April was a great reading month for me! I caught up on some series and read some books from my My 2018 Book Goals list, so 4 down and like 8 to go lol. I have a lot of new favorites, which is always exciting and makes me feel super accomplished.
Opal by Maggie Stievater my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
I’m still trying to figure out what relevance was for this novella, its only 38 pages of Opal wandering around the barn. I only got into the story at the end tbh.
Kings Cage by Victoria Aveyard my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
What a difference from Glass Sword this was, I was hooked throughout it, I was into everything that was going on. I am so pumped for War Storm now. Give it to me!
Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
5 out of 5 stars All of the stars! Characters? 5 out of 5 stars Plot? 5 out of 5 stars Romance? 5 out of 5 stars The beautiful writing? 5 out of 5 stars! Everything was beautiful and I want to cry because of pure happiness.
I cannot sing these praises loud enough.
Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Oh, my heart! I was so happy at some parts, I cried at other parts. Just a wonderful finale.
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
I am so conflicted about this, I was not a fan of how it started out, but the ending was pretty good. If I wasn’t listening to the audiobook for this, I don’t think I would have finished it.
The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this! It’s so fast paced, I read this in one sitting and it was just a fun yet dark witchy read. I also really love small town settings and this one was just everything I wanted.
Love, Hate, and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
I feel so conflicted about my rating for this! On one hand, I loved how this tackled the growing issue of Islamophobia and the very real threat that Muslims are facing, This is a #ownvoices novel and it is powerful. I rated it lower because it was also very fluffy in parts and the balancing of heavy vs fluff could have a little more even. I never want to see the word blush again, our MC spent a lot of time blushing.
Dear Martin by Nic Stone my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Love! This is also very powerful and if you enjoyed The Hate U Give, I urge you to pick this one up too, It made me cry so much, my heart broke for Justyce over and over. This also had amazing character growth and development for a lot of the characters.
Queens of Fennbrin by Kendare Blake my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
I loved reading the Oracle Queens story, it really highlighted how history is told through the eyes of the victors. I’m very excited to see if/how this is going to affect book 3. I didn’t really care for the triplets origin story though, it felt a little unnecessary as we had already heard most of their story, just the ending seemed to give some new info to the overall story.
City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
This was beautiful! The story was amazing and magical. I loved the world and the magic system so much. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Circe by Madeline Miller my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Circe really got the short end of the stick for everything. I felt so bad for the girl but I also loved her island so much and all of her domestic traits, I was so there for it, I honestly kept imaging myself as Circe.
You know you’re an introvert when being exiled to your own magical island that cleans itself and provides everything to you doesn’t seem like a punishment.
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Why did it take me so long to read this???? I feel in love almost instantly. I adore this world and I loved hearing about the university so much.
1984 by George Orwell my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This is another book that I feel a little conflicted over. I don’t really care for long droney monologue books which this kinda was, same with Brave New World and Picture of Dorian Gray, ugh I don’t even want to think about that one.
But 1984 was such an interesting story despite the delivery, it’s so quotable, that ending was intense and fantastic.
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
This was everything I loved about fantasy wrapped up into one. Badass Characters Awesome Magic System They traveled on hybrids of Lions and Snow Leopards! Its a West African inspired fantasy, like how fantastic is that? Such a refreshing and needed change from Medieval-European inspired fantasies. The worldbuilding was fantastic Character development for everyone was 10 outta 10.
Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Leah is bae. I have never related to another book character so much in my entire life. At first, I wasn’t sure about the romance but I quickly got on that ship.
Here are some of my favorite quotes since I don’t have the words to fully describe my love so I’ll just show you some of the quotes that made me fall in love.
“Imagine going about your day knowing someone’s carrying you in their mind. That has to be the best part of being in love- the feeling of having a home in some else’s brain.”
“And I’m the worst kind of Slytherin, I’m the kind who’s so stupidly in love with a Gryffindor, she can’t even function.”
“I swear, people can’t wrap their minds around the concept of a fat girl who doesn’t diet. Is it that hard to believe I might actually like my body?”
“if Katie Leung sweetly rejecting Daniel Radcliffe in a Scottish accent wasn’t your sexual awakening, I don’t even want to know you.”
Just some of my faves
now please go read it and come talk to me about it!
Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
I loved this so so much! I didn’t know what the story was going to be about really, I had just seen it described as Wonder Woman meets Vikings and I was sold. That was all I needed to know thank you very much. It was everything I wanted and the Wonder Woman meets Viking description is actually pretty accurate, the only downside is I think the ending was a bit rushed, it could have been flushed out a little more.
If I was Your Girl by Meredith Russo my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Another #ownvoices book that I highly recommend. This was heartwrenching, sweet, and had amazing female friendships. If you’re looking for a book with strong female friendships and empowerment
.check out this one!
Tumblr media
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Yay, I finally read another Jane Austen book! I really enjoyed the beginning and the end of this, I was a little bored throughout the middle though. I’m not sure what my next Austen book is going to be though, maybe Emma?
April Wrap Up April was a great reading month for me! I caught up on some series and read some books from my
