The $14 you are quoting (from me) is because it was the year that was used in the calculation that you quoted, but as I pointed out, that year was not the introduction of minimum wage, but a year where the value of minimum wage peaked (post legislation change) due to being around the same time as the midpoint of the Vietnam War (specifically the draft), which decreased the labor force quite a bit (27~ million), leading to a reduction in supply of young adults entering the labor force.

So now I must ask you, what should the minimum wage be? And why? As I already refuted both metrics you cited for calculating it.

I find it interesting you’re accusing me of red herring fallacies, when the original argument was that “if companies were paying employees the bare minimum, then why do most workers make over minimum wage?”, yet you’re choosing to argue about what the minimum wage should be.

Your 32% is based on the entire labor force; including part-time workers and the 1% in the Twitter post is on full-time workers. This is a problem because minimum wage legislation is designed and intended based on full-time workers. Furthermore, minimum wage legislation standards are designed based on hourly rates, whereas the study you are citing is based on annual individual income data. Now at a surface level this may seem irrelevant, but there is a vast difference between earning less than $15/hr and earning less than $31.2k/yr, which unfortunately is the false equivalency in assumption being made by the author. As there are many people who make over $15/hr, yet less than $31.2k/yr, due to limited hours being worked during the year (i.e. part-time). Lastly, the primary data source being used in the study comes from public data provided from the BLS/Census, which aggregates income data from the IRS. Now this may or may not surprise you, but it is far more common for individuals to understate their income than to overstate their income to the government. This issue is even alluded to in the methodology by the author: “reported total wages are more prone to error, introducing a degree of variation that may mask demographic trends in wage disparities.”
