indigenous community. I see places for Indigenous people to practice ceremony, learn their languages, their dances, and speak with elders and knowledge holders within the city. I see Edmonton leading the way in Indigenous business and setting the standard for the rest of the country and world. What I hope would stay the same, is this city’s passion for its history, its roots, and its people. I would love to see our historic buildings still standing and our commitment to nature still strong with our world-renowned parks and green spaces.

Bloody anus caused by mac’n’cheese!!??
My brother is a bit older than me and he went to University at Queens (which is a university in Canada). He grew up with me and my fam in a pretty conservative environment in Calgary, Alberta. Y’know we did the typical stuff that you did in Alberta. We tractor raced, jumped in piles of hay, smoked cigarettes at like 9, y’know typical type of Alberta stuff. But the main thing that I wanna illustrate is how independent our parents pushed us to be. It was like toxically independent. One time my brother got his clothing stuck on the truck and couldn’t really move free so instead of y’know like CALLING FOR HELP??? He instead just kinda stood their and the worst part is when I came home he didn’t even ask for help then he just like stood real still and thought I wouldn’t see him but obviously I did. I helped him out and stuff and he was like fine.
Another time he split his pants during a game of ping pong at school(don’t ask me how I wasn’t there). But instead of calling my mom to bring him new pants he just stayed in the bathroom for the rest of the school day. Now this wouldn’t be too bad if it was like during the last period or something but this was at 10 in the morning. School finished at like 3:30. So this man stayed in the bathroom for like five and a half hours just to be toxically independent in everyone in the family’s eyes.
This would all be fine if my parents like told him and myself to not act like this but they supported this kind of behaviour. They said it was the way it should be for boys. They were totally proud of him the entire way…
Until College…
My brother was in college at Queens like I said. I don’t know if you guys know this but the way Queens’ first year cafeteria works is it has like a buffet and stuff where you can choose like anything you want. My brother’s favourite food at the time (“at the time” being an important part of that) was macaroni and cheese. That meant that with this buffet style of dining my brother could eat as much Mac and cheese as his heart desired. He then proceeded to eat this same wretched food for like four months until he got very sick. The hospital called my dad one day to tell him what happened. My brother was shitting blood for the past couple of days and they had concluded that my brother had scurvy. Here’s the kicker though, my brother knew this for like a month before the hospital visit. My dad is a doctor and could have told him to like eat a single spoonful of fruit or vegetables during this time but my brother decided to suffer in his sickness without asking for help. My brother eventually had to go to the hospital and they told him he had scurvy.
tldr: My brother was so fiercely independent that he literally shit blood for a month without asking advice from my father who is a doctor.
