I think people have it in their head that solas in inquisition is his “true self” but like. He’s manipulating the inquisitor the whole time too. That’s not his true self, that’s another mask he’s using as a tool

His plan was to use the orb to tear down the veil after the conclave. He allowed corypheus to find the orb, with the goal of swooping in after the explosion at the conclave to rip open the fade from there. The inquisitor disrupted his plans as much as they disrupted corypheus’ plans, and as much as corypheus disrupted his plans by staying alive. In that moment, both the inquisitor and corypheus are the people who fucked up his plans.

He doesn’t join the inquisition out of some altruistic desire to save the world from corypheus. He joins the inquisition because he wants the orb so he can tear down the veil. Which means stopping corypheus and retrieving it from him AND either retrieving the mark from the inquisitor or finding a way to use it through the inquisitor to his purpose.

He doesn’t stay with the inquisitor following the conclave explosion to save their life. He’s there to study the mark and figure out how to remove it. He can’t, so keeping you alive to preserve it is the next best thing.

When he talks to you about stuff like blood magic, or debates on the personhood of spirits, he is not speaking as a humble elven apostate trying to convince you of his point of view, he’s gauging your reaction to things to learn about you and how to manipulate you. In one of these conversations he even brings up a hypothetical world without the veil, because he’s trying to gauge the inquisitors reaction tho that possibility (which is very much not hypothetical to him)

At the end of the game it has become obvious he’s not getting the mark from the inquisitor anytime soon, he’s not going to be able to manipulate the inquisitor to join his cause, and the orb is broken. He has no use for the inquisitor or the inquisition, so he leaves. It’s all a pretence, and it’s one he abandoned in an instant.

Same with characters like Stolas. when it was pilot / ep1 and some of s1 Stolas I was like 'I buy this guy as a royal who like Alastor has secret levels of power he doesn't use most of the time, because he carries himself like a prince and a high ranking demon even as he's waaaaay more sexual than Alastor is'. but when the writing went down the drain I couldn't stop noticing how huge his eyes were getting, how unpleasant and ill fitting his 'sassy' expressions were, how much I hated his creepy claws and stupid bird feet

Viv's strengths aren't character designs but they work well enough I could ignore the flaws in the early days when the scripts were there. but without someone else's work to prop it up the weaknesses get super obvious, because there's nothing else in front of it to distract or hide the viewer. when I'm checked out of the plot I end up focusing on the little details and that's when issues with character design and worldbuilding get even more obvious than they already were

Exactly. It really can't be stressed enough how much people will forgive as far as visuals go if the story and characters are strong enough.

My favorite example of this will always be Beast Wars. When it first came out, it was visually stunning but the animation looks more dated and every year. And yet everyone remembers it for being one of the most strongly written, most poignant iterations of Transformers that exists.

This is a gold mine. It goes back farther than 500 years and you can search by time period or subject matter as well as the individual words. When I was working on a long fic about 10 years ago, I consulted the online etymological dictionary frequently, but this resource doesn't allow such specific searches, nor can you really search for commonly used phrases, such as the delightful 16th century phrase, "eel skin merchant" or "selling eel skins" which just means a liar or a bullshitter, owing to the unlikelihood that a person would try to sell such a useless and unpleasant item.

A cursory look through it I found so much relevant to my interests. Especially hilarious are words that I think Thomas Cromwell might have coined, or at least been among the first to print for example:

Abbey-lubber: a waster or fool that is in Holy Orders, 1538

Oh, and our friend Erasmus, the lettuce eater, calls out crooked lawyers as "ambidexters" (meaning playing both ends...hmmmm hmmmm). I wonder what crooked, bisexual lawyer he could be talking about?

I was surprised how many words from the early 16th century describing corrupt religious practices:

"Bishop has put his foot in it" or "black as the bishop's foot" was written about by Tyndale (the irony!) anything burned, destroyed, wrecked or just the color "black" in general in reference to the burning of heretics.

There were several specific words for sexual partners being snuck into churches and monasteries in disguise: authem (which had several other meanings, less vulgar, more informal about things in the area around a church, also interestingly could be Yiddish in origin) and doxy, which was specifically a sex worker being snuck into church grounds.

"Winchester goose", was a venereal disease as far as I can tell, not a term for the prostitutes themselves, "goose" was a verb meaning to pinch or bite (still used this way) and Winchester was an area with a lot of sex workers. "He is recovering from a Winchester Goose." Also "goose" as a verb morphed into meaning anal intercourse in early 20th century U.S.

There was also: jarkman-a monk who uses their ability to write Latin to forge documents.

About Mina saying that she's studying for helping Jonathan and everything, it is in her very first appearance. After that, see naturally undergoes development, where she no longer just uses her modern knowledge and skills for helping her husband but in order to tie the entire narrative together. She even learns how to use the phonograph, while Dr Seward is unable to use the typewriter. She's not a static character, none of them are. For example, Jonathan, when he's in the castle he's a naive young man scared, and like Dracula says, has none of "the feelings of the Hunter". And yet, he is the one who becomes the Hunter and slayer of Dracula in the end, full of bravery and opened eyes. Likewise, Mina is not the same person who she was in the very first appearance. Mina undergoes a transformation that I described more extensively earlier. (Speaking of, Jonathan says that he is writing this journal in order to be able to discuss with me not his travels because as we see soon after Mina has a interest in traveling in foreign countries and learning local history. They have a relationship of equals, as K. Winstead argues in Mrs. Harker and Dr. Van Helsing: Dracula, Fin-de-Siecle Feminisms, and the New Wo/Man.)

There is also an important context that Mina herself asks for a period of silence, because she knows that if she learns details about their movements, Dracula will hear about it through her. She is thinking like a leader. Mina not doing much for a while other than report what happens during her hypnosis, she's still far from a passive character, or the only silent one. Jonathan himself barely writes during that period, and Seward stops narrating at all until he gets a pen and paper to the insistence of Van Helsing. Yet they are but sitting ducks. But the very moment that Mina is freed from the psychic connection, she starts writing again extensively. If anything, the men follow her lead, not the other way around. (That's also when she has another chance to show her knowledge to Van Helsing this time in medieval history and criminology.)

About the parts you were addressing where the men leave Mina behind, those are exactly the parts where the narrative punishes the heroes. Mina complying with them is not supposed to be a good thing, because the narrative does not reward this action.

On the other hand, after she's attacked, she does the opposite of complying anymore. For example, when Jonathan protests, or when Van Helsing presses not to do something, she keeps asking questions, she keeps pushing, insisting until she gets the results that she wants. For example, the burial service, which Jonathan does not want to go through, but Mina no longer heeds his emotions/reactions only, but her own needs as well, and so she insists until he relents and performs the ritual. There are several instances like this, where Mina gets her way with persistence, unlike the time when she dutifully allowed the men to keep her away. For example, Jonathan insists in staying in the asylum and protecting Mina and saying that he has made up his mind about it, but then he says that Mina was so insisting that he had no choice but to listen to her and go with the others. The same thing goes for Jonathan, insisting that Mina shouldn't go to the castle of his own torment, which he knows is actual hell, but again he relents to her will.

And speaking of growth, Van Helsing also begins his relationship with Mina by doubting her ability to memorize things because she is a young lady (which results in Mina immediately pranking him with her shorthand skills) and from isolating her for her own good like a patriarch to protect her feminine mind from the Horrors... to being with her at the worst place, Dracula's castle, together just like the slowly succumbing Frodo and the supportive Sam carrying him (Van Helsing carries her too when she's too succumbed to vampirism), together at the gates of hell. And combining their powers, they slay three vampires.

Ask for Lucy being a sexually provocative vampire, it is not an indication that he's being "punished" for any sort of sexuality that she did not display before she died in the first place. At the beginning, the three Weird Sisters we meet display the exact same sexuality, which informs us that it's one of the aspects of the female vampire which is in line with folkoric depictions of them luring their victims. Lucy never transgressed anything at all in life. From the minute that Lucy says yes to Arthur, she never mentions or thinks of the other two ever again, beyond her and Seward's doctor-patient relationship. She's too focused on Arthur and how much dhe loves him.

She did get blood from Quincy Morris, but it was unable to help her heal this time.

Sure there is sexism to be read in the book. Female vampires are evil due to their demonic nature and that demonic nature manifests also in aggressive sexual appearance, because aggressive sexuality in women is deemed corrupt, a common trope even today. But that's the nature of the vampire, not just in this book but in 18th-19th European literature as well as for folkoric tradition in general. However, claiming that Lucy and Mina get punished in any way shape of form for transgressing is too textually unsupported to me. Might as well say that Frodo gets punished for offering himself to carry the Ring, just because he suffers from it.

And yep seeing how much Coppola nerfed and fridged her for the love story is frustrating... Especially when people claim that Mina has more agency in the movie than in the book because she is more sexually liberated (by a man) there. A woman can be sexually expressive and also extremely submissive to her rightful overlord from 400 years ago, ready to abandon modernity and female friendships for his sake. Especially when the male main (Dracula) is given all her character traits, such as the inner torment from vampirism and feeling forsaken by God despite always having been righteous, as she bargains. They had to give all her depth to the main man, instead...

Alright. I'm calling it done before it kills me. This is Second Head. It's an Art Book containing instances of the phrase "second head" in fanfics found on AO3. I'll explain much, MUCH more in the cut.

So when I say 'art book', I mean this is an intrinsic piece. I have no motivations aside from personal amusement and interest in outcome. A lot of money was lost/transmuted into free frustration in this project and I have no claims, obviously. I will prolly be the only person alive to read this.

THAT SAID. I have noticed in my years reading fanfic, there's a few linguistic shibboleths that arise in authors who also have experience in the mines. I think there's not a soul alive who hadn't wandered across a 'ministrations' when reading Narutos oral sexing. There's- Hold on. Here's some pix.

There's an impulse, I think, to in-group even when performing a creative act. A feeling that there are certain ways one Should go about the act, by virtue of seeing it performed that way. Especially so when 'training' at the act is often just Doing. Double Dog Especially when the act is exclusively for oneself with very little oversight. Which is to say, we make what we see and we make what we think we should make. At least, at first.

Now, I've been noticing 'grew a second head' (to insinuate surprise) in fanfic for some time. I've never seen it used Outside of fanfic. (Edit to add: I am not making the argument the phrase is from fanfic. Nor do I Believe it is from fanfic. Jesus Hopping Christ, people. That's not what this project is about.) That may speak to my own bad habits but it got me curious. So a friend and myself downloaded a mirror of AO3 from July of 2024. He did some code- Stuff to scan the mirror for "second head" and of the ~13 million works, ~70k (English) results were returned. That's a rounding error, honestly, but Far FAR more than I expected.

This book is 401 such examples that I personally selected for a variety of reasons. The number itself was arbitrarily chosen. Each page is separate fic, the roughly 300 words around our key phrase.

I don't think repetition or mirroring is a negative thing. I think it's quite charming. Nor do I think it's a sign of a 'bad' artist or 'bad' art. I think it's a signifier of personhood, of belonging, of enthusiasm. Of culture shared and wishing to share. I think it's real sweet. I always smile when I catch a 'grown a second head' in a work.

And it's really fucking funny when it's John Sherlock getting a sloppy toppy. Bless.

Actually, I think this does link in with a wider conversation that I have been thinking for a while Tumblr maybe needs to hear.

There's a common meme on this site now that no one here has any reading comprehension skills. The best one is, of course, the original "No offense but reading comprehension on this site is piss poor/How dare you say we piss on the poor" post, which gave rise to the nickname "pissing-on-the-poor website". There's also the "I like pancakes/How dare you say waffles are terrible" one. Both of these are great, because they're silly jokey ways to show two closely related phenomena that are probably the commonest ways to fail a reading comprehension check.

The first is someone reading certain catchphrases or buzzwords in the post, and based on their own biases or prior experiences or whatever else, their brain simply fills in what it reckons the poster is saying on the topic. Instead of reading the rest of the sentence and digesting it, the reader then just uses their assumption as the interpretation, and reacts to that.

The second is closely related, because it also uses biases and prior experiences to to interpret the post, but rather than ignoring what the OP is actually saying, it instead performs a series of gymnastic leaps to construct a whole new assertion on the OP's behalf that simply isn't there.

There's also a third, of course; that one is people being so eager to feel smug and superior over someone they perceive as Bad that they wilfully assume the OP is stupid or being serious when they're actually joking. And if the reader hadn't been so blinded by their desire to get to look down on someone, they'd have seen the very obvious tells, sometimes even including sentences like "Obviously this is a joke." (I think we have all seen examples of these. Also, in a bid to avoid as many reading comprehension fails here as possible, this does not include misunderstandings borne entirely of neurodiverse struggles to parse intentions; but, neurodiverse people are just as likely as neurotypicals to have ego play a part in their misinterpretation of others, and that is what this point is about.)

And the thing is... actually, we are all capable of any of these. I imagine a sizable chunk of people reading until this point were probably thinking "Lol, yeah, people are so stupid," but na, nage, I'm not having that. Literally everyone does these sometimes. And it becomes a particular risk when the topic under discussion is something that might brush against an issue that is a pressure point for you, like a social justice talking point that you are forever having to argue with internet strangers about, for example. Your brain holds schemas! And sometimes it likes to pattern match things before it deigns to tell you about its findings! And that can hit you right in the emotions, which if they are strong enough, really can shut down all rational thought.

But. This brings me to the real point of the post.

Because the thing is, we have all saddled up and gone to war under these conditions, or at the very least been strongly tempted to. And a vital skill that literally everyone has to learn, sooner or later, is:

Before you hit 'reply', double check the post to make sure you fucking understood it.

And that does not mean "simply re-read, confirm your bias, carry on." It means, "Is it possible to read this post from the point of view of someone who doesn't intend it the way I've taken it? If I put myself in the shoes of an innocent, could they still have written these words? Is there another interpretation for these phrases?"

And you do have to do this step. You simply do have to. Because if your desire is to 'clap back' and call someone a gargling knobskin made of garbage, fuck me sideways but you must see that it is imperative that you check if they actually deserve that kind of treatment first. You cannot spend your time claiming that we must all choose to be kind and then not bother doing your due diligence before screaming a person's various and assorted bigotries at them. If you misread it, and they were innocent - you are the raging aggressive cunt in this situation.

It does not matter that you reacted from an emotional place of normally having to defend yourself either, by the way. Sure, that makes the quality of your human soul better than that of the average Redditor who just enjoys anonymously hurting people, I guess? But it's also irrelevant. If you messaged someone and called them a misogynist because you performed several mental somersaults and landed on your own sore spot when they meant no such thing, you are the attacker. You owe them an apology. And yeah, sure, you can explain your over-reaction as the product of your normal experiences if you like, but that is only an explanation, not an excuse. You are still the asshole here. You still need to apologise and mean it.

And you could have avoided it if you'd done that due diligence, as you should have. If you're going to take a swing, make sure it's the right target. This was once described to me as donkey people - they don't think, they just kick. This is admittedly a little unkind to donkeys, who always do their due diligence, but I feel it's an apt metaphor.

TL;DR: If you feel moved to angrily reply to something, first make sure you've interpreted it right. Don't be a donkey person. And if you ask for clarification, people are innocent until proven guilty. Ask nicely. If they are a bigot, you can then smelt them for parts.

what do you mean reverse an overdose? How is that possible?

So, in my most recent post where I was talking about reversing overdoses, I was talking about Narcan (naloxone).

Narcan is a medicine that can reverse opioid overdoses. It works on any opioids, including fentanyl, heroin, oxy, vicodin, etc. It isn't effective in reversing other kinds of drug overdoses, but would still work to reduce an overdose if your coke has fent in it, for example. It functions by blocking the opioid receptors in your brain and helps restore breathing. Narcan is not a dangerous medication, and it is not harmful to your brain, which means you can be dosed multiple times without increasing harm to your body. The experience of being Narcaned can be pretty fucking shitty, because it basically puts your body in withdrawal super super fast, and you might experience some of the effects of withdrawal like vomiting, body aches and chills, fatigue, etc. But there are not other harmful side effects outside of that. Narcan is safe to give to people of all ages, including children.

Narcan comes in both an nasal spray and intramuscular injections, but it's usually easier to get access to nasal spray. This is what Narcan looks like:

How to Use Narcan

To administer Narcan, you first need to identify if someone is overdosing. Signs of an opioid overdose can be when someone is unconscious, unresponsive, not breathing or slowly breathing, no pulse or erratic pulse, has pinpoint pupils, and/or has blue lips.

If you see some of these things and think that someone is overdosing, the next step is to check for responsiveness. You can do this by loudly calling the person's name, saying that you are going to Narcan them, gently shaking them, and by performing a sternum rub, which is where you rub your knuckles into the place in someone's chest where their ribs meet. If they're breathing and they respond, even if it's just making noises in response to you or physically pushing your hands away, that can be a sign that you don't need to administer Narcan right away. Still, in that case, it's a really good idea to stay with that person in case that changes. If, and only if, the person is completely unresponsive, you should administer Narcan.

Once you've determined that someone is unresponsive and overdosing, the next step is actually administering Narcan. Narcan comes in packs of two nasal sprays. Take the first nasal spray out of the box, put the nozzle in the person's nose, and press the plunger. If the person is still not responsive after 2-3 minutes, take the other nasal spray out of the box and give them another dose. I try to use the lowest number of doses possible to try to reduce the withdrawal experience, and I stop giving Narcan once someone is breathing and responsive. If they still are not responsive or breathing, and you know how to give rescue breaths, you can start administering rescue breaths. If you have to step away for any reason, turn the person on their side in the recovery position first.

After someone's overdose is reversed, it's really important that whenever possible, someone stays with them for at least an hour afterwards. Narcan is active in the body for about 30-90 minutes, so depending on what someone's original amount of opioids was, they might start overdosing again and need you to give them Narcan again. This is also why it can be important to try not to use again right away, which is really fucking shitty when you're trying to use cause you don't want to be sick, but unfortunately using right away can also put you at risk of overdosing again. When people come back after getting Narcaned, it can be a pretty disorienting and uncomfortable experience. You might not know who Narcaned you or why they're in your space, might be feeling really fucking shitty because of withdrawal, and might want to be left alone. If you've just Narcaned someone, introduce yourself and explain that you just gave them Narcan, listen to what they tell you, empathize with their feelings, respect people's boundaries, and give them space if they ask for it. Understand that they're probably feeling pretty fucking shitty in their body, that it fucking sucks when your high gets ruined, and they (justifiably) might not feel happy about the fact that you Narcaned them.

Pretty much all Narcan trainings will tell you that it's "recommended" to always call 911, but we all know that this is not always actually possible in a lot of situations and that cops always fucking make the situation worse. My policy is that I always, always ask for consent before calling 911 and if someone says no, then we brainstorm other ways of keeping safe and we don't fucking call the cops. If there's a situation where I do need to call 911, I never tell the operator that someone overdosed, because that usually gets them to send out the cops alongside ambulance, which can cause delays to care, put a lot of people at risk, and also put people, including bystanders, in legal danger. If I have to call 911, I say that my friend has collapsed/fainted/isn't breathing and keep it more vague, and when paramedics actually arrive on the scene, that's when I tell them more information about the overdose, what drugs someone took, and how many times I've administered Narcan.

You can get free Narcan a lot of places. Next Distro has resources for getting free Narcan by mail for almost every state. If there's harm reduction orgs in your area, they will have free Narcan. There's also a lot of Department of Health programs for free Narcan. Most pharmacies now also have Narcan available over the counter, but that's usually really fucking expensive and often pretty hard to shoplift cause they keep locking it up.

Even if you don't use drugs and you think that your loved ones don't use drugs, it's super important to have Narcan as a part of your first aid kit and learn how to use it. You never know when you're going to need to use it, and it's super good to be prepared ahead of time, in case your friend/family/neighbor/classmate/coworker ends up overdosing while you're there. Or in case you end up overdosing and having Narcan on you means that bystanders can help support you through it.

They gave me an incredible amount of freedom. I didn't want Beast to be a cartoon character. I played it as though I were doing a Broadway show. As if this was a living person. And I wanted him to be funny. By funny, I don't mean shtick or one-liners. I am talking about real comedy. When real comedy works, and is truthful, especially with the Beast, it comes out of the fact that he is so pathetic. For some reason, I really understood that. Ha! Because of that, they gave me a lot of leeway. [x]

My first audition was recorded on, of all things, a Sony Walkman. As a musician, I had branched out into recording engineer and loved to play with sound. When I saw the Sony Walkman I knew it had a little condenser microphone in it, and if I were to get too loud, the automatic compressor and built-in limiter would 'squash' the voice— and there would be very little dynamic range to the performance. I did a quick assessment and wondered how many people who had come in to audition for the part were making that error: playing the Beast with overwhelming decibels, compressing the vocal waveforms. I decided to give the Beast 'range.' Because of my microphone technique, and an understanding of who I wanted Beast to be, they kept asking me to come back and read different dialogue. After my fifth audition, Jeffrey Katzenberg the hands-on guardian of the film, said the part was mine…

Beauty and the Beast was so refreshingly fun and inventively creative to work on that I couldn't wait to try new approaches to every line of dialogue. Don Hahn is one of the best creative producers I have ever worked with. The two young directors, Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, were fantastic and their enthusiasm was contagious. I not only was allowed to improvise, but they encouraged it. It never entered my mind that I was playing an animated creature. I understood the torment that Beast was going through: he felt ugly; had a horrible opinion of himself, and had a trigger-temper. Those are things that, if done right, are the perfect ingredients for comedy. Painful and pathetic comedy— but honest. The kind of comedy I understood...

In the feature world of Disney animation, the actors always recorded their dialogue alone in a big studio, with only a microphone and the faint images of the producers, writers, directors and engineer through a double-paned set of acoustic glass. Paige O'Hara and I became good friends; it was her idea that for certain very intimate scenes, such as when Beast is dying, we record together. We were able to play these scenes with an honest conviction that is often absent in the voice-over world...

The success of this film was the culmination of a team effort but I must say, the honors go to the animators— and for me (Beast), that's Glen Keane — and to Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. This was the perfect example of a crew who 'cared'. And the final results (every frame) of the film represent that sentiment. [x]
