familiar solace - hoshi

wrote this a while back when i needed some comfort. if you're having a hard time and you read this, i hope this comforts you <3

i sighed, closing my eyes, resting my head on the side of the seat. i closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. If hoshi was here, he'd know exactly how to cheer me up. Just then I opened my eyes and there he was, standing in front of me, with a smile on his face. I was actually confused if I was dreaming but his "are you okay?", snapped me back to reality. looking forward to seeing him :(

"oh..hi", i told, surprised to see him since he said he couldn't make it tonight. he studied my face and must have realized something was bothering me and his expression softened immediately and he sat down next to me, facing me, taking my hand in his.

"are you okay?", he asked worried, pouting.

i didn't know how to answer this. was i okay? i sighed.

"i don't know. iI just had a really bad day and i'm really tired", i told softly, not meeting his eye.

"how come you're here? i thought you said you couldn't come?", i asked, confused.

"oh, i wanted to surprise you!", he told a little brightly and i gave him a small but tired smile.

"you haven't had dinner yet right, let's go. i'm sure some good food in your tummy will make you feel better", he said getting up, putting his hand out for me, which i took gladly and we both walked to a nearby restaurant, which hoshi said was supposed to be good.

hoshi held my hand as we walked and it was a sort of a familiar comfort i had missed. we reached the restaurant and we ordered. we were in the corner booth of the restaurant, hoshi opposite me. h asked me how my project was going - the reason why i had to work late this week and also the reason why i had a bad day today.

our food finally came and i served little on my plate. i picked up my fork and played with the food a bit, my appetite was suddenly gone. i forced myself to at least take small bites since Ii didn't want hoshi to worry. as we ate, i let hoshi do most of the talking as he had a lot to fill me up on, but somewhere my attention wasn't on what he was saying. he must have noticed this.

"babe? are you okay?", he asked me once again. "why aren't you eating, you don't like the food? should i order something else?", he added, concerned, putting his fork down.

"no, it's not that. i'm just not so hungry", i confessed and he immediately came over to sit next to me.

"what's wrong, you're worrying me", he asked again, his eyes holding worry and a slight sadness in them.

"just... i had a bad day plus staying late to work is something i don't like to do but i can't say no", i finally let out. he looked at me with understanding, nodding. he knew i couldn't stay up too late. but working late hours for the past week messed up my sleep schedule and made my body confused, so i ended making some stupid choices, like today morning.

"i kind of messed up something today and got a good scolding, it wasn't nice. it was just really humiliating", i added softly, my eyes slowly tearing up.

after putting up with all this stress and anxiety for the past week, it built up, and now as i was telling hoshi, letting everything out, i finally felt some sort of relief. a few tears rolled down my cheeks and he froze for a few seconds, not sure what to do. i don't really cry in front of people but today i just let go. a few more soft sobs escaped me and he quickly grabbed some tissues and handed them to me. he scooted closer to me and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me into his chest. i leaned into him, sniffling.

thank god we were in the corner so no one else would see me cry.

"hey, it's okay", he told gently, wiping my tears away with the sleeve of his shirt. i blew my nose, which was a runny mess, trying to look elegant but failing.

"gosh, i probably look ugly when i cry", i said, wiping my nose once again.

"no, you don’t", he said. "and the next time your struggling or having a hard time, tell me. don't deal with it alone. i'm always there for you", he told me, and his words warmed my heart. he kissed my temple and being in his embrace gave me some comfort.

he got his plate from the other side and placed it next to mine and continued to sit next to me and eat instead. now that i had vented everything to him, it left me so much better and my appetite somehow came back. i ate some more and he looked at me fondly as i ate, happy that I was feeling better now.

we finished eating and were walking back to the bus stop, where his car was parked. just as we were nearing the car, he told me to wait by the car and that he would be back. he ran off before i could ask him where he was going. i made my way back to the car and waited. he came back after two minutes, smiling, and stood in front of me.

"tada, he told, presenting me with a rose. i couldn't help but smile back.

"just wanted to surprise you with something", he told.

my heart swelled at this action. this made me feel better.

we drove back home and he dropped me at my doorstep. both of us lingered there, not wanting to leave or say goodbye yet.

"thank you for today", i told sincerely and he smiled.

"of course, and remember, i’m always here for you", he told once again. i took two steps forward, closing the gap between us, and engulfed him in a hug. he hugged me back immediately, his hands wrapping themselves around me. i pulled away, looking at him, still in his embrace.

so...how about a kiss now?", i asked sweetly.

he chuckled.

"how can i say no to that", he told cutely, leaning forward, kissing me. i kissed him back and his lips parted against mine. his hand went to my face, cupping my cheek as he deepened the kiss. my hands held onto the collar of his coat, slowly pulling him closer. he broke the kiss, and he looked so happy like he was a love drunk. i pecked his lips once again.

"if you continue this, you're gonna summon the tiger inside me", he told playfully. i giggled at this. and he proceeded to imitate the tiger by doing an adorable rawr followed by the tiger paws.

"goodnight my love", he said, planting a kiss on my cheek.

"you too", i replied.

he stole another kiss from me before walking back to the car, making a heart with his hand as he walked backward and giving me more air kisses. yup, he was definitely love drunk. i laughed as he grinned wide, making my heart full. my precious tiger <3

24 cakes pt.1 | oneshot

pairing: tsukishima kei x fem!reader

a/n: so this kind of turned into a oneshot but oh well. i also tried to make it so that you could technically read the two parts separately if you prefer fluff/smut over the other but idk how well that worked out. anyways, pt 2 has been scheduled to come out in 2 hours. n e ways TSUKISHIMA BEST BOY!! also this is a reupload bc my original post disappeared. if you already saw this NO U DIDN’T

the smell of smoke engulfs your apartment and you quickly run to slide open your balcony door. turning on your heels you make your way back to the kitchen. clambering atop the counter you try to wave the air clear with your palms. when the piercing sound of the smoke alarm finally cuts out, you plop down, letting your legs dangle over the edge of the counter.

your eyes land on the stovetop where your burnt creation sits. you let out a frustrated cry. you’ve made this recipe more times than you can count on your fingers because somehow they’ve all ended up in disaster. first, there was the time you underbeat the whipped cream, and ended up with a sticky mess. then there was the time you accidentally knocked the batter onto the floor. not to mention the time you dropped the cake right as you pulled it out of the oven.

this time you had gotten so wrapped up in your phone call with tsukishima you didn’t realize that your oven timer was going off. by the time you had come to your senses, it was too late.

you rub your temples in annoyance. despite starting weeks in advance to make sure you had the recipe down, it was now the day of your boyfriend’s birthday and you had yet to successfully finish the recipe even once.

taking a quick glance at the clock, you push yourself off the counter to throw away your burnt masterpiece and begin pulling out ingredients once more. tsukishima was supposed to be over in a few hours, so if you wanted to have enough time you had to start now.

you’re about to combine the dry ingredients together when there’s a brisk knock on the door. dusting your hands on your apron, you make your way to the front entrance. you swing your door open, and slam it shut just as fast. 

the knocking starts up again, this time more persistent and more aggressive. your fingers fumble with the door chain, sliding it into place before cracking the door open ever so slightly. you’re about to peek out into the hallway, but before you can get a good view, your visitor tries to force the door open further causing you to jump back in surprise.

“y/n? what the hell are you doing?” the person on the other side says, irritation evident in their voice. when you don’t respond they speak again, this time with a much softer tone, “y/n please let me in. are you okay?”

“mhm” is the only thing you manage to squeeze out though it sounds more like a squeak. gently pressing the door closed again, you remove the chain to let your visitor in. when your boyfriend comes into full view, you flash him a bashful smile, “sorry, kei. i was just caught off guard, i thought we agreed that you’d come over at 9pm.”

the tall male scoffs, raising his hand to give your forehead a flick, before perching forward to press an apologetic kiss against the red mark, “nii-chan got held up at work so he won’t be here until tomorrow.”

you try to pull off your best scowl, only to have him to snort at you, “so? are you going to let me in or are you going to keep making faces at me?” he cranes his neck to look past you, his height giving him a clear advantage.

reluctantly, you step aside and he lets himself in, removing his shoes and changing into his slippers in the process. as the two of you step into the kitchen, you avoid eye contact, already able to picture the smug expression on his face.

his arms slip around your waist, face nuzzling into the crook of your neck. despite the sweet actions, the nuance in his voice says otherwise, “aw y/n were you trying to bake me a birthday cake? you really shouldn’t have.”

you pull away from him, sticking out your tongue in response, “fine in that case i’m going to make this strawberry shortcake for myself.” you tap your chin pretending to deep in thought for a moment, “or maybe i’ll ask yamaguchi if he wants some.”

you expect a snarky remark but he says nothing, instead he strides over to one of the drawers to pull out an apron. you watch as he hooks the bib around his neck, and fastens the string around his waist.

he picks up the recipe by the corner, letting it dangle in the air. he shoots you a questioning look but you shrug your shoulders and snatch the paper out of his hands. “so i’ve already tried to bake this recipe a couple of times, it’s bound to have a couple of stains here and there.”

“how many times is a couple, really? three? ten? fifty?”

you mutter something under your breath, fingers fiddling with each other. tsukishima leans in closer, cupping his ear with his hand, “sorry, can you say that again?”

you roll your eyes, this time your voice at a normal volume, “twenty-three.”

this time tsukishima laughs with his whole chest, using his pointer finger to gently push your head, “twenty-three? i’m surprised you haven’t burned the entire place down.”

placing your hands on your hips, you challenge him, “what? you think you can do better?”

he shifts in his spot so that your eyes are level with his, “oh i know i can do better.”

with that, he snatches the recipe back from you, doing a careful readthrough of each step. you watch as he scoops a cup of flour, neatly levelling it with a metal spatula. just as he’s about to pour the flour into the bowl, you lunge forward, bumping your hip against his side. a white cloud rises into the air, coating the both of you in flour.

tsukishima grabs you by the wrists, clicking his tongue in annoyance “tsk, do you really hate losing that much?”

you feign innocence, flashing him your sweetest smile, “sorry, i lost my balance.”

unable to think of a comeback he releases you, turning his attention back to the task at hand. as works through each step, you shadow him, interjecting a few comments every so often.

wrapping your arms around his waist, you rest your face against the side of his body, “are you sure that’s soft peaks it’s looking a little runny still”

he tilts the bowl towards you, lifting the mixer up so you can see how the egg whites droop over slightly, “yes i’m sure.”

you take your chance again when he moves onto the next step, “be careful not to add the sugar too fast or-”

but to your dismay he’s already one step ahead of you,“then the stiff peaks won’t form, i know.”

in a last resort to try and distract him, you throw in one last punch, “are you really sure you want to fold your meringue in now? it’s looking a little soft still.” obviously fed up with your antics, tsukishima grabs the metal bowl, flipping it above your head.

instinctively, you duck your head down and cover your head with your hands. cracking an eye open, you’re met with his usual smirk. and so, you shuffle over to the other side of the counter situating yourself on one of the bar stools.

you watch silently as he works through the final steps with ease. once the cake is placed in the oven he turns his attention back to you.

his long frame leans over the kitchen counter and kisses the tip of your nose, “sorry, but it looks like this is just one more thing that i’m better than you at. although 24 cakes does seem appropriate for today’s occasion, huh?”

you huff, crossing your arms against your chest, “technically you’re not finished until the cake its cooked, iced, and decorated.” turning your head slightly you side eye him, “besides you may be better than me at some things. but you’re definitely not everything.”

a sly smile appears on tsukishima’s face, “oh yeah? i can think of plenty of things that i can beat you at right now.”

your palms hit the counter as your body shoots out of its seat, “oh yeah? let’s go then. right here, right now.”

your entire body quivers under your boyfriend. never have you wanted to scream at him so bad before. but you bite your tongue and hold yourself back for the time being. there was no way you were going to lose to him, not when you had so confidently declared that you were going to beat him.

“left hand yellow, y/n.”

you let out a triumphant yell as your hand is already planted on a yellow spot. but the feeling is short lived when you realize that you now have to maneuver yourself to reach the spinner. it’s obvious your boyfriend is thinking the same thing from the way he shoots you a smile.

but you refuse to lose, not when you’ve held out for this long. before your hand reaches the spinner, a blaring noise fills the room.

the two of you look at each other, and this time it’s you who shoots him a knowing smile. he glowers at you as he twists his body to stand up. once he stands up fully erect, your arms and legs give out, your body crumpling onto the floor.

as you lay there, a delicious scent fills your nostrils. automatically, you rise to your feet, skittering over to join your boyfriend by the oven. he takes notice of your presence, and defensively holds his arms out, “don’t you dare come anywhere near my cake. you might ruin it.”

your mouth hangs open, reaching out to give his chest a playful shove, “hey i’m good at baking. i just had a few…mishaps.” your voice trails off momentarily, “plus i just beat you at twister, so technically we’re tied for today!”

tsukishima clicks his tongue, obviously irritated at the fact that he most likely would have won if it weren’t for the timer going off.

“let’s play another round, loser has to wash all the dishes.” he extends his hand out to you.

grabbing his hand, you give it a firm shake, “you’re on! prepare to lose, kei.”

your grip loosens but before you can completely pull your hand away, you’re tugged against tsukishima’s body. in one swift motion his lips capture yours in a chaste kiss. after a moment, he pulls away slightly, letting your lips brush against each other as he speaks, “whatever you say, love. but just remember today is my birthday.”

Jin Guangyao’s Hoarding Problem, part 4

Jin Guangyao is having a really good week, and then suddenly he is having a really bad week.

This is mostly his father's fault. But he does feel that Madam Qin really could have chosen to share this information literally any time earlier in the courtship. Even if it was after Qin Su was pregnant, more time might have enabled him to come up with something! Even if she weren't pregnant calling off the wedding this late would be a significant scandal — what was Madam Qin thinking? Probably she wasn't thinking. No one around him ever thinks.

(He's not exactly thinking his clearest, either, but he doesn't realize that.)

He wants to get out of it. (The marriage still has its good points, if the secret can be guaranteed — but I don't think he would want a marriage which could only produce children who 'had to die'.)

(He could order Wen Qing to prepare an abortifacient, but then, he could in theory procure an abortifacient in any timeline. Honestly I wouldn't even be surprised if Madam Jin quietly keeps a stock on hand in case any of the household staff has a problem. And it seems like something Meng Yao ought to know about, doesn't it? But perhaps Meng Shi insisted he shouldn't pay attention to such filthy things, and he knows no more than most young gentlemen. Still, he could get his hands on one somehow — doing so discreetly is a challenge but not an insurmountable one. The trouble is that without Qin Su's forewarned cooperation, any termination of the pregnancy will be obviously a failed pregnancy, and marrying her is still the only honorable thing, but now with an added taint of sin for premarital sex and the shame of failing to cover it up, he can hear the remarks about his mother already.)

(He could have Qin Su non-fatally poisoned — enough to make her very sick and put off the wedding. But medical examination might reveal the pregnancy, and too long a delay definitely would.) (If he were willing to entertain the idea of telling Qin Su, this would be a good way to buy time to talk. There are so many more possibilities when she's not one of the people who has to be lied to.)

(He could have Qin Su fatally poisoned, and make sure no postmortem exam found the pregnancy, or at least that no one talked about it. But he doesn't have a scapegoat set up for a murder, and Madam Qin might suspect him.) (He also doesn't want to kill her, but that's not what deters him.)

(He could have Qin Su kidnapped, into the Dizang or elsewhere. But he doesn't have a scapegoat ready for that, either, and that still doesn't fix the pregnancy.)

(Now, if he could have her kidnapped, terminate the pregnancy, somehow alter her memory so she doesn't remember there ever was a pregnancy, somehow alter her memory so she doesn't remember the kidnapping, 'rescue' her, give the impression she's temporarily lost her wits from the experience and has probably also been ruined, well, the only compassionate thing is to cancel the wedding, cancel the engagement, send her home to her parents, terrible tragedy, maybe someday she can find happiness elsewhere. If he had a way to alter memories that quickly and precisely he might go with this despite the lack of prepared scapegoat.)

He decides the best option is to go through with the wedding and… deal with it later. Somehow.

(Highlights/"highlights" of the wedding celebrations include, but are not limited to:

It is Jiang Yanli's first major social event since her mourning period concluded. She spends most of her time trying to get Jiang Cheng to stay still long enough for her to talk to him. She's not mad at him!

Lan Xichen averts a disaster when he overhears and shuts down some speculation on whether Jiang Yanli will marry again — she'd have to come with a pretty hefty dowry, what with the health problems and so-so looks and rumored madness — before Jiang Wanyin hears any of it.

Nie Huaisang gets blackout drunk and throws up in the banquet hall, but not before laying the groundwork for five different problems with minor sects he can beg San-ge and Er-ge to help him with.

Su Minshan is totally unaware that Jin Guangyao's good week has become a terrible week and cries tears of joy at his benefactor's good fortune.

Sect Leader Yao gets tipsy and attempts to tell a bawdy story. It does not work very well.

Jin Ling is prevented from inviting himself to the banquet and throws a screaming tantrum not quite out of hearing.

Jin Guangshan comments on Qin Su's hips.

Jin Guangshan offers a minor Sect Leader's daughter jewelry to meet him in an inn in Lanling.

After both of the above incidents Madam Jin glares daggers at Jin Guangyao for some reason.

In fact Madam Jin glares daggers at Jin Guangyao the entire time.

Using the rebuilt Seal, Xue Yang sneaks into Jinlintai proper and steals an entire dessert course out of the kitchen.

On the plus side, he doesn't kill anyone and isn't spotted.

Congratulations!)

(Jiang Yanli eventually corners Jiang Cheng and tells him she isn't mad at him, and he's doing a wonderful job, and as soon as she can get the idea past the Jins she wants to take Jin Ling to Lotus Pier for at least a few months. Jiang Cheng is dubious about the first two assertions but can at least appreciate the third.)

Back in the Dizang it's been convenient that courtship and wedding preparations have occupied so much of Jin Guangyao's attention, because the preliminary results of the 'crying' research have been slightly more disruptive/strange than anticipated. It turns out that it is indeed possible to manually activate the tear glands of a fierce corpse, either by acupuncture needles or by talisman. After this, they will stream for four to six hours no matter what anyone does, which also gives them runny noses. After that, though, their eyes will water when they didn't before. When Wen Ning went through the procedure, he found that he could get tears triggered by emotions. He also discovered that crying gives him a dry mouth — the initial four-hour rain of tears gave him such a dry mouth he couldn't speak for a while.

This spun into everyone getting pulled into a study of 'how do fierce corpses regulate their moisture levels'. Water ghouls don't get waterlogged and fall to pieces. Fierce corpses in deserts don't desiccate and fall to pieces. They must regulate somehow. Missing moisture has to come from somewhere, and extra moisture has to go somewhere, and no one has ever looked into how before. It's disgusting. Xue Yang's never had so much non-homicidal fun in his life. (Well, a little homicidal, since he made the corpses, but not currently actively homicidal.)

Besides Xue Yang, all of this has been productive for Wen Qing and Wen Qing, Wei Wuxian is reluctantly fascinated, and Mo Xuanyu is non-reluctantly fascinated. He Zhi and He Jian are not having such a a good time, because all the fierce corpses besides Wen Ning are, you know, their relatives. Mo Xuanyu tries to help by suggesting Xue Yang can swap out the active experimental corpses with some that used to be whichever relatives they hated? There aren't any?! This leads to a discussion of Mo Xuanyu's maternal relatives. Xue Yang offers to kill them if the opportunity arises. Mo Xuanyu doesn't say no.

As soon as Jin Guangyao can get away for a day or two without anyone noticing — some nominal discreet inspection tour — he comes back to the Dizang and brushes off Mo Xuanyu's attempt to present his report on everything that's gone on while Jin Guangyao was busy with courtship and wedding (he doesn't want to think about courtships or weddings). He just goes and orders Wen Qing to invent a poison that can be administered either slowly or in parts, which will make the victim insane with lust and ultimately cause dramatic heart failure, preferably during sexual intercourse.

Wen Qing doesn't ask what his father did to finally push him over the edge, but it's a struggle. She does point out those are extremely specific requirements and she's not an herbalist. She will try if ordered to, but…

Hmmm. Yes. Good point. Perhaps what we want here is a curse. Yiling Laozu, design me a curse.

Wei Wuxian: What? I don't do curses, that was a false accusation—

Wei Wuxian's internal monologue: 'Mad with lust' curses exist, demons hit commoners with them all the time. I don't know the mechanics — well, I have a few ideas how it might work now that I think about it — I don't know how they work, though. A curse to kill someone the next time they have sex should be fairly straightforward, would be more straightforward if I'd gotten around to having sex, not bringing that up. No, I'm not bringing any of this up, I'm going to try to get out of helping Jin Guangyao murder someone. Even if it is probably his father, who deserves it. No. Besides, getting any of this to work on someone with high cultivation would be a challenge— PROBLEM! Would be a problem.

Jin Guangyao leaves him to think about that — for now — and goes down to the cell in the subbasement to (a) look at practically-a-puppet Nie Mingjue and feel smug about his own triumph and superiority, and (b) fantasize about using Nie Mingjue to kill Jin Guangshan.

He sends a message to Qin Su saying he's been injured, but please don't tell anyone, he doesn't want to show weakness. When he gets back, he claims the injury rendered him incapable of sex — but she can't tell anyone, she can't, he'll be ruined. Qin Su is dismayed, but vows she will keep the secret and considers him no less her husband for not being able to fulfill that duty. And at least they have the one child on the way! What a blessing.

Yes. A blessing.

(Qin Su keeps her word and doesn't tell anyone about the 'injury'. She does tell Jiang Yanli, in confidence, that her marriage isn't quite turning out as she expected it to.)

(Meanwhile Madam Jin has nothing against Qin Su personally, but is very determined that everyone remember Jin Guangyao's wife is not on the same level as other Madams Jin. Jiang Yanli does her best to mitigate it, but she still isn't taken as seriously as she should be. When it becomes known Qin Su is pregnant Madam Jin's attitude sours further.)

(Jiang Yanli is privately of the opinion that Qin Su is welcome to be preeminent Madam Jin; she just wants to go back to Yunmeng for good and have A-Ling adopted as a Jiang. Sadly that definitely won't happen unless Jin Guangshan and Madam Jin are both dead.) (Not that she'd be so unfilial as to hope for that.) (Much.)

(Madam Qin dies, somewhere in here. Jin Guangyao is nothing but relieved.) (Did he have something to do with it, besides causing distress by going ahead with the marriage? We may never know.)

Jin Guangyao introduces He Lei to Qin Su, although obviously not under that name. A-Lei is the mute half-wit sister of a loyal servant of his, he says; the man is often away on business so Jin Guangyao promised to find his sister safe and honorable employment — a touching story.

Qin Su promises to be kind to poor half-wit mute A-Lei, and is very patient with her inexperience as a lady's maid and shy nervousness.

Madam Jin not so much. Despite Qin Su's poor taste in husbands, she is still a gentlewoman and deserves better servants than a mangy stray that son of a prostitute brought in, probably out of a brothel.

Jiang Yanli has to try to mitigate this, too. She also makes a few suggestions about ways A-Lei could communicate without speaking — pointing to pictures, perhaps? Hand gestures? Pantomime isn't very dignified, but they ought to let A-Lei express herself…

He Lei runs away from any such suggestions. She's not willing to 'speak' when Jin Guangyao doesn't want her to and jeopardize her siblings.

Jiang Yanli is disappointed, but respects her shyness.

(Nie Huaisang is not going to respect her shyness, especially when he's mostly sure he's seen her among Jinlintai's servants some time before her official appearance, but for the moment he's biding his time.)

He Lei goes to extreme lengths to avoid Jin Guangshan.

Meanwhile Xue Yang hears that Wen Qing is going to see if she can do anything for Wen Ning's sense of taste, next, and "helps" by providing a half-dozen fresh tongues for her to dissect.

(Wei Wuxian's internal monologue: —just mathematically there have to be at least a few resentful ghosts who have it out for Jin Guangshan with sex-related grievances. Now if you could both locate them, and then use their motivation to direct enough other ghosts to overcome Jin Guangshan's level of cultivation… Well, I could, if I had Chenqing and the Seal. Ugh, I'm pregnant with bad seasonal allergies I can't really treat, which has resulted in some secondary infections. Plus my husband has bad cabin fever and won't admit he has what I'm 98% sure is mild but chronic anxiety. So there's been a lot of me coughing horribly and him "just asking" if I'm *really sure* it's a sinus infection.

Man, that sounds awful. One of my colleagues is set to give birth in like a week, and she’s miserable enough without allergies. 

It may be helpful, given anxiety often isn’t rational but I’m sure it’s tiring to keep being asked, to discuss what you’d be doing differently if it WAS covid. Like, a sinus infection is basically treated in the same fashion because most of them are viral too, correct? And even if you are taking antibiotics, that’s not going to harm you if it is covid. So it may help to point out that even if it isn’t a sinus infection, you’re still treating “covid” when you treat the sinus infection. Between that and having or making a concrete plan for if it does end up being covid and you take a turn for the worse, that may settle him somewhat. My mother was very relieved when I told her I had an ER “go bag” packed in case I get very sick very suddenly; now she knows I’m prepared and there’s a plan in place.

Actually, this is how the coronavirus manifested for my partner. He's just really lethargic and unable to taste or smell anything. He's also got a minor cough and runny nose, though those might be allergies. Anyway, he's a paramedic so he got tested and sure enough, he's got it. It's strange to say that I hope you have it, too, but if this is the worst it gets for you and then you get immunity, that seems like a pretty good deal. Feel better soon!

I did hear that losing a sense of smell/taste was a symptom, but fortunately it’s not quite that -- I can still taste food, like I had a chicken sandwich this morning and could taste the chicken and the avocado, it’s just I got no enjoyment from it, and was very unenthused about even making it. I keep thinking “Oh, I want something hot, I want something made for me” but then I run through the list of foods I could order in, which in Chicago is a lot of options, and I just can’t come up with anything. Even pizza, which I will almost never say no to and which is so close I could go pick up so I wouldn’t have to deal with delivery, I’m just like “Meh. The cheese will upset my stomach.”

God, you totally articulated my thoughts. Especially the nose running all winter - is this normal runny nose or Corvid 19 runny nose? I'm hot - do I have a fever or is it because the sun is shining on me at my desk right now? I have to keep calming myself down, or maybe if not 'calming' at least settling myself down. And the ENNUI is killing me. I feel like I'm having mild panic/anxiety attacks about work, but they are so flattened...I guess that's good, I guess. ��

When I was younger and reading the “Death” series of Discworld novels, I remember Albert (Death’s servant) was described as perpetually having a drip at the end of his nose, and I was like “Gross, how does that even work? I’ve never had a drip at the end of my nose, that must be like a joke” and this past winter I have had a perpetual, INFURIATING drip at the end of my nose. Getting older is terrible. 

I figure, I know the main symptoms, and I know which of them I tend to have anyway, so I discount those, and as long as I don’t have a fever it doesn’t matter anyway. So I’m just slowly wearing out the battery on my digital thermometer.

I think you and I are in the same weird space (also got my masks and extra toilet paper ahead of the panic buying for completely different and long running reasons so lol). Hearing everybody else struggling I keep finding myself second guessing my own 'fine'. If everybody isn't fine, is my 'fine' somehow a manifestation of not being fine? I have finally decided to just stop asking myself if I'm truly fine and just letting the anxiety hit me when it decides to arrive.

Yeah, I ask myself if I’m in denial like 2-3 times a day, but I feel like if I were in denial I wouldn’t have been able to hold up against my onslaught of asking this long.  :D

I needed this. I had a slightly elevated temperature and sore throat last week and so I’ve not gone out since just so I wouldn’t risk making other people sick, but I wasn’t sick enough to really “feel” sick, except that I’ve also been unable to concentrate and work even when I was trying and my boss said it was fine and to just not force myself to work instead of recovering, but today was meant to be my (self-imposed) “back to work” deadline and I stayed up until 2 playing video games and am now lying in bed paralysed with stress over WHAT TO DO. Do I go for a run? Do I fold the giant pile of clean laundry that has built up? Do I tidy my desk? Do I shower and get dressed, or should that wait until after the hypothetical run? Do I just force myself to turn on the computer, log in to the server, and open the appropriate code?

Aw, I’m sorry you’ve been sick! And it’s super hard to get back to work at the best of times. I’m lucky that I’m expected to be “at work” for very specific hours, and to set my away message when I’m afk, which gets me working on time, but it’s still rough. 

I’ve taken to keeping the Tasks app open on my phone and adding literally every task I need to do, from “buy headphones” (I need a corded set with a mic to participate in work conference calls) to “read the news” (for my job) to “scoop the litter” (which I don’t normally need to be reminded to do). Then every day I put them in order of how I’ll do them, with anything I think I probably won’t have the energy for at the bottom. I know that freaks some people out a LOT because that’s a LONG LIST TO GET THROUGH but for me it’s comforting that I won’t forget anything because it’s all in the list, and the decision about when to do them is made. :D

He makes me livid! I get so mad!!! I don't understand him at all. He makes me go UGH but in bad ways.

I went off on him first before I realised what his problem was... Like total accusations and misfit drama. All paranoid loca. I don't give a shit.

I draw conclusions and those were the most obvious.

But when you know someone... You have to remember their stupidity. One time he confessed... And I already had decided to break up with him... I was all I'm waiting till his dad dies then I'm done. He's a good friend when he tries but he doesn't make me,a priority. And so I hadn't told him. I just tired of him,upsetting me so I had to remove me.

So he said he wouldn't do anything for his pain,then, he would take 2x his Percocet with 5 shots of tequila then treat me like shit.

I really hadnt noticed. I was all "oh he's just in his mood where he's decided I'm not important to him"

And true enough when he told me his dad died I walked away from our relationship.

But honestly ... Years later... I missed him.. Because he treated me best. Because I say I walked

I mean I left, completely.

But despite his faults he's always treated me best. I mean person to person. He didn't give me what I wanted from,the relationship. But as a low key friend, he understood me the most

He understood i was scared to go to sleep and he would stay on the phone and help,me,sleep so I could. No one else can do that. My daughter, if she was sleeping with me. I could listen to her breathe and I could fall asleep that way. Because it would calm my r breathing if she was sleeping that calm sleep,breath

But he knew all what to say. And I never had to tell him or even tell him I was afraid to sleep or even admit it to myself.

I don't like hospitals or doctors (I like my personal doctors But aside from them) in general. I'm afraid of them. They make me hostile. I feel like theyre some dangerous S&M dungeon

Go and wait for hours to get bad news then they don't give you what you need because you're so fucking exhausted they don't understand. Or don't care or are the ones that like to kill patients.

So I like my doctors although I have to wait for hours to see them past my appointment time, they take extra time to see me and cover what I think I need. Their quality is worth the wait. I have 3. Primary, Pain and Urgent Care. And I use the computer urgent care where I leave an online message after finishing a long ass quizz through the insurance website.

And whatever pills they give me, I Google to make sure they were right. They always are. Im also interested in what else the pills cover. Like i take 2 different anti seizure pills for pain and one also for insulin sensitivity increase and metabolic increase. And i take an antidepressant that also covers fibromyalgia.

I have 13 prescriptions. Monthly. Some I have to take more than once per day. Plus i take vitamins.

Then I Google the pharmacy pills to make sure the pharmacy was right.

So.

I get it. Sometimes I don't want to take 13 prescriptions more than once per day or even at all.

But we need to know what we are taking and why.

And why it is important.

And we need to take our medicine. So we can survive

I think this information is especially important during this epidemic.

Now realize that antibiotics are not useful on viruses unless the virus causes a bacterial infection. Like.

A cold is a virus but in some people like myself and used to in my daughter, causes a severe sinus infection which requires antibiotics.

I know the point at which we need antibiotics and so i go to my urgent care lady because she understands and we just do a walk in. And i don't overwhelm my doctor who is taking time to give quality care and has long waiting patients.

But otherwise a virus does not respond to antibiotics. And anti-virus medications are quite rare.

Flu shot... But not a cold shot..

So we take over the counter medicine for our symptoms. Like coughing and runny nose

Sinus pressure in the eyes, nose, teeth. Jaw.

If you have a tooth ache you can take sinus medicine. Because the worst tooth pain is actually in your sinus cavity! That's a secret trick. Works every time.

So basically anytime you have facial pain that doesn't respond to Tylenol or ibuprofen or alieve, you can take sinus medicine. Also ear pain.

Google sinus cavities in the face and you'll see why.

Now an ear and sinus infection is a bacteria, usually but usually our bodies can fight it Well without an anti biotic. As long as it is treated with over the counter medicine. But sometimes, like with myself and my daughter, sometimes an antibiotic is needed..but that is after at least a week to 10 days of serious green overflow that doesn't respond to over the counter medicine.

Sometimes the bacteria is lab revealed by terrorists during the "flu and cold season" to create an income for pharmaceutical companies. For my daughter and i, they're usually too strong for our immune system.

Although since my ex husband left town, my daughter's immune system has significantly became stronger. While mine has not. So she needs less antibiotics, than I do.

Otherwise, my body can fight it on its own with a few doses of otc.

I had a tooth pulled a few years ago.. It created a pathway to my sinuses. I could rinse water in my mouth and it would come out my nose. I saw an ear, nose and throat specialist whom said i needed surgery immediately to repair my nose.

I said no thank you mother fucker

I had to have clearance from my cardiologist. So i took a stress test and failed. So i had to have an ultra sound. It wasn't good. But they said I could have the surgery since it was simple.

I said that's cool, but I don't want to.

I haven't done it. So I get sinus infection and pain quite often. My bone structure in my nose is center in my right nostril. Meaning it's really fucking bad

From being punched in the face a lot. The surgery sounds fucking horrible. And it's a cosmetic change.

I'm all nope. I'm a single mom. She don't take good care of me. I'll drown in the blood sliding down the back of my throat.

The tooth removal was so bad... It was horrible. There was blood every where for days... I can only imagine the nose surgery would be the same

I also hate the smell of blood. So I'm like no. It sounds like the most miserable thing.

If I had someone to take care of me and baby me like a little blood soaked lamb in need of care... That's s different story.. But I don't have anyone that would take care of me

After my tooth... I was throwing up the blood and my kid just stood there and stared,. Which I wanted to hide it from her I was sick... But I was in the kitchen and began violently puking in the trash can... Scared her to death

"Mom I'm scared"

"I am, too. This has never happened before"

So yeah fuck that nose. I got one crooked fucking nose. And it makes me sick.

She wants me to have surgery so I'll quit snoring.

Well.

Ear plugs are at the Dollar Tree, babe.

And they don't want to slap your face off. But you'll drive them to it. And a crooked nose isnt all its cracked up to Be. It pretty much sucks.

you come back and jisung’s face lightens up as he sees you struggling as your arms are full of popcorn, chocolate, candy and ice cream

“holy shit i love you y/n” he says without thinking

you completely freeze up and his eyes widen comically

“ummmm u-uhhh i-i didn’t mean that w-well i kinda did b-but ANYWAYS let me help you with that” jisung says stumbling adorably over his words 

and you’re in shock at the fact he didn’t completely outright deny what he said

and the fact han jisung the smoothest talker you know was a blushing fidgety mess 

seeing this sort of side to him you couldn’t help but get all soft

after setting down all the food the awkward atmosphere lessened 

you plop down on the couch pretty close to jisung and play the movie

after 30 minutes you felt super sleepy and instinctively you put your head on jisung’s shoulder 

before you could even realise what you did 

jisung automatically puts his arm around you letting you snuggle into him comfortably

you thought to yourself 

fuck it what would just a little bit of cuddling change

you got your answer as you were about to fall asleep still cuddling with jisung

“i’m really sorry for everything y/n” jisung says into your hair muffling his words slightly

but you could hear the sincerity of his words

and you just gave in

you wanted your best friend back

“it’s okay i forgive you ‘sung” you mumble back still super sleepy

you couldn’t see but jisung’s smile while looking down at you was just pure happiness and love

and he hesitated a bit before he kissed you on the forehead

jisung leans his head on yours and his eyes droopily close

and that’s how you two fell asleep

with the tv still on 

the fireplace still crackling

and the snacks all eaten 

with you two all snuggled up on the couch with a huge warm woolen blanket wrapped around you two 

you woke up groggily yawning then you felt just like a solid body that you were leaning on 

and you looked up and you saw jisung

you automatically jump out of the snuggling position you were in 

then you see jisung open his eyes slightly 

as you put your hands all over your body in panic and sigh in relief as you realise you have all your clothes on

you didn't realise that jisung was fully awake until he burst out laughing

between his laughs he spluttered out “y-you r-really thought w-we slept-t together?” 

you angrily pout at him crossing your arms “well i’m sorry that was my first reaction when i see that we slept on the couch all night” 

jisung can’t help but think how adorable you as you try to be angry

“well i’m glad you think of us like that” he says suggestively wigging his eyebrows 

“HAN JISUNG” you shout hitting him with a pillow 

“ow ow ow i’m sorryyyyy” he cutely says

you huff out “get up it’s already noon and i need to do some last minute christmas shopping” 

“is that an invitation for me to join?” jisung sneakily asks

“no. it is an invitation for you to clean up this mess though” you say pointing to the rubbish on the coffee table from last night’s snacks

you get ready to go shopping and you say you’re going as jisung was still washing the dishes

you knew that you needed time to sort out all the feelings which you still haven’t processed at all

even though you already knew what they all meant

last night you forgave jisung 

and now you two were back to how you used to be

but something new was in the mix

and you knew exactly what it was 

but what scared you was the fact you liked the fact that feeling was there

the feeling of liking han jisung 

and it was as if fate hated you even more

because just as you tried to turn on your engine

as you take the spoon of his mouth 

he splutters out “y-you” trying to formulate words

you laugh even harder

“dinner’s ready” you say between your laughs 

you guys again sat on the couch with your soup as you put on a tv show

jisung spilled a bit of his soup

and you two bickered back and forth as he cleaned it up

during the bickering you couldn’t help but think 

you two were acting like an old married couple

“i did the dishes this morning so you should clean it up”

“uM EXCUSE ME you’re the one WHO SPILLED IT”

once jisung cleaned up and finished his soup

without hesitation he lied down on your lap

you played with his hair the whole time 

at one point you two ended up cuddling 

then you both fell asleep like that again 

“we really gotta stop falling asleep on the couch like this” says jisung as you wake up

you look up at him and squeak because of how close he is

he laughs softly at your reaction “morning sweetheart” he says

“morning” you say with a yawn

it was christmas eve and you two spent the whole day in your pjs

first wrapping the presents

which was a lot of trying to run into each other’s room to see what the other person has gotten 

both of you failed 

you two went outside to make a snowman 

which didn’t happen and just ended up being a snowball fight

after you two dried up you made hot chocolate for the both of you 

to warm you guys cuddled up on the couch right next to the fire place and talked for an hour or so

i’ve been in close contact with 9 people in the past two weeks (plus taken public transport and gone grocery shopping), so i’ve notified them that i’ve shown symptoms and at least one half (my host family from last year) seem to be taking it seriously. 

my current boss says he highly doubts i’ve got covid because i’m young and otherwise healthy but like, as i keep saying (since two members of my family have already gotten it, one of them dying), nobody is the exception!! you could be doing everything right and still manage to get it. for me, i live in a highly populated city and have been back at work for 3 weeks, using public transport. i’ve worn a mask, but i work with kids, and every other week they’re with their mom, who goes to work in an office while i’m watching her kids, then comes home. like i have no idea how carefully she’s making sure they’re washing their hands or cleaning surfaces after she comes home from the office and touches cabinets, etc! 

i will say that i have been known to get the occasional headache, but other than that my yearly sickness is usually in the winter when i’ll get a runny nose/stuffy cold OR a sore throat. i don’t often get fevers, much less fevers that stick around for a week. and i can’t stress enough how TIRED i am compared to normal fatigue. i have never felt this tired while sleeping as much as i’m sleeping.

It was so nice to eat some real fucking food right now. Seth has always done his best in many aspects of his life; work out, training, rehab. Usually he does pretty well considering his diet. But, the second Dean brought up the chance to eat the best damn plate of steak and eggs he’s ever had, Seth got weak.

Dean and hadn’t been able to hang out for the longest time apart from actual work. It had been way too long since they just got to relax and just chill and enjoy each other’s company.

They had gotten to the restaurant fairly late. It was a quiet place with old wood paneling and some stereotypical Americana style but it wasn’t ovee the top. On the contrary, if you hadn’t been looking for this place you might have just passed it by.

They walk in wearing just some jeans and shirts, with Seth adding a warm hoodie and his glasses with his hair in a bun, while Dean wore his leather jacket and topped it off with a beanie. They were first lead to a bigger table for two closer to the front of the restaurant, but before Seth could take his seat his friend had stopped him.

“You got any place more private?” He asked the hostess.

The young woman was a little surprised, maybe even intimidated but she quickly recovered and lead them to a smaller but more secluded booth at the back of the restaurant.

Once they took their seats and the hostess left them their menus, Dean pulled his beanie off and tucked it away in his jacket.

Seth still found himself expecting Dean’s old soft curls to tumble out of the woolen cap, but he had to admit the shorter hair did suit him too.

“This place doesn’t get too croweded.” Dean spoke without taking his eyes away from the menu. “But can’t be too careful... I mean just seemed like a nice night to not have to bother with too many people you know?” He asked rhetorically.

But Seth found himself nodding in agreement. As much as he loved the WWE Universe, there were just times he’d much rather just have a good quiet night with his friend.

Out of no where, Dean produced a lighter and lit the candle that sat between them on the table top. Seth looked at him confusedly.

“It kinda gets dim here at the back.” He explained as if it were a normal occurance. Maybe it was so Seth quickly shrugged it off.

Just then their waiter had quietly arrived to stand by their table. His pad open and ready with his pen.

“Good evening,” he spoke light and chipper. “I’m Kyle and I will be your server for tonight, what can i get you two fine gentlemen.”

Seth blushed from noticing the younger man’s emphasis on ‘fine’ when the he had spoke to them, but quickly coughed it off as he readied himself to order.

“No gentlemen here,” Dean had joked before he had taken his menu and Seth, from his hands, and gave them to the blonde waiter. “Both of us will be having the steak and eggs. I like mine rare with the eggs a little runny with a side of fries,” he ordered “My boy here like’s his medium with a pouched egg on top, also runny and a ceaser salad on the side. He’ll tell you no bacon coz he thinks he needs to lose a couple of pounds, but sneak some in there will you coz I think his six-pack really won’t suffer very much.”

Seth was really hoping the heat he felt on his face was just from the candle light, but he was pretty sure it was from Dean’s antics. The older man always had a way of surprising him in ways still in exactly him.

The young waiter giggled while taking their menus, the young man seemed so flustered that it was Dean who had to stop him from turning right away to add their drink orders.

As the server made his way back to the kitchen Seth asked his friend, “What was that about?”

“What?”

“Didn’t have to order for me.”

“You would have read through the menu cover to cover if I hadn’t stopped you,” the blue-eyed man teased, “And like i said, the stake and eggs here are insane. You’ll love them.. plus i already know what you wanted anyway.”

Looking back, Seth did realized he would have just ended up ordering practically the exact same dish, sans the bacon, but he secretly thanked the other man for that.

They both talked while they waited for their food. They traded stories regarding their rehabilitation. Seth asked about the infection, a little shy not wanting to push too much. Dean answered eagerly in the only way he knows how when talking to people he trusts. They talked about family. Seth asked about Dean’s mom and sister. Dean asked how the wrestling school in Iowa was going, even teased flying over to teach the young bucks all about the creative use of barbwire and thumbtacks.

They were both laughing their asses off when Kylehad retured with their orders. The moment the aroma hit Seth’s nose, he knew Dean made good on his claim. This steak was going to be good. They had eaten enthusiasitically, taking breaks between bites only to talk about how good the actual bite was. The steak was perfect. The pouched egg was good and runny and even the salad hadn’t tasted boring. The bacon may have added a bit there. At one point dean used his fork to grab himself a cherry tomato from Seth’s plate which made the Armenian pout. But Dean silently apologized by placing couple of his fries on his plate as a peace offering.

They had cleaned off both their plates. Clear indication of their approval fro the meal. As Seth was busy drinking his beer, and maybe subtly adjusting his belt, Dean had motioned for the check.

Kyle came around to their table and placed the check on Dean’s side of the table.

“How much was that?” Seth asked.

“Don’t sweat it.” Dean said plainly as he tucked his payment in the small booklet and gave it back to Kyle their server. “I owed you for lunch the other week.”

Seth quirked his eyebrow as he recapped their las week together only to reply “That was for Chepotle.”

“Still owe you,” Dean shrugged it off, clearly it being a non-issue for the older man. “Anyway, I’m gonna to bathroom for a second. Be right back.”

Seth only nodded, he could barely move from how full he had felt. He slumped into his seat and just breathed. It had been so long since he had a moment to just chill like this. To be back with Dean again too, Seth could see this is a better night than he’s had for the past few months.

Kyle had returned with the little booklet and placed it almost exactly where he had placed it on Dean’s side.

Seth motioned for the server to lean closer, “Hey, how much was mine?” He asked quietly.

“Oh no no no sweetie...” Kyle spoke with an even lighter tone. “You do not want to anger a top like that. Just let him take care of you.”

“Huh?” He asked confusedly.

“Your man.” He clarified. “There are not dnough men like those and you got a good one; candle lit dinner, knows your order, pays for the meal. The man even gave you his fries.. I mean girl, anyone would be jealous of a daddy like that.”

“Wha-?” Seth’s eyes grew wide as the realization hit him harder spear to the gut. “You think- me and him.?!?” He stammered. “I mean.. no. No. No its not like that.”

“Hey baby you ready to go?” Dean chose that perfect time to come back to their table.

Kyle was beaming.

Seth had stood up and nodded his head. The words from the server echoing in his head over and over again. He practically walked in a trance, with his friend following suit.

Once they got outside in the cold December, Seth felt sudden soft warm over and ontop of his head.

Turning to his companion in surprised. He asked “What are you doing?”

142:One of my scars, how did I get it?

My Aunt re-married when I was 8 and the guy had a son a few months older than me, and we babysat him for a month during their honeymoon. Well, this boy wasn’t a good influence on me at all, but that’s beside the point. I thought he was… you know what, that actually is the point, but…. I though he was cool, and he could do things and did things that I wanted to try.

Well, one day, we laid out flat a futon and covered it with all the cushions and pillows from the couch that was also downstairs. Then, he grabbed an exercise ball, put it on the futon, got on it, rolled across the futon over the pillows, and stood up on the other side of the futon when he was done and I was so impressed, it blew my mind that he laid his midsection on the ball and rolled the ball like 6 feet and didn’t move or fall off of the exercise ball as it rolled.

So I tried it. And at the end, I slid off the ball, but not to land. I didn’t know how he stayed horizontal, and it showed, as I fell forward and slammed the side of me head into the corner of a cabinet right next to the far side of the cabinet. It hurt, and so I didn’t try a second time… until he successfully did it again a few minutes later. So I, desperately wanting to do it right and be “cool” like him, tried to do it again.

And I hit the exact same part of the side of my head on the corner of the cabinet again, almost exactly how my run went the first time. After the second hit, my head really hurt, and so I put my hands to my head, ran halfway up the stairs, and began to cry.

Also know that I was going through a phase where I loved to fake cry. I thought imitating the sounds of crying without the tears was one of the funniest things. And my mom hated it. She was a stay-at-home mom at that point, had been from a few months before I was born until my youngest sister entered elementary school with us. And so she was at home all day, every day (hence the babysitting). So, for the two months of summer by that point, my fake crying obsession was driving her up the wall.

Back to the story. Now, I’m sitting on the staircase, hands on my head because it hurts, tears forming in my eyes and my voice beginning to make all the crying sounds that I made when I was fake crying all summer so I guess my imitations were spot on. But after about a minute, I decided remove my arms from my head, and I looked at them, and there were lines of blood all the way from my fingers to my elbows and drops had fallen from my elbows onto my sock, and I shrieked.

I immediately went back down the stairs to the office where mom was on the computer, and the tears were coming almost as steady as the blood, and I was full-out crying. My mom, who was looking at the screen and thus only heard me crying, lashed out angrily, telling me to stop bothering her with that freaking fake crying. That is, until I got her to look at my arms. She took me upstairs and cleaned me up a little, but, while my bleeding slowed significantly, it didn’t stop.

After about 3 hours, my dad came home from work, and the bleeding still hadn’t stopped, and so we went to the hospital. I ended up getting 5 or 6 stitches, and when my hair is cut short enough, you can see the small white line.

That’s the only scar that I definitely know that I have. I haven’t really done anything physically risky since. That’s also pretty much when I stopped crying all that much…

I’d buy a large enough apartment to have space to wander around (picture Castle’s apartment from the show Castle, and pretty much like that but a little less opulent and I don’t need all the ornate luxuries around. Just the space of like 5-7 medium/large open rooms with a comfortable bed and a non-cramped bathroom or two, and a nice big kitchen for all the food I’m going to have.

I’d always have root beer in stock, along with some snacks that I like, and I’d have whatever foods my friends like because my closest friends would have invitations to come at literally any time (like, this is for max 6 people), and I’d like to regularly meet up with my closest friends and I’ll treat them to nice filling dinners at the local diners, Denny’s, wherever they want, even McDonald’s or whatever, and I’ll tip really well, like at least $50 dollars because those people are always so nice, and I’ll splurge so much on my friends.

I’d also donate a bunch to all of those people who really need it that I see come across my dash, and I’ll donate a crapload to my high school band because they meant the world to me, and I’d FUND THE ARTS BECAUSE THE ARTS ARE IMPORTANT.

What is your favorite video game that you own that you’ve never seen elsewhere and is likely not well-known at all?

I love the game Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords for the Wii, and I can play it for hours upon hours for days and not get bored. It’s a really fun game with a long storyline that is entertaining and original, and I just love playing it and have literally only ever seen it at our house since my mom somehow found it and bought it like 7 years ago.

Day 6/365

My day was extremely uneventful. So my goal is to make this blog post the best one yet. Do you think I can do it?

I’ve spent my day in my feelings and sick. Like flu sick. Like I think I’m going to die sick. But no fever so I guess that’s a plus?

Sore throat, runny nose, that dry nasty cough that makes your whole throat clench and achy. Not fun. I had to have soup today. If you know me, you would know I absolutely HATE soup unless I’m super sick. And to top it all off, I feel guilty for only going to school two days this week. 

(I love the fact that I can use bad grammar here and no one can judge me.)

Then to the feelings part, I don’t know if I want to go into total detail. 

But what the hell it’s my blog.

I’ve just been hung up thinking about this one person in my life. And how amazing and thoughtful they are. Really making my whole life a lot better because things just aren’t the best if I’m perfectly honest. Maybe I’ll open up but it’s only the first few days of this blog anyway. 

Today is Dia de los Reyes and I really wanted to go to Spanish Harlem. I’m upset that I missed the parade. I’ve never went but I really want to go. This is the first year I couldn’t spend with one of my favorite people. My great-grandmother. She’s currently in Puerto Rico and might come back to the states. She’s 94 years old and everyday, on this holiday, I miss her the most. 

This is her FAVORITE holiday. Every year we gather to her house (the past few years at my godmother/aunt’s house) and play all kinds of instruments and sing all kinds of songs in Spanish that I can’t remember the name of because I’m a terrible Hispanic. (I can’t speak Spanish enough to save my life.) And then late at night we would gather grass and water in buckets for the camels. And then we all go to bed. Supposedly you’re supposed to leave your shoes in the window too but we never did that. I just heard of that tradition. Then when we woke up there would be small gifts under our beds or by the door and the grass would be gone. A trail of grass and droplets of water leading to the door. 

Imagine having grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Imagine being the mother of 3-5 generations and meeting each and every one of them. Imagine the pride that woman must feel.

(That was 2012 or 2013)

Although most of the kids were old enough to know it was the parents who had done it all we all were still a little swept off our feet because somehow it seemed like magic to us. The three kings had came to OUR house and left grass and water going out the door. Maybe they really did come? Then the Sunday after or before we would all go to Spanish mass. 

The first time I ever went to church was with my great-grandmother and godmother and going with them just makes things better for me. It reminds me of that FEELING. Sorry if you don’t go to mass or aren’t Catholic because you won’t understand what I’m about to talk about. (I can’t speak for every Christian or Catholic but I can from my own experience). 

You know that feeling you get after you go to mass? You know after you get the communion and pray for forgiveness? You just feel so connected to God and you just get that waft of peace and you feel like you can breathe. And when you leave you just appreciate things more. It’s funny because when she sees me, she thinks I’m my mom and always says how I look so young to have a baby (my sister, she’s 7) who she thinks is me. Some things are lost in her memory but her love for family had never really went away and hopefully never does. It’s her family that keeps her alive.

The Asbestos of the 2000’s, Black Mold

What the CDC isn’t telling us, and what you can do about it.

In 1997, a surge of news reports were flooding the headlines regarding several rare deaths caused by mold illness. The CDC and the EPA both responded by shutting down the supposed conspiracy theories surrounding the suspicious causes of deaths. Years later, a flurry of reports came in regarding a similar string of deaths again citing mold toxicity. Yet these headlines are not getting the attention they should be.

It began in Cleveland, Ohio at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. Dr. Dorr Dearborn noticed a pattern between infant patients and started piecing together what was causing their symptoms. At first glance, it seemed each patient’s lungs were bleeding for no apparent reason. Bleeding lungs afflict one in four million children, however, Cleveland was seeing one in every thousand babies affected.

That made the incidence rate in Cleveland the highest in the world. Seeing so many cases in one city, all clustered within a six-mile radius of Rainbow Hospital, convinced Dearborn that he had an epidemic on his hands.

"I knew the disease should only affect one in four million," Dearborn says. "So I called the CDC."

Ruth Etzel, the CDC's former chief of air pollution and respiratory health, was on a flight to Cleveland the next day. Dearborn saw two more cases in December, which brought the total number of impacted babies to ten. Records showed that some of the infants had improved in the hospital and been sent home, only to return after suffering subsequent bleeding episodes. This led the researchers to suspect an environmental problem in the home.

When the CDC revealed the supposed link of pulmonary hemosiderosis to black mold in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report in January 1997, a virtual media panic descended on the city. The conducted study had found an association between the ‘black mold ‘Stachybotrys chartarum, also known as Stachybotrys atra, and the infant bleeding-lung disease. Dearborn would need to prove the mold caused the illness in laboratory research or show evidence of mold spores or toxins in the sick babies.

Etzel was researching mycotoxins, and turned up evidence that Stachybotrys had caused hemorrhaging in farm animals in Europe. She returned to Cleveland with a mycologist who found Stachybotrys in five case homes. The excessive rainfall in the summer of 1994 and recurrent plumbing problems contributed to the water damage sustained by some of the case homes, creating a favorable environment for Stachybotrys growth.

Investigators discovered that all the  infants lived in homes older than sixty years, all of which had recent water damage. They found the case infants were more likely to live in homes with larger quantities of Stachybotrys chartarum and other molds than were the control infants.

Driven by concern for the public health and leaks to the press, Dearborn and Etzel went public with their findings in early 1995.

A number of other mold scares had been reported around the country. The Tottenville Branch Library on Staten Island, which had a particularly damp basement, was shut after a staff member had trouble breathing, and Stachybotrys was reportedly found. Panic began to spread and insurance companies joined in the pandemonium.

Fear of lawsuits caused schools, libraries, and other buildings across the country to be closed and cleaned, at great expense, when even small traces of Stachybotrys were found. The mold was responsible for closing a branch of the New York City Library in 1997 and chasing the American Red Cross out of its headquarters in Minneapolis earlier this month. A case in Texas made national headlines when a woman was awarded $32 million after she sued her insurance company because it didn't cover mold damage claims.Thousands of people were filing suits over toxic mold.

In 1997, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found an apparent link between mold contamination in the homes and cases of infant pulmonary hemorrhage.

Stachybotrys chartarum appears slimy and black, possibly with white edges. Once inhaled, the toxins are thought to attack the immune system. Studies have shown that adults who have had chronic exposure to Stachybotrys have reported a variety of ailments, including flu symptoms, dermatitis, and fatigue. The effect on infants, as suggested by the Cleveland study, seems much more severe, because their lungs are still developing. The Stachybotrys toxins may disrupt the development of the capillary walls, enabling any kind of stress factor, such as a simple cough, to cause the capillaries to rupture and the lungs to bleed.

One question, in particular, which researchers could not answer with any degree of certainty, has also become a chief criticism: Stachybotrys is common in water-damaged buildings throughout the country, so why has this cluster of rare, unexplained lung bleeding occurred only in Cleveland? The answer is, it wasn’t and it’s still ongoing.

One of the most troubling aspects of the controversy is the reluctance of the CDC to reveal any information about its review of the Cleveland study or its position on whether it still believes that unexplained pulmonary hemosiderosis is linked to the black mold. The CDC did not set up interviews with any of its staff experts, despite repeated calls to the agency's press office over a two-week period and discussions with three different spokespeople. Calls to CDC epidemiologist, who was reportedly on the review committee, were not returned.

In 2002, the U.S. International Trade Commission reported that according to one estimate, US insurers paid over $3 billion in mold-related lawsuits, more than double the previous year's total.  According to the Insurance Information Institute, in 2003 there were over 10,000 mold-related lawsuits pending in US state courts. Most were filed in states with high humidity, but suits were on the rise in other states as well. By 2004, many mold litigation settlements were for amounts well past $100,000. In 2005, the U.S. International Trade Commission reported that toxic mold showed signs of being the "new asbestos" in terms of claims paid. However, in 2007 laws began to change.

Farmers Insurance, for instance, has said that it will stop selling new homeowner's policies that include water-damage coverage. In addition, it has asked the Department of Insurance to allow the company to exclude mold damage from its policies entirely, even mold that results from a covered event.

23 years later, deaths and cover-ups are still ongoing. Mysteries seem to stir around the investigations started, the findings and conclusions of the mold epidemic.

Depression

That same year environmental activist Erin Brockovich received settlements of $430,000 from two parties and an undisclosed amount from a third party to settle her lawsuit alleging toxic mold in her Agoura Hills, California, home.

In 2004, the Institute of Medicine released a report finding evidence of a link between certain species of mold exposure and severe respiratory illnesses. A later review of research conducted by the World Health Organization reached the same conclusion, and called attention to findings that mold exposure appears to lead to an increase in the chances of children developing and dying from asthma. 

In 2006, a Manhattan Beach, California family received a $22.6 million settlement in a toxic mold case. The family had asserted that that moldy lumber had caused severe medical problems in their child. That same year, Hilton Hotels received $25 million in settlement of its lawsuit over mold growth in the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Kalia Tower.

In 2010, a jury awarded $1.2 million in damages in a lawsuit against a landlord for neglecting to repair a mold-infested house in Laguna Beach, California. The lawsuit asserted that a child in the home suffered from severe respiratory problems for several years as a result of the mold.

In 2011, in North Pocono, Pennsylvania, a jury awarded two homeowners $4.3 million in a toxic mold verdict.

Between October 2014 and January 2017, five mold-infection-related deaths occurred at two UPMC hospitals. Several related lawsuits have been filed against the hospital system, which settled with two of the patients for $1.35 million each.

In 2019, Months after a mold infection killed a pediatric patient at Seattle Children's Hospital, its CEO has revealed that fourteen patients have become ill from the same infection since 2001. The hospital shuttered eleven operating rooms twice, first in May and again this month, after it detected the common mold Aspergillus in the air. Mold exposure represents a major public health issue worldwide. Yet, the CDC still states that mold is not serious and should not be tested.

According to the World Health Organization, 7 million deaths per year are linked to indoor and outdoor air pollution. For years, people complaining about the effects of living or working in damp, mold-filled environments has not been taken seriously. Nothing is scarier than knowing something is making you and your family sick, and not being able to figure out what it is. The anxiety caused by an unseen danger like toxic mold can feel overwhelming. 

There is currently no standard for indoor air quality, meaning, there’s no safe and unsafe levels of mold. Both the EPA and the CDC advise against testing seemingly because they are unwilling to set a baseline of limitations for indoor mold that can affect insurance companies bottom lines. It’s time for both of these organizations to change this. 

The CDC needs to reopen it’s investigation and reconsider this as a serious public health concern. Okay! I am a 17 year old male who has been driving in total for 2 years and I have unfortunately had 2 accidents. The first occurred in May of last year.
