==Excerpt from "World Historian's History of History", by the anonymous World Historian. A first edition copy, signed "Big fan as always, Warmaster!"==
S: Syrakhanistan.
Syrakhanistan, officially the People's Imperium of Syraqhanistan, and commonly referred to as Syrak, is a vast nation covering the majority of the area once known as the Middle East. With such a dizzying array of attributes to be seen across it's grand visage, it can be difficult to describe it fittingly. But, well, I'm gonna try - as I always do!
As I say, with a huge spread of land that lives slap-bang in the middle of every decent world map, it contains a rather diverse set of natural features. From the vast deserts of the Maghreb Tribal Site, to the cold mountains of the Assyria-Armenia Condominium, it is must always be stated that this nation cannot simply be described as "a typical Middle Eastern nation".
Covering an area of roughly 3 million square miles, it is one of the largest nations in the world, and is considered one of the few remaining Megadiverse nations. It's highest natural landmark is Mt Damavand in the Greater Persepolis Region; a large stratovolcano, it is currently used a giant geothermal generator, providing natural and clean energy to millions. Indeed, the region as a whole remains extremely rich in natural resources - despite the oil reserves running out decades ago; and, with a military to back up words with deeds to the letter, there no longer remains the threat of these resources being forced out of the hands of the people who live here.
Of course, when discussing this nation, special mention must be brought to the technological magnum opuses of the Syraqhanistani urban areas, with the crown jewel being the capital city - Neo-Kirkukihara. We see vast, neon-lit megacities rising from the once barren deserts of the Middle East; bright, shining diamonds promising free housing, jobs, food, and the fastest growing industrial and educational centres in the world. Neo-Kirkukihara itself reaches into the sky with it's housing developments; a vast artificial dome that rises and falls based upon current weather events, along with an artificial weather system; retractable buildings like that out of a sci-fi novel, meaning one person's view of the city will never be the same as another. And, of course, the central Government Palatial Estate - a towering monument to bureaucracy built on the foundations of the ancient Kirkuk citadel (which remains preserved under the foundations of the fortress), mixing Neo-Classical and ethnic Japanese architectural elements with the modern brutalist ideas of the near future, it is currently the second largest artificial structure in the world - second only to the under-construction space-elevator, which remains in processing on the outskirts of the Grand Hejaz Metropolitan Area.
This isn't to say that this nation has lost it's heritage; given it's vast size and hugely decentralised politics, we see tribal nomads camping mere miles away from the high-rise cyberpunk worlds of the urban regions. We see star-lit oases hidden in the desert, under a sky filled with hypersonic aircraft trails. The Hajj - a traditional pilgrimage for the Muslim populace of the world - has become easier than ever, as has the various other religious pilgrimages of the world (all under the eyes of the ambiguously religious, all-seeing state).
Finally, between the space elevator (name pending) and the hypersonic industry, it cannot be overstated how Syrakhanistan has developed it's infrastructure. A clean, almost magical system of industry and energy corporations has taken a perfect market share on infrastructural development in the nation; from cheap yet powerful methods such as nuclear and geothermal power plants, to new scientific projects such as the Super-Maglev rail system that straddles the nation, allowing travel from Casablanca to the Karachi State in under an hour. And, as a socialist (at least, in name and outward opinion like that of the Scandinavian nations) state with gratefully paternalistic instincts, much of this and so much more is free to both citizens and visitors.
Thus, in this brief overview, the author wishes that I could show the reader how truly remarkable this new state is in both size and in environmental diversity; but, as they say, a picture paints a thousand words. But this isn't a picture book, and I am no artist!
S: Syria
A former state that once existed under...

Black Gold (Chapter Three)
Sydney Boutique Hotel; Sydney, Australia, 3:39 A.M.
Another day, another dollar, as they said. Australia was so uncomfortable with wearing suits and ties, as according to the UN and the Commonwealth of Nations dress code, so the second he always got home, he changed into his usual outfits. The outfits consisted of shorts, t-shirts, and savannah hats. Boots and socks, occasionally. Of course, since he was still trying to find a house for himself, he had to live in a hotel room by himself. The Australian States, or his kids, were all grown up and had their own houses. Mainly because they had the chance to go to college at a young age, unlike their father, who had to fight in both World Wars before even considering university so he could get a well-paying job to support his kids. That was well over 70 years ago now, and here he was: a broke college student trying to find a home so he can stop living at this cursed hotel. Australia sat down on his couch and grabbed his phone, immediately getting a call that was rather coincidental to when he always grabbed his phone out. He answered the phone, only to be greeted by a scream and then the line going dead. “What in the bloody..?” Australia muttered, looking at his phone to see who the caller really was. He felt his heart drop to his stomach when he saw it was from his older brother, New Zealand. What had happened? Australia quickly changed before heading outside, only to find his brother surprisingly okay. “Zealand? What even happened?” Australia asked worriedly. “I heard a scream and--” New Zealand couldn’t help but chuckle. “Australia. That was my Halloween voicemail. Sorry about that.”
“You can’t scare me like that, mate! Do you know how terrified I was?!”
“Haha, yeah, I know. Sorry. I’ll change it. Anyway, we have to go to the Commonwealth of Nations building. Again.”
Australia sighed in annoyance. He didn’t even bother changing back into his suit, mainly because he knew that doing such a task would just delay him and his brother from getting there on time. He got into the passenger seat of his brother’s car, which was a 2010 Ford colored in navy blue that their father had given New Zealand.
Commonwealth of Nations, London, United Kingdom; 7:19 P.M.
After a long drive to the airport, plus a 23-hour long flight from Sydney to London, Australia and New Zealand finally made it in time for the meeting. Of course, they had to stay with their parents until that Sunday, which meant that they would be in their childhood bedroom that they shared for about three to four whole days, plus today, making it five. “Ah, hello, Australia and New Zealand,” Brunei greeted them formally at the door. The two brothers greeted Brunei as they kept walking. Of course, due to Australia’s much taller height than his brother, he saw their father first. “What’s been going on?” Australia immediately asked. “Mom said that you left for London after America had a World War I bomb in his house, then you went missing for three days.” The UK sighed. “Yeah, I know. I went on a secret mission in Buenos Aires with Argentina to figure out certain fault lines. I just returned an hour ago, and now I have a meeting to attend despite my lack of sleep and energy,” the Brit replied, looking at his son.
“Well, what’s going on anyway? You know, with China and Southeast Asia?”
“It’s a long story. Basically, China’s power over the world has been increasing tensions within Asia, Europe, and even North and South America. Even Central America is starting to grow uneasy with China’s growing power. Though, little can be done to stop such a global superpower. The Middle East has been getting worse with the tensions, especially between Bangladesh and Pakistan. The two, once united as father and son, have been arguing due to India’s grip on Bangladesh. I’m sure you know of China’s intentions with the Philippines and North Korea. If not, then that’s a whole other story I’d rather not get into at the moment. In other words besides my own, the world is going on complete lockdown, and that’s all because of Russia and other OPEC members trying to gain Wyomingite oil for their own profits.”
Australia couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Though, China had the tightest grips on himself, his father, and Canada. The three had all been easily manipulated into thinking that China could do no wrong, even when he had been one of the reasons the Cold War even began back in the late 1940s. “Wow,” was all the Australian would say to such a situation. “Mr. UK, Mr. Australia,” Sri Lanka suddenly said to the two. “You’re both needed in Pakistan’s office immediately.” The two nodded, quickly walking to Pakistan’s office in the Middle Eastern section of the Asian Wing. They both hoped it was nothing serious, but who knows. They could both be in deep, deep trouble the second they enter that office.
After a 10-minute elevator ride from the Oceania and European Wings, the two swiftly made their way to Pakistan’s office, knocking on the door before entering. “Pakistan. You called us?” The UK asked firmly. “Yes, yes. Come in. The door isn’t locked,” Pakistan replied from the office. Australia walked in with his father. “What seems to be the issue?” Australia asked.
“Well, I called you two here specifically because of China’s tight, tight grip on us all. Firstly, with the UK. His grip on you is the tightest; always has been, always will be. If you disobey anything he says, your economy will collapse, and so will your nation.”
The UK visibly flinched at the thought. “I know. He also owns half of Australia’s land and helps with his economy as well, whilst he is merely your ally whom you have been having particularly horrid tension within recent years,” he said.
“I know, which is what I would like to acknowledge. His grip on Australia is almost as tight as yours, whilst his on me is hardly even considered a grip. Merely, I am just a puppet for his control. Australia must do everything China says, or else his economy will suffer greatly, but could possibly recover if Australia was forgiven by China for certain actions that he could possibly commit. For example, Australia could make propaganda about China’s communist government, which means that Australia is speaking out against a government that forbids such an act of treason against the Supreme Leader, or the dictator as many other democratic nations refer to them as. If that were to be the case of a situation, China could cut off all trade within Australia’s land, shut down factories, and stop network services, which could cause banks to close and many other tragic collapses in the government. The Australian stock market could collapse, and your own son would be in so much debt that he would never be able to pay it back,” Pakistan said.
Australia stepped a small bit closer to the UK. “Well, what about you?” Australia finally said with enough effort to speak once again. “What will happen if you disobey China?” “Simple,” Pakistan replied. “I will be executed in front of my daughters, Islamabad and Karachi, and my daughters will suffer greatly because of my own actions that were intended to be against China himself, or his government. I do not wish to die in front of my young daughters when even they cannot grasp the idea of death nor grief at such a young age.”
The UK sighed. “We need to deal with China before it’s too late. He could go to America next or even France. He could even reach U.S cities and states,” he said firmly. “He already has,” Australia replied quietly. “Georgia and a few other U.S States rely on China to live. He is their best trading partner. I mean, it’s better than who Louisiana trades with.”
“Who does that boy trade with?” The UK asked hesitantly.
“Saudi Arabia. One of the worst countries ever. He only asks for sand and weapons, which Louisiana, along with Uncle Scotland and a few others, are struggling to keep as their main exports to Saudi Arabia. Especially now since Riyadh, who is Saudi’s son, is now in charge whilst his father is in custody,” Australia answered. Now, it was up to those three to lead a revolution, whether they died in it, or died after it. They needed to break China’s control.
This is only because China is the reason as to why families are being ripped apart, why children are becoming orphans like Riyadh, and even why brothers and sisters are betraying one another for land, just like China had done to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War.
It was their job to either save the world or let everyone become puppets to China.
Cape Town, South Africa; 5:24 P.M.
Even African countries had fallen prey to China’s manipulation. Well, most of them except for a few others. South Africa was one of them. He was the most famous of the African continent and knew exactly why. Though, he hardly spoke and had a rather formal nature to him, possibly because of the British influence on his country. “Greetings, South Africa!” Egypt said proudly, taking a formal bow to the man. “I’m sure you have heard of recent news involving our dear neighbors in the Middle East; Pakistan if I may specify.” South Africa looked up from his work. “Let me guess: China’s taken control again and is causing tension within Southeast Asia and the rest of the world?” He asked in a formal tone. “Good guess! A correct one indeed, Sir!” Egypt replied happily. “Well, I have come to inform you that the United Nations leaders have called you and Somalia to represent all of Africa. Of course, I envy you, but I do not wish to cause sabotage upon you nor our dear Somalian friend!” The two countries suddenly heard a car rolling up in the driveway. Somalia’s car. “Ah! Speaking of our Somalian buddy!” Egypt said with a bright smile, going to the door and letting Somalia in with a bow. “Greetings, Somalia, sir!” Egypt said proudly. Somalia just nodded and went to South Africa. “Hey. I’m sure our messenger here told you about the recent news and the calling of our presence for the representation of the entire continent, right?” Somalia said formally. South Africa nodded. “How will we represent 54 total countries on a supercontinent, though? All of them have different opinions, different claims, and even different ideologies,” he said. Somalia sighed. “I’m not sure,” he replied quietly. “We could ask all of them about the current situation and see which decision has the most. In that case, then we go with that.” South Africa got a pen, paper, and a clipboard. He quickly put the piece of paper on the clipboard and held his pen in his hand. “That’s the best option we have,” he said. “Egypt!” The South African said firmly. Egypt looked up from getting the mail. “Get one of the cars. One of the business ones. I’m sure you know which airport to take us to by now,” South Africa commanded. Egypt nodded, swiftly going out to the garage with a pair of car keys. After a few more minutes, the car that was perfect to arrive at the airport was in their driveway with South Africa and Somalia entering. Now, they had a long drive ahead of them to the nearest airport. A long, quiet drive with nothing but their thoughts.
Cape Town International Airport; 6:24 P.M.
The two countries were now waiting for their flight to Manhattan, New York, so they could attend the United Nations meeting they never thought would happen in their own lifetimes. “I can’t believe what’s going on… First, China’s manipulating everyone, now he’s causing nothing but tensions throughout the world? Soon enough, we’re gonna be hearing about Russia and North Korea’s relations strengthening into a global superpower relations rank,” Somalia said, looking at the news articles on his phone. “Yeah… It’s getting much, much worse ever since China’s population reached one billion,” South Africa replied. “And that’s mere because of the taxes in his own country. They’re high, and they’re giving him nothing but money to him and his government, yet he claims he cannot feed his own children nor his own brother. He also claims that the Hong Kong protests aren’t happening, even though protestors within his daughter’s own country have been getting beaten and arrested by Chinese police officers who work for China.” Somalia knew how serious the situation was getting, and what it could mean for the future of the world. Especially Africa. Most of the countries had some sort of trading route with China, but Somalia never knew if South Africa himself had ties with the communist. The PA System announced that their flight was boarding and the two stood up with their carry-on bags. “You got first class, right? I don’t want to be sitting next to a crying baby the entire flight,” Somalia said to his friend. “Of course I got first class. Who do you think I am, Central African Republic?” South Africa retorted, looking at Somalia. Somalia chuckled. “No, of course not. Besides, being rich is better than being poor. We can laugh in the faces of those poor imbeciles and watch their countries collapse into chaos, war, and even protests. Like Europe’s current condition,” the Somalian said, a proud grin on his face. South Africa fell silent as he boarded onto the plane. Sure, he was rich and kind of a snob, but that doesn’t mean he was rude and arrogant like many people thought he was. He always offered his help to the other countries of Africa, and even on other continents like Oceania and North America (even though North America didn’t really need his help anymore. Well, Mexico does but he prefers not to speak of it.) After they got situated on the flight, they were offered food and drinks, which the two politely declined for the first half of the flight. Oh, how they regretted it later. As they were flying over the Indian Ocean, they felt an unusual amount of turbulence. It caused people's carry-on bags to fall out of their compartments and spill all over the floor. “What’s happening?” Somalia asked nervously, looking at South Africa. “We have to jump out of this plane. It’s going down,” South Africa replied, only loud enough for Somalia to hear. Somalia was shocked as most people would be, but he nodded in agreement not a moment later, grabbing out the life jackets and raft from his carry-on bag. “I keep these on me at all times. I always come prepared,” Somalia said when South Africa looked at him weirdly. South Africa just nodded and they went to the back of the plane, opening the cargo door as some cargo fell into the Indian Ocean. “Push the life raft into the water after you get your life jacket on!” Somalia shouted over the roaring plane engines next to him and South Africa. They felt a jolt and the life raft suddenly fell out with Somalia still in it. “Somalia! Are you okay?” South Africa asked from the cargo door. “Yeah! I think,” Somalia replied. “Jump down! The boat’s drifting away too quickly for me to try and stop it with the ore!” Somalia then shouted up. South Africa took a running start and jumped into the life raft, landing on the boat safely. “Thank the Gods,” Somalia muttered. “You alright?” He then asked South Africa. “Yeah. I’m fine. What should we do now?”
“We wait until we see land. It’ll be a long, long drift to New York’s coast.”
“Okay. I understand.”
The two countries started their long journey to the United States coastal line. It would be a long, cold road ahead of them. But they had each other. For now.
Mexico City, Mexico; December 16th, 2019
Christmas was always hectic for Mexico. Of course, so was Mexico City, but that was normal for his capital. He had just gotten out of the local cafe shop when he was called by America. “Hola?” Mexico said as he answered. “USA, why are you calling me? Aren’t you busy with the current situation between you and OPEC?” America sighed. “I was, but then South Africa and Somalia washed up on New York’s shore. Now I have to take care of their injuries,” he replied.
“Let me guess; you called me so I could go over and take care of them while you deal with a possible third World War on your hands?”
“Yeah! That would be great! Could you come over right now if that’s possible?”
Mexico was a little concerned. He still had to finish wrapping gifts for his kids, and if he stopped, they could find them and it would no longer be a surprise. “USA, it’s almost Christmas! I cannot take care of them while I still have a family to care about!” Mexico said, clearly upset.
“Fine, fine, fine. When you’re done wrapping gifts, get over here. Or else I’m telling Argentina of what happened with you and Brazil,” America replied as he hung up. Mexico immediately knew he couldn’t let Argentina know how he actually broke his arm back in September. He quickly drove up to America’s border and got in, meeting America there.
“Wrapping gifts didn’t really seem that important after all, huh?”
“Oh shut it, you American idiot.”
Long Island, New York; 11:23 A.M.
“So what exactly happened? Do either of you remember anything?” Canada asked the two African countries. “I remember hearing that the plane was coming down, jumping out of the cargo door, and landing in this life raft,” Somalia replied. “Canadá, just give up already,” Mexico said, looking at the Canadian. “Somalia is the only one that can still be considered alive, whilst South Africa could die at any moment if we don’t get a blood transfusion in the next hour.” Canada just sighed, pulling a chair from the dining room table and sitting down, staring at the ground. “USA, you should call Switzerland. He’s the only doctor around for miles,” Greenland chimed in, looking at America. The American shrugged. “Does it look like I would have the number for that Swiss?” America said firmly.
“Well, isn’t he one of your closest allies, like that Italian?”
“What did you just say about Italy?!”
Canada grabbed America and made him sit down. “I know I have Switzerland’s number, so let me call him.” He then turned to America. “Don’t attack Greenland unless you wanna get on Denmark’s bad side. You know fully well how he can get if you attack his territory that is already beginning to melt because of your pollution.” He swiftly left the room, his snow boots clicking on the hallway floor as he dialed Switzerland’s number. “Hey, Switz? You got a moment or two?” The Canadian asked.
“Yes, why? Did America run out of medication?” Switzerland asked.
“No, no. America is fine. He’s been taking his BPD meds. It’s about South Africa. We found him and Somalia stranded on Long Island’s beach after New York called us, demanding we rush over there immediately.”
There was a moment of hesitation before Switzerland answered. “I’ll be right there,” he then said with a sigh. He then hung up.
Canada walked back out of the other room. “Switzerland is on his way. We can also assume that Austria might be brought over as well,” he said to the others. America visibly flinched at the mention of Austria, for Austria had been the person to approve of the oil heist. “I know you don’t want him to come, but I still want so save South Africa. He doesn’t deserve to die because of him trying to escape a crashing plane,” Canada then said. He then heard knocking and let Switzerland inside. “He’s upstairs in the guest room. Somalia is fine,” Mexico said to Switzerland, looking at him. Switzerland nodded, and Austria soon followed him upstairs. The Austrian felt America’s eyes on him the whole way. He was honestly nervous to be in the same house as someone whom he had tried to steal from. Now, they had to deal with not just the crisis, but two African countries found injured on American soil. That added more tension, and now European countries were beginning to get involved.

How Talk Therapy Helped Me Conquered My Depression.
“Baji I feel that it is so sad that people have no one to talk to and they pay you to listen to them.”
These words caused me to feel uneasy. Last night while talking to my only, beloved sibling who happens to be a medical doctor and endorses mental health but dismissed therapy as something that produces no result but an outlet to express oneself. I understand that being a doctor she believes in medication more than in therapy because what can talking to a psychotherapist for 50 minutes do for you?
The year was 2003, I was living in Karachi and was suffering both from anxiety and depression. I was taking a concoction of anti-depressants and I thought they were working really well. To me at that time everything was under control. I didn’t have suicidal thoughts and was working hard; really hard in the country’s most prestigious business school. After my last unsuccessful attempt, my husband was too attentive and always available. I thought I would be fine as long as I take my medications. Antidepressant were the best thing I did for my mental health and then something happened and I was struck by the realization that no drugs are not the answer for my problems regarding mental wellness.
I received a call from my uncle that my mother and sister had been missing, they inquired if I have any idea about their whereabouts.
My only sister and mother were missing!? Nobody was at home. No one was picking up the landline and the cell phones were off. My uncle asked if I can think of any place or anyone that they could have gone, and if till evening they did not get any clue he would report the matter to the police and I felt nothing. Nothing at all. Not a worry that where could be my sister and mother be? They are not adventurous people. We do not have family in other cities beside Lahore and Karachi and if they had come to Karachi I should have known but I was indifferent. I am here in Karachi what can I do? Do I even need to do something? My husband was worried, everyone, my uncles and my cousins everyone was worried and I was “Ha Kia ho gia , Chali gai tu chali gai”. Even if they are kidnapped, then what? Let the police find them. After all, that is their job. I didn’t feel anything. They came back and I was “agai , Acha, Ok”
And then after one month later when my cousin asked me why I didn’t feel worry or fear for their safety, Or relief or happiness upon them being found I realized, I was just not feeling any emotions and these antidepressant that I thought are magical pills had numbed me towards emotions. I was not feeling sad or depressed true, I was not feeling anything period. No negative emotions nor positive emotions.
I was not cured of my depression I was actually adapted to my disease. I had lost the ability of feeling any emotion, I had lost the capacity to destroy but at the same time I have the capacity to create. Restoring relationships and family is central to restoring well-being; and I was not feeling that at all. I realized that because I was not talking, I was not aware of what was happening to me or people who are very important to me. Language gives us the power to change ourselves and others by communicating our experiences, helping us to define what we know, and finding a common sense or meaning; we have the ability to regulate our own physiology, including some of the so-called involuntary functions of the body and brain, through such basic activities as breathing, moving, and touching; and we can change social conditions to create environments in which children and adults can feel safe and where they can thrive. When we ignore these quintessential dimensions of humanity, we deprive people of ways to heal from trauma and restore their autonomy.
Being a patient, rather than a participant in one’s healing process, separates suffering people from their community and alienates them from an inner sense of self. I was depressed and grieving the death of my father, and struggling with displacement anxiety but due to the limitations of drugs, I was not concerned about what was happening around me and attracting more trauma. I started to wonder if I could find more natural ways to help myself deal with my post-traumatic stress than just filling myself with chemicals.
The triumph that I felt was short lived, I had lost the sense of wellbeing. The drug that started out with so much promise has actually ended having done as more harm than good. The theory that mental illness is caused primarily by chemical imbalances in the brain that can be corrected by specific drugs which has become broadly accepted, by the media and the public as well as by the medical profession. I thought this is not right and then I tried to seek therapy I was suppressing my problems I was escaping without addressing the underlying issues. Antidepressants can make all the difference in the world in helping with day-to-day functioning, and if it comes to a choice between taking a sleeping pill and drinking yourself into a stupor every night to get a few hours of sleep, there is no question which is preferable. For people who are exhausted from trying to make it on their own through yoga classes, workout routines, or simply toughing it out, medications often can bring life-saving relief. The SSRIs can be very helpful in making traumatized people less enslaved by their emotions, but they should only be considered adjuncts in their overall treatment. Like in my case my routine life was a just fine but when something so traumatizing had happened I was not able to feel it taking care finding solution fixing in a farfetched situation.
Consider the case of antidepressants. If they were indeed as effective as we have been led to believe, depression should by now have become a minor issue in our society. Instead, even as antidepressant use continues to increase, it has not made a dent in complains about people suffering and going to hospital for depression. The number of people treated for depression has tripled over the past two decades. The new generation of antipsychotics, are the top-selling drugs in Pakistan. You can get them over the counter, but nobody is holding anyone accountable. These medications often are used to make abused and neglected people more tractable, manageable and less aggressive, these people are at risk of becoming morbidly obese and developing diabetes.
Mainstream medicine is firmly committed to a better life through chemistry, and the fact that we can actually change our own physiology and inner equilibrium by means other than drugs is rarely considered. This lack of awareness for therapeutic measures is an issue in modern society and must be addressed.

Ms. Marvel #24 Review
spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers
G. Willow Wilson, guest artist, Diego Olortegu, and colorist, Ian Herring, finish up this (somewhat) light-hearted mini-arc illustrating just how badly poor Kamala could use a break in the action. Brief recap and review following the jump.
In the previous issue, Kamala was surprised to discover that her family friend, Kareem, had come to Jersey City for a semester abroad. Kamala had met Kareem when she spent a summer vacation in Pakistan... an eventful trip that saw Ms. Marvel teaming up with the hero of Karachi, the dashing Laal Khanjeer (or Red Dagger). Obvs Kareem and this Red Dagger are one and the same, but it would appear that neither Kamala nor Kareem have put together the other’s secret identity. A matter made even more incredulous when the Red Dagger showed up in Jersey City shortly after Kareem’s arrival.
Secret identities aside, Ms. Marvel and The Red Dagger are forced to team up in an effort to stop a slow-speed runaway train. Acting in concert, the two were able to prevent a number of catastrophes but have yet to actually get the train to stop. All manner of hi jinx ensues and the two heroes continue to do their best to keep the train and its passengers safe. This involves Ms. Marvel pulling off some rather incredible (and implausible) feats… all of which leaves The Red Dagger all but babbling in amazement.
Ms. Marvel’s impressive skills abilities notwithstanding, The Red Dagger can tell that something is different in her. She doesn’t seem to have that same zeal as when he first encountered back in Karachi; something has changed. Whist continuing to protect the runaway train, the two heroes further their discussion and Ms. Marvel talks about how run down she has been feeling of late. The events of the last few months have been pretty hard on her. The battle against Doc. X and Jersey City being temporarily taken over by the bigoted, xenophobic Worthy Administration have taken quite a tole on her… further compounded by still missing her best friend, Bruno, and discovering her other childhood pal, Josh, had become the super villain, Discord. Ms. Marvel has prevailed, yet it has all left her feeling tired and disheartened.
The bloom is off the rose, so to speak… Kamala had very much enjoyed being the new hero on the block and everyone’s darling. But such a thing can only last so long and it’s been a hard landing as Kamala has had to contend with there being people out there who just don’t like her. It’s proven quite taxing and The Red Dagger can tell Ms. Marvel has lost some of the skip in her step from when her first met her back in Pakistan.
The Red Dagger suggests that perhaps Ms. Marvel might take a break; take some time for herself, recharge her batteries and possibly regain a greater sense of purpose. Ms. Marvel expresses reluctance toward such a prospect because Jersey City needs her. Who would look after her town were she too take such a break? Red Dagger counters that she basically won’t be doing Jersey City any favors by burning herself out. There will be others to pick up the slack were she to take time for herself. Ms. Marvel has a lot of friends; she just needs to rely on these friends and know they will be there for their town were she to take a much needed break.
This whole back-and-forth goes down as the two continue to keep the train safe and attempt to come up with some means of getting this runaway train stopped. They finally come up with a plan, a bizarre, physics-defying plan and the day is ultimately saved.
And yet Kamala’s sense of being unappreciated and needing a break is further hammered home when the press arrives and seems much more interested in her dashing new partner and his fantastic hair.
Ms. Marvel walks off knowing that it is indeed time for a break… that she needs time to reflect, adjust and regain the sense of purpose that led to her to become a super hero in the first place.
This was a pretty fun mini-arc. A touch light on plot, with he slow-speed runaway train being a bit of an on-the-nose metaphor for Kamala feeling like her life has gone off the rails. In a different story, Ms. Marvel would have likely been able to ascertain a means of stopping the train within a page, page and a half tops, but prolonging the ordeal offered up a nice venue for Kamala to openly struggle with all the matters that have her feeling so down.
The hard time Kamala has had in contending with the mere fact that there are people out who just don’t like her reminds me a lot of the early tales from Lee and Ditko’s seminal run on The Amazing Spider-Man. Spider’s angst over the Daily Bugles’ campaign against him acted as a great metaphor for the kind of alienation anxiety that many teenagers have to cope with. This is similarly the case with Kamala, although with a significantly different edge to it.
Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man have a lot in common, but there are also some very important differences. Not the least of which are the facts that Kamala is a girl, she is a person of color, and she is a Muslim. She’s a Muslim living in America during a time in which our elected officials have been openly hostile and condemning of the entire religion as a whole.
Wilson and company have danced around this issue for a while now, creating a number of thinly veiled stand-ins... yet there can be no doubt that these real-life matters are certainly impacting the stories and themes Ms. Wilson has been creating for Ms. Marvel.
After the intense emotional weight of the Doc.X and Mecca story-arcs, I was hoping that this mini-arc might prove a lighter affair; a respite from these pressing matters. And while the arc was indeed lighter in tone, the over-arching theme is something that really cannot be avoided. It’s the kind of thing that always manages to seep in. For far too many people out there, the specters of racism, sexism and religious intolerance are just unavoidable things… there is no respite. And it stands to reason that this should be true for Kamala as well.
And I think it is smart of Wilson and company not to name these matters for what they actually are. Overtly, Kamala is struggling with the simple fact that there are people out there who just don’t like her - leaving the ‘why’ they don’t like her kind of nebulous. In the Marvel Universe, she may be disliked for being an Inhuman, for being a super-powered being, for just being different. Yet the covert reasons are plainly evident for anyone to see. And it all offers a sense of commiseration for anyone dealing with similar matters while not alienating any who are not. It’s all a rather thorny matter, but one Wilson navigates it with deft precision… all the while adding in some great moments of levity to vent the tension. (My favorite of which was Kamala’s bemusement over an unflattering photograph.)
Diego Olortegu does fine work illustrating the issue. He is very talented, but I still feel not quite the right fit for this comic; and I’m very much looking forward to Takeshi Miyazawa return next issue. Olortegu is given a tough assignment in being asked to illustrate the New Jersey landscape in a fashion that mirrors Kamala’s feelings… being a place that is both magical but also run down. He does great work, but again I miss all the fun little details that Alphona, Miyazawa, and Leon would add into the illustration. Still, this is all just a matter of individual tastes and, as always, Ian Herring’s colors do a fantastic job of maintaining the visual continuity and making this feel very much a Ms. Marvel comic.
Recommended. Three out of Five Lockjaws.

Have you read The Metropolitan Man? I don't know what's your policy on fanfiction but it's a "realistic" take on Superman arriving in the 30s.
Haven’t read that one - looking over it briefly it seems pretty damn depressing, though I suppose that’s kind of the point. I’ll probably check it out sometime.
I’m definitely down for fanfiction, but there’s precious little with Superman I’m into - when I occasionally think of Superman fanfic I hope “cool, maybe there’s finally some cool cosmic adventure stuff in here given the comics so rarely go there, or some really insightful character observations of the kind writers too sparsely touch on!” and then it ends up being 7000 pages on a powerless high-school aged Clark’s torrid affair with Jason Todd behind Congorilla’s back or something. But keeping my eyes open, there’ve definitely been some over the years that worked for me:
* Superboy: A great little moment of growth for a young Clark Kent in a short animated comic by @jordangibson.
* All In A Day’s Work: Good chance you saw this floating around on Tumblr awhile back, this is another really great little short comic by Tom Gimlin and Marcellis Wentz, on the weight of the job.
* Superman’s Story: Opposite Number: An excellent short piece by @spectralspices based on an idea he was nice enough to bounce off me, as Superman goes up against a pair of challenges unusual even for him - one comedic, one very much not.
* Pop-Drama: Superman: I don’t know how much this really qualifies as fanfic in the traditional sense - it’s a broad story proposal by @andrewhickeywriter on an ‘end point’ for Superman - but it’s damn fun and satisfying. There’s also a follow-up article where he elaborates on a major plot point.
* Superman Lives: Another short comic, this time by Joe Otis Costello and Des Taylor, where the Superman of 1938 is beamed in a fight with Brainiac into the world of 2014, and Lois Lane naturally gets the exclusive interview with the returned hero, the story being presented in magazine format. The characterizations may or may not work for you - parts do for me, others not - but it’s an interesting exercise nonetheless, and Des Taylor’s work is absolutely gorgeous.
* @ck1blogs: Clark Kent’s reasonably infamous Twitter account. He is not good at the internet, or humans.
* @filmcriticsuperman: Less well-known than its cousin ck1, which is a shame; unlike most “Film Critic X” feeds, it’s actually…well, really good, courtesy of @charlotteofoz. It maintains the voice throughout and perfectly, and while half the feed is indeed movie reviews - always through the filter of Superman - the other half is just Superman talking about his day, and while it was coming out it was probably the best ongoing Superman material of the last several years. If starting at the beginning of the feed to get a feel for it seems too ominous, worth it though it may be, a good sample would be the more traditional short story she did connected to it, a Superman Halloween spooktacular by the name of Yellowfire.
* Kosmograd Blues: A short story by The Quantum Thief and Invisible Planets author Hannu Rajaniemi focused on a Russian Superman analog, it’s a beautifully written, somber story of a superman who’s long since lost what made his own life worthwhile, but knows he still has a job to do. This was to be one part of a series of superhero short stories set in a larger world he had built - he wrote a little more about the details of it once - but to my knowledge this was all that ever came out of it.
* Kahlil: An ongoing webcomic by Kumail Rizvi in which the last son of Krypton landed in Karachi; it’s been awhile since I last checked in on it, but I recall it being very good, with some spectacular artwork making the few moments thus far of super-ness really pop.
* Superman vs. The Universe: A spiritual cousin to Joe Keatinge’s Strange Visitor, this is the story of an all-powerful Superman at the end of time looking back on his existence as he prepares for his last duty; the prose is stilted in places, but there are enough great ideas and emotional moments in here to make it more than worth your time.
* Repairing The World: I’ll admit some bias up front since the author’s a friend of mine, but starlightify’s DCU series of fanfics - largely centered around Superman and Batman - are a lot of fun, very funny and heartfelt. Some good samplers with Superman would be Salutation and Canidae.
* Silver Age Superman: I’ve never gotten my hands on this semi-legendary bootleg 1990 comic by Ed Pinsent and Mark Robinson, but the likes of Al Ewing and phenomenal comics critic Colin Smith have both declared this comic - starring by my understanding perhaps the most alienated version of its title character ever - among their absolute favorite Superman stories, and their word is more than good enough for me; if you see it out in the wild, I’d absolutely say pick it up. And grab a copy for me, would ya?
* Luthor’s Gift/Starwinds Howl: Bizarre as it is to list any Superman work of Elliot S! Maggin’s as fanfiction when he’s one of the characters’ most beloved writers, I suppose that is what these two stories count as given that they’ve only ever been published online and maybe in a fanzine or two to my knowledge rather than with DC’s official sanction, and they’re absolutely of a piece with his novels Last Son of Krypton and Miracle Monday. The latter is his take on how Krypto arrived on Earth; the former shows how Superman finally left Earth around the end of the 21st century the way he often hinted at in his other works.
* Tales of Smallville: Near as I can tell, I’m the only person on the face of the Earth - other than maybe Elliot Maggin, who endorsed these stories himself - who’s aware that on the site supermanthrutheages, Samuel Hawkins posted a series of 4 Superboy stories; him revealing himself to the world, his first big adventure with the Legion of Superheroes, a memorable dinner with a guest, and Martha Kent on her deathbed. On these stories, I know two things. 1. Posterity will unquestionably not validate him. It’s a handful of Silver/Bronze-Age Superboy fanfics on an out-of-the-way fansite, no one will remember them. And 2. He is a Morrison/Ennis/Maggin-tier Superman writer. If I have ever written anything in my life on Superman that you’ve agreed on, for the love of god at least read Martha’s Story, it might honestly be my favorite Superman story other than All-Star.
So along with those recommendations, I do have to throw a request on top: I vaguely recall having once read a short story somewhere online years ago about a Superman-type hero found in a field as an infant by farmers - one’s an alcoholic and one sleeps around, but they clean up their acts for the sake of the kid. He grows up to become a superhero and occasionally fights a Lex Luthorish scientist with an appropriately alliterative name who accuses him of impeding societal progress. Eventually, the hero flies off into space once everyone he knows dies, returning occasionally to Earth as he feels drawn back, to defend it, or rule it, or just wander it in obscurity; his longest and last stay is when he falls in love with a woman who he meets at a restaurant, when she’s the first in all those thousands of years to make apple pie as good as his mother’s. Eventually, he lives to the end of the universe, where he finds himself rocketing back through time and de-aging, crash-landing in a field and completing the time-loop. If anyone could point me in a direction towards it, it’d be very much appreciated; I don’t even recall if it’s any good, but I’ve been trying to find it for years and it’s the principle of the thing at this point.

Wow - nice job spotting these @gosherlocked! Yes; there’s indeed a series of parallells - or recurring themes - between these episodes, especially if we think of possible metaphors. But I think some recurring themes also involve other episodes; from HLV and onwards there’s actually an increasing amount of recurring themes in this show. I also like @arwamachine’s observation that Irene, Mary and Eurus actually seem to work together in TLD. As for @loveismyrevolution’s question about what the parallells might mean, I think (speculating here) this could at least be one of the possibilities:
We’re always in Sherlock’s mind, which is working with metaphors on these issues; he’s subconsciously interpreting ’real’ people, things and events to have the emotional meanings that his rational, logical mind consciously always rejects. Irene represents - broadly speaking - the awakening of his libido. Mary represents (among other things) his and John’s internalised heteronormativity, which is blocking the option for them to be together. Eurus represents the hidden and repressed memories of Sherlock’s very emotionally loaded childhood; some traumas he’s had and the causes of them. In this sense, Eurus is the missing data on the device that Sherlock has been handling since TGG, but never actually looked at: the memory stick that pops up also in HLV and TST. Adding to this the compromising information on Irene’s camera phone (=heart) in ASiB, which Sherlock hands over to Mycroft (=brain) without looking at it, we do seem to have a pattern.
From the beginning of the show, Sherlock is always subconsciously processing certain ’real’ things as metaphors in his mind. For example, Irene and Mary do exist in the show’s reality, since they’re both confirmed by John’s blog (while Magnussen and Eurus are not). But some of the scenes with them seem exaggerated (for example Sherlock suddenly being in Karachi saving Irene in ASiB, or Mary hacking John’s blog editor in TEH, to read something that appears written by someone else).
But I also think he enters some sort of drug-induced coma shortly after John’s wedding. From this moment, Sherlock no longer has contact with the outside world, but his brain keeps on processing, now with more and more absurd scenarios. Which in this case would mean that the recurring themes in HLV and TFP referenced above by @gosherlocked and @loveismyrevolution are Sherlock’s new scenario iterations of people, things and events that actually happened to him in the first part of the show (up until TSoT).
Other recurring themes in HLV are, for example:
The CAM skyscraper, which Mary in her ninja gear must have climbed singlehandedly before shooting Sherlock, very much resembles the bank skyscraper in TBB, which Zhi-Zhu the Chinese acrobat climbed to leave a message to Eddie Van Coon, whome he later murdered.
Anderson - together with some other ’fans’ from The Empty Hearse club - is searching 221B for drugs in HLV, which is suspisciously similar to Lestrade’s and New Scotland Yard’s ’drug bust’ of 221B in ASiP. In both cases they find nothing.
John ’beating up a junkie’ in HLV is reminding us of John beating up Sherlock in TEH. In TLD these two events are combined into John beating up a drugged Sherlock, and the amount of violence increases. As a bonus, the drug den in HLV where John climbs some stairs looking for Isaac Whitney but also finding Sherlock, resembles Sherlock’s mind palace later in the episode, which is based both upon the crime scene at Larriston Gardens and Roland Kerr’s college of further education in ASiP. His first crime case together with John. In the drug den, there’s even a heart incrusted in the railings of the stairs. ;)
@ebaeschnbliah @sarahthecoat @raggedyblue @thepersianslipper @devoursjohnlock @the-signs-of-two @spenglernot @sagestreet @catwillowtree
Irene/Mary, or Nothing New Under The Sun
I rewatched ASIB the other day and realised that there is a strong parallel in HLV. Look at this.
In both episodes Sherlock and John enter a suspect’s house/penthouse under a pretext (injured clergyman/prospective fiancé).
In both cases Sherlock wants to obtain important blackmailing material from Irene/Magnussen for the Royal Family/Lady Smallwood.
Both times, the suspect’s PAs Kate/Janine have been knocked out and John looks after them.
Irene/Mary attack Sherlock while John is out of the room.
Sherlock experiences a hallucinated deduction/mind palace while being unconscious.
Both times Greg states that he filmed Sherlock on is phone while out cold.
Both Irene and Mary enter Sherlock’s room while he is being drugged/unconscious.
Now I keep thinking about the meaning behind this. Sherlock being attacked an injured by women is a recurring motive in the show, culminating in the Eurus story. I am just collecting thoughts, looking for a pattern.
Although there is no parallel like the above in TFP, there are some similarities between the Irene, Mary, and Eurus stories:
They all use drugs on him.
They all conduct a sort of power play.
And in the end Sherlock seems to forgive all three of them.
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Day 22, Wednesday July 24, 2019
The day before, on my way from Washington D.C. to New York City, I caught up on my journal - posts that had been pending. When I reached New York, I felt a sense of peace, as I walked out of the station, the chaos gave me a strange sense of calmness - it felt like home. I took the day to relax unwind and catch up on my sleep, walked around briefly but the day was slow, I spent it reflecting, as I moved passed crowds - wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
I woke up the next morning and made my way to Long Island City, to visit Travis Tinney, director of development at ACE. The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (ACE) works with homeless men and women throughout New York City. It provided these individuals with job training, work experience, and a lifetime support network. Their main aim is to help these individuals achieve their goals and gain economic independence. I went through a brochure near the waiting area, as I waited for Travis, that gave me a fair background on the organization. I cannot begin to tell you how inspiring my meeting with Travis really was - we shared many notes, on the situation at both ends, in New York and in Karachi. I had so many question for him - I was truly intrigued at the success of the program as he had explained. Every city, every community, should have such programs, that help individual build themselves a better world - sometimes all it takes is ONE opportunity to change your life - to change a life. I am going to go to the graduation of these wonderful individuals that choose to change their life, with the help of ACE and hear their stories first hand - I cannot wait!
I had my last therapy session with Nancy, though I am glad I was getting a chance to thank her and say good bye. As I waited, I got there a little early, and skimmed through the pages of the books the lay in front of me - every page I opened was a conversation on its own - signs from the universe as I would call them. Though my meetings with Nancy were short, yet immensely detailed - I felt our conversation gave me a great deal of calmness and clarity. I am sincerely thankful for her direction not only personally but also professionally. I left her space with a exchange of small, which was so much more from her part, a book by Thich Nhat Hanh on mindfulness and details about the NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study. This which I thought, was definitely (hopefully) not the end to our many more conversations. Next stop was to fill Abbie, in on my week and to get the schedule for the next and final week. We walked over from Apexart, to a coffee shop in the vicinity - our now weekly ritual. I am always about filling Abbie in on what I was upto and how each scheduled activity went, considering she is the one who puts it together with so much love - and I ask her every time, if she has been where she is sending me on my next adventure (the answer is usually a negative - tsk Abbie, we must do something about that - hahaha!!)
I was meeting Elizabeth later in Brooklyn, she was to accompany me to volunteer at Books through Bars at Freebird Books & Goods. Again, I had done zero homework or read up on the activity, and I thought I would learn more when I got there (being in the moment - taking one thing at a time - as I had begun to call it - worked out great!). It was small space underground - a little curious library. It had shelves from right to left, top to bottom, all around, organised according to genre or subject. The process was fairly simple, we pulled out a letter from one of the prisoners, based on the letter, we put together the closest, if not the exact request, weighed it and packed it away, with stamps and details that were added to the package. It was the most humble experience, it was almost like we were assisting these prisoners to escape the walls that held them captive by giving them a whole world that they had asked for through these books that were donated and shelved in this little space. It was such a beautiful thought - that unfortunately had never crossed my mind. I
also need to mention that the clouds on this day were breathtaking!
Elizabeth and I walked down and found a place to sit down and chat some more. We talked about a lot of things, though we had not interated much during the course of my fellowship - strangely it felt like this was not our first meeting - it was oddly very comfortable (I would have to thank her for her simplicity and down to earth nature - I found it rather easy conversing as we sat and walked down the streets of Brooklyn). We also made a stop over at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (if I remember clearly), but I clearly remember the view - Manhattan lit in the distance - it was stunning.
This indeed was a great welcome back to New York City - the break was needed, for me to come back and appreciate what all it really had to offer.
