But because of that small detail, I was interested, and actually bought Story of Seasons in May of 2015, and I didn't regret it at all. I also liked that I could have twins as well, and that seems rare in these games.
#STORY OF SEASONS ROM EUMPARADISE UPGRADE#
Yes, I like that they at least added that despite that it wasn't fully animated with the characters doing more in their portraits, way better than a still photo), an awesome mountain town (my friend and I use Oak Tree Town for our roleplays that are based in the SOS location), nice music for different seasons and events, swimming (something Trio of Towns for some reason doesn't have), customization which I can still appreciate despite that Trio of Towns did seem to upgrade that since it has more home and outfit customization, and it's where I discovered who I feel might just be my permanent favourite bachelor of all HM/SOS/RF titles as well. It has a lot of nostalgia I had great memories playing it and spent a lot of time drawing pictures to post with the screenshots before Miiverse shut down so I developed a love for a fan pairing and also came up with an SOS themed story for them due to playing it, it had a feeling I liked with a nice but sad story, beautiful characters both a very great selection of bachelors and bachelorettes and even the townsfolk, a nice realistic or mature themed colour palette for the characters, blinking animation (Lol What. It's kind of hard to choose orders, but the original Story of Seasons 3DS title is my favourite. The first two are the only 3DS games I listed. Here, you will be able to find the most popular Rom Games such as: Super Mario or Pokemon.Story of Seasons (2015), then Trio of Towns and maybe SOS: FOMT.

Farmer Character Intro or something idk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one is gonna be long because when it comes to OC, I have a ton of stuff I like to tell—and I just happen to be a huge fan of the character design process and just general art stuff.
Yeah, it's probably a little late to do this but bear with me, I only got to try Story of Seasons this year because of the 3DS eShop discontinuation making me pick up my 3DS to play new games I haven't thought of playing before outside my Pokemons and Fire Emblems (and dipping into homebrew here and there too; hence I found out the True Love mod for the game), and I swear I was NOT expecting to get into it—I'm not the type to really like this type of stuff... Then I realized that I already sunk 99 hours of my life into it, and shocker: I'm into this type of games.
So here we are, I got the brainworms and so, trio of dumbasses was made, to dump my dumb little art for it... And to test the brushes I download from Clip Studio Assets but never use because I already have the ones I go to for my usual style but still download because there's something in my ape brain that gives me dopamine when downloading brushes.
But enough of me, you're here for me OC, so let me introduce you to my farmer, Shinya. I'll just be going over what I wrote on my notes the past few weeks, so yeah—overall design thoughts, outfits, personality, a bit of background lore, etc. It's probably a bit of a read so brace yourselves. (Also feel free to talk to me if anyone wants to do art or OC content together, I'm shy but yes)
I tried to make him as accurate to the in-game model (emphasis on the tried). It should be indicated somewhere there what hairstyles I used were. And for the outfits, well, I initially just went with Work Clothes and Suspenders because it was one of the few outfits I had, then for the seasonal outfits I just thought "Well, if he's from the city, then maybe he has more modern clothes with him" HAHAHA, though I do want to have a specific outfit to go to for every season, I think that's just cool. Needless to say, Shinya's image color is Light Red.
Shinya's around 24 years old around the time he starts his farm (which I named Sauce Farm, for some reason), and as to explain how he has red hair while the rest of his known family's hair color is blonde/sandy brown, he's actually Daryl's child from a previous marriage. He pursues his dream to become a farmer to spite his father, who is reluctant to let him be one, to the point that he declined a lucrative job offer just to show him that he's not joking around when he says he says he wants to open a farm, causing Daryl to allow him to experience the farming life. Yes, he's a college graduate and he has a degree in Engineering.
An addition I added (according to my notes I'm taking all these from), is that he has a twin sister (my head's equivalent to Holly/Nanami) who's away from home herself, pursuing a Masters, who is pen pals with Kasumi, for some reason.
Also, Shinya used to be a delinquent when he was younger, though he seems to have softened over time. He's married to Ford and while a loving husband, is willing to make a few jokes at the latter's expense, usually around his attempts to be affectionate such as the time he lost a contest, Ford told him to "jump in his arms", flustering Shinya for a little before he bursts into laugher.
Personality-wise, I imagine Shinya to be a chill guy that likes to joke around and liven up the mood; depending on who he's with, he's either the straight man or the funny man of the group. Sometimes he can come off as rude or so, probably, but he usually means well; and sometimes he uses his fists to show gratitude too. He's a reliable person, I imagine, who uses his background in engineering to improve the three towns' infrastructure, beginning with South Westown's bridge. He's someone that probably wants everything to go well, or better, as planned so as to help him gain his father's approval, and will get sad or upset when things don't go his way or when he loses, though he would probably hide it under a smile, or something. I see him as someone who would do reckless and irrational decisions under extreme stress or possibly overwork himself, or at least stretch himself thin.
He enjoys fishing, he also likes horseback riding with his horse, Twi, whom he always rides when visiting the towns and doing part-time jobs. And though he still raises plants, ever since he was able to utilize Westown's mining nodes, he's spent more time mining than growing crops.
Despite Ford being a bad cook, Shinya seems to genuinely love his husband's cooking.

Alright I just started playing Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town and I have thoughts, granted I’m only just starting because it came out on March 26th in Australia and I could only pick it up on the 27th so these are really just first impressions rather than anything else.
Pros:
- I really like the smaller things they’ve done like;
- They added how many plots of land a watering can can water instead of a bar
- They’ve added a ‘health’ bar to trees and rocks so I don’t have to guess how many swings it’ll take to take it down
- There’s a lot to do right out the gate (Fishing can be opened on day one, farming can be done on the third day, mining is opened right out the gate, cooking is open when you upgrade your house for the first time which I did on my fourth day and it’s really easy to get your coop up and running which opens up animal farming), it can get kinda overwhelming but it’s always better to have too much to do in a game than not enough
- Really the only character I really like is Linh (and that might just be because I'm half Viet)
- Actually Reina is pretty cute as well
- And Iori
- I love that mining is back especially since after Trio of Towns mining was just sad and I wasn't sure it was staying after Friends of Mineral Town
- Fishing was pretty confusing at first but I actually really like it
- The character creator was cute and pretty fun
- I did also like how in the character creator you choose your ‘Body type’ and ‘stance’ then you choose if you’re a ‘granddaughter’ or ‘grandson’. It would have also been awesome if you could choose ‘grandchild’ or ‘grandthem’ but we’re getting there
- GAY MARRIAGE IS HERE TO STAY
Cons:
- Why did they get rid of the portraits? It makes conversations with everyone feel so impersonal
- I think they were trying to go for what the Wii games did but the problem is that the camera doesn't really work for it, what I mean is that the camera will zoom in for the conversation but like half the time it gets stuck on the building or a tree
- And as a consequence to getting rid of the portraits I now have to manually check the romance options heart level rather than just have to look at what colour their heart is
- No seriously I really don’t like that I can’t look at a portrait of them especially since this has quite literally been in these games since the very first one in the series (the only ones that don’t have portraits are the Wii games which I did really like but the camera actually changed to focus on the characters faces and I feel like the 3D models of PoOT just aren't really all that good, like they’re fine but definitely not the best)
- They got rid of the mini map and it’s a bitch to get to in the menu and as a consequence I don’t know where I am, where anyone else is or where anything is in general
- Unpopular opinion but I don’t really like when they bring back previous bachelors and bachelorettes as marriage options again because then I get sad imagining that Ludas or Amir got sick of my farmer, divorced them and then abandoned their kid. I do like it when like in Island of Happiness Karen and Popori show up for a vacation for a season.
- I don't really understand the need for a lumber maker, in the old game all you had to do is hit wood with an axe, now you chop down the tree and use 20 logs to make a lumber maker which takes 2 hours to use and you can only make one lumber piece at a time so you have to go back and refill the maker
- The conversion of wood to lumber makes no sense to me 3 wood = 1 lumber is just dumb. 5 ores = 1 ingot makes sense to me but the lumber makes no sense
- I don't really get why they made the museum a thing (it kinda just feels like they’re ripping off Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing)
- The frame rate is just awful and drops constantly
- None of the characters really feel all that interesting to me
- I literally couldn’t care less about most of the bachelors and bachelorettes, they all feel so vanilla and boring (read: dull as dishwater). Even when I first saw the concept arts for them I literally couldn’t make a choice because I didn’t care about any of them (I’ll probably change my mind later once I get to know them better but not a good first impressions) that being said I’ll probably go for Iori, Linh or Reina because they look the most interesting
- It’s a bit weird I can’t use my DLC outfits right when I get access to my dresser but instead have to wait until the boutique gets into town to pick up my outfits (At least I don’t have to also in-game pay for them).
- The loading screens are weird as fuck, it’s literally sometimes just a close up of the mayors nose.
- The game feels weirdly grindy like more so then usual in a farming sim
That’s really all I can think of for now, I’ve heard that they’ll be patching in more dialogue for the characters and I hope that the portraits come with it but I kinda doubt it. And yes I am still very upset about the portraits AND the lack of a mini map.
Feel free to add anything here but I honestly doubt anyone else is going to read this.

Ooh nooo I did put animal crossing! I feel so dumb now I meant harvest moon. Sorry about that!
that’s fine! considering your mom wants one for her DS, i’m going to list the DS games available for Harvest Moon and offer my two cents on them since the DS games are the ones i have the most experience with lol so you’re in luck
to add another note, keep in mind that Harvest Moon has rebranded as Story of Seasons, so SoS is the same HM we all know and love; Natsume took the Harvest Moon title and released a bunch of horrible games to catch peoples’ interest with the familiar title, so the title shifts in this list. i only used the name Harvest Moon when discussing the games out of familiarity/force of habit; later on down this list, the title changes. i’m also adding the 3DS games.
i’ll link you to the games as well so you can go over them yourself/she can check them out herself to see what she’d prefer. i wrote a lot but not nearly enough to cover the controls/functions/story line/overall goal/townspeople in each game.
1) Harvest Moon DS/Harvest Moon DS Cute. considering one of your mom’s favorite HM games are AnWL, i think she’ll like this the best; the game is set in Forget-Me-Not-Valley with a huge amount of characters from AnWL! in DS, you can only play as Jack/Pete. in DS Cute, you can choose to play as either Claire or Pony/Jill. DS/DS Cute is probably one of my favorite title games because it’s so similar to AWL/AnWL, so i think she’d really enjoy this one. i don’t have much to say on the story/goal of the game since it’s basically AWL/AnWL for a DS. out of all the games i go over here, i think she’ll like this one the best.
2) Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness/Harvest Moon: Sunshine Islands. these two are very similar to Tree of Tranquility/Animal Parade because they’re essentially the same game with major differences. in IoH, the player character is washed up on a new island during a horrible shipwreck after a violent storm/lightning strike and sea and never makes whatever their original destination was; those who survived the crash make a new life on the island they washed up on (it sounds bleak but i promise it’s not).
however, in SI, the MC sails to SI for a new life and all of the villagers have an established life there. the two games have different goals and slightly tweaked characters, but are functionally relatively the same, with SI adding in more marriage candidates. this series is also one of my favorites, but one thing to add is that the art is very chibi-fied. not sure if your mom will mind it, but it kind of bugged me at times. i personally prefer SI.
3) Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar. this was one of my first HM games, and it’s very cute and charming; the art, however, is more cutesy than the previous titles, so at times it kind of feels like everyone is a baby lol. the game is a little different from usual - there’s no shipping bin, because the goal is to sell everything you produce at a bazaar that’s held once a week (or at a shop in town if you don’t want to wait that long). you don’t mine in this game either, since you buy ore in shops or find them in rocks during winter. overall, it’s a cute game, but maybe not the most memorable? i remember enjoying it a lot, but i can’t remember that much about it. >_> it’s one of the more cutesy games as opposed to the little bits of realism/somberness in AWL/AnWL
i’m skipping Puzzle de Harvest Moon/Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming because neither of them are farming simulators, they’re puzzle/matching games
4) Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns. one of my favorite games! you play as a farmer starting in one of two towns situated on either side of a mountain, with a blocked tunnel connecting them. your goal is to bring the two towns together again through cooking festivals, which will unblock the tunnel; until then, you travel between the towns by climbing the mountain, which is great for foraging but eats up some time in your day. one town is focused on farming crops, the other is focused on farming livestock; you can do both in either town, but your farm will be devoted more to main export of either town. for example, in Konohana has a lot of fields for crops and a small barn. it’s the opposite in Bluebell.
your residency in one town isn’t permanent, though; i think at the end of every season you can choose if you want to move to the other town and you can keep doing that indefinitely. another addition to the game is dating, where you go on dates with marriage candidates rather than just leveling hearts and proposing! it brings a tiny bit more realism into the romance lol. this game is available for 3DS as well.
5) the Rune Factory games. i haven’t played a lot of RF (only 4 lol ._.) but they’re all titled as fantasy Harvest Moons, meaning you have a farm and farming is a major focus, but there’s also magic and elves and fighting monsters in dungeons to get good loot! RF title games for the DS are Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon, Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon, and Rune Factory 3: A Fantasy Harvest Moon. Rune Factory 4 is a 3DS title and the only one i’ve played but i liked it a lot and intend to play the other titles!
i don’t have too much to say on the series since i haven’t played a lot, but i really enjoyed RF4! the games are much more story driven than Harvest Moon, which i found really fun since it felt like i had more of a goal than just “farm for the town”. i will add though that i loved all of the bachelorettes(minus Amber)/bachelors up until gearing toward proposing, because a lot of their Marriage Events suddenly had like...weird stuff? i won’t spoil anything but suddenly things like possessiveness/jealousy/weird unhealthy relationship stuff came up and i was like WHOA WHAT WHERE IS THIS COMING FROM O_O because it was all SO drastically different from everything else up to that point. i didn’t romance any of the bachelors but it was there for the bachelorettes so idk if it’s the same.
there are more HM games, but these next ones are for 3DS. i’m not sure if your mom has a 3DS (i know u said DS but i call my 3DS a DS all the time so idk if it’s the same thing for you or not >_>), so i’m adding these next titles because i’m on a roll, but keep that in mind! i will also add that, with your mom’s preference in her favorite games, she’d probably enjoy the games i listed above waaaaaay more than these next ones, since that’s how i feel too.
1) Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning. this is the title where things feel... very different. i didn’t really enjoy it that much, if i’m being honest, because it brought in a weird focus away from farming where you reorganize the town and build new buildings and stuff. it felt a lot like the sims, minus making characters. this is the first title where you can customize the player character though! which i love! since your mom’s favorite games are AnWL and Animal Parade and MY favorite games are AnWL and Animal Parade and i didn’t enjoy this game much, she probably won’t either. the tutorial stage is also really, REALLY, horrifically long -- it stretches over a week in-game time of just basically doing nothing. most of the characters are REAL charming though imo, and they lose the cutesy chibi art which i was really happy about. the art and characters made me stick through the gameplay since i enjoyed them. they also brought in older characters and renewed their designs; i loooooved Witch Princess and Amir in this game so much i was so stoked to unlock them. but overall yeah one of my least favorite titles in the series since it brought so much focus away from farming to me and while characters/romance are nice, a huge draw TO the HM games is the farming
2) Story of Seasons. first game to be hit with the rebrand from Harvest Moon! any game after this was released (FEB 27 2014 in Japan) with the title of Harvest Moon is NOT Harvest Moon anymore! it’s Natsume up to their dirty tricks of using a great brand and stealing the name to release bad games.
anyway, SoS was... pleasant! i enjoyed it. it didn’t stick with me like the older games, though. but i loooved the art and the town, and the villagers were charming. you compete with other farmers in town for certain fields located in different places, all of which are best suited for certain kinds of crops. i liked the rival aspect, but it is very different from older HM titles. you can also select the difficulty to play in either Veteran mode or Seedling mode; i recommend Seedling mode, both because prices aren’t as high and because HM (to me) is a game to relax and have fun farming, and Veteran mode is just stressful.
3) Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns. i love this one. (well, for the most part). this is the first game that introduces your family! you start off as a young adult still living at home with your mother, father, and younger sister, and decide to move out and become a farmer. your father is furious at this idea but you are eventually set to live in the same town as your Uncle Frank, who is a farmer, to measure your farming ability. if by the end of three years, you haven’t proven to your father than you have what it takes to be a farmer, you’re leaving the town forever. the bleakness reminded me a lot of AnWL, for some reason; i loved the aspect of your father being strict and hard on you since it felt a little bit more somber than the super cute, super peppy titles in the series of recent years.
that’s where the bleakness ends, tho. i will say that, despite loving this game and the characters, i really, REALLY hate the three-town system. you start off on your farm to three crossroads that lead to three different towns that all unlock by summer in your first year. and yes, it’s fun! the different towns yield different crops and resources. but it doesn’t feel at all like Harvest Moon to me. it feels way bigger and with way more things to do. it also makes days a LOT longer, since you run from all of the towns to complete errands in part-time jobs. it needs more of your focus than other games. i haven’t finished the game yet, and while i love it, i love it separately from other HM titles. it doesn’t hook me in the way the older titles did, which i think is because of the modernity of it with three different towns and being bigger and and having such consistently bright colors as opposed to one small town and muted color scheme of, for example, AWL. it feels, like ANB, very different from the vibe Harvest Moon usually gives you. idk how to describe it. i feel like this game exists in a separate niche.
i like how your family feels more real in it, though; they periodically send you letters and visit you. it really feels like you had a life before coming to the town(s), rather than starting off as a blank slate at the beginning of the game.
anyway i hope that helped! lmk if you need any clarification or want to go over other things or want any other recommendations. i hope ur mom finds a game she likes! ^_^

Animation Reviews: The Dragon Prince
Hello again lovelies. T’is once again I. Don’t know why I’m pumping these out so fast except that I find them to be really relaxing for me. Which is probably why they are so terrible and if you can read my ramblings with anything resembling enjoyment you are a better person than I am. Anyway...the next show that I want to talk about is The Dragon Prince, a show that has really blown up in popularity and deservedly so. Once again I’m going to try to avoid spoilers as much as possible because I feel everybody should see these shows and judge them for themselves. Anyhoo, here we goooooo!
Characters: This is a major strength of this show right away, especially for me. It’s pretty much common knowledge at this point but the creator of The Dragon Prince was one of the head writers for Avatar the Last Airbender and boy does it show. Just to be clear, I mean that in the best possible way. The Dragon Prince has a huge cast that it juggles very well. To try to keep this section under control I will just be focusing on what could be considered the main characters but know that all the characters in this show, from the mains to the sides to the background, all give the impression of being well rounded and fully realized. So with that out of the way, onto this mess of a section. The main trio Callum, Ezran, and Rayla work off of each other beautifully and balance each other out. But what is most fun to watch is how they both do, and don’t, fit into stereotypical roles. Ezran (the crown prince of one of the Human Kingdoms) is the heart of the group and also, one could argue, the wisdom. Despite his young age he is adept at reading people’s characters and makes his judgements on that rather than the biases of the world in which they live. His decision to trust people and his compassion drives the story forward and it is his actions that get the ball rolling. Watching his interactions with his older brother Callum will also give you a case of the feels. Once again, sibling relationship done right. Rayla, the muscle, uses her combat (read: awesome elf assassin) prowess to get the group out of many a tight spot. But that’s not all Rayla is. Her sense of humor is sarcastic and witty and she is the source of both the most heartbreaking and side-splitting moments in the show. I don’t think I can oversell what a complex character she is and how much she will steal your heart. As for Callum, oh sweetie. I suppose if you had to label him, he would be the brains of the group, but as with all these characters, he is so much more than that. Awkward and unsure of himself, he is a character who doesn’t know what he has to offer, while unwittingly possessing powerful potential. I just…*wipes tears from my eyes*... love characters like this. He is also a bit of a goof and his back and forth with Rayla drives both the humor and their character development. All of the characters in The Dragon Prince are like this though. Although you can technically slot them into character tropes, they are really much more than their assigned role. They are complex is what I’m getting at. The other main characters to note are Soren, Claudia, Viren, and King Harrow. Soren and Claudia are a brother and sister duo who are truly a joy to watch. Their popularity is enormous thanks to their complex relationship with each other, the wildly different relationship they each have with their father Viren, and the fact that they are giant walking memes. Soren is probably the closest thing the show has to the stereotypical “all muscle but no brains” character type. But as I keep saying over and over again, there is more to him than that. He has his moments of sweetness, protectiveness, and an incredibly relatable moment of stress-eating that made me absolutely fall in love with him. Claudia is a mage in training, frighteningly powerful but goofy and more than a bit spacy. Together they are a dream team of hilarity and, for all you fanfic writers out there, tons of unexplored potential angst. Ugh. I could go on about them all day but I suppose I should try to get to a few more characters before I head to story town as this section is already becoming more of a train wreck than I could have ever imagined. Viren is the character everyone loves to hate, but once again as with all these characters, I feel that there is more to him than meets the eye. That’s all I’ll say about him at the moment as I don’t want to get into spoilers. King Harrow is a fantastic father to Ezran and Callum, with his relationship with the latter producing some most excellent feels. I’m going to group the last characters together even though they each deserve their own spot simply because The Dragon Prince has a huge cast (as stated previously) that are all, say it with me now, really complex. Aunt Amaya and Gren are two notable standouts of the side cast, as is Runaan, the stoic but lovable leader of the Moon Elves. But this section is taking up way more space than I was originally anticipating so let me just leave you with this: all the characters in The Dragon Prince are fun and ~complex~ with plenty to talk about with each of them and enough of them for everyone to find a favorite (or a dozen favorites in my case).
Story: The world of The Dragon Prince is very high fantasy, what with all the elves and dragons and magical creatures running amok. That said, it does do a few new things with this very familiar setting. First of all, the conflict driving the plot and world of Xadia and the Human Kingdoms is surprisingly nuanced for a kid’s show. Not too surprising when you remember that it’s from the same writers as ATLA, but even in that show there were very clear “good guys” and “bad guys”, especially in the beginning. In TDP (I’m getting tired of typing The Dragon Prince over and over again) however, who the “good guy” is and the “bad guy” is muddled. The humans do a bad thing and the elves and dragons do bad things in return. No one is really the unambiguous good guy or bad guy which leads to both sides feeling justified in doing terrible things to each other. It’s messy and all too real. Which is why it is so important that our main trio (two humans and an elf) are the ones who try to right a wrong together, in order to demonstrate that peace and cooperation can be attained and that war is not always a foregone conclusion. It’s not smooth or easy and there is still much to reckon with on both sides, but there is hope for the future. So, with that little preamble out of the way, what is the story of TDP? It is essentially a retrieval mission to get the titular dragon prince back to his mother after he was thought to have been assassinated but was instead kidnapped by the humans. This doesn’t seem like much of a plot, but this allows for the world of TDP to come to life in the form of the places and people met along this journey. I don’t want to get into spoilers so I won’t say much more about the plot for the time being. Just know that sometimes simplicity can lead to the most ~complex~ storylines and character development. Now, it is time to move onto what could be considered the elephant in the room when talking about TDP.
Animation and Character Design: Sooo….the character designs in TDP are actually quite lovely. Everyone has a distinctive design and color palette. The colors in particular have special meaning to the characters and are a good showcase of both their personalities and where their loyalties lie (look at Callum for an example of this, his mixture of reds and blues is quite thematic about how he feels out of place in this world as well as giving a little nod to the politics of the Human Kingdoms as well). The backgrounds also deserve a quick shout-out. They are beautifully detailed and a real treat to the eye. As for the animation, well, it appears to be rather hit or miss with people. I admit that I did not care for the animation until about halfway through my first time watching (yes, I am a huge nerd and have seen the show three times and counting) because by that point I was so engrossed in the story and characters that the animation hiccups no longer mattered to me. On my second watch, I didn’t have any problems with the animation at all, most likely because I was used to it at that point. And really... it’s not that bad. Sure, it could be smoother in some places, but it is overall serviceable and even glorious in some places. The action scenes are particularly well served by the animation. And this is coming from someone who has expressed her displeasure with 3D or 2.5D animation that tries to look like 2D in the past. Plus, if it bothers you too much, but you liked everything else, the creators have gone out and said that they are going to work hard on making the animation smoother next season. So yeah. I guess that about covers it. I feel like I only barely touched the surface with this show. Especially with the characters and all their **~~complexity~~**. I highly recommend this show if you are a fan of ATLA, enjoy fantasy, enjoy adventure shows, enjoy fun character writing, and enjoy world-building. The Dragon Prince pairs nicely with some popcorn and soda or other such snacks and is available on Netflix.

Live Your Best Farm Life with Doraemon: Story of Seasons!
At some point in their lives, every gamer has known the calm of Harvest Moon. There's something soothing about restoring a run-down farm to its former glory, working your way up from five plots of turnips to a self-sustaining farm and a family with two babies. Now localized as Story of Seasons, the series continues to bring out new iterations of itself, the second-to-latest being 2016's Trio of Towns.
This year, MARVELOUS and BANDAI NAMCO teamed up with the creators of the long-running children's anime and manga series Doraemon to take everyone's favorite lazy kid and robot cat on an adventure into the world of 6 am starts and daily responsibilities. The game is now available to bring some farming goodness to your autumn. So, how is it? The simple answer: it's definitely a Story of Seasons game. And if that's what you want, you'll enjoy it.
For those not familiar with Doraemon, this would be the equivalent of Sesame Street or a similarly seasoned children's show crossing over with the farming game. These are characters the target audience would have known since childhood, and their children (or parents!) as well. Noby is a typical grade-schooler who would rather read comics than do chores or homework, and Doraemon is his earless robo-cat friend from the future. Whenever Noby wants (or doesn't want) something, Doraemon finds a futuristic device in his dimensional pocket for the purpose, and hijinks ensue.
In the case of Doraemon: Story of Seasons, Noby is more interested in napping than doing his summer homework. But that changes when he and Doraemon discover a strange, swirly seed. The duo and their friends Sue, Sneech, and Big G (yep, they're localized) plant the seed on a mountain and watch it grow into a massive tree almost instantly. The tree offers shelter when a storm comes... but it also takes off from terra firma and lifts them into an alternate dimension, with Doraemon's gadgets scattering uselessly.
This sets the stage for the gang's agricultural adventures in Natura, the sort of quaint European-inspired town you tend to find yourself in in any Story of Seasons game. There's a bit of scene-setting, the gang divides up across the town's various shops, and then... you get your farm! After that, well, it's sort of business as usual for Story of Seasons.
That's the big first thing to note: once you're past the introduction, the game essentially becomes a Doraemon re-skin of the franchise. There are a few things here and there to keep the crossover element alive: for example, you can find Doraemon's gadgets around town. Some will help your productivity, while others are just there for fun (such as the "What If?" Machine, which becomes your cut scene replay function). With your buddies spread out across town—Sue at the clinic, Doraemon handling shipments, and so on—you can also have conversations with familiar characters. But the crossover content is almost entirely front-loaded. This is a Story of Seasons game with a Doraemon paint job.
That said, visually it is really a lovely game. Natura has a dreamy, watercolor aesthetic to it. The 3D sprites don't blend with it exactly, but do a surprisingly good job of fitting in. That, mixed with the game's many NPCs drawn in a Doraemon-esque style, makes for a relaxing look and feel.
Like any Story of Seasons game (and variants like Stardew Valley), Doraemon: Story of Seasons has a lot to do—in a couple of ways. Yes, there's a lot out there in the game world. There's a mine you can progress down, friendship meters to fill up, and your typical side tasks like fishing and attending festivals. And of course, later in-game years will introduce new characters and mysteries. But there's also a lot to do to get started. For the few that may be coming to this game via Doraemon rather than Story of Seasons, that may be a little daunting at first. Expert farmers will likely be ready with their hammers and axes and turnip seeds, though; and fortunately, learning how to farm is the one part of the overlong tutorial you can choose to skip.
The game's introduction was a double-edged sword, equal parts delightful and frustrating. The sequence with the magical tree and the gang's teleportation to Natura was fully scored and 2D animated, which was wonderful and charming. Your arrival in Natura drags in a way that other Story of Seasons tutorials don't; and unfortunately, it's a product of the crossover. Usually you're free to roam around your farm and town, simultaneously checking the layout and learning what the game's new world has to offer.
But in order to place each of Noby's friends in their respective shops, the game holds your hand through your tour of Natura's business district. It's not you and your friends have had a dialogue with every shop owner covering both what they do and whether or not they have job openings that you can wield any more control than running a few feet. This also has the unfortunate side effect of skewing your perception of the town's layout... meaning that once you've done the tutorial, you'll have to run yourself around yet again to see where things actually are in relation to each other. Considering how little the Doraemon elements figure into the overall gameplay, it's a somewhat irritating way to start.
That aside, the game still has charm, and that charm is its primary saving grace. Doraemon fans looking for content will appreciate the opening scenes and animation, but that's about it. Gamers who want something innovative along the lines of Stardew Valley may enjoy the integration of Doraemon's gadgets into the mix, but won't find much else. But if you're just here for more Story of Seasons, if it's been a while since you've lived that digital farming life and you want a return to form, Doraemon: Story of Seasons will be there for you.
If nothing else, the presence of Doraemon: Story of Seasons is a promise of good things to come. A new game from the franchise is in the works, for one thing. For another, this is the first-ever Doraemon game to be localized for English-language sale, which could mean more content to come.
Doraemon: Story of Seasons is now available for Steam and the Nintendo Switch!
